What Is Your Favorite Album With Portnoy As Drummer?
« on: November 23, 2022, 02:40:10 PM »
Started thinking about this over the last few days as I've been revisiting his vast output. It's really a difficult decision and on any given day could change but Awake seems to be the one I gravitate to. So I guess on this day Awake is my choice.

SDoIT and Bridge Across Forever are close as is Testimony, One and I&W. Just sooo many to choose from.

Probably TOT, followed by I&W, Awake and Scenes.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Probably TOT, followed by I&W, Awake and Scenes.

His drum sound on ToT was absolutely fantastic. Each tom was tonally different, recognizable, clear and punchy. That snare was perfection. Maybe his best overall drum sound.

Images & Words, without a doubt.

As a bonus: I know that wasn't the question, but if we are talking drum performance...well, I&W would be in the running for that too, along with Awake, Falling Into Infinity and Train of Thought. I might throw in LTE and LTE2 as well  :)

But, yeah, as far as the main question is concerned - I&W is my favorite album, period, so that's easy!

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, closely followed by Bridge Across Forever and The Whirlwind. That being said, this is based on my feelings about the albums as a whole; I'm uncertain as to what I would consider my favorite solely based on Portnoy's performance.

Probably Transatlantic's Bridge Across Forever and The Whirlwind. After that, probably DT's SDOIT and 8VM.

Bridge Across Forever

Without overloading my brain, this one would be right up there.

Scenes From a Memory. Outside of Dream Theater though it’s Nightmare by Avenged Sevenfold.

For me, this is simply a question as to which pre-2010 DT album is my favorite and, as per the recent DT album rankings, that's 1. SFAM; 2. I&W; 3. SDOIT.

Scenes From A Memory is my desert island album, so that. The Portnoy discography would make for a fun top 25 rankings thread.

Close call for me between Awake (DT) and The Similitude of a Dream (Neal Morse Band), both of which are in my all-time top 5, but if forced to choose one, I'd probably go with Awake.

One is my favorite album, so that.  It's been a long time since I've really thought about a top 10 (or top whatever) of all time, but if I did one, most or all of my top 5 and more than half of my top 10 would have Mike Portnoy as drummer.

Off the top of my head, a lot of those would be:  One, SDOIT, SFAM, The Whirlwind, The Great Adventure, SMPT:e...

That sounds like a one-sided top 10 to be honest.

It is.  It's almost unfair that Portnoy has gotten to play on most of the 10 best albums of all time.

Scenes, followed closely by Awake and The Whirlwind.  Good call up there on Nightmare as well!

Similitude and The Great Adventure are fantastic back to back prog concept albums, among the best ever by anybody. Right up there with Scenes, and The Astonishing.

All his 10 albums with DT :P

Seriously, I think SFAM and The Whirlwind for me.
It sounds like, "ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk." Instead of the more pleasing kick drum sound of, "gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk."
