The marital thread got me thinking about the biggest household divide - the one between people whose first instinct is to get up and grab something they need, and the people whose first instinct is to ask someone else to quickly get them something.
I am a person in group A who grew up with people in group B and frankly it was the most annoying thing in my childhood home. If I'm sick and good enough to stand, I'll get up and make myself a cup of tea. If someone's just a bit closer to a plate I need, and not significantly closer, I'll get up and get it myself. If I need the remote, I'll look for it myself. Normal person behavior.
My brother and sister will literally ask you to pick up things all day
They'll only drink water when someone else is going to the kitchen to pour some for themselves, they'll only drink tea when someone else is making a cup, they'll ask you to pick something up for them even if you're further away. When I'm asked to do something like that I'll automatically think "oh they must
really need me to get that thing for them", get up, bring it, and then realize that's just how I think! They're just asking out of laziness and they're lucky enough to live with a sucker like me! When I asked them to explain their train of thought, it goes like this: I can't be bothered to get up. You will get up at some point. If I ask you and you say yes, then it means it doesn't bother you, so yay, we're both happy! When you say no, well, that's when I'll get up and get it myself. isn't it great how you're always conveniently getting up to get something I just remembered I really need, smooooch, love you sis!
So. Freaking. Annoying. And then it transfers outside the house as well! If I go out shopping suddenly they remember they really need something, they wanted to go out and get it, but they've been sooooo busy/sick and can I please just pick it up on the way?
Last year I literally flew to Serbia like five days before a family wedding and my sister, who had a full month to get ready and get what she needs, suddenly decided she needed to switch some part of her outfit so she needed one more piece and she was just so busy (or sick or both I can't even keep up), so I went to the mall and picked it up for her, laughing all the way. You think some things will change when you move out, and life will go on without you, but some things stay the same I guess
