Fluffy: The Last Stop - Dave Matthews Band 7/10 +1 = 8/10This song takes me back to college. Unfortunately, I wasn’t the one playing it; everyone else on my dorm floor was blasting Dave Matthews and thinking they were musicians even though they weren’t and it BUGGED me. It was kind of tool-ish (not the band, the persona). Because of this, I’m almost permanently disenchanted with Dave Matthews. That and DMB dumping their bus toilet water into the Chicago river. This song wasn’t bad, but it really wasn’t my cup of tea. It kind of got monotonous after a bit and it was like 6 minutes of the same quasi-Middle Eastern riff over and over again.
Tomislav: The Endless Sea (Storm Version) - The Gentle Storm 7/10 +1 = 8/10 More Arjen. However, this just just meh to me. I guess this just seems to be more of a setup song to something greater; like I’d listen to it within the concept, but it really doesn’t work by itself in my opinion. It just has that deep ostinato that plays throughout the entire piece (by a GREAT bowed string bass), but it really doesn’t go anywhere. I guess the storm was abrewing, but it hadn’t arrived yet, and so I’m just stuck there wanting more and never getting it. The singer really didn’t blow me away on the album either, again sort of sounding like she’s saving her voice for something greater.
Tyrias: FaFa (Come Stand Before Me) - Guro von Germaten 7.5/10 +1 = 8.5/10This sounds like it should be a musical number. Like I can imagine her just blowing it away on stage during a riveting performance of this during a like WWII era bohemian setting just going nuts during a party. That said, it didn’t really grab me. It was quirky, fun, energetic, but not really something I would go out of my way to listen to. Like, this doesn’t have that blow me away number quality that I expect from a musical (even though this isn’t a musical… I guess I’m in that mindset because it just sounds that way. Blame me and my musical theater nerdiness, which actually pales in comparison to my wife). That being said, I’d like to try another track or two by her just to see if this style is just a one-off or if the entire album has this feel.
Evermind: Your Latest Trick - Dire Straits 8/10 +1= 9/10I’m not surprised this track is yours at all. This had a laid back sound, although it was almost too laid back. I did like it, I dug the saxophone sound, but it was kind of repetitive and made me a little sleepy.
To be fair, this is kind of Dire Straits signature sound, but I’ve never been a huge fan of their music (what limited music I’ve heard by them anyway). It was nice, but really didn’t blow me away to the extent that you like it.
425: Number City - Coheed and Cambria 8/10+1=9/10This track kind of surprised me. I’m only familiar with the Coheed of the early to mid 2000s. This I did not expect at all. And that’s why they aren’t banned. There were parts of this that I enjoyed, but there were parts I was kind of meh about. Some of the instrumentation I was like wha… I don’t mind Claudio’s voice, but there were a couple of times I was kind of like ok… It didn’t grab me as much as others. This sounded more like an attempt to mix prog and ska but didn’t quite work out as planned, and some worked and some didn’t.
Train: EvilFunk - Lechuga 8.5/10 +1= 9.5/10The title matches the music. It’s evil and funky. It’s funkily evil. It’s evilly funky. It starts with this kind of foreboding tone, and then here comes the waow sounding funk guitar that you hear in 60s and 70s music all the time that really needs to make a comeback in time for the match game revival that is coming next month because if the theme doesn’t have that funky guitar I’m going to punch the exec in the throat. Truth be told, that funky guitar gave you the half point, because that’s my favorite part of the song. The rest of it has a nice groove, but really wasn’t anything special.
Elite: Whoa is Me - Dredg 8.5/10 +1= 9.5/10This is an interesting track that sort of blends genre lines by mixing together. Is it prog? Is it alternative? Is it jazz? There are moments of this song that I really enjoy (like the buildup to the chorus and the piano solo at the end). It didn’t blow me away, but I enjoyed it.
Jingle.chad: Just Came Back - Colin James 8.5/10 +1 =9.5/10When I saw the album cover when you sent me the song, and I see this guy with a mullet and the album title in big block letters that screamed 1989, I was like Oh God. And yes, this song was a little formulaic. But it was way more fun than I would have expected. This is the kind of song that would probably bring down the house in an earlier incarnation of my dad’s variety band. This bluesy upbeat rock is a lot of fun. Now I can’t listen to this kind of stuff all the time but in small doses I really do enjoy it. Good job.
Parama: Gold, Tan, Peach, and Grey - Bodies of Water 8.5/10 +1=9.5/10This song did grow on me. I don’t think the intro really fits the rest of the song, but the rest of it is pretty good. I think the male singer is trying to sound like Bowie. The chorus was really driving and I really enjoyed that part (especially when the female singer added the countermelody), but it seemed like ⅔ of the song was that and just that. A little too repetitive to really blow me away. Still, a pretty good submission.
Big Hath: Like That - Dave Weckl Band 8.5/10This was a good guess at a jazz song that I would enjoy, because I did enjoy it. However, there really wasn’t anything that made it stand out to me. It was VERY enjoyable, and I would LOVE to see it played live, but there wasn’t anything that really made me go whooooooooo like I do when I listen to a jazz tune that i really enjoy. Still, a solid effort.
TAC: Last Chance - Shooting Star 8.5/10 +1=9.5/10This is a solid 70s/80s tune that has it’s moments, the chorus in particular. LAST CHANCE! To beLIEVE in yourself! I did like that. The strings section in the 2nd half of the song that lead up to the final occurrence of the chorus remind me of ESPN Sportscenter during a highlights reel of a big game that’s being replayed. HE WILL GO ALL THE WAY. It was a solid song that I liked, but not as much as others.
Scoripon: Madness- Myrath 9/10 +1=10/10Another grower here. You had hinted at a middle eastern vibe with this and initially I was not going to give you the point. I’m listening and I”m like “Where is the middle eastern section? They are playing middle eastern modes, but nothing that says world music to me”. .. And then I’m like oh. Here we go. I did enjoy that section. It’s not exactly what I’m looking for in a world music point, but I’ll accept it, since there’s a significant portion in that style. The song itself is pretty enjoyable, has a nice groove, a good buildup, the 2nd part with the middle eastern influences is excellent.
Kingschmegland: The End Is Beautiful - Echolyn 9/10Again with the music that has serious 70s light rock influences. What’s with that? You know that’s a soft spot for me
. Anyways, I love the driving prog with odd time signatures, and then the straightforward vocally harmonic chorus that hearkens back to some of that 70s sound. This was enjoyable. It wasn’t as solid as your previous submissions, but still a good track.
Sacul: The Raven That Refused to Sing - Steven Wilson 9/10Hauntingly beautiful. I mean what more is there to say? So much emotion into it. I did sit and watch the video and it was very very good. It was dusty when I saw it though, wtf is up with that? I really got to get more into his music, but I think I’m already dealing with enough shit throughout my day to listen to something like Steven Wilson and his mandatory emotional roller coaster.
Lonestar: Liquid Dream - Joseph Magazine 9.5/10 +1= 10.5/10A SOLID instrumental track that wasn’t full of wankery like some instrumental prog metal tends to get. It has a solid wall of sound, good transitions to the next section of the material, good recapitulations to the original thematic material, it has everything. I do enjoy how when the keyboards come in and sort of build upon themselves about ⅔ of the way through the song (a “Quiet” section), and then boom. Good solid music that I will be diving more into the future.
Bolsters: Forever - HAIM 9.5/10Why am I not into this band more? I have heard them on Saturday Night Live and really enjoyed them. Anytime I hear their music on the radio I’m like, Oh, that’s Haim. And then you give me this and I really enjoy it. It sort of mixes what I like about Chvrches and Foster the People with a less bright and more rich vocal quality. Great song, will be listening to more of them for sure.

As you can see, the scores are getting interesting. After this upcoming round, the bottom 4 will be eliminated. More than that are at risk. So make sure you choose wisely
OK, round 4 is open. Reminder, this is the 2 minute long song. There are no exceptions. If it's over 2 minutes (unless it's like 2:01 due to a second or two of transitional SILENCE) it is NOT ACCEPTABLE.
