Iron Maiden kept the momentum going with Dance of Death, following the immense success of Brave New World. The new album was very much in the same vein as the previous effort stylistically, though perhaps it went a little farther down the progressive path, particularly on songs like the expansive, stop-and-go Paschendale and acoustic-infused title song. Dance of Death also features Nicko McBrain's sole songwriting credit with Iron Maiden, on New Frontier.

For the first time, there's really not much of note to say about this album. There were no major lineup changes, and the album was very much a stylistic continuation of the previous effort. Not that this is a bad thing—Dance of Death is a good album that was pretty well-received, though not as well as Brave New World.

The one big flaw that this album has is the album art. It's an early experiment in CGI that failed pretty massively. The guy who designed it sent this image as a prototype, and the band decided they wanted to go ahead and use it as the artwork, which the designer was not happy about at all, since he thought it looked terrible! It pretty much does.

____________

I like this album, but it's definitely the least of the reunion ones for me. It just has a few songs that don't really work that well, like Wildest Dreams, New Frontier and Age of Innocence. That said, it also has some really good ones, like Paschendale, Montsegur and Rainmaker. My first vote has to got (sorry Nicko!) to...

Yeah, New Frontier as well.

I love this album, the very highs compensate by very far the little lows the album has. I'd dare to call it one of my very favorites from them.

I know I'll have many heartbreaks during this survivor, but my top 4 are generally liked so I hope they all pull through  ;D
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

My Top 4 are Rainmaker, Dance of Death, Paschendale and Journeyman. I have no idea what the consensus on this album is, so we'll see.

New Frontier is fine by me.

Well, I think we'll get along just fine you and I  :D

I expect on a prog forum that Face in the Sand may go far, and I also expect Wildest Dreams to crash and burn pretty quickly. But I must say that I know I like Dance of Death far better than the average, so I guess I'll find out in this survivor how much my tastes matches those of the others.

It's a toss aiming down really, New Frontier is slightly catchier but has the worse lyrics, so each song rivals the other in being the least good. I was undecided myself between these two.

I have a soft spot for Gates of Tomorrow. If pressed, would I say it's among their 30 or so worst songs? Yeah, probably. But, for whatever reason, I quite like it.

It's 101% Steve Harris' kind of song, with all the "checks" of slow intro, fast enter, repetive chorus etc that he used a lot lately, I can see people not liking it but I'm surprised that Wildest Dreams, Gates of Tomorrow and New Frontier do not get all the votes first.

The first thing I'd vote for on this album if that were an option is the fucking album cover. What an abomination.

Haha, true, but with time I've come to accept it in its weird way. It still sucks, but I'm over it by now.

It's a pity because, given the concept, the idea "Eddie as a grim reaper in a surreal dance of death" had so much potential.

It may be the worst album cover I've ever seen on an album I actually like. Certainly the worst one where I'm not thinking "well, this was a dumb concept for a cover, anyway." Basically it gets like a B for concept, an F for execution.

Yeah, that's vastly superior.

The thing is, too, the pictures inside the CD booklet are well-executed and in keeping with the concept of the cover art. The CGI was just totally botched.

I've never consider the cover to be bad or terrible.. I guess that's because I don't pay much attention to graphics when is about music and not about painting.. ;D

Although I must admit I've always thought that those failures in the CGI were somehow on purpose.. Like being around the Grim Reaper would deform you..

Actually it was a first draft to let the band have an idea of what was going on.

The band liked it and went "No, ok, this is it, this is already the cover, we like it that way!" and the author refused to be credited 'cause to him it was still an unfinished job.
