The typical internet dialog goes something like this:

Person A:  Says something stupid that doesn't have any indicia of being a joke.
Person B:  Calls Person A on the stupid thing.
Person A:  "Oh...lighten up, the stupid thing I wrote that was actually a joke!"

That middle one; they need to up their recycling game!    Haha.   We play that, inadvertently, with my 14-year-old step son.  I keep telling him, "if you have to mash down the trash, TAKE IT OUT".   He can miraculously fold a paper plate into a one-inch square as a result, anything to get out of "taking out the trash".

I've always hated that term, and probably always will.  I have some good friends named Karen, and they'll all wonderful people.

Years ago, the word "Bob" was tossed around in a similar way, but in a much less pejorative context.  Being a "Bob" just meant being a boring, average dude.  It was hard for me to find offense with that one, though, as I'd intentionally chosen that nickname because it was so common.

Years ago, the word "Bob" was tossed around in a similar way, but in a much less pejorative context.  Being a "Bob" just meant being a boring, average dude.  It was hard for me to find offense with that one, though, as I'd intentionally chosen that nickname because it was so common.

Probably 30ish years ago, my sister and a couple of her friends and I (and then my wife got in on it) had a thing were you were "a Bob" or just "Bob" if you were the coolest person.  It was an honor to be Bob.  I think it's a little like the way teens are using "Chad" nowadays.  And a few years ago, there was a series of commercials that used "Bob" in this way.


And, just for the record, it wasn't long after that 28-month old post that I figured out what "Karen" meant in that context.  Way to be timely!

I remember the commercials.  Some guy driving on the freeway takes the exit for Bob Only.  Gets pulled over by a cop, who is suprised and goes "Oh it's you, Bob!"  And so on.

I had a former co-worker who'd moved down to the Carolinas, and around that same time, Hurricane Bob hit the East Coast of the U.S.  They had to evacuate.  He had a bunch of T-shirts made with the coastline, a hurricane graphic, and the caption "Oh it's you, Bob!"  Also, his name was Bob.

But not according to some in the Christmas movie thread!  I guess we're too un-sophisticated to not love the humour here.

BTW, I keep putting plugged in electrical cords in front of the cat in our house, hoping she'll take the bait hint.  Hasn't worked yet.
