I'm guessing they're screens. Which is pretty bitchin' if you think about it.
"Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are God. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realize that, if you provide them with food and water and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are God.” — Christopher Hitchens

Those map fragments in the background...are those screens?

They're animated screens that keep highlighting various locations.

Those are screens.  They've said in new interviews that they are doing video mapping.  Also looks like there are panels in the very front on each side that don't have anything assigned to them right now.

Interesting that JP's and JM's rigs are so far back from the front of the stage.  Not sure whether to make anything of it, but it is not typical of their setup, and may imply that there will be action taking place near the front of the stage in front of them?

That was my thought too. Looking at the picture that was taken from the balcony really shows how much stage is left in from of them. Also surprised as to how empty the stage it too. Now I'm really interested. Maybe they want the main focal point to be on the video screens instead of them.

Looks like there is space up front for acting and no keytar in Jordan's space. Is it possible DT hired a bunch of actors to play out scenes from the story?

People on Facebook are saying 'no photos or video' is being strictly enforced. Keep checking Instagram for #DreamTheater. I'm sure stuff is going to surface.

Intermission.

Show has been awesome so far.
James is a little rusty, give it a few shows and he will be on top form. The other guys are tight. Especially Mangini.
The video screens are amazing. Keep getting motionsickness on some of them haha.
The end of A New Beginning was a slightly extended solo with Mangini doing his cross arms stuff.
The NOMAC tracks are extended and actually work really well!!

Edit: Also the audience has stayed all seated. Oh and security are hot on the no photos or videos.

Oh one more thing my seat directly in front of Richard and Raymond from Haken

from a few different people on the Voices UK (ex fanclub) group on Facebook:

Video presentation is good, but missed opportunity in conveying the story. If you don't know what it's about going in, you won't coming out.

Some of what is on the screens is pretty cringeworthy. I was expecting a lot more to be honest.

Well... Fire the fucking sound guy. Can't hear the vocals or lead guitar at all. No problem hearing all the backing tapes though

Lead guitar is sucking hard in royal circle.

Funnily enough I just passed him in the gents, it's the same guy who's been doing it for years. Reckon it's more the venue being difficult to mix to, like the Albert Hall. It's designed for orchestras, not rock bands!

Also, why are they so far back? It's not a festival! (unless for sight lines at back...)

So what was all that "Dress rehearsal" thing about? and James posting on FB that he couldn't wait to bring the wardrobe he received on stage... they all look in normal "DT stage clothes" as always.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

I don't know what route they could go to make you fully understand the story unless they had a CG acted video playing on screens and that could be a bit uncomfortable to watch.
