Back on the Dream Theater Myspace group, I made a thread like this before one of the albums (I think it was before Black Clouds, but it might have been before Systematic Chaos). The idea behind it was to create a fake album title and track list for the upcoming Dream Theater album, with tracklengths and track information for each one. I tried looking for it and couldn't find it (I did luckily find Hypothetical DT: LaBrie's Accident, though), but I figured I'd revive it here. :) Also, you can make an album art if you want using the Dream Theater font and whatever images from Google Images.
So, go right ahead. I'll make one.
Dream Theater - Syllabiblical
(https://img84.imageshack.us/img84/246/syllabiblical.jpg)
Credit for original picture: unknown
1. Overture Free Spirit (8:59)
2. A Crumbling Mess (7:11)
3. Cracked Sidewalk (6:44)
4. Soothsayer (5:55)
5. Midnight Anxiety Hour (10:04)
6. The Rain Machine (8:46)
7. The Remedy (6:00)
8. Daniel and the Lion (20:31)
1. Overture Free Spirit (8:59) (Petrucci; a slowly growing, mostly instrumental album opener [melodic and wank-free; completely light and optimistic; no "metal" guitars and a brief vocal passage occupying the last two minutes])
2. A Crumbling Mess (7:11) (LaBrie; a lament to a particular real-life issue; [sudden and perfectly transient switch to darker, heavier Dream Theater, but NOT in a thrashy "A Nightmare to Remember" way. Likewise, this song is uptempo])
3. Cracked Sidewalk (6:44) (Petrucci; lead single. [Catchy and radio-friendly, but still proggy and heavy.])
4. Soothsayer (5:55) (instrumental [first instrumental since "Stream of Consciousness; heavy with a slight air of light coming through here and there)
5. Midnight Anxiety Hour (10:04) (Portnoy; a story of personal struggle (but not relating to the 12 Steps songs) [dark and epic, but not very heavy musically, kind of like earlier parts of "In the Presence of Enemies, pt. 2" are dark without having too much metal])
6. The Rain Machine (8:46) (Myung; personal reflection of self [very sad, minimalistic in terms of instrumentation]
7. The Remedy (6:00) (Portnoy; expression of rage [the heaviest song on the album; thrashy and biting])
8. Daniel and the Lion (20:31) (Petrucci; a retelling of the biblical story of Daniel in the lions' den [epic and proggy, fluctuating from heavy to non, light to dark, ending on a light and optimistic note])
-
^That sounds amazing.
-
I want The Rain Machine.
Also, what an amazing name for a song. ;D
-
The title, and song nams sounds like Neal morse ^^
-
To be perfectly honest, I would love to see JP do something like Daniel and the Lion.
This is excellent too.
-
4. Soothsayer (5:55) (instrumental [first instrumental since "Stream of Consciousness; heavy with a slight air of light coming through here and there)

I'll do them myself.
Dream Theater - Storm
1. The Pillars of the Earth (12 mins) Epic, with calm spacey sounds contrasted with dramatic heavy emotional sections. Features the best instrumental section since SFAM. Fantasy lyrics by JP. Several JLB high notes too. Begins with bird sounds from the end of TCOT.
2. Rising (6 mins) A driving, rocking song, with some very heavy moments, possible single. Think As I Am
3. Set in Stone (5 mins) Slow paced song, lyrics written by MP and JLB about broken promises in their lives. Beautiful piano solo, with acoustic guitars and fretless bass.
4. Across the Sea (10 mins) Song about war in general and how it affects others who aren't directly involved. Lyrically a cross between Tool's Vicarious and Maiden's These Colours Don't Run. Starts calmly but decends into short chaotic instrumental section before the rest of the song begins. Ends the same way it begins.
5. Black Star. (11 mins) kicks off with badass drum fill and some of the best 7 string riffage ever heard from JP. Verses are just keys and bass and drums with no guitar. Huge chorus with awesome harmonies from MP. Very heavy with JLB delivering awesome gritty vocals and a huge scream at the end! Lyrics are JP fantasy ala I&W. Excellent and tasteful keyboard solo.
6. Familiar Sky (3 mins). Odd song with lyrics by JM. Experimental keyboard work and great melody.
7. The Storm (20 mins) Lyrics can either be interpreted as being about a literal storm, or as a metaphor for confrontation. Subtly reprises many melodys from other songs on the album.
i. Overture.
ii. The Calm before the Storm. Creepy melodies and bass harmonics
iii. Rage. Instrumental
iv. The Aftermath. Incredibly emotional singing from James as the character mourns all he has lost. Similar to Another world from ACOS
v. Healed. Optimistic ending featuring amazing guitar solo.
67 minutes because they wrote a lot more but cut out the shit bits.
-
I love this idea. I took it quite sereously :)
FRONT COVER:

BACK COVER/TRACKLIST:
TRACKLIST GUIDETHROUGH:
01. Overture/Big Bang: This would be very similar to the SDOIT Orchestral Intro. The first 4 minutes would use strings, tubes, bells, cellos and it would end up mixing with a lead sound like the one used in the intro of TCOT. From there on, it builds up to a climax where JR's soft pad resonates in the BG while James sings for about 3 minutes. The main melody would be soft, yet evolving to the second song Light Waves (which continues directly from this song)
02. Light Waves: A Song that has some more energy into it. Its a bass driven song, a la FIF era. However, the last minute of it is a guitar solo that ends up with a thunder. You can hear a nugget if you increase the volume a lot (you can hear the piano intro of ANTR).
03. Baraka: Well, fun fact is that Baraka means THE MEANING OF LIFE in some ancient language (history class). It would be a song with the usage of some percussion a la Frank Zappa for the intro. Then, it would evolve into something more "post-rock" ISIS like. It would evolve, evolve, evolve into a gradually heavier state until it reaches the next song, which starts from where Baraka ends.
04. U.F.O 43: Heavy Slayer-like song. Pretty much a TDEN without the intrumental section. However, after three minutes of heaviness, the song just fades out as a reprise of the Overture orchestra fades in at the same time.
05. Cosmic Conspiracy Pt.1 : This first two minute part would be a quick instrumental where JR demonstrates the Eingehard, iPad, iPhone and all kinds of other lead stuff. It would be a "drumless" and "guitarless" song, but there would be a pretty kick ass bass backboning everything while JR goes crazy in the lead.
06. Cosmic Conspiracy Pt. 2: This would naturally start where Pt. 2 ends (we know how this works already). This would definably be a song that reminded everyone of a post-rock Tool-ish version of Scarred (its hardto imagine isn't it?). But pretty much it would begin pretty intense with some heavy riffs, drop out to a more calm ambient thing and then rise up again until it fades out.
07. Our Earth: This would be a surprise for the DT community. It would actually be EVE but with James singing. Since this is all imaginary, we can also pretend Kevin Moore came to the studio to help in this one. :)
08. Black Holes Of Salvation: This song would feature an Opeth contribution. It would be like "Bleak" where the song starts with death metal singing from Arkfield and then it would calm a little down for LaBrie.
09. Spacetime: This song would be written by LaBrie. It would be somehow like "Slightly Out Of Reach" from his solo album, mainly piano driven with some catchy riffs. After 6 minutes though, there would be the first guitar-lead tradeoff solos (just cause we know there will HAVE to be one)
10. Darkness Approaches: Very dark and atmospheric instrumental. Pretty much there would be pad and bass where the guitar would just suddenly come in with this agresive chords. But they would be played once and then resonate over time. Near the end, the drums kick in, the guitar gets into hyperspeed mode and before we notice, we are already on the final epic track.
11. The Big Crunch: This song would begin with heavy 3 minute intro with some seven stringing (a la Mirror style). Then there would be a cool drum fill that would be the transition to the second part of the song where there is a tradeoff between Mike portnoy, LaBrie and John petrucci. There is playing around with Right and Left channels as if one represents science and the other religion for their respective versions of the end of the world. After some of that cool stuff, there would be a piano break a la Blind Faith and then some 4 minutes of choirs singing while the guitar and bass do a unique tradeoff a la Majesty times (maybe not even that). When the instrumental is over, the piano starts playing with LaBrie doing some soft singing as if the world is ending. Then the guitar comes in, the main riff is played again in a faster tempo and LaBrie sings this super high note that echoes for a while. While it does so, we have explosion sounds and some distorted guitar and leads, implying that the world is over.
Hidden track: This would be a nugget and pretty much we would have the main riff of the Overture played, but this time with backward vocals from Mike Portnoy saying "In memory of BONGO."
Man, i got inspired on this one...
-
You put WAY too much thought into that.

DREAM THEATER - Renegades
It's a concept album
1. January 1935 (04:00 - Lyrics - JP)
Starts with the last note of TCOT...develops until JLB joins the action late on introducing the concept of the album...
2. The February Planet (06:56 - Lyrics: JP)
...which turns out to be about some sort of resistance movement of some description that is secretly investigating some sort of event; they call themselves 'The February Planet' and then...
3. March Murder (07:02 - Lyrics: MP)
...their leader is murdered...in March...
4. Hurricane April (05:47 - Lyrics: MP)
...so to follow up the murder song there's a really heavy number, heaviest on the record with backing growls from MP...
5. Emerald May (04:09 - Lyrics: JLB)
...followed by a peaceful, piano led number, similar to IWBY in that it sounds a bit like U2 but it's like good U2 not rubbish U2...the lyrics to this section deal with the relationship between two of the 'renegades' that develops before they go off on a journey to (hopefully) find the truth...
6. June Canyons (05:55 - Instrumental)
...epic soundscapes, quite JR focused because he's barely had any solo time so far...
7. The Moon Of July (08:12 - Lyrics: JP)
...then this crashes in with some heavy riffage and some JLB Awake-type vocals...no idea what's happening with the storyline at this point but there may be a bear involved...
8. August Resistance (06:29 - Lyrics: JLB)
...they discover a great political secret and hurry back the way they came...it's got plenty of JR in it, plust a JM solo...little bit like PoW...
9. Over September (05:40 - Lyrics: JP)
...fairly subdude as one of the 'renegades' is killed by a spy who's been there since the beginning...
10. October Storm (06:39 - Lyrics: MP)
...heavy time...some more MP growls, no wait there's an Akerfeldt guest appearance for just a short verse near the end...the 'renegades' realise their leader, who didn't make the trip to wherever they went, is behind the thing that happened to cause the resistance to spring up any way...
11. November Voices (03:24 - Instrumental)
...JR led instrumental...with some choral voices in the background...ends with a heartbeat...
12. Under December (12:00 - Lyrics: JP)
...the remaining 'renegades' confront evil bloke and win but all but 2 (the 2 having the relationship, ahhhhhhhh!) die in a big fight...the song ends with a monumental barrage of solos by first MP then JM then JR then JP...it's like the greatest solo of all time.

I really, really like the Renegades one. :)
Also, to the person who said "Theater of Dreams", I remember somebody in the original thread of this coming up with that, and the movements were something like:
Theater of Dreams
I. Close Your Eyes...
II. Fantastic Journey
III. Lucid Reality
IV. Open Your Eyes
V. Welcome to the Dream Theater
I really want a self-titled Dream Theater album with a title track. :)
-
That's cool, but I don't dig the "Welcome to the Dream Theater" philosophy that much :D It sounds like maiden putting something in their self-titled in the lines of "Welcome to the Iron Maiden Experience" :lol
-
I think this will be their self titled record.

I guess it really depends on how you perceive it. I understand what you mean, though. It's kind of like how I don't like the way "A Nightmare to Remember" starts with the words "A NIGHTMARE TO REMEMBER!" and how "The Count of Tuscany"'s first stanza ends with "I met THE COUNT OF TUSCANY!"
Hearing LaBrie in my head say "Welcome to the....DREAM THEATER (AHHH!)" is a bit odd. XD

(Hidden Track)
12. Midnight (0:11)
(Total Length - 78:55)
It would be a concept album about the end of days.
"The Last Dawn Of Man" would begin with nature sounds (gasp TCOT connection!) and begin with a symphonic-like build, like SDOIT Overture, but darker. Think SDOIT meets ANTR. Then through the 11 minutes, you'd hear some of the themes throughout the album, but it would stand very well on it's own, especially being the first song on the album. Lyrically, it's about man's last day on earth, and how all we've done on this planet has come to this, our own imminent destruction.
After that, the short "Morning Of The Dead" would describe how the undead have come into being. It's a soft piano interlude in the vein of "Through My Words", but with a bit more substance. This would flow right into "Rise Of The Dead" with, yes, lyrics by Myung, who's writing style might fit a song that would be disjointed in it's verses and unexpected chorus changes. It would feature Myung on a bass solo in the instrumental bit in the middle, and a bass-grove riding out through the end.
"A Problem" would feature lyrics by Portnoy and reveal how the world is falling apart, not by the zombies that are attacking, but by the rest of humanity, who are fearing the coming end and taking drastic measures to solve their "problems".
"Daywalkers" would be the insane instrumental, it would be battle-sounding and involve a lot of syncopation and time/tempo changes.
LaBrie's contribution would be "Final Sunset", and be the token ballad on the album, and would be a needed calm-down after the previous instrumental. It foreshadows the coming night and is a closer to the first half of the album.
"Four Riders" is a song about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but not literally in the Biblical sense, but more along the lines of what the Horsemen do to men, but it's man that's done it to themselves - disease, war, famine and death due to the irradiated zombies and shortages in supplies worldwide. This is a heavy, in-your-face, balls-to-the-wall prog metal...with some ROROROROR thrown in for :metal
The Portnoy-penned "A Solution?" shows mankind seeking out solutions to the prior "Problem". It's a more upbeat, hopeful sounding song.
That song then segues into "Too Little Too Late", which starts with dark, heavy instrumental as mankind has realized that their time is almost up and there isn't much they can do.
"One Minute To Midnight" is a reference to the Doomsday Clock, and this short piano-interlude instrumental is a sort of the "calm before the storm".
"The Bell Tolls" is when the clock strikes Midnight, and it's the end for mankind. There are some returning themes from the album as the song wraps up in a dark way, somewhere as a cross between ITPOE and "Finally Free". The last bit of the song has a bell tolling twelve times, and at the twelfth toll, the song ends...
"Midnight" is a short hidden track after the last toll rings in "The Bell Tolls", which reveals that mankind may have hope after all...
-Marc.

I really, really like the Renegades one. :)
Also, to the person who said "Theater of Dreams", I remember somebody in the original thread of this coming up with that, and the movements were something like:
Theater of Dreams
I. Close Your Eyes...
II. Fantastic Journey
III. Lucid Reality
IV. Open Your Eyes
V. Welcome to the Dream Theater
I really want a self-titled Dream Theater album with a title track. :)
Thanks, tbh I think the 'Renegades' title is the worst thing about it.
I quite like that Theatre of Dreams one, I think a song called Welcome To The Dream Theater would be awesome.

Self titled 2-disc album.

It would be cool, provided it wasn't approached musically like TSF is relation to the 12 step suite. Perhaps he felt like SDOIT and 8VM both have songs that ultimately represent the album as a whole, unlike the other albums.

I think It's because those two albums have title tracks, so putting Octavarium and Six Degrees in the list would be redundant.

Change the title and you've got a deal.
-
call it the Ides of March imo

1. Train of Thought (18:00)
2. Systematic Chaos (16:00)
3. Falling Into Infinity (11:00)
4. Images and Words (35:00)
Very cool concept, actually, although the lack of SDOIT and 8VM make me wonder.
How could it make you wonder? Both of those albums have title tracks.
Anyway, I really like this concept. And those track lengths slay me.

Ahaaaa!

Sucking on His Pipe/Distinguished Accent
1. Sucking On His Pipe [57:49]
MP - Flutes
JP - Piccolo/Tin whistle
JR - Tin whistle/Bagpipes
JM - Kazoo/Shakuhachi
JLB - Random vocalisations and recorder
An improvised jam where the band ditch the rock instruments in favour of pipes, with James LaBrie butting in with random passages spoken in a distinguished accent.
:metal
-
I would buy that.

I really hate to storm in and assume the role of Mr Grumpyface, but some of these are HORRIBLY pretentious. Sort of... much as I love 'em, but more along the lines of Riverside or power metal than Dream Theaterry stuff. DT are way more down to earth than to have such word saladdy or typically mythological stuff going on - or obfuscatey words like "Triscadecagon" (for an example that nobody's come up with - trying not to point any fingers, cause I'm REALLY trying to avoid falling into the Mr Grumpyface boots) or whatever.
Just IMO, of course. And, as a gesture of goodwill, here is my awful attempt for you to - quite rightly - rip the living shite out of.
DREAM THEATER - The Truth
1. The Speed of Light
2. Lock and Key
3. One of the Family
4. Under the Surface
5. Spiralling
6. Surgical Gloves
7. The Sandstorm
3's the token sentimental-but-surprisingly-good one. The Speed of Light would be a fairly heavy, pulsing, fast-paced first single, 6 or 7 minutes long. Track 7's the slightly-longer-than-the-others one, probably fifteen minutes or so long. I've got a feeling that either 5 or 6 is fairly heavy.
-
I made this cover. I'm not too sure about the songs.

6. Surgical Gloves
Sounds epic.

Change the name to something a little easier to pronounce and I'll gladly take the album cover and the direction you're suggesting.

While I agree that it's a very well made album cover I can't help but feel that the Hugh Syme style artwork is getting a bit old. It'd be cool to see them get a new graphic artist for next album cover.

I love Hugh Syme. He fits DT so well. Likewise, if they experimented with another artist, it could be cool. I know they worked with him in the past, but what if they got Storm Thorgerson again? His work on A Change of Seasons was great and it's one that I consider to be iconic of theirs. That would be cool.
Other artists that might be cool...what about the guy who made The Rainmaker for The Flower Kings? I don't know his name (does anybody?)

I hope they stick with Syme, but don't stick with the 'We need things that represent each song on the cover' thing. I'd like to see something in the vein of Octavarium.

DT've allways had the coolest CD vovers of all bands, really like BC&SL, Octavarium and ToT...Awake is pretty cool aswell

i love this kind of thread:)!!

Dream Theater
"Concept Of Solitude"
1. The Concept (Overture) Instrumental - 3:21
2. Fallen Dreams - 10:45
3. Truth - 9:51
4. Autumn Skies - 11:11
5. Wicked Mind - 8:41
6. New Dawn (Interlude I/Orchestral) Instrumental - 5:00
7. The Meaning Of Life - 15:13
8. Undiscovered - 7:30
9. Yesterday - 5:14
10. Concept Of Solitude - 21:39
Description of the album:
The first two minutes of the overture will have an epic piano improvisation by Jordan, then followed by the orchestration and choirs, then after the guitar/drum/bass will join.
that's all i could think of haha but don't worries i will post more tomorrow:P...
-
1. Wisdom Of Knowledge (Very epic feel, imagine Overture mixed with TCOT)
2. Look To The Light (Very high singing, similar to Under A Glass Moon music wise)
3. Subconciousness (A Portnoy song, 7 string guitar and double bass)
4. You Hold The Key (Ballad, much like Disappear)
5. Darker Days (Heavy at times but slow during the choruses, think Endless Sacrifice mixed with AROP)
6. Imminent Fate (A very Proggy yet extremely heavy song with a lot keyboard, great instrumental section)
7. Consequences Of Reality (A long, experimental song with a emotional solo along the lines of Another Day)
8. The Journey Home (Long epic, similar to Finally Free)
Seems like a realistic tracklisting.

Dream Theater - Moniker Typo
(https://i.imgur.com/qY1CQ.jpg)
The title 'Moniker Typo' is an anagram of Mike Portnoy
A concept album about the things we love.
1. Charging Infinity (0:58)
2. Second Millennium (6:52)
3. The Wedding Blues (5:00)
4. Mr. Suburb (1:15)
5. Belfry, Long Island (10:11)
6. Indefinite Mark (3:50)
7. Streets of Chaplain (6:00)
8. Mighty Depth Charge (9:25)
9. Incurvatus in se (7:01)
10. Down and Out (3:22)
11. Stairway Sideways (8:55)
12. Infinity Charged (12:02)
1. Charging Infinity (0:58) (an introduction to the concept of the album)
2. Second Millennium (6:52) (a very proggy, almost disjointed to the untamed ear, Zappaesque song; heavy where it needs to be, by Petrucci)
3. The Wedding Blues (5:00) (a ballad of sorts, sad but optimistic, by LaBrie)
4. Mr. Suburb (1:15) (a lead-in instrumental to the next song)
5. Belfry, Long Island (10:11) (a song written by Myung and Petrucci about days of innocence; mixes both soft and heavy, but it's all light)
6. Indefinite Mark (3:50) (Rudess's first written song; both LaBrie and Rudess sing on this one; about his love for what he does)
7. Streets of Chaplain (6:00) (LaBrie's sentimental sadness)
8. Mighty Depth Charge (9:25) (Petrucci; this will be a story song a la Systematic Chaos, only more tame and within the album's concept. Focusing on compromise to attain what we want)
9. Incurvatus in se (7:01) (Myung; a song about how it is okay to live for one's self)
10. Down and Out (3:22) (A Rudess piano piece, very light and emotive, leading into the next track)
11. Stairway Sideways (8:55) (NO DRUMS OR PERCUSSION AT ALL; a reference to the phrase 'The Crooked Step'; this is the tribute to Mike)
12. Infinity Charged (12:02) (a sort of reprise of the whole album, with climactic restatings of the theme.)
-
Man, that covert art is just plain awesome. I'm really digging it.

Dream Theater - Fire In My Eyes (2011)
All Music by DT

5. Fire In My Eyes - 27:14 (Myung)
Total: 76:28
Produced by John Petrucci

Please, no more epics.
-
There's got to be epics, but I hope that the next album isn't focused on only epics (like how BC had 4 epics and 2 singles? No more of that, please. XD)
I don't like saving the epics for the end too. Have one in the middle, one at the end, etc.
Glad you like the cover art. :)
-
I have always wanted a christmas album from DT. Perhaps a version of the best song from "The Messiah" by Handel. W/choir A D.T version of Vivaldi would Rip as well. An Awesome concept album would be Dostoyesky's "Crime and Punishment"
-
There's got to be epics
No. See A Change Of Seasons used to be special because it was "the" epic. Now they've been crapping out long songs like they're nothing and it kinda shows. Not only are they not putting as much effort into them (see ITPOE) but it kind of takes away from the allure that ACOS has.

This. There doesn't "have" to be epics. WDADU, I&W, Awake, FII, SFAM, TOT - no epics.

In The Name of God isn't an epic? To me this song is the perfect example of what an epic is.
-
No. It's just a long song.
-
Newsflash, guys. These terms we use to describe rock music, like "epic," are loosely defined. Some people consider Stairway to Heaven to be an epic, even though that song is SHORT by DT standards. So "In the Name of God" can be an epic-- if you want it to. Being an "epic," for me, only has so much to do with how long a song is.
For me, I judge whether a song is an epic or not based on whether it goes places. For me, Learning to Live will always be an epic, because the song takes you on a journey, even though it's shorter than a number of more recent DT songs which aren't epics. And isn't that what epic means, at least from a literary point of view? In the Name of God is an epic too, at least in my view. That song goes places. The Ministry of Lost Souls, unfortunately, is a slopic. A long, sloppy attempt at an epic.
-
Well, whatever. But for me, there is nothing epic about ITNOG. It's just the longest song on that album.
-
Which is how people are defining the word epic nowadays. To me Black Clouds has no epics but to a lot of people you'll get at least "The Count of Tuscany" and maybe "A Nightmare to Remember" just because they happen to be long.
-
Really Hef? I find the "Justifying violence" part (esp. JLB's background screams), the outro, and the beginning to be all kinds of epic. Its deserving of the epic title without being over twenty minutes.
Black Clouds has three epics: TSF, TBOT, and TCOT. ANTR doesn't really evoke that sort of "epic" feel I get from classic songs like ACoS, Supper's Ready, or Starship Trooper.
-
I can almost see the argument for TCOT, but I don't see anything remotely epic about ANTR either.
And TSF and TBOT certainly don't seem epic, either. I don't understand that at all, SDV.
-
I think Tuscany's definitely an epic. A Nightmare to Remember, not really. I mean it does have that cool middle section but there's just too much of the same thing going on for me to really thing it takes you anywhere. Too much staying in the same place to be an epic. Hard to gauge TSF because it's part of the 12SS. And TBoT is just "Spirit of the Radio" with an extended sappy outro ;)
-

Generally, I don't throw around the "epic" label for songs (I'd say DT has maybe 4-6 songs I'd call "epics), but I actually agree about ITNOG. I don't think it's a *great* song, but to me it's nothing if not "epic". Epic doesn't necessarily say anything about quality.

Both of these. IMO, TCOT is the only thing from BCSL that might qualify as an epic.

now that's an epic
now wait a minute... are we going off-topic?

Hard to gauge TSF because it's part of the 12SS. And TBoT is just "Spirit of the Radio" with an extended sappy outro ;)
Well said Joe, I pretty much agree with all of this. When the hell does that ever happen?! :lol
-
I made this cover. I'm not too sure about the songs.
Wow, reminds me of ACOS!!
That's rather epic.

Back to topic, how's this for an album.
Title: Images and Words
1 - Pull Me Under
2 - Another Day
3 - Take The Time
4 - Surrounded
5 - Metropolis Pt1 The Miracle and The Sleeper
6 - Under a Glass Moon
7 - Wait For Sleep
8 - Learning To Live

There's got to be epics
No. See A Change Of Seasons used to be special because it was "the" epic. Now they've been crapping out long songs like they're nothing and it kinda shows. Not only are they not putting as much effort into them (see ITPOE) but it kind of takes away from the allure that ACOS has.
This. You'll NEVER beat ACOS :( And you're right dude, it feels like there's just no effort in the epics nowadays apart from pointless waffle in a "look how good we are" sense.
-
The first time I heard the intro to ANTR, I thought " Fuck...this is epic".
Maybe you listened to it too many times, but I think ANTR is fairly massive. Not just in length, but in scope. I feel is qualifies.
-
For the record: TSF is one of the most epic songs DT has done. I still get goosebumps from it.
New fake album time!

It's just a long metal song with a mellow interlude. There's nothing really epic about it. Not even the scope - it's about a horrible car accident where everyone survived.

Yes, I did make the album art in paint. If anybody with better graphics talents wants to take the concept and make something beautiful, I totally would not stand in your way.
The album is a concept album that may or may not (but probably may) have something to do with a certain event that happened to the band recently.

1. Equinox 9:42 - Petrucci. (Brilliant intro ambience leading into tight, heavy 7 string riff based masterpiece showcasing fresh new DT sound and energy. Impressive showcase of new drummer with tight sync and double kick tech mixed with groove elements in Chorus. Big chorus and wonderful vocal melodies over a wonderfully produced new DT epic.)
2. Irreversible 4:57 - Petrucci (Think Wither/ Forsaken. This is the single off the album and has a wonderful piano/ vocal intro leading into a stylish verse progression which is supported by a harmony driven memorable chorus. Beautiful guitar solo which is melodic and tasty. The song also fades with an outro solo mirroring the chorus melody.)
3. Fragmented Illusion 10:23 - Petrucci (Massive 7 string riff and drum intro. Think The Mirror crossed with Damage Control crossed with The Glass Prison. Huge riffage and chorus with many tech showcase moments yet remaining tasteful and stylish throughout. An interesting middle solo section between JP and JR evolving into a jazz fusion style then building back into the main riff. Some ambient moments throughout also which breaks up the ongoing onslaught.)
4. Ashes of Amira 8:43 - Petrucci/Myung (Instrumental. Think Stream of Consciousness and Erotomania)
5. Amidst My Madness 6:10 - Petrucci/LaBrie (Think The Great Debate. Cool intro leading into some of the coolest tight guitar/synth riffage ever. Some effective vocal efffects creating atmosphere and a dark heavy chorus. This song changes up throughout into some calmer moments alomost like Voices and returns to the signature chorus. Some very tasty drumming and guitar work in this one a Dance of Eternity style solo section.)
6. Breath of Life 3:56 - Rudess/Petrucci (Think Hourglass mixed with Vacant. A wonderous short interlude instrumental on piano and haunting JP electric melody on electric guitar. This piece slows the pace down and sets the mood perfectly for the intro to the final song.
7. The Balance of Power 18:36 - Petrucci/ Myung (A classic Dream Theater epic akin to ITPOE part 2, Octovarium and The Count of Tuscanny. This starts with acoustic guitar like ACOS with some beautiful vocals beginning not long after. The song build playing on the initial melody before transforming into a Beautiful Agony type Chorus section. Some vocal samples are heard throughout an atmospheric section that grwos into the most epic instrumental section ever written. The drumming here puts aside any doubts about DT's new member and JP unleashes with jaw dropping riffage and tech moments. JR uses many piano and pad sounds until this section until his impressive solo input into this section. This onslaught climaxes before laying to rest and entering the final outro similar to TCOT. The huge chorus returns with a massive build up and drum outro that rivals Finally Free. The piece ends on a high, powerful uplifting progression.
Total run time 60:67

White Lion - Pride ?
just kidding..

Cool!

I think I remember RobWebster making a post like this earlier, but I find a lot of the albums/songs that people are making up to be really cheesy or pretentious. Whether they're being serious or not is something different, but I would cringe the greatest of cringes if I ever saw a DT album with those kind of names. They really don't have pretentiousness built into their system. Cheesiness, maybe, but they hide that cheesiness in most of their album/song titles.
I do like "Balance of Power" as a name for an album though. I would actually like to see shorter albums and more tracks around the 8-12 minute mark.
-
A lion on the album cover would indeed be cool. :metal
Gonna give a try on the tracklist thingy, no albumcover though!

Thank you so much DTF! I got another few coming up in the woodworks, but funny thing I noticed. On the Uncovering Discovery album, I should have had cover highlighted in a different subtle color and it could be a Cover's album. :lol
-
7. A Small Favor (Myung/Petrucci/Rudess, Petrucci). 5:17
Singling this out because it would be way cool to have a song (with lyrics) that has no drums on it on the next album. I don't know whether it could be acoustic or a ballad or whatever, but it would be really cool to hear something.
No, not like The Silent Man (which is a great song).

Based on Labovs categorization of spoken discourse.
This is a concept half album based on the mind of a man who lost his ability to speak and can't express himself. These are his thoughts.
Hidden Explorations
The concept is only on one side of the album but is not intended to be one song.
1 - Abstract - (5.35) Introduction with simple background to the life beforehand. (JP)
2 - Orientation - (11.30) - Starts off quite heavy - recollection of the event. (JP)
3 - Complicating Action - (7.10) - Coming to terms with it all, quite proggy and melodic. (JM)
4 - Resolution - (8.58) - The song which can be the single. (JLB)
5 - Evaluation - (3.03) - Like Losing Time/Razors Edge. (JR)
6 - Coda - (18.32) - Many themes being revisited and ends with the man accepting it. (ALL)
54.08 - CD 1
1 - Conflict of Minds (6.22) Instrumental
2 - Mita and the Muskhi - (8.30) - Kinda like a cross between TDEN and Forsaken about the Iron Age King - (JP)
3 - The Hidden Exploration (12.21) - Learning to Live + Trial of Tears + Lifting Shadows. (JM)
4 - Waterfall (7.36) - Proggy, melodic, pianos, acoustics, nice calming way to end the album. (JR)
34.09 - CD 2
Overall 88.17
-
That actually sounds really cool.^
-
I'd buy it. hands down, I'd love to see another double album.
-
Bumping this up. Want to see more. :corn
-
Thanks! I actually had a dream last night that DT's new album had come out. The details are hazy, but this is what they were:
- 12 tracks
- The title/artwork was really mysterious and different from them; reminded me a bit of that leaked Time by Wintersun album art
- The first track had Feat. Roger Waters and it was all him on the vocals, but then LaBrie took over from 2 onwards.
- Lots of the songs were short, like really short, in the three minute range, but there were a few 8-11 minute songs too, which brought the thing to like 50 minutes
I wish I could export that album into here from my head. It seemed so cool.
-
Haha, I also had a dream about DT's new record recently.
I still remember parts of the tracklist (actually, I read about it either on Wikipedia or on DTF). It was a double album with one huge opener ("Sadly", over 51 minutes long), followed by a 11-minute song and two shorter ones (4 and 6 minutes). The second disc consisted of five songs which were between five and seven minutes in length.
-
I bet they're going to use artwork from this thread for the new album cuz the artwork in here has been so epic. Truly fantastic
-
Dream Theater - This one goes to 11
CD 1: An exercise in genericness
1. Unyielding kaleidoscope
2. Infinite veracity
3. Cosmological Constance (My love)
4. Bebop in Bebot
5. Loompus quo Oompus
I: Wonk-a-mole
II: Fucking midgets, how do they work?
III: Sugar crash (instrumental)
IV: Let's play from bar 5 on, this time in chocolate!
V: Coda Cola (Flush it down)
CD 2: In your face!
1. The shattered mirror
2. It was enough after all
3. Evil unrooted
4. Rebuilding the fortress
5. I shelved my spit shield (Petrucci)
A few notes on the songs:
"Unyielding kaleidoscope": The song to get the first music video off the album, it will feature MP's visual effects from LSFAM, all the way through
"Cosmological Constance (My love)": A space epic, with JR's soon-to-be famous butt controller during the spaced-out solo in the middle.
"Bebop in Bebot": One word: Plastic.
Oh, and CD 2 is played by a drum machine.

A cover like that would be great, seriously. I am rather tired of the cluttered covers a la BCSL. The "good" news is that I think MP was the major driving force behind those types of covers, so maybe we can expect some fresh wind with the next one.
rumborak
-
What other covers are cluttered? Aside from Black Clouds, Images and Words, and Awake, aren't all the other covers pretty basic?

Thanks rumborak.

SC was very busy too I thought actually.
But yes, not all of them are that way. I just think it's an overstretched concept they should have retired quite a while ago.

I can't say I disagree. I really don't care much for Hugh Syme, to be honest.

Maelstrom
1. Nature's Bounds (Myung, 11:39)
2. Desperate Cries (Petrucci, 8:58)
3. Mind of the Soul (Petrucci, 6:30)
4. The End of the Road (Petrucci/Myung, 7:00)
5. Ecclesiastics of Deception (LaBrie, 13:13)
6. Maelstrom
i. Discovery (Myung, 5:15)
ii. Flame of Passion (Petrucci, 4:36)
iii. Sandstorm (instrumental, 2:45)
iv. The Desert Sea (Myung, 7:49)
v. Oasis (LaBrie, 6:20)
vi. The Rekindled Fire (Petrucci, 5:00)
vii. Forever Reaching (Petrucci, 1:45)
"Nature's Bounds" is a mystical piece, with very ambiguous lyrics, akin to Lifting Shadows Off A Dream. The theme is man's connection with the natural world. It opens with quiet wind chimes, with JLB softly coming in around the :45 timemark. The song flows in a very stream-of-consciousness manner (not like the song SoC, but the actual writing style). It never gets heavy or bombastic. To compare with another song, most of the song's mood would be like a combination of The Best of Times and Erotomania.
"Desperate Cries" is, on the other hand, extremely metal. Think Train of Thought merged with Static Impulse. Blazing drums, br00tal guitar, sinister vocals. The theme is from the perspective of those that are suffering, crying out for help, and how their entire society and lifestyle has been reduced to an animalistic, anarchic state.
"Mind of the Soul" is a song whose style I would relate to Take The Time's. It is lighthearted, whimsical, and uplifting. Not only are there many time signature changes, but there are also very many tempo changes. The theme is simply following one's heart.
"The End of the Road" is a somber song, very much in the vein of Transatlantic's "Bridge Across Forever" and Porcupine Tree's "Stop Swimming." It looks to the future, and realizes that the dream can't go on forever, and that everything must one day come to an end. It is a sad song, but at the same time very nostalgic.
"Ecclesiastics of Deception" is the second really metal song on the album. Think of the song structure of Sacrificed Sons in the style of This Dying Soul. It is an extremely sinister, nasty song, written about the corrupt religious leaders that sheperd people around to fulfill their own lustful, greedy desires.
"Maelstrom" is the epic, of course. It is a song that metaphorically portrays DT's entire history.
"Discovery" is about how they explored various bands in their youth, and really came to love music.
"Flame Of Passion" relates how DT finally got together, producing music, got a record deal, and seemingly made it big. It talks about how everything went great, and how the fans really exploded after Images and Words, and just how much fun touring was.
"Sandstorm" puts an end to their youthful euphoria. It is a chaotic instrumental very much like Neal Morse's "Storm Before the Calm" and Symphony X's "Scylla and Charybdis."
The instrumental lands us in "The Desert Sea." Their very lives are sucked out of them, and they cannot see the fruit of their labor. There is no end in sight as they wander aimlessly. Worst of all, they don't know where to turn. It is a very melancholy song, very much like a combination of The Wasteland and Vacant.
"Oasis" marks a point of rest and reprieve, but is in no way the light at the end of the tunnel. It is in this movement that they clear their minds, meditate, and come to some real conclusions about what they are called to do.
"The Rekindled Fire" is where the band finally stands up and decides to brave the maelstrom of being a musician. They rediscover their love of music and know in their hearts that this is what they were born to do.
"Forever Reaching" is a reprise of Discovery, and the conclusion of this epic. It leaves an optimistic note that DT will keep going on, despite the trials that await.

I like this. I have to say, though, Maelstrom would only be good if Petrucci abandoned his literal lyric-writing from the last album. With that, it would be so cheesy.

Wow. Didn't expect that. Brilliant work there! :tup
On BrotherH's tracklisting: Is the title track to Maelstrom one single track, or is it split into several tracks, like the recent Spock's Beard epics?
-
Split up.

I like that cover. Reminds me of the covers for Opeth's Deliverance and Damnation quite a lot (aside from being a lot more colourful, of course).

Dream Theater - Album: Dream Theater
1. Change - 4.34 (JP, JM, JR) Lyrics (JP)
(Start with the birds and shizz from the end of count. A beautiful bass lines start to build up with acoustic guitar and piano joining in and LaBrie giving it some. No Drums. Just a soft, melodic and a brilliantly spellbinding song.)
2. White Rabbit - 5.59 (New guy)
(Guitar start chugging away and drums explode out of nowhere with basslines beyond what you can imagine. This is a new and very exciting DT. Jordan using crazy synth stuff and LaBrie solid and heavy. Great fast, heavy song. Song loosely based on Alice in Wonderland)
3. Remember Me - 8.01 (JLB)
(Starts soft but builds up throughout with some crazy instrumental section, but not as heavy as recent stuff, more Hells Kitcheny vibe with vocals. Porcupine Treeish. )
4.Of Skies And Seas - 10.01 (JM)
(First epic, and not just long epic but EPIC. It's bombastic and heavy, drums shooting around in the atmosphere, several guitars in crazy harmonies, strange morphwiz sounds, tuned down bass and a no quarter vocal effect on LaBrie for the first movement. It then dies down during the second half and becomes more of a slower vibe and slowly dies down to guitar ending the song. Tells the story of a lost child, trying to find his way home)
5. The Burnin' Man - 5.00 (JP)
(A good mainstream single, could have come right off Images and Words. In the vein of Pull Me Under/Panic Attack/RUSH)
6. Voyager – 6.34 (JP, JM, New guy)
Instrumental and incredibly heavy, Meshuggah meets Pink Floyd
7. The Dream Theater – 26.36 (Wrote by all members)
This is it, the song to put all Dream Theater fans to rest. Everyone will realize this is the greatest song they have ever written. James sings his heart out, drums are incredible, guitar and bass run wild. Jordan uses his FULL potential to make the greatest song ever. The song is about someone realizing they can fulfill whatever their Dreams say they can do, with a hidden meaning that Dream Theater themselves have just done that with this song.

Dream Theater- Hackneyed Posts and Speculations

Part One of a New Series of Dream Theater Records where Ridiculous Content is passed off as "Realistic Lyrics," rooted in the tradition of The Count of Tuscany.

a.) see Overture 1928

a.) see Fatal Tragedy mixed with A7X's "Nightmare."

new Learning to Live

a.) See "Raw Dog"
5.) Days and Days and Days in a Daze: We Love You, Mike 9:30.
a.) See "The Best of Times" This one's like a love letter to Mike.

Disc Two: Speculations (58:58)

e.) We Speak, But You Don't Listen (Never Enough-esque note to the fans)

g.) The Producer (It's Me) (kinda like James "Celebrity" with a 5 minute guitar solo at the end)
f.) You Just Heard the Record, Are You Still Fucking Excited? (The Day I Will Remember... reprise) (a 5 minute
instrumental song followed by 24 minutes and 58 seconds of sounds to make the 2nd disc exactly 58:58).

8. The Darkness Within (Petrucci) 8:45
9. Dare To Dream (LaBrie) 5:40
10. Winds of Change (Petrucci) 12:15

Those song titles are really cool. Surprised to see no epic, but maybe it's for the best in DT11.
-
I would say in that list, the Winds of Change would be an epic like Trial of Tears, which now doubt is still considered an epic.

That's exactly what I was going for. :tup This "creation" is basically patterned after FII which is what I'm kind of hoping for in the next DT release!

I'd definitely be interested. It sounds cool!

DREAM THEATER
"Winds of Change"
1. The Cold Breath of Winter (Petrucci) 11:20
2. Which Road To Choose (Myung) 7:15
3. Overload (instrumental) 6:00
4. Nevermore (LaBrie) 5:30
5. Exercise In Futility (Myung) 8:20
6. Nothing Disturbed (LaBrie) 7:45
7. Sense of Being (Petrucci) 5:50
8. The Darkness Within (Petrucci) 8:45
9. Dare To Dream (LaBrie) 5:40
10. Winds of Change (Petrucci) 12:15
A little "background" on the upcoming album's songs
1. The Cold Breath of Winter (Petrucci) 11:20
This song deals with the homeless people of the world (specifically about NYC), and how they have to cope in the winter months living in the streets. Very dark and thought provoking. Think along the lines of a "Scarred" composition.
2. Which Road To Choose (Myung) 7:15
This song deals with how people handle intense situations in which you really feel "torn" about. Think along the lines of a "New Millineum" composition.
3. Overload (instrumental) 6:00
Think sheer prog-metal awesomeness :metal
4. Nevermore (LaBrie) 5:30
I actually hear this song in my head. A power ballad like DT has never done before. Think "Forsaken" or "Anna Lee", but with a real powerful delivery from JLB! This song deals with loss of a loved one (not through death though, but by breakup - Could be family member, lover, etc but...NOT MP related)!
5. Exercise In Futility (Myung) 8:20
This song deals with trying to be someone you are not. I'm "hearing" a "Beyond This Life" kind of vibe for this one.
6. Nothing Disturbed (LaBrie) 7:45
Uplifting song that deals with overcoming trauma and moving on "in a good place". Think "Another Day" meets "Wither" with an awesome middle jam session
7. Sense of Being (Petrucci) 5:50
Straight ahead Petrucci prog metal rocker that deals with internet self perception. Think "Lie" or "About To Crash".
8. The Darkness Within (Petrucci) 8:45
The first of 2 songs that seemingly deal with the DT/MP split. This song deals with MP's side of things (as told by JP), as a person who has it "great" but isn't completely happy and has a "Darkness Within" and how that person deals with it. Think "Burning My Soul" meets "Dark Eternal Night".
9. Dare To Dream (LaBrie) 5:40
A slow DT acoustic song (piano, acoustic guitars, etc) about never giving up on your dreams in life. My favorite line "You only get One chance to Live Life to The Fullest, Take your Aim and Dare To Dream". Think "Hollow Years" meets "Through Her Eyes".
10. Winds of Change (Petrucci) 12:15
Finally, the song about DT's point of view (through JP's lyrics) in the split with MP and the aftermath of moving on. True Prog genius along the lines of "Trial of Tears" and the slow part towards the end of "Lines In The Sand" before it picks up again.
Wow, that was fun! :loser:

It's awesome cause you write it as if you think they are actually going in to record it tomorrow.

"Nevermore" is secretly about Kevin Moore. Haha, just kidding. Two songs were enough.

The extent to which you guys are able to out-cheese each other with these tracklistings is rather impressive :lol

Most of the song titles and albums in this thread sound like an Yngwie Malmsteen album. Just cheesier than Cheesasaurus Rex in a power metal band.

DT 11
1. Don't fuck my wife 2:36 (James Earl Jones reading facebook posts and tweets over JR's spacey sounds)
2. The elation of hope 5:00 (really rocker, groovy song).
3. The dance of the M&M's 8:16 (instrumental)
4. Paciencia y fe 3:23 (melodic, guitar-driven song. No drums).
5. Let me please explain (lyrics by LaBrie. Again no drums).
6. A homage to a friend 7:12 (LaBrie and JR solo piece).
7. Hey guys where's my coffee? 0:10 (JM).
8. We're not ready yet 5:45 (Experimental song with touches of electronica and lyrics about lawyers. Still no drums)
9. The endless silence 4:32 (minimalist approach with guitar, keys and strings).
9. Bosk1 14:18 (epic closer)

After reading this thread, I figured I'd take a shot at this. No Artwork as I wouldn't know how to put it together, but I'm picturing a long shot of a field a wheat, with a lone figure in the foreground headed into the horizon, which has the band's logo.
Never-Ending Journey
To Shake the Earth (7:42): A rocker that is their heaviest album opener since As I Am, this song deals with the drive to succeed.
Collection (5:50): A mid-tempo song that could have been a major single in a different era, this song has strains of early 90's Rush and Queensryche. The lyrics tackle the need to collect and keep the things that fuel our memories.
Dreams Redefined (10:00): A slowly building song that addresses how people often have to change their ideals when their initial dreams don't work out.
Controlled Insanity (8:22): The first full-on instrumental since Stream of Consciousness, this starts with some acoustic guitar then slams into some heavy rocking, with major tempo changes throughout before closing with the acoustic and some haunting keyboards, which segeues nicely into the next song.
Security (4:50): A lovely ballad that comes about as close to radio friendly as DT would ever do, this song deals with the need for people to find emotional stability in their lives.
Waiting for Progress (13:24): A very quirky mini-epic with lyrics that deal with technological and emotional progress at the same time. This song would have a feel of late 80's Fates Warning.
Fields of Grace (22:23): The true epic of the album, this is reminiscent of Spock's Beard meets 70's Genesis meets DT today. It also has the most sweeping outro they've done since Octavarium. I have no idea what the lyrics could come out of a title like that, but they could potentially be amazing.

Sounds a bit to me like DT's worst album.. Systematic Chaos

DT's discography has actually come full circle, and from now on they'll just start releasing previous albums in reverse order. DT 11 will be Systematic Chaos and the pattern will continue as such. However, they will claim that it's all new material, and back this up by clever name alterations (Tripping Into a Really Big Number, Pictures and Text, Dark Nimbus's and Shiny Outer Layers, etc.)

1. The Deadest of Pools
2. Chair Made of Plastic Explosive
Bullseye Saga

4. Ow! My coccyx

end Bullseye Saga

8. I Can Be A Hero Too, Right?
9. Cows Scare the Shit Out of Me
Yeah, not very DT. But I started to do this, then got distracted by reading Deadpool. Came back to do this and this sorta happened. I'm sure someone'll enjoy it.

I remember this post. Was before Mike quit. You should remove his parts.

Hey Chego, what is the Final Absolution series?
It's just a joke. They called it Pt. 1 'cause they thought it'd be funny. Riffing on that prog tradition.

Each "song" will have 11 selectable "movements" a la Six Degrees Disc 2
Making 22 individual "pieces" to imply 2 + 2 = 4 : Marking the first album without a founder member.
Or something...
Anyway - I just hope it has more than 6 - 8 tracks thie time...

Hugh Syme's doing the art again, as you can tell.

The odd thing is, if it was all Syme-y, he could turn this concept into something awesome.
I'm expecting the beach on the new cover. Just you wait.

I'm expecting the beach on the new cover. Just you wait.
I've put a black bar at the bottom with some off-centre text, and used a stock photo of a child. How much Syme-ier do you want me to get?!
-
No no, I mean Syme-y like... if he were to see that as a blueprint and then turn it into photograph collage like he normally does.
-
Hahahaha, I know. Don't worry, I'm just mucking around.
Like I said, dead bored. D:
-
I lol'd when I read the album title.
-
The smiley face with the light on it is a little unnerving. Don't know why.
-
It's a bass clef; which goes together with the album title very nicely.
-
It's a bass clef;
I spend too much time on my computer. ???

/very true
I could see them bringing forward an MP song, but I almost prefer that they didn't and we just love the JM lyrics. Maybe they'll write a Never Enough about Mike, though I don't think the other guys in the band are that whiney.
