While I know they can do amazing things in short amounts of time, I'd hardly call knocking the basics of an epic out in 3 days "taking their time". Of course there will be lots of parts added and refining and all that, but even at a slower than normal pace they still write way faster than a typical band.

If they actually made TA their main focus I have no doubt they could average more than 1 full-length or better album a year, which is saying something for today.

I'd be happy with DWtD type stuff as it is, of course, the best them of TA songs.

This. Old question: Duel or Stranger?

  Old question: Duel or Stranger?

I usually find whichever one I am listening to at that very moment to be the better one.  Since I am listening to neither at the moment, I will just say that All of the Above is still their best song.

:lol

I like the fact that the Whiteboard has three lists - Roine, Pete and Neal, and then a different list on the right that isn't headed Mike. So possibly it's a listing of the ideas/demos they've brought, with the right maybe being other things they've jammed/come up with in the studio.

Isn't the last column titled "Here's what we're really gonna do"?  Which, by default, is Mike's column?   :lol

The white board is where Mike is recommending the points where, in the new epic they were working on, each of the others needs to sing "Are you motherfuckers feeling it?"

 :P

And the answer to the Duel/Stranger debate always is All Of The Above. Always the best them.

From MP: The TA4 Sessions went splendidly fantastic! (I think I've been hanging around Pete too much these past weeks...haha!) I won't disclose any details, but I will say the album is about 75 mins long and has 5 songs (2 Epics & 3 "normal" length) and we also recorded 8 Covers for a Bonus Disc as well! Release is expected for the beginning of 2014...more info to come later in the year...

There'll be Beatles (there has to be), maybe another Floyd song, and I'm guessing bands like Camel, Yes, King Crimson, Jetro Tull or even Zappa. Or what about Egg? I guess the covers disc will be great!

And as far as the normal album goes: I'm sure I'll be blown away, I'm looking forward to the 'normal length' songs as well (btw, what ís normal length? 5-6 minutes or somewhere between 4 and 12?), but of course the epics are the ones I'm really looking forward to.

Of course Portnoy is obsessed with covers.  But the band as a whole has been into the covers thing since day 1.  They had a cover on SMPTe.  Suite Charlotte Pike was modeled after Abbey Road, and incorporated half of Abbey Road on the tour.  They've covered Hogweed and Shine On You Crazy Diamond live.  And The Whirlwind bonus disk had 4 covers.  So I'm actually not surprised that they have more covers coming out with this one.

Any musician will tell you that it's great getting together with friends and playing songs that everyone knows.  I've never been in a band that did a lot of originals, and certainly never an actual recording band, but I'm sure the joy playing good songs with your friends doesn't go away just because you've got your own material.

Whether or not you play a lot of these songs in concert, or put them on your albums, is another matter.  But as bonus material, sure.  A disc of originals and a disc of covers.  More Transatlantic.

2 Epics and 3 shorter songs. How much do you all want to bet that the epics will book end the album? :lol As cliche as that usually is, I'm willing to be bet good money that's how the track list will come out (especially with their track records, as a band together and in their respective bands). I mean, epics make good openers, and a great closers, so we'll see.

As for the shorter songs, I'd say if the epics are anywhere between 25-30 minutes, that's about 50-60 minutes of music right there, leaving at MOST 25 minutes left for 3 songs. Average that out to about 8 minutes a song, so the 'shorter' songs could be 4 minutes...or 12, but 8 on average.

And EIGHT covers?! AWESOME :tup More power to them. It'll be an album in itself! And considering they may cover PROG songs, the bonus disc could be at least 50-60 minutes long!

I'm going to go with:
1.  Middle-length "shorter" song to open and set the stage
2.  Shorter epic
3.  Longest "shorter" song, because even if it is around 12 minutes, it will feel short right after a big epic
4.  Shortest "shorter" song, because this is the spot where the shortest song always goes
5.  Big epic closer
