I like how on DTF, the Opeth thread tangents into a thorough discussion about what exactly constitutes "buttfuck nowhere". :lol

Yeah I hear you on that. But when it comes to an Opeth show I'm not picky at all. I mean ... it's Opeth!!!

About the album - I hope they introduce some guitar harmonies in the vain of Maiden - that would be awesome! This all sounds very interesting.

Well yeah, of course, but Heritage is supposedly a '70s album. Having a strong Maiden influence just wouldn't make sense.

I'm slightly disappointed the closest show is in NY. I'd go see these dudes if it was not a pain in the ass to beg and plead and cry to get there.

I'm sure there will be more dates...look how spread apart some of these ones are.

While I do see that, the dates that are spread out are after the NE run. I would like them to come to Philly, and that does not seem possible. Ah well.

Well, Maybe more of a DP or Rush influence? We'll have to wait till September 20th to find out.

Yeah true, just some personal wishes. Rush influence ftw! Deep Purple influence would be interesting. I'd love for MA to take a strong influence from RB.

Though I cannot deny that the album cover broke the winstreak of Opeth's album covers, (I mean, all of them look epic) I also won't deny that it greatly piques my interest for the music it will contain. Who knows, as I'm not really keen with 70's music, this may as well be the bridge to classic prog rock for me.

Anyways, on topic; I'm so fucking pumped for this. This whole new wave of prog rock stuff is my favourite niche at the moment, and considering the kind of stuff Opeth have been able to do with technical death metal in terms of progressiveness-ness, i excites.

I did a full translation of the Finnish pre-listening report. It's a bit rough, but you get the point. Also, I couldn't translate some of the slang words.
These are these. Even the shittier albums tend to sound good in the pre-listening sessions.

But still: let's put a guy subject to "broad pantleg" influences who's lived his wildest youth a few moments ago with glass(es) of red wine to the happening place of legendary ABBA records and let's press play. Doesn't affect anything or in any way? Yet when one brags that the album was mastered in NYC with a guy who's worked with floyds and bowies, I guess it's ok.

I still must say that the upcoming Opeth album sounded fucking good.

Facts:

The album was presented in 5.1 mood. "I didn't hear the record this way until today and I didn't even know that it'll be played to the journalists in surround. I had some doubts but the result gives me goosebumps", said the band leader Mikael Åkerfeldt. The mix worked although I usually resist presenting rock in some other mode than stereo. So does Mikael, apparently.

The album is approximately 56 minutes long and many things manage to happen in that time. Despite that, the unity sounds compact.

Things that came to my mind: Sabbath, Beatles, jazz, King Crimson, Cream, Rainbow, Floyd, funk, Purple, Piirpauke, classical music, My Dying Bride, folk, Love, Jethro Tull, Maiden…

There's no death metal or growling on the album. The production is powerful in a 70's way, but the walls of guitars which are usual in modern music are absent. Keyboards, piano and mellotron have a strong presence in the soundscape. Double bass and clarinet can be heard in many intros.

"We don't care about others' opinions", told Mikael, "and if the friends of death metal don't like this, it's their problem."

The frontman said he's been sick of "extreme metal" since the 90's, but couldn't embody why there were still growls on the previous Opeth album. Death was however taken as far as it could be, and its time in this context is over. Or at least the atmosphere is right now that.

"I've wanted to do an album like this since when I was 20", apparently satisfied Åkerfeldt said, and added that it couldn't have been possible without the metallic foundation which raised Opeth to great success. None of the journalists who heard Heritage had anything bad to say about it. Is this because of drunkness or the music itself, everyone can realize that in the fall.

Anyway, Heritage will cause hiccups to metal fans, but if one's wishes are more in the 70's, the album can't sound bad. This seems to be safe to say after one listen already.

The first 7 songs are unbelievably great, the last 3 less so.
I didn't translate the ending words, because they weren't important.

No growls.

I respect their decisions as artists and musicians, but I am really disappointed right now.

Well if he's been sick of the growling since the 90's, then he's pretty much had to deal with them for the last decade because that's what the fans wanted........now he's doin what he wants to do.

IMO it's a good thing that he's honest about his influences, and doesn't write death metal songs if he doesn't feel like making them. I'd rather take a weird but honest album over a forced attempt to make another Blackwater Park. However, the contrast between clean and harsh vocals is one of the main reasons why I like Opeth, so it's sad to hear them losing a dimension from their music.

Of course he isn't going to stop listening to them, but he probably wants more music like the past albums, instead of different music.

As do I. I love the versatility that heaviness and growls brings, especially to prog. It makes the album much more one-dimensional (of course, if the album rules, that won't matter at all).

Well...in the last 10 years we have had no less than four Opeth albums that fit that description. I think it is time to try something new. Realistically, this seems more of a once off experiment to get it out of Akerfeldt's system, than a genuine change of direction for the band. And if they do go back to growls after this album it will probably be a fresher and more exciting take on the concept, which mightn't have been the case if this was just the fifth of those Opeth albums in that vein.

on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.
