I do agree, though, his lyrics were pretty good on Awake.
Pretty good? I'd say they are very good. "Voices" is easily one of the best lyrical DT songs to date.
Well, yeah... which is why I only went with Post-SFAM albums on here. I knew
Awake would probably get most of the votes. My idea for this was just to see what people liked as far as his lyrics in the last half of the band's career, the last decade or so. And by thinking about his writing and analyzing it, it might help us realize where he may be going in the future with his writing.
BC&SL was very based on real life things - an accident in his childhood, a run-in with a kooky count, experiencing writer's block, and reading a wikipedia article on cults. That was a stark contrast to his fiction-based lyrics on SC, all four of which have had their origins traced back to existing fiction. Before that, 8VM seemed to be based on emotions, a bit akin to his earlier lyrics like "Innocence Faded" and "Hollow Years" - things about inner contemplation and dealing with life's problems/emotional impacts. Prior to that, TOT was a bit of a mixed bag, with two personal lyrics and one based on something a bit more political/religious/news-related, sort of like the mixed bag that was on SDOIT, containing a sort of political lyric in "The Great Debate", while also containing a sort of personal lyric in "Misunderstood".
It seems to me his lyrics have become more narrative over time, as is evidenced by his lyrical contributions over the last two albums. Does anyone else think he'll continue the narrative-approach? Or will he move on to something different with the next album?
