Rudess's Dream Theater "covers"
« on: January 12, 2011, 01:52:20 AM »
Ok... So why is it that when JR plays a DT song solo, it's labeled as a cover? I was browsing JR on setlist.fm... and during the Explorations show, 6doit is labeled as a cover... He help write it, so why does it have to be called a "cover"? Or if Petrucci were to play part of, lets say... Erotomania... Or even The Silent Man or Wither... Would those have to be labeled as covers as well?

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

(a)  Dream Theater isn't playing the song.  Jordan Rudess is doing it on his own.

(b)  It's not like JR is just playing the song straight up.  He's rearranging it and retooling it to match his own personal style.

A cover is basically defined as a band or artist playing a song written by a different band or artist. JR is not DT, therefore it's a cover.

What if when Paul McCartney is performing songs like Yesterday, Got To Get You Into My Life, and All My Loving - he is actually playing Beatles covers? He wrote them, so it can't count?

JR didn't write any one DT song by himself that I can recall. I believe he wrote Overture in SDOIT, but it's part of an epic.

This.  Plus, on Notes on a Dream he was covering lots of DT from before he joined the band.

Well, according to the interviews, Finally Free was very much Jordan's composition. AFAIK he even wrote the vocal melodies, even though MP wrote the lyrics. Making of SFAM album BTW has JR's first sequencer demo of the song. It sounded very good even then!

Here's something to throw at you guys.

Take whatever "Guns N' Roses" are right now.

When Axl Rose does "Sweet Child of Mine," is it a cover or not?

Now when Slash on his solo tour does "Sweet Child of Mine," is it a cover or not?

Now stop there, and re-read Mike Portnoy's Twitter post on January 4th:

"Mike Portnoy
Today is 2 years since I lost my father, idol & best friend...RIP Popz...give a listen to "The Best Of Times" (MP version) in his honor.."
He's referring to this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YS2trjjFZ_U

Now let me ask you, what is a cover?

I felt like that post I just made was an Old Spice Commercial.

Stop. Listen to this cover. Stop. Now listen to this cover. Stop again. What is a cover?
