Easy topic: what bands released a debut that still has your favorite song by them.
Note: the band has to have at least five albums (so the sample size isn't too small to pick from).
First ones I could think of:
Boston - Foreplay/Long Time (from Boston)
Spock's Beard - The Light (from The Light)
Arcade Fire - Power Out (from Funeral)
Bad Company - Ready for Love (from Bad Company)
-
I'm not familiar with much arcade fire besides the first album so I'll second that one sure
Wait until Haken releases their next album and I'll post celestial elixir here
-
Interesting question. First ones to come to mind are Liberation by Chicago (Transit Authority) and Winter by Tori Amos. Possibly also Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush, The Dead Flag Blues by Godspeed You Black Emperor, The Toys Go Winding Down by Primus, Sisters of Mercy by Leonard Cohen, Live Forever by Oasis and Bat Out Of Hell by Meat Loaf.
-
Phantom of the Opera is one of my top 2 or 3 Iron Maiden songs, and #1 on any given Sunday. That's the only one that that springs to mind.
-
This isn't that hard for me, really. Given that "Favorite" is a fluid thing, I could respectfully put:
- Garbage "I'm Only Happy When It Rains"
- Judas Priest "Run Of The Mill"
- Kiss "Deuce"
- Guns 'n' Roses "Rocket Queen"
- Ozzy "Revelation Mother Earth" (though it's not my true favorite - that's "Tonight" - it's up there).
- The Cars "Moving In Stereo/All Mixed Up"
- Cheap Trick "Speak Now (Or Forever Hold Your Peace)"
-
- The Cars "Moving In Stereo/All Mixed Up"
Hi Brad, how in the world did I forget Moving in Stereo?!
-
Dada - Dizzneland
Cars - Just What I Needed
Asia - Heat Of The Moment
Our Lady Peace - Starseed
Dishwalla - Counting Blue Cars
Foreigner - Cold As Ice.
-
- Kiss "Deuce"
- Guns 'n' Roses "Rocket Queen"
- Ozzy "Revelation Mother Earth" (though it's not my true favorite - that's "Tonight" - it's up there).
I'm with you on Rocket Queen, but I'd probably go with Black Diamond and Mr. Crowley.
Since I consider Love It To Death Alice Cooper's REAL first album, I'd go with The Ballad Of Dwight Frye.
Boston - Foreplay/Long Time (from Boston)
Good call. I'd probably do with Peace Of Mind.
-
I don't know what my favorite Sonata Arctica song is, but it has to be something off Ecliptica since that's the only album of theirs that I like.

Shame! :tdwn
I don't know if I have one single favorite GnR song but damn if Paradise City or Jungle aren't high on that list...
Black Winter Night by Dragonforce is still one of my favorite DF songs after all these years... and possibly a few others.
-
The Light by Spock's Beard
Get All You Deserve by Steven Wilson (solo career - does this count?)
Wake Up by Arcade Fire
Wait until Haken releases their next album and I'll post celestial elixir here
this too
-
- Judas Priest "Run Of The Mill"
Since I consider Love It To Death Alice Cooper's REAL first album, I'd go with The Ballad Of Dwight Frye.
My second favorite Iron Maiden song is Remember Tomorrow off of their debut. There's times that it challenges Power Slave as my favorite, though.
-
The End, by The Doors. Hell if it wasn't for People Are Strange, my top 5 Doors songs are probably off their debut.
-

Shame! :tdwn
They have the odd song now and then that I enjoy but overall, man, I do not like the direction they took.
But hey, if it's what they want to do, more power to them. I just don't care for it.
-
Boston (Foreplay/Long Time)
Haken (Celestial Elixir)
Good Charlotte (Little Things)
-
Very easy...
Dream Theater - Only a matter of time
-
If it wasn't for WDADU I'd say Learning To Live.
-
The Doors (The End)
Boston (Smokin')
The Cars (Just What I Needed)
Lynyrd Skynyrd (Simple Man)
Appetite for Destruction (Rocket Queen)
Surfer Rosa (Gigantic)
Weezer/Blue Album (Undone – The Sweater Song)
Epicus Doomicus Metallicus by Candlemass (Solitude)
-
Ozzy's Revelation (Mother Earth) is a great choice. Honestly, this one is tough for me. I'll look through my song list.
-
The obvious one for me is King Crimson, where their debut has my two favourite songs of theirs (21st Century and the title track).
EDIT: And I don't know that I have a favourite Linkin Park song, but Hybrid Theory has some really cracking tunes.
EDIT 2: Ooh and Submotion Orchestra - Finest Hour (the title track) is another good one.
EDIT 3: Ok one more, Amplifier - Neon.
-
A few that comes to mind:
Amplifier - Airborne
Kayo Dot - The Manifold Curiosity
Blackfield - Summer
Oasis - Columbia (this is a tricky because favorite Oasis tune changes and might be something from Morning Glory another day)
Interpol - Untitled
Dream Syndicate - The Days of Wine and Roses (Halloween would be #2, in fact many good choices from this album)
-
EDIT: And I don't know that I have a favourite Linkin Park song, but Hybrid Theory has some really cracking tunes.
I was thinking the same thing, but also don't have a favorite song.
-
Amplifier - Airborne
Cool that we both picked different songs by Amplifier. :lol
-
I was going to add Lady Gaga, cause until now I thought The Fame Monster was her first album, but just learned it's her second. Damn.

To be fair it's an amazing debut with several great songs to pick from! :tup

I think Liberation is the weakest song off their debut... Just too long, and though I admit that Kath was a great guitarist, his blues lines can't fill that much time and keep it interesting...
My examples would be:
Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight (of course he has written tons of other great tunes, but no-one can deny that this one is just awesome)
Linkin Park - Papercut
Lift - Abendstunde, Stille Stunde (not sure if anyone knows them here, eastern German prog band from the 70s, beautiful melodies and very intelligent lyrics)
George Harrison - My Sweet Lord
Falco - Ganz Wien (no, Rock Me Amadeus is not his only and by far not his best song)
Toto - Girl Goodbye (ah wait, I totally forgot that IT'S GONNA TAKE A LOT TO TAKE ME AWAYY FROM YUUUUUU)
-
Apart from the already mentioned Linkin Park (where I only like the first 2 albums anyway) with Crawling or Papercut, the only other 2 that come to mind are:
Leprous - Passing from 'Tall Poppy Syndrome'
Redemption - Something Wicked this Way Comes from 'Redemption'
-
Leprous - Passing from 'Tall Poppy Syndrome'
:hefdaddy:
-
I cannot think of any that fit the criteria for me.
-
Speaking of Ozzy, I'll go with Steal Away The Night.
-
Most likely Dio's Holy Diver, even though the first part of his solo carrer is so strong that it's hard to pick a clear favorite song. Don't Talk to Strangers possibly.
-
Ozzy's Revelation (Mother Earth) is a great choice. Honestly, this one is tough for me. I'll look through my song list.
I didn't think of that one, but that would definitely be my favorite Ozzy solo song as well. :tup :tup
I might also throw into the mix:
Heart - my favorite song by them fluctuates between two songs from the debut, Magic Man and Crazy on You, and Mistral Wind.
-
The Dear Hunter - His Hands Matched His Tongue
Shadow Gallery - The Queen of the City of Ice
-
Gun N' Roses - Sweet Child O Mine
Ozzy Osbourne - I Don't Know
There's probably more that I'm not thinking of and there are a few where the band doesn't have 5 albums but that's all I've got for now.
-
The Flower Kings - World of Adventures
Mutemath - Control
Riverside - Curtain Falls
There may be more but this are the ones I can think of
-
Our Lady Peace - Starseed
That's a winner right there; excellent call.
I'm going to add "Sole Survivor" by Asia as well.
-
I don't know what my favorite Sonata Arctica song is, but it has to be something off Ecliptica since that's the only album of theirs that I like.

I'm just surprised you don't at least love Ecliptica if you like Silence! Most people waited to ditch them until after the fourth album. :lol
-
Blackfield - Open Mind
Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues
King Crimson - 21 Century Schizoid Man
Led Zeppelin - Good Times Bad Times
MUTEMATH - Stare at the Sun / Obsolete
Primus - John the Fisherman
Pearl Jam - Black
Radiohead - Creep
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood
Van Halen - Ice Cream Man
-
Pearl Jam - Black is a good call, and is probably mine as well. However, I haven't listened to anything new from Pearl Jam in a long time so who knows; maybe there's a song I'd like better.
-
Thinking about Zeppelin, my favorite of theirs might be "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You."
-
Dixie Dregs - Cruise Control
Alice In Chains - Man in the Box
Scar Symmetry - Obscure Alliance
-
Spock's Beard - The Water
-
King Crimson was mentioned a couple of times, but I can't agree with that... They later released Fractured and Starless!
-
Pearl Jam - Black is a good call, and is probably mine as well. However, I haven't listened to anything new from Pearl Jam in a long time so who knows; maybe there's a song I'd like better.
I struggled with that; "Given To Fly" is a great, great song.
-
Dixie Dregs - Cruise Control
Alice In Chains - Man in the Box
Scar Symmetry - Obscure Alliance
I'd put "Sunshine", but good call with AiC.
-
I cannot think of any that fit the criteria for me.
Outside of the obvious of Boston and GnR, I'd agree. I'll bet there are others, but I can't think of it off the top of my head.
-
Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing
-
Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing
I thought about that, but "Telegraph Road", and side two of "Brothers In Arms".
-
There are a lot of debut records where I like a lot of songs, but I struggle to come up with some that are my favorite songs.
Maybe Devin Townsend (if you don't count Punky Brüster) with Regulator or Bastard or Funeral?
-
Maybe Devin Townsend (if you don't count Punky Brüster) with Regulator or Bastard or Funeral?
But Larrys O is better than all of those. :tup
-
I know that couple of people here like CHVRCHES, so "Night Sky" from their first album!
-
King Crimson was mentioned a couple of times, but I can't agree with that... They later released Fractured and Starless!
Exactly. Starless is their masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.
Radiohead - Creep
and while I think Creep is a good song, this is pretty much a ridiculous call. They've released numerous songs that are far, far better.
-
I guess I'm waiting on Haken like some other folks.
Dio is a good call, Rainbow in the Dark or Don't Talk to Strangers or a title track, I would pick one of those.
-
Ozzy Osbourne - I Don't Know
1st track of the 1st album.
Next level!
-
Pearl Jam - Black is a good call, and is probably mine as well. However, I haven't listened to anything new from Pearl Jam in a long time so who knows; maybe there's a song I'd like better.
Their newish album Sirens was pretty good. But I usually go back to the old stuff.
-

I agree with you, musically. I just can't get into the vocals too much even though I've spent a lot of time trying. The only time the vocals gave me chills was on Creep. But musically I think OK Computer is a superior album.
-
Radiohead - Creep
and while I think Creep is a good song, this is pretty much a ridiculous call. They've released numerous songs that are far, far better.
What's ridiculous is putting "Radiohead" and "good" in the same sentence. :)
-
A Moon Shaped Pool is a m a z i n g.
-

I didn’t do that :) :) :)
-
The Cars 'Good Times Roll'
Steppenwolf 'Born To Be Wild'
(really had to dig down for this)
-
What's ridiculous is putting "Radiohead" and "good" in the same sentence. :)
, says the guy who likes Kiss. :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
-
There are radiohead songs I like a fair bit and creep is not one of them
Like it's not bad but not particularly interesting
-
Night Ranger - Sing Me Away
The Outfield - Every Time You Cry
Bad Company - Ready For Love
REM - 9-9
-
Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name
-
I'm not familiar with much arcade fire besides the first album so I'll second that one sure

Exactly this! even though I absolutely love Haken, Celestial Elixir is absolute perfection for me! (I even think that it will eventually be one of my top 3 songs ever by any band).
-
Asia -- most of my favorite songs are on the debut album.
Queensryche -- Queen of the Reich.
