DT's "clean" lyrics; have they ever been asked about it?
« on: June 06, 2015, 11:39:43 PM »
Despite being in the metal genre, DT has virtually no Sex, Drugs & Rock 'n Roll lyrics.
Have they ever commented on this fact? Do they have an internal rule to not sing about that? Or is just none of the lyrics writers interested in doing so?

Given that the band mostly hasn't lived that lifestyle and seems to have little interest in it, I wouldn't be surprised if it's never really come up internally. Their songs have occasionally touched on those topics, but not from the viewpoint we're talking about, so I don't think it's a matter of being off limits. Would those topics even fit with prog metal?

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

WWRD (What would Rush do)

Not that they are copying Rush by any means, but I think it's safe to say that they follow that basic template. For that matter, I think there's plenty of prog bands and artists from other genres that don't have many lyrics about sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll and love in general. It's not common, but I don't think DT, Rush and/or any of these other artists are that unusual for opting to write lyrics about other things.

And yeah, what the others above have posted - their lifestyles likely dictate this to a degree too.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Wouldn't it be funny if JM had been pitching lyrics the entire time, but kept getting shot down because they didn't think his lyrical ideas such as "Snort It Up" and "Bros B4 Hos" were appropriate for their music.

I can't think of too many prog metal bands that write that style of lyric period.

Rush has already been mentioned, but look at all their influences:  Yes, Maiden, Purple, Metallica, Floyd...  none really write about the "Sex, drugs, and rock and roll" lifestyle, and when they do touch on those topics, it is usually in a cautionary tale way and written from the perspective of the individual.  Which is exactly how they show up in DT's work (the 12 Step Suite, for example).

Still running uphill
Swimming against the current
I wish I weren't so fucked
Feels like I'm stuck
Lost in a sea of mediocrity

I remember being surprised by how blunt those lyrics were.  Totally appropriate for the song though but I'm glad they don't make a habit of it.

Another ones that springs to mind...

and I don't need your mercy fuck to get me through the day!

James actually expressed his displeasure with that line so Mike changed it.  To James, which is a pretty Canadian trait, he thought it was kind of undignified in that context so Mike begrudgingly changed it.

Thats about as sex, drugs, and profanity as they get.

Despite being in the metal genre ...

This sounds like every other metal band and the genre as a whole is just about sex, drugs and R&R. And I think that the misconception starts here. Sure there are metal bands with these kind of lyrics, but you have them in almost every other genre as well. And there are a lot of metal bands (not only the proggier ones) that rarely, if at all sing about s,d and r&r. So I never thought that the "clean" lyrics of DT were something special.

Pretty much this. It's mostly the skanky pop hoes and rappers that feature this subject matter, although back in the 70s and 80s they had the so-called "cock rock" fad for awhile.

Well, let's just say there was a reason MP and DT parted ways just before the next set of Ytsejam releases, which was to include The Myung Demos, was released.

I have it on good authority that Lost Not Forgotten was originally titled Fucked & Forgotten and it was about the bands groupie exploits on tour but Chris Collins convinced John Myung to let Petrucci rewrite it about some arabs or something.

Bridges in the Sky was originally called The She-man's Trance, and was about Myung's last visit to Thailand.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Well, Scenes From A Memory is about a woman having sex with two brothers behind their backs which eventually gets her killed and Julian has a drug, alcohol, and gambling addiction.

But apart from that, yeah they really don't have many, if at all, lyrics about most "rock and roll" topics.
