Comparing KM and DS departures with MP's
« on: September 18, 2011, 03:39:44 PM »
Someone from another forum made a comment that DT's sound has changed with changing keyboardists more than it did when Portnoy left.

I tend to agree. Apparently KM has made the most contributions out of the other keyboardists as a major lyricist and music writer of the band so his departure made a major impact. DS's work on FII definitely has it's own unique sound and now even MP admits that JR is an integral part the music writing.

And now that we have ADTOE, we do see some of MP's preferred heavy elements missing but, imo, the change is not as big as the change made by changing keyboardists.

What do you all think?

As far as the music is concerned, yes. If we consider the whole DT organization and life, than no.

Awake -> FII and FII -> SFAM were much bigger changes than BCASL -> ADTOE.

There was more to it than just the change of keyboardist, but it was definitely a huge part of it. As all of the main songwriters are still around, ADTOE wasn't a huge change to me, more of a balancing of existing elements of their songwriting.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.
