Accept are obviously the German heavy metal band which featured Udo Dirkschneider's tradmark vocals for years. After the band reunited but Udo not wanting any part of it, Accept decided to find a new singer. All of us were skeptical, but never have I seen a comeback of this sort of degree from any band. Accept have released two of the most powerful heavy metal albums the metal world has seen in a couple of decades.
After Blood of the Nations was one of my top albums of that year and some of you fellow posters convincing me to crack this baby open, I finally got around to listening to Stalingrad, and boy oh boy, this album could be even better, and I've only listened to it a couple of times. Mark Tornillo is absolutely perfect for this band and have rejuvinated the band that some would have never thought impossible. Both of these albums are simply perfect heavy metal and makes bands 20 years their junior sound like play school.
EDIT: Included UDO in this thread because I'm totally digging his older albums right now.

Thanks for creating this thread, wolfie. They're a great band.
On Stalingrad, I have been listening to it via YouTube while waiting for it to arrive, and I think that my favourite track is Shadow Soldiers. That main guitar melody after the choruses is just perfect. Runner-ups are Hellfire, the title track and Hung, Drawn and Quartered. The album loses a bit towards the end, but it's still a very consistent record with no song being anything less than good.
-
The last two have been awesome metal albums.
My problem over the years (first heard them at the Monsters Of Rock festival at Castle Donington opening the show in 1984) was Udo. Some great songs ruined by a crap voice and it spoiled the whole thing for me. The new guy, whilst having a bit of Udo in his voice is so much better.
I'm not usually in favour of re-recorded albums but I could go for a best of rerecorded with Tornillo.
-
Good thread! I hafe been mizzing a gerrrman heavy metal zthread on zthis zite!
Anyway i love Accept, my old band was heavily influnced by the german metal scene like, Accept, Edguy, Helloween, MSG and of course U.D.O. :metal
-

This would be a sensational idea. Especially with Sneap behind the desk.
Also, my fav song at the moment off the new record is the title track. That's gotta be a top 5 song of the year, it's perfect.
-
I love Accept. They're a TAC Top 10 band. I've been into Accept since Restless And Wild came out when I heard Fast As A Shark. I was in awe of that song, and it's one of the most influential songs for shaping my musical taste.
Strangely, I really took to this band despite Udo's vocals. No one here is pickier about vocals, but for some reason, they just fit.
Wolf Hoffman is easily the most underrated guitarists in metal of all time. So easy to see the Michael Schenker influence. He just has a magical tone that gives me the goosebumps when I hear it, and I instantly connect with the music. Just listen to Stalingrad and the intro to HD&Q. That's it!
Stalingrad is easily my album of the year this year, and there's nothing coming on the horizon that I can see knocking it off. I think it's better than Blood Of The Nations. Mark Tornillo has magically pulled off replacing one of the most unique voices in rock. Sometimes listening to Stalingrad, I think it IS Udo. His performance is that good.
In the Bravewords review, The said if Blood was Restless And Wild, then Stalingrad is more like Metal Heart. Metal Heart is a TAC Top 25 album of all time.
My favorite Udo era tracks are:
Bound To Fail
Guardian Of The Night
Fast As A Shark
Losers And Winners
Metal Heart
TV War
Dogs On Leads
When I saw them open for Maiden on the Powerslave tour, they turned in one of the top 2 opening sets I have ever seen.
I took this shot almost 26 years ago..

:omg: Two of the best heavy metal bands of all time together on stage? Dammit! If only I had already been in this world by then...
-
Really great post TAC.
-
The old bands are the only ones keeping that great guitar style alive. What happens when they all retire?

Check this band out.

I started this thread a few days ago and it only got 12 views.
Also the last half dozen Saxon albums have been terrific.
-
I saw them headlining on the Metal Heart tour. Awesome show. I recall they were one of the loudest bands I saw back in the day. Great times.
edit: and I haven't heard any of the studio albums from Saxon, but their last DVD was killer. One of the European festivals. Great to see the Europeans really eat that shit up. Americans never gave Saxon their due.
-
Never really realised how much of a killer guitarist Wolf is. He shreds on this album, as he did on Blood.
Also, I'm actually more of a later Saxon fan. I find myself listening to the Killing Ground to Call of Arms slab of albums much more than their old stuff.
-
We need a Saxon thread!
My fave is Power And The Glory.
And yes, Wolf Hoffman is great. Always has been!

When I reconnected with Saxon a few years ago I found they were surprisingly good. My favourite album is still The power & The Glory, and I still prefer the earlier stuff, but the last 2-3 albums have been very good.
Wolf Hoffman was always rated in the guitar mags in the 80s. Couldn't abide Udo's voice so I missed out on how good the band were. i'd like to see them live now.
-
I've always been a huge fan of Accept, but my interest actually went up after Blood of the Nations was released. That album is exactly what older metal bands should be releasing. It has an old school sound, but isn't dated in the least. I am hoping that Rising West (hopefully offically becoming Queensryche soon) will follow the same path as Accept. I could never get into the first two Accept albums; the sound is different then the sound they would pursue with Breaker. Love Balls and Restless- perfect metal albums. I was hoping for a new live cd with Mark on vocals but the idea of a rerecorded greatest hits album is a great idea too (hopefully Rising West does this too!). Nice to see interest in Accept and Saxon!
-
Just came back from the Accept gig a few hours ago. Man, those maniacs really delivered a great show. Listened to four of their albums and went there more because of a recommendation of a friend but I don't regret one penny! Two hours of double bass drumming, guitar and bass solos, great powerful singing and epic songs.
The opening song went something like that:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJJDJwQ9mmU
Seems I'll be listening to them a bit more from now on ;)
-
Great shit man, check their last two albums if you haven't already. they are amazing.
-

Agreed
-
Nice to see interest in Accept and Saxon!
I would also say that the last two Testament albums have been incredible. I was never really a fan back in the day, but The Formation Of Damnation and this year's Dark Roots Of Earth are fantastic.
That said, Stalingrad is my album of the year hands down!
-
TAC praising Testament????? I must have died and gone to heaven.....
Just busting your nuts....Last two albums have been a return to greatness...not that I dislike anything in their catologue to begin with
TAC question....what don't you like about their older material, they really haven't changed anything about the style of their music

Back in the late 80's, I just found them one dimensional, a thrashy AC/DC if you will, and I had always thought of them as a second rate Metallica. I wasn't a fan of Chuck Billy's vocals. They just didn't seem to go anywhere.
I do have a couple of albums of theirs that I haven't played in ages. I do plan on trying to rediscover them. I think TF of D and Dark Roots are truly "next level" for them.
So maybe it was a production thing..I don't know. They just never appealed to me, and when I wanted music like that, I went to Metallica for it, or Flotsam..
I did see them a couple of times, and thought they were cool enough, but when I sat down and listened to them, I could really only take a couple of songs at a time.
I did a Heavy Metal show on my college radio station from 1987-1990 and I played them all the time.
Oddly, I loved Accept! Udo's voice not withstanding. But I really attribute it to the tone that Wolf Hoffman could pull off. It cut right through me and it really was addictive.
-
Added UDO into this thread. Just going back through his older album cause I've always been a fan of the last few but never really fully checked his older stuff. Both of these are absolutely incredible;

U.D.O. is great. I just noticed most, if not all of the UDO albums, have been rereleased in the last year or so.
-
Yeah that's why I'm picking them up. I had all UDO albums onwards from Mission X and a best of a a few live releases but never the old stuff. Got them at a great price and the production on both are incredible.
-

Yeah its good that you posted that. I had checked about a year or so ago and pretty much all of UDO's albums were out of print at the time.
-
Yeah, same I remember the reason I never checked them out was cause I could never get my hands on them, AFM have done well remastering them. Not much extra though, just a live track and a film clip, but since I have never owned them before, it's all good.
-
A bit under the radar, but UDO has put together a very respectable solo career. Some great stuff throughout.

New Accept album, "Blind Rage," coming this summer on July 18th! :metal

Likewise. Both were terrific albums, so I'm hoping they keep it up! :metal

Hell Yeah!!!!!!
I read they will be including a few live tracks in the new release. This band has always been good, but with the last two releases, and hopefully this one, they are a killer band!
-
I could've sworn I read that they were working on a live DVD/Album. Must've scrapped it, I guess.
-
Hell yes!!! This is gonna be massive. Awesome cover too.

I remember reading that too. Perhaps some sort of full show on DVD will be released with the album.

Bastard, I thought you were posting a new Accept song! >:( :hat
But yeah, I like that one a lot too, one of my fav UDO ballads actually. Great solo from Igor too. I liked Rev Raptor quite a bit, it's not classic, but it's solid metal.

Damn, new album pushed back to August. But a full concert DVD as a bonus, hell fucking yeah!! :metal
-
That's an awesome setlist. Sucks about the pushback, I was looking forward to getting it at the same time as Priest. Oh well, the deluxe package makes up for it.
-
I knew they had the DVD on the can. Can't wait for this release.

Yes, as usual, it does! :metal

Was there any doubt that it wouldn't lol
Awesome tune and great video
-
That is a cool tune - as per usual with bands of this type it'll come down to whether there's enough variety on the album for me.

Great track but I'm getting a little bored of the vocals now. They need a better singer.

I don't know. I mean what did you think of Udo, or was he just so unique?
I don't have any issue here. To me, the hook in Accept is still about Wolf Hoffman's tone.

No, I hated udo's voice and it was the reason I was never an Accept fan. I've enjoyed the last 2 but its getting too samey as the guy has no range at all. I'm not even asking for a melodic rock singer. They had that as well on Eat The Heat but the music was watered down. I'd like a more melodic but still powerful vocal I guess.
You're right about Hoffman though. :metal
-
Pretty stellar tune.

On Dime in the last couple of weeks, there's been some great classic shows uploaded. Firstly, a show from 1981 from Switzerland which is surprisingly decent quality. Also a 1985 show from Stockholm which is famtastic.
-
So the new album is just fantastic. Every song is catchy and has great riffs and solos. You really can't ask for much more. I might be in the minority but I think I prefer this one to the previous two as great as they are.
Blind Rage is going in my top 10 at the end of the year for sure.
-
I'm looking forward to picking this up.
-
Looking forward to Tuesday! All the reviews have been very positive so far
-
I used to love Accept back in the early 1980's, but pretty much lost interest when Udo left.
I haven't really followed either since, but recently was checking out Wacken 2014 on YT and decided to check out Accept.
I was shocked just how bad the current singer is, truly awful I didn't last too long and decided to check out some live UDO.
Seems that Udo has aged very well and still sounds great.

I want to preface this by saying that I have not heard anything at all from the new album...and in fact, have not heard anything from the new lead singer except for a couple of samples from the first album with him "Blood of the Nations"...and I have to ask... REALLY???
I mean, if anything, from the small sample I heard from BotN, I was surprised at how much he sounded similar to Udo, and what a fantastic job they had done of finding a replacement. I can't believe we listened to the same guy...
-
I think Mark has done a fantastic job. He can sound abit like UDO but also brings his own style. A perfect match for Accept.
-
I was shocked just how bad the current singer is, truly awful I didn't last too long and decided to check out some live UDO.
Wow. I think Mark is fucking awesome.
-
I honestly think Mark is better than Udo.
-
Live/Studio two totally different settings.
I spent most of yesterday searching YT for live Accept/UDO video's.
Mark might sound good in the studio, but what I have seen of him live (pro shot/recorded) he isn't any good and I won't be going to see Accept when they tour here later this year.
-
For me Udo never sounded great. The new guy is fine in the studio and its unlikely I'll get to see them live.
-
I honestly think Mark is better than Udo.
Agreed.
-
Mark has been fantastic on the studio albums and while he did NOT have a great showing at Wacken, he's not that bad live.
-
Not a fan of Accept, but for many years my step dad pronounced the name Assept, so one day maybe 2 years ago I heard Eddie Trunk pronounce it correctly and my whole life was a lie. Who was I to question? He was the supposed fan, and I just figured since it was a band name, they could pronounce it however. I even called pronounced it as Accept, and he corrected me.

Looking forward to watching the DVD tonight

Agreed. It's an excellent metal album.
Watched the dvd earlier. Pretty good but I find dvds hard to watch when they are overdubbed and the vocals appear that way to me. May not be, but these days I find that the great picture and sound quality make live dvds look and sound weird. Too perfect. I was a bit disconnected watching it because of it. Same with the iced Earth live dvd.

I haven't got the DVD yet, but I actually agree with what you are saying. Seems a lot of DVDs lately have some sort of disconnect with the vocals.

The older stuff with Udo could have been great with this singer. Unfortunately Udo sounds like drunken gay german bloke snarling at the world into his pint. Other people like it though
-
Wow... what have I been missing??!?!?
You've been mising a shit ton!
Like I said, this one has a much more classic feel than the previous two Tornillo albums.
Chad, check this track out. It's Bound To Fail from 1985's Metal Heart. Wolf Hoffman is sporting the same guitar tone. And it has one of the most glorious outros ever recorded!

Yeah, you've been missing some good shit. Definitely chack the last two albums for a start. Restless and Wildand Metal Heart are classics too.

Got my CD/DVD copy. I haven't even bothered with the CD yet, this DVD is fucking amazing. It's worth the price alone. Such a generous bonus to an album. There's a few overdubs here and there, but who gives a fuck. Great performances and setlist.

Yeah it's awesome. Great setlist!
I would've bought it as a stand alone release.
-
I would rank it as one of the best concert DVDS I've ever seen
-
And to think it's a bonus DVD is astounding. Bands need to learn from Accept what a bonus DVD actually means.
-
Bands can learn from Accept on how to play true heavy metal
-
Bands can learn from Accept on how to play true heavy metal
Amen.
Popped the cd in the car and have just finished the first three songs. Man, the two openers are killer but what about Dark Side of My Heart, this song blew me away, this is classic Metal Heart style Accept. :metal
-
Dark Side of My Heart might be my favorite so far from the new disc
-
Dark Side of My Heart might be my favorite so far from the new disc
I think I listed that as my fave too in my little review ...........nice little change up with the keys etc.....adds some atmosphere to it. When done well I really like that sort of thing - I wouldn't compare the songs but A Touch of Evil on Painkiller is another.
-
I'm really liking what the band are doing on this album. Dark Side is definitely the best song, it's an absolute cracker. Empire is classic slower Accept with a killer main riff, Wanna Be Free has a terrific anthem like chorus, Bloodbath Mastermind is a metal ripper too. I wasn't keen on AC/DC references at the start of Ashes, but it actually turned out to be a great melodic stomper. Like the different type of work the band is doing on the Curse too. Terrific album, and a nice change compared to the last two. The band are doing their thing, but keep it nice and fresh here.
-
The Curse was my other favourite I think............I like the straight out rockers but they need a couple of change ups and on this album its those songs that grabbed me the most.
-
The Curse was my other favourite I think............I like the straight out rockers but they need a couple of change ups and on this album its those songs that grabbed me the most.
I think that's exactly what they have done really well here. Very fresh, yet still very Accept.
-
I like that it's different to the last two. A bit more straight ahead.
Like classic Accept. With a better singer
-
Definitely of the three latest albums, this one has a more classic feel to it.
But they are all good.
What Accept and Saxon are doing these days is nothing short of amazing. I seriously feel like it's 1984 all over again..but better!
-
So I'm not the only one who thinks Tornillo is miles better than Udo?
Blood of the Nations was fantastic, Stalingrad not as good but still great. I've yet to hear Blind Rage but should definitely check it out soon. I'm not too familiar with the old stuff, minus the classic songs like Balls to the Wall, Metal Heart, Fast as a Shark and so on. Seen this band live one time, it was one of the better gigs I've seen! I love Hoffmann's riffs and melodies.
-

I gave Udo fronted Accept another go last night, played the best of but just can't stand Udo's voice. Nothing wrong with the songs, just the vocal.
Just remembered I saw them live in 84 at the Donington monsters Of Rock festival. Where i was stood you couldn't really hear Udo and I thought they were great. My mate got the album when we got home and it was ... a let down.
-
Nothing wrong with that Lowdz.
I actually couldn't believe I liked the band with him singing. Goes way against what I like in a singer, but I basically grew up on it. It was raw, unique. And Wolf Hoffman's was just incredible.
I used to do my paper route to Breaker playing in my Walkman way back when.

I love the one two punch of "breaker" and "run if you can" from the Breaker album.
-
New UDO album is fucking great. Best thing he has done in a long time IMO.
-
I heard one track and wasn't impressed. On your word, I will definitely give it another shot.
What the best couple tracks?
-
Only heard it once but;
Speeder
Pain
House of Fake
Words in Flame
Shadow Eyes (bonus track) Dunno why this is a bonus track, it's easily top 3.
-
Will check 'em out!
Thank you~
-
If it's the title track that was released that you are talking about, I wasn't impressed either when I first heard it. It's fine within the context of the album though.
-
You always know what you are getting with UDO

Yeah, but this new one has a lot more variety and depth within the songs. It seems they have put a lot more thought into the songwriting this time.
-
UDO needs to turn it up a notch in order to keep up with his arch rivals, Accept
-
This new one I think could challenge Blind Rage. You guys I think would never agree but I'm loving it a lot.
-
just checking out some of the new UDO tracks- good stuff

Wolf, those UDO tracks sound solid. Man, he still sounds great. Still going strong. Amazing, really.

Certainly a good album but not quite as consistent as Blind Rage IMO - not far off though. They both have (looking at my ratings) 3 stellar tracks , 4 or 5 very good tracks and the UDO just has an extra filler or two. Cut off two or three tracks and it'd be much better - as is the case with many albums these days.
My faves: Speeder, Pain , Secrets In Paradise
-
I really liked Pain. I will be getting this.
-
Yeah, it's just different than Blind Rage, but I think I'll take this one over it. It's on repeat in the car, I don't think I've ever been this impressed with an UDO album. The lineup change proved good things. Steelhammer was an okay step in a different direction, but they nailed this one. I just love the spread of variety over the tracks.
Pain is definitely a highlight, if not the best one. I laughed though when Breathless came on and it has the exact same chorus haha. I'll take it though. My favourite actually might be Shadow Eyes. What a slashing track. No idea why this would be a bonus track.

It's just good metal man, make sure you get the one with the 2 bonus tracks.
I'm keen to try and hunt down the Japanese extra track too.

Mine doesn't have Shadow Eyes..........freakin Jap bonus tracks :censored

why do the Japanese always get the great bonus tracks?? :lol
-
Mine doesn't have Shadow Eyes..........freakin Jap bonus tracks :censored
Shadow Eyes isn't the Japanese bonus track, it's just one of the digi bonus tracks.
-
OK..........freakin digi bonus tracks :censored ;D
-
hehe.
There's a link on youtube with the full album and the three bonus tracks. Shadow Eyes starts at around 56 minutes.
We're not really missing much with the Japan bonus track, Fallen Angels, but it's a decent enough tune.

This is pretty cool, but seems like a novelty and something I wouldn't listen to over and over.
-
I thought that was pretty good.
-
I may get this album.
-
I would have no issue purchasing it, but I know it's something that won't get repeated spins. I'll probably end up getting it anyway. :lol

Looking forward to this one.
Did you end up getting the Restless and Live DVD Jason? A really nice package, I enjoyed it a lot.
-
Yes I got it and only played it once, but I did really like it. I didn't realize until it was released about the new guitarist and drummer and the slight adjustment of the sound. But it wasn't anything too noticeable.

It's pretty much the Wolf and Mark show now. I like it, but I actually prefer the DVD that came with Blind Rage, that was awesome. Would love that on cd.
-
I totally agree about that dvd. I much prefered that show and wanted that to be released on cd as well.

So the only Accept album I own is Balls To The Wall and I bought upon release way back when. There was just so much new music I was into, I never followed them.
Couple weeks ago Blood Of The Nations came up on my YouTube feed so I listened to it. Absolutely killer metal album from beginning to end. That prompted me to listen to everything they did. Lots of great songs and albums I missed out on. I'm going to see if I can find a reasonable box set.

Accept! :metal
Top 10 band for me. I got into them when Restless And Wild was released and have followed them ever since. Blood Of The Nations is an amazing comback album.

I posted that but turned it off after the solo, so yeah, will reserve judgement for the full album.
-
Definitely. I still expect to like the album. It's just Wolf left as far as the band goes (not including Mark), but I definitely liked their last album so I'm still hopeful.
Peter Baltes is now playing bass for Udo.
-
I've really liked UDO's output the last few albums. I know you're not big on his solo stuff but he's been surprisingly consistent.
To be fair, this Accept song sounds like anything off the last few so I still think it will develop into a pretty good album. I remember hearing The Undertaker when it was released and wrote the band off, album turned out to be killer and the song grew and worked fine in the album. I'm not too worried.
-
I actually liked The Undertaker from the jump.
Oddly, I'm listening to Animal House now. Funny how the album was written by Accept and they let him use the songs.
Lay Down The Law is ACTUALLY Accept. I'd love to hear the Accept demos for this.
I like Udo and all, but there was something special about the BAND for me. Their sound, tone, and style. I guess I've always held that against Udo's solo career.

Now that you mention that, I think I remember us debating our opposing views when it came out haha.

Yes, apparently that song apparently is performed by Accept. That record has a few real nice classics on it. To be fair, UDO hasn't dropped the ball all that much in his solo outings for me.

That's an interesting take.

I can dig this I used to see TT Quick often back in the day, TT was really great back then they would crush. Mark is an interesting guy.. still miss UDO being in the band , but thats just me being a tad Old Skool
solid is a good description as its pretty formula but enjoyable
