Here's another old one that I'm "resurrecting:"
Which of their songs that they haven't played for a long time would you like for them to bring back, either now or on the next tour?
-
Eve.
-
Stream of Consciousness, Only a Matter of Time, New Millennium and Afterlife
-
Eve.
Is overrated.
The Glass Prison.
-
Your posts are overrated.
-
Children, PLEASE!
Let's not fight over this.
I think Eve would be a good intro tape.
-
Your posts are overrated.
That's ridiculous. My posts aren't rated at all.
-
Because they're unbel-eve-ably wrong!!
-
Your mom.
-
Because they're unbel-eve-ably wrong!!
Rumborak is a great guy.
Hmmm, I guess you're right.
-
Light Fuse and Get Away, Only a Matter of Time, The Killing Hand, Take the Time, You Not Me, Anna Lee, Misunderstood, Constant Motion, In the Presence of Enemies (even though I doubt we will ever hear that live again)
-
Not necessarily my all time favorites, but these are songs I would quite like to see a return with the current lineup:
- Any When Dream and Day Unite stuff will probably get me excited
- Prophets of War (wanna see what they'd do with the spoken section)
- A Nightmare to Remember (similar to above example except curious what they'd do with growl section)
- Burning my Soul (Bring it back with samples but with the '96 arrangement)
- Home
- Honor Thy Father
- Panic Attack
- Constant Motion (Curious how they'd deal with the vocal trade offs as JLB couldn't exactly do it all himself)
- A Rite of Passage
Here's a few that I'd like to see more than others though
- The Glass Prison
- In the Name of God
- New Millennium
- In The Presence of Enemies/Octavarium/The Count of Tuscany (I'd settle for any one of these 'epics' and I lumped them together because I couldn't possibly expect all of them so take your pick :xbones)
Oh, and I don't know if this counts because it's not like it's too long since we've heard them as we've NEVER heard a few songs. So anything they haven't played before, personally I'd actually be pretty stoked if they played stuff like Don't Look Past Me/The Best of Times/You or Me. Finally, bring back doing the occasional cover. Not at the cost of too much DT material, but I enjoy the more inspired covers and DT have always been great at covering other band's music.
-
I say this every time, but I'd kill to see Don't Look Past Me
-
Octavarium and A Change of Seasons. These are their two greatest songs and neither has been played since 2006 (A Change of Seasons since 2004). I know both would be well received and could be used as an encore. Other than that, I would love to hear Panic Attack, The Count of Tuscany, and Constant Motion live.
-
Damn yeah, Octavarium would be awesome.
-
Any song I haven't seen live yet... this includes:
Status Seeker, The Killing Hand, The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun, Only a Matter of Time
You Not Me, Burning My Soul, Hell's Kitchen, Take Away My Pain, Anna Lee
Regression, Through Her Eyes
The Great Debate, Disappear
Repentance, The Best of Times, Far From Heaven
The Bigger Picture, Behind the Veil, Surrender to Reason
-
The. Glass. PRISON.
I've only seen this tour live, so my list includes:
Songs they haven't played in a long time:
Only A Matter of Time
Lines in the Sand
Just Let Me Breathe
Home
Blind Faith
Misunderstood
Disappear
Six Degrees
This Dying Soul
Honor Thy Father
Vacant
In the Name of God
Panic Attack
Octavarium
In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1
Constant Motion
The Bigger Picture
Behind the Veil
Surrender to Reason
Songs I just want to see live:
Metropolis
Under A Glass Moon
Learning to Live
Caught in a Web
The Spirit Carries On
The Great Debate
As I Am
Root of All Evil
These Walls
The Count of Tuscany
Bridges in the Sky
-
DT likes to bring back old songs lately, so the best part of this thread is that some of these are pretty likely. I'm really hoping that Octavarium, for example, is brought back next tour. It'll be its tenth anniversary next year and the band has mentioned wanting to bring it back, so I could see it happening.
Eve would be cool as well, I wonder if they'd actually do it. As far as non-album songs go, I'd LOVE to see Raise the Knife and Don't Look Past Me as well.
The Glass Prison definitely. I would love to see it played back to back with TSF.
Stream Of Consciousness for sure, has it even been played since the ToT tour?
Anna Lee would also be cool and probably one the guys would be up for. Like Space Dye Vest, it seems like the only reason they weren't playing that was because MP didn't think it was appropriate.
-
The Glass Prison
Stream of Consciousness
About to Crash + Reprise
Erotomania
New Millennium
Hells Kitchen + Lines in the Sand
Anna Lee
Panic Attack
-
Eve.
Is overrated.
The Glass Prison.
For once, I'm backing the Zook! It is unbelievable to me that they overlooked TGP yet again.
Not at all interested in hearing the mid 1990s drama telemovie soundtrack known as Eve.
-
I'm going to agree with those that said SoC. I was really happy to see DoE live this time around so one of their other great instrumentals would be awesome.
I would really be curious to hear the reaction to Raw Dog  I know it doesn't get much love here but I think we might be surprised . . . maybe not . . . who knows.
-
I would really be curious to hear the reaction to Raw Dog  I know it doesn't get much love here but I think we might be surprised . . . maybe not . . . who knows.
Raw Dog would fucking KILL live, imo. I'm one of the seemingly few who actually like the song, and a heavy instrumental like that would be fun as hell live.
I think for the next tour, if they don't wait until the following year to start again (hell, even if they do), since they don't have any albums celebrating a significant anniversary in 2015, they should absolutely have Octavarium as the encore for it's 10th anniversary. It's a song almost every non-casual DT fan loves and is one a lot asking for. Same with TGP. It's been almost 10 goddamn years since either have been played. I think their next tour should focus on songs they never play anymore, like how this tour there's only 2 songs from ADToE's touring cycle.
-
ACOS
Eve
Speak to Me
anything from WDADU
I'd also love to see them premiere Don't Look Past Me!
-
Hell's Kitchen.
-

I honestly think that the fans would love it. Even those who don't like the song would at least applaud the band for having the balls to actually play it. I just listened to the song for the first time and it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be (it's certainly better than Hells Kitchen). Who knows? It might work live.
-
The Killing Hand. Knowing that James's voice is amazing now they should play it live.
-
Eve.
This above all others.
Next would be Hell's Kitchen.
And yeah, The Glass Prison, and Octavarium.
-
Octavarium.
Too long since we've head it in fully live.
-
Where are you now? :D
-
Hell's Kitchen
Misunderstood
The Glass Prison
About to Crash (Reprise) / Losing Time
-
Eve - 16 years
Hell's Kitchen - 16 years
Learning To Live - 3 years
The Killing Hand - 10 years
Disappear - 10 years
Don't Loop Past Me - ∞ years
Cover My Eyes - 12 years
-
Next year is A Change of Seasons' 20th, it'll have been 11 years since they've played it as opposed to nine, and it's an all around superior song to Octavarium. Eve is one of the best songs they've ever put out, and in what fucking universe is Raw Dog superior to Hell's Kitchen?
TL;DR this thread is fail.
-
Yeah, with them celebrating the anniversaries with such enthusiasm this year, ACOS seems like the safest bet for next year. Other than that, TGP into Blind Faith and I'll be a happy camper. Maybe Take the Time in the encore.
-
in what fucking universe is Raw Dog superior to Hell's Kitchen?
I think that is just more proof that no matter how crazy an opinion about DT might sound to some of us, there is a DT fan out there somewhere who thinks it. :lol :lol
-
I have to agree with people who said Octavarium and Stream of Consciousness. I also would like to see full ITPOE live, but as it doesn't get a lot of love over the whole DT fanbase, I doubt it will ever happen again. Certainly not in my country. :D
-

I think they need to play it at least once. Com'on it would be great live. Let the masses vote . . .
-
Votes: Aye!

Dude, you're quoting my DTF theorem!! :omg:
-
Hell's Kitchen is a beautiful, relaxing, chill out piece of atmospheric bliss.
-
Glass Prison, Status Seeker, A Change of Seasons
-
I would be SHOCKED if we ever heard Status Seeker again.
-
I would be SHOCKED if we ever heard Status Seeker again.
I would be equal parts shocked and disappointed.

The Bigger Picture
Behind the Veil
Surrender to Reason
This too.
I'm still trying to figure why they didn't want to play the cool songs of the selftitled
-
Because they wanted to make a triumphant return to the Evening with format by creating the best show they could to appease the old fans and squash the Mangini naysayers
-
Another Won
-
The Glass Prison.
Hell's Kitchen.
Yes. Back to back :metal

Based on the feedback so far, I've put together an imaginary set list for the second leg of the current tour. It's not going to be perfect for everyone, including me, but sometimes you have to compromise. I mostly stayed with songs that are getting a lot of "requests" on here, but also picked a few just for me.
Intro tape will be Eve.
Set One:
1) Surrender to Reason
2) This Is the Life
Most of the rest of the songs are in chronological order, which I know is not to everyone's liking, but it's my preference:
3) The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun-Other than the "Reunite" DVD, I don't know HOW long it's been since they've played this song.
4) Learning to Live-Seems to be the most requested "Images" song.
5) Space-Dye Vest-I know this song is already part of the "Ride" tour, but I thought it would be a good one for them to relax on between some of the more intense songs.
6) Hell's Kitchen-A lot of requests for this one, and I don't know if they've ever played the entire thing live before.
7) One Last Time-A personal fave, and a good segue from #6.
8) About to Crash/About to Crash (Reprise)
9) In the Name of God-I'm probably creating a lot of controversy with this one, because even though a lot of people have listed it here, a lot of others have said they HATE this song. I don't, so there we are.
10) Don't Look Past Me-I listened to this song a couple of times on YouTube, and my own personal reaction was pretty much "meh," but who knows? Maybe the current version of the band can make it sound better.
11) Along for the Ride-I think it's one of their better ballads, and same tour/same song.
Intermission: More funny YouTube videos
Set Two:
1) Octavarium-Tons of requests for this one, and I know a lot of people will want at least one epic, so here it is.
2) Constant Motion-I think James could sing both parts, or maybe John P. could sing Mike P.'s parts.
3) Enigma Machine-Just to satisfy the people who want to hear more instrumental jams.
4) The Count of Tuscany-Another one that gets requests up the ying-yang.
5) Bridges in the Sky-A lot of people would probably prefer that this be the opener, but why not do something different? Like putting it here?
6) Behind the Veil.-Close with another new song.
Encore:
The Glass Prison-Again, multiple requests, so hopefully it would be a satisfying conclusion to a mostly satisfying show.
Outro tape: The INSTRUMENTAL version of Wither. I know it's kind of sad-sounding, but it's still a fine piece of music.
-
Learning to Live is on Images and Words.
I can imagine what it'd sound like on WDADU though...
"whoaoaoa
whoaoaoa
whoaoaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
-
Thank you for pointing that out. I went back and corrected it...
...What was I thinking?
Charlie sounded fine on most of "Dream and Day" but I don't think I would want to hear him singing any of the songs that came along since.
As an example: he should NOT have been allowed to sing "To live Forever" (at least not without help from James) on the "reunite" DVD.
-

I was under the impression that To Live Forever was written while Charlie was still in the band...at least from what the band said during the audio commentary for the 5YIALT DVD. I believe that Charlie even said in an interview that it was his favorite DT song.
-
Right.
But there is also a studio version, as well as several live versions of James singing it, and I thought he sounded MUCH better.
-
ACOS
Eve
Speak to Me
anything from WDADU
I'd also love to see them premiere Don't Look Past Me!
This. I love ACOS & WDADU. It would be great to see them do don't look past me, then they would have performed every song live at least once ( I think)
-
The Best of Times would still be missing.
-
Right.
But there is also a studio version, as well as several live versions of James singing it, and I thought he sounded MUCH better.
He did. But the point of that night was them performing songs that were written while Charlie was in the band.

Very good list of songs, but that set list construction is pretty bad. Learning to Live in the middle of a set? Behind the Veil ending the second set? Ending the first set with a ballad?
Rearrange all of those songs big time and it'd be a good set list.
-
Yeah. Taking that list, I'd do something like this:
1. The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun
2. This Is the Life
3. Hell's Kitchen
4. One Last Time
5. Surrender to Reason
6. About to Crash/About to Crash (Reprise)
7. Along for the Ride
8. Don't Look Past Me
9. Space-Dye Vest
10. In the Name of God
11. Learning to Live
--- intermission ---
1. Bridges in the Sky
2. Constant Motion
3. Enigma Machine
4. Behind the Veil
5. The Count of Tuscany
6. Octavarium
--- encore ---
The Glass Prison
Even with just shifting within the sets, you can get a decent set. Even though it contains Octavarium.
-
He did. But the point of that night was them performing songs that were written while Charlie was in the band.
Then what they should have done was either to have Charlie sing some of the "Dream and Day" songs by himself-like either the first or second half-or have him AND james sing ALL of the songs together.
My point was just that Charlie singing "To Live Forever" by himself didn't sound too good.
But maybe that's just because I'm more used to James's version.
-

NO FUCKING WAY!!!
Sorry, but I think that is the best version of the song.
-
It's okay.
It's just a matter of opinion.
-
Because they wanted to make a triumphant return to the Evening with format by creating the best show they could to appease the old fans and squash the Mangini naysayers
So, they succed in that by playing some of the crappy song of the new album?
-
Regardless of your opinion of the new material, of course they would include it. It's the album they are touring for.
-
I think they were going for songs that were more high energy and potential concert favorites. Gotta have the opener of course, then the obvious single, the instrumental, the big singalong chorus, and the epic. It's fairly obvious why they chose the songs that they did.
-
Regardless of your opinion of the new material, of course they would include it. It's the album they are touring for.
I like the new album. I just don't get why they play the weakest songs of the album instead of the most praised by the fans like behind the veil and the bigger picture.
-
Most praised by fans or most praised by you?
I prefer every song that got played to Behind the Veil personally.
-
The Killing Hand, dammit!
-
Wither,
Vacant,
ANNA LEE!!!!
-
Hell's Kitchen.
So much this!!!
-
Most praised by fans or most praised by you?
I prefer every song that got played to Behind the Veil personally.
It's based on what I saw here ;D Not a big fan of Behind the veil myself. Maybe i'm wrong, sorry.
-
Very good list of songs, but that set list construction is pretty bad. Learning to Live in the middle of a set? Behind the Veil ending the second set? Ending the first set with a ballad?
Rearrange all of those songs big time and it'd be a good set list.
I understand your concerns, Kev.
But I DID say at the beginning that putting most of the songs in chronological order was MY personal preference.
I can't speak for how the BAND would feel about doing it my way, but I think most of the audience would love to hear those songs-or MOST of them, anyway-in pretty much any order.
I wanted to spread the new songs out instead of cramming all of them into either the first set, or at the very end of the show.
Since it would still be a part of the "Ride" tour, I thought that the end of the first set would be a good place for the song. Also, it would calm things down a bit, so the the audience wouldn't be so "pumped" going into the break. Instead, they would hopefully be a little more relaxed.
And what's WRONG with ending the second set with "Veil?" If you listen to the song, especially the coda, I think it makes a DAMN fine conclusion to the show! And I like the idea of ending the show (Except for the encore) with a new song.
I don't understand why so many people think that certain songs ALWAYS have to have a certain place in the order of things! Why not shake it UP a little? Do something different? I thought that was what made us DREAM THEATER fans to begin with: The fact that we don't always like "normal!"
So I'm sorry if my arrangement for my imaginary show wasn't to your taste, but like I said: It's MY personal preference!
-
Hell's Kitchen.
So much this!!!
Yeah, agreed. :tup
Also, I would've been down for some ACOS or 8VM instead of Illumination Theory when I saw them back in April.
-
April what?
I might have preferred something other than "IT" as well. I would liked to have heard it a few more times and get used to it, and get to "know" it a little better before hearing it live.
Also I don't think they should PLAY it live without a real orchestra. or just leave that part of it out.
-
April 20th.
-
Right on, Zook!
You and I were at the same show.
What did you think?
Did you see the "Dramatic" show there as well? I heard there were a lot of technical problems at that one.
-
I was there, but I don't remember any technical problems. Both shows were great. The highlight for me would be when James and I forgot the same section of Scarred :lol
-
April 20th.
Yep, Mesa Arts Center. :tup
-
So what part of Phx. Metro is "Big Haboob Country?"
-

So what part of Phx. Metro is "Big Haboob Country?"
The entire Phoenix valley. It happens at least once a year during monsoon season. We got this one a couple months ago.

-
Wow!
I can't believe I forgot about that.
2011.
I don't really remember HEARING about a haboob before that time.
I was even out in it for a little while.
For those who don't live in a climate like this, or just don't know: a haboob is a GIGANTIC dust storm.
Not nice to experience.
-
Good god. I just saw a video of that. I'd be terrified of losing electric lights in one of those.
-
Hey, gais:
Eve is overrated.
*Takes cover*
Other than that, I know that my chances of hearing Don't Look Past Me live are slim to none... but hey, a man can dream.
-
For once, I'm backing the Zook! It is unbelievable to me that they overlooked TGP yet again.
Not at all interested in hearing the mid 1990s drama telemovie soundtrack known as Eve.
They need to bring TGP out for the next tour. They've got no choice as far as I'm concerned. It's time. I don't care about Eve, I've resigned to never hearing Hell's Kitchen live, I never liked The Killing Hand, and I have no idea why The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun and Raw Dog were mentioned here, but TGP is obligatory on the tour for DT13.
-
Good god. I just saw a video of that. I'd be terrified of losing electric lights in one of those.
It's not that bad if you keep your windows and doors closed.
There CAN be SOME wind damage, but it's not nearly as bad as a hurricane.
Also, you don't have to worry about drowning or any kind of water damage.
The worst part of it is how it affects your respiratory system, especially if you have allergies.
Which I can testify to.
-
Yeah. Taking that list, I'd do something like this:
1. The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun
2. This Is the Life
3. Hell's Kitchen
4. One Last Time
5. Surrender to Reason
6. About to Crash/About to Crash (Reprise)
7. Along for the Ride
8. Don't Look Past Me
9. Space-Dye Vest
10. In the Name of God
11. Learning to Live
--- intermission ---
1. Bridges in the Sky
2. Constant Motion
3. Enigma Machine
4. Behind the Veil
5. The Count of Tuscany
6. Octavarium
--- encore ---
The Glass Prison
Even with just shifting within the sets, you can get a decent set. Even though it contains Octavarium.
I want to begin by apologizing to Kev.
I know I was a little overzealous in defending my idea for a set list that would contain a lot of songs that had gotten a lot of "votes" on here. Sorry about that.
I just listened to "Raw Dog" all the way through for the first time a few minutes ago. Not bad, but I prefer mine breaded and deep-fried.
But seriously, they could have omitted "The Bigger Picture" from "12" and substituted this track, and I think the album would have been just as good, or better.
I think Scorpion's idea for a "set list order" is just as good as mine, but as I have previously pointed out, I don't think the songs always HAVE to be in a certain order. I like the idea of shaking things up a little. Also, I like the idea of starting with a couple of new songs, so when James makes the announcement-hopefully after the second song-that they are "going to be playing songs from the band's entire history" he won't be lying, because they won't have PLAYED any of the old songs yet!
I know Theseoafs said he doesn't like "The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun" but like I said, I picked some songs just for me. I think it's musically as good as anything they've ever done.
Also, I just listened to "Don't Look Past Me" again. Still not impressed.
...OOOPS! Sorry! I forgot to say at least one thing earlier: I don't know how we could please everybody when it comes to "the epic!" Some people want "Illumination Theory," some people want "Octavarium" and some people want ACoS! Maybe they should do a MEDLEY of ALL of their epics! THAT would please AND displease everybody all at the SAME TIME! Can't beat THAT!!!

Last time they did an epic medley it sucked big time. I'm alright with medleys if done well, but that SC tour medley was very sloppily put together. I don't think bits of large pieces like that should be pasted together like that.

I wasn't really being serious. I was saying what I said in response to the fact that no matter which of those songs were selected, it would get some (probably a large number) of hateful responses.

Right on, Zook!
You and I were at the same show.
What did you think?
Did you see the "Dramatic" show there as well? I heard there were a lot of technical problems at that one.
I saw the Dramatic show there. Was stationed at Fort Huachuca at the time, so it was a rough round trip, but well worth it. Couldn't make either Mesa or any of the California shows this time.

I would love to see them jam. Just a big crazy improv section.
Apart from that: I had this idea that they could use the track numbers from each album to build the set list, and rotate every night. Track 1 from each album, then track 2 the next night, etc and so forth. Then on albums with less songs, start over once you've played them all, which would start to mix things up.
It would never happen, but that would be an event.

I'd love to Don't Look Past Me live, any reason why they've never play it?
The Glass Prison + This Dying Soul combo (Would be an awesome 2nd set opener)
Hell's Kitchen + Lines in the Sand combo
The Killing Hand
Through Her Eyes (I think I'm the only one who'd want to hear it lol, not sure how they'd put it in the set though)
Anna Lee
A Change of Seasons
Take the Time
ACOS + TtT encore would make me incredibly happy.

IIRC, they haven't played DLPM because of the difficulty involved with the many vocal lines, something that none of the backing vocalists felt comfortable with at the time. Shame, I really like the song, and it's not like they don't use a ton of backing tracks nowadays anyway.

A few I'd love to see that I haven't already and that haven't been played in 5 years or more (I think):
Octavarium
In the Name of God
In the Presence of Enemies
A Change of Seasons
The Glass Prison
Sacrificed Sons
The Ministry of Lost Souls
Lines in the Sand
