When Did You Discover DT? What Caught Your Attention?
« on: June 14, 2011, 10:01:28 PM »
It's always interesting to know when people discovered DT and what it was that caught their attention.  With DTs career spanning over 20 years and 10 studio albums plus all the extra goodies there is a lot to take away from their music and a lot of diversity among fans.

I discovered them when PMU hit MTV and because of that PMU is a very nostalgic song for me and probably in my top 10 DT songs.  I tend to lean towards liking their earlier stuff as well...I&W thru SFAM.

Systematic Chaos. Well, rather Rock Band in 2008. I heard Constant Motion and wanted to hear more. I too tend to listen to the earlier stuff and like it better despite being a newer fan

A friend showed me Octavarium the day it came out. Needless to say, I was in the nearest FYE within the hour buying the CD. The rest of their current discography at the time soon followed.

Around Systematic Chaos, and now I listen to them all the time. The length of the tracks surely caught my attention, because I was new to the Prog world, now these songs aren't near as long as I thought they were at first.

Around Systematic Chaos, through Rock Band. It wasn't until the past year or so that I got their entire discography, but that was as I phased out of my mainstream rock phase and started listening to a lot more prog and metal bands.

I first heard DT a bit after Octavarium came out, but I actually listened to I&W and ToT lol. Those albums hooked me pretty fast. I seem to remember some of the first tracks that stood out to me were Another Day, Surrounded and Stream of Consciousness. I also remember thinking that Metropolis was a really boring song lol. Oh how young and foolish of me... it's now one of my favourite songs. :)

I had played Panic Attack on Rock Band 2 and loved it because I had never heard anything quite like it but I ultimately dismissed it (no idea why). My friend then showed me the video to A Rite Of Passage and I fell in love. Live at Budokan was the true turning point to fanaticism.

Anyway, first time i heard Metropolis part 1. I said.. "This is the greatest thing i've ever heard." And to this day it's still my favorite song!

July 2009. BC&SL was being played in a store and I liked what I heard. I listened to more DT on Youtube and bought BC&SL and ACOS a short time after that. Been a fan ever since! :metal

1996 or 1997.  Just about when Falling Into Infinity came out.  I purchased all albums once I discovered them and remember waiting for SFAM to come out.  My happiness the day I purchased it was overwhelming.

Interesting to see how many new fans the band has picked up in the last 5-6 years.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

I'm found out about DT with Panic Attack/Dance of Eternity

My big brother used to tell me how awesome the Dance of Eternity is and he showed me live videos of it. I purchased the song online(the Live Scenes from New York version, I couldn't find the other one because I didn't know it was "Scene 7 pt.1: The Dance of Eternity"), even then, I didn't know anything about Dream Theater.
I later played Panic Attack in Rock Band. After listening to Panic Attack a countless amount of times in Youtube, I bought the album "Octavarium". The first 7 songs were cool, but when I heard the entire title song for the first time, I was amazed, it's the first song to ever give me goosebumps and it opened my mind to a whole new world of music
Now, Octavarium is one of my least favorite DT albums and I have all of the DT discography. I pity all my Green Day-listening friends, they don't know what it's like to have goosebumps and tears when listening to music.  ;D

Discovered them by reputation on other music forums when I was getting into metal in 2006-2007. Youtubed Erotomania, was fascinated, especially by MP's drumming. Then I found Ocatavrium: :omg: --> :heart --> :metal. Gobbled up most of their albums quickly, and by then experienced my first new release in SC.

my buddy saw Score on Vh1 before it was released... and it took the time between Score and (right after the release of ) SC for me to be hooked...

The actually songs that got me hooked were The Mirror, Peruvian Skies (was going through a Metallica and Pink floyd phases... so it hit me hard...) and ACOS (watched it on youtube for hours) and Constant Motion
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I think it was in 2004, when i listened to As I Am at the radio and i really liked it. I forgot it for a while, then my guitar teacher told me i should check DT out, so i bought TOT, and since then they became one of my favorite bands.

My Dad was playing I&W in the car in th early 2000's, it was in a time where I had no real musical focus or a 'favourite' band so to speak. I&W floored me, I played it constantly and bought SFAM and the LSFNY DVD in the following days, also playing them constantly. Soon after their entire discography followed, and to this day I still have my daily dose of DT  ;D

First post!  I remember seeing the Pull Me Under video on MTV (Headbanger's Ball I think).  Not too long after that I saw Images and Words in the new release rack at a local music store.  The clerk there told me that it was an awesome album so I bought it.  They've been my favorite band ever since.

The musicianship and the melodies are what hooked me.  I was really into Queensryche at the time and thought DT really took what they did to the next level.

WDADU for me.

I still rank it in DT's top 3 for me.
Images.
WDADU.
Awake.

Mike's drumming is so raw on that disc..it's a sound I wished he'd never refined.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

SC.. I borrowed the album from a friend, and it blew me away. The instruments were out of this world. I never liked keyboards in metal, suddenly I loved it. The vocals were pretty cool, until i heard the "Angels fall, all for you, heretic
Demon heart bleed for us" pat of ITPOE pt.2. That really blew my away. Imagine how I felt when I listened to AH/The killing hand at marquee for the first time!

I was introduced to Dream Theater by a friend who had picked up 6DOIT, it was spring of 2002 and I was immediately hooked just after hearing The Glass Prison.  I went to the mall that day to buy that album.  The store didn't have it in at the time, so I waited till the following week to get it.  But in the mean time I bought Live Scenes and was amazed.  Soon after I picked up their entire back catalog and never looked back since!

Sort of Pull Me Under, sort of Awake.

I heard Pull Me Under on the radio a bunch of times and loved it, even taped it off the radio, but had no idea who did the song because the DJs never said, and this was long before you could type a lyrical snippet into Google and know who did a song.  I didn't actually get introduced to the band until 1997 when a friend made me listen to Awake.  I got kind of obsessed with that album, she played me Images and Words, and I finally realized who Pull Me Under was by.   :lol

After ACOS came out. I had seen their name in metal magazines, guitar catalogs etc. This one day I was in a guitar store and they were playing Rock Discipline. I was stunned...I bought ACOS, and then the other albums soon thereafter.

Shortly after Octavarium came out, and it intrigued the fuck out of me (even though Images and Awake were my two first ones)
