I've had the 420 Extra Pale Ale and the IPA, which I rated 3.5 and 4, respectively, on Untappd.

I've had a few myself.  I'm always looking for beer I've never had before.

There's a place called Burnt Hickory that I know my uncle likes, not sure if it's actually in Atlanta though. He brought up a couple beers with him at Christmas last year that were a little gimmicky but pretty good (e.g. Kahlua stout).

You homebrew Coz?

I've always wanted to, so my wife got me this BrewDemon starter kit (with the IPA starter):

https://www.brewdemon.com/craft-beer-kit-extra.html

Two or three times, I followed the directions, did everything as I was instructed, sanitized the shit out of EVERYTHING with Star-san, and every time, it came out tasting heavily of malt vinegar.  Not good.  So I don't know what I may have been doing wrong, but aside from that, I could tell enough to know that it would've been pretty tasty.  So with three "botched" attempts, I haven't bothered with it again.

Ah, that sucks. Sounds like something's set up shop somewhere in your equipment. Once bugs get in there they're quite good at hiding in little cracks and scratches. That happened to me a while back and I just ended up replacing all my buckets/tubing.

That's the thing though, first use right out of the box and it came out this way.  After the first time, I took everything apart and sanitized the nozzle and everything again.  I can only assume it's either in the water I use or in the pot I boil the starter in.

Yeah, unless they sent it to you with something already contaminated it's probably something in your yeast prep. Especially if you have a strong malt vinegar flavor after only a couple weeks. Picking up something lurking in the equipment usually takes a little longer to really take over. If you're not totally discouraged, I might suggest trying again and using liquid yeast without a starter. For a standard IPA you should be able to buy one pack of Wyeast (assuming still a 2 gallon batch) and pitch directly.

Each refill kit has two cans of thick goop that gets mixed with water and boiled and two little packets of dry yeast.  A lot of the terminology and ins and outs are still above my head at this point, but I certainly wouldn't mind trying again.

I may just have to make a trip down to Scotzin Bros, our local supply place (https://www.scotzinbros.com/) and have them set me up with supplies to try that don't come from Brewdemon.  I'll still use the conical fermenter I have from Brewdemon, but with different product.

Just took a quick look on their website, looks like a pretty decent supply of hops/yeast. Feel free to shoot me a message if you ever want to put together a recipe that's not a pre-mixed can or have any questions.

Grain is the way to go. I've had too many beers from those kits with the odd taste to them.

I mean eventually yeah, but I don't think there's anything wrong with starting out with extract batches. Going to the local shop and getting fresh extract/hops/yeast should be a bit better than any kind of canned kit.

Sometimes they do, but if you get good, fresh extract and are a good brewer you can make award winning beer with extract. I think new brewers are better off simplifying their brewday by cutting out mashing and focusing on the boil/fermentation. Then after a few batches once they're comfortable with their processes make the jump to all grain.

I've wanted to try a pumpkin ale , do you recommend the Southern Tier (you are probably Kingbrewland on this site) ?   I'm not really fond of predominant sweetness, more of subtle flavors.

Axeman is the tops for beer.  There are so many types. Are you looking for a sweet beer, a natural pumpkin flavor or a higher alcohol beer?

There is nothing more nasty than pumpkin beer.

While not a fan of Sam Adam's Boston Lager, I love the Boston Ale. That is tonight's drink(s) of choice.

The Southern Tier pumpkin beer, while good, is going to be a little on the sweet side. Dogfish Head Punkin is my go to if I want a four pack of pumpkin beer in the fall, and depending on what state you're in Schlafly's pumpkin beer is supposed to be very good as well.

Axeman is the tops for beer.  There are so many types. Are you looking for a sweet beer, a natural pumpkin flavor or a higher alcohol beer?

Peroni is a pretty good beer. It reminds me of Heineken and Stella. However, what the hell were you doing drinking a Heineken Lite? That's just horrible.  :lol

Peroni is very good. I prefer it over Stella.
