My searching skills turned up nothing, so I decided to start my own thread.
How many of you here have tattoo's? I'm completely in love with them, I think it's a great way to express yourself. I only have one at the moment, but it's one I'm really proud of, and I'm hoping to book time to get another soon.

My girlfriend also have one that she got just a few weeks ago, and it really stunned me! It's amazing, and I'm really happy for her it turned out so good. :)

I've showed mine, now show me yours! :heart
-
Tattoos are cool! In the future I might get a small one on my wrist or ankle, those are awesome. But at the moment I have none. I'm more of a piercing person anyway.
-
I have the majesty logo on my left shoulder and if Silver Tears even thinks of posting a particular picture of it, there will be swift retaliation.
-

Oh, I've got one of those as well. :eyebrows:
Also, what's up with the weird spelling? ???
-
I got one 3 weeks ago. Here is a cam pic:

It's on the left side of my chest under my arm.
No plans for any other tattoos

This might be dumb, but...

I don't get the spelling of "tattoo". Two T's and two O's? What's up with that?
-
Oh, I thought you were changing the word "piercing" to something more dirty. :lol
Also, you spelled it that way yourself? It's the correct way to spell it.
-
I have 16 hours of work in me, but I don't yet have a updated picture of the work I just got completed last week. I will post all of my tattoo pictures together once this work heals and I have a new picture of it.
-

Do you WANT me to change it to something dirty? ;)
Yeah, I know it's the correct spelling. But I just figured it has to have some kind of meaning. Some kind of history or something. And I'm WAY to lazy to google it myself...
-
Okay, so impatience got the best of me. Here are the pics I have of all my work, but the last pic is old and outdated - I had some extra shading added last Thursday to complete it so a new photo will follow probably by next week sometime.

I have the Sepultura "S" in black on my right shoulder.
My wife got a belly button piercing about just over a year ago...it still hasn't healed properly..it keeps absessing one way or another....she's tried sea salt, leaving it alone....everything but rubbing alcohol(which by all accounts you shouldn't use) she's pretty fed up and is ready to take it out.

Fuckin Moltres! :metal :metal

Except not - it's just a phoenix I drew.

I have 'ANIMAL LIBERATION' on my left arm... not really got any great pictures of it, but you can kinda see the location here :

Really want the Majesty symbol, but not decided whereabouts on my body to get it yet. Thoughts?
-
Back of the neck.
-
Naw... I rarely wear my hair up and I want it visible. I'm thinking either centre of my back, or a shoulder, or... well, I'd love it on my wrist but that slightly scares me.
I might just get it on the top of my thigh or something where I can show it off if I want to but don't always have to. I kinda just wanna know it's there, but also want to be able to show it off loads. It is only a matter of time now.

I wanted the dredg tattoo on my back but I ended up choosing the side because I wanted to see it without a mirror. Anyway if you'd be fine with it on your back I think it'd look good between the shoulder blades.
-
Between the shoulder blades could be cool.
I think my next work will either be something to fill space on my left shoulder or, more likely, a shoulder spanner.

addictive aren't they Hype?

I was kidding :lol

Sorry, didn't see a tattoo, I was too busy staring at your awesome shirt.
-

Of course. I knew before I got my first that I'd want two; knew getting #2 that I'd want 3; knew before getting #3 that I wanted to expand #1, etc.

Damnit, I want to share the new tattoo pic - should be healed by Thursday/Friday.

Thats mine. Its Tengwar script and it stands for something motivational for me.
A fuckin bug bit me really bad, thats the dark spot over the tat. I am so angry, i hope when it clears it doesn't spoil the tat.

JUST DO IT ALREADY.. because i want one but idk what to get imo lawl
-
:neverusethis: <- who'll be the first DTFer to tattoo this one?
I'd totally do it.
Actually, I'm going to get a tattoo(s) at some point, though I'm not completely certain what. I'm definitely going to get the Opeth symbol somewhere, and I have a few other simple designs that I like, but I need money and such, so these probably won't happen for a few years, which is alright.
-
I've been considering getting a tattoo too, but I dunno what to get/where and it won't be happening anytime soon.
-
*offers services....*

You'll be first to know if I do decide to go ahead and get a tattoo, Hyperplex.

Sweet. :)

Yep. At this point I think I have my first two tattoos planned out (at least what they'll be, if not where), but if I want another you'll definitely be my go-to guy.

DO IT
-
Oh man I really, really want to now. It'll have to wait another two years at least though.
-
How come?
-
There's no way I'm going to have the spare money to afford something that big while I'm still in college.
-
It's an expensive addiction.
-
Aww. :(
-

If you cut down on the masturbating, you can save hundreds of dollars on tissues, and put that towards your tattoo.
-
Yeah but I don't mind waiting. I'd like to be certain that any tattoo I get is something I really want, so the additional time is probably a good thing. The other two I've had planned for a year already, so those'll be up first.

What are the other two gonna be?
-
One's the Opeth symbol and the other's a very minimal design of Jupiter and it's moons the way Galileo saw them the first time he looked at Jupiter through a telescope. It's not sci-fi art like this: https://www.dailygalaxy.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/06/24/two_planets_by_icexsaint.jpg or anything it's basically just circles but it holds a lot of meaning for me.
-
Oh the Opeth symbol looks really good. And yeah, tattoos with special meanings are always nice :)
-
one ring to rule them all?
lol the first thing I though of but I really like that script.
I was thinking of getting another tattoo with something that is motivational to me, but that's a little bit away.
-
All of my tattoos have some meaning to me, especially the big piece I just got finished. I've drawn them all and have put meaning and symbolism into all of them. They really do mean a lot to me, regardless of whether other people see them or if they are covered.
-
tengwar script
What does it say? I'm a bit rusty :P
-
Tengwar script is used for many different languages, so it's hard to say... Which language is it in, soundgarden?
-
Yeah, I know it's the correct spelling. But I just figured it has to have some kind of meaning. Some kind of history or something. And I'm WAY to lazy to google it myself...
Word History: Although the practice of tattooing the body is very old, the English word tattoo is relatively new. The explorer Captain James Cook (who also gave us the word taboo ) introduced the word to English speakers in his account of a voyage around the world from 1768 to 1771. Like taboo, tattoo comes from Polynesian languages such as Tahitian and Samoan. The earliest use of the verb tattoo in English is found in an entry for 1769 in Cook's diary. Sailors introduced the custom into Europe from the Pacific societies in which it was practiced, and it has remained associated with sailors, although many landlubbers now get tattoos as well.

I should get around to taking some pictures of my tattoos one of these days, but they're nothing impressive. Impulsive tramp stamp when I was 18, dragonfly between my shoulder-blades... and my favourite, a treble clef on my right hip.

There is still some healing to finish, but it looks good enough to share. Right arm, finished for now:

I assume that's some kind of LOTR thing?
I was gonna get a tattoo, but my arms are too skinny and of course there's the whole, against my culture, thing.
-
Nope, nothing Lord of the Rings in it at all, other than the presence of a ring. The symbolism is very personal to me and incredibly meaningful.

Yea, it was the ring that the two eyes (I assume they'e eyes) just reminded me of it. But it's a very cool looking tattoo.

Extremely.
However, you can continue picturing me as a tall, smooth black man if it so pleases you.

I'd rprefer to see the unedited copy of that pool pic. I missed it the first time you unknowingly posted it.

Yes, they are eyes. Thanks. :) 9 hours totalto complete it from the initial tattoo seven years ago to the shading I had completed last week.

Got the jitters...I have a 4:00 appointment at a place in the East Village... I've been toying with the idea for a while, and actually going for it was sort of a last-minute/belated birthday thing...
I'll post pics later.
-
What are you getting?
Offer still stands for designing future work...
And pre-tattoo jitters are awesome; they make the process that much more awesome. (I love getting tattooed, in case you couldn't tell.)
-
Oh, hyperplex... if I didn't already have a Husband who's good at design stuff I'd so ask you to fix me up!
Husband is good enough, though. He knows what I want, but pushes it so it looks better than I imagine it could be.
-
I'd still love to do something for you. There's no law that says the same guy has to design every piece you have. It's all good, though; I don't want to step on his turf. ;)
-
If I got a tattoo it'd probably be John Bonham's trinity logo on my right shoulder/bicep.

A coral snake, wrapped around my right upper arm, below the King Crimson (Tibetan sun/moon) tattoo.
Part of it is practically in my armpit, which hurt like a mother (especially the shading). 2.5 hours in the chair, all said and done. I could have lasted maybe five more minutes. Made my previous tattoos seem like childs play...
It looks awesome, and the artist even took pics for his portfolio.
There's a spot on my left calf that I'm reserving for one of yours, I think. Just have to come up with an idea of what I want. There's another one I have nearly planned, where I may seek your assistance for part of it, as well.

Sweeeeet. Looking forward to it.

Hey guys, out of interest, how do you decide on what you want as a tattoo? I've been considering it for some time, but keep being indecisive but obviously need to be absolutely sure of it.
of course there's the whole, against my culture, thing.
So get it somewhere that you can hide it?
-

Tattoos can be quite badass, but are far too permanent for my tastes. You guys have some awesome looking ones though. :tup
-
Just hit me up if/when you guys want stuff. I'll see what I can do.
-
Don't remember who had what, but whoever had that King Crimson one is badass :metal
I know Mike Portnoy has one, but I forgot if anyone on here as a Frank Zappa mustache tattoo, 'cause those are awesome
And like I said before, I'm strongly leaning towards getting John Bonham's trinity symbol on my shoulder/bicep
-

That would be me, and thank you!

Personally, I want my tattoos to be unique to me, rather than related to something else. I've designed all of mine and that makes them more perosnal to me.
I tend to create my designs and then put them some place where I'll see it for several hours every day for about 6 months (like my desk at work). If I still love it and want it after that time, I'm usually pretty sure it'll be good in my skin.

That's quite a good idea actually.

I sort of co-opted the KC tattoo...more than a statement of love for the band, it's about the aesthetic that the band's music from that era represents: Something fragile and delicate, within something corrosiver and acidic. Beyond the aesthetic, to me it is also more broadly about my own duality, embracing both the primal and the intellectual, and having them be in harmony rather than opposition.
Generally, I will see an image that somehow resonates with me. Gradually, the image will evolve in my mind, and I put a finer point on what it means to me. Given enough time, I will have an image that means enough to me that I will want to make it a part of me. Unfortunately, I lack the motor skills the even draw a straight line when aided by a ruler, to say nothing of drawing a tattoo, so I have to rely on others for help with the image itself.

I have a four leaf clover on my right back/hip and a kanji symbol for prosperity on the back of my neck. Both solid black.

of course there's the whole, against my culture, thing.

Not quite the point.

I actually saw something recently on an emerging Jewish subculture that embraced tattooing, specifially tattoos that pertained to Judiasm...Star of David on the elbow, the same way other people do spiderwebs, and stuff like that.
-
Yea, lots of non religious jews get tattoos. I find it funny when they get religious tattoos. It would be like a bunch of christians spelling out "I love jesus" in burning bibles.

I'm really beginning to want to fill my upper left arm, too but i don't want to ruin the look of the armband or my phoenix. Perhaps in a few months/years ill revisit it and see about filling it up. I loved having my other arm filled so it's something i might really entertain thoughts on.
Also might want to cap my right arm above my shoulder and get something across my shoulders on my back.

To be fair, it does look kinda cool. Excellent work. No way in hell I'd wear it, though.

I have a tattoo on my breastbone that I put on using a peice of thread wraped around a sharpened staple melted into a plastic spoon.
the ink was also home-made, using soot from burning vaseline, and babyoil, under a paper bag and mixing the soot with dandruff shampoo and a drop of water.
It hurt, the staple was sharpened by rubbing it on the cement floor.
-
Basically a prison tattoo.

Authentic prison tattoo, cause thats where I was, when I put it on.
got one on my arm too, that I got while there as well.

I :heart you, John.
Okay, I think I posted in the last thread but it's been a while and I got a new one today! :D
Here they are in the order that I got them-
Majesty- got this at 18, crappy old picture and it's not in the best shape today either:
Infinity- got it at 19, it's a lot more faded now, which I think looks better because here it almost looks fake:
Copyright date- got this one at 20:

I've thought about getting the Majesty symbol on my arm but doubt I could ever green light it.

Pretty fuckin' sweet, Ian.
For those who haven't seen it yet, the updated version of the latest tatt:

Except I injured it a few days ago and it may be scarred on the W :( :( >:(

i saw a great idea for a tat on the inside of the new In Flames disc...the Crow sitting on the box with the clock...very cool looking.

Hello everybody! A new member here, and here's my tattoo. ;)
It's basically from an Opeth song, The Ghost of Perdition, where Mike says 'Keeper of holy whores'. That sentence really got to me and one of my lady friend, so I decided to get this tattoo.
I also have a new idea for a DT tattoo for me: write 'Trapped inside this Octavarium' on my left wrist, it will be like a wristband, because that's what Octavarium it, isn't it? Things end where they started. ;)
-
When I can get afford a tattoo, I'm getting one of my favorite John Baizley pieces.
-
That is sorta creepy.
-
That would be an awesome tattoo, assuming you get it big enough to hold all the detail.
-
I should have tattoos, but I don't.
I can't afford them.
If I had my druthers, my body would be covered.

Never knew this thread was here. Haven't gone thru all four pages yet, but will later today. I've posted both of these in the post your pic thread, but it's appropriate to re-post here.
Got this 22 years ago.

I'm impressed at the size of the tattoos here, I thought most people liked small ones in secret places, but the ones here are huge!
-
I've had this beauty since 2003--pic does not represent what it looks like now though. Need to get it recolored--it's faded since I first got it.

Only tat I have so far, and it's on my upper right arm (bicep?).

Well, I don't really see the point in making it so small/so hidden people can't see it. Mine took 4 hours and a hell of a lot of candy, I'm sure as hell gonna flash it! :hat

Nice... I think I'm ready for my tramp stamp but I also want to get something for my uncle on the three-year anniversary of his death in March. It's a concept in my head that needs to be designed by someone more artistically talented than me.

two words for you tattoo rookies......SUN BLOCK

Oops, wrong thread.
-
Guys, you're gonna kill me but I covered up my DT tatt. Pics coming soon...
Why did you do that????
-
It was a shitty old tattoo that wasn't worth touching up because, quite frankly, I'm not nearly enough into DT anymore.
-
It's comments like that that make me think twice whenever I consider getting my majesty tat
-
It's comments like that that make me think twice whenever I consider getting my majesty tat
That's why it's always suggested that you wait and REALLY think about what you want. Hell, I wanted my first tat to be a silver crescent moon with a purple star hanging off of it. And YES, I would've regretted getting that done. :lol It took me 8 years to get my first and only, and I got the Alice in Chains Dirt sun as drawn by Layne Staley since he'd died in 2002 and, at that time, AiC was my favorite band. Yes, it's cliche, but to me it was more about having Layne's art on me permanently as a tribute to him - he's in my Top 10 singers of all time.
I will say that I want my second one to be the Majesty logo, but that's because I've been a DT fan for about as long as I've been an AiC fan and I don't see that changing any time soon. While I'm disappointed that Jackie got hers covered, SHE wasn't happy with it and she's really not into DT anymore. It was her call to do that, regardless if we agree or not. Just because that was her decision doesn't necessarily mean and follow that it will be yours too.
-
I've just always wondered what would happen if i get it and lose Interest down the line. I dont think I will and i already have the line from Octavarium tatted...
Idk
-
Yeah, but AFAIR that was a tribute to your Pops. Yes?
-
Yup
-
IMO, that's different from just getting something because it looks cool or something for a band you like "just because" and then a few years down the line you don't even listen to that band anymore. If you honestly do not see that happening with you and DT, why NOT get the Majesty logo?
It is impossible to predict what'll happen in the future, but... I can only say that, for me, when (not if) I do get the Majesty logo tatted on me I won't regret it.
-
I wouldn't regret it even if I fall out of love with a band; it just means I loved them enough at the time and that they helped me become who I am. But when I do a DT tat, it probably won't be the Majesty logo, but pieces of album art (IAW and Awake) and quotes, like I said in the previous thread. Though, maybe I get a Majesty logo afterwards, who knows :D
But before that, there are little tattoos for each of my shoulders to be done: the words "Navigating by the stars" will be the first one, and this will be the other one:
I can't wait to actually do them in a couple of years.
-
Wow, I really like the imagery of that one.
-
Me too - that's really unique as well.
-
It's not unique, I snagged it off of an album cover  Five gold stars for the person who figures out which one first.

-
Now that Faye's posted her Majesty tat, I want one. :( :lol
-
Do itttt! I'm so happy with it. Ever since I first got into DT about seven or eight years ago I knew I fancied a Majesty tattoo, I loved and still do love them more than any other music I've ever heard, and just knew that they'd be a big part of my life for as far into the future as I can see. And I love tattoos for the committment and permanence, making something you're passionate about an indelible part of your body for the rest of your life (I have one other animal rights related tattoo got for similar reasons).
Keep forgetting it's their and then remembering and feeling over the moon :) How long have you been into DT?
-
Oh, I will get one - if not this year, then hopefully next year. The only one I have so far is an Alice in Chains related one - I got it as a tribute to Layne Staley (RIP :( ) and on my birthday next year I'll have had it for 10 years. Time flies. :eek
I've been into DT since late 1992/early 1993, which is about as long as I've been into AiC too. :)
-
As soon as I pay my parents back which shouldn't take too long, I'll be getting the Devin Townsend Project logo. I figure it'll be a good first tattoo and I can judge from there whether I could stand getting a detailed one such as a john baizley piece :D
-
666 Likes of Faye's tattoo on DT's FB page ... and counting.
-
I waited till I was 43 years old (my avatar picture) to get my first. It is a mix of alot of things. The image of the sacred heart DT used/uses, mixed in with my twin sons initials in the 2 vines, and the vines also stand for 2 losses via miscarriages in my life (well ex wife and a girfriend from many years ago (loooong story). My second is on my arm which is the names and birth dates of my sons. Going in 1 month for some more work, a picture of my dog that passed away 2 years ago.
whoops, forgot I already posted them here. I well. I will post my new one when i get it.

I am getting a new one too.. Just need a nice DT design....

:omg:
-
Was that a horrible tattoo or was the picture quality beyond terrible?
-
I don't have any. Closest I came was about 20 years ago, I designed a very intricate crest that is similar to the House Of Lords logo crest (see the logo in the upper right on James Christian's page: https://www.jameschristianmusic.com/home.html). I loved it, and the fact that I designed and drew it made it more special. Problem was, I wanted it on my shoulder, but it was so intricate that the couple of artists I took it to said they couldn't do it unless they made it a lot bigger, which would have required putting it on my back or somewhere else, and I really didn't want to do that. So, yeah, never got it done.
EDIT: There's a much better pic of that log down the page a bit if you scroll down to the cover art for the Big Money album.
EDIT2: Or...I could just post it:
Basically, it was that. But I changed the griffins a bit (I think I may have made one into a dragon, but I can't recall), and changed the shield considerably. I also made the vine work more intricate and had some things hidden in the vine work that were very meaningful and had significance to events in my life.
-
Was that a horrible tattoo or was the picture quality beyond terrible?
Well, it wasn't an exact replica of the SFAM cover, but it may have just been after 1 or 2 sittings. That's a big enough job it would take a few I'm sure.
-
:woot:
I made DT's FB page too. Not sure I'll be able to top Faye's 1,241 'likes' though. I'm sure a lot of those likes are for more than just the tattoo.

In a nutshell someone who saw the picture sent me a message and somehow out of all the messages I got chatting to him about music, anyway we ended up having a few skype conversations over the course of a couple of weeks and he kept saying he was going to fly to come and see me etc. and I was like yeah, right... and then he did. It was cool, we hung out for a week, made a new friend. Still pretty surprised somebody would fly that far just to see someone based on a tattoo, it was prettttttttty random.
-
But weirdly enough he was the only person I ended up speaking to through facebook due to the tattoo sharing on DT's page and then all of that happened. Really strange but an adventure! lol

That's very cool n_c.... I don't find it that strange... Anyone would fly to have a week with you if they can... Good times

I used to be much more up for internet meeting, but since the 4/1 meetup I regret that I haven't seen anyone from here in person. It would be cool to hang with everyone and meet some of the new faces with whom I've become close, though. Facebook is about as personal as I get save for a few that I text/chat with.

I want more so badly....I want to fill the space between and around my armband and my phoenix. I think, though, that I will I have to defer to my tattoo guy for advice on that, since it's more "background filler" than a new design. I've designed all of mine so far so it's a bit of personal letting go that has to be done.
Plus it will be a bit emotional since my tattoo artist who completed my large piece passed away this past May from complications due to leukemia. :(

So that is four... for now :lol I have no idea where would I get my DT ones; somewhere where I could show them off, but also hide them when necessary? Maybe somewhere above the knee so if I am gonna wear shorter stuff when I go to work (assuming people don't become accepting of tattoos in a few years), I can cover them up with thick stockings or something.
-
^I like how simple that is.
Been a long time coming, but here's my first:

what is it?
-
It's the signature I use on all of my artwork. It has a long and arduous meaning behind it, but the short answer is signature :) The background is just watercolor marks in blue, red and violet.
-
Ok. That is pretty awesome.

Saw this shared on FB, it is similar to a design I want to have done, but I would want mine smaller.

Damn.
And ThroughHerEyesDude, very cool!

I posted this in the Rush thread but didn't realize there was a thread here as well. Got my first tattoo on June 20th, based on this bit of Rush artwork:
I was/am super happy with the work on the skull, but the crown does leave some things to be desired. Thankfully two of my major issues will be easy to get touched up and I'll have that done on the 11th. The top center jewel is off center, so I'll likely have the jewel next to it enlarged and have one added between the two on top that is centered. And around that top nob the jewels on one side come down to meet the red and on the other side do not, so I'll have that fixed.
And this isn't a good picture either really, just the first one I took when I got home.
-
I see exactly what you're pointing out. On first glance, it isn't really all that noticeable - but once you see it, you can't un-see it. Did your artist not use a stencil/template? Seems like pretty basic stuff (symmetry) that a top notch artist wouldn't mess up
-

Well, let me go through my experience at this place. It came recommended by three different friends, and so I stopped in with my gf who was also planning a tattoo and went over with them what I wanted, asked them who they'd recommend for the work, and made my appointment. I went home, checked out the work by my artist, and liked it. The week went by and I came in and the artist that was supposed to do my tattoo had gotten backed up by a pack (4 girls getting similar tattoos) a bit earlier and I either had to wait a bit or have someone else do it. Wasn't happy with this (as it was already 5pm and I wanted to have the tat done for the Rush show the next day), but I looked at the girls book and she had some fantastic work.
Now I know she was not working off of her own stencil, and hadn't really prepared to do this particular tattoo, and that might have played a role in the mistakes in the crown. The skull is something they do so regularly I'm guessing that's why it came out so well while the crown not as much. Also, the original image doesn't have the crown sitting perfectly on the skull, and I thought she did alright with most of it.
And further, I honestly didn't catch those things I mentioned on the stencil or right after, but as you saw, once I did see it, there is no unseeing it.

Also, I was chatting with Hyperplex earlier, and I might make some additions to this tattoo. It was a 3hr process and my first time so it was quite a leap to begin with, but not that I have it I wish I would have known I'd like having it so much. It's something I've wanted for a long time and always imagined that image there, but I wish I would have gotten the red stars put into the eye sockets.
I also am considering some kind of ovular, diamond, or rounded diamond border around it to house the alchemy symbols from Clockwork Angels. Andrew suggested possibly leaving the border out and going with ghosted symbols, which may be the way to go due to the size of the tattoo already on my arm.
-
I see exactly what you're pointing out. On first glance, it isn't really all that noticeable - but once you see it, you can't un-see it. Did your artist not use a stencil/template? Seems like pretty basic stuff (symmetry) that a top notch artist wouldn't mess up
Well, let me go through my experience at this place.
Now that you mention it, the tat matches the picture in regards to how the crown sits. Quit being such a whiny bitch! :lol
Maybe the Clockwork Angels clock on your other shoulder?

Nope, that is where the Majesty symbol will go. :D

Dammit, I have some sketches of what I'd like to do with this tattoo, but the copier/scanner/faxer/ubersized super machine in my office is currently offline and needing to be fixed.
-
I'm still going to work on your other request. If I ever have some free moments, I'll put some stuff together.
Also, I'll leave it up to Nem to post, but I did design her next tattoo...I think I made a thread about it back when I drew it in February. I need to design more...
-
Thank you!
As for what I was talking about earlier, here are some sketches. I think the diamond especially looks great on paper, but likely not on my arm.

I'm planning on a half sleeve for my left arm. Half for now, then when I don't have to worry about jobs, I'll full sleeve that bitch.
-
Working on my half sleeve for my right arm (mostly pinups, more traditional style). But I refused to leave without some 'new' ink- So I got the heart I'd been wanting forever.

I've been branded! AKUMA everywhere!
Don't mind my caveman hairs. /40YEAROLDVIRGINSCENEFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-
To me, this symbol means resolve...that's all. (It's from a manga called Berserk, and it's a 'curse brand'; in the story, people who have it are forever haunted by demons) I am now...addicted. I'm probably going to get another soon. No one told me tattoos were addictive.

That's pretty sweet! I like that it's a "colorized" version of the artwork. I always thought the black and white was kinda dull. Also, this makes it unique.
-
Ditto. That's fuckin' awesome. I'm thinking of getting my next tat on my shoulder-arm-area. The chest hurt really fucking bad. :lol Not even going to make out that it didn't hurt like a bitch. I'm also a bitch. I got up off the table and it was SOAKED with a literal outline of my body with sweat. :rollin Fuggin.......
I'm not one for extravagant art like that, mainly because I'm afraid of both the pain and the artist's ability, but also because I'd like my tattoos to look as if they were something other than tattoos. For the one I got, I was going for a 'brand'. The next I'm getting, I'll be going for a militaristic emblem...that is also from a manga/anime. :P
But that...that looks awesome. I'm afraid to get any type of musical tattoo...the only one I've considered is Porcupine Tree and/or Steven Wilson type tattoo. Even DT would be something I'd probably regret. Especially due to the fact that I dislike their newer music now....sadly. But it'd either be PT or Radiohead if I did get a musically inspired tattoo.
THESE THINGS PEEL LIKE A MOTHERFUCKER.
-
That ToT tat is beautiful -tear-

Thanks, I appreciate it. Yea I've seen many different DT tattoos but not too many TOT covers out there. I am a fan of the heavier DT stuff so naturally TOT is high on my list. But as far as album art goes, its definitely my favorite.

That's some sick ink bro!!!!

Pretty badass!

Bleh, this is a legitimate post.
I got another tattoo, you can see the first one above it (or a few pages back). But the new one is Iron Maiden's Powerslave "Sphinx" Eddie:

So guys, I'm thinking of getting this for my first tattoo ever. Of course it's Rush related. What do you think?

I want to add one thing to it. The hand written P/G around it somewhere.

Yesterday, a friend who I'd commissioned to design a tattoo for me finished it! It turned out pretty great and I can't wait to get it tattoo'd onto me, which should hopefully be happening sometime soon.

Interesting choice for something 'Rush related'. Only old school fans would get that. Never knew that GUP was your fave. As long as it's something meaningful, that's all that matters when it comes to tattoos
-
Power Windows is my favorite Rush album but I think that tattoo would be so unique and like you said Rush fans would get it.

My girlfriend have designed what will be my next tattoo. It's my guitar and I debated for a long time if I would include the name I gave her (the guitar) on the tattoo but eventually decided it might be a bad idea to tattoo a girl's name on my arm. :lol

I'm getting pretty close to #3, I just haven't made up my mind about what I want yet. I know I want it to be something to do with music. I'm just not sure what.
-
Having browsed through this thread, it's pretty clear to me I will never get a tattoo. The reaction to every picture was "hell no would I ever want that on my arm!" :lol
(Totally respecting you guys' decision though)
-
I've thought about getting a tattoo, and even have an idea of what I'd want. It's the cost and the process that keeps me from doing it.
-
I made a pact with a mate a few years ago that we would both get tattoos of our football team's crest when we next won the Premier League. I'm a Liverpool fan and we were top with 3 games left and threw it away. Not sure if that's a good thing or not

Get a full back tattoo of 'The ANABASIS' first Albums artwork. To this day I think that's easily in my top five Band cover artwork....it's pretty friggin' cool.
-
I just put down my deposit on Saturday to have my half sleeve drawn up. This will be the first time ever I've my tattoo artist draw it up, rather than bringing in my own design. I'm finishing my upper left arm, around my phoenix and arm band. He quoted roughly 7 hours total in 2 sittings to knock out the new ink and enhancing the existing. I'll get a call when he's got a drawing for me to check out and then I'll book time in the chair to zap the beast out.
Beyond psyched.

Getting ready to have my second work done in honor of my third year of sobriety. Either going to get my date done on my wrist, in Tengwar Elven script cause I'm a dork like that, or get the stump from the Giving Tree on my upper arm. Decisions, decisions.....

Tomorrow's the day! After this week from hell (ridiculously busy at work; long story), I'll be sitting for several hours tomorrow afternoon/evening for the first session on my half sleeve.
I've been pumped for this for months; I'm excited as hell and can't wait.
-
Ugh
It's tattoo season in our neighborhood.. My cousin's fiance, who is a tattoo artist, came down for a tattoo convention over the weekend... and now he is up with us working on my other cousin's husband's coverup, and is going to work on Panda's sleeve. I'm trying to convince my buddy to get his Majesty tat while he's here but he doesn't want to pay the $100 he would charge him. It's funny because most of the parlors around here won't even touch you for at least $125.
Also... I an back to pondering the tats I want to get. Along with my hammers from The Wall, I think I want to get the engine from the cover of Black Label Society's "The Blessed Hellride" done some day... another tat in memory of my dad...

5-hour session yesterday, pretty fucking intense. 8 hours of new work so far, probably another 3-5 to finish everything off.

I have some bitchin scars! Anybody want to see them? :tick2:

Shit Drew, that thing's beastly.
All that's left is to color the flames in the upper portion, fill the clouds around my phoenix in a lighter grey, go over the phoenix and some portions of my armband, and maybe touch up some of the grey portions, depending on how they heal.
This was easily the most intense and definitely the longest session I've ever had. 5 hours is a long-ass time to get tattooed. I'm hoping for only one more session to knock the rest out but we shall see. Plus my guy is fucking awesome and he even knocked $200 off yesterday's session price.
-
Booked what will hopefully be the final session for my half sleeve. Aug 23rd for another 4-5 hours should wrap it up.
-
Sweet. Come fall I will be getting my next one, but haven't actually decided which design yet (I have a very long list :lol). Possibly the Zappa tramp stamp. Oh yes.
-
Done.

Nice!

Thursday I went to a tattoo shop to start the process for ink #2. Should get a sketch around Monday or Tuesday from him, and will share it... I think you guys will like.
-
I've stopped counting tattoos by number and instead measure by total hours in the chair. Hah.
-
Well, first tattoo was in the 4 to 4.5 hour range. This one will probably be similar.
-
I'm up to 28 total on me; 9 on my right arm, 19 on my left.
Not done yet, though. Probably thinking of adding a cap to my right shoulder and maybe...MAYBE...drawing up something to go across my shoulders on my back.
-
Here's what I was sent.

So guys, I have no Tattoos, but always wanted to get one. The thing here is that I have some doubts that maybe you can clarify.
Can you get a white tattoo? It's something common? It looks good? There's anything I should know about?
You all seem to have experience in this so maybe you can help me.

This depends on what you are looking for. There are two kinds of white inks for tattoos: white ink used for mixing and highlighting regular tattoos and white ink made specifically for a white only tattoo. I recommend reading this: https://tattoos.lovetoknow.com/White_Ink_Tattoos
If you're referring to normal white ink, you have to understand a bit about how tattooing works. Tattoos are different from most art because the pigment does beneath the substrate instead of on top. For that reason, only pigment that is darker than the translucent shade of the skin will show up clearly. In my tattoos, white has been used as a mixer and as a highlighter, but without the surrounding pigments and designs, it wouldn't be very noticeable. The simple answer to your question is no, normal white ink won't look like you've painted white on your skin.
Take a look at the article I linked about white ink tattoos and see if that answers any more of your questions about them.
Update to my tattoo: I'm 90% healed on the last session of my sleeve and I am loving it. I'm already thinking about the next thing I want, so I think I'll have to temper myself a bit.
-
I'm thinking of getting a tattoo of my avatar on my face or butt. Like covering my entire face. Anyone? Also, instead of having :neverusethis: what about having :burns: tattooed somewhere on your body

Thanks, man. That answers some of my questions.
I will research more about this. If can't be done I will do it with regular ink.
I just wanted to do a tiny Dark Side of the Moon kind of thing, with the white ink being the light beam and the edges of the prism.
-
If you have light skin, that can be done with shading around your skin, which is the "white" part. Do an image search for "Dark Side of the Moon tattoo" and see a bunch of examples of how people have done it.

I have not the lightest of skins. But I thought about doing it like that just that may be better with white.

New tat! And updated my first tat because it got scrubbed on accident a bit when it was first healing.
Please do not mind my man boobs, if you do, they will give you a boner and/or get you soaked. They do in fact lactate. I get that question a lot. Also, for 20 bucks shaved off my bill, I let the tattoo artist, who is bi an has a crush on me, shave my entire chest, which is why I look like a fairy boy. Fun facts of life. GOOD STUFF!! For anyone bored:
The red satanic looking symbol is called a curse brand. I'm not badass enough to get an actual brand so I thought I'd get a tattoo that is meant to look like a brand, I thought it came out pretty good but am still getting it worked on and am gonna go back in a few weeks to get some more background work done. To me, it represents the tenacity of humans and the will of resolve.
The second militaristic symbol is called the wings of freedom and is pretty simple. To fight for one's freedom and to not be suppressed by anyone or anything, governing body, religion, a person or thing...nothing.
They are both from manga. While the manga themselves inspired them, they're not necessarily 'because of the manga'. I do love each respective's manga, but it's more the idea behind them that I fell in love with. But yes...I AM NERD INCARNATE. ACCEPT ME OR NOT!!
I hope you guys weren't eating while reading this. :-*
-
Nice! I want to get branded for real. I hear it's a lot of work, but it looks badass.

Uber bump....
Got ink no. 3 today, and am beyond pleased with it...

It's a bit shiny cause of the ointment and shit, I'll post another pic in a few days. Totally in love with it though.
-
That is pretty sweet! I've always been a fan of that style of tat....the 3D peering through flesh type. It looks like a Galaxy swirling around in space....very neat!
-
Gorgeous. What was the inspiration for it? Also, I assume left inner thigh/knee is the location?
I'll get my 3rd sometime in the next couple of years, and when I do, it'll be an original piece by jingle.son (the art, not the actual tattoo'g)
-
Thanks guys, very pleased with it. The inspiration is the whole "we're made of star stuff" thing, and it's actually on the upperleft arm.
-
That looks very cool!
About six months ago, I made a new one myself. It's a bit hard to take a photo of though, so here's a part of it:
It's the piano DNA string that's the new one. It starts on the shoulder and goes all the way down to the arm and stops just where the above the hand. :)
-
Thanks guys, very pleased with it. The inspiration is the whole "we're made of star stuff" thing, and it's actually on the upperleft arm.
Ahhh... I see it now. I thought maybe the centre of the 'system' was your knee cap - optical illusion as it looked like there was a slight bend going on there.
-

Tattoo #4 incoming in a couple of days!
-
Majesty symbol with "vacant" written underneath on my left hip, Pink Floyd symbol on my right hip. Oh, and a caterpillar ;)

Still trying to come up with something for year 5...

Ugh, no tattoo tonight. Instead, having a veterinary emergency, the cat decided to eat some coins

I don't think I ever posted a pic of my latest inc?

The new part is the piano DNA string kind of thing - it wraps around my entire arm so it's hard to take a decent picture of.

awesome idea, love it Lynxo!

Thanks! The guy was super efficient, probably about 35 minutes in the chair. It helped that it was a single color, and all line work with no shading, but I'd been expecting about an hour.
On the waiver form, you had to initial by a statement that they aren't responsible if your tattoo is misspelled, or if the symbol you get turns out to have a different meaning than you think it does....it's the "don't blame us for you being a dumbass" clause. :rollin
-
That's the best part about tattoos in abstract/fictional languages, no one can tell if they're wrong anyways. Just like my two in elvish, people just have to trust me that they are what I say they are.

Sitting down for my first Tat in 21 years in about an hour. Pretty simple tat to commemorate 10 years sober. Will be a Roman numeral 10 with this year (2108) I Roman numerals incorporated as well. Excited and nervous all at once. It’s been a while.....

Ha! No kidding. I have (5) tattoos yet it’s been so long since my last one this feels like the first one I’m getting.

I've been pushing jingle.son to mock up an image of Thor's hammer Mjolnir so I can get jingle.son artwork on my body somewhere. Even offered to pay him for it (the drawing, not the tattoo'g!!). Do you think I can motivate an unemployed 17-year old to do this!?!?! Really want it done before he goes off to college in the fall.
-
I could draw one in MS Paint for you, jingle! I've got level 9000 skills.

Just get a tattoo on your thigh Chad Stating "RJ was here".

"No Regrats".

I love the sentiment and the 3D pops right off your leg.

Looks great man, and congrats on your sobriety!
-
:tup Thanks fellas. I like what he did with it as well. I like that it has that ‘aged’ and beaten up look. It was a ‘simple’ tat that he did a good job of artistry with.
-
I have no idea why I've never got a tattoo. My family is really into them. Mrs P. and three of my five kids have all kinds of tattoos. Mrs. P's is continuous from her bicep running over her shoulder, down her ribs, across her hip and halfway down her thigh. It's so cool and gorgeous but she'd kill me if I shared a picture here.
My eldest son has a sleeve tattoo on his left arm of Spider-man battling Venom in the air above New York skyscrapers. My youngest daughter has them over both arms and down her left leg. Here's a shot of her in her wedding dress a couple of years ago.
I think it's beautiful, and cool as hell. I wonder why nothing has ever really grabbed me enough to want to get one for myself?
-
Looking good Gary. Good to see that the tat artist wasn't as ... ambitious ... as you when it comes to shaving body hair.

I have to be honest, I am not a tat guy at all, but that's bad ass. That's the kind of work that could get me in the chair.
-
Nice one Gary, I got my sobriety date tattooed on me as well, serves as a great permanent reminder.

I'm not in anyway a tattoo guy, but I like the sobriety reminder. I think that's cool.
-

Thanks. I figured no matter what happens in life from this point forward.......no one can take away the past 10 years of sobriety from me and what it's meant to me, my loved ones and close friends.
-
For me, no one can take away Led Zeppelin, Rush or Dream Theater. :lol
-
That's a great tattoo gmiller, I love the detail work.
I'd love to get another tattoo but I don't know what or where.

I didn't even know there was a thread for tattoos. I really need to pay more attention.
I have a 3/4 sleeve on my right arm, half sleeve in progress on my left (should be finished Friday), and a large piece on my calf (which i might turn into a 1/2 leg sleeve.
If anyone can recommend a free photo site I'd gladly gladly upload some pics. I used to use photobucket before they shit the bed

I just message the pic to myself on FB and use that link.
On topic, geared up for ink #5, looking to get a stylized IQ logo from the Subterrenea album done on the inside of my forearm. Figure I'll get it done within a month...

I used to do that, and it works fine short term. The problem is that Facebook shuffles up the addresses once in a while (presumably to discourage people from doing that, using FB as an easy image-hosting site) so after a while all the links are broken.
I was revisiting some of my discographies a while back, and noticed that most of the links were broken. They were all Facebook links. That's when I went through and redid them all, uploading all the images to Imgur and linking them from there.
Just sharing knowledge. Again, it works fine for something like posting in the picture thread, which presumably people aren't going to be digging through months from now. But FB unfortunately won't work as a true image hosting site.
-
I just message the pic to myself on FB and use that link.
omg this is genius and how have I never thought of it! I usually just post it and use that link, but messaging means it doesn't have to be out there. Doing this from now on if its something I don't want to actually post!
I'm also okay with it disappearing at some point. Not everything needs to last forever on the internet lol
-
Seeing this thread has started the make me get the itch to get another tattoo. Still in the early stages but I'm starting to think of what I want and where.

I don't picture him like that at all in the books either, but i was going for the same theme from the cover art. This version is more badass than the one i picture when reading. In my mind Blaine= a talking, riddling version of the monorail from the Simpsons

Dude. Awesome. Awesome to the max.

So, I've been wanting to cover up some old tat's for quite some time. Most of my tattoos I got when I was 18...I'm now 43 so they've aged quite a bit and just aren't "fresh" any longer.
My first tattoo was a tribal Grim Reaper on my upper left shoulder. I recall having a huge fascination with the Grim Reaper when I was 18....enough of one to where when I left to go get my first tattoo my Father said "Just don't get the Grim Reaper" So obviously I got the grim reaper. I've never 'regretted' any of the tattoos I got....only that I wish I had allowed the artists themselves to design them rather than them just using what I had drawn up. I thought it'd be neat to have my 'own' work on me....taking up some prime real estate. Shortly after the grim reaper I added a bible verse below it out of the Revelations. "I am he that liveth and was dead and behold I am alive forever more, and have the keys of hell and of death" Still like the verse but after 25 years the script I had drawn was near unreadable.
So...i consulted the same artist who gave me my '10 year sober' commemorative tattoo....and we came up with a cover up idea. Being that my left arm is the arm that was ravaged by a rattlesnake bite when I was 24....we decided that a skin rip that reveals rattlesnake scales under my skin would do the trick.
Here's the results.....keep in mind these pics are 'fresh' after the tat so there is some redness.

Already planning the other shoulder piece we've discussed. But it's gonna take some more disposable $$$ that I don't have right now so it'll be a bit before I get to it.

Not a real tat guy, and not that my opinion means anything in this context, but while the art is good (actually, VERY good), the real core of that is the story. I mean, how many people can say they've survived a rattlesnake bite, and to have that tat, that's pretty flipping cool, if you ask me.

yeah Bill....it's definitely a somewhat unique story to tell, that's for sure. Seems like a different lifetime ago that it happened....almost like it wasn't even my life. I was in SUCH a completely different 'place' in life in every aspect of it. So weird to look back on it now....
Amazing story, amazing concept and an amazing Tat.

I was talking with a friend of mine not too long ago, and she's going through a divorce, and perhaps not navigating as well as she could (by her own admission), and we agreed that our best decisions rarely make for the best stories. :).

met with my 'go to' tattooist and we worked out a concept for my St. Louis Blues commemorative Stanley Cup Championship tat!! :metal I've seen quite a few of these on social media the last week so we tried to come up with something a bit more unique....i like what he was going for as it will incorporate all the important aspects but should stand out as it's 'own' tattoo and not part of the pack. Bummer is he's booked solid so I have to wait until July 23rd :'(

Oh that's right I didn't share my in progress photos in here. I kinda want to share it in here, kinda want to wait til the final session is over next month. Decisions, decisions....

That's a tough call. On one hand you want to show us all because you're jazzed about it but on the other hand you want us to see it in all it's glory after it's done. Either way it's good
-
Ah what the hell. This is 7 hours in; two sessions so far, 5 1/2 hours and 1 1/2 hours. Last session is July 14th, probably for another 3 or 4 hours. He's going to darken in some shading, build out the lower mouth and interior, add some intense detail to the gems up top, touch up the bottom near my wrist, and add some atmospheric blending around the outside.
He's so amped about it that he told me he wants to submit it to the best medium color judging at next year's tattoo convention.

Next Tuesday I get my St. Louis Blues Stanley Cup Champion Tat. Can’t wait. Any significance to the colors of the four gems? Or is it just artist choice?

Any significance to the colors of the four gems? Or is it just artist choice?
The gems represent each person in my family: green is my son, purple is my daughter, aquamarine is my wife, and dark blue is me. The dragon is the protector, warden of the hoard, keeping watch over us. My son also had the brilliant idea that the dragon could signify our dog who is always watching out for us. I came up with the concept and gave source reference material and my artist completely kicked ass on the piece and tattooing. He killed it. Truly a collaborative effort all around and the best tattoo experience of my life so far.
I've recently been through a hell of a lot of "life" so to speak, and this felt like a good way to enshrine the most important things, and thoughts, on me.
I've named the dragon Kódmándír (we often call our dog, Cody, "Code-mander" as a silly nickname), Warden of the Hoard.

I had a hunch since they were prominent that they represented something. I thought family right off the bat. I have a similar idea for a tat....using the birthstones of my kiddos, wife and myself in an ornate cross.

Was FINALLY able to get in and get my 'Champ Stamp' done!!!! I'm pretty happy with the results :metal We've scheduled a follow up in (2) weeks to take a peek after it's healed a bit and make sure the Blue coloring is really packed in and make sure he's happy with how it turned out. But...all in all....I hope I have the issue of finding future spots for multiple years they win the Cup  Now that they got that one out of the way lets hoard them

Awesome!!!

Nice work. The tattoo, not the Blues winning the cup.

Nice piece.
My forearm is all healed so I'm probably heading back in this weekend sometime to show him the healed piece. Incredibly pleased with it, still.
-
Awesome stuff Gary. :tup
Hopefully I'll be posting tat #3 in the coming months. I've wanted for a long time to have some of jingle.son's art tattoo'd on me, and we've settled on the piece/design. Now I just need him to polish it up a little. I've found the artist I want to do, and am hoping to get on it early in August.
-
Gary, that looks awesome.
-
Thanks gentlemen. I appreciate it. In that pic it's still a bit red as that was an immediate pic after it was done....but I wanted to get this posted because I'm pretty pumped about it.
Chad....can't wait to see what jingle.son artwork you're getting inked. He's a talented young man.
-
Gary, here's my thing with the Cup tattoo..it's on your back!
If I got a tattoo like that, I would want to look at it. What good is it back there? There's really no way to admire it.

I didn’t really have many spots left. Both arms are taken and I have plans for my right calf. Other calf is taken, right chest is taken and I have plans for the left chest.

I'm guessing Gary doesn't want a sleeve because of work and both upper arms are covered so your looking in the mirror on your chest so the back is the same. Covered but you'll look at it in the mirror.
Ninja'd. Lol. I was close. Lol

Exactly what I'm thinking with my next tat. Both my shoulders are taken, and mrs.jingle isn't a fan of calf tattoo's. So, looks like it might be inner forearm, or maybe my chest/pec. Given what the tattoo is, inner forearm is what I'm leaning towards at the moment.
-
I'm not a tattoo guy, but if I got one like a Gary's, I'd have to look at it. I mean, why get it in the first place if you can't see it?
-
Your key point is you have none so that's why you'd want to stare at it all the time. That's a guesstimate btw.

I get it. I’d have liked to have gotten it on my upper arm but there’s no space. Was just limited on options. I’ll keep a ‘liked’ pic in my camera roll for the days I Want to stare at it. But for you....I can PM you a more sexy topless pic if you’d like. :zydar:

Thanks! She did an amazing job! I've gotten so many hilarious compliments on it while out and about this summer.
The pics are just now loading for me finally- yours looks awesome! And Andrew yours looks intense.

:lol thanks.. I still can't believe I got such a humongous Nic Cage tatt. My artist is moving to Maine soon so I'm trying to think of another good idea for her before she leaves! I'm sad, she's such a badass.

Some (most?) know that jingle.son is an artist, and about a year and a half ago, I decided I wanted some of his art inked on me. Now, I'd wanted it before he went off to school - LAST YEAR! - but he never got around to it last summer... which kinda pissed me off because it was really important to me. Anywhoo... he did finally design something for my birthday, but then school took priority, and it didn't get finalized until earlier this month. Finally got it inked yesterday, and I'm very happy with it. It is supposed to look like it's in four separate pieces... almost like it's coming apart (or together, depending on your perspective). That was his creative vision.
His design, and the final product. Combining my love of comics (Thor was always my favorite growing up) and music (Zeppelin 4 symbols was my first tattoo). The notes 'carved' into the hammer are the opening riff to Immigrant Song. Despite his design including the time and key signature, the tattooist said it would be too small to get on there properly, so we had to pull it out. It runs on the inside of my left forearm ... just below the elbow crease, and above my wrist.

Wow, that's awesome!

Like I told you Chad, great design....and your artist nailed the application. She did an awesome job!
-
Awesome tattoo Chad!
-
That's pretty neat! I like that the tattoo artist added cracks on the hammer. It sucks that he couldn't add the Time and key signature. Still looks pretty awesome.
-
I hear you on the detail, Chad. The last time I thought seriously about getting one was when I was still in the military. A lot of friends had gotten them in Okinawa in '89, but I hadn't come up with anything I really wanted. Shortly after we got back, I drew up something I was actually interested in. I don't have it anymore, but it was a variation of the crest on the first House of Lords album, with some more custom details to personalize it and make it relevant to me.
Pic of that album cover for reference:
I was going to have it be a shoulder/upper arm tat. I took it to an artist, and his eyes bugged out. He told me he could definitely do it. But with the level of detail I had, he said it needed to be a LOT bigger, as in a full back tat, or else it needed to be WAY simplified, which would be a shame because the level of detail was pretty beautiful. So I ended up just scrapping the idea.
Oh, and yours is very cool, Chad! :tup
-
I'm not a tat guy, myself, and so have none (not because I'm against them, but because I really can't figure out something that I care about that much to get on my body. Closest so far, some reference to Uconn or the Eye of Horus. Having said that, in recent years - given the passing of some of the older members of my family - a sort of modern version of the old school, what I call "Navy" tattoo. My grandfather had several tattoos, but they were all of the sort of thick green line variety, and my uncle, who just passed at 86, had several actual Navy tattoos, including an anchor on his forearm. (One of them, I forget which one, had a 50's pinup model - think "Betty Boop" - on his forearm as well. I don't really have a style, per se; I don't look like those hipster rockabilly guys, but I kind of like that idea of a tattoo.
We'll see. Likely all talk, plus like anything else, there are certain bells you can't unring. Once I get one I can't ever say "I don't have any".
-
I really can't figure out something that I care about that much to get on my body.
Yeah, that pretty much describes where I have always been on the issue as well. That crest/coat-of-arms that I designed worked because it was something that looked really cool, was personal, and wasn't something "trendy" or "in-the-moment" that I could foresee still identifying with at 80 years old. Looking back now, I wouldn't have minded a basic military tat ether. But it wasn't something I was interested in at the time, and the idea of going back and doing it now seems kinda silly.
-
The one piece of advice I was given before getting a tattoo is MAKE SURE it's something meaningful, 'cuz it's a lifetime commitment (to your point Bill, you can't un-ring that bell). So good on anyone who doesn't just flippantly tattoo themselves with something.
Mine is all healed now, so I think I might take another picture, now that it's .... settled.
-

The 1 tattoo I have took me 8 years to design. I started out with something very detailed and complicated and ended up with something a lot more simple and straight forward, but it's something that has meaning to me. I know a lot of people get tattoos just to get one.

And for some hardcore people that simply want their body to be a canvass, that's cool. But for the rest of the 95% of the population, I think it's important to make sure it's something with a lot of meaning.
-
I have 2 tattoos. The first one is a tribute to my dad on my shoulder (Quote from Octavarium and dates, written in Octavarium font), which I got with only a few days of planning. Second I got a few years later, a Majesty symbol on my calf, which I wanted for years.
It's funny how the tat that had very little planning and thought to it means more than the tat that I sat and dreamed about for years.

Yep! I always forget I even have mine until someone sees it and mentions it, which only happens if my shirt lifts or my hair is up.

I have two left I want to get. One is the Majesty Symbol. Dream Theater's music has been a part of my life since I was 16....it's interwoven into 'who' I am in some way which I think I share with a ton of people across the globe. So, I definitely want to get that symbol.
The other is I'm going to get a family crest of sorts. I really don't have one but have spoken with my tattoo artist about it and he's going to design it. The only thing I know for sure it'll have is our birthstone colors or even the gemstones themselves....all designed around or in the letter 'M'. I trust this dude to come up with something original and awesome. It's going to be a bit though before I'll have the disposable cash to spend on another tat. Got my cover up tat this year which I planned for.....wasn't planning on the Blues winning the cup though :lol So that was an unexpected expense.
-
I've been tempted, mostly when seeing some beautiful art on other people, but the temptation was never lasting. The minimalist in me always wins. If I were to get a tattoo, it'd be a mechanical gear, or several grouped together.

James LaBrie got inked.

I'd say 600...the guy that does my work is about 100/hr, and that looks to be at least 6 hours of work. Nice piece.

Yeah. Easily $600. Maybe more. Depending on rate and how detailed.....how many sessions. You gotta pay the price for good tats.
-
Got another tat yesterday. Had my families birthstones incorporated into a cross...on a weathered and damaged shield. My guy likes to do a touch up session after a couple weeks so I'll go back in on 11/7 for him to touch up anything that doesn't heal well.

Nice work! I'll be back in the chair this spring, myself. I have my kids on one side of my back in Dragon Ball Z style, and I'm going to add my wife and i on the other side. Any significance to the branches framing the shield?
-
No significance. I just asked him to fill the space with something cool looking. I like the muted filigree he went with.
Only real significant stuff are the birthstones....and obviously the cross/thorns olive leaves with us being a family of faith. I had him crack the shield to signify that faith and family aren’t always ‘easy’ but that both when strong are unbreakable.
-
Looks great, Gary.
I'm not itching to go back for another just yet (though ideas are swirling)...but it just got a lot easier, as a new shop opened up literally a two minute walk from our house :lol

Don't have any tattoos yet, but I was thinking about getting this on my back up near my right shoulder/neck area

Go one eye so it can be bigger. The details pop more when the imagery of generously spaced, IMO. And that's speaking from experience with my own work, where i find my sleeve is a bit clunky in places compared to my back/shoulder piece which is better spaced
-
Thanks, I was feeling the same way.
The first image called to me, but then almost instinctually I cut it in half and think that's the right way to go.
-
I vote for one eye as well. Your post reminded me of the work one of my favorite artists does who does like of eye theme tattoos. https://instagram.com/niki23gtr?igshid=v5gu3vse972r
If I could book time with him I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Do you know what his name was Reaper? I don't have an instagram account so its not letting me access it.

This is his site but it seems like it hasn't been updated in a long time, he has a ton of photos on Instagram though if you do get an account or I can just grab some screen grabs and post them here.

Holy shit dude, that guys work is awesome
Yep. That’s some incredible work. I imagine his tats are several sessions given the level of detail they have. I’d be curious as to what his fee is. I’m sure it’s a pretty penny. But completely worth it.
I’m getting the itch to get back in. I have an OLD tat on my right arm that I got very impulsively. At the time (I was 18) I drew it up and raced off to get it. It’s not that I ‘regret’ getting it....I regret not letting a professional artist take my idea and come up with something. Anyway, I told the guy who’s done my recent ones I’d like to either covering up or incorporate it into a larger piece.

It'd be cool if you could incorporate it unless you really don't like it. I also have had the itch on getting another tattoo but it'll be a while before I settle on something I really like.

Sweet. Though, I never 'got' the appeal of putting something on your (royal) back - you hardly ever see it yourself!
-
I think it's more about presenting the art than just looking at it yourself. Sure, I like to look at my tattoos; but it's also about having nice art work on my body for other people to enjoy when they have an opportunity to see it. I completely understand your position though. On most days though, only the forearm section of my one sleeve is actually visible. At this point I have thousands of dollars in tattoos that aren't visible to anyone outside my household lol.

That's really awesome, took me a little bit to realize it said papa san on the right

I only have 1 tattoo, and it's on my back  Though I am planning to get my second one soon, which would be on my right arm.

He pulled the palette over from the edges of my tattoo on the inside of my forearm so it blended as a mural.

Just had a consult with my tattoo guy....got an appointment set for 9/24 and 10/16. Looking at my right arm....kind of half sleeve deal but I have an old tat there that he's going to incorporate/cover. Just told him I was open to the design....looking at a geometric style mash up with his flare.....asked if he could work the DT logo in there as well. He's a good artist so I'm looking forward to what he comes up with.

Had the background finished on my latest work. At some point I'll fill in the space between the two sides on my back, but for now I'm quite pleased. Next work is going to be finishing the sleeve on my left arm (it's a Dark Tower themed half sleeve right now).

My artist almost never sends me the design being initial sketching, so i can understand the butterflies. Look forward to seeing it!

OK so.....here is the 27 year old tat that I was going to get covered up. I drew this when I was 18 and thought it'd be 'awesome' to get a tat of something I drew. Anyway.....as you can see it's every bit a 27 year old tattoo that an 18 year old drew
(https://i.imgur.com/KjlQMSU.jpg)
My artist was sure he could revamp it and so I said lets go for it and this was after about an hour of sitting....
Then, the grand plan is to have a background of geometric style shapes....etc etc. so he started in with a mandala. I still have another session to go as there is a plan to radiate out with different patterns....will go another 3-4 inches lower....off to the sides and up top.
Next and probably final session is 10/16....but, I'm stoked as I'm digging it big time. I was floored with how well he did with revitalizing the old one.

Dang that's pretty dope how it looks now.

Nice work! Are there plans to incorporate it into a half sleeve?

Yep. That's what we will be doing next session. Going to utlize the 3-4ish inches below the mandala and refreshed tat.....above....and on the sides. Will just be more geometrical patterns
-
yeah, looks cool... the snake/scale effects on the left with the cracked/smooth/stone on the right is pretty cool. At least, that's how it looks to me.
-
Second Session.....one more to go.
I did fanboy out and get the DT Majesty Logo. I've always liked it and I figured 30 years listening to a band gives you the right to show the love.

Like I said, one more session to go. He wants to get some more detail in the filigree....we're going to add a bit more of it to fill some of the open areas and then just overall background work and what not.
-
Nice! I also have a majesty symbol, and Avenged Sevenfold's deathbat. JP and Synyster Gates are my guitar inspirations, so i don't see a problem with paying homage to that. Trying to emulate JP has made me the player i am today.
-
Looks nice!
-
Looking good Gary!
-
Awesome sauce. I’ve got the Majesty tat as well, with Rush’s Starman on top of it - Setlist Scotty’s avatar. Going on 10 years ago (since it was a 40th birthday gift to myself).
-
Wonder how many people here have the majesty symbol tattooed on them?
I have it as well, but I have it on the Majesty guitar headstock. No JP signature though :P
-
That looks amazing. The details get better with each session.
-
Final session to throw in a kind of border at the half sleeve spot.....I really like the stonework and cracks and what not he's done before in other tats of mine so I had him incorporate it here as well. Still a bit red in the pics as this was right afterwards. I'll throw some healed pics in here in a couple weeks.

That's really sweet, man!
-
So I lied.....once the last session healed I didn't like how we'd kind of just ended the tat without wrapping around the backside. It was empty and didn't look right. So I went back and filled in behind the bicep to complete the whole 'wrap' I've always dug that little emblem/logo on Neal Morse's 'The Great Adventure' cover so I used that as a starting point and just asked him to fill in the spot with some filigree and stonework style stuff in the same vein as the rest of the tat.

So this is kind of a 'front' view of the arm:

A 'back' view:

So I believe I'm done for a bit. Looking at maybe reworking another old tat I have on my chest in the same way he just did this old tat. But like I said, I'm going to chill a couple months I believe.
-
So I am thinking about getting a first tattoo and I wanted get some thoughts about location
It will be 3 words, the Polish phrase: żyć dla nich
It will probably be small, but big enough to read. I want it to be in a place where I can see it everyday and be reminded of it, but not obvious in day to day life to other people. So Like a t shirt and shorts will cover it, but i can see it when taking a shower or whatever.
Sorry if that's complicated. I'm new to the tattoo game.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
-
Inside of your bicep would probably be the best fit for what you're looking for. It's even slightly concealed with your shirt off and arms at your sides. Chest is another option, but I've always preferred saving large real estate like the chest for bigger tattoos.
-
What does the phrase mean?
I agree with inside the bicep... High on the shoulder works too, that's where I put my first one.
-
It's funny, you guys basically read my mind. Inside my my right bicep was the very first thing that came to mind when I was thinking about potential places, so that may be the spot.
żyć dla nich is Polish for "live for them"
My entire life all I wanted was to be is a father, but I'm at age 35 now and have failed so far at this goal, so I went into a deep depression feeling like I had nothing to live for, and that is a terrifying place to be. It was under a heavy weed edible dose that that phrase came to me and rescued me from those horrible feelings.
The insight that came was: Just because you don't have children today, doesn't mean you won't have them someday. You die today, and they die with you even though they aren't alive yet. I had never thought about it like that and it was just what I needed and one of the defining moments of my life.
That was 4 months ago and that phrase is what inspires me to keep going. It means everything to me and I just want to keep it close and be a constant reminder not to give up.
-
Looks like I haven't shared this here yet! Its a mash of Zelda and Red Rising references. Its going up to the bra line with a space battle and Coheed Keywork symbol. This is healed up after 4 sessions (1 line, 3 color). Getting more done today!

That is awesome! Very detailed and I dig all the color choices there!
-
Yes, very nice!
-
Very cool

Love the details, looks great :tup
My partner is getting the Keywork as well next month.

Here's what I would like to do as my first tattoo. Hopefully in the next two weeks
(https://i.pinimg.com/564x/3d/bc/05/3dbc058d6f2c1a216ee6d03dd52e209b.jpg)
On the arm it looks dull, but I would like it more like the picture, so more like a shiny gold flake kind of deal
-
I'm so jealous of people who have that type of skin that ink just pops off of. It looks amazing Tricia

I like it, especially the gold. Is that going to be the size of the tattoo?
I'm still working on ideas for starting my half-sleeve, hopefully in the next year or so.
-
Thanks Reaper.
Yeah, basically the cut out that I have on my wrist is the size I'm going for. I would like it to be subtle, but at all times be visible to me.
It's there's as a reminder to never feel ashamed of who I am anymore. It's like it was right there in front of my face my entire life, but I just couldn't see it. Well, soon I'll a reminder in ink.
-
Thanks everyone! I'm really excited to see the upper half next month.
Phoenix - whats the significance of the symbol if you don't mind me asking?
-
Sure, no problem chknptpie.
The gold infinity sign is the symbol for autism, which I was diagnosed with last week at age 35.
Spent my entire life feeling like a weirdo and an outsider. Struggling so hard to fit in. Feeling like there was something wrong with me and not understanding why. Looking back now, all the signs were there. Right in front of my face, but I just didn't realize it.
Now I'm finally able to let go of that guilt and finally learn to love who I am, despite being different. And I can't wait to get that tattoo to honor that.
-
Awesome!
-
Super awesome!
-
I keep looking at that tat Tricia....the detail is really well done. I LOVE that shield! Can't wait to see the campfire and tree line completed!!
Phoenix.....love the idea and the tat itself. I'm sure you've done this....but....make sure to find a really good artist to do that one. It may be small and what some would consider to be 'simple' but due to it's meaning and the symmetry and 'flow' of it you want them to nail it! Looking forward to seeing it!
So....I will reach 15 years of sobriety in June and had planned to get a tattoo to commemorate the occasion. I did so with my ten year mark so I had an appointment to go in and get one set with my guy in August. He books pretty far out and is always full....but....he called me last week (actually on the day of Tricia's first post) and said he had a client push an appointment and wanted to know if I'd like to take it. Even though it's about a month and a half before my 'official' sobriety date....I said sure. So I went in last Saturday and sat for it. All I told him is I wanted the Roman Numerals for '15' (XV).....and that to give it a similar look to what he'd done on my bicep on my other arm. So, here it is (6) days healed.
And this is on my other arm that he did a year or so ago. So, they're kind of related yet different.

Thanks for the guidance. I think I found someone who is up to the task and I scheduled some time with her next Friday the 5th. Going to get the small infinity sign on the wrist and she said she can do the polish phrase on the inner arm during that session too.

Love it Gary.

Thanks Gary! Love your new work and congrats :)

Good call, Chad!
Also, Gary, I (for one) would appreciate a bit of grooming (if not shaving) of your pits prior to the next photo. Eeeeeeew.

Congrats on the milestone Gary. Looking forward to seeing the 20 year tattoo.

Cheers on XV bro!!

You and me both! Thanks Tim!

Yeah...yeah....laundry smaundry. That's nowhere near the largest pile of clothes that needs to be put away that has formed in that spot

Won't that itch?

So as i'm about to get these first tattoos, does anyone have some guidance on how to take care of them as they heal, do's and don'ts and healing time?

I use and have had great luck with Aquafor….the skin ointment. Just a light layer every couple hours. Cover it well and Work it in. Depending on where your other tat is I’d wear a shirt to kind of keep the ointment at bay, especially sleeping. And After a day or so the tat will ‘flake’ a bit but it rubs out easy with the ointment…..then there will be a few days where it may itch. I’m 11 days out from my tat and Im pretty much healed up. A itch here and there and I use Aquafor maybe two times today….but I think I’m pretty much done with it now.
Not sure what others do but that’s been my strategy and all mine have healed really well.
-
Good info
Thanks so much
-
If your artist uses second skin or any other type of brand like that - do it! If you can keep it intact, it saves from 3-4 days of washing and goo-ing and then you go straight to just peeling.

This all day long. Second skin is fantastic for healing

This is what my wife and daughters use for tattoo recovery. I've had to apply it several times...pretty cool stuff.
-
I never went with anything other than Aquafor. It’s worked like a charm for me…..probably a fraction of the cost, but I don’t know the cost of that stuff.
The point being that definitively take the time to be vigilant about the aftercare. It’s very important.
-
I don't know that it really matters what brand/product. Just use some form of mosteurizer (not petroleum based) don't let it dry out. I used Tattoo Goo for my last big tat, and simply used my usual tattoo balm on my latest tat. Even though it's just a tiny one, it didn't scab up whatsoever.

All done, here goes my first tats ever

Thanks.
I know right, lol. Me and my artist were already talking about the next one :lol
But all in good time. No need to rush. Today was a good introduction

Truth rings forth from these words haha. If we weren't doing a massive reno on our house right now, I'd be in the chair having my back finished.

Looks good :tup :tup
-
^^ thanks so much
Well, I'm on day 2 and they look pretty much perfect :tup
No itching, no pus, no scabs, no flaking at all. And they look awesome as well. That all may come, but so far so good
And because of their positioning, I was able to be out enjoying the lovely weather, and not really worry about the sun.
I'm very happy

Happy birthday Gary, and sweet tattoos! How many do you have now?
I’ve had 11 different sessions…..couple of them are now just blending into ‘one’ design/look. I’m heading back in a month to do a similar design on the other arm in the same spot.
After that I have an old tat in my right chest I want to get reworked
-
That's awesome, what do you mean reworked? Are you getting it touched up or changing it?
-
That's awesome, what do you mean reworked? Are you getting it touched up or changing it?
It’s an almost 40 year old tattoo….so my artist did something with an older tat I had before that I liked so it’ll be kind of retouched and worked/incorporated into a new design.

You got a tattoo when you were 9!?!?!

Looks like the 1st Son's of Apollo album cover.

Some of it was inspired by an album cover…..just not that one.

OK....I'm done for a bit now but just got the other arm done last night to kind of 'even out' each side. The pattern in this one is from my wedding ring....the colors are my wife and I's birthstones.

I've been thinking about doing something similar using the design from my wedding band. I wear my dad's wedding ring, and it has a really interesting pattern that almost looks like flames.
-
Wow that looks nice. Love the Majesty symbol and the wedding ring design is a nice meaningful touch.
The only way I’d ever consider a tattoo would be as some sort of tribute to a loved one.

I meant something more in line with a tragedy of some sort.
I’ll be very lucky to ever see grandkids.

I just really need an excuse to get a tattoo and am always on the lookout for a good reason....it 'sells' the idea to my wife better. She's not a big tattoo person. But I get what you're saying now with the tribute.....
-
Going to visit my artist on Saturday to discuss my next one and my wife's first. Hers will be relatively small while mine will probably be another multiple session one. We'll see though.
