I actually got started with them through their live album "Live on St. Patricks Day". I think their most accessible album is "Blackout" though. "Do Or Die", "The Gang's All Here", and "Sing Loud, Sing Proud" have a different singer, but they're all excellent album (and "Sing Loud, Sing Proud" is far more traditionally-Irish oriented) with the new singer, my preferences are 1. "Blackout" 2. "The Meanest of Times", 3. "The Warriors Code".
With the old singer, 1. "Sing Loud, Sing Proud" 2. "Do Or Die" 3. "The Gang's All Here"

I thought this thread would help me and others maybe discover new bands or great songs or albums, since I am still new to the metal and prog scene and discovering new bands every week.
So post the Best Song(or 3) I don't mind ;D (In Your Opinion) of your 10 favorite bands and help me or others discover some more great music!
Dream Theater - Change of Seasons/In the Name of God/Voices
Pink Floyd - Dogs/Comfortably Nuimb/Coming Back to Life
Dredg - Planting Seeds
Opeth - Burden
Between the Buried and Me - White Walls
Marillion - Sugar Mice
Beach Boys - Till I die/surfs up/Caroline No
Pain of Salvation - Shore Serenity/Undertow
Avenged Sevenfold - Seize the Day/Critical Acclaim
Rush - Tom Sawyer/Mission
These are the bands that I am only really familiar with so you see why I look forward to your more experienced lists!
when you get more music i have a feeling beach boys will leave your top 10
Huge fail right there
Truly. I'd give him a little slack though, he's probably still in the mindset that the Beach Boys aren't nearly cool enough for him to understand how much of an impact they had on the world, both musically and otherwise. They aren't my style, but I've heard enough of them to realize that half the bands I listen to today wouldn't be around and/or wouldn't be nearly as talented if not for the Beach Boys. Either way, here goes:
Porcupine Tree - And The Swallows Dance Above The Sun and Slave Called Shiver
Dream Theater - Surrounded
Opeth - April Ethereal
Between The Buried And Me - Sun of Nothing and Mordecai (To close to decide/lazy)
H.I.M. - The Sacrament
The Killers - Spaceman
Metallica - Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Tool - Jimmy
A Perfect Circle - Orestes
Counting Crows - I Wish I Was A Girl
There it is. A little of this, a little of that. I'm sure CC will stand out to most as being a WTF choice among the others, but I guess that's what happens when you grow up in a house blazing Metallica and Black Sabbath at one moment (metalhead dad), then Rush and CC the other (hippie/southern mother). This thing changes nearly constantly, but this list I think is pretty consistent, even if the songs will change, most of the bands will stay save for a couple (HIM and Killers most likely). Good lists on here though, seeing some interesting choices.
-
I put my fave album from the band in the middle also, just for fun. Strange how many of my favourite songs by the band aren't on my favourite album - 6 out of 10.

2. Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun - Arriving Somewhere...But Not Here
3. Symphony X - V - Of Sins and Shadows

Truly. They aren't my style, but I've heard enough of them to realize that half the bands I listen to today wouldn't be around and/or wouldn't be nearly as talented if not for the Beach Boys. Either way, here goes:
It's funny you should say that because my friend and I, who are always listening to album after album after album (and enjoying only a small number of them, I myself only listen to about 25 bands in total) to see what the world's music is made of, listened to a few Beach Boys albums a few weeks ago.
I Just Wasn't Meant for These Times came out of nowhere. Back in their time no one was singing songs about actual depression. When I heard the line "Sometimes I feel very sad",.....oh my god.
They are definitely more than just a Surfin' USA band.

5. Dropkick Murphys - Fields of Athenry
I wanna check out this band, any album to start with that you would recommend?
"The Gang's All Here"
Sorry to get all pedantic on you, but Mike only sang on Do Or Die. Since then, it's been Al (and of course Ken). Maybe youre somewhat thinking of when they changed guitarists from the original guy (Rick?) to Marc & James? That was between Gang's All here and Sing Loud Sing Proud.

Well, you are Pedantic and Ridiculous
But you seem to be right. I could have pulled out my albums for that, but didn't feel like it, and so I guessed. Thanks for setting it straight.
They've gone through a lot of lineup changes. I was pissed when Spicy left and was replaced with Scruffy. Now, doing the Spicy McHaggis Jig would be really weird.

BUT, this ain't the subject of the thread. We should stop this NAO.

It's also my favorite by DT. ;)

Pink Floyd-Shine on You Crazy Diamond
Porcupine Tree-Shesmovedon
Peter Gabriel-Secret World
Bruce Springsteen-Thunder Road
Iron Maiden-Powerslave
Marillion-Neverland
Muse-Hysteria
Wow, that was about a year ago, and the post I made between now and then just said to add "Deadhead" to that list. Well, let's update it again!
Rush-Limelight
Bruce Springsteen-Thunder Road
Devin Townsend-Deadhead
Porcupine Tree-Buying New Soul. Or Trains. Or Arriving Somewhere. Or Russia On Ice. Or Shesmovedon. Or Prodigal. Damn, too many good songs its hard for me to even pick a top ten. Don't think there's another band like this though.
Opeth-April Ethereal. Or Blackwater Park. Or Bleak. Or When. Or In My Time of Need. Or Hessian Peel. FUCK. At least I can get a top ten.
Mew-Beach
Radiohead-Jigsaw Falling Into Place
Coheed & Cambria-The Light and the Glass
Peter Gabriel-Secret World
Dream Theater-Trial of Tears
Maybe its just because its getting towards that fall/winter time of year, but I feel that Opeth and Mew have effectively replaced Marillion and Muse. I still love Muse, but The Resistance has disappointed me a lot, though I still adore the three albums in the middle. Marillion is one of those bands that got me into modern music along with DT, but I don't really find myself listening to either era as much anymore. "Neverland" is still the greatest love song ever and if you say otherwise Tri.ad and I will fight you.
I don't even know who replaced Pink Floyd, but this is another case where I used to really adore them, and I still do, but there are at least ten other artists I find myself enjoying more and more. That doesn't stop WYWH from being my favorite album ever. Not really sure what Maiden is doing there on the original list, seeing as I listen to them semi-obsessively during the summer and then stop for every other season. Funny how things change over a year. Last year I probably wouldn't have had the Bjork song "I've Seen it All" stuck in my head like it is now.

9) Iron Maiden - Invaders
10) Megadeth - Hangar 18
Picking my favourite Maiden song was especially tough. I went with Invaders because it was one of the songs that first got me into metal.
-
Couldn't really pick 10, so I just took my top 25 artists on last.fm overall :blush Italicised the 2nd song of each band to try and make it a bit easier to read.

Strange to see Metallica is slowly being pushed out of my favorite bands list. I still love their music and they've been my favorite band for years, but I guess I'm losing interest, and most of my love for Metallica is becoming emotional value rather than actual interest in the music. Iron Maiden isn't the same, they've been very active recently and they're still putting out amazing music (still need to check out Book of Souls).
-
Dream Theater - In the Presence of Enemies
Epica - Consign to Oblivion (A New Day Dawns pt. III)
Kamelot - Memento Mori
Nightwish - Beauty of the Beast

Great to see some love for The Mars Volta - that one is not my favourite song (or band) anymore, but for a long time it was.
And about Maiden: I agree - it's great seeing them so active this far in their career. The Book Of Souls is an awesome album to me, so I recommend you check it out when possible.
OK, this is my list:
Bands I got into when I was...
...In Elementary school
2001 Blink-182 - "Ghost On The Dancefloor" (2011)
The Offspring - "All I Have Left Is You" (2012)
...In Highschool
2004 The Cure - "This. Here & Now. With You" (2008)
Iron Maiden - "The Book Of Souls" (2015)
2005 Dream Theater - "Illumination Theory" (2013)
The Mars Volta - "Desperate Graves" (2009)
...In College
2010 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Zero" (2009)
2012 Les Luthiers - "Paz En La Campiña" (2008)
2014 Eruca Sativa - "El Genio De La Nada" (2012)
El Cuarteto De Nos - "El Aprendiz" (2014)
(Many of my favourite songs were released a long time after I got into the band, and that's something that makes me feel good with myself - I'm always open to new releases by bands, eventhough they are past their prime. There's always the possibility I might be surprised :corn)
-
I assume by "best" we mean our "favorite". It's tough, because nailing down my 10 favorite bands could vary from day to day. Here's what it might look like today:
Kiss – King of the Night Time World
Van Halen – Feel Your Love Tonight or Sinner’s Swing
ZO2 – Red Line Highway
Smithereens – Behind the Wall of Sleep
Descendents – Coolidge
Dokken – In My Dreams
Enuff Z’Nuff – New Thing
Steel Panther – Girl From Oklahoma
Mr. Big – Merciless or Take a Walk
Whitesnake – Slide It In
-
Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever
Boards of Canada - Roygbiv
The Cure - Lovesong
Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again
The National - Mistaken for Strangers
Pet Shop Boys - Being Boring

-
Note this list really isnt in order as it would have taken me too long to decide on the ranking :lol
Black Sabbath - The Writ
Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a Madman
King Diamond - Black Horsemen
Judas Priest - Beyond The Realms of Death
Dream Theater - Metropolis
Metallica - Fade to Black
Deep Pruple - Child in Time
Iron Maiden - 22 Acacia Avenue (this one changes a lot)
Megadeth - Holy Wars
Alter Bridge - Blackbird
-
Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)

Swans - Blind Love
Boris - Flood III

Last one was a tough choice between TMV and a few others (PT/SW, Anathema, Deftones, NiN, BTBAM & Neurosis) but I went with TMV this time. It's really hard though. The only 5 I'm 100% on would be the top 5. The rest changes.
-

Very cool to see this again after 6,5 years. A couple of those I still love, and a couple I rarely ever listen to nowadays. I always thought my taste has changed a lot in the past few years, but apparently it didn't really.
I mean the bold ones are still a couple of my favorite songs ever. The italic ones are songs I still really like, but don't listen to that often. And the two others I grew out of (PoS) or have no idea how they came up in that list (Bass Communion). I don't even remember owning (digitally I'm not sure, but physically definitely not) that song. Will revisit it. It's like getting a letter from my past self :lol
EDIT: actually I DO own that song, on CD. I thought it was Construct I, oh well, another that I still really enjoy.

Awesome thread. I'm going to use it to discover (or rediscover) bands. Don't know how people could narrow it down not just to the top 10 bands, but then the best song of each. Seems like it would drive me crazy.

Let's give this a shot. My tastes have been moving so fast lately because of roulette stuff that I don't know what my ten will be, but I'll try. Probably will mix old and new stuff.
These are the bands that are solidly among my longtime favorites.
Coldplay - Midnight
Death Cab for Cutie - We Looked Like Giants
Dream Theater - Breaking All Illusions
Haken - Celestial Elixir
Iron Maiden - Starblind (there are several that could go here, though)
Metallica - To Live Is To Die
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score
Transatlantic - All of the Above (I guess? Could be The Whirlwind or Kaleidoscope as well)
The other two will have to be from bands that I'm still getting into, where I don't have nearly all their albums:
Kamelot - Memento Mori
Yes - Close to the Edge
-
I am probably forgetting something but here:
Porcupine Tree - Trains
Pink Floyd - Wish you where here
Fair To Midland - Orphan Anthem '86
Haken - Cockroach King

Thumpermonkey - My Reality Is Stronger / Sleeve

Faith No More, Mr Bungle - Malpractice / Ars Moriendi
I couldn't choose only one song for a band. It's already hard for me to choose only 10 bands between long time favourites and recently discovered bands
-
Coldplay - Midnight
Death Cab for Cutie - We Looked Like Giants
Good to see some love for Coldplay in this forum, though I like other songs more than that one.
Also: I discovered Death Cab For Cutie last year, with Kintsugi. Great album! Reminds me of Coldplay and The Cure, both of which I like a lot.

All of their first three are top notch. I've given their latest some time to warm on me, but it's not happening. It's not terrible, but it's not as good as the others.

This is more of favorite songs, not best songs. :)
If I read correctly the title of the topic I would have changed some choices in my list :)
-
This is going to require a bit of thinking.
I think it's impossible to pick the best songs, so these will be my favorite songs from these bands/artists
1. Rush - Mystic Rhytms
2. Toto - Don't Chain My Heart
3. Pink Floyd - High Hopes
4. Iron Maiden - The Evil That Men Do (There are a lot of IM songs that could go here...)
5. Mastodon - CZar
6. Intronaut - Miasma
7. Baroness - Eula
8. Genesis - Duchess
9. Graveyard - The Siren
10. Kingston Wall - Two of a Kind
Honorable mention: Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons
1-5 is very solid. There is about 20 contenders for spots 6-10, so this list is very much subject to change..
-

This List Would be completely different yesterday and tomorrow!!

Cool!
A couple more:
"Right Now": Korn?
"Alone": The Gathering? Or maybe Blink-182? (that's from an obscure demo, but who knows - maybe we both like the band).

Wrong on both. :p

Got it! Alone by Jame Labrie. I could also go with Alone by Heart, but they are not among my favorite bands. :lol
If Korn - Right Now is anyone's favorite Korn song, let alone anyone's favorite song, I'll leave DTF for good
You don't have to leave. :rollin
Clue: Right Now has glorious piano playing. Glorious.

Right Now = Van Halen?
And The Day I Tried to Live has to be Soundgarden right?

And The Day I Tried to Live has to be Soundgarden right?
Got it both! :tup
Sammy Hagar-era Van Halen is one of my favorite bands (DLR-era, not so much). I was debating with myself if I would list Right Now or When It's Love as I love both of these songs. Alex Van Halen's drumming on Right Now is what clinched it for me. :)
-
The rhythm section on Pleasure Dome is :hefdaddy too.
Nice to see Savatage in there ;)

It's nice of you to drop by, Van Halen. :lol
And you got Savatage correctly, too, for All That I Bleed. :tup
Pleasure Dome is amazing, too. I just realized recently that I have been overlooking Alex Van Halen, when I have actually been air-drumming him for years. His drum composition skills is amazing.
With that, the only artists not yet guessed in my Top 10 are those with the following songs:

Coldplay - Midnight
Death Cab for Cutie - We Looked Like Giants
Good to see some love for Coldplay in this forum, though I like other songs more than that one.
Also: I discovered Death Cab For Cutie last year, with Kintsugi. Great album! Reminds me of Coldplay and The Cure, both of which I like a lot.
Death Cab is great!
We Looked Like Giants is a great pick, 425, although I'd be a bit more partial to Transatlanticism (easy pick, I know), What Sarah Said, You Are a Tourist or I Was a Kaleidoscope (so much awesomeness in less than three minutes!).
-
All of those are great choices, especially Transatlanticism and What Sarah Said. To be honest, there are several others I could have chosen instead of We Looked Like Giants—Transatlanticism, Marching Bands of Manhattan, What Sarah Said, Stable Song, Grapevine Fires, St. Peter's Cathedral. But We Looked Like Giants was my first Death Cab song and still gets the slight nod as my favorite.
@Sebastian: If you haven't already, check out Transatlanticism and Plans—though I liked Kintsugi, I would say that those two are noticeably better albums, each with a handful of genuinely great songs and a ton of good ones.
As for Coldplay, Midnight is a favorite of mine that I acknowledge has nothing at all to do with Coldplay's main style, but I love the song a lot specifically for its unique atmosphere, and it would make my top five favorite songs of all time. My top five Coldplay songs are probably:
1. Midnight
2. Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall
3. A Rush of Blood to the Head
4. Viva La Vida
5. Fix You
An unconventional top 2, I know, but there's something about both of those songs that I really love. The next five would probably be Amsterdam, Death and All of His Friends, Hurts Like Heaven, True Love and The Scientist.
-
For Coldplay, I would say something like
Politik
A Rush of Blood
Yes
Princess of China
Fix You
The Scientist
Life in Technicolor II
Charlie Brown
Fly On
Amsterdam
Still haven't heard their latest though. I have it, just have to bother putting it on.
-
Coldplay has some great songs! I really love Glass of Water, that 7/4 chorus part is just epic.
-
@Sebastian: If you haven't already, check out Transatlanticism and Plans—though I liked Kintsugi, I would say that those two are noticeably better albums, each with a handful of genuinely great songs and a ton of good ones.
OK, will do! I'm curious about the band - it's the type of pop music I liked as a teenager listening to The Cure and The Smiths, but made by a contemporary band. The only other thing I know about them is that John Myung praised "I Will Possess Your Heart" in a 2011 interview.
As for Coldplay: my favourite album is Viva La Vida, and my favourite songs (although I can't think of an order right now) are:
"Glass Of Water"
"Swallowed In The Sea"
"Yellow" (obviously)
"Don't Let It Break Your Heart"
"Strawberry Swing"
"Warning Sign"
"Yes"
"A Message"
"Lovers In Japan"
"Viva La Vida"
I didn't like Ghost Stories, and I haven't checked the last one (only 2 songs, which I don't like really).
They are playing in Buenos Aires next Friday. My sister is going. I'll ask her afterwards what she thought.
-

I would agree with that; Transatlanticism and Plans are their best two albums. Still, The Photo Album is pretty damn great, too, and I have much love for Kintsugi and Codes and Keys. Narrow Stairs was somewhat of a bump in the road, even if it does have some really good tunes on there.
-

The Beatles - I am the walrus
Dream Theater - Metropolis pt1
Rush - The Camera eye

4. Something

Thin Lizzy - Cowboy song
Helloween - Keeper of the seven keys
Awesome. Just. Awesome.
-
You've got good taste. ;)

Nice to see some Mylo Xyloto love on people's Coldplay's lists—I think that album is criminally underrated. I love Charlie Brown and Don't Let It Break Your Heart. Both really great songs. And while X&Y is not anywhere close to my favorite Coldplay album, Swallowed In the Sea is a great song.
A Head Full of Dreams was a disappointment to me, honestly. It's not a bad album, but it's a bit bland. For a band that in my opinion had put out three stellar albums in a row from VLV to GS, it was disappointing to get one that was just okay. Most of the songs are good, but they don't really make a strong impression for the most part. Up&Up is a pretty good closer, so that was good. I'd just say the album is a 6/10 which is disappointing when the preceding three all would be in the 8-10/10 range.
@Sebastian: If you haven't already, check out Transatlanticism and Plans—though I liked Kintsugi, I would say that those two are noticeably better albums, each with a handful of genuinely great songs and a ton of good ones.

I Will Possess Your Heart is a good song (and I'm not surprised to hear that JMX singled it out, because it has a very good bassline), but as Kev noted, the album it's on (Narrow Stairs) is not among their best. I wouldn't say it's a bad album, but it's among their weakest ones.
I like Codes and Keys a lot. I think Kintsugi is good, but I would not rank it as high as it seems like you would. For me, the top three are Transatlanticism, Plans and Codes and Keys, then a small step down to The Photo Album, then a step down to Kintsugi and a small step down to Narrow Stairs. I have We Have the Facts... but I haven't listened to it enough to rank it, and I don't have the debut.
Narrow Stairs is one of those albums where I'll listen to it one time and think it's wonderful, and then listen to it again a couple of weeks later and think it's a dud. Ultimately, I think it's an album with a bunch of good songs that have a peculiar emotional tone to them and totally fail to make an impression if I'm not prepared to receive that emotion. Even a definitely good song like I Will Possess Your Heart just doesn't appeal to me if I'm not in a Narrow Stairs state of mind. To a certain extent this may be true for me with Kintsugi as well.
The exception is Grapevine Fires. Grapevine Fires is a beautiful song that contains a ton of my favorite musical things, and I will listen to it any day.

After reading everything all of you have said about DCFC, I have a feeling I might fall in love with them if I listen to another album. I think the only other one available around here is Codes & Keys; if next month I have some money to spare, I think I'm gonna get it. Like I said earlier, I liked Kintsugi a lot (one of my favourites from 2015), but I admit it has some weak tracks - I always skip tracks 2, 5 and 6. Still, the other songs are just so gorgeous - "No Room In Frame", "Everything's A Ceiling", "Ingenue", "Good Help"...
-
Following.
I may try to post a list later, but I have trouble just picking my ten favorite favorite bands, not to mention selecting my favorite song from each of them.

No Room in Frame is one of my favorite Death Cab songs. :tup I can't imagine skipping Black Sun, though!
If you like Kintsugi, particularly those songs, I have to imagine you'll like Codes and Keys. They have a similar, but not identical, tone about them.
I'd be interested to know your thoughts after you've listened to it! We have a Death Cab For Cutie thread here (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=3584.0), though it isn't always very active. :)

10. Aerosmith - Dream On
-
Like so many others, I couldn't narrow it down to just ten bands or artists, so I found a unique way to "cheat" in that I decided to split my list into two posts of ten each.
So here's Part 1:
1) AC/DC-T.N.T / Back in Black / Thunderstruck
2) Black Sabbath-Black Sabbath / Heaven and Hell / The Mob Rules
3) Blue Oyster Cult-Godzilla / Astronomy / Veteran of the Psychic Wars (ETL Version)
4) Deep Purple-Space Truckin' / Burn / Perfect Strangers
5) Dio- Rainbow in the Dark / The Last in Line / Strange Highways
6) Emerson Lake & Palmer-Knife Edge / From the Beginning / Fanfare for the Common Man

8) Genesis-In the Cage / Squonk / Domino
9) Iron Maiden-Flight of Icarus / Infinite Dreams / Age of Innocence
10) Judas Priest-Breaking the Law / Rock Hard Ride Free / One Shot at Glory
-
...And Part 2:
1) Kansas-Hopelessly Human / On the Other Side / The Preacher
2) Metallica-Creeping Death / Eye of the Beholder / My Friend of Misery
3) The Moody Blues-I'm Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band) / The Voice / The Other Side of Life
4) (The) Alan Parsons (Project)-I Wouldn't Want to be Like You / Can't Take it With You / You're Gonna Get Your Fingers Burned
5) Pink Floyd-Time / Dogs / The Dogs of War
6) Queensryche-Walk in the Shadows / Eyes of a Stranger / Another Rainy Night (Without You)
7) Rush-Limelight / Subdivisions / Distant Early Warning

10) Dream Theater-Pull Me Under / New Millennium
:loser:

Off the top of my head…
Opeth - Ghost of Perdition
Porcupine Tree - Gravity Eyelids
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Steven Wilson - Raider II
Megadeth - Holy Wars
Led Zeppelin - No Quarter
King Crimson - I Talk To The Wind
Peter Gabriel - Red Rain
Dream Theater - Learning To Live
Coheed & Cambria - The Willing Well I
-
10) Dream Theater-Pull Me Under / New Millennium
:loser:
I'm a "LOSER" because I like those songs?
So I guess that makes YOU a "WINNER" because you don't?
Wow! How INSIGHTFUL!!
-
Pull Me Under is still one of my favorite songs by DT hands down. I don't even listen to them much any more, but I'll never get sick of that song. I guess it's not a cool DT song to name as your favorite?
-
Guys, Jake probably is 15 (based on his tastes :neverusethis: ) so I wouldn't take him seriously, just :chill
-
Has fifteen WHAT? Or did you mean he IS fifteen? Either way, I just decided to have a little fun with it, instead of letting it piss me off.
-
In alphabetical order (not 1 to 10)
Beatles: A Day in the Life
Bring Me the Horizon: Can You Feel My Heart
Cardigans: Paralyzed
Curtis Mayfield: Pusherman
Cynic: Adam's Murmur / The Space for This
Dream Theater: Voices / Scarred / Learning to Live / Eve
Genesis: Dance on a Volcano
George Lynch: When Darkness Calls / Mr. Scary
OSI / Chroma Key: Bigger Wave / Colorblind
Pain Of Salvation: Spitfall
So that was incredibly hard. I love way too many bands and way too many songs. And some new bands were eliminated simply because I can't guarantee their longevity at this time. Some great bands had extremely short careers or just 1 or 2 stellar songs and a pile of crap after that.
-
Bring Me the Horizon: Can You Feel My Heart
I love seeing BMTH here. I really like this band.
-
Bring Me the Horizon: Can You Feel My Heart
I love seeing BMTH here. I really like this band.
They have a split personality (or just revised). It is almost like Metallica. Some swear the old stuff is great and the new stuff is commercial sell out stuff. Personally, I love every song on their latest album. I love the combination of their aggressive past with the newer melodic/harmonic synth embellished songs. I don't even know what you call that genre so I can find similar bands.
-

"New Millenium" is also one of my favourites. The same with Genesis' "Domino".
-
In no order of "top 10" as it fluctuates.
Dream Theater - Learning To Live
Ozric Tentacles - Coily

Pegan's Mind - Entrance To Infinity
Megadeth - Wonderlust
Pink Floyd - Time
Symphony X - The Odyssee
Van Halen - The Dream Is Over
-
Megadeth - Wonderlust
Great song. I'd still probably say risk is their worst album just because I can't stand breadline or crush em, but wanderlust, prince of darkness, seven, the doctor is calling, insomnia, all great songs.
-

Black Sabbath - Spiral Architect
Led Zeppelin - Ten Years Gone
Deep Purple/Rainbow - Stargazer
Three great songs here.
-
No apologies: I fucking LOVE that song. LOVE IT. The first version of "To Live Forever" is in that top five group as well.
-
This will be pretty hard since I've burn out on much of the music that I used to like and I haven't been finding new bands, so I'm in a pretty sparse period... let's see if I even have 10 bands left:
the dear hunter - king of swords
thrice - words in the water
dredg - gathering pebbles
steven wilson - no part of me
porcupine tree - dark matter
agalloch - limbs
godspeed you! black emperor - BBF3
the mars volta - cicatriz ESP
bon iver - perth
oceansize - catalyst
-
REAL quick reply with little to no thinking (aka, these are probably wrong):
Dream Theater: The Count of Tuscany
Metallica: Battery for classic, Fixxxer for Load-era
"Weird Al" Yankovic: The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota
Green Day: When It's Time (for sentimental reasons)
311: probably Use of Time
Neal Morse: Absolute Beginner or Supernatural
Genesis: No Son of Mine or Domino or The Lamia
The Offspring: Dirty Magic
SR-71: Alive
Emerson Lake and Palmer: Tarkus (but Lucky Man is also up there)
-
Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons (Tomorrow it could be Metropolis or Learning to Live. My favorite from them is perpetually changing.)
Pink Floyd - Echoes
Rush - Jacob's Ladder (It's hard to pick a favorite Rush song. There are so many that come to mind.)
Marillion - Season's End. (Another band that has numerous songs that I could pick as their best.)
Anathema - Untouchable
Neal Morse/Spock's Beard - The Light
Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways
Yes - Close to the Edge
King Crimson - Lark's Tongue In Aspic
The Flower Kings - Last Minute On Earth (This changes often as well. They have too many brilliant songs to always choose one favorite.)
-
I don't necessarily have 10 favorite bands (plus I listen to a lot of solo artists), nor do I have one specific song I like the most from each band. I'll still try to pick one of my favorite songs from 10 of my favorite bands:
Myrath - Endure The Silence
Dream Theater - Bridges In The Sky
Jamiroquai - She's A Fast Persuader
Dirty Loops - Take On The World
Earth, Wind & Fire - In The Stone
Parliament - Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)
Pleasure - Can't Turn You Loose
Tower Of Power - Rock Baby
Sly & The Family Stone - Can't Strain My Brain
Toto - Falling In Between
-
Bands and songs are in no particular order.
alt-J: Fitzpleasure
Haken: Falling Back to Earth
Dream Theater: Home
Muse: Citizen Erased
Nine Inch Nails: The Becoming
Queens Of The Stone Age: Go With The Flow
Rage Against The Machine: Wake Up
Rise Against: Injection
Foo Fighters: The Pretender
Marmozets: Move, Shake, Hide
-
In no particular order, except King's X and Riot are definitely my favorite bands.
King's X - Hate You
Riot - Narita
Aerosmith - Woman of the World
Van Halen - As Is
Motorhead - Death or Glory
Thin Lizzy - Little Girl in Bloom
Rush - La Villa Strangiato (or Red Barchetta or a million other songs)
Iron Maiden - The Prisoner
Dream Theater - Voices
Blue Oyster Cult - Redeemed
-
Neal Morse: Absolute Beginner or Supernatural
Dude!! I LOVE that song so much and every time I bring it up here I seem to get crickets. I think it gets lost next to the countless "epics" he's done, but that song is everything I love about Neal Morse, and there is a lot to love.
-
2. King Diamond - The Black Horsemen
:metal :metal :metal

Definitely gets lost in the "Seeds of Gold"s and the "So Many Roads"s... but as good as his epics are, I'm of the mindset that Neal is probably the best pop-rock songwriter right now (maybe ever). I give his Inner Circle release "More Songs from November" way more spin than most of his prog stuff, and love songs like Back to the Garden, Emma, June, Children of the Chosen, and the two mentioned above. But, yeah, Supernatural is probably the best of the bunch.
