Wasn't too impressed with the two new releases I've managed to check out today. The rest of the day was pretty good though.

Huh, do I deduce you didn't like the new Insomnium? I posted my initial thoughts about it on the band's thread. First impressions are VERY good for me.

I wasn't particularly sold on any of the singles and nothing grabbed me on first listen to the album. I'll give it few spins though.

I don't know the band at all, and I had read some praise on the interwebz...there is a lot to digest, and I feel like there is potential, but it didn't truly grab me. I liked the more atmospheric, Floyd-ish parts better than the aggressive stuff. A little too djenty for my taste, I guess and sometimes it felt a bit disjointed. I'll probably revisit, though.

As for CoB's debut...well, it might sound a little rougher than what came after, but some days it's still my favorite of theirs. Ferocious and melodic, brings back good memories.

I'm not a huge fan of Hypno5e, but Train of Naught used to post a lot about them, and we had a huge crossover in tastes so I'll always at least check out new releases. I agree that there's a lot to digest, so I'll go back to it in like a week or so.

Something Wild is far from their best, but I also like it way more than anything since Are You Dead Yet? It's another one of those albums where it's crazy to think how young these guys were when they recorded it! Alexi was taken far too young, and his music will always be a huge part of my journey. RIP.

The Karelian Isthmus is really overlooked.  Nothing else really like it, a rather different beast from everything later.

Souldrainer - Departure

Been really enjoying this one. It came out late last year (December, I think) and it's a real hefty slab of (atmospheric?) death metal from Sweden. The pace is mostly mid-tempo and it reminds me of songs from Abducted-era Hypocrisy. This thing can be HEAVY (I mean, check out the opener, Council of Five...that bass!), and only occasionally does the tempo pick up (e.g. Paint the World in Lies). I like how the album is kind of like a journey that gets more and more sad and melancholic as it progresses, culminating with the closer (End of the World). Good stuff!
