If you've come in here to hate on the name, kindly GTFO.
Anyways, ITT we discuss shoegaze music. Loveless by My Bloody Valentine is an amazing album, and recently I've really been digging The Fauns.
The French seem to have a lot of bands that are mixing black metal into the mix as well; I recently discovered Les Discrets, and then Portucci turned me on to Amesoeurs, whose self-titled album is absolutely amazing; I've been spinning it pretty much nonstop.

Does this mean that it is free game to discuss drone in here, since they're kinda linked?
*insert vuvuzela drone*

That's probably better suited to this thread: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=14433.0
But it doesn't really matter.

My mate is in a 'Shoegaze' band. If you want to check out his music go here:

If you've come in here to hate on the name, kindly GTFO.
Who could you possibly be referring to? ;D
Anyways, I've heard Mew and Silversun Pickups described as "shoegaze," so I'll appreciate them. Mew moreso, since SSPU are an okay band with some very good songs.
-
Everything I've heard on the radio from SSPU has been awesome. Should I look into them further?
-
I've heard really good things about SSP, but I'm not really familiar with them.
-
How many indie kids does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
The number is really obscure. You’ve probably never heard of it.
Shoegaze is neat. A lot of what I listen to ends up falling under that umbrella.
-

So far it looks like their album Swoon has more good songs. "Growing Old is Getting Old," "Panic Switch," and "The Royal We" are my favorites.
-
One of my favorite shoegaze bands was Slowdive. Here is the video for the beautiful and sad "Alison": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol787NjpBS4
-
Not sure if M83 can be considered shoegze, but I think they might be. Check 'em out. It's like electronic shoegaze, maybe. Highly recommended.

I dunno any of the bands mentioned in the OP but the last time I went into a Sigz thread I became a Stolen Babies fan so I trust his choices.
What's the genres there? and which of these bands or albums should I try first?
Unless the albums are in French.

Just did a big music swap with my brother, and I grabbed both MBV's Loveless and Ride's Nowhere, which are basically the two cornerstones of the genre.
I also still have to listen to The Verve's debut, which I hear is very much shoegaze.
-
I could never really get into Ride to be honest, but Loveless is a brilliant album.
-
My brother never once spoke of MBV to me - I didn't even know he had it - whereas he's raved about Ride for the last year.

Wow, listening to Loveless for the first time now, and this is possibly the most underwhelming album I've ever heard. Is anything actually gonna happen in this fucking album?
-

I may hear something more on second listen, but at the moment style over substance much? Cool, you make interesting sounds with your guitar, now try not making the same sounds for six minutes straight and actually do something.
-
So I finally stayed awake long enough while listening to Insurgents to get to Twilight Coda. WHAT IS THAT? Is that shoegaze? Or noise? Whatever it is, it's interesting.
-

Well, to each his own I guess.

Honestly, that's a really good question. Maybe someone else has an answer, but I have no idea what I'd call Twilight Coda. It's really not shoegaze or noise though.
-
Listened to Loveless and I really like this. I thought the album went on a bit longer than it should have, but a great album regardless.
Where do I go after this?
-
Bumping this thread
I also want to say that I love the Pale Saints. :heart
-
Everyone should check out The Angelic Process; really heavy, shoegazy drone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYtQe2XjkQs
-
I love shoegaze. I prefer the classic shoegaze from the 90s to the modern "nugaze", but there are some groups from the new millennium that I do like. Some bands I really dig:
Slowdive
Cocteau Twins
The Daysleepers
Air Formation
My Bloody Valentine
Lush
Alcest
The Fauns
Ride
Chapterhouse
Cranes
If you haven't heard The Daysleepers' 2008 album Drowned in a Sea of Sound, you must. It is a staple shoegaze/dreampop record, and one of my personal favourites. The sound they get here is awesome, and the songwriting is great as well. Highly recommended.

Ooh, I have that one. I'm not terribly wild about it, but it's good.
Anyway, I might as well contribute since I've somehow missed this thread. First off, Deathconsciousness by Have a Nice Life is my favorite (favorite!!!) shoegaze album. It's much more drone/ambient oriented, but it's the perfect dreary, despair-ridden and oddly uplifting album to me.
Other shoegaze that I'm into:
Sweet Trip (shoegaze + breakbeats!)
Amesoeurs (the whole atmospheric black metal shoegaze mix thing)
The Angelic Process (Very drone heavy, like Have a Nice Life but not as good)
Giles Corey (Brilliant folk + shoegaze blend)

I have this but haven't listened to it. I'll do that tonight.

EXTREME NECROBUMP
I've been really getting into this genre recently. I don't enjoy all of it (I've given Loveless a handful of tries and it honestly doesn't do much for me), but I've found that if a band with a strong sense of melody or some good riffs incorporates shoegaze-y guitars, I'll probably love it.
Greet Death is a band I've been singing the praises of for a couple years now, and they were my gateway into looking for more bands like them. They're pretty much exactly what I'm describing above: strong, memorable melodies, loud riffs, and absolutely massive-sounding guitars. Their 2019 album New Hell has become one of my favorites, it has a ton of variety, is loaded with good songs, and has that wonderfully-depressing midwest vibe throughout the whole thing.
Since then I've discovered the South Korean shoegaze scene that's been popping off the past couple years, and man, does it have some real gems. Parannoul is the most talked-about artist of that scene, and for good reason. His 2021 album To See The Next Part Of The Dream was so good that it basically created the scene by inspiring other artists in South Korea to start releasing their own shoegaze music. I love that album. The production's a bit rough, but the songwriting is amazing, especially the melodies.
Another South Korean shoegaze artist I really like is Della Zyr. She released both an album and an EP (that's basically also an album) last year, and they're both quite good. She's much quieter and more atmospheric than the previous bands I've mentioned, with more of a focus on clean and acoustic guitars, and she has more of a post-rock influence. A lot of the same vibes as Alcest, if you enjoy them.

So yeah, anyone else who still uses this forum into this stuff? I'll probably use this thread to post more albums as I find them.
-
Nice. Yea I still love it. My favorite SG band right now is Ringo Deathstarr.
-
I have note come here just to hate on the name, but to say that I have been meaning to actually listen to some bands termed "shoegaze" so I know what exactly we're talking about. I have a vague idea, but I'm not really sure.

Amazing band name. :lol

My Bloody Valentine seems to be the go-to "that's what this genre is" band, but like I said earlier they're definitely not my favorite. Check out Greet Death if you want something less hazy/atmospheric and more rocking.
The genre's called shoegaze because the guitars typically have a lot of effects on them, which lead to early bands in the genre constantly looking down at their pedalboards during live shows, rather than the audience. :lol
-
I'm a fan of all three of those bands, I would say Greet Death and Parannoul especially. The latter put out a killer live album pretty recently, as well as one of the better 2023 studio albums.
As for the "best shoegaze band overall" for me it would be Slowdive over My Bloody Valentine. I love Loveless as much as most shoegaze fans but overall there's other shoegaze bands/albums I listen to more often. Like Slowdive, Lush or the first Verve album.
-
Have you heard the Parannoul / Asian Glow collab EP? It's pretty great, especially the 15 minute closer.
Greet Death is on a tour right now and I saw them live last week, it was fuckin' fantastic. They also played three unreleased songs and they all sounded great, so I'm really hoping for a new album this year or maybe next. The first one had kind of a dance-y beat to it and Sam did the vocals, the second was much slower and more depressing but had a wonderful lead guitar-driven chorus, and the third I think they've been playing for a while - it's faster than any of their other songs and ends with an insane wall of noise.
Oh, and they now have three guitarists for some reason. :rollin
-
I'll have to check out those three albums. I own Loveless and a couple other albums but otherwise I don't listen to much that's primarily shoegaze.
That said, a few artists I enjoy a lot have obviously been influenced. Alcest is pretty comfortably at the top of that list.

Do it! Della Zyr is definitely the most Alcest-y of the bunch, so I'm pretty sure she'll be right up your alley.
-
It's a genre that I like in theory much more than in execution. I like guitar effects and rich layering of sounds, but some of it is just too noisy for me. I do like a few bands such as Slowdive and some artists who experiment with it like Silversun Pickups. But generally I'm much more into dream pop-ish artists, which is basically the other side of the same coin.

So I've given it a couple listens now. You were right to recommend it, definitely up my alley. It's got a such a nice warm lingering buzz, and those dreamy vocals are a great fit.

Nice! It's a really great... EP? It's considered an EP even though it's literally longer than the album she released earlier the same year. :lol I've been listening to that album (Vitamins And Apprehension) recently too, and while I'm not sure it's quite as good as Nebulous You, I'd definitely recommend it as well.
-
Obviously you know what I thought of the track you sent in my roulette. It's on my list of albums I definitely will get to at some point to check everything else out.
Ringo Deathstarr is definitely a creative band name, I like one song of theirs, but I haven't explored further yet.
-

If I don't send you Greet Death or Parannoul by the end of the roulette (still undecided there) you should check them out too.
-
I listened to whatever Parannoul songs you sent Luke, but only once. They didn't really stand out, so they could be risky, but maybe multiple plays or different songs would bring something out of them.
-
I've gotten into shoegaze the past couple years, so I definitely will be looking into these suggestions. Thanks!
-
Alcest is indeed awesome.
Also, maybe more on the black gaze side but I’d recommend the song Adorn by Constellatia. That song is so beautiful and haunting.
-
Idk if they count because they also feel really psychedelic, but Weedpecker is really great too.
-
Anybody listen to Violet Cold? I had never heard of shoegaze but got into them because of their black metal similarities. Really love the band

Kosmik is a great album, although I haven’t heard the other ones. I like Violet Cold. Although I’m not sure how I feel about AI music. How does this works actually? Haha
Also, another suggestion, Show me a dinosaur « Plantgazer » is a pretty damn good dreamy yet heavy album.

I can’t find anything about that besides their bio (which also says they’re from Antarctica) so I think that’s a joke. :lol
-
Really? Not sure. Actually it looks like Violet Cold is the project of one guy (emin guliyev) according to Google. His description on Spotify looks pretty serious about the fact that this is AI music. I’m just not sure how much someone is involved into the music process when it’s AI music.

I know nothing about shoegaze so I don't know how similar or different VC's stuff is to others in the genre but Empire of Love was what got me into them. That album is all over the map but I love every second of it. I think you can download it for free on bandcamp. The whole catalog, which is deep, is like 26 bucks.
The Sommermorgan trilogy is great. Starts off moody and mellow and gets more intense. I think it's all instrumental too. There's not much I don't like.

It's not actually AI. I messaged him about it and he linked me to a statement which is no longer up. It was some convoluted theory about the human race not being real so we're all artificial intelligence.
So yeah, basically a joke.
He's actually from Azerbaijan though.
-
Really? Thanks for the info. I really didn’t get the joke. Although, it makes me like his music even more knowing there’s nothing AI about it. Good job to him for creating such great melodies I’ll give his album a few more spins.
On another note, maybe it’s just me who didn’t get it but I think he should take off the AI mention off his Spotify description:p especially since it’s pretty much his only description…

I agree. He seems like an odd dude but most creative types are.
For instance, one of the free songs for download on bandcamp is called Violence. It's basically a honk noise for one second. Thats it. The cover art is some weird bird cartoon.
-
Hahaha fair enough. Anyway, good for him if he’s having fun. Not the best marketing strategy but hey!
Thanks again for letting me know it’s not AI, it makes me more interested in his music.

Here's another shoegaze / emo album I found through RYM that I'll probably end up getting. It's a split between the artists Sadness and abriction, simply titled sadness // abriction. Very warm, summery, melancholic shoegaze interspersed with some really upbeat, almost pop punk-y passages. The production of it is also interesting; several of the songs start off way more low-fi at the beginning then suddenly get better once the energetic sections kick in, which I can't say I've really heard before. :lol

Pretty sure by default Spotify considers anything with only 5 songs an EP because it's dumb. :lol

I'm excited for it! They're definitely my favorite shoegaze band out of that classic 90s period.

Never heard of that band before. Just checked out the new single and it’s good. It reminds me of Cigarettes after sex.
