Hello all! This seems to remain a somewhat popular thing among us football fans. So I figured I'd swing in and run it. When I have a bit more time, I'll compile the links to the previous years.
The rules are simple.
Choose one team who you think will win their Week 1 game.
If your team wins, you move on to the next Week. If your team loses, you're eliminated.
You must choose a different team each week. Once you choose a team, you may no longer use them for the rest of the Survivor.
Your team must win the game, ties are considered a loss.
You must submit your pick before the kickoff of the game that you're choosing. So the latest that you can pick is just before kickoff for the Monday Night game.
Here is the list of games for Week 1 Choose wisely.
Thursday Night Season Opening Game
Dallas Cowboys at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Sunday Early Games
Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans
Los Angeles Chargers at Washington Football Team
Seattle Seahawks at Indianapolis Colts
New York Jets at Carolina Panthers
Minnesota Vikings at Cincinnati Bengals
Arizona Cardinals at Tennessee Titans
San Francisco 49ers at Detroit Lions
Pittsburgh Steelers at Buffalo Bills
Philadelphia Eagles at Atlanta Falcons
Sunday Late Games
Cleveland Browns at Kansas City Chiefs
Green Bay Packers at New Orleans Saints (Game to be played in Jacksonville)
Denver Broncos at New York Giants
Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots
Sunday Night Football
Chicago Bears at Los Angeles Rams
Monday Night Football
Baltimore Ravens at Las Vegas Raiders
If there are any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Lol you're right. I had you and Bosk in the win column on my template, assuming a Ravens win. Moved him down after the game, forgot to move you down. Thanks for your honesty.

Was traveling, had to hurry to post my pick, and never got to say 'Thank you, DoC, for doing this again'.
Three years ago, me and Dr. DVDT went 13-14 weeks before he won. Two years ago, I made it to around Week 9 or 10. Last year, a first or second week bounce. It happens.
I put this link on the pick 'em thread, to show how out of the norm the results of Week 1 were:
https://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/id/32207816/las-vegas-raiders-upset-caps-record-week-nfl-underdogs
Sorry for those who chose the Ravens. This is going to be a long season for an injury depleted team.

Pick for Week 2: Green Bay

Yeah....I'm going with Tampa Bay. Cleveland and New England are tempting, but don't want to roll the dice.

After that egg laying by GB last week, if I were betting the spread, I would absolutely take the Lions and the points in this one.

Yeah, I'd pass on that game.

Fortunately, I don't have to deal with the point spread. As a former Michigander who suffered with them for decades, I'm going with the Lions legendary knack of clutching defeat from the jaws of victory. That, and having only won twice at Lambeau over the past three decades. Of course, using all of this logic, they'll probably screw me over yet again and win :D
-
I'm not touching tonight's game. The NFC East garbage bowl. :\

Ok, so that game turned out to be better than I could have imagined. I actually almost watched the whole thing. Very entertaining...for the NFC East anyway.

Browns for me.

I'll go with the Hawks at home. That 12th man is gonna be brutal.

I've heard there are a lot of tix available for the Hawks game on the secondary market, and the prices are falling.

I too will pick the Seahawks

Looks like the Titans/Seahawks game claimed two victims. We'll see if the Lions/Packers game claims another.

Fucking London games. I wake up and the damn thing is halfway through the third quarter. I guess the idea is to get it over with before the 10:00 games start (and, in this case, it was two east coast teams that almost no one cares about), but holy hell!

I don't mind picking a road team, but west coast teams historically don't do well on the east coast. Or maybe that's just an old wives' tale that isn't really true. Either way, the other games I was looking at didn't seem all that much better.
-
Sweating my pick AGAIN!
-
Fortunately, my concern about a west coast team on the road in the eastern time zone was quite unfounded.
-
I think generally, though, the idea is sound (https://www.sportsinsights.com/blog/is-there-still-a-disadvantage-for-nfl-west-coast-teams-traveling-east/). (Tangent: I hate sports stats that are inexorably tied to betting; I'm not interested in the ROI on these games, just whether there's an advantage).
-

(Tangent: I hate sports stats that are inexorably tied to betting; I'm not interested in the ROI on these games, just whether there's an advantage).
Yeah...all the gambling crap makes that hard to follow (what the heck is "units won," and what does "ROI" mean in this context? I don't know and don't care). So I did the research myself.
Here are the 2000-2020 road records of the Chargers, Raiders, 49ers, Seahawks (and, from 2016-20, the Rams) against teams in the eastern time zone:
Rams..............................11-5 (.688)
Seahawks........................34-30 (.531)
Chargers.........................30-40 (.429)
49ers..............................21-35 (.375)
Raiders...........................20-47 (.299)
TOTAL..........................116-157 (.425)
It is, I think, interesting to see that, over 21 seasons, the Chargers played 25% more road games against eastern time zone teams than the 49ers.
NOTE: I did not take into consideration games played in London.
I guess the moral of the story is that the Rams have been remarkably good in eastern time zone road games, and the Raiders have been consistently bad (only four times during the 21 seasons did the Raiders have a winning record in these games).
-
That's awesome research.
I'd be curious to see the numbers for West Coast teams playing at 10AM PST/1PM EST, as I think that's a whole different animal than playing in the late afternoon or on Prime time.
-

I suspect you're correct, but that was more than I had in me.

I suspect you're correct, but that was more than I had in me.
I on the other hand had it in me. I started from 2010, when the NFL switched the paired teams in each West division so east coast teams wouldnt be forced to make four west coast trips in one year (like what happened to the Jets and Patriots in 2008 when they played in San Diego, Oakland, San Francisco, and Seattle in the same season). I also started the Rams from 2017 when they moved back to LA. I included the London games since all of those games that feature a West team start at 10:00amPST/PDT. Here are the 10:00am standings.
1) Los Angeles Rams: 10-3 (.769)
2) Seattle Seahawks: 22-14 (.611)
3) Los Angeles Chargers: 18-19 (.487)
4) San Francisco 49ers: 20-23 (.465)
5) Las Vegas Raiders: 19-33 (.365)
-
So their winning percentages basically match what their overall percentages have been over that span?
Time of year and conditions play a factor as well. Now that LV and both LA teams are in a dome, put them in the Northeast when cold and wind are a factor (like the Chargers in Baltimore yesterday) and they'll wilt more than they have in the past.
-
That also explains why the Seahawks have such a good win percentage with a bigger sample size than the Rams. The Pacific Northwest gets chilly and rainy, so theyre used to some of the bad weather that we get out here in the east.
-
The final 5 all survive for the second straight week!

The Giants gave me a bit of a scare last night!
Gonna have to give serious thought to this week's pick.
-
Well I lasted longer than I thought I would. Knew I shouldn't have gone with the Bengals. Thanks for running this, it was fun.
-
That Bengals loss knocked out 3 of us! I had misgivings about that pick, but only for about a second. I mean, c'mon... who had the Jets winning that game?!
I am still doing well in the Pick 'em, another factor in me following the NFL. Without these two competitions my interest wanes about 25%.
Thinking about than Manning-Cast for MNF, I wonder if other sports will follow suit. Maybe a Barkley/Shaq NBA telecast?
-
My third time in four years as one of the two finalists. In '18, I fell short to Dr. DvDT in Week 13 or 14, to TAC in '19 in Week 10, and now this year. I won't mention getting bumped in Week 2 last year......
Anyhoo.....

Week 9: I should wait for a particular Sunday game, but I'll take the Colts

Well, that was stress free. Tuned in when it was 42-6.
We live to fight another day :tup

The funny thing is that, when I posted that I was picking the Colts, I avoided looking at whom you had picked. I kinda thought I was making a bit of an unusual pick. Then, after hitting the "post" button, I saw yours and was a tinge disappointed.
Oh well...think of it as a bye week.

Sundays games were brutal for survivor, and our two finalists avoided that by going with Indy last Thursday night.

The particular Sunday game I was going to wait for was the Cowboys over the Broncos, but didn't think Cooper Rush would do a late magic trick two weeks in a row. As is, Prescott and the rest laid an egg, and I was able to relax thanks to the Colts. Otherwise...... <phewwwww>.
I'm going to follow that format and get it over early with....

Week 10 - Ravens

Sundays games were brutal for survivor, and our two finalists avoided that by going with Indy last Thursday night.
Had I not gone with Indy, the other two games I was looking at were Raiders/Giants (would've lost) and Ravens/Vikings (would've won).
Looks like my worthy competitor made a pick, but I haven't seen it and won't look while I ponder what I'm going with this week.

Panthers
Browns

The Ravens fall to the Dolphins. Now we wait to see what the Cardinals do. Will we have a champion or no survivors?
-
Well, it truly hurts when it is YOUR team that knocks you out of these things. The Ravens looked worse than the 3-5 team they easily could have been coming into tonight's game. Six plays of 50+ yards given up in the last three games. 170 net yards offensively with seven minutes left. Ouch!
Should have picked the Steelers. ;)
Go, Panthers!!!
-
I turned the game on shortly before halftime (after the Kings game against Ottawa was done). What a stunning game!
So...this is immediately where my mind goes: what happens if I also lose? Are we declared co-champs, so do we call it a push and try again next week?
-
If you lose, you both will be Co-Champions that survived 9 weeks.
If you win, you'll be the sole Champion that survived 10 weeks.
-
In that case, I hope the Cards don't make me regret not picking the Bucs or Bills, although I suppose I could still change my pick, but I'm not gonna. The Bills are a bigger favorite, but they (and the Bucs) are on the road.
-
'We are the co-champions, my friend
And we won't keep fighting after Week Ten
Oh, we are the co-champions
We are the co-champions
No need for week eleven
'cause we are the co-champions......"
LATE EDIT: well, pg, two of your three possible picks lost. My alternate pick would have been the Steelers. It would have been even more irritating to me, having suffered with the Lions for numerous decades before moving to Maryland, and have them ruin their 'perfect' season by knocking me out with a frickin' tie :D
-
DragonAttack & pg1067 are this year's Co-Champions! Congratulations. Thanks to all who played this season.

Doesn't have quite the same ring, eh? :lol
LATE EDIT: well, pg, two of your three possible picks lost.
Yeah...I had the Chargers game on in the background while doing things, but I never saw a score update until the pregame show for the 5:00 game. I forgot one of the basic principles of this: when in doubt, pick the team that's playing the Jets!
Oh well...congrats, Dragon!
And thanks to DOC for organizing this!

That didn't work out so well for a couple of us.

No kidding! That Bangals game killed 3 of us.
