[Shadow Ninja 2.0]

Seems like guessing has died down, so I've revealed everything. I've written some first impressions and will post them later tonight or tomorrow. I don't know that I'll do first impressions every round; it really depends on whether I feel like the stuff I've jotted down is interesting enough while also being possible to guess. We'll see!

We should be on track to get results on Sunday/Monday.

OK, here are some first impressions. They might be about the submission as a whole, a particular song, or just a bit that stuck out to me. They're meant to be kind of surface level! (is anyone buying my excuses?) Some impressions apply to more than one submission. Two submissions have two different first impressions. Is this a good idea? No. But you can't stop me. No one can.

[1] I've never heard punky math rock before but now it seems like a no-brainer.

[2] The bluesy parts I like, the near-atonal ones I'm unsure of.

[3] This is technically impressive but doesn't seem melodic at all. I feel like it might be a grower, though.

[4], [5] This is exactly what I expected from you. [TAC - Fires in the Distance]

[6] This reminds me of Xandria and Unleash the Archers, for different reasons.

[7] Buckethead vibes.

[8] This isn't what I expected from you. [King Puppies and the Acid Guppies - Monica Heldal]

[9], [10] This is complete chaos. [Crow - Hakushi Hasegawa]

[11] The riffs are good, the harsh vocals are kind of bad but I like them anyway. [Buddyhunter1 - Chapel of Disease]

[12], [13] I like the spacier instrumental bits

[14] It's quirky, but is it too quirky?

[15], [16] At last. Shadow Ninja music.

[17] The vocal performance is meant to be the centerpiece here, but I'm not sure it's strong enough.

It's not 15/16, although I commend you on being the first one to (sort of) try claiming it. Your impression seems pretty clear to me, but that's unsurprising since it originated in my head.

In fairness you've not been in my last couple of roulettes but either I've gotten over whatever was putting me off power metal a few years ago or people have got better at hitting my tastes with it, because power metal (and adjacent styles) generally did pretty well in my latest one! Even the utter cheese-fest that is Fellowship.

The fun part of that impression is that I'd had very similar feelings about two totally different styles. The lesson here is that lots of things can potentially be 'Shadow Ninja music.'
