Yeah, I'm gonna watch Second Gig at some point too. Right now I have to watch Elfen Lied, Blue Submarine 6, Paranoia Agent, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Le Chevalier D'Eon, and Full Metal Alchemist.Yeah, I was planning on watching it once I'm done with the series.
I'd also recommend you check out the Cowboy Bebop movie - its was really good.

Oh and for christs sake make Blue Sub No. 6 a top priority. It's beyond fucking wonderful.
One anime I highly recommend is Last Exile. It has a fantastic Victorian/sci-fi/steampunk style to it which is incredible, along with a great story and some really excellent characters. I believe they're releasing the box set for about 35$ next month, and of course I'm sure you can find it somewhere on the interwebz.

I'll have to check that show out, I've been wanting to watch a new anime.
Sigz, you should watch Neon Genesis Evangelion if you haven't already.
I've gotta check out Last Exile, Blue Submarine No. 6 and Wolf's Rain now. I don't know which one to start first.

So, I just rewatched FLCL and it still makes absolutely no sense to me.I've watched FLCL maybe 5 times total and most of it still doesn't make sense :lol. But it does seem to make a bit more sense each time.
Also, I've started Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Cowboy Bebop.
I'll post this here instead.

You won't be disappointed with those 2 you're watching now.
About Elfen Lied...
I have no way to watch it without buying it blindly... it sounds like it's worth it... is it?
So has anyone seen that they're putting up episodes of the new FMA series (subbed) on Hulu? Seems like its looking more to the manga than the first series did, and its still the same level of awesome.
I just watched Akira, some days ago. I felt that the story had way too many elements for just one movie. The animation was great, though.
Metropolis is still my favourite Anime, and New Angel..., but that's a different story.
Just finished Ghost in the Shell SAC - god, the last four episodes or so were phenomonal (along with the rest of the series).:tup

I watched the first episode, but then decided to watch Elfen Lied first.
Allright, so I'm a little past being halfway done with Elfen Lied. All I can say is holy shit. This is one of the most twisted series I have ever seen. It's incredible, but fuck. That episode creeped me the fuck out when I first saw it.
SPOILERSSSSSSSSSS***********
I just saw the episode where the kids killed the dog, and then Lucy slaughtered them. fuck.
Just finished Elfen Lied. That was one of the best things I have ever seen. Ever.

I have no idea what things you have seen but I agree.

I've started watching Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni and Azumanga Daioh...the latter of which is a superb way to kill brain cells.
Liking both so far.
Just bought Last Exile on DVD and am watching it now. It's pretty awesome so far, thanks for the recommendation Sigz.

Moving on from the troll, I've started watching Paranoia Agent. I watched maybe the first third or so back when it aired on CN, but I never finished it. Very, very bizarre show.

Agree to disagree. You can't wrap your mind around how one can enjoy an animated series (though comparing it to American cartoons is just silly), and I can't grasp why one would clearly come here only to provoke the people that do like anime. Well done. You've accomplished...nothing. Except touting your own childish mindset and pissing off a few anime fans. If you're going to bash something, do it with more grace and intelligence next time as opposed to typing up something my 14 year old sister could.

I used to like anime. I understand how one can enjoy an animated series. Not provoking. Chill. And I still fail to realize how Anime is fundamentally any different from american cartoons anyway.
it's a load of bullshit to come into a thread and contribute absolutely nothing related to the topic (not only that, but demean the topic)
truly analyze it, and you'll see character development, underlying elements of a storyline that one can see in novels and feature films that simply aren't present in these American cartoons. If anyone wants those things, they should logically go to novels and films. Or Real Life.

I caught the first few episodes of Outlaw Star the other night. Back when Toonami had a decent line up (I'm not sure if it's even in existence any longer), I'd see this show on every now and then, but never really paid any attention to it. It doesn't seem to be too big of an anime, but its entertaining because its obvious the show clearly doesn't take itself seriously. Might have to pick up the rest. Anyone else seen the series in its entirety?

Outlaw Star is awesome and definitely worth your time. I've seen the whole series and love it. It's very similar to Cowboy Bebop in a lot of ways actually. Both are about bounty hunters, and both were released in 1998 in Japan. Outlaw Star is like the less popular little brother of Cowboy Bebop, although it's still very amazing.
I have finished all of the Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (Kai/Rei) that's out so far, I absolutely love this show. I also finished Azumanga Daioh and Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan. I currently have Excel Saga, Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop, and Samurai Champloo to watch, probably going to start Serial Experiments Lain and Berserk at some point.
Too many.
Seen that :lol
Ok, to clarify a bit, I've seen most 'mainstream' animes, the stuff that gets shown on Adult Swim and whatnot, beyond that I don't know much.
Looks like there's a few different series, which one do I start with, or does it matter? The wiki page is kinda confusing me.Seen that :lol

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (Kai/Rei)
It's absolutely brilliant. There is the occasional silly episode, but over all it's awesome.
NEON GENESIS EVANGELION
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is the first series, Kai completes the story that the original started, and Rei is a couple of OVAs that occur after the main series.First episode was kinda meh, but now after the second episode I'm definitely intrigued. I think I'll like this series :tup
I've got time to kill, so how about a suggestion for what to watch for me? I'm looking for something more dark and serious, like Death Note or Elfen Lied. Something with some depth. Preferably not a very long series, and something that's complete (not still ongoing).
I haven't seen too many animes, so just name anything and odds are I haven't seen it.

Just started Ergo Proxy, about 5 episodes in. Really fantastic so far.

Ahh, wonderful choice, Sigz. Ergo is my fourth favorite anime. Beautifully animated, voice actors are top notch, and while the storyline may seem a bit convoluted at times, its nothing short of fantastic all around. Also home to one of my favorite soundtracks. :tup

Yeah, the animation is gorgeous. It was a pleasant surprise to see it directed by the guy who did Witch Hunter Robin as well; I love that anime. Right now it's subbed, would you recommend getting the dubbed version instead?

In other news, I just finished the 8th episode of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood and I'm loving it more and more. It most definitely emits a vibe closer to that of the manga than the original series did. Each has it's own pros and cons but I'm liking Brotherhood more thus far. Charming and witty.

This anime I'm watching is very fucked up sometimes, I love it. Just finished the third 'arc' or whatever. Not sure what the deal is yet with the repeating story lines, but its neat.
Anyone heard of a movie called The Sky Crawlers?
I keep on seeing a preview for it at the store I work at (on the floor model tv's) and it looks pretty interesting and the visuals look really nice.

I've heard of it and been tempted to purchase it from time to time as it's directed by Mamoru Oshii, the same guy who did the Ghost In the Shell movies. The art reminds me a lot of Last Exile.

Ah, Ouran High School Host Club, nothing to be ashamed of! Great shojo manga. I've never seen the anime but if you get through the entire series, tell me what you think, it'd be another good addition to the growing list. Shojo isn't really my thing, but I've read a few very intricate, well thought, well constructed manga that have caught more than just my attention. Good stuff.

Now that I have finished Code Geass I don't know what to watch. I have the following on my computer waiting to be watched:
Tokyo Majin (which I have been watching with a friend)
Serial Experiments Lain (which I have been watching with a friend)
Mushishi
Outlaw Star
Peace Maker Kurogane
Hellsing (the original, not the OVA, I've seen the OVA)
Also, I'm partway through watching School Days and Monster online.
So which should I watch next, of these?
YES! YOU ARE NOW ONE OF MY NEW FAVORITE MEMBERS! ADDING USERNAME TO MEMORY NOW.ANYONE!??!?!I love Ouran High School Host Club :)
Jesus fuck, I watched the remake of Evangelion, that 1.0 movie, and it's fucking amazing. The actual angel fights play such a larger role in these films then they did in the show. Not to mention how fucking intense the fights are. Also, they did a amazing job on the soundtrack. I already can't wait for 2.0 to get released.Isn't this only in Japanese at the moment? Because I heard this is actually coming out soon with english dubs, which then I shall be all over it.
Cowboy Bebop.
Samurai Champloo.
Monster.
Serial Experiments Lain.
Ergo Proxy.
HEY GUYS! Remember how awesome Higurashi no naku koro ni was? Well the guy who made it made a new murder mystery called Umineko no naku koro ni (FYI higurashi... means when the cicadas cry, and umineko is when the seagulls cry).
ITS EVEN BETTER THAN HIGURASHI WOOOOO! Plus the anime adaption (I read the visual novel) is only on the sixth episode so you can catch up quick!
That is all.
Well not quite, go get Baccano! all your slackers, it's one of the best things ever. Promise.

Shit, I just did that today around midnight. Yeah, it's pretty awesome. It was condensed, but it didn't really lose any of the emotions or epicness that I thought it would. Very well done. This re-telling of the series is outstandingly well done. The angels, the characters, the emotion, the combat/action. All of it's there, but intensified 10x. I truly feel even more attached to the story and it's characters through this film than I did from that actual television series (not counting The End of Evangelion, nothing really compares to that though). The soundtrack is also something to be praised here. It just sounds so right for each situation given (my favourite being the scene where Shinji is given the option to fight the 4th angel, and the piano in that scene is just so haunting, but works so wonderfully).
I cannot wait for 2.0.
tl;dr I LOVED 1.0: You are (Not) Alone.
FINALLY THIS GODDAMN STUPID HARUHI ARC IS OVER. WOW THANKS FOR MAKING A NEW SEASON AND WRITING LIKE 2.5 EPISODE'S WORTH OF MATERIAL FOR IT GUYS. PLUS THE CREDITS SEEM TO INDICATE THAT THE SEASON IS OVER. ARGH.
On another note, I'm enjoying Mushishi quite a bit. Just watched the one with the mountain and the weird bell noise from nowhere.

I'd go with the dubbed, the voice acting is quite good.
You may have already seen it considering its popularity, but I highly recommend watching Spirited Away. It's a wonderfully fantastical film about a young girl and her mother and father that, while moving to a new home, a new place, discover a "road" to the spirit world. The young girl ends up getting stuck in this world by entering a bath house and discovers many different spirits and otherworldly customers of this bath house. It's such an amazing film in both score, visuals, and plot. And if you have seen it, watch it again so I didn't type this for nothing. :P

Has that been translated yet? As far as I know none of the Higurashi ones have been translated, so I didn't think it would have been, either.
Speaking of Umineko, does anyone else who has watched it (or School Days, or Fate/Stay Night, or any other anime based on a visual novel (besides Higurashi since it mostly manages to avoid this)) get annoyed by the sloppy conversion of game mechanics? Like this red letter thing? Surely they could have come up with a better way to convert it than just having red letters fly across the screen? School Days was mostly ok with this, but there was one scene where someone asked Makoto a question and he paused for a really weird amount of time before answering correctly...just long enough to have picked a choice were it a game. Haven't fully seen Fate/Stay Night yet so I don't know if it does anything like that, but it was just an example :p.
Someone mentioned playing visual novels in here, and they're more of an anime thing than a game so I'll ask here: I'm playing one right now and I'm frequently waiting like 30 seconds between dialog boxes. Is this normal?
I bought Elfen Lied on Saturday (found it used at a local store) and practically watched it all at once. This is a great anime. A good recommendation from the forum :tup:tup :tup :metal

So, a theater near me is going to be showing You Are (Not) Alone twice, which I was at first interested in, until I found out it's the dub. Why would I even want to see that? :\
lolSo, a theater near me is going to be showing You Are (Not) Alone twice, which I was at first interested in, until I found out it's the dub. Why would I even want to see that? :\
Well, as it turns out I won a free ticket from a contest that Anime News Network was doing, so I guess I'm going to see it :neverusethis:
Personally, I think the NGE dub is one of the worst I have ever heard. There are some I actually enjoy, and some dub actors I do like, but NGE is just...bad. Especially Shinji. His voice is more feminine than it was in Japanese and he's played by a man in English (was a woman originally). You've got a point with Shinji, lol. But he's a pussy the entire series anyway, so yeah. D:
Actually, Aya Hirano is playing Dende now, and she wasn't even born when the original show started, so it's not all the same cast :p
What I've seen of Brotherhood seems...sorta lame to me. The (re-)addition of apparently random chinese royalty sorta throws me off.
Because it is an amazing movie! The soundtrack is amazing, one of these days im going to get it.So, a theater near me is going to be showing You Are (Not) Alone twice, which I was at first interested in, until I found out it's the dub. Why would I even want to see that? :\

I'm watching Akira. For the first time. I have no excuse for not having seen this sooner, but eh. It's good so far.
Sorry Faemir, but I still think Higurashi is superior to Umineko. We'll see, though :pI'm watching Akira. For the first time. I have no excuse for not having seen this sooner, but eh. It's good so far.
You're right, you have no excuse :p
Make sure you watch Perfect Blue next :D
I have way too many shows on my plate right now. Catching up with FMA Brotherhood, watching Umineko, watching Rurouni Kenshin, watching Outlaw Star, my friend wants me to watch Peacemaker Kurogane, not to mention a couple other animes I'm (re)watching with people. Too much stuff :p
I refuse to believe it could be funnier than Azumanga Daioh or Haruhi >:(
The test is: Do you think Excel Saga or Puni Puni Poemi are funny?
I should also probably mention that despite being very gorey and full of action, Baccano! also is the funniest anime i've ever seen by far. Not that i've seen many funny ones, so a better comparsion would be that it's funnier than most comedy that have come out in the last decade :tup
The beginning of Gurren Lagann is a little shaky, imo, but it increases in epicness tenfold in the second half.
Yeah, I'm not really a fan of mecha stuff either, but TTGL is one of my favorites.

You know, I just saw a thread on this series earlier today. I came into this thread getting ready to ask about it and, lo and behold, Genowyn already has me covered on the most recent page.
For anyone curious, the thread was about who would win: a world full of epic level DnD mages or the cast of TTGL. All of the talk about throwing galaxies at people and being able to hit everything everywhere at any point in time all at once had my interest piqued.
How good is Serial Experiments Lain, I've been meaning to check it out for a while.
But the anime that has caught my attention the most recently is Fairy Tail.
How good is Serial Experiments Lain, I've been meaning to check it out for a while.
It's good. It's quite surreal.
Watching Gurren Lagann atm, episode 8 is on right now.
Btw, what is FMA brotherhood - a remake of the original series?
The original certainly had it's own merits, though. Namely Cyborg Archer.
Now you can watch the new one and know what really happens :lol
I'm told Ghost in the Shell has what you're looking for, though I haven't seen it myself. Serial Experiments Lain is also very idea-based.I have been meaning to check out Serial Experiments Lain for a long while, i'm gonna see if I can watch a few episodes today.
I love how sick and twisted Umineko is getting ;D
I love how sick and twisted Umineko is getting ;D
I don't even know what the hell is going on anymore. They keep introducing new characters and not really explaining who they are, and all the stuff with Ange makes no sense D:
I'd play it but I'm poor and there doesn't seem to be any avenue by which to..."obtain" it.
Speaking of Visual Novels, I finished Fate/Stay Night. That game is SO EPIC. If anyone here hasn't played it, do so! Put the non-ero patch in if you need to, because that's not even the good part of the game. Plaaaaaaay iiiit.
Do they have all these anime shows on netflix, im thinking about renewing my subscription and finally being able to watch anime on TV rather than on my computer.
I know that netflix will have most of the shows listed on their library, but that does not mean that they come in a day. When I wanted to watch Italian horror films, or some independent titles they had to ship most of them from across the country, and it took a long while. I would prefer not to have to wait a week between each series, but oh well.Do they have all these anime shows on netflix, im thinking about renewing my subscription and finally being able to watch anime on TV rather than on my computer.
Or you could hook your pc up to your TV!
try looking on https://www.netflix.com/BrowseSelection :)
Ugh, I got the Realta Nua patch but it only added some background music, no voices, despite being almost 100mb ¬_¬

Realta Nua adds some cooler CGs to a couple of scenes near the end of the game. The voice patch is something separate.
Yes. Yesyesyes.
Deathnote is certainly not the best anime ever, but it's absolutely better than all those perpetually running Shonen anime (ie Bleach, One Piece, Naruto). The first half is certainly better, and I would almost say to stop watching after a certain event, but the ending makes it all worthwhile. L is a great character, and Light is pretty awesome too. I don't know if you've seen Code Geass, but imagine Code Geass without mechs. It's all about mind games and long complicated Xanatos Gambits, etc. It's pretty damn awesome.
If you like stuff like that I urge you to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. It is probably my favorite show ever, and End of Evangelion is my favorite movie. The show is just dripping with psychological style, and has a lot of philosophical influence as well.Yes. Yesyesyes.

I watched Deathnote a while ago, and thought it was one of the most mature, dark and thought provoking series ever. Well done all around.
I also appreciate Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood for being so damn good.
bump!
I found a new anime called Darker Than Black which so far is an action/thriller/mystery. And it's really awesome. Really. Awesome.
okay :)English dub is better than the sub
Damn it! I got the english dub for Cowboy Bebop... is it possible to get the japanese audiotrack or something?

I've tried watching Ghost in the Shell several time, because I've heard a lot of praise. Every time, I fell asleep in the middle of it. One day I'll give it a fair shot, but for now I'm going to check out other things.
Umineko is SO BAD. Why do I continue to watch it? I am 100% sure that the visual novel makes more sense than the anime, just because I played it for about 10 minutes and I've already learned a bunch of stuff that wasn't even mentioned in the anime. They didn't screw up Higurashi to the point of making no fucking sense, so why did it happen to Umineko? What the fuck is wrong with this show?
In other news: I've been watching Clannad and I just finished watching all of the Kara no Kyoukai movies. The fifth and seventh movies were the best by a lot (and the longest). The scene where Lio is like drooling all over Shiki for some reason takes my prize for creepiest thing I've ever seen in an anime. I highly recommend KnK to ANYONE. It's really great, written by Kinoko Nasu if you know who that is, and it's just so friggin awesome.
Also, Faemir: How's F/SN going, if you started it? :p

Stand Alone Complex never really grabbed me enough to watch the whole series, but it is a decent show to watch every once in a while on adult swim.
Hamtaro:metal :metal :metal :metal
Well, I just watched the first episode of Baccano! and already: Faemir I'm sorry for not listening to you earlier this is awesome.
This may seem familiar, but make sure you watch it to the end :p
Watched the entirety of Geass and R2 between Sunday and tonight, just finished it. Jeremiah and Mao were such great characters for being so minor.
Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin)
AMIRITE?!
Ghost in the Shell is streaming on Netflix. This will be my first exposure to it. My only question is: will I came?

The film? I enjoyed it certainly, though i've seen far better, not to mention the series being better than the movie.
I just restarted Ergo Proxy:tup :tup
FMA BrotherhoodAside from the fact that it definitely does follow the source material much closer than the original show, after seeing a couple of episodes of Brotherhood, I can easily say I prefer the original anime.

And while I think for the most part you might be correct, I think one of the primary reasons I prefer the original is that Brotherhood (at least right now) seems so much more...cartoonish or light hearted. Maybe that's just how it is right now, but it really bothered me.Aside from the fact that it definitely does follow the source material much closer than the original show, after seeing a couple of episodes of Brotherhood, I can easily say I prefer the original anime.
I keep hearing this, and all I can say is fail. Of course you like the original better from the first few episodes, since it's the same material (but compressed in Brotherhood). You have to wait until it starts getting different. I guarantee you that everyone says the exact same thing. Everyone.
*First few episodes* Meh, this is alright. I definitely prefer the original
*Where it first starts to branch out* Well, this is pretty cool. Still prefer the original
*At some point down the line* I WAS A HEATHEN DOG

getting all 14 eps now :D
I still haven't seen Wolf's Rain. :-\
I suggest getting the box set of the show you've seen least recently. That way you can sit down and watch it all again while you wait for more money.
Cowboy Bebop.
I started watching Bakemonogatari. I really hope someone gets episode 13 and 14 subbed before I get there, and that 15 comes out short after that. Unfortunately as far as I can tell all the groups doing it are slooooooooow. The only reasonably fast group doing it was gg and they pretty much died.
Anyways.
What the fuck is with this show?
Well as long as it makes a bit more sense than FLCL I think I'll be OK. I still don't understand FLCL but I like it a lot.
Hows Durarara!! coming along? Still watching it?
Just watched Neon Genesis Evangelion again and...the best them
:hefdaddy
I just watched Evangelion 2.22.
WHAT
JUST
HAPPENED?!
So far I've only seen the first Eva Rebuild film. Being a huge fan of the original series, I can say for character developement and story telling purposes, these films do WAY more justice to the series than the actual series itself.
Needless to say, I can't wait to indulge myself in the other films.
Man, I recently watched "School Days", and that's one fucked up ending :metal
HEY GUYS FULLMETAL THE MANGA FINISHED OMGOMGOMGOMG YOU'RE IN FOR A TREAT WITH THE ANIME WOOOO
*snippity*Really? Really?!
Anyone seen the new Highschool of the Dead series? I've been wanting to check it out seeing as how I used to be a giant zombie movie nerd, but the insane amount of fanservice leads me to believe it would get in the way of the actual story.
God damnit Evangelion 3.0 was supposed to be out by now.:sadpanda:
I am downloading Elfen Lied as I type this. There are only 13 episodes, right?Evangelion. DO IT.
This will be my fourth anime series I've ever experienced, the others being Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Ghost in the Shell.
I really need to attempt Ghost in the Shell again, because I think I was distracted my first time with it. I didn't think much of it.

Now we're watching Ouran Host Club, or whatever its called. I like it alot so far.
I've only seen the first three episodes, and there's something uncomfortable about how close it gets to becoming hentai at times :lol
So I'm guessing the whole cousins thing must not hold much of a stigma in Japan?
The puppy scene is probably one of the most horrific things I have ever on film.>I have ever on film
That looks like it's universally held as a good'n. Sure.

This is why Highschool of the Dead is either the best anime ever or the worst anime ever, depending on your definition of "good".
It's an anime. The same way Totally Spies is an anime.
Every time I watch Elfen Lied I end up depressed for like a week.
BUT I STILL LOVE IT
Am I a douche because I watch animu with English audio tracks and no subtitles?
I really should start watching Ouran in Japanese. I want the rest of the story, but the thing is I started watching it in English first. So those are the voices I'm used to. Ah well, I guess beggars can't be choosers.
A good dose of Cowboy Bebop will cure any anime prejudice.
He is completely convinced that every anime ever (except Pokémon) is weird and hentai-ish and no good at all.

Japanese is much better. DO IT.
Also, excellent taste. :heart
The English dubs of Death Note, FMA, and Cowboy Bebop are stellar, IMO. Every other English dubbed anime in existence seems to have at least one voice that ruins everything.Agreed on all counts!

The dubs of Cowboy Bebop and DBZ are the only ones I can watch, although they do manage to be better then the Japanese versions. Japanese Goku is fucking annoying.

Ugh, the guys sound too feminine and the girls sound too annoying - Japanese FTW!
I prefer watching it in Japanese, but those versions aren't always perfect either.
Yeah, you're right. :lolI prefer watching it in Japanese, but those versions aren't always perfect either.
They're not, but the great thing about listening to someone in another language is you can't tell if they pause awkwardly or are a terrible actor.
I downloaded all of Ouran in Japanese with English subs. It's so much better than the dubbed version. So many jokes make absolutely no sense in English. I'm in love with this anime.
I finished Hellsing yesterday. It was brilliant. ALUCARD :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart
What are some funny animes that aren't lame or overly cutesy, but not really action/fighting based either?
We liked Ouran High School Host Club and now we're watching School Rumble. Any other suggestions?

Also, I JUST finished watching the first episode of Death Note after hearing everyone rant about it and so on.
I can see that I'm going to love this show.
I need to pick up NGE again over the break. I don't think I've even at the 8th episode yet.

I don't think I have ever met a Deathnote fan who preferred Near to L. Fucking Near.
Now seriously, watch Code Geass, because it's like Death Note but with mechs and ALL HAIL BRITANNIAAAAA!
I have to agree here, Volk. After that moment, Death Note took a bit of a dive. The last three, four episodes are all awesome, though (especially the last).
Also, I think Fullmetal Alchemist - Brotherhood might be my favourite Anime so far. Seriously, it has everything that a good anime needs imo: Great plot, great characters and a nice balance between serious and those classic humourous elements. I don't even feel like watching other Anime right now, since I'm in doubt whether I could enjoy them as much as I did with FMA.
I thought so, but I wasn't sure. I know Victoria is in the sun a couple of times, but I never noticed whether Alucard was or not. Is he some time?I just had an argument with my sister over whether Alucard or Edward was better. I won. :D

FMA is my second favourite, but Baccano! is my favourite, by quite a way.
Just checking in to say I'm more than halfway finished with Code Geass. Through all my time watching the series, I have managed to retain one memorable moment that will haunt me everywhere I go. It can be described in two words:
Table Masturbation
Gonna watch "Hetalia: Axis Powers" as soon as I can.
EDIT: Also want to watch "Otome Youkai Zakuro"
These are suggestions from my friend :p
You don't like Zakuro? I'm watching the first episode right now and i love it. Hetalia is sorta funny, I found the manga way funnier than the show, but I hope you know a lot about history and international relations if you intend to understand Hetalia.
Zakuro...I couldn't get through the first episode. It was PAINFUL.

I already said that before, but it doesn't matter to me right now.
Zomg Death Note :heart
I totally agree though, it went majorly downhill after the um... "event"...
Watch it, it's really good.
At a friend's recommendation I started watch Ouran. Can't go wrong with Maaya Sakamoto and Mamoru Miyano.

Bump
I just watched Perfect Blue (by the same director that did Paprika).
I was kind of hesitant because I didn't really care for Paprika,:|
but Perfect Blue was amazing.:tup
My favorite scene in Perfect Blue is when the elevator comes down with the radio in it, playing the song by the pop group. Creepy as fuck.
So I finished watching Kara No Kyoukai the other day. It was pretty good, but the end was very meh. My least favourite of the anime I've watched so far, I'm afraid.
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is one of the best shows I've seen in a while.
I haven't finished it since I was watching the dubbed version. How good is the subbed version of it, are the voices pretty different?Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is one of the best shows I've seen in a while.

Just found this thread. I'm starting to get into anime again after a year of not watching any. I'm personally a fan of the less serious animes. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, and Azumanga Daioh are some favourites of the non serious ones.
I watched all of the original FMA dubbed, and the first 20 or so episodes of Brotherhood dubbed as well. Then I got tired of waiting for them to finish the dub, and watched the rest subbed. Took a little while to get over the transition, but the sub is just as enjoyable I think (even though the dub is fantastic, imo).

Watched a few episodes of FMA since I always hear people talking about it. Tbh, I dont see why so far. Its definately solid, but I see nothing special or really outstanding about it so far.

Are you watching the original series or the good one? :neverusethis:
Get to Brotherhood as soon as you can.
So I finished watching Umineko No Naku Koro Ni today. The concept is awesome (I'm sure that I'm not the only one being reminded of Phoenix Wright from Ace Attorney when Battler kept shouting his arguments and "blue truths" at Beatrice), I loved the second and the third part and especially the last four episodes.
However, never have I seen any TV show that had such potential getting borderline ruined by one single character. Seriously, those antics Maria Ushiromiya had made many episodes almost unbearable. If she had a personality that was blander, but more tolerable, this series would have been one of my favourites. But the way it is... shame, really.
Rewatching the first FMA series again. Oh high school nostalgia. I don't know what it is about the Brotherhood English dub, but the voices are just slightly off from the way I remember them from the original series. Also I might have been too used to the subbed version on hulu. Ah well. Happy to watch these all again.
*shrug*
I think NGE is the prime example of what a bad dub can do to an anime, Elfen Lied is another example. On the other side, if you want to see what a really good dub can do for an anime, check out the Baccano! dub. Top tier.
I'm with Chris, most series I've seen aren't filled with atrocious voice acting, there's usually just one person that makes me want to rip out my ears and that's it (Nunalee from Code Geass, I'm looking at you). But the rest of cast is good enough that I don't notice.
In fact, one of the things I'm already liking about Baccano, despite only watching one episode, is that all the voices have been good so far.
I think more than just plain bad voice acting, what annoys me most in dubbed anime is that there is apparently only a dozen english voice actors in the world that you hear in

THE FATE OF MY OPINION OF THIS SHOW RESTS IN THE HANDS OF THIS FILM
I love how the movie and the TV ending can pretty much go hand in hand. My appreciation of the TV ending really jumped after watching the movie, then watching the TV end.I agree with this. I hated the TV ending when I first saw it, but after watching End of Eva.... I hate it less now.
Alright, so [SPOILERS??]Shinji did not restore the world to the way it was, but he made it so that individual souls could exist again eventually? Not sure what exactly was accomplished in all of it[/SPOILERS]
So I finished Baccano! yesterday. It was pretty good. Agree that the voice acting was pretty strong. Going to see if Durarara!! is on Netflix based on Genowyn's compliments towards the dub.

Alright, I'm ready for another anime, but I'd like to mix it up and have something that doesn't involve huge mechanoid things. But it still has to be good. And it would help if it was a series with a beginning and end (which I assume almost all anime are) also, it can be humorous or action packed or whatever,
I just NEED!
IT!
TO BE!
GOOD!
Regarding Eva:
The whole time loop idea is something pretty unique to just RoE. For NGE, it was never intended to have any time loop or any of that. EoE is when Shinji rejects instrumentality, and accepts life for what it is. I think in RoE they added all the time loop stuff to keep long time fans interested in the movies.
I guess I don't exactly insist on dubs. Just give me something good, I'm sure subtitles wouldn't bother me.

Go watch Baccano. Has comedy, action, and a pretty intersting story/storyline. Its fun keeping track of what episode youre watching
I really hope they hurry up with 3.0, it was supposed to be out last summer. I wonder if they still plan on releasing 3.0 and 4.0 at the same time.Regarding Eva:

Well yeah, I meant "Now that RoE is part of it". I think even without that aspect, RoE is worth seeing. That scene with Unit 04 in the second film...*shiver*
Hey Genowyn, is there any anime on Netflix instant watch that you'd recommend?
I just skimmed through your anime list, Genowyn, and noticed that (Requiem For The) Phantom is missing. Haven't you seen it yet? If so, I'd like to recommend it to you (if you have time to watch it anytime soon).
I just realized I have an unhealthy love for L from Death Note. :heartThis, only I didn't just realize it.

Fixed
So I just finished episode 7 of Gurren Lagann. Wow did that series take an unexpected turn.
...and now I'm on episode 18. In like a day. Damn its been better than I was expecting so far. Though any sort of practicality concerning Gurren Lagann's weaponry is constantly thrown out the window :lol
I just realized I have an unhealthy love for L from Death Note. :heart
Gurren Lagann is like Dragonball Z, only with giant mechs, copious amounts of crack, and it has the good sense to end and not bring all the dead characters back to life. And its good. Genowyn, what did you mean about Gainax deconstructing giant mecha anime?

GENOWYN (and other anime nerds)
After watching all of Mushishi and Death Note(again) I need another anime recommendation from Netflix Instant Watch. HALP!
Ao no Exorcist is amazing. There are only four or five episodes that have been aired so far, but I really like the setup of this anime. Looks very promising, I wonder where it is going.
i was just thinking about this and the thing that kind of bothered me about NGE was that the green-eyed, red-haired, white and strait from Germany girl was still named Asuka Soryu.Japanese mother or father i can't remember
Ao no Exorcist
C
Deadman Wonderland
Hidan no Aria
Steins;Gate
All of them are awesome in their own way.
I recommend using UTW instead of GG then. GG is notorious for their trollsubs (like the Vagina Bones line in Yumekui Merry). Obviously, if they really like a show they will sub it properly, but Hidan no Aria is just so cliched and ridiculous (IMO) that the only things that make it interesting are comedy subs with great lines like "Don't you know? French people can't into H!"
Just saw an interesting preview on Comcast On-Demand for some flick called Summer Wars. Anyone here familiar with it?
alright i tried baccano on Netflix and the dubs were actually the worst I've heard, meaning that I actually took note of their badness. not exactly my thing. not artsy fartsy enough I guess
Yuruyuri: Funny. If you like slice of life shows (like Azumanga Daioh, K-on!, or Lucky Star) you will probably like it. Recommend.

lol is this some kind of yuri anime?
I don't watch yaoi.......so, i'm going to have to pass on that one :lolYuruyuri: Funny. If you like slice of life shows (like Azumanga Daioh, K-on!, or Lucky Star) you will probably like it. Recommend.
lol is this some kind of yuri anime?
Not really...outside of the now common pervy lesbian girl (thanks probably to Index/Railgun). Although this show does have TWO of those, so who knows.
Anyway:
No. 6: I went into this show thinking it was a sci-fi but ended up with a main character who had a girl's name wearing a purple sweater, and I thought, "This is a gay show, isn't it? This guy is the uke." Then another guy breaks into the guy's house and tries to strangle him and then starts living with him, I was like "And here is our seme..." By the end of the episode our protagonists are lying on a bed holding hands, and I knew this was definitely a yaoi show. My verdict for now is...if you're into yaoi, watch it. If you are immensely homophobic, don't. If you're neither...wait a few more episodes so I can find out if it has any non-gay substance to it :lol
Watched a few series just recently on Netflix. The first two I checked out after hearing about them in this thread.
Baccano! - Really liked this, like mentioned before the dub is great. Non-linear storytelling can be amazing when done properly, and I think they nailed it here with the 3 storylines. Obviously confusing at first, but really satisfying when everything gets going and you know whats up. However I felt it ended rather abruptly (this could be because I watched the whole last half of the series in one sitting though), and left me wanting more. Still, I would recommend it to anyone else looking for a good short series to watch.
But the manga is totally better than the anime in my opinion.
But the manga is totally better than the anime in my opinion.
I think you would be hard pressed to find one where that wasn't true.
So as indicated by my avatar and signature, I think Mawaru Penguindrum is awesome and noone has any excuse not to be watching it because it is great.

SEIZON SENRYAKU!!
I HOPE Persona 4 turns out good. The game was nearly perfect, so I have pretty high expectations for the anime.
At least the music will be good! Shoji Meguro :heart
As long as it's better than Trinity Soul
Nothing much new in the world of manga/anime for me. I've been getting into Deadman Wonderland lately, I'm now caught up in the manga and finished watching Season 1 of the anime. Which I hope gets picked back up sometime in the near future, but I fear for its survival due to the cannon material they've left out, especially regarding a certain woman. Gantz is still number one in my list of favorites, though lately it's been lacking a bit. Ao no Exorcist is pretty cool, nothing jaw-dropping but its entertaining. That's another series that's suffering a little in the anime category, which is really sad because when its cannon material and they're at the top of their game, its one of my favorites.
I think that's about it... I've been craving a new manga and/or anime series recently but I'm very picky in what I like when it comes to genres. I really love the more brutal series that focus on character relationships. Obviously Gantz would be one of those series, Battle Royale is also pretty cool but I despise the sequels created; I couldn't get past the first couple chapters. Oh, an older series I got back into is Bokurano. Very touching, very brutal, but it's not just for the sake of being brutal; it paints a very real picture of human relationships between adolescents and their choices.
Rereading all that, it's so jumbled. :lol Whatevs, stream on conscience. Good song.

I'm really enjoying the Deadman Wonderland manga. I'm actually really disappointed with the anime. I thought it was fine until I picked up a few issues of the manga and then I realized how much bettter the manga actually is. Kinda disappointing.I think that's about it... PUELLA MAGI MADOKA MAGICA. Basically like Evangelion but for magical girls instead of mecha. So fucking good.
Also, as I have said like a million times since it started airing, Mawaru Penguindrum is freaking awesome and any anime fan who is not keeping up with Penguindrum is in the wrong.
I meant hit as in popularity :lol
Index is seriously awesome. Misaka is still in it, though as more of a side-heroine than as the main character. She's still pretty central but she's much more interesting. She's got a pretty major conflict going on (the Sisters, which are never really brought up in Railgun) plus the only charming thing she has about her is the tsundere thing she has going on with Touma.
Also anyone who isn't planning to watch Fate/Zero should really reevaluate their life.

I've begun watching CCS. Don't laugh at me.

I was going to laugh at you, but then I remembered that I watch a cartoon about magical ponies.
Nah, I am just messing with you. I watch girly anime all the time :lolI've begun watching CCS. Don't laugh at me.

I tried watching an episode today actually. I'm not gonna bag on anyone for being a brony and if it's your thang it's your thang, but it didn't really catch my interest.
I don't care what anyone says: CCS may be childish, it may be girly, but those characters really come off the screen for me. Or maybe CLAMP is just generally good at writing likable characters, because the only other cast I enjoy this much is the one for Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle.

Anyone here watch The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzuyima?
Oh hey btw, how essential are the light novels and manga to enjoying/understanding the plot/characters of Haruhi Suzuyima?
I am, and good God is it hard to manage. It's like one YouTuber will have it in DVD sequence, then another one has it NO order...nobody has it in the Haruhi order.
Dear God...the Endless Eight... :|
And wouldn't ya know it? They're not even gonna do a third season. :sadpanda:
I'm currently about halfway through Disappearance. If not for finals week (and Endless Eight) I'd probably have muscled through the entire series in a day. :p
Edit: The only news about Haruhi on the 'net seemingly comes from this link: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-11-29/j-cast/kadokawa-has-no-plans-for-3rd-haruhi-tv-season
The second season killed my enthusiasm for the series. I have yet to see the movie

The movie is, imo, the greatest animated film ever made.
Just to give you an idea.
NEW SEASON IS UNDERWAAAYYYYAAYYYYY
So,
I've seen 6 of the new shows so far, they are:
Recorder to Randoseru
Kill Me Baby
Nisemonogatari
Mouretsu Pirates
Rinne no Lagrange
Senki Zesshou Symphogear
I've actually been pretty impressed with all of them so far. I'm gonna go ahead and give a recommendation for all of these shows except Lagrange. I need to give it a few more episodes to see if it's really worth checking out. The recommendation for Nisemonogatari is double if you watched Bakemonogatari and enjoyed it...if you haven't, get on it and watch Bakemonogatari and then watch Nisemonogatari when you're done.
Anyone else think my new avatar is kinda creepy? :lol
I've fallen in love with a harem series. Am I a bad person?
Not to mention it's the most fan-servicey franchise I have ever seen, film, book or TV.
I read Deadman Wonderland and Berserk. There's also a short series called Seven Billion Needles which I enjoy.
So the Rosario manga is about a hundred times better than the anime. Looking back I have no idea why I fell in love with that ecchi humor, the obvious aside. There's actually a story and I'm hooked.
Y'know maybe it's just me but I always thought that removing the singing girl who pees herself from the Elfen Lied anime was a big improvement.
If you feel that way about anime maybe you should try watching some of the ones I've suggested in this thread :p
:lol Good luck, Volk. Your thought is the same as mine was when I started watching it. I finished the first season but didn't bother with the second. It was flashy, it was cool, the animation/voice acting/music (especially) were all outstanding; but without characters I give two shits about or a concrete storyline aside from any shallow beginnings, it's all for naught. It wasn't a bad series, I was just disappointed with the end result. Good show if you're not into any other series at the moment or a rainy day.
YESSSSSSSSSSS
It looks like there's a new Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop) anime airing in the spring called "Sakamichi no Apollon". It takes place in the 60's and it's about jazz and stuff.
Oh, and Yoko Kanno is doing the music.

I just watched 8th MS Team, Gundam Wing and G Gundam...
Its amazing how fucking juvenile these shows are 10-12 years later.
Are there animes with more adult themes, but incredibly violent? I don't mean like tits and fucking, I mean like...adult issues. Shit that feels like you need to be 18 and older to fucking relate with.

It does look pretty nice, except for the comically bad looking CGI.

The Pokemon anime in Japanese is so different from watching it in English.
Don't ask me why I decided to start watching it.
It never ceases to amaze me how how creepy Shaft can get. And while this particular scene was kind of funny, they have already wasted a lot of time on unnecessary fanservice.
It's a shame because I was really looking forward to Nisemonogatari.
Best episode of any anime ever, I can't wait to brush my teeth.
The sexy scenes are back with a hint of incest, what more could we ask for? Although I was thinking that it was going to be all Karen in this episode, at least we got to see the other one.
This episode was amazing, I wish to brush Karen's teeth.
That was by far the best Fanservice episode of the Monogatari Franchise..
OMG, i freakin loved each second of this episode.. Karen is hella hot, there is a chance that she can be as hot as Senjougahara.. im totally speechless and still debating with myself if i should put Karen as one of my favorite characters.
Oh my GOD the amount of incest in this episode djfhgbdfsjnhfxgkh.xfj
But seriously fuck the newer Pokemon. They suck dick, they're boring and bland and if I lived in a world of loser Pokemon like that, I'd become the President of Team Rocket and butt fuck every single Pokemon alive; then I'd farm them for their precious body parts.

Ah, poor awkward Kaoru-kun. Sakamichi no Apollon is such a blast.
A-Kon was awesome and a lot of fun. We experienced so much over three days. If I were to talk about everything we did and saw it would take forever and would be TL;DR....
...so I'll just say that at one point, a single person in a room with at least 500 people randomly yelled as loud as he could "I WANNA BE, THE VERY BEST!"
By the fourth line of the song, the entire room was singing it in unison. I'm talking every single person on the ground floor of the hotel was singing the Pokemon theme song together. It was so goddamn beautiful, I almost cried. I think I would have if my friends weren't right next to me. It was such an awesome feeling of being around like-minded people, in an environment that encouraged everyone to be themselves without fear of ridicule.

I gotta say, it's almost misleading that the second season of Clannad is called "After Story." As far as I'm concerned, the second season is when the story truly begins.
On a more serious note, small revelation I had today about Clannad: the reason it excels at evoking such emotional response from the fanbase is not so much due to how well-written the tearjerker moments are, but because of how it excels at placing the viewer in Tomoya's shoes, such that it really does feel like his life is my life. His tragedies feel like the viewer's tragedies.

Part of that comes from the fact that it was originally written as a game played from Okazaki's POV.
I didn't like how the 2nd half of the show focused more on romance instead of music. But, it was still an enjoyable show and it gets a 7/10 from me.
Fate/Zero's second half is still the show of the year.

I finished Tsuritama yesterday. The ending is so perfect and sums everything up fantastically; what a beautifully crafted and lovely little series. I usually don't go for the shorter series but this is one exception I'm happy to have watched; 12 episodes isn't a lot to have a grandiose story but they did that and more. It starts out as a slice of life 'fishing anime' and ends up something entirely different but still keeps the humor and laid back approach of its origin. Really great series, highly recommended.Yeah, I've heared a lot of good things about Tsuritama. I will definitely start it soon now that it ended.
Too much melodrama. It was hard to take their relationships seriously with all the crying and whining.
Also, I thought the show could of used more episodes to develop the characters more. Adapting 9 volumes of a manga into a 12 episode series made everything seemed rushed.
Problems aside, 7/10 is a great score! Most anime wish they were that good!
I'm ready for Gen Urobuchi to crush my soul once again!
Autumn looks alright so far. I guess I'll check out:
Magi
Robotics;Notes
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (I have to see the others first)
Little Busters (not expecting much)
For those seeking slice-of-life, seems like this is gonna be a bit of a drought. I guess Sukitte ii Na Yo sounds okay.

Little Busters! is one of my favorite visual novels, so I think it should be good. I'm a little worried that JC Staff is handling it, but they have done some good stuff (Raildex mostly).
Have you played it?
Only one I've seen out of those is School Days, and I only watched it for the NICE BOAT :lol
Hurry, somebody tell me what I should watch from this upcoming season.Shinsekai yori and Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun seem to be the standouts so far.

I could recommend so many things, but it might help to have an idea of what you've seen/enjoyed.
New blog post featuring Sakamichi no Apollon (among others), if anyone is interested.
By the way, anyone got the inside scoop on what's good this season?
Little Busters!
Robotics;Notes
Psycho-pass
Seems like you go in for some of the darker stuff so I will recommend:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Episode 3, when the show says "By the way you knew I was written by Urobuchi Gen, right? This is going to be fucked up and sad." :lol
I saw an episode of Senran Kagura. It was pretty redonk (in a bad way).
I do, I actually posted in this thread a while ago...but I haven't updated it in a long, long time :lol
Either way: https://myanimelist.net/profile/genowyn
Might get around to updating it in the morning...
Cool shit, friended! I'm amazed by how much more anime/manga you, Genowyn, and others have read compared to me. Even taking into account stuff I plan to watch, I'm nowhere near you.
I really like Index, not thrilled about Railgun though. Looking forward to the new movie. Have you seen the subbed PV? https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=NV7295rnrHs
edit: arararararaararagi doubleposts like it ain't no thing
I don't either; I liked it just fine in chronological order. Anyway I dunno, it is rather odd as a whole, so I can get not getting into it. Although in the grand scheme of things, pretty normal as anime goes...
Man, I haven't even broken into that stuff. If you read through the thread you can see I'm mostly a slice-of-life kinda guy, about as ordinary as anime gets. I never really got into Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, etc. About the weirdest I've ever gone is Rosario to Vampire and Senran Kagura, which were both terrible. :lolCowboy Bebop is pretty far from being 'weird.' It's pretty tame in terms of anime actually. :)
Edit: I should also mention the Haruhi movie is about a hundred times better than the series itself.
Amazon, I assume?
come on man how long have i been suggesting steins;gate
seriously
it's like you don't think i know what all the good shit is
come on
watch steins;gate already you're missing out
I don't think I've ever seen a 100% dead serious anime. Even the really dark stuff has funny bits.
Is anyone able to give me the lowdown on Bakemonogatari?
The last one, I forget what it's called but it's about a demon lord who gets transported to earth and becomes a human, so he has to start working at not-McDonalds.
I can see that. There seems to be no plot at all. I was surprised when they spent 5 minutes in the first episode talking about how they eat food.
But after seeing a few more, that's what this series is about.
Just finished Steins;Gate and starting the OVA now. What the hell was I waiting for? That was beautiful.
So hey how about that Madoka anyone watch that yet or am I gonna be waiting another few months for someone to come in here and be like "I saw this show Madoka and it was great" and I'll be like "YEAH I TOLD YOU GUYS THAT"
Seeing Akira in a movie theater not once, but TWICE.
Seeing Akira in a movie theater not once, but TWICE.
I would've loved to see it when it first came out in theaters here. That was the first anime that really had me hooked (and is arguably my favorite anime film). I was excited when I was in Tokyo in 2001 when I got a ticket to see the re-release in theaters during the Film Festival. But then I had to sit through the second Armitage movie beforehand (didn't like it).

Oh, back then, seeing Akira in a movie theater, even with the less than passable Streamline dub, was like a religious experience for an anime fan. Anime on a freaking movie screen, man. I can't understand how awesome that was back then. Akira was also one of the first affordable anime videos to come out on VHS too, so it was pretty memorable for that as well. That first time was an amazing experience, and seeing it AGAIN was pretty damn cool too.
Gawd DAYUM! Dat Titan. Eren is a fucking behemoth. I love this anime.:metal Every scene with that Titan was gold.
I am really interested in Utena but I've never watched it. I know the same Director made Mawaru Penguindrum, which I loved, and the same writer wrote on FLCL, NGE, Ouran, and Star Driver.
Anyone here watch Psycho-Pass?
It's on my "to watch sometime in the future" list. Is it good?
Finished Future Diary and started Haruhi. I'm confused when it comes to broadcast vs. chronological order. I'm watching the original 14 episodes (I guess it's considered season 1). Then when season two came out, they aired both seasons mixed up? I"m on episode 10 of the 14 atm.
I'm caught up with the manga now; I just couldn't wait for the anime team to get to the point after that useless fucking recap episode... The worst thing about being an anime fan is having to put up with the occasional filler (or a shit-ton if you're into shonen...) even from amazing teams like Titan's. Eh, it's not a big deal but it was really not needed in the slightest this early (or at all...seriously, who picks up an anime in the middle and says "oh screw watching the episodes, they've got this nice recap episode just for me!"). The manga is fan-fucking-tastic, but I can completely see the anime bettering many parts of it. I can't wait to see how they fuck it up....*crosses fingers for an anime to begin AND end good for once*I decided not to read the manga until the anime ends. I might cave though.
Try True Tears.Okay.
Just wanted to say that Gurren Lagann is an absolutely amazing show.
So I started watching True Tears. I'm six episodes in, and I'm liking it so far. The first episode took a while to reel me in, but once the characters were all in place, it clicked, and got good pretty quickly.
Also, that reveal at the end of episode 6; Bam! I predicted it I think somewhere during episode 4, but I think they intentionally set it up that way. The build up to that moment was really well done.
Great recommendation SD.

Ohhh don't thank me just yet. ::)
BTW, I started and finished the series about two months ago...let's just say you should be prepared to have the Aburamushi song stuck in your head for all eternity.
I got interested enough in Attack on Titan that I read through the manga so far. I was amazed at how similar the anime is to it. Sometimes the manga is less chronological in its story telling (the whole military training section being a flashback is a good example). Other than that, every scene is line-for-line, angle-for-angle the same. It's as if they used the manga for storyboarding the anime. So if you have been debating checking out the manga, you aren't missing anything; unless you just want to read ahead.I'm so glad I've been able to avoid major spoilers for this show.
I will say, though. I was expecting the identities of the human titans to be the big twist of the series, even though their identities were kind of obvious, but there are way bigger surprises in the future. I am so glad for that.
So I'm saving most of my reactions for when I finish the whole thing.
One quick reaction in the meantime though for how things are going for Noe by the end of episode 10. I'll let Mr. Charles Brown sum it up for me;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq9JaTp7pFo
So I finished it.
Overall, I thought it was pretty good. Not the ending I was hoping for, but they handled it pretty well anyway. Honestly, until the last five minutes or so of the last episode, I thought they were going the other way with it.
I also definitely see why they basically un-did one of the big reveals from earlier. If he only chooses something because every other possibility is off the table, the choice is pretty meaningless.
Also, man, those last four or five episodes were just relentless when it came to Noe. That stuff with her brother, some of those scenes by the shore, the tree; just, damn. Still, while things didn't end quite how I were hoping they would for her, and it certainly isn't all smooth sailing ahead for her, they did give the sense that she'll ultimately be okay.
So yeah, overall, good recommendation. I'm glad I watched it.
My opinion of it was much lower when I finished, until the moment where I finally "got" it. And my interpretation was a little different from yours. It's as follows:(Was going to reply sooner but I was down in the States for a few days without internet).
See, his thing with Hiromi is she's the one whose tears he wants to wipe away. That's all pretty and romantic, but isn't exactly a solid basis for a relationship. What's key and is the strong basis for a relationship is the one who, as his father says, "makes your heart quiver." Noe is the one who makes his heart quiver. He doesn't know it and inevitably will fail to make the connection, but that is a sign of who really is the one for him.
And that's precisely the point: he chose wrong, and he won't know it until it's too late. Most of us have that "Noe" in our lives and for most of us it's just a bittersweet memory or regret we once weren't able to fathom - she wasn't the one who got away, but the one we decided to let go. I made a similar mistake once, so I do kind of sympathize with Shin (lucky I decided not to make the same mistake twice and ended up with my current girlfriend).
You see this unfold and know it will probably turn out to be a great regret; Shin and Hiromi will wind up exactly like Shin's parents - everyone pretty much knows that. The point is not to chase the girls whose tears you want to wipe away, but those who make your heart quiver. He made the wrong decision, and this is for those of us who realized too late. Happily I can say I quickly mended that mistake in my own life, but I think this anime series as a whole is a cautionary tale in that way.
Any other recommendations?

ATTACK ON TITAN
That was an awesome AoT episode. And for those who've read the manga, I think I know exactly where the end to this run of the show is going to be. It'll be a cliffhanger right at the reveal of the biggest twist of the story so far. People are going to freak. I am excited.I'm going to die waiting for season 2.
So Watamote is the funniest/cringiest thing ever.I actually just came in here because of Watamote. Just finished watching through it on a recommendation. Great show.
And to the people who read/watched Attack on Titan, have you ever gone back and reread it, it's crazy all the foreshadowing they do.
There is indeed a good amount of foreshadowing in the manga, I started noticing it pretty early on but figured I was just over analyzing things till...*that moment*. For some reason, I haven't noticed it in the anime, and I have yet to do my usual 'compare manga/anime side by side' spiel that always happens once a series (hopefully just 'season' for AoT) ends. I've been too caught up in all the awesome animation.
Watamote is amazing and it's probably my next obsession, I love that crazy little chick. I'm only on ep4 but it's got me good.
Just watched the Titan finale. Holy shitballs, time to read the manga :lolDid you watch the after credits?
Of course, hence the shitballs :biggrin:Just watched the Titan finale. Holy shitballs, time to read the manga :lolDid you watch the after credits?
For all the other fans of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: check out the new anime series, Kill La Kill! It's made by the same people who made TTGL! The first episode just aired today and I loved it! :tupIt was... special :lol I enjoyed it however so I'll probably keep watching.

I haven't watched Gurren Lagann yet, is it similar to this?
For all the other fans of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: check out the new anime series, Kill La Kill! It's made by the same people who made TTGL! The first episode just aired today and I loved it! :tupReally cool show so far. Definitely reminds me of the newer generation Gainax shows. I can't wait to see where this is heading to.
I haven't watched Gurren Lagann yetDefinitely get on that.
i'm pumped for Fate Stay Night remake by Ufotable now :tupAwesome, tried watching that after seeing Fate/Zero and I could not manage it.
I've not seen a whole lot of Anime but I'll list the ones i've seen :Please watch Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Akira.
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
The Ghost In the Shell.
Roujin Z
Lensman
Can't remember any more than that...
[ Dunno if it counts but i've also seen Advent Children ].
Akira.
Spirited Away
Also :*exceptions for Cowboy Bebop, DBZ, and FMA.
SUBTITLES.
I *never* ever watch an anime which has been dubbed. It's just awful.

And Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann! :biggrin:Gurren Lagann is the best post-Evangelion recovery you could get; maybe supplement it with FLCL.
picsGood, but the only way to complete it would to have the best girl, Sasha, coupled with a potato.
I've been watching Clannad, since I've heard a lot about it.I hope your soul is ready
The Steins;Gate movie was great. Just great. As a result, I'm rewatching the entire series.
Steins;Gate is SO good. Proably top 3 or at least top 5 for me (if you couldn't tell from my avatar). Not that I've seen THAT much.
I'll have to watch that sometime. I keep hearing great things about it. Maybe after Kill la Kill is done.
I actually haven't check out Steins:Gate yet... and I don't think Crunchyroll has it so I'm gonna have a hard time getting it (er...legally...and with a good quality format).
I actually haven't check out Steins:Gate yet... and I don't think Crunchyroll has it so I'm gonna have a hard time getting it (er...legally...and with a good quality format). I'm in the process of doing some maintenance to my PC so I'm without a Blu-ray/DVD player at the moment, at least for the next few weeks, so I'm thinking I'll have Attack on Titan finished within that time and hopefully will get a player before then. But yeah I'm really interested in that one and have heard nothing but great things. I don't wanna bombard her though, she's new to the whole scene and is just now getting into the manga culture, and with a new anime, I'm hoping to ease her into it without going all fanboy on her. :lol
Godno, i am saying i would choose an anime that focus more in story and characters instead of action or shock value.

Right, so, Elfen Lied?
Maybe if you were familiar with Elfen Lied beyond the very violent first scene, you'd know that it is in fact a compelling, disturbing, depressing, and a bit heartwarming psychological thriller, and that I am indeed being serious.
Oh man, tell us your reaction after episode 5! :corn

I pretty much fell in love when she showed me that she started reading my all-time favorite series, GANTZ, on her own and without my knowledge or fanboy-ish pushing. :lol
But I'm really loving Steins:Gate and I think she will too. Nice recommendation. :tup
So I hear there's an anime where Jesus Christ and the Buddha live together as roommates in Tokyo.
That's really all i need. I'm sold on it.
So...I read a yuri manga called Girl Friends. It was pretty much the most amazing manga I ever read. Has anyone else here read it?
Discuss.
Kill la Kill has been on fire the last few episodes. I wonder where they'll go from here.

:lol I've read it. It's okay. If you really want to see a great yuri series, you should watch Revolutionary Girl Utena. One of the best series I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Very intelligent series.
I'm still watching Kill la Kill on a weekly basis (LOVE this show), and I've decided to finally go ahead and watch Neon Genesis Evangelion for the first time ever. Been meaning to do that for awhile.
The ones I love are the ending themes to the first series of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, the first series of Chuunibyo and also the music in Shinsekai Yori. That first end theme is amazing.I went looking for this thread specifically because of Chunnibyo, so it's a pretty neat coincidence that the most recent post mentions it.
Oh, and naturally the full version of Raspberry Heaven (complete with all that fretless bass).
The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya
(Please don't hate me for the last one, it's truly terrible, but so good when drunk).I'll be sure to go in well prepared then. :P
And for the Endless Eight, you only really need to watch three of them to get it.
The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya
I want to see this, and started watching it. But then after reading about the series and learning about chronological/broadcast order, I wasn't sure how to proceed.
Ah damn, you were two away from <Oh damn I can't find how to do the spoiler thing>.
Guys, is there anything good this season that isn't Kill La Kill? I'm going to watch that eventually, but I'm in the mood for something non-actiony for right now.
standalone (COMPLEXES LOLLLLLLLLOOOOL).
Perfect Blue - Black Swan (Arronofsky also lifts a scene from Perfect Blue in Requiem for a Dream)
Recently I went and watched the entire Puella Magi Madoka Magica series in one sitting...holy f***ing s**t.
I was watching this with a friend of mine who suggested it to me and I was like skeptical at first and said to her "You really think I'd like this?" to which she replied "The image that is before you is misleading you" She wasn't kidding, I expected something light hearted and feel good, but instead I got something incredibly deep and emotional. Great series, although I'd probably need to watch it several more times to really appreciate it as much as those who've had. 9/10.
Sooooo everyone is watching Zankyou no Terror, right?Of course! Best anime of the season. :tup :corn
Right?
I just finished Revolutionary Girl Utena.
This was one of the most surreal series I have ever laid eyes upon. It was clear from quite early on that nothing was meant to be taken literally. There is symbolism in everything, and multiple events made me reinterpret my evaluations of them. Especially ep 33. Now THAT is how recap episodes should be done. The plot was difficult enough to figure out on an allegorical level, though I have a general idea of what happened. In particular, the ending was beautiful, when Utena realized that eternity is an illusion, that the pursuit of it will lead only to despair, and that one must focus on the present in order to find themselves and happiness. It will take several more viewings to uncover the layers of the symbolism, and I look forward to them. The only issue I had was with the episodic nature; most of the time, it seemed as though there was no progression in the story.
Overall, Utena was a beautiful work of art, and one of the best examples of anime I have ever seen. :hefdaddy Now, on to the movie!
I'm not sure I'd agree that Hunter is the best shounen anime/manga series, though. I think that honour belongs to Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood for the anime version of course).
In other news related to me being a big Type-Moon fan not only is Hollow Ataraxia out but the UFOTable anime adaptation of Unlimited Blade Works starts on the 28th! Kyaa~!

I always considered Evangelion to fit into the sci-fi/mecha genre--I never really saw it as shounen.
I started watching A Certain Scientific Railgun. I know it's a spinoff of Magical Index, should I watch that before I continue Railgun?
Mild SAO 2 spoilers:
Seriously Sinon you could have kicked him in the fucking balls ages ago what the fuck
Also just finished Zankyou no Terror. I have a question though:
Why exactly did Twelve think he needed to tell Five the truth at the Ferris Wheel...? As soon as he answered she shut the bomb off, and if he had just lied like "It's in our apartment" or something he would have had time to defuse it before Five could even verify the truth of what he said.
Myanimelist has a listed as starting on the 28th, that's usually the source I use.I always considered Evangelion to fit into the sci-fi/mecha genre--I never really saw it as shounen.
Shounen is the demographic, not the genre. So for example Gundam is certainly sci-fi/mecha but also certainly shounen. Don't conflate shounen and battle anime :lol.
Shounen has to do with more who it's marketed towards I guess? And NGE is certainly meant for the shounen demo. I have never met an NGE fan who got into it after they were like 16, most people seem to have watched it in the 12-14 range. Even though it seems wildly inappropriate for that age group, the fact is that's who will be able to best relate to the interpersonal issues that Shinji is going through throughout the series. After all NGE is really less about giant robots and more about girls...
Actually shounen is both a demographic and a genre, at least from my understanding. Shounen is generally an action/adventure-type series that is marketed towards boys and adolescents. Think DBZ, Naruto or Bleach for that.
Fate/Stay Night is Anime of the Season.
No.
Anime of the Year. Just sayin'. So watch it if you're not.
I'm not sure I'd agree that Hunter is the best shounen anime/manga series, though. I think that honour belongs to Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood for the anime version of course).
That may be true, but I have not watched it yet.
Fate is another one I'm interested in. Heard nothing but good things. I'm way too particular on my shows though, it's gotta grab me by my throat from episode one or I'm not even gonna give it the time of day.
So I watched Nichijou. Not sure how to describe it, but it was amazing.:tup
I've seen somewhere in the range of the first 20-30 episodes. I keep meaning to get back into it.
New season starts soon~
I'll have to take another look at the chart to see if there's anything besides Fate/Stay Night I'll want to see...
Would anyone be interested in making/reading top 25 anime lists? If so, should it be done in this thread or a new one?
(also if so I volunteer to go first :P)
I`m planning to buy Ghost in the Shell - SAC 1 next month, since it will be released on BD for the first time in Germany. Never watched anything out of the GitS universe, but I only heard good about it
(especially about SAC and the first movie) so I`ll give it a try. Next one on my list of unwatched anime still to watch is Cowboy Bebop (only watched the movie), but first things first.
Evangelion is one of those shows that gets better and better each time you see it. There are so many minor details and subleties, in terms of lore, plot, characterization, character development, and so on that make rewatching the series such a rewarding experience. It is also my all-time favorite show. :tup
I've been rewatching Neon Genesis Evangelion (Someone else on this page a few months ago did the exact same thing) over the past week or so. Since watching it for the first time a number of years ago it shot into my favourite show of all time category and watching it has been an experience. So many things I missed out on the first times around and so many new things to love. It's actually one of the biggest influences on how my life has gone, if I didn't get into it I would never have gotten into writing fan-fiction of it, which spurred me into writing for a gaming site I had for a number of years which helped lead to my current job in the Games industry, a lot to be thankful for to it. Also cosplaying Shinji is a lot of fun :)
After it I've picked up Gainax's first proper series, Nadia to watch. Really looking forward to seeing that one :)

Unfortuneately I haven`t watched this series; it`s really hard to get a DVD of it in Germany, but I watched the first movie of the Rebirth of Evangelion series in TV recently (the other two will be aired during the next weeks) and I have to admit that it was pretty great.
Watching Sword Art Online for the first time.
What a great show. I'm into it So much.
Honestly, I prefer the show with japanese. My friends' netflix has it that way. Yet, mine on my ps3 is in English. ???
Just started watching Future Diary, I'm on Episode 3 and I'm hooked. Has anyone finished it, does it have a satisfying ending? I'm not even sure if it's based on a manga.
edit: oops...sorry to double post. Tired as hell.
At the moment I'm watching Kill la Kill. Liking the show, and the ending theme is one of my favorite anime endings.
Kill la Kill is basically NGE with clothes instead of robots.
Also, speaking of anime, I just got back from the theater and saw Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F on the big screen. It was great.
Kill la Kill is basically NGE with clothes instead of robots.
Pretty much.

Just replace your religiously symbolic existential crises and mental breakdowns with incestuous lesbian rape.
I don't know about that; after all, Ragyo never brought her daughter and family dog together.
I don't really care for the DB franchise; I've tried to get into it on multiple occassions, but am always turned off within a few episodes. This movie is a perfect example of that. It contains just about every single one of my writing pet peeves, has so many jarring tonal juxtapositions that it is impossible to take seriously, and the dub is awful. It was, at best, average from an entertainment standpoint, and completely fails critically. Dragon Ball just is not for me.
So I watched Nichijou. Not sure how to describe it, but it was amazing.
One Punch Man is the best series going on right now. Just sayin'

The only reason OPM is not my least favorite new anime is because I watched a few really shitty series in my university's anime club.
You'd think at least based on animation standard alone it wouldn't be so low. :lol
I hope that I am wrong, but I predict that Erased will fall apart in its final quarter, if not before then.
Both the Shinsekai Yori anime and manga are adaptations of a novel (not an LN, but an actual novel).
Now, into Shinsekai Yori. I know it has supernatural elements but does it ever gets all weird like, say, Paranoia Agent? I'm asking because i hate that kind of anime.
We already are (at MAL) ;D
But don't worry, only Satoshi Kon i watched was Paranoia Agent.
The supernatural stuff is limited to PK, if I recall correctly. I haven't seen PA yet, so I'm not sure what you mean by 'weird'. If you are referring to an eccentric "mindfuck" type of show, then SSY is not weird. The story is somewhat complex, but not hard to follow. You won't have to analyze it to figure out what happens.
Well check out Paprika and Perfect Blue, and if you don't like those...
I'm still really enjoying Erased. I get the fear that the ball could be dropped but it's been so damn good so far.
Lucky you, afaik there are no showings in Canada. I saw the first two Rebuild of Evangelion films in a Theater so that was sweet.
Looking forward to next season... Diamond is Unbreakable, Danganronpa 3 (which should be better than the original Danganronpa anime as it will be original rather than an adaptation), Ace Attorney...
I predict that Erased will fall apart in its final quarter, if not before then.
I will admit that was not the most satisfying ending, but I'm not gonna let that detract from how great the rest of the show was.
ANYWAY ON TO NEXT SEASON DIAMOND IS NOT CRASH HERE WE GOOO
Oh boy. I could go nuts in this thread but I'll try to keep it tame. My taste in anime is different from most. Lighthearted slice-of-life is what I usually watch, with some random other stuff mixed in. I like comedy and cute things as central themes.
As far as Slice of Life goes, I've found that I greatly enjoy it in most of its numerous forms, with the sole exception of the so-called tearjerkers such as AnoHana.

Yeah. I generally avoid ones like that. I like joy and happiness in my anime, and a little drama is ok as long as there isn't too much.
In summer 2014 I really found my true love for it. It's become one of those things I can't go too long without, or I go a bit crazy xD
It takes another Brotherhood (https://myanimelist.net/anime/33080/Brotherhood__Final_Fantasy_XV?q=final%20fant) to slay the king (https://myanimelist.net/anime/5114/Fullmetal_Alchemist__Brotherhood).
:neverusethis:
Speaking of subtlety, I highly recommend a show called Yuyushiki. It's no So Ra No Wo To or Non Non Biyori, but I found myself smiling throughout its entire duration. I love the subtle character development on the part of its lead; it's a small, yet clever and realistic, change in her personality that brought a newfound appreciation to earlier parts of the show.
But Gintama slayed the king...
By the way, did you ever finish Shinsekai Yori? If so, what did you think of it?
You don't like One Punch Man, you don't like Erased, now I find out you didn't like AnoHana?
maaaan
I have a feeling you would not like many of my favorite shows.
I'm scared to list my favorites xD I'd be shocked if anyone here likes what I like.
I suppose it's not out of the realm of possibility though..
I do love Penguindrum.
My top 5 (there may be some nostalgia glasses):
1) Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni
2) Kara no Kyoukai
3) Bakemonogatari (actually the whole series besides Nise)
4) Elfen Lied
5) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Some other honourable mentions: Steins;gate, Madoka, Fate/Zero, FMA Brotherhood, Toradora, Evangelion, Azumanga Daioh...
My top 10:
FMA: Brotherhood
Kaiji
Code Geass
Fate/Zero
One Piece
Death Note
Steins Gate
Legend of Galactic Heroes
Parasyte
Monster
So, Kaiji aside, pretty conventional stuff. Now, about controversial opinions:
Highly rated animes that i didn't like: Evangelion and AnoHana.
Highly rated animes that i only found decent: Angel Beats, Tengen Toppa, Hellsing Ultimate and Cowboy Bebop.
Oh yeah how did I forget Code Geass?
I'm right with you on AnoHana. But NGE, though... I admit that my love for the series has partially diminished since I first watched it, but End of Evangelion still gets me every time, and Asuka is my all-time favorite anime character. Are your feelings towards it closer to indifference or dislike?
So much anime and so little time.
Man all the people who like the kind of anime I like don't post anymore go look at the early pages and there's none of this
fuckin
JOJO TODAY THOUGH OR LIKE AT MIDNIGHT I DUNNO SOON THOUGH
So watching Ace Attorney on Crunchyroll I'm a little conflicted. Some part of me thinks it's cool that they're using the japanese names, but another part of me wishes they were using the english ones.
Finished Kanamemo the other day, finally. I'm gonna miss those girls :'( Now I'm trying to get through another unfinished anime before moving on to one of the awesome recommendations in this thread :P It goes a little something like this
(https://puu.sh/oelHy.png)
Expression too priceless
Re: Kanamemo; that genre combination is...interesting. I'll have to give it a try soon.
Kanamemo looks like a type of show I like, but the Ecchi tag threw me off. I've never seen a moe SoL with one before. If you take that out, it's the same genre as Yuru Yuri, which I greatly enjoyed.
I'm generally fine with sexualization in anime as long as it services either the characters or comedy. In something like the aforementioned Yuru Yuri, all of the sexual elements arise from the characters' interactions and fantasies (I'll never get tired of Chitose's nosebleed gag, for example). Monogatari, especially Nise, is also great at this. Yes, even the infamous toothbrush scene. Hell, I was even fine with it in MonMusu, as that show was hilarious. I'm only bothered when the fanservice is there for its own sake. I don't have any examples off of the top of my head, as I tend to avoid the types of shows prone to this behavior.
The Ecchi tag is almost exclusively because of Haruka and her creepy fantasies xD...I'd say that Haruka falls into the category of "There just to provide suggestive images"
xD I haven't seen any Monogatari series yet, or MonMosu. Not sure of that scene you're talking about, but it sounds interesting, to say the least.
I only felt Nisemonogatari took it too far.
In most of the series it's almost like... tasteful... but in Nise it's just excessive.
imo~
Finished watching the other thing on my list. Once I get the itch to watch something again (Which'll probably be sometime later today lol) I'll give something new a try :)
It'll definitely be more SoL/Comedy. I can't get enough of that xD
Yuyushiki, I presume? :)
Once I finish the third arc of LoGH, I'll start one of your favorites, most likely GochiUsa. Is there anything you'd recommend over that?
I only felt Nisemonogatari took it too far.
In most of the series it's almost like... tasteful... but in Nise it's just excessive.
imo~
I find this strange, as you listed Elfen Lied as one of your favorites on the previous page. EL is the definition of excessive, in terms of both sexual content and violence. Though something like Saya no Uta (which I greatly enjoyed, BTW) goes much further, the content is usually in service of the characters or themes, even at its most violent and rape-y points. Despite being one of the most fucked up works I've read to date, I wouldn't call SnU excessive.
Regarding Elfen Lied... I will definitely say that Lynn Okamoto wrote a shitty manga. He didn't really have any idea what he was writing. The team that adapted it into an anime managed to, imo, pull something beautiful out of that. Whatever Okamoto's intent was, all the nudity in the anime at least feels thematically relevant, mostly via the Japanese symbolism of nudity=innocence.
Watched the first episode of Yuyushiki last night :3 I love it already. Yui is my favorite girl so far.
I'll just leave this here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9D5BDoMlUZs Don't watch for too long or you might suffer a HNNNNNG attack
She's my favorite as well. :tup
That video is strangely addicting, so I'll leave this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU2rFQ1v8zY) here.
I never found Yuyushiki all that funny; in fact, the characters laughed more than I did. Instead, it kept me engaged via its happy atmosphere and character interactions.
Yui is easily my favorite character. If not for Kyouko, she would be my favorite in Yuri Yuru as well (same VA and similar personality).
Watched the first two episodes of My Hero Academia today... I'll probably be watching more.

I love the subtle character development on the part of its lead; it's a small, yet clever and realistic, change in her personality that brought a newfound appreciation to earlier parts of the show.
It's the chest. Yui was embarrassed by her lack of development in the first episode. The scene in the final episode subtly emphasizes that her body had changed over the year in which the series is set, and her behavior indicates that she is no longer embarrassed. It's a pretty small detail, but it enriched the entire show for me.
Now would probably be a good time for me to lookup a newer SoL. I've been going through all the "old" ones xD
Yuyushiki? Old? It came out in 2013!
If you want stuff from last year, I recommend Non Non Biyori and Gakkou Gurashi!. NNB came out in 2013, but both its "sequel" and GG! aired last summer. NNB Repeat was my AOTY 2015, though I liked the first season a little better. It's relaxing, funny, and adorable. GG!, on the other hand, is not your standard slice of life. If you plan to watch it, don't look up anything about it, not even its genre. The writing is questionable in a few places, but it's one of the most unique titles in recent memory. Its characters are more complex than those of your standard slice of life, and it is one of a few anime to handle tonal shifts well. You'll know if you'll like it by the end of the first episode.
I'm watching a few other shows, but they aren't notable enough, in either a good or bad way, to talk about here.

If it isn't part of the current or previous anime season, I usually consider it old :P It's not meant in a bad way, of course :)
I actually started watching NNB last year, but for some reason I ended up getting into other anime, and never finished NNB. I'll probably end up rewatching it from the beginning since I only watched four episodes. As for Gakkou... I already know what that is :P It's not the type of atmosphere I like, to be honest. It has that dark side to it, which turns me off. I read the first few chapters of the manga but stopped pretty early on.
Oh. Well, you can't go wrong with any of the three SoL I mentioned in my previous post.
GG! was one of the few times I read the source before the anime came out. I loved it, though I understand not liking its atmosphere; it certainly is not for everyone.
You really need to finish NNB. Maybe this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O51o05gfk9A) will convince you to pick it back up. :)
Greetings!
I've never watched any anime properly before because I've never been into the style, but I love Japanese movies and have watched a lot of good ones lately, many of which are incidentally based on manga/anime, so I figured now was as good a time as ever to give it a chance. I decided to start with Death Note, since I loved the psychology between L and Light in the movies, and figured it would be great to see it expanded in the series.
I just finished episode 9, where Light meets L face to face for the first time. So far I'm enjoying the series a lot. I already know the major story points from the movies, which actually makes me more excited to see it play out here and compare the similarities and differences. I'm also glad it appears to be the same voice actor for Ryuk in the movies and series, because he brings a lot of personality to the character.
You can watch Assassination Classroom, it's currently airing (the 2nd season). It will still take some years to fully adapt all of the manga though.
Now, never watched it but most says the Gantz anime isn't as good as the manga. Plus it wasn't fully adapted (there's no ending).
I haven't seen Death Note, but it's quite popular in my area. It's always interesting to find out what makes others like the anime they like, especially since I'm usually the opposite :lol
You should get to it at some point. Despite what its name may imply, it's not remotely dark. The common opinion is that it diminishes in the final third (I personally found the second third, aside from its spectacular conclusion, to be far inferior to the final third), but the first third is some of the most exciting stuff out there, and is well worth watching.
It has an R+ rating on MAL so I'm probably not going to watch it. I don't like blood/violence in anime unless it's mild or for comedic purposes.
HunterXHunter was too much for me, and I'm sure many would consider that anime to be pretty tame by comparison to some others out there. This is why I stick to Slice Of Life :P
Death Note has an R+ rating? The boxset here only has the equivalent of a PG-13 rating. I'm only 14 episodes in, but I don't recall any blood (maybe one shot of someone dead with blood pooling under them), and the deaths are just people clutching their chest and falling over from heart attacks. It's not gory at all, most of the show focuses on the psychological back and forth between the guy causing the deaths, and the guy trying to catch him.
How far did you get into HxH? The early parts are tame, but later arcs become quite violent. The switch happens around 30-40 episodes in.
I have to avoid most anime outside of SoL/Comedy because so many things remind me of so many other things.

It's a shame really. You gonna be missing some of the very best animes then. Well, at least there's plenty good stuff from the Slice of Life and Comedy genres.
But i imagine there's some SoL animes that can be pretty sad, no?
Hm, just to be sure and, if you don't want to talk about it, just say and i will stop.
Your dislike of violence/blood/gore is because a kind of trauma or not?
Ok, fair enough. Sorry.
God I love the Parasyte anime so fucking much. I actually really dislike a lot of anime in recent years even when it comes to shows based off of my favorite manga, sometimes specifically because of that, but that show did fucking EVERYTHING right. It's spectacular. So power. So energy.

On that note, I was super, super excited to see an anime adaptation of Ajin and then I watched it. I...I just...The potential. It's like some one shit all over my already low expectations and then shoved that shit back up my ass and then I threw it up somehow. That's what it's like. Jesus fucking christ. "Hey guys, this manga is fucking awesome. Let's FUCK IT ALL UP".

This. I also had read the manga before watching the anime adaptation. It was so expertly adapted, they even "modernized" the characters (since that manga is nearly 30 years old).
Talking about manga, why 20th Century Boys never got an anime adaptation?

Funny enough, I actually dropped Parasyte a few episodes into it as it aired. Nothing interested me; the characters were flat, the action boring, and I didn't care about anything that was happening. On that note, I was super, super excited to see an anime adaptation of Ajin and then I watched it. I haven't watched Ajin, but if you feel that way... Well, I really don't want to see your reaction to the upcoming Berserk adaptation. An arc after the Golden Age is finally animated, but in shitty CG. The show looks awful.
Which reminds me, I really need to pick that manga back up. I stopped during the eclipse because my device had issues loading the chapters correctly, and its been so long that I'll likely need to start from the beginning.
Taco, I'm 3/4 of the way through GochiUsa's first season. I'll likely finish either tonight or tomorrow.
I admit the only Slice of Life anime i liked was Clannad and After Story. That genre isn't my cup of tea at all.
I admit the only Slice of Life anime i liked was Clannad and After Story. That genre isn't my cup of tea at all.
WTF half of those aren't even SoL.
At MAL, the best rated SoL are After Story, the Mushishis, GTO, Natsume, Aria, Ano Mita Hana. Really, the first Clannad is a bit far from the top.
Now, what is the peak of SoL for you?
WTF half of those aren't even SoL.
Good SoL: Nichijou, Watamote, Lucky Star, K-on, and the unassailable all time king of the genre: Azumanga Daioh
Does Slice of Life has a definition or everyone has their own thinking about what consists a SoL anime?
It might, but I consider SoL to be a work that takes an extreme character driven approach, with little to no overall plot.
like Mushishi. I know that was on your list earlier, but I would describe that as a supernatural mystery show, not Slice of Life at all.
It might, but I consider SoL to be a work that takes an extreme character driven approach, with little to no overall plot.
That's the main reason i don't like it. Little to no plot and episodic structure without a main plot is the two things that i loathe the most.

Hopefully you're enjoying it :)
I have no idea how I'll react to Watamote. Welcome to the NHK is also described as cringe comedy, but I never cringed when watching it.
Don't get me wrong, i care about the characters too. Absence of plot is what i don't like.
I have no idea how I'll react to Watamote. Welcome to the NHK is also described as cringe comedy, but I never cringed when watching it.
I never finished Welcome to the NHK, but what I saw never had anything on the level of Watamote, cringe-wise.
But would you be able to watch a show that has a great plot, but nonexistent characters?
As for everything before that... I don't think I've ever cringed so much in only 15 minutes. And, before you ask, no, I haven't seen Watamote.
I can easily handle, and even like, the former, but hate the latter. I imagine that non-fantasy fans feel the same way when listening to a Rhapsody/RoF album.
I do not understand the general anime fandom's fascination with this show.
My favorites are the Shinonome household. The trio of Hakase/Professor, Nano, and Sakamoto is hard to top.
Make sure you watch the "prequel" episode at some point, preferably before the final episode. Though MAL has it listed as a prequel, it actually takes place sometime after episode 3. Not that time has any meaning in Nichijou. :lol
The great thing about Nichijou as compared to most SoL shows is that it's actually funny
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH SICK BURN
*air horns*
SHOTS FIRED
I feel terrible saying this because there's another user on this forum who loves K-on!, but I have to be honest too..
See but K-on! is also funny. I feel like a lot of these "Cute girls doing cute things" shows are trying to capitalize on K-on's success but missing out on what made it next level: the humour (and the music). Come on. Moe moe kyun? Classic.
Similarly I feel shows like Hyouka and Chuunibyou were trying to do the Haruhi thing but missing the crucial element: real stakes.
See but K-on! is also funny.
See but K-on! is also funny.
I humbly disagree... I didn't laugh once while watching it.
How much did you watch? The appeal of K-on! started to emerge about 3 or 4 episodes in.
Here we are talking about the intracicies of SoL when all I want is to talk about how being meguca is suffering, whether Shiki can kill servants, and tell Shinji to get in the fuxking robot.
I finished GochiUsa's second season, and it was a huge improvement over the first in every area. It was cuter, funnier, more atmospheric, established its characters better, and so on. My favorite episodes were the pair featuring Mocha. They showed why Cocoa acts the way she does, and gave her character more depth than the typical "cute anime girl". My favorite is still Rize, but Cocoa is now a close second. If there is ever a third season, I'd love to see the rest of the cast treated similarly.
I've been watching Watamote at a slower pace. I find it hard to watch more than one episode every day or two. Though I have yet to finish it, I do think I've watched enough to comment on myThis, definitely. Rarely when watching any show have I had such an internal conflict of "This is so painful to watch", and "I want to watch more of this immediately". Such a great show, it absolutely nails what it's going for.
Similarly I feel shows like Hyouka and Chuunibyou were trying to do the Haruhi thing but missing the crucial element: real stakes.I feel like Chunnibyou was doing enough of its own thing. There were stakes, they were just entirely personal. I thought Rikka's ark in the first season was well done.
I liked K-on! for its subtle characterization and development. Every character acts slightly differently depending on who is near them while sticking to their core personalities, making them feel more like real people than mere "cute anime girls". They are also dynamic, the most obvious example being Yui. It was the characterization, not the humor, that brought K-on! to the next level.I'd agree with this. When I first saw K-On, I wasn't familiar at all with the whole 'slice of life' thing, and was caught off guard by the tone of it. When I got used to what it was doing, I liked it. Such a subtle, character focused show is right up my alley.

Give it 9 months. We'll have another 12 chapters.
The guy should just write the story and let someone else draw.

Hm, i read that manga because it was short, very praised and i thought the synopsis was very interesting too. Ended up it didn't resonate with me not even a bit :-\
Time to start Aria! I usually try to enter each show I watch with the same, moderately low, expectations, but have high hopes for this one. It's generally considered to be one of the best examples of my favorite genre, and I am curious to see if it lives up to its reputation.
I actually read the first chapter a few weeks back. It utterly failed to sell me on the characters and their interactions, which are arguably the most important part of a drama such as Orange
I say "supposed", as it fell entirely flat.
One episode in, and I already like Mob Psycho 100 a lot more than I ever liked One Punch Man.
Aside from that and Orange, the only show I've already dropped, my expectations of this season have been surprisingly accurate. Let's see how much that changes by the end of the Summer. :lol
That and Sweetness & Lightning are my top 2 shows the season, hands down.
Also - finally started to see what all the fuss is with Re:Zero. It doesn't start great IMO but gets really strong a few more episodes in. Still need to catch up to where the show is currently at.
That and Sweetness & Lightning are my top 2 shows the season, hands down.
S&L is the one show I've been hesitant on trying. I dislike children in real life, and anime is no different.
Well, Tsumugi isn't nearly as annoying as any of the children from Barakamon. This is a good sign.

Is anybody else watching the Brotherhood FFXV series? While probably not a great show in its own right, I do like it for the purpose it serves.I'm really hyped for FFXV, but sadly haven't been as into brotherhood. Watched the first two episodes, haven't gotten around to the third one.
Just started Food Wars tonight. It's good. A bit more pervy than I like, but that does kind of keep it fun. My wife and I were watching it together and definitely rolled our eyes more than a few times, but kept going anyway.
Re: Sweetness and Lightning. I liked what it did, but every episode was essentially the same thing. Has there been any notable character progression since episode five? I don't find it entertaining enough to watch for the sake of watching it, and had gotten everything I wanted out of it by that point. If S&L becomes more than more of the same, I may pick it back up.Slowly but surely, it's getting there. The episode format has shaken up a lot recently, with something cooking food being only half of the episode, or not really occurring at all. The emotional complexity of the situation is also getting a lot more apparent, but still not to the point where you should expect a new development every single episode.

Watching the original Dragon Ball in sequence because why not. It has more personality than DBZ imo.I also agree that DB is the better show, but check out filler-less DBZ Kai afterwards.
What are your guys' opinion on Soul Eater?
I was looking forward to the shitstorm Re:Zero's final episode would trigger, but White Fox decided to cut the last few lines of dialogue. :tdwn
Overall, I was not a fan. Every once in a while, it would execute something brilliant (eg. Emilia's split with Subaru, the snow shot at the end of ep 15, the entirety of 'From Zero'), but most of what bridged those moments is not to my liking, often unintentionally cringe-y, straight up stupid, or impossible to take seriously.
Though the final episodes of most shows haven't aired yet, I can confidently say that season isn't quite on the same level as Spring, but much better than both Winter and last Fall.
If Hibike! Euphonium S2 is anywhere near as good as the first, it will be my unrivaled AOTY.
I recently watched Princess Tutu, which i thoroughly enjoyed.
If you haven't already seen Revolutionary Girl Utena, I'd highly recommend that series too. It's a bit longer than PT and feels a little repetitive at times, since it's one of those 90's anime shows, but it has a similar theme of deconstructing fairy tales and their tropes.

I started Utena but around episode 17 I kind of stopped watching. I think I'll pick that one back up.
SEIZON
SENRYAKUUUUUUUUUUU
That's the only of his stuff I've seen but I loved it. Does Utena have a similar vibe?
Also looking at their list of works it seems that the quality of White Fox peaked real early with Katanagatari and Steins;gate.
When does fall begin? I'm dying this week... lol.
Not seeing much that interests me, but it's hard to judge based on premise. I don't have time to watch episodes of everything so I'm sure some favorite will emerge within a week or two. When does fall begin? I'm dying this week... lol.
It's technically already begun, but the first batch of titles (https://www.senpai.moe/?season=fall2016&sort=premiere&zone=America/New_York&mode=table) you may be interested in start this Saturday.

Only thing I'm super interested in this season is Occultic;Nine. Hopefully it'll be better than Robotics;Notes.
I mean in a season that appears to be mostly full of ecchi harem shit, generic shonen shit, and chuunibyou edgelord shit (aka most seasons), I'm willing to give it a chance even if only so I have more than just Jojo to watch. The pacing was certainly bad, but I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt on wanting to introduce most of the major characters.
Looking at the premise of that show it doesn't sound like something I'll be into. Like Hikaru no Go. I just can't see an anime about a board game being very entertaining.
What I need in my life right now:Picking up on "Xenosaga", I'll throw my rec in for Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans.
A good anime series that's based on an adventure video game series (say, Xenosaga or Final Fantasy) OR a good fantasy adventure series like Akatsuki no Yona, Chrono Trigger, Rune Soldier Louie (I mean not this one because it sucked, but the same general idea), etc.
For some reason I just have a hankering for a band of heroes traveling together. However, unlike Hai to Gensou no Grimgar, I want to see a series where the heroes actually reach their goal, defeat the big bad, whatever (although I'd be willing to let it slide if the series is of the level of quality of, say, Saiyuki). Thanks in advance!
So accidentally watched the first chapter of the new season of Mushi Shi, and liked it, but dunno if starting with the original series or keep watching this season (because it's available on Netflix, the other ain't).
Finished it. What the fuck. :lol
Regarding this season, so far I have only been watching Little Witch Academia (though I'm a few episodes behind). I may check out Chaos;child because I like Nitro+ a lot, and I may check out AoEx because I watched the first series.
OK, now you can start Rebuild :DI'll tackle that one once the last movie is out :P
After a quick run through FLCL, now am watching Serial Experiments Lain with bae. Holy fuck this is mind-bending, surreal stuff. I like it :PFinished it some days ago, it was a fucking trip. Good stuff. Now, because I've been digging lots of pretty dark, surreal stuff both in anime and movies and games lately, began with Mushi-shi for a change of mood. And I'm digging it quite a bit.
Also started The Tatami Galaxy, the pace is fucking crazy at time but so good so far. And rewatching Death Note for old time's sake :PFinished both - damn Tatami was excellent, very unconventional yet lovely series, and the last two episodes just got to me. Gorgeous stuff. And Death Note, I had forgotten how smart it was, even if some of L's and mostly Near's deductions were a bit too accurate most of the time.
Been watching some mediocre anime recently, like Paranoia Agent and Hellsing Ultimate, and now began with Ping Pong the Animation and damn this is excellent :metalJust finished it, holy shit :hefdaddy . It was one hell of an emotional roller coaster and I highly recommend it, pretty creative and unconventional series. Now, gonna take a long break from anime, I feel overwhelmed but also happy to end this period on such a high note.
Since this is the DT forums I have some anime recommendations that involve music. I would recommend Anonymous Noise (its available on Amazon Prime), Your Lie in April (this is going to make you cry), Sound! Euphonium, and Kids on The Slope.
I am watching neon genesis evangelion for the first time. I like itOh boi
Just watched the movie The End of Evangelion
I understand nothing :lol
I think it's about time to rewatch Evangelion.I've been feeling the need to scratch that itch lately. Might start soon...
Just stumbled upon a pretty damn good Anime. Psycho-pass
Dystopian future like minority report where you are arrested based on you "potential" to commit crimes. Story follows the agents and their tracking down "latent" criminals. Really enjoying it
