Title: Top 3 (or 5) songs you would like to see on the next tour?
Post by: bosk1 on September 25, 2018, 11:05:01 AM
Please list and rank the top 3 songs you would like to see played next tour if it were totally up to you to come up with a set list.  You may also list two "honorable mentions" that don't make your top 3.  Feel free to explain why you chose those particular songs.  I would prefer people to be somewhat realistic, but that isn't strictly necessary.  Go.

1. Blind Faith
2. The Glass Prison
3. Octavarium

These are essentially my most favorite DT songs that I have yet to see live

Honorable Mentions:

4. Anna Lee
5. Status Seeker

I chose those two as honorable mentions because I feel like those are two songs I really like that I feel I am extremely unlikely to ever see live

...and thank you in advance for letting the guys in the band know of our choices.  ;)

My choices:
1. Octavarium
2. Stream of consciousness
3. The Ministry of lost souls

I find it odd that this is the era I ended up picking songs from, but most of the 90s classics and the newer stuff have been played quite a bit over the last eight years. They also managed to play so many songs we all love during the time.

Assuming they can work up vocal melody alterations that work:

1. The Killing Hand -- Saw it the first two times I saw DT in '92 and was unfamiliar with the song.  Haven't seen it since.

2. Scarred -- Not exactly a rarity, but it's my favorite pre-SFAM song not on I&W (and maybe even if I&W is included).  Octavarium because I haven't seen it since 2005!

3. 6DOIT -- I'd love to see the whole thing, but that isn't realistic, so as much of it as possible (with Goodnight Kiss being the lowest priority).  They did SS, AtCR and LT/GF when I saw them open for Yes in 2004, but I haven't otherwise seen any of it.

Honorable mention:  Octavarium (without the extended intro) Scarred and Anna Lee

**Edited to include numerical rankings**

Basing this on songs I haven't seen (I've only seen The Astonishing tour (without the encores) and the IW&B tour) and want...

1. Space-Dye Vest - because it's a brilliant piece of music and deserves more plays
2. Beneath the Surface - my favorite DT ballad next to Space-Dye Vest
3. Far From Heaven - a beautiful ballad, if not Space-Dye Vest, then this, because it's a great Jordan-James duet, beautiful song
4. Disappear - I am going ballad heavy on purpose, because I LOVE these songs, they make me cry
5. The Count of Tuscany - if you're gonna play an epic, play a relatively newer one, bring this sucker back, it's incredible

Honorable mention: The Ministry of Lost Souls, because I adore that track and it's an under-appreciated one that deserves to be played again, it's been long enough

By the way, at the other end of the spectrum, the following are my "bathroom break" songs:

Innocence Faded/Lie/The Mirror
New Millennium
The Great Debate
I Walk Beside You
Repentance/The Ministry of Lost Souls

1. The Glass Prison. About time to bring this monster of adrenaline back.
2. The Count of Tuscany. Never saw it live and as someone mentioned above, it's time to pay homage to a more recent classic.
3. Forsaken. Never saw it live, and you need some shorter, catchier tune in the set.

Honorable mentions:
4. You Not Me. I shit you not, I have been lucky enough to see Dream Theater many times in the last 20 years (I'm 14 months away from the 20th anniversary of my first DT show), so I really have seen everything I really wanted to see. It's time to break the stigma about this song which flies by in 5 minutes anyway.
5. These Walls. As with Forsaken, there has to be some easier and shorter songs too.

...and thank you in advance for letting the guys in the band know of our choices.  ;)

I've come to realize that whenever Bosk asks questions related to the band on this forum, rarely it's just a random question without any further motive.

I'm going to keep it kinda realistic.

1. Octavarium - one of my favourite DT songs nowadays and I was too young to see the 8VM tour and they didn't come here anyway. :) Regardless of the setlist, if this song is there, I'm in and probably going for the first row again.

2. Beneath the Surface - I love ADTOE and this is one of my favourite songs from it. I think it's time to stop playing BAI and OTBOA (only witnessed BAI live once, but saw the latest setlist; OTBOA I saw twice), and maybe play some other beautiful songs from that album. Not really interested in seeing Bridges in the Sky again (they played it on European festival 2015 tours) too.

3. The Ministry of Lost Souls - I love this one. They already played The Count of Tuscany again outside of BC&SL tour, maybe this song can make its glorious return?

Honourable mentions are:

4. This Is the Life - well, basically same as #2, I'd love to see this one live.

5. Stream of Consciousness - a well-deserved rest for James in the setlist and also a kickass instrumental I wouldn't mind seeing again with Mangini behind the drums.

I hope they don't go with The Glass Prison though, I could totally do without this song.

1. War Inside My Head/The Test That Stumped Them All - Such great concert tracks, I would like to see how Mangini would interpret these songs. (They are usually played together, that's why I put them like this.)

2. These Walls - I love the drum work on this song, such a pleasure to listen to. Also, I think it's one of the most instrumentally reserved and cohesive Dream Theater songs.

3. Outcry - I don't think the mix did this song justice, the complex middle section is a joy to listen to.

---

Honorable Mentions:

4. Repentance - JP solo, enough said.

5. Speak to Me - Such a beautiful outtake, I think it'd be a nice setlist break.

1) In the Presence of Enemies: Hasn't been played much (if at all?) since SC came out. Seems generally popular here, despite some noodling toward the end. Will give James a chance to shine without attempting any of those early 90s vocal lines.

2) Disappear: One of my favorites and rarely played tracks, a nice change of place and one of their best ballads. Definitely my favorite.

3) Ministry of Lost Souls: Great song, very workable for James, some cool instrumentation parts in the middle.

HM:
Selfishly I would like to see Caught in a Web or Innocence Faded, but I'd prefer to choose songs that will minimize the strain on James.
Raw Dog. Just kidding.

1. Stream of Consciousness - One of their best instrumentals and a really great song.  A "favorite" for me.

2. The Ministry of Lost Souls - I think this is an under rated song and the solo section in the middle is just awesome.

3. Forsaken - Another under rated song but is really great all the way through

Honorable mentions:

4. A Nightmare to Remember - Seems like most of the BC&SL songs were lost in the shuffle with MP leaving.  This one would be really great live

5. Another Won - Probably not gonna happen but it's one of their earliest songs and an absolute clasic.  No mistake that it's my username.

I love that we get an opportunity to provide input to the band on this, quite the privlige.  Thanks very much, Bosk for doing this! :tup

1. The Killing Hand-way overdue
2. Octavarium
3. This Dying Soul

There's a big cry for The Glass Prison, which to me had not aged very well, but if they do a Glass Prison/This Dying Soul 1-2 punch, I'd be fine with that. Would make a great encore if you ask me.

Honorable mentions:
4. Surrender To Reason
5. The Path That Divides/The Walking Shadow/My Last Farewell-Doubtful that they'll do an Astonishing suite, but missing the tour, this is my favorite part.

Mine:

1.  The Glass Prison:  Has not been done in awhile.  The one show I was at when it was played, I did not get to really enjoy it (the same can be said of two other of my top 10 DT songs, which were also played near the beginning of the set).  It ranks high on most people's lists, and I would think would go over well at any show.

2.  Take Away My Pain:  The rare ballad I would VERY much like to see.  A reappearance is long overdue.

3.  In the Name of God:  Same reasoning.  It is a great song that has not been played much in a LONG time (I don't believe it has been back since the TOT tour).  I think it would likely get a HUGE fan reaction.

Honorable mentions:

4.  A Nightmare To Remember:  I love this song, despite it slightly overstaying its welcome toward the end, and I bet it slays live.

5.  Misunderstood:  A nice "consolation prize" from Six Degrees of TGP were not played.

It was played during the Progressive Nation 2009 tour.  This was one of the setlists I saw for that and it's funny how it has a few really popular songs from this thread on it such as ITNOT, TCOT, BTL, ANTR and that Solitary Shell extended instrumental was sick!  https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/dream-theater/2009/convention-hall-asbury-park-nj-13d7b5dd.html (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/dream-theater/2009/convention-hall-asbury-park-nj-13d7b5dd.html)

1. The Killing Hand-way overdue

Great call.  That almost made my list.  My only slight misgiving is that when it has been played, James has not been able to hit the big climax "I am the killing HAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNND!" since the early days.  I wouldn't mind if he came up with an alternate harmony, as long as it had power.  But it has always seemed like he was going for the big note and just missed it and went off key.  Since it is the climax of the song, that can take away from the overall impact of the song to me.

3.  In the Name of God:  Same reasoning.  It is a great song that has not been played much in a LONG time (I don't believe it has been back since the TOT tour).  I think it would likely get a HUGE fan reaction.\

Oh, I didn't realize that.  I didn't see them on that tour and had forgotten they played it.  Still, for how liked the song seems to be, it is still pretty underrepresented through the years.  AND it will be a decade since then by the time they tour, so that is plenty of a gap to bring it back, IMO.

Fair; I for some reason misremembered the OP as "3-5" for whatever reason. Here's what I got.

1. Space-Dye Vest
2. Beneath the Surface
3. Far From Heaven

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Ministry of Lost Souls, Enigma Machine

This is true enough.  It's an awesome song and one I was really looking forward to catching one day and I got lucky I saw two shows that two (they didn't cross over any songs besides the BCSL ones).  I'd have put it on my list if I didn't catch it before.

I was actually thinking about how cool it is that DT have so many awesome songs and I had to think pretty hard about which songs I really love that I haven't had a chance to see and it's a pretty small list actually.

1. Blind Faith - Amazing song, long time no see! Would love to see MM's interpretation on this one. And as it's a James' composition, he could feel more confortable to adapt possible struggling bits in his lines.

2. Surrender to Reason - Would love to se it live for the first time.

3. The Killing Hand - Almost the same reason as Blind Faith. And would absolutely love if they create a new intro as they did for every other time they played it live, like Another Hand, perhaps in the vein of Trial of Tears '14 - of course that's up to the band :lol

Honorable Mentos:

4. Ytsejam - Hasn't been played since what? 2011 pre-ADToE european leg? And would spare James for some time.
5. This Is The Life or Lost Not Forgotten, they're in the same tier, would be very happy to see any of these ones getting some attention.

4.  A Nightmare To Remember:  I love this song, despite it slightly overstaying its welcome toward the end, and I bet it slays live.

Nice one. Would love to see MM slaying properly those blast beats at the end.  :metal

I've only seen DT 4 times so there are a lot of songs I've haven't seen live. I haven't seen many of the classics yet: Metropolis, PMU, TTT, among others. But I will restrict to songs they haven't played in a while:

Stream of consciousness
Only a matter of time
Octavarium

HM: Disappear, In the presence of enemies.

1. Only a Matter of Time
2. The Killing Hand
3. Far From Heaven

HM: Disappear, New Millennium

Reasons:
1. Never seen any of them live (except NM in 1998 when I was 14... and I don't remember that)
2. When Dream and Day Unite has been very under-utilized since 2006. Nothing from the album the last 4 years MP was with them... and only Afterlife has been pulled out in the last 6 years (since Fortune and Ytsejam were played on MM's first tour) - and I didn't get to see a show that summer since I don't live in Europe. The two I've chosen haven't been played since 2004. It is time. And there's no rule saying you can't play two from your first album in one show!
3. Far From Heaven, great song and the only one I haven't heard from that album. I doubt they'll ever play it again, but if I can give them a nudge....
4. Disappear is amazing. It deserves to be played more than twice. Must be mentioned.
5. I've always liked New Millennium. I found it funny that JLB said he wasn't a big fan of this song, because it's actually the rhythm of the vocals that I really like. I'd like to see it again, finally.

1. Octavarium - My #3 DT song, I haven't seen it live, it's a big fan favourite and it hasn't been played in ages
2. In the Name of God - Similar to the above, except its my #4 DT song. Probably not as big a favourite as 8VM, but I'm sure it would slay live and get great reactions
3. Endless Sacrifice - Another one of my favourites (just outside my top 10)that I've not seen live. I think it would work well live, with the trading solos and Train of Thought has been a little under-represented recently I think. However, this one has been played a lot more recently than the first 2.

Honourable mentions:
4. The Glass Prison - same sorts of reasons as the above - time it made a comeback!
5. Sacrificed Sons - I've always loved this song, especially the ending and I find it a bit underrated, I'd love to see it live. I also think this is probably a fairly comfortable song for James to sing night after night.

Just for fun, I'll add a few more I'd love to see: In the Presence of Enemies, The Ministry of Lost Souls, Lines in the Sand, Surrender to Reason.

The only problem is, my choices range from long to very long. If they happen to have an epic ~20 minute track on the new album, it's almost a certainty that they'd play it, meaning another epic (eg. 8VM) would be unlikely. That's why I relegated ITPOE down to honourable mentions.

1. Disappear
2. The Killing Hand
3. Take Away My Pain

Honorable Mention:
Repentance
Anna Lee

The reasons - I've never seen any of these live.  I also haven't seen Behind the Veil or Surrender to Reason, and would love to, but I feel like there's more of an opportunity for them to bring those out without me having to vote for them. :)

Here it goes:

The Glass Prison
The Great Debate
Octavarium

I know TGD has already been played live, but I think it's one of the best DT songs ever and MM played it beautifully well, can't get tired of watching them playing it on YouTube at some festival in 2011.

Honorable Mentions:

In the Presence of Enemies
Stream of Consciousness

About ItPoE, if they don't play it as a whole song, I'd be pleased with Part 1 only, I think it would be a great show/set opener.

1) Light Fuse And Get

I think this is very unlikely as the band barely played it after the "tour" for WDADU.

2) Speak To Me

I think this one is actually likely to appear again. The band definitely seems to like the FII album more than fans seems to think as it does get represented pretty often. I think they might lay off the big songs as they did Trial of Tears on DT12 and Sons of Apollo is playing Lines In The Sand, so I think the bsides are a place they might look. I'd honestly be cool with any rarer FII songs (You Not Me, Take Away My Pain, Anna Lee, The Way It Used To Be, etc)

3) Disappear

A great rarity, and could be a good representative of the 6 Degrees album since the other songs are long as shit and the title track songs have been played pretty often in the past.

I have that on the Fan Club CD. To me, instead of Akerfeldt singing a verse, I thought it would've been a lot cooler if he read the spoken word stuff while the band played.

1. Octavarium: Saw it live only once, the only DT show I could drag my father to.
2. In the Name of God: The only time I saw it live, Jordan's keyboards fried. I'm not joking.
3. Misunderstood: great number in itself, plus I'm interested in Jordan's possible new tech tricks in the outro

4. You Not Me. I shit you not, I have been lucky enough to see Dream Theater many times in the last 20 years (I'm 14 months away from the 20th anniversary of my first DT show), so I really have seen everything I really wanted to see. Funny coincidence. If I'm assuming right, I missed that very show breaking my car on my road to the venue. The only DT tour I've missed in my life.

Reading some of the other responses, I didn't realize that Octavarium hasn't been played since the RCMH show.  I think I'll swap it for Scarred on my list since I've seen that more recently.

2 - Beyond This Life - One of my favorite DT songs and I've never seen it live either.
3 - The Glass Prison - 6DOIT is my favorite album, so this fits well.

Blind Faith.
Raise the Knife - Unlikely, but I love it.

^^ There's a 'technically' for Repentance since you did see that one, just with a cover band :lol

Not for me, I got to see Mikael Åkerfeldt sing it with the mic off  and also got to see MP's TSF do it too

I have that on the Fan Club CD. To me, instead of Akerfeldt singing a verse, I thought it would've been a lot cooler if he read the spoken word stuff while the band played.

There's an audio recording of the full song?  I knew there was the clip in the CHaos in Motion DVD that showed it like it went on as expected (since they did the verse again with the MIC working).

Top 5 so far (using my own points system and disregarding posts for people who merely listed and did not rank):
1.  Octavarium
2.  The Killing Hand
3.  The Glass Prison
4.  Disappear
5.  In the Name of God

#4 is surprising.

Edited my original post to add the #s

2. The glass prison (this recalls to the 'Mangini era, heavy' tour setlist thread)
3. The best of times (i know.. i know.. but if I could hear only JP's final solo live It would make my day)

Why did you find it surprising? It is a great song.

Oh, I know it's a great song.  I love it.  But that does not mean that it is a fan favorite for appearing in a live set.  I would not expect it to be in high demand, despite being well-liked.

1. "Surrender to reason"
2. "Blind faith" (I had the pleasure of hearing it at my first show ten years ago, and would love to have another chance.)
3. "Take away my pain" (I agree with you, bosk. It's so beautiful.)

There's an audio recording of the full song?  I knew there was the clip in the CHaos in Motion DVD that showed it like it went on as expected (since they did the verse again with the MIC working).
Yes. It was released on the final fan-club CD in 2008. You can read about it here:

(By the way, that CD also included this masterpiece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfkU8qCN7j4)

1. Sacrificed Sons. IMO, Labrie's best lyrics and a top tier DT song.
2. Stream of Consciousness. Amazing instrumental.
3. Lie. A great song and a good way to acknowledge Awake's 25th anniversary.

Honorable mentions
1. Beneath The Surface. DT's best ballad to date.
2. A Change of Seasons. My 2nd favorite DT song. The only reason it's in honorable mentions is due to length.

1.  The Razor's Edge.
I don't need all of 8vm.  Alternate this as the closer for the concert proper and the encore.  Has the emotional IT needed at the end of a show.

2.  Misunderstood.  Saw this in DC back in '08.  Memories of....the light blue lighting during the second set of verses creating a wonderful vibe, before being blasted away by the  flood of lights at the start of the second chorus.  Still gives me chills.  It went from being somewhat of a 'filler' track (due to the excellence of Disc2) to being one of my favorites after that night.
(There's also nothing wrong with cutting out a minute or so of the ending.)

3.  Here's something totally different......the intro for 'Saviour in the Square' followed by 'Our New World'.  Someone put these two pieces together on youtube when TA first came out, and I've put these two pieces together ever since.

Optional:  In The Name of God, This Is The Life

1. Stream of Consciousness - My favorite instrumental of theirs. Would love to see how Manginis drums will be in the song. Plus that awesome ending unison.

2. Blind Faith - The intro, the vocals, and the overall instrumental I feel should be played live again.

3. The Ministry of Lost Souls - Now this would be nice to bring out this time. JLB could knock it out of the park live now. Plus the amazing instrumental section.

HM:
1. Saviour In The Square/When Your Time Has Come - these two would be nice as well, if they don't do the Goodnight Kiss/Solitary Shell combo.

2. Chosen - This really needs to played again. It was amazing on The Astonishing tour. I could see this as an encore song.

Also, this depends on how DT14 sounds, and the length of those tracks. Either way though, I'd be happy with any song other than Pull Me Under and As I Am.

edit: I decided that Blind Faith would be a better choice.

1. Surrender to Reason - because it's a beautiful song that fits JLB's comfort zone the past tours, just like BAI. And I would love to see how they do the wicked instrumental.

2. In The Presence of Enemies Pt. 2 - I am surprised by how this song grew on me the past year to the point that I hear some "Astonishing" vibe in a lot of parts. I think Mangini would sound great in this song, judging by how he did TDEN. If JLB nails the high "Angels fall...," I would clap really hard. LOL

3. Chosen - This should alternate with TSCO every other tour as THE ballad of the night.

2. Surrender To Reason

2. Lifting Shadows off a Dream: This song is top 10 for me, I don't think I've seen it live and I think it would make for a great ballad break.

3. The Path that Divides/The Walking Shadow/My Last Farewell (Quintessential heavy proggy DT buried in the middle of a concept album!)

4. Bridges in the Sky (Great song live! Even if it was played in 2015.)

These aren’t necessarily my favourite songs as most of them were played on the last 3 tours with big chunks of Awake, Scenes and I&W plus most of the post Portnoy stuff. I’m going for 2 fan faves that haven’t been heard in a long time:

1) The Glass Prison
2) The Killing Hand

I’m also going to go selfishly for a song that I’ve never heard live as I missed the tour for that album for some reason that I can’t remember:

3) Octavarium

Honourable mentions:

The Count Of Tuscany
The Ministry Of Lost Souls

No shit. Whatever the setlist for the next tour will be, if there's 8VM in there, I'm definitely buying the tickets.

Although who am I kidding, I'm buying the tickets anyway, it's been three years since I've last seen DT. :lol

Here's my list:

1. Surrender to Reason - My 2nd favorite song on DT12 after IT and it hasn't been played at all. The whole song has an amazing vibe and there's THAT JP solo section with the most amazing drums and bass rhythms underneath, courtesy of Myung and Mangini :metal

2. Stream of Consciousness - One of their best instrumentals and they haven't played it since the TOT tour. It would also help James rest his voice during the show.

3. The Killing Hand - My favorite song on WDADU. Hasn't been played in a looooooooooooong time and it would be the perfect song to celebrate WDADU's 30 years in 2019. No need to play the whole album or anything, just include TKH.

Honorable mentions:

4. Beyond This Life - Also one of my favorites. If they're going to include anything from SFAM, it should be this song. It's perfect from start to finish. Also, 2019 = 20 years of SFAM.

5. Blind Faith - Not a short song, but not too long either. Would love to see this lineup play it. The instrumental section is SICK.

1. Solitary Shell - I am shocked that no one mentioned this one, I thought it was a fan favorite and hasn't been played for ages! It is short, catchy and THAT Bridge. Also Double Neck Guitar.

2. The Glass Prison - Everything has been said about it, just for getting counted another time.

3. Octavarium - As the new epic closer for the encore. Hasn't been played since the corresponding tour. It would be interesting to see what Mike adds to it and if Jordan touches the intro.

4. The Enemy Inside. Killer Song, that works great live.

5. Home - Maybe with a jam in the middle?

If they play Surrender to Reason and/or Octavarium, they're going to need a 12 string guitar anyway, so just play Solitary Shell too!

Well, since I am new and only saw TA, (shows with and without changed set). I will be happy to any of it. But, if I could choose:

1. Octavarium - the most original and cool rock song ever.    :metal

2. (now it's a bit harder to choose). BAI, - I understand it's been played a lot, but I love it and haven't seen it.

3. In the Name of God or In the Presence of Enemies - 1 & 2 - please forgive me for the little rule bend here.  Too Hard To Decide.

Honorable

4.  Far From Heaven

5. Just Let Me Breathe

1. Octavarium (in its entirety - someone above suggested they should play it without the intro, and that would really take away from the song's greatness to me). Over the last few years it's become my favourite DT song.

2. In The Presence of Enemies. Another favourite of mine, not sure if it's been played since the Systematic Chaos tour. In any case I've never seen it but would love to.

3. Misunderstood. Just a very cool song and quite unique in their catalogue.

Honourable mentions:

4. Illumination Theory. Love this piece and would like for it to become a staple, unlikely as that probably is due to its length.

5. Eve. Just a beautiful song.

2. Blind Faith: This is the song from SDOIT Disc One that I haven't seen live yet that I'd really love to see.
3. Outcry: Love the middle section.

Honorable Mentions:
4. Panic Attack: I would love to see Mangini tackle this one.
5. In the Presence of Enemies: My favorite of their latter day epics.

I was just thinking about doing a poll about this, but with songs that they haven't played with MM yet... This is a good idea too.. I could anyways do the poll a few weeks from now with the songs orderly according to these results so is easier to find the songs for most (I was thinking of giving 5 options)..

Ok, so I'll make two lists, in order to answer both questions..

Songs I like to see/listen next time I see them:

1) *any song from Train of Thought*: favorite album and out of the approximately 75 songs I've already seen live none of them was off this album.. I could've easily full the three spots with songs from this album, but feels like cheating and/or pointless..

2) Octavarium: well, talking about cheating, if someone is asking me what one extra song I'd include in a given setlist if I have that power, I'd surely use my gift to choose between the epics, and while this isn't my fav epic (TCoT is) I haven't see it live, as many other ppl..

3) The Ministry of Lost Souls: yeah, I've heard here and there that this song live might loose some of its strength, but I'm willing to live, die and kill to verify it.. I just love the song, and even when is a very unlikely option because is not a fan favorite and also takes a lot of time to the setlist, I'll continue to pray for seeing it at least once..

Ok, and now songs they haven't played with Mangini yet that I like to see... someday soon:

-Erotomania: sick instrumental (also, it's not in any dvd)..
-Voices: because you cannot play the previous without playing this one.. Not a big fan of it, but only the beginning and the "thought disorder-dream control" section make already the song very worth to see it live (also, it's not in any dvd)..
-Surrender to Reason: killer song, and one that will definitely see the light in one of the next two or three tours for sure (also, it's not in any dvd)..

tl/dr: you just missed lots of DT lyric references..

Considering its popularity and the fact that it hasn't been played since 2006, it does feel like it is time to bring back the song Octavarium.  I have to think that a lot of "on the fence about going" fans would go just to see that.

Agreed. I'm actually surprised to see it in so many people's lists here, even though it's arguably my favorite DT song ever. If they were to play that, that is an insta-buy for me, no question, I would be going for that song alone.

It's not a certainty but they always said that they would play in future tours the missing DT12 songs (missing from the Along for the Ride tour I mean).

They've played Behind the Veil in the anniversary tour, they played The Bigger Picture in the I&WAB tour, I think it's quite safe to assume, although the certainty will only be there once the tour starts, that we'll get Surrender to Reason next time.

2. Stream of Counciousness - now, just to make more votes, this song deserves it!
3. Surrender to Reason

Damn.  That was tasty.  :metal

Just my opinion, but I think he plays it better than Portnoy

1) Surrender to Reason (if it fits the style of the new album)
2) Surrender to Reason (if JP wants to break out the 12-string and stand again)
3) Surrender to Reason (I'd like to hear it I guess)

Probably couldn't be more clear than that!

By the looks of it, they might play Octavarium again next year, so if they're using the 12 string for that song, why not STR too?

So, I was just reading the thread and notice my post might've been not written well for the purpose of the survey, so I'll summarize it and correct it here:

1) In the Name of God: because is the one with more votes from ToT as of yet (although SoC is not that far), and I think it'll remain that way..
2) Octavarium
3) The Ministry of Lost Souls

HM
4) Erotomania
5) Surrender to Reason (because, even when after Erotomania it would feel odd if they don't follow it with Voices, I'd spare that little oddity (?) if they play STR instead... and actually lots of other songs as well.. I'm not much into Voices as a whole anyways....

Both appear on the Metropolis 2000 DVD (Live Scenes From New York)

But is not a DVD... is a VHS..

Kind of surprised by the love for Ministry of Lost Souls.  I always thought the song was fine, and I enjoyed it live, but thought a lot of fans really didn't like it.

Yeah I've always thought that was a sleeper song. I remember not many people were keen on it when SC first came out, including myself, but over the years it's really grown on me. I think it's the one from SC that has aged most gracefully, even that instrumental section in the middle. I love that it takes its sweet time and tells a story with such a beautiful melody in the verses, and the guitars are lovely as well. Great hook, I'd love for them to bring it back for a tour if they're willing to make 15 minutes of room for it.

I have always thought that *Metropolis 2000: Scenes from New York was realeased as VHS, like 5 Years in a Livetime and Images and Words: Live in Tokyo, and only afterwards released as DVD (like you can nowadays release a given DVD in Blu-ray)..

Ok, never mind.. I always count from Budokan onwards, about this kind of things..

It was released as both VHS and DVD, I have them both!  The VHS did not have any bonus tracks on though from memory.

With regards to Ministry Of Lost Souls, it's the opposite of what was said above for me.  It was an instant favourite on SC for me and my love for it has waned a little over time but I still included it on my list.  I don't recall seeing it live although I did see the SC tour so would be interested to see how it works, some gorgeous epic guitar playing from JP on this one that I'd love to see live.

There was a problem with the original run of European PAL DVDs, which ended up being recalled and destroyed by Warner before release date. The VHSs (and I think some working copies of the DVD) were released in April 2001, but the remastered/corrected DVDs came out in November/December. Maybe that was the cause of confusion.

Hey all, had to make an account to post on this one. I've been popping in to check on new album updates (great job to all who have been compiling that info). Anyway... my picks would be:

1 Stream of Consciousness- I would love to see what Mangini would do with this one.
2 Solitary Shell- A great song to change the vibe (also just a great song)
3  :hefdaddy Octavarium- Seems like everyone else wants to hear it too, and rightfully so.

4- Fatal Tragedy
5- In the Name of God

But yeah, there's this too.. If AMBI is there, is only as a bonus track.. And even if it were there as official track, is time to bring these (or at least just Erotomania) to a fresh release... not to mention with a newer drummer..

I didn't know it had been released on VHS, but I guess it was.  I bought it on DVD as soon as I knew about it, which was before 6DOIT.  If you only have the VHS, I STRONGLY recommend getting the DVD because the band commentary track alone is worth the price of admission.

3.      Surrender To Reason / Blind Faith (tie)
4.      In the Name of God
5.      The Killing Hand

I also made a shameless plug for Take Away My Pain because I have been really wanting to hear it for years.

Wow I would die if these 5 songs was on the setlist. StR is not my favorite but BF would be so cool even though I know James would have hard time with the chorus. They could do some fixing/rearragement for TKH, that will work well in a live setup. Interesting to hear what they are planning!

1. Octavarium: seriously, if they play this one, I will definitely get tickets. Would love to see it live

2. Innocence Faded: a top 10 DT song for me, that I would love to see performed live, even though it might not be realistic.

3. Blind Faith: I bet this would be amazing.

4. You Not Me: I'm completely serious. It would be hilarious to see them churn out this 'hit' and completely own it on stage, while casual fans start staring wondering what the hell is happening.

5. Home: I want to feel the 'womp womp', I've never seen this one live before.

Bosk's "given what they are planning" comment made me super hyped for this tour! What COULD they be planning?? I think it's possible that they play the whole new album. But it will be a single disc album, so around 60-70 mins, which would leave enough time to play loads of fan favs, including 8vm. So maybe it's something else.

just play the whole new album twice

I thought one thing they could be planning that would make Octavarium a far-fetched idea is that they move through their discography chronologically, playing one song from every album. Then again, they have done that same thing at least on two tours before, so I don't consider this to be a very likely option.

Casual fan: "What the hell is this mediocre, generic, dad-rock they are playing? Are they covering a SoA song?" (I actually liked YNM when FII came out, I thought it was one of the more enjoyable songs on the album. Though as I didn't find much enjoyable, that is not high praise.

On topic... that is a pretty good Top 5 despite 8VM being the only one I would personally clamor for. Though I generally think Majesty/WDaDU songs should be retired from live performances.

YNM live would be an incredible rarity. I think it was only played a couple times on the FII tour but is actually a great hard-rock song that I think would work really well live. I wish MP would've never commented on this song because now all the fans tend to dislike it too, probably just because of that.

Well...that's just not true.  A number of very vocal Portnoy sycophants don't like it, but I doubt their opinions are typical of "all the fans."

I just think its a DT song that is fairly different than what they are known for so it's bound to get some dislike

I feel this way about most of FII. The material isn’t bad, it just doesn’t sound much like DT.

And I think that amplifies it even more.  Like I Walk Besides You got some flak for being a more poppy non DT sounding song, but it doesn't get the hate YNM gets and it's probably because people generally enjoy 8VM moreso than FII.

I like YNM a LOT more than IWBY.  IWBY is down in the bottom 10 with "Innocence Faded."  All that isn't to say that I love YNM.  It's fine.  Not bad, but certainly below average (of course, "average" DT songs beat out everything on a lot of bands' "best of" albums).

I thought one thing they could be planning that would make Octavarium a far-fetched idea is that they move through their discography chronologically, playing one song from every album. Then again, they have done that same thing at least on two tours before, so I don't consider this to be a very likely option.

Let's hope not. That kind of set list can work once in a very great while, like for an anniversary show, but as a regular thing, it's a bad idea.

I already thought Octavarium was a longshot, given its length.  But given what they are planning, I think it is even more of a longshot now.  But:  (1) that's all I'll say on that; and (2) I could be wrong.

20+ min epic confirmed for the new album :tup
... and for the new tour, of course, right? :tup
I second that. Really it was the first thing that crossed my mind, because normally we get, at most, one big epic for every tour. So I'm betting this the reason behind Bosk's observation. Or maybe DT is planning to pick at least one song from each of the older albums, which will lead to choice shorter songs. Let's see.

I think picking at least one song from each album for the setlist is a great idea, like they did for the summer tour of 2011, before ADTOE was released. I like it when bands represent their whole catalog and not just a couple of fan favorite albums live.

It could also be some sort of "compensation" for the last two tours, where an entire album took away half the show, and another one literally made up the whole show.

That would make sense, but imagine the following: If DT14 were to be so good that there were all killers and no fillers, you'd want to hear the entire record, would you? On the other note, the prospect of having at least one long piece on it (or more) makes me excited

Wow, I never notice they did that!.. Maybe because the songs weren't in chronological order, but I did't pay attention to that detail.. But yeah, if they do something like that it'd be cool (and not again like Score or the 2015 tour -these two were fine, but it'd feel a bit predictable if they repeat that very setlist structure so soon-)... although I think they should skip the I&W songs again..

Also, even if the new album has an instrumental and they include it in the set, I hope they play another instrumental... 1) because that would give a hypothetical second and very needed respite to James' voice and 2) because the only options if we exclude the ones they've already played with MM, would be Stream and Erotomania, which I consider to be excellent DT tracks (not counting FAS either, given its nature)..

But I agree that any of the 6 songs of the final results would be great to see live.. Haven't seen any of them yet,... well, except TGP in the Shattered Fortress event, but not the same obviously..

Still, I'm puzzled by the "given what they are PLANNING" live. Was playing live Illumination Theory a "plan"? sure, you can say so, but the real planning for that tour was having the Awake and Scenes anniversary, playing Illumination Theory was not a "plan" anymore than playing Octvarium or In the Presence of Enemies was.

Having Bosk saying that they are PLANNING something makes me think it's something more than the standard "New songs including the big epic and some classics" tour.

During ADToE tour, they played the whole album, didn't they? The songs that were played by concert changed each night, but in the end, they played all the songs. I like this ideia, cause you have the chance to play every song from the new record and vary the setlist throughout the tour.

1- Disappear
2- Take Away My Pain
3- The Killing Hand

These are my must.

4- The Glass Prison
5- In The Presence Of Enemies (I and II)

And I don't care full Octavarium but I hope I'll hear at least "Razor's Edge" section again but I don't think DT tends to do medleys anymore after MP leaving.

Hmmm ...

1. The Glass Prison. The first DT song I saw live (my first concert was the SDOIT tour). Haven't seen it since.  :metal
2. About to Crash (reprise) + Losing Time (is this allowed? Please? Can't have one without the other! )
3. Learning to Live. They should finish with this, JP soloing in the end, and people singing and clapping and we all had the best time of our lives  :heart

Honorable mentions:
The song I like the most from DT14  ;D
Just Let Me Breathe! Preferably with some artistic tweaks and improv a'la OIAL (that rockin' mid section is a-w-e-s-o-m-e!)

Don't really understand the "be realistic" thing... There's like two DT songs ever that aren't likely choices for them to play live, and even those aren't that far of a stretch that they might.

But anyway...

- The Killing Hand
- Octavarium
- Light Fuse and Get Away

- Anna Lee
- In the Presence of Enemies

1. Home
2. Lines in the Sand
3. A Nightmare to Remember

My other two would be In the Name of God and Voices. I hooe this is still open for ‘voting’. This was harder than I thought, most of my potential choices are over 10 minutes long and I ruled out anything Mangini has played in front of an audience.

I can't think of another highly unlikely song to be played (or played again) other than The Best of Times..

I mean, for sure there are certain songs with less chances than others.. Honor Thy Father, Never Enough, You Not Me, Take Away My Pain, Status Seeker, TOWHTSTS, Light Fuse and Get Away (and I hope they're on the same page with me, also New Millenium and Just Let me Breathe)... come to mind... But I guess all of these still have very good chances to be played live at least once in one of the future tours..

1. Glass Prison
If you have a song like this you should play it. For me this is clearly the song that makes most sense to consider as a "hit" and should be played as such. Fans love it and it works really well for people who likes metal but aren't very excited about progressive metal. This song is usually how I introduce DT.
2. Octavarium
This is their true masterpiece in my mind. The song is gorgeous and one hell of a emotional rollercoaster live. Seen it once and been to their shows about 10 times, and that is just crazy considering how fantastic this is.
3. The Count of Tuscany
Just the ending alone makes it worth playing live. The crowd singing along and the spacey middle section is fantastic.

4. (close 3) Illumination Theory
Not a favorite on CD but live I would argue it's one of their best. Such a crowd pleaser and the energy is sooooo good!  :metal

Great thread, especially since the band will get the info.

1. Glass Prison. Just a great song live
2. Killing Hand. Amazing live classic
3. Burning my Soul. Been way too long since I've heard this live.

4. Cover my eyes. Accoustic seems better than electric for this song.

As an observation, I've been a fan since Awake and seen every album tour plus the QR tour, Gigantour, etc and DT has always been great about plating their catalog that there really isn't any bucket list song for me. The last one was Raise the Knife. Rush had Jacobs Ladder and the Camera Eye. So this was tough for me to answer.

2. The count of Tuscany - just an overall great epic that hasn’t been played in North America in quite some time .
3.in the presence of enemies I & II - would be a great to hear these played live ,even as a medley .

Wither- would be somewhat of a different song in the set list which could allow us fans to “cleanse our pallets “ from the intense dt moments

Stream Of Consciousness

It would be cool to see Octavarium as an encore. They did that last tour with A Change Of Seasons, so Octavarium is quite a possibilty from here on out setlist speaking, and with this rumoured "DOT" being a spiritual sequel (or something like that), the possibilty of it being played is much more likely. Also with speculations, if they so happen to play Scenes in its entirety I predict the setlist structure would be something like this.

Set I:

Set II:

That's an incredibly long show. When I saw them on the original SFAM tour, they played the album, then did a three song encore of Peruvian Skies, Paradigm Shift and an I&W medley. You're looking at a good 1/5 to 2 hours before even getting to SFAM.

Yeah, if it means fitting all Scenes From A Memory, a 70 minute set two is quite the feet. But, if I remember correctly, Set II on the Along For A Ride Tour exceeded or went close to the 70-minute mark with the Second-Half of Awake + Illumination Theory. How long was Set I??? 60 Mins if remember correctly. Let's speculate the new DT albums song lengths equal that of the self-titled except the 20-minute epic. A 60 minute Set I, a 70 minute plus set II, and finally a 24-minute encore seems reasonable; not too shabby. If of course, SFAM gets played in its entirety, which is extremely likely, to be honest. They did a 20 minute set for its 15th anniversary, it would be a missed opportunity not celebrating a career-defining album on its 20th anniversary. We'll just have to wait and see what happens. My setlist chart is based on DTs current setlist tendencies, and to my eyes, this is prob the setlist we're getting (excluding Octavarium).

1. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence (does that count? 😆). It's a masterpiece. I obviously understand why they split it up but that has definitely caused people to overlook the song as a whole. I'm really glad they kept it as 1 track on Score and if I could see it played live in it's entirety, one if my dreams as a fan would come true.

2. Octavarium - other than Six Degrees, I think this is DTs most diverse song. Musically it takes me on a journey and it's a journey that I really love. It's strange, it literally makes me feel like I'm moving through physical space. Like the song is a destination where I have fond memories. I don't see any of their other songs in a visual sense like I do with this track. Would be another dream come true as a fan.

3. The Count Of Tuscany - the song has much energy and beauty. I just hope that if I ever get to see it live they fix the tempo of the click at the end - I've seen videos of then playing it live with MM and that ending seems so slow which creates a lack of energy and kind of sucks the emotion out of the most emotional part.

Honorable mention

4. These Walls - this song rips live. I've seen them play it twice and both times it was a concert highlight for me.

5. The Great Debate - a song I wasn't particularly fond of until I saw it live. This is another one of those songs that every fan needs to see live. It's fantastic.

The glass prison (blame myself for it, but never experienced that song live)
Stream of consciousness (give James a break and let us enjoy the epic ending)
Breaking all Illusions (never get enough of that song)
------------------------------
I like the idea of the last tour: a mix of songs from different albums then a complete album (Scenes in this case)
and a grand finale:
Octavarium.

I'd go hope happy  :P

I realise they played DLPM last tour, but it was only like 3 shows, and only in the USA. I'd like to see it as a regular on a tour. Killing Hand is a top 3 DT song for me, so I'd LOVE to see that. Eve is just really great, and they haven't played it regularly since I&W, haven't played it at all since FII... It'd be great to see. :)

I'd put Lines In The Sand and In The Presence Of Enemies in my honourable mentions. Lines In The Sand was played by Sons Of Apollo recently, so while it's still on the bucket list to hear DT play live, there are others that are more immediate. Presence Of Enemies is just a fun one that I'd love to hear, which I think is an unlikely one.

1. The Glass Prison

Absolute monster of a song, long overdue for a comeback. This is my number 1 pick by a considerable margin and will be until such time it finally gets played again.

2. The Killing Hand

One of my favourite early-era DT songs that I am yet to experience in a live setting. I particularly like the version that's on WD&DR but I appreciate all the other slightly different versions that exist, such as LATM and the version that's on one of the '96 bootlegs (during the FII tour).

3. A New Beginning

Mainly because I'd like to hear it live in a standalone context, I think it's one of the few songs on the Astonishing with the potential to work just as well by itself, especially with that killer outro solo.

1. The Great Debate
2. The Bigger Picture
3. A Rite of Passage

I know ARoP is not well liked here from what I remember, but I think it would be really cool to see them play it live. It's just a solid rocker with a great chorus... I guess I could post that in the controversial opinion thread  :lol

I just listened to The Great Debate last night, from Happy Holidays. Wow! That song translates to a live version really well. James is great and Jordan's intro is extended from the studio version, and excellent. Good Choice!

I continue to be baffled by the infatuation with Eve and DLPM.  DLPM did NOT work well when they did it last year, and it wasn't received well.  Hence why they stopped playing it (and it was a reject pile song anyway).  Eve was, for all intents and purposes, a Kevin Moore solo piece, and I'd be shocked if they ever play it again.

Yeah, Eve certainly is a "piece..."

I mean...it was fine as filler in those early shows -- and who doesn't like a good James Joyce moo-cow snippet? -- but I'd think we're more likely to hear "Vital Star" or "Two Far" (or maybe "Particle E. Motion").

1. The Great Debate
With an extended JR keyboard solo / intro!

2. Bridges in the Sky
For a big sing-along with lights shining on the crowd!

3. Octavarium
For the encore... if they're not too tired!

But given what they are planning

Touring with an opening act with, therefore, less time to play?
Playing the entire new album? (daring move, after The Astonishing)
Playing SFAM? (unlikely, they're not gonna become an anniversaries band)

Just want to revisit this now that I can say what they are doing.  MirrorMask won and didn't even know it!

Also, since people still keep suggesting songs, did you guys not pick up on the part where I said I already submitted the list from this thread to the band?

Off topic somewhat but IMO if set 2 is dedicated to SFAM then the Encore simply HAS to be Metropolis Part 1. Even if it has been played time and time again.

Or what about set 1 ending with Metropolis Part 1...Not my fave choice, but a nice lead in!

Maybe it's like that Arrested Development scene:

Michael: I don’t believe this. Did you guys not read the letter?
Narrator: None of them had read past the word “unfrozen.”

Also: will there be a difference in the Scenes From a Memory portions compared to the 2000 and 2005 performances? As in: will they be adding actors, stage props, videos? Will there be a live hypnotherapist?
(I'm asking because you wrote that now you can say.)

About the setlist for the upcoming tour, and I know this isn’t going to happen, would love to see:

Set 1: DOT
Set 2: SFAM

Encore: Maybe a short song, since they would’ve just played two complete albums.

Learning to Live:  Aside from a brief segment in Smedley Wilcox (2007-2008 tour), I've never seen this one live, and it remains one of my favorite DT songs.
Great Debate:  Never seen this one live either, and I don't believe they've played it since their summer 2011 run
Peruvian Skies:  Would love to see this live, with them including a few bars from Pink Floyd and another few from Metallica.

Honorable mention: Sacrificed Sons.

Read the Rolling Stone Interview, we're getting all SFAM in the setlist. Let's speculate the 3 to 4 older cuts that may end up on the first set or encore.

I'd like them all to be MM era songs, honestly. At least, I hope there's no IAW tracks and that they play songs they never have with this lineup.

I'd really love if they snuck in a TA song, like those are short enough to sneak one in I'd think but you are probably correct.

Also, without hearing any of it, I dnt think I'd be against getting all of DOT but that seems really unlikely.

I'd be kind of surprised if they didn't include a TA song this tour.

Well, they've played the entire album to mixed reactions. Then they went into the Images and Words tour, played two songs - the single and the closing song, dropping a third almost immediately - and then scrapped them for older I&W outtakes, and dropped them as well without bringing back the Astonishing song.

My gut feeling is that they'll leave aside the album because "it works better as a whole anyway". Then I'm a big fan of the album so if they'll prove me wrong, that's very, very fine with me.

I don't know what ticket prices are like for you, but the local show in NJ for me has $25 tickets.  I'd say that's easily worth it for just the non SFAM set personally.  However the NYC show is not nearly as cheap so I'm not sure if that's the case near you.

My choices:

1. Anna Lee -- so simple, so moving. A nice addition to the set list to break up the metal, and give a nod to FII.

2. In the Name of God - I don't keep track of setlists, so not sure the last time it was played. But the last time I saw it was 2004 on the ToT tour. Love the song. Really powerful.

3. The Ytse Jam - 30th anniversary, the song that was your name sake, and what a great treat. Time to dust this one off and let it rip.

If tix are cheap enough and I can make the date then maybe, I'm just not jazzed whatsoever about it, that's 80 minutes on its own. At least the new album will be out so I can just focus on that.

I agree, but only because:
1) I've seen SFAM played in full 4 times already
2) Would much rather see WDADU in full
3) Without MP on drums, it just won't be nearly as good
4) Like you said, JLB has seen better days.

Anyway, it's still a classic album (I mean it will certainly be better than sitting through TA ) and I'm sure the first set and encore will be awesome.

Anyway, since they're playing SFAM, they could end the show with a majestic live ending for Finally Free and then, as an excuse to catch some breath, have the outro of the album play as it is on the record.

And then since it all ends with a static noise, you know, since they're at it and they need a song to start the encore.............. ;D

I would almost guarantee that TGP will be the encore. It's named all over this thread (for god knows what reason, the single most overrated song this band has ever written) and would fit in well with the ending of FF. After 2 full sets, I can't imagine anything much longer for an encore, if they actually even do one.

TGP would make sense, but I really hope it isn't. I saw that song the first time they played it live (I think -- BB Kings back in January 2002), and a few times after, and while it is OK, I just don't need to see/hear it again.

Well, it's not a given they'll play the song, and they could play it elsewhere in the set. And coming off two sets one of which is an 80 minutes long album, it makes more sense and balance to have a single song, maybe an epic, as encore. But just imagine how cool it would be for people sitting over the Finally Free outro thinking "yeah, we all know it" and then the static goes on and on and you hear the little bell and FFFFFUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!

Greetings everyone! I’ve been a longtime denizen of the forums, but up until now just as a ‘guest.’ With the recent treasure hunt and overall excitement for the upcoming record and associated tour (my wife and I are going to the San Diego show) I felt obligated to make an account. Being that I cannot wait to see DT live once again, I figured I’d start my first post by sharing my top 3 songs that I’d like to see in March.

1. Octavarium
2. Solitary Shell into Losing Time / Grand Finale
3. The Count of Tuscany

1. I mean... where to begin? This is quintessential DT for me. It enters this extremely unique sonic space where you have this magnificent journey being told through beautiful harmony, groove, and tight musicianship unparalleled in modern music. An absolute treasure.
2. I love these two songs together. Something about the human codition portrayed in these tunes really gets me.
3. Probably one of my favorite songs in their catalogue. I’ll never forget the feeling of just being floored hearing the opening instrumental section for the first time. Love this song.

Thanks for reading. Hope you all have an excellent day!  :tup

I followed along with the treasure hunt in its entirety, and even completed some of the puzzles:)

I’ve seen the guys 4 times now; once in San Diego, and 3 times in LA. Seriously can’t wait for this upcoming tour since they’re playing where I live (San Diego) and it just happens to be where they kick off the tour!

That would be awesome, but The Glass Prison is such a hyperactive and difficult song to play, not sure the band would want that to be the last song they play every night.  They are all 50+ now and I would imagine a song like that would be a bitch to play early in the set list, much less at the end after you've already played 150-180 minutes of music.
