whats your alltime favorite MP beat in DT?
« on: June 24, 2011, 11:46:30 AM »
i was listening to random songs of DT....(long live shuffle)....
and well i sticked to DT songs....and i thought it was time to have some postitive MP posts ......
so what is your favorite MP drum beat???

I have to say he's got many, i think 6:00 will be a lot of peoples choices..but im voting for SOC
the intro beat....mean that gives me the chills every single time!!!it just totally fit's the riff, it's makes a pretty standard riff very powerfull, different ..and just aweome.  i think his best drumming is on ToT anyway...

so what's your favorite and why?

Lines in the Sand, 4:13-4:30. IMHO one of MP's best drumming.

I kind of like the whole drumming intro to The Great Debate. On his In Constant Motion DVD, the explanation for that opening seemed so complex to me and it really seemed like he put thought into how it would build up. I think it's a great tribal beat

Haunting and rocking at the same time. Absolutely mesmerising. And we'll probably get to see Mangini have a go on the next tour. Will be absolutely stellar.

The drumming on FII is good, but I find it's brought back by the terrible, terrible sound.

Yes.
I disagree and the drums sound beauteous to my ears.

The drum sound on FII has the most clarity and space of any of the albums.

I don't know much DT, but so far that beat in Octavarium where it switches between 4/4 and 7/8 is insane.

Octavarium definitely has some tasty beats

I've always liked Portnoy's ability to create really catchy beats, I don't think I know any other band who can actually make a drum beat stick in my head as well as DT

And this this THIS.

The Great Debate is a top 10 DT song for me, in part because of the amazing drums in there.

I always liked the fills right before the band enters in The Spirit Carries On. Those are just amazing. And the entire song actually has great drumming.

That's my favorite probably, but there are others I like a lot too:

Octavarium - Medicate section @ 8.43. Amazing groove laid down by JMX and MP. One of DTs finest moments.

UAGM Instrumental section - the part @ 4:09  :metal :metal  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

I always thought LTL had some awesome stuff. Like @ 2:20

The entire Take the Time too.

Also, a lot of what has already been mentioned.

I can't pick one, but my favourite MP songs to drum along to are:

Learning to Live - one his most challenging, considering there's very little formula to it. Lots of beat changes as well
The Great Debate - pure drumming ecstacy
Lines in the Sand - this is the funnest to drum to
Afterlife - A lot of Portnoy-isms that he stopped using can be found here
Another Won - Again, very little formula, and I think I have pretty much every single beat in this song memorized.
Finally Free - The ending
Metropolis - Another song I've have pretty much ingrained in my head. I've played along to this song probably 500 times by now. It never gets old.
