Genuinely awful movies
« on: October 10, 2013, 11:02:10 AM »
Not movies that are "so bad they're good" or low budget films that have some camp value, but movies that are just incredibly bad, to the point their very existence offends you.

I'll start with a few:

- Crazy, Stupid, Love - the scene where Gosling and Stone spend an extended amount of time giggling on a bed and talking about Gosling's money is one of the most insincere and highly nauseating representations of humanity ever
- Star Wars Episodes II-III - while The Phantom Menace is boring, the acting is better, the story is passable, and the film doesn't in any way ruin the original trilogy. II and III on the other hand fail on almost every level
- 2012 - has any other movie of this magnitude been made so irrelevant so fast?

I wouldn't put CSL or SWII and SWIII in the "awful" category. You may not like them, you may even regard them as bad movies, but I wouldn't say they are genuinely awful.

The only movie that came to mind for me is The Happening. Easily the worst movie I ever paid money to see.

Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. I didn't mind 2012 that much, but my morbid nature for enjoying disaster films probably lends to that.  However I do remember being forced to go see Inventing The Abbots with my friend and his girlfriend and her friends.  Horrible movie.  I forget what was even going on, but I do remember Jennifer Connelly's tit making an appearance.  One would think that would make the movie worth it, but didn't.  You can see her goodies in other movies...Mulholland Falls comes to mind.

I'm all for films that are so bad they're funny or so over the top they're entertaining and I loved Independence Day & The Day After Tomorrow was pretty good...

But 2012 doesn't even work on a stupid - so bad it's good level. It's just *so* stupid that it fails even as a dumb action film.

Some of the out-and-out worst movies i've ever seen are :

• Freddy Got Fingered. - Tom Green has never been funny and giving him his own film was a huge mistake. Just putrid.
• American Pie 3 : American Wedding - has absolutely NONE of the charisma of the first two. Every character is annoying. Terrible script. painfully bad jokes. Just dreadful on every level.

Underworld and sequels.

By the way, I love Star Wars III, cheesy stuff included.

Jacob's Ladder and The Fifth Element are the two biggest offenders that most readily come to mind.

Knowing was quite awful and not unintentionally funny at all.

I'm a big Fifth Element fan as well.

Just thought of one :

Son Of The Mask. :puke:

It has everything I hate about that type of movie.

•Really bright primary colours
•Fish Eye Lens Camerawork = ghastly
•Really frantic editing & non-sequiters in the script.
•Everyone completely over-acting.
•Extreme close ups and weird angles.

Really cheap straight to DVD movies always employ these devices. I have no idea why. Does it make them look Less Cheap ? :?

I saw New Moon with some friends back when it came out (we went so you could do that thing where you make fun of the movie you're watching).  We found out too late that that movie is squarely outside of "so bad it's good" territory and firmly within "so bad it's bad" territory.

SWIII is not bad at all, it's the best of the prequels and aside from Lucas' fail in dialogue writing and the shit acting by Christensen it is still fucking awesome.

I'm always one to acknowledge that tastes vary and people like what they like.  But I just don't see anything redeeming in that movie that could possibly cause someone to like it.  I guess the exception would be for those who saw it when they were very young and are kind of blinded by the nostalgia factor.  But, eh, whatever.

Actually, aside from Lucas' fail dialouge, the acting, the boring and predictable cinematography,  the poorly executed story, the plotholes, the poorly integrated special effects, the unjustifiable choice to include incredibly dark and mature content, and the fact the movie puts "bad" Star Wars over the edge of "good" Star Wars and makes the series as a whole more bad than good... there's nothing else really to judge the movie on!

The Grudge 3 was really bad. Possibly The Grudge 2 would also qualify for "genuinely awful".

I know many of you are fans of Red Letter Media's Mr. Plinkett reviews. If you are, or you just like really really bad movies, you should check out their show, Best of the Worst. It's incredible what people have created. These aren't your big budget movies, either.

I never saw the Matrix movies.  I sleep well at night.  I'm not a huge Star Wars fan. I think I saw a Star Trek movie or two when I was younger. They don't interest me.  I'd rather watch Die Hard in space and Freddy Got Fingered.

Not sure what the popular opinion on this movie is, but I thought Burn After Reading was the worst movie I'd ever seen. I've wasted many hours of my life watching movies, but those are the only hours I want back.

Nailed it.  Along with Jacob's Ladder, The Butterfly Effect was just genuinely weird.

Which one?  Lundgren, Jane, or Stevenson?

Only movie I ever walked out of a theatre before it was over was Best of the Best (sorry Big Hath).

Zardoz.  I know some people consider it to be 'so bad it's good', but for me, it's just bad.  In fact, it is easily the worst movie I've ever seen.

As for The Fifth Element, I do like that movie, but I would like it a hell of a lot more if Bruce Willis shot Chris Tucker in the face a few dozen times.
Sincerely,

I watched "Dude where's my car" a while ago in a hotel room. I can not fathom Ashton Kutcher's career survived that movie.

EDIT: King, you also watched Spiceworld?! I saw it in the theaters back in the day.
