Here we are, it's time for the weekly "Bash Cole's Music Taste" part of the thread:
UMH:
Blind Guardian-Sacred Worlds: Well, it most certainly was not better than Nightwish. Not even close, but it was pretty damn good. It's power metal, which when done right (like Falconer
) can be awesome and when done wrong (most of them) is pretty bad. This was on the good end. It was heavy, pretty fast, but the symphony worked well with it. It has many power metal cliches, but I'm cool with that. The singer is pretty good, pretty powerful, but not the best I've heard. Like most power metal songs, this is made during the chorus, which is fucking awesome. It's a headbanger singalong which is why I tend to love the power metal that I do like. This was the best song of a rather iffy round over all. I was debating whether this should get a 5 or a 6, and I'm going to be generous. What leads me to say this is going to get a 6 is that I will most definitely check out this album after all is said and done. Falconer and Nightwish are still much better. 6/7 +1 for being the best song of the round making it a 7/7
lonestar:
Black Country Communion-The Outsider: This song had a lot of potential, but I feel it just didn't quite live up to it. With obvious influences from Deep Purple and Zeppelin, this had the opportunity to transport me to the 70's, but something felt amiss. It just didn't connect right to give me the great classic rock vibe. It wasn't a bad song by any means, and it had its moments, but I just don't feel it was all it could be. With Bonham drumming and Hughes singing, it can't be bad. It was probably Sherinian. Why do proggers always have to fuck everything up? I kid. It was a decent song overall and I have no qualms with giving it a 4. 4/7
Lat:
Sigh-The Transfiguration Fear:
Yeah, this risk did not pay off. Fucking Japanese people...Anyway, dude, what in the blue hell is this? Seriously, it's like circus black metal put on LCD and set on fire. I just don't really like it, and I actually feel pretty bad for knocking on what you call your favorite album of 2012 so far, but seriously, this is just too much for me. I don't even like Black Metal save for Agalloch, so yeah, this really is not for me. This is not one of the worst songs I've ever heard, but I certainly would not listen to this again. Oh, and I expect much flaming. 2/7
ariich:
Nightingale-Fields of Life: Ah, cool. I heard Dan Swano has an excellent voice and it is true. This is a pretty good song dude. It's heavy, it's epic, and it's just a pretty good song. Like Justin's song, and like most power metal, the song is made in the chorus. It's pretty hooky and what I like about this song is the inclusion of the synth. Usually, I like the basic instruments and any weird ass folky shit they can throw at me, but here, the synth worked great. Not much to say other than it was a pretty good song and I'll check this album out after the entire roulette is over. I wouldn't call it a "very good" song so it's going to get a 5, but know that I really thought it was good. 5/7
Sigz:
Shpongle-The Dorset Perception: Another wtf song.
This was really weird. I mean, I dug the bongos and strings and the almost tribally/islandy feel, but then the song got kinda weird. I felt like I was listening to the chick from The Grudge sing for a while.
This truly is music I have never heard before and it certainly is interesting, but is it "good"? Um...meh. It is long, too long for my liking. For most of the song, I felt like I was stuck in the middle of an island with a bunch of people playing weird music while smoking some herb and roasting a pig on a cooking spit.
You know, as I'm listening to it, it isn't that bad. It's pretty interesting in it's musicianship. It wasn't bad, but I probably won't listen to it again. Nevertheless, here's a 3. 3/7
DTVT:
Dorian Gray-Lair of the White Worm: Hmm...a DTFr's band. No wonder I couldn't find anything on the internet except some info about a Croatian band. Well, that sucks because this is pretty cool stuff. Wicked wicked guitar and the singer is pretty badass. It's almost like normal heavy metal and power metal had a baby and this was the product. I do have qualms with the overall production, as the drums are a little low, the guitars are a little loud, and the singer could be a bit more in the front of the mix, but when you aren't famous, it's hard to get a decent mix. Overall, the song was good. I will definitely check out the EP after the roulette if most of the music sounds like this. Oh, and the breakdown is so fucking heavy. Like, my brain hurts from the heavy. Like ariich's, I was struggling to decide whether this should get a 5 or a 6, and like ariich's, I went with a 5, but this was pretty badass. 5/7
Ravenheart:
Vast-Here: Hmm...this is an interesting song. It sounds familiar but I can't really place it. You seem to have a thing for industrial metal, which isn't bad for me. The music here is pretty damn heavy and I like the singer, but to me, it feels like the whole is weaker than the sum of its parts. I don't know why, but the song just doesn't click for me to go crazy about it. It isn't bad, and it's even better than a 3, but it just doesn't completely captivate me enough for anything more than a 4. It could be that this is not that great of a song to show someone who has not listened to the band. I don't know. Anyway, it wasn't bad, by any means, and I think it totally deserves a 4.
Shake:
Talk Talk-Wealth: Hmm, I don't quite know what to make of this song. This is definitely a "less is more" approach and I'm just not sure if it works. I like the dude's voice and I dig the almost spiritual feel of the whole thing with what seems to me to be an organ. I must say, you have continually sent shit that I didn't know even existed which is pretty cool. I was thinking about what to give this song, and I really don't know.
I don't exactly like it, but it isn't offensive to my ear cavity, so that's a good thing. Considering I probably won't try to listen to something like this again, I'll give it a 3. 3/7
Ok, here are the scores as of right now:
UMH-35
Sigz-27
lonestar-27
Ravenheart-27
ariich-26
Lat-24
Shake-20
DTVT-20
Round 7 is open. It is the last round before the finals, and considering Sigz, lonestar, Ravenheart, ariich, and maybe Lat can all end up with a spot in the finals, what I'll do is, in the event of a tie, I'll take the best song from those guys. Is that cool for everyone?
