"Tobias Sammet describes the title track in his own words, "a ten minutes track featuring a vocal battle between Jorn Lande, Russell Allen and me"."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wicked_Symphony
Looking forward to it, I like Avantasia a lot.
At first I thought you were talking about the singer with the " i'm outta love, set me free, put me out of my misery" song but I was wrong.
Tobias is generic, and I'm not the biggest power metal fan, but any song with Jorn Lande is sure to be awesome. The Scarecrow's title track was epic.
And a song described as Jorn Lande vs. Russel Allen, the two best vocalists in power metal (alongside Roy Khan and Hansi, of course)? Count me in.
No Jorn=No Listen.
I like it. I have an Avantasia album on my computer but haven't listened to it yet, but I like Edguy, so...
The only Edguy album I've heard/have is Tears of A Mandrake, and it's good, sometimes I grow bored of it, others I slightly rock out to it. Not bad though. Now I'm excited to listen to Avantasia if you guys say they're far superior.Superior is a very subjective word. For a more objective point of view, I would say Avantasia is far more epic than Edguy. :D
Okay, we'll go with that ;)The only Edguy album I've heard/have is Tears of A Mandrake, and it's good, sometimes I grow bored of it, others I slightly rock out to it. Not bad though. Their 3 albums are incredible. You can't go wrong with them, just have in mind that The Scarecrow is very different from the two Metal Operas. The one I have is The Scarecrow
:( I'm sure there was a good reason for him not being on it though.
Samples of all the songs:

The Ripper track sounded good as did the first Russell Allen song, but a lot of these songs sound pretty boring. Although the first two Avantasia CDs were cheesy as fuck, I think Tobias is better suited for Power Metal.
I've given The Wicked Symphony about 8 spins the past two days, and it my early impression is that it starts off strong and just slowly leaves my consciousness because very little past the third track is grabbing my attention.
I should have Angel of Babylon next week. Hopefully its significantly better.
It's already ordered, so it will get its chance. I think it goes beyond one bad song, becuase I have other CDs where one weak track doesn't kill the rest of the album. I agree with your previous post though, more Ripper Owens would have been a good thing; and Russell Allen is on top of his game...those two points might explain why I lose a lot of interest after "Scales of Justice".
Would you all say this is better, worse, or equal to the Scarecrow?
Jorn back with Masterplan????
OOooooooo goody!!!!
I got my copy of Angel of Babylon yesterday. I have a question for those of you who own it - does your copy have "hiccups" at the beginning of tracks 2 and 10?
OK...its not a hiccup, the first two seconds of tracks 2 and 10 are the same as the last 2 seconds of tracks 1 and 9; so it sounds like it skips.
I'll check later. I just ripped the cd straight to my computer, I've never psychically played the cd. I'll get it out later and let you know.
Scales Of Justice is the best them :metal
Scales Of Justice is the best them :metal
Which is proof there should have been more Ripper tracks.
I would have liked more Andre Matos, Russell Allen, and Klaus Meine. It also sucks that the only song with a female vocalist is probably one of the worst songs Avantasia has ever released. He could have definitely done a better job incorporating the female sound into a few more songs. "What Kind of Love" from the Scarecrow is one of the most powerful songs they have, and the interplay between male and female voices is a big part of that.
Also, as much as I am a fan of the shorter hits, Sammet's best work is ALWAYS his epics. Just take a look at the songs from The Metal Opera, The Scarecrow, and TWS/AoB. (The Tower, Seven Angels, The Scarecrow, The Wicked Symphony, Runaway Train, etc) Every one of the longer more developed songs is nothing short of brilliant. Even with Edguy the songs that tend to be longer and more progressive are usually the best of their respective album. The short ones definitely are great too, but they can be hit or miss for sure. I know Sammet has got this fetish for classic-rock styled metal metal (hence the massive jorn influences), but he really is selling himself short by not going all out with more of the epic.
Yeah, got that on preorder with Play.com. Hoping for a return to form.
The Avantasia Flying Opera DVD is pretty special- have you got that?
Thought Sascha Paeth played well on that, though I do like widdly widdly guitar. I've always loved his production work.

Yeah, really amazing DVD. I like Sascha, but I've never been blown away by him, he did play very well though. His production skills are much better than his guitar. Oliver played really well too, a great addition to the band. I wished Henjo stayed as the main guitarist of Avantasia, his playing just slays Sascha's, not even a competition.

I think it's worth saying that the album version of that song is 8 minutes long.
I've been listening to WS and AoB more recently and Toby seems to be keeping his best songs for Avantasia.
I got the album a week ago. I got the 2CD but never got a signed card. Oh well. I actually don't know what to think about this album. It has some good songs but overall I don't think the songs are that strong. I've listened to it about three times and nothing really excited me. I love the diversity of the tracks, Jens guitar playing has really improved and Tobi seems comfortable. It needed more faster tracks. It's actually on a par with TS at the moment.
Halfway through Age Of The Joker and it's easily their best album since Mandrake, IMO!
Tobias seems to have gotten a bit raspier, which is a good thing. A cross between Biff Byford and Michael Kiske.
Wolf, giving Hellfire Club a spin today.....
I played Hellfire Club at work today. Not too loud obviously, but I'll try and compare the discs a little more closely. I have basically written Edguy off. I like a band with a sense of humor, but it really started to unbalance the talent in this band.
What's the best Avantasia to get? I'm leaning towards Scarecrow. I WILL check them out soon. My birthday is next week, so I will score one Avantasia CD, I promise!
Wolf, giving Hellfire Club a spin today.....It seems Tobi is saving all his really good stuff for Avantasia these days.
Well, I got my first Avantasia album a couple of weeks ago. Wicked Symphony.
It's really not bad at all. Obviously I love the Kiske sung Wastelands, but to me, the best track on the album is Scales Of Justic. Ripper just..well..RIPS! :metal
Also, quite surprised to see Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer involved. Didin't realize that they were part of the European Power Metal "family".
Much like Ayreon, that's a dream only a Euro can hold. Once you add in all the extra singers it would be pretty much impossible to tour America. But I do hope Avantasia tours again, and that Ayreon does do a few live shows at some point.Yeah, well I wouldn't mind, personally, because I am from Germany and I think that it would be given that they would play in Germany. But I can see how it wouldn't be financially feasible to tour outside of Europe.
I don't see why Tobi wouldn't bring Avantasia to the stage again, especially after the good comments and success over the last two. Plus, comparing those to the latest Edguy is like comparing shit and chocolate, that was very ordinary.Hell yes, I hope so. They haven't done an album that I dislike (Avantasia that is), so no complaints from me here.
I've had the feeling for a while now that Tobi saves his best material for Avantasia and Edguy get the leftovers.
I've had the feeling for a while now that Tobi saves his best material for Avantasia and Edguy get the leftovers.
It's been starting since Rocket Ride (even though that's a good album) and has been gettin worse ever since.

Yeah, this, unfortunately. He brings the best out of Jorn on the Avantasia albums though.
Do it. Start with The Scarecrow, one of the best power metal albums of all time.
You can thank me later.
Much like Nick, I love Avantasia, but I'm completely indifferent to Edguy.
Same here. Edguy is just generic power metal to me.Much like Nick, I love Avantasia, but I'm completely indifferent to Edguy.
Never really could get into Edguy the same way I've gotten into Avantasia
NEW AVANTASIA EPIC IN THE MAKING!
What many have recently been speculating about we're now happy to confirm. Tobias is indeed working on a new AVANTASIA epic that is planned to be released in spring 2013. Concept wise the album will be a classic Rock-Opera / Metal Opera. It's going to be a timeless fairytale, that despite its fantasy appeal, was inspired by happenings of our modern age and society. You‘ll find plenty of further details here at tobiassammet.com in the near future.
Originally Tobias wanted to lay AVANTASIA to rest after the release of its live DVD "Flying Opera" in April 2011, which topped the charts in Germany, Austria and Sweden and went Top 10 all over Europe, respectively after its headliner appearance at Wacken Open Air 2011 in front of more than 100,000 fans. About the surprising return of AVANTASIA Tobias says:
"Even though I love to record and tour with Edguy, I didn‘t foresee how much I need AVANTASIA when I decided to finish this chapter of my life in 2011. I didn't know if there would be another AVANTASIA album one day, but I didn‘t feel like doing it. After the worldwide success of the latest studio releases, an arena world tour that was sold out pretty much everywhere, collaborations with childhood heroes like Alice Cooper, Klaus Meine, Rudolf Schenker, Eric Singer of Kiss etc. I 'knew' that I had said everything I could possibly say in the name of AVANTASIA. But that's not what AVANTASIA is all about. I wanna create more great music, I wanna create more fantasy-worlds, the bigger and the more epic, the better. And listening to the material that I have created for this forthcoming chapter in the history of AVANTASIA, I know there is no way, I am not going to do it! I have got the feeling and the certainty, that this is absolutely meant to happen and to be! - Cheerz, Tobi"
There's no reason why Edguy needs to be the poor cousin other than Toby must be saving the better songs for Avantasia. The bands' styles are similar, the musicians up to the job. The only real difference is the concept and the fact that Toby sings everything with Edguy.
I'm quite happy with both to exist but the Edguy album needs to have the same "love" put into it or that will change.
AVANTASIA TO HIT THE STAGE IN APRIL 2013
Tobias' tour management is currently working on a headlining indoor tour for Avantasia in April. They will also play a few chosen summer festivals, and a South American and Asian tour is planned for late summer.
Tobias comments: "I know I once said we weren't gonna do it again, but then I don‘t see a reason to let this die. I wanna put on the biggest thing you have ever seen, I wanna bring more vocalists, play longer shows, and just make it a giant Rock Opera. I love to headline festivals, you run over people in 90 minutes and kick ass. But I also like to do our own Avantasia indoor tour because we can make it much more Avantasia oriented and play almost three hours without caring about anything else but Avantasia. So we said, we have to do a giant indoor tour as well, and it's going to happen in April. I am so looking forward to it. The stage designer has just showed me his stage and light design, and it looks absolutely killer. It will be huge. 2013 will be a major year for Avantasia, and people don't have a clue how big things are actually going to be! I am very excited - the album will be amazingly epic, and the tour will be too!"
Tourdates will be announced soon here at tobiassammet.com!
NOVEMBER 29, 2012
AVANTASIA LIVE IN FRANCE
Good news again: AVANTASIA are confirmed to play their first ever show in France! Amongst bands such as KISS, Korn and Twisted Sister, AVANTASIA will hit the stage at Hellfest in Clisson to play a 90-minutes headlining show!
Tobias comments: "It's amazing. We are working on this great album which is scheduled to be out in late March by the way, and I have such a great feeling about it as the first tracks sound really huge. Now, we have announced that we'll do a little tour and all of the sudden we're getting the opportunity to headline shows and festivals all over the world! Czech Republic, England, France, Belgium... A lot of first time AVANTASIA appearances. But this is not it! More dates are being scheduled. In April we'll do Europe. Our own tour, doing 2 - 3 hours! No support act, just AVANTASIA in arenas and theaters. Further information and dates coming soon."
To make sure you don't miss an announcement before the shows sell out, sign up for the "Backstage-Section" above and subscribe to the newsletter! Next we're going to announce more details about the forthcoming album! Stay tuned!
NOVEMBER 29, 2012
AVANTASIA LIVE IN ENGLAND
After having been confirmed as next year's headlining act of Masters Of Rock Festival (Czech Republic) and Power Prog Festival (Belgium), Avantasia are also confirmed to hit the stage at Bloodstock Festival in England. These shows are going to mark Avantasia's first appearances in England and Belgium. Guests, information about the forthcoming album and further tourdates will be announced soon! So stay tuned!
Commented Sammet: "To me, he used to be what John D. Rockerduck is to Scrooge McDuck: an adamant longtime rival; in our case, when it comes to producing rock operas. Well, if you can't beat your enemy, make him your ally! And so I opened the door and literally invited pestilence into my world, ha!
"Seriously, the truth is that the 'pestilence' I'm talking about is really one of the nicest, coolest and loveliest plagues I've ever come to know, an ambitious artist through and through and a real great guitar player. So, having just come back from a shopping tour in 2912 — where apparently he found himself a brand new pair of bad-ass pants and boots — he went into the studio to record some additional lead guitar for the forthcoming AVANTASIA album, 'The Mystery Of Time': AYREON mastermind Arjen Anthony Lucassen!"
ERIC MARTIN OF MR. BIG JOINS AVANTASIA
In March the new Avantasia album "The Mystery Of Time" will be released. The list of featured artists who have been confirmed for the album reads like a who-is-who in Rock and Metal: Now another legend of Rock history has been announced: Eric Martin of US-platinum sellers MR. BIG is singing a role on the album and will join AVANTASIA on stage during the "Mystery World Tour", starting in April.
After Biff Byford (Saxon), Eric Martin (Mr. Big), Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, Unisonic), Bruce Kulick (ex-KISS, ex-Meat Loaf), Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids) and Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, ex-Vengeance) another guest star has been revealed: legendary former Deep Purple, Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen vocalist Joe Lynn Turner will appear on the new Avantasia album "The Mystery Of Time" (to be released in March). More details here at tobiassammet.com soon!
In March the new Avantasia album "The Mystery Of Time" will be released worldwide. Lyrically it marks a conceptual story again, and the tracklist reads as follows: Spectres, The Watchmakers' Dream, Black Orchid, Where Clock Hands Freeze, Sleepwalking, Savior In The Clockwork, Invoke The Machine, What's Left Of Me, Dweller In A Dream and The Great Mystery.
Buff Byford is easily the most underrated vocalist in metal. He sounds better than ever, especially when you take into account the miles on his voice.
I like the tracklisting, but that cover is pretty laughable.

Yeah, I'm surprised you can't p
re order already, it's only out in less than 5 weeks.
Isn't this being released next week?
Just gave the album a proper listen. To me, this is Avantasia's most powerful album EVER! Every other album usually had a song or two which were just fillers and would decrease the overall grade..... but on this one, I like every single one! He made a few longer-than-ten-minutes-songs which maybe even have a few nuances of prog, but maybe just my perception. Anyway, get it! Adorable stuff!
USA release date is April 16th.
I'm getting mine from CD Japan, bonus track for Japan only.
Anyone know what is on the 2nd disc?
Is it purely instrumental versions of the album or something different?

How much did you pay for the Japan edition?
I really like it. Great album.

Damn straight. One of my fav concert DVDs.
Trying to figure out if its worh spending $450 or so to see them at the festival in Quebec in a couple of mins they just announced. I'm pretty certain it is. Not like they'll be coming to North America any other time in my life.
"Our own tour, doing 2 - 3 hours! No support act, just AVANTASIA in arenas and theaters." :omg: Seriously... gonna rage if there's nothing in NA.
They won't. They'd be throwing money away.

My rage is over. Just bought my ticket for the Quebec City Festival. Cashed in points for the flight, hotel and a car rental. Overall, $250 to see Avantasia. Booyah!!! Nick, get yourself a damn passport and c'mon up.
I'll lay my love into Amanda Somerville for anyone who wants me to.

Favourite songs from the album, anyone? I'd probably say Where Clock Hands Freeze, Black Orchid and Savior in the Clockwork.

The guest vocalists don't stand out nearly as much
What an amazing show last night. Will post a full review and pics in the coming days (when I'm back home and at a PC), but damn! Just DAMN!!!
Reach Out for the Light - Kiske! When he first came out (before hitting the mic) I swear from the distance I was at, I was scared it was Tate!!! :lol... then when he started singing I knew it wasn't.:lol
Avantasia - here's where I knew something was up. Kiske announced he was going to be doing a bunch of parts he hadn't done before, and had a monitor with the lyrics at the front of the stage to help him through it. He did this one on his own (with Somerville and Thomas Rettke on backing vocals). We'd find out later that Tobi was down with a fever all afternoon, and it was a virtual miracle that he even made it on stage at all - but being their first show in North America, I'm sure he wasn't going to miss it for anything.
Fuck, if I saw Amanda in a hotel room, look out.
Fuck, if I saw Amanda in a hotel room, look out.
To be fair, I only saw her in the lobby. :lol
Almost agree with you re: Oli. On Stage, he's definitely more important than Sascha now with (almost) all the Lande vocal duties along with his own and backing. However, overall contributions to Avantasia, Sascha is still more crucial.
Despite being sick and not able to do the normal quantity of singing, Tobi's quality and stage presence sure didn't suffer.
Yeah, I listened to it a few of times leading up to the concert, and it just got better with every listen. It's definitely Top 5 at the moment. Not sure it will get to #1, but it's definitely one of the best so far.

#1 is reserved for Dream Theater! :D
I'm not even a huge Tobi guy (vocally), but even he sounds fantastic. What a great songwriter.
Hmm, you didn't mention Arjen's glorious guitar solo.
Album ranking time!
The Wicked Symphony
The Scarecrow
Angel Of Babylon
The Mystery Of Time
The Metal Opera Part I
The Metal Opera Part II

Get Angel Of Babylon. It's not as good as Wicked Symphony or Scarecrow, but it's got it's fair share of awesome moments.
Awesome! What was the whole setlist at the show you went to, if you remember?Yeah, this is it:

To TAC... ^this. And since its a 3-part saga, you kinda have to have it. Wolfking will disagree, but The Metal Opera can wait. It's not that it's bad, but it's like the chicks that finish 5th and 6th in a Miss Universe contest.
Daved was my fav part of Metal Opera 2. Love his vocals and delivery. I have a couple of Virgin Steele albums, they are pretty good, but I need to check their earlier stuff.

Also, If Tobias stuck to writing and not singing, I'd like Avantasia a LOT more!
Sounds like he's trying to be both Michael Kiske AND Jon Bon Jovi at the same time!
Nice! Avantasia with less Tobi and MORE KISKE! :tup :tup :tup
Seriously, for me, Vocally Tobi is easily the weak link in Avantasia and has really stopped me from getting into them.
There really should be an Amanda Somerville Thread.
Speaking of Avantasia, I tried listening to Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2, and although I couldn't get through the whole thing, I reminded me of Avantasia. It's crazy how influential that album is, but sad that the originater of Power Metal sounds dirivitive.
Ah, Mystery Of Time is very good, but I'd say the three preceding it (The Scarecrow, The Wicked Symphony and The Angel of Babylon) are all better.
Thanks to the Metal Voice 2013 top 10 album list, I'm listening to the new one. I'm about halfway through. So far, Black Orchid was the song that tipped the scale for me.
And don't worry about new emoticons. I've added a few recently. In fact, I just added another new one a few minutes ago. ...not that anyone will find it before it is revealed (except the person who helped me create it).
Who has? I don't remember anyone ever mentioning this band to me.
Holy crap solo and background riff in Savior In The Clockwork! :panicattack: :2metal:
Who has? I don't remember anyone ever mentioning this band to me.
Well maybe not directly depending on the threads you read (or don't). Kade and Chad have certainly fought their corner. But there again, you only just found Maiden...
Definitely one of the better finds DTF has introduced me to. Can't say much more than I already did here. https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=35218.msg1557097#msg1557097
Enjoy the ride Bosk. You've got 6 fabulous albums to explore. Incredibly, I was spinning The Metal Opera today, as I think I'm gonna start an Avantasia Survivor when I get home this weekend.
Standard. That was all they had, and I didn't know there was a digi with bonus tracks (if I had known, I might have held out for that). Are the bonus tracks any good? If so, maybe I'll d/l them from Amazon.

One song is Tobi's version of the song Death is Just A Felling originally with Jon Oliva from Angel of Babylon which is cool. The other song The Cross and You is an awesome stand alone rocking track, definitely worth your time.
This album is literally dripping with cheese. I think I need to change this emoticon code. :avantasia:
But extreme cheesiness or not, I have got the chorus of The Watchmaker's Dream stuck in my head and it won't get out! ...and I think I like it.
Who is the singer that sounds a lot like Russell Allen? I'm still not able to pick out the different voices (partly because the album is still new, but also because I haven't really listened to any of these singers before, believe it or not)
The concept for Metal Opera never interested me as its the usual, fantasy-ish Rock Opera.
The Wicked Trilogy on the other hand....is an excellent concept.
I probably won't care but how does those albuns sound?
Conceptually, I think the The Metal Opera I & II are pretty weak, but the music's really solid. They are more power metal, though, whereas the Wicked Trilogy is more hard rock, modern metal type stuff.
To be fair as I said before, this album is the weakest when it comes to showing off the other vocalists. Most of them do a amazing job but they don't really stand out at all for some reason.

I found alot of the voices pretty similar this time round. Songs were great though and that saved it.
Concept wise, I never really thought about it as the initial story seemed like a load of bollocks to me. Not followed the story since that first album.
Yeah, I never got into any bands he has been in. But he sounds great.Bosk, surely you recognize Joe Lynn Turner from those early 80's Rainbow albums. He's the guy that sang Stone Cold.

Am I the only one who likes Wasteland?
Its actually my fav. Of the wicked symphony, so its why I asked as I think its way way better than other songs, besides the Scarecrow album.

And even better, Yngwie's Odyssey album.
Also, bosk, since your new found love for this album, I've gone back to it and been spinning it, and loving it actually. I thought it was quite weak when it first came out, but time has let this thing grow nicely. It's really well done, and could be better than both Wicked Symphony and Angel of Babylon IMO.

TOBIAS & EDGUY WORKING ON A NEW ALBUM
This news has been a long time coming. Secretly Tobias and Edguy have sneaked into the studio to record the follow up to their chartbreaking 2011 album "Age Of The Joker" (eg. no. 3 in the German album charts). The band has issued the following brief statement from the studio:
“We have focused on what makes this band unique and recorded what we believe is going to be the strongest & heaviest album Edguy has ever recorded. We didn't waste any time with updates or distractions. There is no doubt, that this album is going to be the album Edguy will be measured against in the future. And it makes us proud to say that as a band that has been existing for over 22 years now, fully aware that the best is yet to come.“
The album is in the mixing process right now and will be out in April. Details will be revealed soon.

And it makes us proud to say that as a band that has been existing for over 22 years now, fully aware that the best is yet to come.“
The album is in the mixing process right now and will be out in April. Details will be revealed soon.

I didn't even bother with the last Edguy album. From what i heard it was firm in my mind that Toby was saving all his best material for Avantasia.
That said I'll give the new one when it comes a chance.

There was no need to check the last one at all, pretty crap.
NEW EDGUY ALBUM "SPACE POLICE" OUT ON APRIL 18TH
On April 18th Edguy will release their tenth studio album "SPACE POLICE - Defenders Of The Crown". Last weekend some journalists had the chance to listen to the album for the first time and the press reaction was amazing. There are several good reasons to believe that this album is going to be one of the strongest and heaviest Edguy albums of all time. More details are going to be revealed soon.
Doesn't every band ever say that their new album is their best?
It has to be better than the previous two though, doesn't it :xbones?
I'm completely 100% the opposite - I would rather have him focus totally with Sascha and Avantasia. I don't know Edguy much, but most people around here say THAT has totally gone to shit

I think you'd like Hellfire Club and Rocket Ride Chad. Last couple have not been up to much compared to those.
On April 18th Edguy will release their tenth studio album "SPACE POLICE - DEFENDERS OF THE CROWN", followed by a world tour to kick off in Hamburg on September 19th. A few journalists already had the chance to give the album a listen and confirmed it's most probably the heaviest album Edguy have ever recorded ("One thing is for certain: this is definitely one of the best, if not THE best album of them ever, ever, ever" - Rock It Magazine, #80).
The track list of the album reads as follows:
1. SABRE & TORCH
2. SPACE POLICE
3. DEFENDERS OF THE CROWN
4. LOVE TYGER
5. THE REALMS OF BABA YAGA
6. ROCK ME AMADEUS
7. DO ME LIKE A CAVEMAN
8. SHADOW EATERS
9. ALONE IN MYSELF
10. THE ETERNAL WAYFARER
The album is also going to be available as a 2CD edition with 7 bonus tracks. More details about tourdates to be revealed during the next weeks at www.edguy.net
It is indeed a cover of that song Chad. I think they'll do it justice   Could be good.

How do you know?
Does Tobias write all the Avantasia music and lyrics himself? I know with Edguy he writes pretty much everything himself, but only does the vocals on the albums and during live performances. Does he play guitar or bass on the Avantasia recordings and live shows?
I think he sings great on Mandrake......................Kiske has been known to overdo it on the vibrato too. Possibly the only thing that ever annoys me a bit with either of those guys.
I was hoping for a Do Me Like A Caveman bonus video ;D
So in other words, Tobias Sammet is a very technical singer and not good live?
One thing Kiske has going for him is that there are not tons of miles on his voice.
Technically, he was on few tours with Avantasia, but of course singing a few songs every evening can't be compared with performing full two-hours setlist.
Just a couple of shows I think.Yup, very few. A couple of small club shows in their infancy. If I recall from the videos posted on the Kiske page, he was even reading lyrics from a sheet of paper.
And Toby isn't coasting on the vocal.Yeah, he's definitely pushing it. Nice!

Fuckin cool video. Pretty good 80's inspired tune too.
Apparently this new album has elements that are more like earlier Edguy like Mandrake. Should be interesting.
I still haven't heard it. But I'm expecting something similar to their lack 2 or 3 albums, which is good to me! But i HAVE heard Tobi compare it to Rocket Ride and MANDRAKE. Now, the last few albums have had a more, hmmmm, shall i say, 'obvious' sound? Meaning the melodies and structures are more easy to digest for the masses, there's more 'pop' elements. Like Superheroes, 2 out of 7, Rocket Ride etc. as opposed to How Many Miles, Vain Glory Opera, Golden Dawn etc..
Anyone know what I mean? Their last few albums have had less of that 'euro' power metal sound and style of their earlier stuff. So I'm curious, are there any songs on the new album that can be compared to the earlier stuff in that way? I realize it probably has the newer Edguy production sound and mix, with the guitars and the way Tobi has been sounding recently. But are any of the songs comparable to the earlier stuff in terms of structure? Is there still that Helloween sound to their music?
BTW, I think their best CDs are Rocket Ride, AoJ, and Hellfire Club. What was so great about Hellfire Club was that, at least to my ears, a classic full of classic sounding power metal. It had that Helloween influence, but also had a Maiden influence, even some Priest. But they have not continued in that direction, it seems.
I do wish the Amadeus cover song wasn't on the album. It's good, but I'd rather something else. It should have been a bonus track, definitely.
BTW, who else thinks that the best early Edguy album is The Savage Poetry? (by early, i mean before Mandrake). Anyone else hear a huge Maiden influence on TSP?
After a few more listens, this is actually really growing on me, a lot.
On first listen I though Baba Yaga was one of the weakest, now I think it's one of the strongest.

I love Baba Yaga!
I thought Caveman was a bit of filler at first but love it now. There's parts of Shadow Eaters I don't love, but certainly not a skipper. A great Edguy album. I haven't taken this album out of the car cd changer since I got it and that says it all. Nothing else this year has stayed in this long.
I love the way he sings the lyrics 'Do me like a caveman' at the end of the verse right before the solo. I find it really funny for some reason. And yea it is definitely one of the best on there. And I agree that the album feels too short. I don't even know how many songs these albums have and am too lazy to look it up, but Rocket Ride and AoJ feel like very long albums with lots of songs, which IMO is good cuz i love those albums. And I love Space Police, but it does feel too short.
And I actually wish the Def Leppard song was on the album instead of Amadeus. But that might be because I love Def Leppard. That songs sounds like it's straight of something like Hysteria.
And I actually wish the Def Leppard song was on the album instead of Amadeus.
There's some straight-up power metal on it, hopefully enough to keep THOSE fans happy ;p
It would probably be smarter for Tobi to pimp Avantasia these days over Edguy.
I'd probably be more likely to grab an Edguy album than Avantasia , but as wolfking noted I'm talking the Mandrake/Rocket Ride/Hellfire Club type stuff. I find I'm getting sick and tired of the multi vocalist stuff.
Didn't know Avantasia was touring again. I'm disappointed. The focus should be on Edguy touring because, first of all, they have a new album out. I LOVE Edguy, yet i have very little interest in Avantasia.
I also really hope there is another Edguy album before another Avantasia album. It will be so disappointing to see that happen

Seriously, you'd take Edguy live over an absolute spectacular show like this?

Been listening to Wicked Trilogy recently. Dadgum these are great albums, not a weak song between the three of them.
Current ranking:
1. Wicked Symphony
2. The Scarecrow
3. Angel of Babylon
Honestly the only songs on AOB that I'd consider less than great are Your Love Is Evil
That statement blows my mind. So which songs do you consider weak?
Also, Death is Just a Feeling is a mediocre version of The Toy Master
Scarecrow wasn't next? I might be chronologically challenged. It was after though, no?
Resurrecting this thread. I started listening to Avantasia about 8 months ago, but now Im very familiar with their discography and I really enjoy The Mystery of Time album. That and The Scarecrow are masterpiece albums IMO.
"Folks - I've sneaked into Avantasia FB again. Besides advertising tomorrow night's TS Rockshow at radiobob.de with some great news - I'll also post a picture here that shall get you in a certain mood. A little bird has told me that tomorrow at 3PM CET (15:00) our press people will reveal some great news here. You got any idea??! I'm curious... - Tobi"
AVANTASIA - NEW ALBUM & TOUR 2016
Big news: In January 2016 AVANTASIA are going to release the sequel to "The Mystery Of Time". The next chapter of the saga will be called "GHOSTLIGHTS". In March the all-star ensemble will kick off the GHOSTLIGHTS WORLD TOUR, and the tickets are on presale now. For information go to avantasia.net. Also, if you want us to keep you up to date sign up for the newsletter at avantasia.net
"Folks, I've spent months in the basement working on new material: Amazing stuff, diverse, epic, a little progressive even. Long tracks. Orchestra. Celtic stuff… We're still in the middle of the process, but it's so inspiring to work with all these great musicians and come up with a new chapter of Avantasia. And YES - against all odds - WE'LL DO A FUCKING TOUR!!!!!! In March we'll hit the road, and we're gonna play over three hours to do material of all eras, from 'The Metal Opera' to the new album. I definitely wanna make this the biggest Avantasia show we have ever put on stage! I am excited, and I can't wait to finish and unleash the beast. Thank you all - best fans in the world - for letting me live my dream!!! -Tobi"
On the album - mother fucking fuck yes!:2metal:
So there's gonna be a new Avantasia album.....and I'm really disappointed. I honestly do not care about Avantasia. I'm a huge Tobias Sammet fan, but with Edguy. I just can't get interested in Avantasia. I think a part of it is that Edguy is a really BAND band, you know?
I'd much prefer Edguy work off the momentum and do a new album. Space Police a a really successful album, not just critically but with sales. Stick with the real band. I love Edguy, I hate seeing Tobi doing a new Avantasia album now because based on the past, it could be 2 or 3 Avantasia albums before he returns to Edguy.

To each their own, I have the opposite opinion.
Edguy jumped the shark with Hellfire Club.
Edguy is alright, Avantasia is incredible. Not really any comparison, in my opinion.
I actually gave up on Edguy. Space Police is the first one that I did not even sample. maybe I should check it out. They just seem so goofy at this point.
. It's their best since Rocket Ride for me but I know that isn't necessarily a glowing recommendation.:lol
Avantasia, without a doubt. I like most Edguy, love some of it... but it's the same formula, and pretty standard power metal. High end power metal mind you, but there's nothing that makes it stand out from the likes of Kamelot, Primal Fear, and a dozen other power metal acts I could rhyme off.
Avantasia on the other hand is where Tobi gets incredibly creative, takes risks, and is able to spread his compositional wings. Avantasia is an automatic pre-buy. I even flew to Quebec for a weekend to see them - surely wouldn't have done that for Edguy.
Edguy jumped the shark with Hellfire Club.

Err...not really, the quality just dipped. Space Police was really good and a great return to form.
I agree..............although I never really gave Space Police much time to grow on me. I would tend to grab Rocket Ride or Mandrake over the rest......or Avantasia.Edguy jumped the shark with Hellfire Club.

Not for me. The early albums were a bit naive and rough round the edges. It started to come together with Mandrake, Hellfire Club and Rocket Ride, then things slipped a bit with TS and AotJ (both better on recent replays than I thought at the time). SP was very good though.
Not sure if anyone saw this, but Wacken's youtube channel uploaded 3 songs from their performance last year and its significantly better than the other youtube videos and the audio is actually solid, you can hear the vocalists
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=px6zHODp9As (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=px6zHODp9As)
Savage Poetry is fucking great and underrated.
I have Rocket Ride, Hellfire Club, and Age Of The Joker. Maybe I should dig them out.
The thing is, I'm not in love with Tobi as a vocalist, but I prefer the earlier stuff where I felt he was at least serious.
My go to Edguy album is The Savage Poetry.
He's tried to stop sounding like Kiske with the vibrato which has really defined him as a singer now IMO.
He's tried to stop sounding like Kiske with the vibrato which has really defined him as a singer now IMO.
You know the first time that I heard him, I thought he sounded like Kiske Lite. He's not in Kiske's league, but you can tell how much he is influenced by him.
I've always thought of Tobi as a cross between Kiske and Bon Jovi.
There was a great interview a while back where Kiske basically credits Tobi with his return to hard rock.
He was like Kiske but with so much more.
Got an email from CD Japan yesterday, new Avantasia EP November 18th.

JORN IS BACK GUYS
JORN TO JOIN AVANTASIA AGAIN
"It is with great pleasure that I can announce the Beast From The North to join forces with Avantasia once again. The STRIKING VIKING: Jorn Lande! We've just finished his vocal recordings and he sounds - what a surprise - KILLER! Jorn is a monster! It is with even greater pleasure to let you know that Jorn is gonna do the world tour next year, kicking off in March! AVANTASIA LIVE - 3hours every night, from the Metal Opera to the new album Ghostlights. We'll be an epic line up and we'll deliver an epic show. Check tourdates at avantasia.net and get your tickets before we sell out!
Stay tuned & cheerz, Tobi"
January AVANTASIA's 7th studio album "GHOSTLIGHTS" will hit the stores. After Jorn Lande another guest star can be announced: Former QUEENSRYCHE-, and now OPERATION MINDCRIME vocalist GEOFF TATE!
Tobias comments: "I am proud to announce a very special guest today: Mr. Geoff Tate! I have been fortunate enough to meet many amazing classic Metal vocalists. Whenever we've talked about our influence as vocalists the name Geoff Tate was brought up. Throughout his incredible career of more than 30 years Geoff has constantly explored new territory as an artist and vocalist, while he has always managed to maintain this distinctive signature vocal sound that makes him stand out. His contribution sounds nothing but amazing, and you will immediately know why the man had such a huge impact on vocalists and fans around the globe! Enchanting, unique, amazing, progressive in the purest sense of the word! Thank you for joing the Avantasia family, Geoff Tate!"
Maybe Tobi can remove all of Tate's flaws in production.(https://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o669/bolsters/Peelaugh.gif~original)
At least the music will be good. Maybe Tobi can remove all of Tate's flaws in production.
This is looking good.
Avantasia is going to release another album, and here's the lineup!
Tobias Sammet - vocals
Michael Kiske - vocals
Kai Hansen - vocals & guitars
Andi Deris - vocals (don't worry, he only speaks the introduction)
This is looking good.
Well, it was.
This is looking good.
Well, it was.
I lol'd. hard.
It just taints the whole project.
It just taints the whole project.
I see what you did there.
I'm fine with it. It's a different vocalist and maybe he's only on one song and it's a song that suits him. I'll hold judgement until I hear. My hopes are not let down for this yet.
Tate is a name I would expect to see in Timo Tolkki's Avalon, not Avantasia :(
I do wonder how Tate will do with decent lyrics written for him for once though... Just hope he doesn't join the tour as it's the first time i'm going to see Avantasia and that would put a damper on it. Can't imagine Tate singing ANY Avantasia back catalog at all.
Kiske always delivers.Always!
It will be kinda weird having Kiske and Geoff Tate on the same album considering how similar they sound.
Anyone remember the talk in the late 80's/early 90's about a project that was to be called The Three Tremors featuring Tate, Dickinson and Halford in their prime? That would've been something.

Yep, and I found this little interview from 2014:
https://demolishmag.wordpress.com/2014/01/12/the-three-tremors-halford-dickinson-tate/ (https://demolishmag.wordpress.com/2014/01/12/the-three-tremors-halford-dickinson-tate/)
I remember I was excited when I first heard about it, but now I'm not so sure if it would have been good, and not just because of Tate's current state of mind and voice. More often than not these supergroups can't live up to the expectations.
I thought this project was around the year 2000 mark?
I'll assume it was around 2000 as they did this together that year :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me549HoI6gk

It's sounding more like an Avantasia reunion. Three great vocalists, but what I want from outfits like FreeFall, Ayreon, Avantasia, Epysode etc... is new voices, not just recycle the ones that have already been used.
I don't mind at all having a lot of the previous vocalists back again, especially considering the really lackluster vocals on TMOT.

Does not compute. :|
I agree, that Lande, Kiske, and Catley are staples on the mic of Avantasia, love all of their contributions, and think they're fantastic. I just don't get what's with the slow roll of announcing them one at a time if it's just the same as before. I'd be more intrigued (and would continue to be) if each announcement was something new.
What's next, announcing Amanda?

TMOT was just kinda milquetoast vocally. Tobi was good, as usual, but really no other standouts. I couldn't even distinguish between most of the singers. :lol
Ronnie Atkins, JLT, Biff Byford, Eric Martin, Catley and Kiske... you had trouble distinguihing between these voices? No kidding!

I would say no to Ronnie Atkins, he was my least favorite.
Oh, TMOT was awesome too.Yes it was. One of my favorite albums this decade.

I liked it better than Angel of Babylon, but still put it behind Scarecrow and Wicked Symphony.
And I know Kade will go with TMO.
Not a bad album in the bunch though.

If Avantasia went out an toured, I would prefer to see the old crew. But since that isn't happening and one-off shows =/= tour, I'd like to see some new voices brought in.
But IIRC, one of the things people have complained about the last Ayreon album was the singers. I can see Tobias' point of view. You have Marshawn Lynch, just run the damn ball for the TD.
DEE SNIDER OF TWISTED SISTER JOINS AVANTASIA!
'We're Not Gonna Take It', 'I Wanna Rock', 'The Kids Are Back'... There's hardly any Rock fan around the globe who isn't familiar with the big hits of Rock icons TWISTED SISTER, whose frontman Dee Snider is going to appear on the new AVANTASIA album 'GHOSTLIGHTS' (out on January 29th). Besides Tobias Sammet, vocalists who have been confirmed for the new chapter of the Metal Opera are Geoff Tate (ex-Queensryche, Operation Mindcrime), Jorn Lande, Bob Catley (Magnum) and Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, Unisonic). More singers are going to be announced soon.
Tobias comments: "I've always been a fan of Twisted Sister and Dee Snider in particular. He is entertaining, flamboyant, energetic, loud, tongue in cheek, colourful and mean! When I was young, I remember that he was the kind of character that I wanted to be. A crossing between peacock, jackal and Bugs Bunny. I loved it! On "Ghostlights" Dee is gonna be a ghost, and what a ghost he is. Great performance. And I kindly ask our webmaster to put a link to Twisted Sister's 'We're not gonna take it' because that is the video that says everything about what Rock'n Roll is about in my book! Dee, welcome to the Avantasia family!"

RONNIE ATKINS (PRETTY MAIDS) TO JOIN AVANTASIA
Fans in Europe & Asia have already had the pleasure to see the Danish rocker on stage with the Metal Opera. Now the whole world is going to get their share of Pretty Maids vocal powerhouse Ronnie Atkins. Not only will he appear on AVANTASIA's new album, he will also join the massive all-star line up on stage around the globe during the GHOSTLIGHTS WORLD TOUR 2016. The European tour will start in March, tour dates in other parts of the world tba soon!
Actually, I don't think I can name one musician that sounds like Kiske. Maybe that's because I'm a huge fan of his voice.
(I've also always kinda found Kiskes voice kinda bland and prefer Tate to him these days)
I think (hope)Notepad meant that these days he prefers "classic" Tate over Kiske.
Someone else referred to Kiske as a "generic metal vocalist" the other day and I was waiting for Timbo Slice to swoop in and it never happened. Very disappointed :lol
Ronnie Atkins will be on the new album and on tour again, they've posted it on FB an hour ago:QuoteRONNIE ATKINS (PRETTY MAIDS) TO JOIN AVANTASIA

What I mean is.......exactly what i said. I know its controversial, but its my preference. Ive always felt Kiske's voice was quite bland. And this is coming from a huge Helloween fan. Perhaps I just need to hear him trying something different.
I like the lolly ones covered in sugar.
(I've also always kinda found Kiskes voice kinda bland and prefer Tate to him these days)
THESE DAYS??? WUT?
Notepad, no offense bro, but how anyone with ears can prefer Tate to Kiske "these days" doesn't make any sense to me. If you preferred Tate to Kiske in 1988, then fine. But in 2015?
In their primes, sure their voices were comparable. They had amazing strength in their upper registers and were surprisingly strong in their lower ones. Along with James Labrie (I&W), Tate (O:M) and Kiske (Keepers Pt2) own the Three Best vocal performances I have ever heard.
Apparently the new album will have narration.
Come on now, Tate is not that bad these days. Plus he's much older, keep in mind. I know the FU album he did was godawful and was blasphemy to release under the name Queensryche. But based on what I've heard from his new album The Key, not only do I like his voice, the music itself actually sounds really awesome. There's a reason he's going to be on the next Avantasia.
I actually like Geoff Tates lower tone better.
In his prime, his low tone was indeed outstanding. I cannot believe this is the same guy. Doesn't seem real.
I'll say this about Tobi though, he gets the best out of his guests.
Do you not agree?
How good is Tate's best these days ? ;D
Apparently the new album will have narration.

you mean other than Tate talking his way through his vocals? :lol

Dee Snider, Geoff Tate, Bob Catley, Michael Kiske, Olli Hartmann, Ronnie Atkins and Jorn Lande… and I want to announce another guest for the new album. Please welcome - from Phoenix Arizona - former Lynch Mob singer and current vocalist of US platinum rockers Warrant: Mr. Robert Mason!
This man must have one of the bluesiest, raspiest and cutting voices I‘ve ever heard. I found it really exciting to approach Robert to sing on Avantasia, a bluesy voice doing some Classic European 'Wagnerian Rock' material. What I knew would be an explosive combination has turned out to be way more than I could have hoped for. He did a hell of a job, and I am sure you will love it. Great voice, Mr. Mason!
Apparently the new album will have narration.
you mean other than Tate talking his way through his vocals? :lol
That was what I was getting at. ;D
Don't worry, I got it the first time.
Excellent singer. The first two Lynch Mob albums were great and he did well with the Warrant album from a few years ago.
The less said about the Big Cock album the better... But the vocals were good.

Fucked Up is awesome :lol
And it was Oni Logan on the first Lynch Mob :neverusethis:
But yeah.............great voice and could of been the voice of DT apparently.
MARCO HIETALA (NIGHTWISH) ON NEW AVANTASIA ALBUM
News from Tobias:
"What do Geoff Tate, Dee Snider, Michael Kiske, Robert Mason, Jorn Lande, Bob Catley, Ronnie Atkins, Olli Hartmann and me have in common with Marco Hietala of Nightwish? Yes, we're all good looking, funny and amazingly talented… AND: we'll be on the new Avantasia album Ghostlights - out in January 2016.
About Marco: It was August 1997 and we were in Helsinki to mix the Vain Glory Opera album of Edguy when someone played the band Tarot to me. That great band seemed to be some sort of a legend in Finland (in Germany Tarot were not really known at the time). A few years later a band called Nightwish had appeared on the map and were about to take the European Metal world upside down. Edguy played a festival in England with Saxon and amongst others: Nightwish! I remember even though they had a great female vocalist how much I loved the rendition of Ozzy Osbourne's 'Crazy Train' that they did - if I remember correctly - which was sung by their bass player. You know, a lot of bass players are bass players because they wanna be in a band too; and there's only so much damage you can do to the sound of a band with just a bass. Sometimes they're only in the band because they talk enough to organize things or they have a day job to finance the first demo recordings, nice stage clothes, or sun glasses, but at the end of the day, most of them aren't taken seriously because… well, because they're bass players. smile emoticon And they're alway suspicious... wink emoticon Anyway - I don't need a bass player because I play bass myself (not as good as Marco, but I am the cheaper solution for my own project, ha!). AND Marco is more than a bass player, he is a proper musician! I have no clue why it took so long until I eventually asked Marco Hietala (that bass playing vocalist with the two beards and the voice!!) if he could imagine singing a role on an Avantasia album. Now it is happening! And the results kick ass! You will love it! We're putting together an epic Metal record I believe…
Furthermore Robert Mason (Warrant) can been confirmed to sing on the new album as well. Robert first made himself a name back in the early nineties as the lead singer in Lynch Mob. Robert is an amazing singer coming from what some would call a different musical world, and he contributed something very unique to the Avantasia world. He really gave the songs what they needed! You will hear it!
Now go to www.avantasia.net to see details, sign up for the mailing list (and be the first to learn about other shows and guest musicians), get information on the new album or just get a ticket for the tour of tours, the Metal Opera on the road: first show just sold out! Ha!
Cheerz, Tobi"
NOW WE BE TALKING!!QuoteMARCO HIETALA (NIGHTWISH) ON NEW AVANTASIA ALBUM
I LOVE Marco so this is awesome
Too many chefs in the kitchen.
AVANTASIA Mastermind TOBIAS SAMMET - "I Just Received The Pre-Mix Of The New GEOFF TATE Track; Reminds Me Of His QUEENSRźCHE Rage For Order Era"""Folks, I've just received the pre-mix of the new Avantasia/Geoff Tate track - it's a seven-and-a-half minute-monster, and I AM SPEECHLESS! Geoff has made it a killer; reminds me of his Rage For Order era. I grew up with Queensryche, Geoff influenced a lot of us singer people, and listening to that track I know why. Can't wait to unleash the new album: I have a huge smile on my face!""
I saw that.. Yikes.
THE WORLD TOUR IS TAKING SHAPE!
First European GHOSTLIGHTS shows are about to sell out, while new territories are being confirmed: Recently added - Moscow, Arena - April 6. Russia has always been great for Avantasia, and we can't wait to be back!
Big European announcement tomorrow, we will keep you posted!
Well, maybe Tate is just lazy on his new records so that he can be lazy on stage? Eh, I don't know... In the studio they can do piece by piece and he can try a powerful note 200 times and it would even be fine if just one of them is actually powerful. At the very least I expect a good performance now (though remaining realistic).
Marco, however :metal I have blind faith in that being awesome.
Maybe his performance was tweaked and 'polished' greatly in the mixing stage. Who knows, I don't know what to expect of this lol.
Always pumped for an Avantasia album, but Tate has been pretty 'eh' for the past couple years.
Hey Kade... how's about you change the thread title?
:lol I totally forgot that I made the thread. Should be onto that. I'll change it once Chad sees it first. :lol
Tater's wine is the berry vest money can buy :neverusethis:
So I just checked out some Edguy albums. Turns out they're awesome as fuck.
Why didn't any of you tell me? Really letting me down, bros.

Take note... Lowdz knows his shit.
Some of the lyrics can be cringe-worthy (on all of the above), but overall, top notch stuff.
Yeah, I'm working my way backward. Really digging Rocket Ride the most right now.

SHARON DEN ADEL ON NEW AVANTASIA ALBUM
We've come full circle: Within Temptation's Sharon Den Adel is back! It was spring 2000 when someone played me a song featuring an amazing vocalist called Sharon Den Adel. I had just begun to work on what was to become the first Avantasia album "The Metal Opera". I contacted Sharon who was really cool and after listening to the song "Farewell" she agreed on singing a role on "The Metal Opera". She turned Farewell into a magical tune, and after the vocal session she sent me a letter - which I still have - saying "If you ever need me again you know where to find me!"
Now, 15 years later I took her up on the offer dating back to the year 2000. smile emoticon I had this tune that was just right for Sharon, and she listened, and she liked it, and she agreed! And I am soooo grateful that she is back in Avantasia! You will hear it when 'Ghostlights' hits the stores on January 29! Sharon has such a wonderful distinctive voice, very emotional, beautiful, technical, she is so unique, and I am extremely happy that our paths have crossed once again! Sharon, ik dank u wel! You rock! - Tobi
No , one of the best Edguy songs is Rise of Morning Glory. It's amazing and it's essentially about nothing.
I do ;D
I do ;D
As do I. It's hardly about nothing.
I do, and it might as well be about nothing.
Let's see if he can get Tate to sound good before he attempts Meatloaf :rollin
And Arjen always replied that he was super jealous because Tobias got Alice Cooper for The Scarecrow.

Yeah, that's it, true. I remember that also.

Yeah, the live disc seems like a good addition, the karaoke version probably only for the Tate track.
I am?
Which one are you talking about?
The Metal Opera part I and II ;)
Incidentally, while I'll never deny the huge awesomeness those albums are filled with, while growing up I found my musical tastes changed and steered away from pure power metal, so while I'll always praise songs The Seven Angels, Sign of the Cross, Avantasia and the likes, I find myself more aligned with the more "mature" and eclectic direction Tobi took Avantasia in, so I don't really "miss" the Metal Opera... having a lot of fun should I happen to hear those songs live or otherwise? hell yes, but going back to listen to them instead of the more recent albums? no. Can't remember the last time I spinned from start to finish the Metal Opera, while from time to time I still enjoy immensely the Scarecrow album and its successors.
So, Jorn sings on three tracks, Michael Kiske, Ronnie Atkins and Robert Mason are on two songs each, and other musicians got only one track to sing. Tobias is on all songs of course.
Tate would have been pissed when he found out he was only on one song and Jorn got three. :lol
I'm very happy Ronnie gets an extra track. I'd love to hear Catley a bit more though.
In fact, I'll settle for these three epics: The Scarecrow, Runaway Train and the new one. If we get Saviour on the Clockwork again along with these three, that will be even better.
He's saying he didn't like TMOT much, so I'll take his opinion with a grain of salt.

It's not bad, but definitely low-tier Avantasia.

I thought Tobi mentioned that TMOT was the first in a trilogy. And no, there is no link. ;D
I dont recall in any of the news updates on this album, there being any mention of the story for this album. You would think Tobi would say that if it was the case?
The original is back! EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet has returned to the studio to work on the new chapter of AVANTASIA. The sequel to the successful latest album "The Mystery Of Time" will be called "Ghostlights" and is scheduled to be released in early 2016.
New single MYSTERY OF A BLOOD RED ROSE
Christmas is drawing near, and I got my "Nutcracker suit" on already! If you listen to the TOBIAS SAMMET ROCKSHOW on RadioBob (radiobob.de) on DEC 9th, 21:00 German Time you will get a world-exclusive pre-listening of the new Avantasia tune.
On December 11th it'll be available from iTunes officially.
Mystery Of A Blood Red Rose is a song I originally wrote with Meat Loaf in the back of my mind - but for some reason the collaboration didn't happen, so I did the song myself. The choirs alone took more than 40 hours to arrange and record - for a 4 minute song!!! That pretty much says it all. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing and 'More is more'! Have a great day! - The nutcracker aka Tobi

I don't know, there's this quote:QuoteThe original is back! EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet has returned to the studio to work on the new chapter of AVANTASIA. The sequel to the successful latest album "The Mystery Of Time" will be called "Ghostlights" and is scheduled to be released in early 2016.
The bolded, especially "the sequel" makes me think it's the second part of the story. With the band like Avantasia where every album is a concept one you just don't call something "the sequel" if it's not a continuation of the story unfinished.
This bit from the track by track
"Geoff Tate's vocals are slightly distorted and carry a slightly mysterious touch to the outside."
Made me  but then I realised it's an avantasia album he's ruining and I was >:(
Bat Out Of Hell Part 8!
I seem to remember Kiske is only singing on one song? That's oddly disappointing, considering my distaste towards him.
This song is really great IMO. I'm not a Meatloaf fan but know his hits, but still I don't see the big Meatloaf reference here. There's a section of the verse that's taken from Gamma Ray's Armageddon. Maybe they took that from Meatloaf. :lol
The new album GHOSTLIGHTS will also be available in a super limited special edition including a 68 pages book with dozens of unseen pictures. The edition contains 3 CDs:
DISC 1 - the original CD + bonus track "Wake Up To The Moon" (sung by Michael Kiske, Jorn Lande, Bob Catley, Ronnie Atkins, Robert Mason and Tobias Sammet
DISC 2 - a live CD mainly recorded in 2013 and 2014
DISC 3 - full of instrumental versions.

Yeah, an instrumental version makes no sense to me at all.

Well, whoever complained they never come to NA, I think it may finally happen on this tour.
Ghostlights is Kiske's song 'cause "no one else can sing high like him", classic power metal anthem.

I know I complained and am hoping they do, but that's not confirmation just yet of anything for N.A. America could just as easily be S.A. which they are playing in Brazil.

Yeah, I agree. However, I think I remember Tobi saying they'll play at least few shows in NA this time. I'll try to find the interview when I get home.
Those song descriptions sound good.
He says they're also going to play in Canada.
I would hope the one east coast show is in NYC, that would be amazing.

Not saying it's 100% yet, but my magic 8-ball says that is indeed the likely scenario. ;)

I'm pleasantly surprised that Tate doesn't sound terrible. Kiske is fantastic, as usual. Everything else sounds good enough to pick this up on release day.
I'm looking forward to this far more than I am the new DT album. They both release on the same day and if a situation should Arhys where I have both of them on hand to listen to, I'm putting on Ghostlights first.

Wow, is the new Avantasia out?
I just heard the samples and I was surprised to hear something similar to the Metal Opera and classic Edguy. Didn't expect that.
When is he bringing Avantasia to Australia?
He promised on the Edguy Hellfire Club tour he would be back in Brisbane and I'm still waiting haha

The answer to that is when an AU promoter books the venue's ;D
About Meatloaf: I think Tobi asked him to participate and Meatloaf's management just said no, simple as that.
Despite the shittiest sounding mp3's I've ever heard, the album is pretty good.
Needs a few more listens, but the Tate song (Seduction Of Decay) is my fave song.
The rest has it's moments, the title track is perhaps just a little on the, generic power metal fast songs by the numbers.
Of course Jorn sounds mega as per usual, but the real surprise is the very gothic sounding 'Darconian Love' this would be the strangest Avantasia song yet, but it works.
For those of you old enough to remember this, I wouldn't mind some Draconian Love... :heart
I was thinking the same thing myself, what size venue's could Avantasia potentially play in Australia?
I really think that they would need to be playing decent sized venue's that would warrant and justify them coming here.
The Enmore Theatre here in Sydney capacity is around 2,000 people.
That would be the minimum size venue and Nightwish are playing their on Saturday night and it is not sold out.
I'm still buzzing from the phone interview with Tobi.
Hell of a nice bloke too, it was like talking to an old mate wile having a beer.
I had 16 questions prepared but we barely got through 6, our allotted time went over by almost 10 minutes.
Tobi's final comments were that we'd see him with Edguy downunder again, NOT Avantasia.
We just don't have the market and the cost of bringing the whole show down here would prohibit
any Avantasia tour in the forceable future.
No idea, why would I ask him this :o ?
At a wild guess I think the same would apply to the USA as Australia and all the other small
markets around the world.
If bands are not being booked for Brisbane, then the local promoters don't have any confidence in you Queenslanders ;D
BTW heard from a very good source last night, full Sabaton tour in July.
AVANTASIA LIVE IN USA AND CANADA
Great news - my North American friends: WE'RE COMING BACK! You know, the few memories I have of our last Avantasia show in Canada are a bit blurry. Back then I went from hospital right to the stage as I had some real mean flu. I was so high on whatever medication the doctor gave me to make the show, all I remember are the green little creatures in my dressing room that were calling me names but always disappeared under the sofa whenever I tried to catch them to confront them with their silly behavior… Now, looking at the video I sounded quite a bit awful, ha! But I've been told I was funny and a very happy person that night.
AND I AM HAPPY TO SAY WE'LL BE BACK - IN GREAT SHAPE: Toronto and New York confirmed, West Coast show in the works. Unfortunately Bob won't be able to join us for the dates outside Europe as he will be off on a Magnum tour, but we'll bring Michi Kiske, Jorn Lande, Eric Martin, Ronnie Atkins, Amanda Somerville, Herbie Langhans, Sascha Paeth, Olli Hartmann and ME of course… And Miro. And Andre on bass… And as if that wasn't enough on drums there will be no other than... THE DRUMMER!!! Can't wait to hit the stage! - Tobi
APRIL 13 - CANADA - Toronto, Queen Elizabeth Theater
APRIL 15 - USA - New York, Playstation Theater
I guess it is time to update my 2016 concerts, I will definitely be at the NYC show. Their website says the tickets are on sale already (for NYC not Toronto) but then the site says no tickets available when you click the link. I booked a hotel room already so now it's just securing a ticket. This is one week before DT!

Yeah... I just went to the venue website, and the "Buy Tickets" link goes to Ticketfly, though the page won't open, and a search right at Ticketfly doesn't list the event yet. Too bad it's a mid-week show. Oh well - it'll be worth it fo sho.
Yea I am really excited for this, honestly did not expect to be able to see them. Sucks Bob Catley will not be on the N.A. shows though, I wonder if that means the setlist will be different, I'd rather that then see one of the others sing his parts.
Didn't I already say that?? :P
For Toronto - "General tickets go on sale on Sat. Jan 16, 2016 10:00 AM EST." Ticketfly is the distributor. Pricey too... $61-$88. Though, that's Canadian, so like $40-$55 USD.
I know what I'm doin Sat morning.
I've bought a general admission tickets. Avantasia is one of the few bands I can't imagine myself sitting at their concert at all.

I don't plan on sitting at all, just want a seat. But I'd imagine seeing them anywhere but in the USA it would be a much more crowd involved show, the crowds here in the US seem like they just watch and don't get too crazy so a seat is a good option for this.
This venue is half pit up close and then 6 sections of seats in the back. Im front row center in the seats so I think I will have the best view and I will totally be standing, singing, and head banging. Hope the people behind me plan on standing too.

Yeah, and if not, well, that's unfortunate for them. :lol
If you have front row, how can you sit? I mean I guess if no one else stands, but I cannot imagine that. I always stand for the headliner at a concert.

I had front row for DT in Mesa a few years back - it to was a true concert hall. The stage wasn't even waist high. I stood for most of the show, but so too was the group around me. I don't really want to be "that guy" who is the only one standing. Like I said, I'll judge the vibe of the crowd around me.
I think it's one of the best, if not the best Kiske-fronted power metal track from post Metal Opera material. As much as I liked The Mystery of Time, both Where Clock Hands Freeze and Dweller in a Dream were good, but nothing more. And Wastelands I don't like at all.
This song just clicked with me instantly. Huge improvement over MotBRR in my opinion.
I know this info is out there for me to find, but just trying to get the quick answer: Is there a special edition of this, or only standard?

Not just the pointless 'Karaoke' CD you also get a 48 page book.

I'm not going with a super expensive package. But when I head to the local music shop on Friday, I will see what they have and decide accordingly. Not a "mega-fan" of this band, but I discovered them when TMOT came out and I heard some positive reviews and made a blind purchase, and I really enjoyed that album. I haven't gone back and explored the back catalog yet, but probably will at some point if this album is as good as the last one.

Good lord man, get on the back catalogue. While some of us differ on which era is better (Metal Opera vs Scarecrow Trilogy), no one disputes that it is all A+ material.

I'd give TMOT an A+.
Thanks to Nick and Lalo for dropping in on the discussion just to shit on my comment . Let me clarify...
No one that regularly posts in this thread disputes it's A+ material
OR
No one disputes it's all at least A- material.
Perhaps I was too generous on my grade, or overzealous at who pays attention to this thread. :P :-*

Ai Ai, Chad! You know I love you. :millahhhh :-*
And Savior and Black Orchid are definitely my two favorite songs.
Savior is probably my favorite song by them, just above The Scarecrow. It's a large reason why I find both those albums to be amazing, they both have that awesome epic track.
I like how we all frequenters can agree on something.
Scarecrow and Wicked Symphony are both amazing. Angel of Babylon is slightly less amazing.
The Mystery of Time is ok, with a few really good songs.
The Metal Opera exists.

Right with ya Kade
It's really a shame this album came out today, because I'm all in Astonishing mode right now and can't get around listening this one until after a couple of days. :lolExactly.

The most surprising vocal performance for me is by Herbie Langhans on Draconian Love. Every now and then I listen to Sinbreed and Seventh Avenue, so I was expecting him to unleash his gritty powermetal vocals here, but this is really awesome and insanely catchy. It gives me bit of a "guilty pleasure pop song" vibe in a good way.
First listen now. Loving it so far. Draconian Love is different but I like it. Toby been listening to some Nightingale?
Damn, looks like this has been pushed back a week here in Australia. I was actually looking forward to getting this today more than DT. :lolFirst listen now. Loving it so far. Draconian Love is different but I like it. Toby been listening to some Nightingale?
This excites me.

Full judgment is a long way off, but one listen in this is already clearly more memorable than The Mystery of Time.

I think so as well, even though The Mystery of Time has at least two absolute masterpieces (Spectres and The Great Mystery).
Anyway, while I resisted and didn't hear a single note of The Astonishing, I heard the two previewed songs and the teaser, and now - at least for the first time - I feel weird while the parts of the songs I already knew come up, they feel disjointed from the rest of the song... especially the chorus to Master of the Pendulum which is way happier than the rest of the song. This shows that if you're a fan of the band and you reasonably assume you'll enjoy the record, a full unspoiled listening experience is always best!
that really isn't Geoff Tate singing, is it?
how can he manage to suck on his own material and yet sound amazing on this?

As we all hoped, Tobi got the absolute most out of Tate. His track sounds good - .
Fuck, the release date on JB's site (Australia) is now the 12th. Screw it I'm ordering from Amazon I think.
EDIT: Amazon don't have just the 2cd edition ffs.
Has anyone got the live cd, is it worth it?
Ghostlights is awesome. I'm going to do my damnedest to get to the NYC show now.
My only complaint is that nowhere in the book does it say which singer sung which parts. I know when Jorn Lande is singing, but some of the others I'm not familiar with enough.
or purchase the 1CD version and download the live tracks (I think I will do this, was hoping the digital download of the live album would be available)

um... yeah, I think so. Spotify it and decide for yourself.
I really enjoy the bonus track. It's nothing special, but has kiske and jorn on it and if its got those guys its generally going to be kick ass.
Seems like it should have been the second to last track on the album though given the context of the song and story of ghostlights.

I've listened to this once, and I'm pretty sure it's not going to pass TMOT. I plan on digging deep on it tomorrow.
First impressions.
1. Not enough Kiske
2. Too much Tobi
3. Felix is a good drummer for sure, but Russel Gilbrook's drumming on TMOT was beastly. and sounded so much stronger (not Felix's problem).

I love Ronnie, he has become one of my fav vocalists over the last couple of years.
Everything is 'not enough Kiske' for Tim.
How could you choose

Marco is from Nightwish, and Herbie is from a band called Seventh Avenue which I don't know.
BTW, who are Herbie Langhans and Marco Hietela? I'm not familiar with them.

Marco is the bassist/male vocalist from Nightwish, I love him so much.
I am not familiar at all with Herbie, but he is great on Draconian Love and since he is touring with them, I'm thinking it's likely we get that song live.
Cram, you are all over this, bro. Cool!
I love how Marco's song is titled Master of the Pendulum, and totally has a Nightwish vibe to it. :lol
Saying that, I've been listening to Gloryhammer's latest and it's really quite fresh, but definitely not original.
I go through amazon.com. It's a lot cheaper than amazon uk.
I love how Marco's song is titled Master of the Pendulum, and totally has a Nightwish vibe to it. :lolWhile I'll have to take your word on the Nightwish vibe, your point is well taken. Tobi does an awesome job of putting his guest singers in an excellent position with his song choices. Even Tate, who I did say right away that Tobi would get Tate's best, sounded very good. That's a good song that sounds kind of Ryche-ish at times.
@ Tim... Nightwish fans will get my comment moreso than you (being not-so-experienced), as there are two songs on Nightwish's 2007 album (Dark Passion Play) he pulled the song title from - Master Passion Greed, and Poet and the Pendulum.
I love Sharon's voice, but found Isle of Evermore to be rather underwhelming, especially since I think Tobi generally writes excellent ballads.
I love Sharon's voice, but found Isle of Evermore to be rather underwhelming, especially since I think Tobi generally writes excellent ballads.
Indeed, but lately he's been lacking a bit in that. Sleepwalking and Isle of Evermore are among the weakest songs off the last Avantasia chapter(s), and also Alone in Myself on Edguy's Space Police wasn't that great.
Anyway, he makes up for it with excellent epic songs and power metal anthems so I'll give him a pass on that :D
I like the ballads on TMOT.
I like the ballads on TMOT.
As do I. I have no problems with the Avantasia ballads include Isle of Evermore. It's not great, but it's not bad IMO.
And Lucifer is amazing if you ask me, but that is more of a power ballad.
I really like The Edge.
Still amazes me that The Story Aint Over was a b-side.
My first two listens of this album were kinda meh, but on my third listen, and this album is fucking brilliant. Very long, but really really great. Lucifer is one of the best things Tobi has ever done. It could have been made into a long epic though.
I think Let the Storm is absolutely epic. I liked that one on the first listen, but that's getting better too. Amazing chorus. It's one of my favourites, currently.
There's some pretty typical Avantasia moments on here like Babylon and Unchain the Light, but somehow they are still quite fresh.
I still can't get into Let the Storm Descend Upon You though. Must be my least favourite Avantasia epic so far. I hope it'll click with me soon, but it didn't happen yet.

I fell on the opposite end of the spectrum, that song was an instant click for me.

Same.
I still think TMOT is slightly better, but it was excellent and quite difficult to top in my book.
Taking part in the European Song Contest isn't exactyl tr00 for metal bands
This album rivals the Scarecrow, it's amazing. Album of the year so far for me.
It's very early in the year but wolfking might be right. Ghostlight will at least be a serious contender for album of the year. Although I'm not sure what to make of the new DT yet.
WE'RE FILMING THE SOLD OUT PRAGUE SHOW TONIGHT!
And: Dates in München, Gießen & St. Goarshausen have been added to the tour! Due to public demand we have been confirmed for a few more summer dates, check the flyer below! Langen was great yesterday, sold out! THANK YOU! Prague is sold out as well tonight: 4,000 Czech AVANTASIANS… You are absolutely amazing! We're getting ready for the show. Here's a look into the men's dressing room! wink emoticon Tobi
Just watched the Flying Circus the other night and still really loved it, I'm all over this one too.

The Flying Circus has shit video quality, that is my only problem with it and a reason I hardly watch my blu ray so I would much rather a new one that is well done, as well of course with the new songs.

I actually thought that when I was watching it. I love it it and all but I did question the quality at times. I don't really care but I never noticed it when it was released to be honest.
Do you mean The Flying Opera: Around the World in 20 Days? Just watched/listened to some of that on my flight home last night. Still love it... essential DVD (as I stated in my Top 50).
Sure, video quality is gonna be shyte when compared to BluRay. Just like HD vs SD is shit. Technology improvements and such. Still a fantastic concert.
The setlist from the DVD show is damn massive.

I'd say it's a big compilation of everything they've played on the tour so far. :lol

It's pretty impressive. If you're seeing them live soon, you're definitely in for a treat.

See... I'm the opposite. I like to be 'prepared' for what I'm in store for. Surprises are nice sometimes I guess, but I like to know what I'm in store for.
To each their own.
The Story Aint Over seems to be performed solely by Tobi which is pretty cool.
If at all, The Story ain't Over should be the encore song, you have the catchphrase ready to introduce it... "Well, do you want more? good, 'cause the story ain't over" ;D
I know they're killing themselves each night with 200 minutes of music, but I wish they'd use Spectres as first encore, being an opener and all. Just Lost in Space and then the final song after 3 hours seems a bit unbalanced.
A pity you didn't enjoy The Great Mystery, with Catley it was beyond amazing!!!
Good stuff Ruslan. Unfortunately we will never see them out here - he seems to think he could manage an Edguy gig out here so hopefully that will happen.
5 days until I see them.
Holy Jesus's balls that show was amazing. My throat, ears, and feet still hurt from last night.
Random observations:
Jorn is an absolute fucking beast.
The whole band looked like they were having a ton of fun, despite this being the smallest crowd on this tour so far (or so Tobi said) and thus I assume the smallest crowd they've ever played for - probably about 700-800 if I had to guess.
Why does Ronnie look like he's pinching out a steaming loaf with every stanza he sings?
Amanda... god damn, Amanda. Holy christ she is fucking hot - plus sized or not. She had her parents there, and I could see her little baby off-stage.
Eric... holy shit was I impressed with him. He's dorky, and looks like a wax figure, but damn if he didn't have the 2nd most powerful voice - I could routinely hear his actual voice.
Kiske... what a voice; what range. He puts everything into it.
Sorry - I can't equate Jorn and evil after that Hydra vid :lol
Don't you live near NYC TAC? You should have went.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around how awesome that show was.

I'm 25 miles south of Boston. Leaving the wife and kids to travel for a concert does not work in the TAC house. ;D
I've actually found that Ghostlights didn't end up having a lot of lasting power for me. I don't feel the urge to spin it as a whole, and if I want some modern Avantasia I go either for The Scarecrow or The Mystery of Time. That said, Lucifer and Ghostlights (the song) are still excellent.
What's the general consensus on how Ghostlights ranks in the Avantasia discography??

My personal favorite, but generally I'd say it was very well received, but maybe not the best for most. You could probably read through the last few pages here to read reactions.
I enjoyed The Mystery of Time a lot more.
how awful Ghostlights was
I can see the Christmas thing with it.
I don't get associating Ghostlights and awful though.

Me neither. The only volumes I'm not huge on are the Angel of Babylon and Wicked Symphony. Not played them as much as the others.
Have to say I've never bothered with the stories in any of them. The first album put me off bothering with them
For me, there's a noticeable dip after The Scarecrow with AoB / TWS, then a jump back up TMoT and Ghostlights. Not that those two were terrible, just not as memorable.
I think the AOB/TWS combo being slightly less impressive than the rest is the general overall view, with me also.

Certainly not with me. I think The Mystery of Time is clearly the weak point in the Avantasia catalog.
Tobi just knows how to write a good epic.
A Restless Heart and Obsidian Skies is an awesome closer.
A Restless Heart and Obsidian Skies is an awesome closer.
While a good stand-alone song, it suffers too much from having come after The Story Ain't Over and, well, many closing songs with Bob Catley. If it was the first of its kind I would have liked it more, but it gives me a "been there, done that" feel. Still I like it, though.
I want Tobi to focus more on Edguy. I like Avantasia, bit nowhere near as much as Edguy.. Edguy are in my top.3 bands actually. I actually think they were on the verge of being much bigger but then he put all his effort into Avantasia. Some were saying the next Maiden. Idk about that though, because that requires cracking the North American market. Helloween came much closer to that in the early 90s. But still, Edguy is an awesome metal band and we need more of that.

So they'll swap at least a song for Seduction of Decay, I assume?
I wonder which other songs Tate will inherit, since the "original cast" is almost all there and only Kiske's songs are up for grabs...
I'd love to see these guys live, especially with Jorn singing the likes of The Scarecrow and Lucifer. Hopefully the Wacken show will be shot for TV and we'll get to see that at some stage.
I can see them maybe going safer with the setlist, and staying away from Kiske-heavy tracks like Ghostlights.

However, Tobias said on FB he's busy with Edguy anniversary tour now, and he's also composing new music these days, so we shouldn't hope for a DVD anytime soon.

Geoff Tate appears with Avantasia doing "Seduction of Decay." I have to say, he sounds pretty good. The 2:05-2:11 note sounds like real good late 90s early 2000s Tate. Not super high, but real good. He sounds good overall.
Although, at the 6:20 mark, can someone confirm that its a piped in high note? It seems weird. Tate is singing, and then a high note comes in and it sounds piped in, but then Tate obviously finishes said high note. Can't figure out if that's a little keyboard patching in vocal magic, or if Tate actually hits that note. It doesn't quite sound like him.
But honestly, I thought this was good, and builds on my thoughts from this past spring when I saw him acoustically. Looks like a good show. I would catch it if local. Tobi really puts together a solid band.
Have fun trying to catch them local - Avantasia came to the US last year for the first time ever and only played in New York and LA, I believe, with one other show in Canada. Glenn can't even get them for Progpower since it costs too much. If I'm not mistaken, it took the combination of 3 promotors to get them for the two US shows.
Meh.
However, Tobias said on FB he's busy with Edguy anniversary tour now, and he's also composing new music these days, so we shouldn't hope for a DVD anytime soon.

Yeah it's been taken down. Sorry chaps 🙁
I picked up Momunents and think the selection of tracks is absolutely terrible as I've stated before. Haven't checked the DVD but saying all that, the five new songs are bloody fantastic.

Ahh I'm the opposite. I think the selection of tracks is pretty good overall - could be way better though - but the new tracks disappoint me greatly. Which is your favorite?
Been a fan of Avantasia for many many years. What is everyone's favorite album?
Been a fan of Avantasia for many many years. What is everyone's favorite album?
I only have the last two. The Mystery of Time got really rave reviews, so I bought it as a blind purchase and really enjoyed it. I got Ghostlights when that one came out and was pretty disappointed with it.
I'd have Ghostlights at #1, but probably TMoT at #2. I do agree about it suffering from the lack of Jorn, but I do love most of the songs on there.
At number 3 I'd have The Scarecrow. The title track is one of the best things they've ever done, but for me the rest of the album doesn't quite match up.
The Wicked Symphony and Angel Of Babylon are good, but not great IMO.. There aren't too many standouts on those two albums for me..

That's a shame! What didn't you like about it?
I think that goes to show how far removed from power metal - or Edguy's roots, by and large - Tobias Sammet is these days. He's so much more rock oriented than power metal that I'm very surprised by the lack of Mandrake representation. But that's just my opinion. Maybe he had something else in mind. :) I don't understand the inclusion of the B sides or Eternal Wayfarer (c'mon, man - if you're gonna go with newer epics, choose Behind the Gates to Midnight World! that main riff is HEAVY!). But that's Tobi...
To add to my prior post about Ghostlights: I am listening now just because it was the next up in my playlist and was reminded of one more reason I don't really care for this album. Draconian Love just came out, and it is such a laughably bad song that I can't believe Tobi thought it was a good idea to include it on the album as anything but a joke interlude.

I'll show myself out...

:dunno: Okay, well, I guess all I can say is, okay... I mean, even when I strongly dislike something, I can reasonably step back from it and appreciate that there are aspects that others can find suit their individual tastes. But even allowing for personal opinions, this one is just a headscratcher for me. I just don't find anything in it that I can latch onto and say, "Yeah, somebody with different tastes could absolutely like this." I just don't find anything even slightly redeeming in anything about this song. But, hey, tastes.

I'm pretty much with you Jer. The best thing I can say about Draconian Love is that I can tolerate it, and I don't hit skip every time I listen to the album. Ghostlights is a tale of extremes for me - 1/2 I absolutely love; the rest ranges from tolerable to skipable.
What is Guardians Of The Galaxy and who is Taserface?
Also Tobias is apparently way more talkative when he's speaking in German. Not that I understood anything he was saying. :lol
I'm sure an Edguy show would be a lot of fun. I'd love to see either them or Avantasia, but I don't think either of them have been to Ireland yet.

Well, they were always alternated, an Edguy cycle, and then an Avantasia cycle. But now supposedly a greatest hits with only five new songs and a short tour count as an Edguy cycle.
He also said he won't be on stage this year, so don't expect the album to be out anytime soon.

I suppose I'm irrationally salty because it was initially "Avantasia isn't coming back!" then they came back. Then it was "Avantasia is just a side gig!" until Tobi started being more prolific with it than Edguy. Now it's, like you said, just a greatest hits with a few new songs, which if you don't count that as a 'studio' release then we're going 4 years now without a new album. Avantasia's had 4 albums (and apparently a 5th in the works) since 2010... Edguy has had 2. Grumble grumble, rabble rabble, I'm just grumpy.
Id be upset too if I liked Ed Guy more than Avantasia, but I don't so this makes me super happy.
The Mystery of Time is one of their best albums
Bah. My opinions on Tobias Sammet and Kamelot are clearly in the minority here :lol

I think I like Ghostlights and TMOT equally, both are really good. My favorite is still The Scarecrow, but the fact that it was my introduction to Avantasia may play a part in rating it higher than the rest.

There is so much wrong with this statement.
Found it!! ;D
So we'll go probably 6 years without an Edguy album. Great.
Of course I'll never get to see Avantasia live... :(

Don't be greedy, you got 5 brand new songs on a deliciously packaged greatest hits!

Never say never. I've got to imagine they will expand even further into NA this time around. Still maybe not to you, but if they keep growing, eventually. (although I have no idea where you are, so maybe alaska then nvmd)

Couple hours south of Chicago :)

Five bad songs on yet another compilation. No thanks
Looking forward to the details on the album!

Yea, very curious who the guests will be.
I've kind of had my fill of Bob Catley though if I'm being honest.
I forgot about Tate. His song is one of my favorites too.
Tate was passable on Ghostostlights, hopefully one song again is enough.
Yo, hold up, Seduction of Decay is one of the best songs on Ghostlights.

Okay jingles, gotta know your fave GL songs now

Nice. That's me too, except replace RHOS with Seduction. Pendulum is close behind.

Seduction Of Decay is one of the better songs imo and Tate was solid. But to be content with a solid performance by one of the leading metal singers of the past is actually kinda sad.

I am listening to TMOT, and it feels weird listening to it in the midst of summer and 100 degree weather. I so associate this album with winter.

Same. I often associate albums with weather and seasons, but this is the only Avantasia album that screams 'winter' to me. Scarecrow makes me think of summer, but none of the others have associations like that for me.
One of the funniest and most soulful singers I have ever shared the stage with. Mr Big’s Eric Martin - will be on the MOONGLOW ALBUM!
After Kreator’s Mille Petrozza, Geoff Tate, Magnum’s Bob Catley, Candice Night and the striking viking Jornus Brutus Landus the next addition to the MOONGLOW album line up (album out February 1st).
I love the idea of having Mille Petrozza. The rest are all fine by me!
Pretty sure Candice will be featured on some redundant ballad though. Last tune with Sharon den Adel was not impressive at all.
I'm expecting Mille to be on a song that's something like a cross between The Final Sacrifice and Invoke the Machine... it'll definitely be interesting.
Not-very-controversial opinion: Black Orchid and Savoir in the Clockwork are two of Avantasia's best songs, and if there were a 10 foot tall :metal emoticon, I would post it right now.

I think bosk and Evermind are right that TMOT feels less formulaic, but I'm with Shadow in liking Ghostlights better because I believe the songwriting is, on the whole, stronger.

AAAAAND after Vain Glory Opera, Hansi Kursch teams up again with Tobi!!! he's gonna star on Moonglow! :metal
Who?
Who?
That's great!
I wonder which guests would end up on one track only and which will be singing throughout the album. What I hope to hear on Moonglow is more interaction between the guests and fewer songs with "Tobi sings the first verse, guest singer sings the second verse, they both sing on the chorus" formula. Not sure this will happen except for the longer track (tracks?), but I'm pretty sure there will be enough stuff to like anyway.

TRACKLIST AND ALBUM COVER OF NEW ALBUM MOONGLOW REVEALED!
Here is the official press release of The record label:
The wait is finally over! Tobias Sammet is pleased to announce the release of the upcoming AVANTASIA masterpiece »Moonglow« on February 1, 2019 through Nuclear Blast. Comprising 11 tracks, the new opus once again features several guest vocalists. This time round, Tobias worked not only with well-known faces such as Ronnie Atkins, Jřrn Lande, Eric Martin, Geoff Tate, Michael Kiske or Bob Catley but also with new singers like Candice Night, Hansi Kürsch as well as Mille Petrozza who help to vitalize the new AVANTASIA record. Its cover artwork was created by Alexander Jansson.
Comments Tobias Sammet, "It's alive! After more than two years of hard work - and what felt like 71 overnight shifts back to back recently - we're ready to unleash »Moonglow« upon the universe. I believe it's the most adorned and detailed album we've ever produced. Not over ambitious, but there is a lot of love for detail in there. AVANTASIA is the ultimate playground for a musician's wildest fantasies to come true: Celtic elements, world music elements, big choirs, atmopsheric stuff, amazing guest vocal performances and of course all that wrapped up in what I consider to be the typical AVANTASIA sound. Someone in the music business just told me that the embellished nature of the sound makes it hard to market it, it doesn't fit in the contemporary musical landscape and "if you take a look around, no one really sounds like that." - EXACTLY! THANK YOU! I can't wait to release »Moonglow«, take my friends of the AVANTASIA family and hit the road for the big »Moonglow World Tour«."
»Moonglow« - Track Listing:
01. Ghost In The Moon
02. Book Of Shallows
03. Moonglow
04. The Raven Child
05. Starlight
06. Invincible
07. Alchemy
08. The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
09. Lavender
10. Requiem For A Dream
11. Maniac
Bonus Track
12. Heart
Diggin' the artwork!
Hope the album is everything Tobi is drumming it up to be..
Cool artwork indeed! My favourite cover artwork of Avantasia is Mystery of Time. But I like this one a lot too.
Too bad Avantasia seems to have no love for the Netherlands (not enough fans here?), would love to catch them on tour but I don't think I will travel to see them.
The cover looks great. It's aRelease DayPREORDER purchase.
In my LIMITED experience with Avantasia/Tobi, he seems to ALWAYS plug his latest work as the best yet and nothing less than a gift to all humanity. :lol And that's fine. I find him to be a bit cocky in that regard, but not in a way that is offputting--more just being confident in his work and being a good salesman. And the thing I have found in listening to his work is that, even if it doesn't fit my tastes and I don't like it, it is almost all undeniably well-crafted. Based on his track record, I am confident this will be no exception.
K-Lox, I kind of disagree. Frankly, I was never a huge Tobi fan, vocally. It really held me back on Edguy and consequently, I didn't get into Avantasia until late in the game. But I feel like he's really improved. I mean he goes almost toe to toe with Kiske on the Ghostlights title track.
What? the last track is a cover? quite weird. I'm stoked for the rest of the song and the unpredictable use of the singers :metal
I thought it was one of the lamest things I've ever heard. :lol

I saw Tobi posting on FB there will be no Netherlands shows because one of the German shows (or was it Belgium?) is very close to Netherlands and his promoters don't think there's a profit to play Netherlands because of that. He recommended you guys to travel to that German show (I don't remember which one and I suck at geography).
The artwork is fantastic! I'm going for the artbook/boxset if they will have it on pre-orders.
https://bravewords.com/news/bravewords-exclusive-avantasia-new-album-the-most-diverse-avantasia-record-since-the-scarecrow
BraveWords scribe Carl Begai offers some insight on Moonglow:
"Simply put, Moonglow is the most diverse Avantasia record since The Scarecrow (released in 2008). The ebb and flow of the album is captivating in that you have no idea where the songs are going to go. In fact, the only predictable moment is 'Requiem For A Dream', which is Tobi's expected high- speed Helloween fanboy entry trading vocals with Michael Kiske (who does what he does best at a level nobody can touch). Other than that... the way Sammet and Paeth shaped the songs using Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Candice Night (Blackmore's Night), Mille Petrozza (Kreator) and Geoff Tate (ex-Queensryche) is pure ear candy and not what you're expecting of the singers. For example.... no, Ms. Night does not go Celtic or sappy ballad on Moonglow. And Tate... he should put Operation: Mindcrime on ice and join Avantasia full time, as the material lets his voice shine. He hasn't sounded this good in 20 years. No small wonder he appears on three tracks on Moonglow.
Lead track 'Ghost In The Moon' is Avantasia's gradiose Meatloaf-esque moment, clocking in around 10 minutes, in contrast to the crushing metal of 'Book Of Shallows' featuring Sammet, Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids), Kürsch, Petrozza and Jorn Lande. 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' is an equally rousing metal assault, while 'Invincible' and 'Alchemy' feature two sides of Tate back-to-back. Bets are on 'The Raven Child' becoming THE fan favourite on the record, which is Avantasia rock opera brilliance coupled with a Savatage-esque stomp that goes for miles. It doesn't feel like 11 minutes. As for the cover of 'Maniac'... yeah, well, to each his own."
I didn't much care for "Seduction of Decay" on Ghostlights, but it was Tate's best vocal performance since the Promised Land days.
He just needs to surround himself with great songwriters and producers like Tobi, and abandon the Operation Mindcrime nonsense. I'm looking forward on what he brings to the table on Moonglow.
It says there's only one predictable moment and that's where I know this review is another that overhypes an upcoming Avantasia album. I can call half a dozen elements I'm 100% positive will be here.
More shows in other territories tba next week!
Two Australian dates confirmed for May next year, Sydney and Melbourne.
But I got a first row balcony ticket for the Worcester MA concert.
But I got a first row balcony ticket for the Worcester MA concert.
Ooh..I didn't know they were coming. Do we know who is touring in the band? The musicians? The vocalists? KISKE???
Wow that would suck if he didn't do it, but I don't see any Helloween tour dates for 2019
"The Raven Child" is... definitely a song. Just kinda chewing on it at the moment, not sure what I think yet.

Is that good or bad? :lol
Found it on youtube, maybe a leak? Listening now.
I wonder if Hansi is touring with them.
They are coming to Australia in May but not in my state. I really need to do something to go and see them I think. I'll wait for the official release of the song instead of waiting for a radio rip.

You know what, this would be something I would love to do at some stage, get on a plane and see a show with you guys or go to a DTF meetup. Maybe do a tour and see all you lads and go to a show. I can definitely afford it, it's not impossible.
My family has been bugging me to go to Hawaii. I told them if we go to there, then we're going all the way to Australia to see my two DTF buds.

Do it!! That would be epic, although for coming across the globe for a show, I'd probably just recommend going to Progpower USA to get more bands out of it. Unless you'd have bigger plans with traveling around the US on such a trip.
Definitely a cool trip maybe not worth quitting your job over but something to consider doing if possible. Would love to meet more DTF folk, including TAC if you make it to the Worcester show.
Like the Metal Operas were concept albums and pretty corny admittedly but at least the lyrics kind of made sense in the context of a real story with actual characters. Most of the lyrics between The Scarecrow and this could be swapped and the songs would thematically remain every bit as enigmatic and meandering. (Don't get me wrong though, I enjoy it, it's silly fun, the last couple minutes with Jorn are like The Scarecrow but maybe not as good as that particularly awesome passage)
The story in The Scarecrow actually made sense, but I lost the plot in the next two albums. The Mystery of Time made almost no sense at all, and while Tobias said that Ghostlights was a TMOT continuation, to this day I honestly can't say it's a concept album at all. No idea what's going on there.

Agreed.
"word salad fiesta" :rollin You're spot on, but I kinda like his word jumbles.
I will bring uncertainty on a silver plate
Like a mantle piece
I will wipe out darkness
Love it!
Digging through the Facebook posts on the Avantasia website.... It seems the belief is that Kiske is NOT part of this tour.
There is some unofficial version on YouTube but I'm not listening to that.
10 seconds in, I knew I was going to love this song. :lol The soft parts are really nice. But I also love when it really kicks in like just before the 2:00 mark. All in all, first impression is very positive.
I know Katt and I have very different takes on Avantasia, but for me, TMOT is where it is at for this band, and this song captures a lot of what I liked about that album.

As I said earlier, I know pretty much all of TMOT lyrics by heart. They don't make sense, but it's a lot of fun to sing along of them. :lol
Swinging blade of a lowering perpendicular is probably the most hilarious one.
I've been fighting for my soul and sometimes it takes a toll
Hope one day you'll understand what it means to hold in hand
What we call a fantasy, but it's nothing but a key
To the world that now you're in that we call a wicked dream
Welcome to the aftermath of the incidents that made the towers fall... I can see and feel and know that I can't comprehend... etc
Not on Spotify for me yet, and not on the streaming platform I use. There is some unofficial version on YouTube but I'm not listening to that.

I have no idea what it means, but I have always thought that lyric was awesome.
I mean, its meaning is comedically incomprehensible. But it just rolls off the tongue in kind of a fun way. And I have always found it kind of thought provoking, even though trying to figure out what it means ultimately just leads to me shrugging my shoulders and moving on. :lol
Is it bad of me that I love this band so much, yet I've never followed any of the stories? Anyone else in the same boat. I love listening to them but I just don't have the energy to read along and followed the story for each album.

That is something I would've done back when I was in school. Maybe a little :hat to help..
Listening to The Raven Child now. This song needs Bruce Dickinson. I like it!

Moonglow is a new story, the previous one ended with Ghostlights.
What I gathered from the previous storylines...
THE WICKED TRILOGY:
A tormented and disturbed composer wants to create music. He falls in love, he gets dumped, he directs his energies into creating a symphony that will show the world (and the girl) how awesome he is, then says "screw it" and symbolically tells the girl to piss off, and then gets... ehr... lost in space, I assume metaphorically.
He dives deep into addiction (chops his breafkast on a mirror so to speak), refuses the hollow fame and glory, and eventually ends up in a padded cell in an asylum. Maybe one day he will find true love however. Maybe. Dunno.
THE MYSTERY OF TIME SAGA:
The protagonist, Aaron-something (can't remember now), is a young alchemist in a fanstastic version of the 1800's that stumbles upon a conspiracy about a secret organization that.... mh... controls time? steampunk sheaningans ensue and, in the second act, some ghostlights appear. Dunno. There's also the devil in there somewhere. Eventually we meet the master of the pendulum, the villain that... mh... does stuff? it all ends somehow with obsidian skies. Really, I can't make more of this.
Sometimes it's better not to know what it's all about than to understand everything and realize the story isn't really that good. ;) :D
The story never seemed to be important to the music so I never really followed.
Excellent song. Guaranteed day-1 insta-purchase.

I like it way way more than Let the Storm Descend Upon You. Amazing!

Wow :o if this is true, we're in for an absolute real treat!
Metal Opera detractors? I thought the fanbase consensus was that the Metal Opera albums are the best thing ever, the true Keeper III, and albums that Tobi should write over and over and over and over again, with The Scarecrow being an abomination that dared to have poppish songs on the album rather than more dungeons and dragons.
I'm not really aware of any "cult of Tobi." But maybe it's just because I'm more of a casual fan (this being only my third release cycle with them, and me not liking the last one that much). I just know I like the song. It doesn't jump out at me as being something I would consider their "best." But it checks all the boxes for what made me initially like the band to begin with.

But yeah, incredible song! Better than the epic on "Ghostlights" for sure.
In some alternate universe I can imagine Bruce Dickinson doing guest vocals on an Avantasia album, trading parts with Jorn Lande and it’s one of the best things ever. :)
Savior In The Clockwork was my track of the year.
Would anyone mind if I post my thoughts on each album and song leading up to the release of Moonglow? I've had a big Avantasia itch the last week or so and it's been a while since I went through every album (probably years since I listened to Babylon or Mystery from start to finish). I'll be fair to Mystery too :) :) Could make for some fun discussion looking back on all the guests and such over the years.

I haven't really listened to a good chunk of the Avantasia discography all that much, so I will definitely read and listen along. I have long been planning to do a proper listen-through of this artist. I know all albums, but I kind of sticked with my favourites (mainly Wicked Symphony and recently Ghostlights) and never returned to the other ones, save for the songs I really loved.

To this day I have a hard time remembering some of them like Rob Rock and Oliver Hartmann, and sometimes mix them up
another thing Tobi can lay claim to: he pretty much singlehandedly brought Michael Kiske back into metal by nagging him until Kiske agreed to appear on the album
And Kiske comes out swinging. I especially love his singing at the end of Farewell.

Incredible. The single greatest voice these ears have ever heard.
It's dead on balls accurate.
Henjo Richter on both these Metal Opera albums is amazing, SOOOO much better than Sascha's wankery. Well constructed, melodic guitar solos with lots of little melodies and lines running through.
Will listen to this again as it's still my fav Avantasia record.

I totally agree with this. I'm not sure if there's a term for it but the breakdown in Scales of Justice is an example of Sascha's playing that I do not like at all. I also think the guitars simply sound better on The Metal Opera than they do later on - sharper, more aggressive, I think? I love songs like Ghostlights but the lead guitar doesn't sound powerful enough.

Oh man, don't get me started on that.
No, yeah, I agree completely.
Discographies are probably my favorite part of the GMD thread, but this one might not be for me. I'm halfway through The Metal Opera, pt. I and I'm just not... well, I'll stick with it.
I'll listen to the next installment and go from there.
I'm hanging in there mang, I really am. In fairness I'm finding some enjoyment from it in a few places...but, those choruses: they sound so much like Manowar covers look. That's not flattery.
Power metal just may not be for me. :)

Finished. Yeah, no.
Power metal drumbing not a spelling error is too big of a hurdle for me to clear. Audio equivalent of macho poofs prancing in budgie smugglers just isn't my bag.
I better stay out.
I'd still say come back for The Scarecrow and maybe try it out. But that could be just my Avantasia fanboy side speaking.

I agree, there's songs I really enjoy on the Metal Opera albums but I'd rank these albums low compared to what came after. If The Scarecrow isn't your cup of tea either then I'd say it's safe you won't like them. I'm putting on Pt1 now, haven't listened to the whole thing in awhile. I find the production really doesn't help the album.

I have always been a bit the same - I like power metal bands when they slow it down. As an example, I have always been a big fan of Stratovarius but (early days at least) largely just the 2-4 tracks per album where they ditch the drumathon style.

This baffles me because the double bass Jorg Michael drumming is a massive part of why I like that speedy Strato style power metal, and Strato in general! :lol
Are there two versions on the copy you're playing?
The Metal Opera Pt. 1 is a really strong record. But if you're not into power metal it's probably hard to digest.
EDIT: Wait, why are there two songs called "Avantasia?" ???
Listened again and enjoyed it. I do think it suffers not just from the production but maybe the often used power metal drumming, as in the tempos are mostly fairly fast and not as much variety in the music as they would show in the future. I do like a lot of the songs though, some really good catchy power metal here. The song Avantasia is a blast, works so much better live though. I think it's a good album for sure, just hard to compete with some of the greatness that came later.
Anyway, finished it. Not bad. Power metal is kind of hit and miss for me. To adopt an expression I've heard a few times from some of the Lost in Vegas reaction videos: I can definitely appreciate what I am hearing here, and there are definitely things I like, but I can't say it will make my play list. So, I guess, overall, it is a "miss." But it is a close miss, and could end up being more of a hit after a few more listens. It has all the typical power metal tropes that are simultaneously good, but also make a lot of the genre a turnoff. But that said, they do power metal better than most, even on this album. Glad I listened. I will revisit it again.
Podaar, you’re not alone. I struggle with the full on power metal style of early Avantasia, much the same as I’ve tried listening to Rhapsody, Stratovarious and none of it has clicked with me. I think pure power metal isn’t for me.
As suggested above, start with The Scarecrow and see how you get on. The more modern style from that album on is what got me into them properly.
I really love the first album but it was my first Avantasia album. I have a hard time with most power metal as the major key, church hymn sound of it puts me off, with the relentless (in a bad way) boring drums.
This justdid It right.
The story is complete toss though. Best not to pay any attention to it.
What's the deal with the promoter for American shows though? I saw people talking about how he's an asshole on Facebook.
Not as big on this one as I'm on the first. The Seven Angels is great, two Catley songs are very good, The Final Sacrifice is kickass, but then there are songs like Memory or Neverland which are just kind of boring I guess.
...escaping into the world of Moonglow, into the world of a misfit homunculus who fails to find his place and sets off on a journey into his own imagination to escape from expectations he is bound to fail.
BTW, for those "interested" in the storylines of Avantasia, he's Tobi posting on FB about it:Quote...escaping into the world of Moonglow, into the world of a misfit homunculus who fails to find his place and sets off on a journey into his own imagination to escape from expectations he is bound to fail.
Anyway, be prepared for another wacky undeciphrable story in true Avantasia style :D

Not really a fan of the Metal Opera as a whole, but Memory is one I like, and I always enjoy any part David DeFeis sings. I've never cared for his main band though, which is a shame.
You once again have a great line-up on this new album. Was there anybody you tried to get, but it didn’t happen for a reason or another?
Tobias Sammet: Yes. Of course. The same vocalist that I always try to get that I never get.
Rob Halford?
Due to unholy work hours and significant health issues of a family member, I haven't had the time to really join the discussion of the first two Avantasia albums, but I am listening to the first two extensively now during a four hour travel. Will post my thoughts later on.
I wasn't a fan at this time, but what was the point of this release? I've heard all the songs (the versions from this too) and really enjoy them all, the covers are really cool and show off a different side of Avantasia and the original songs are all awesome but mostly on an album which I guess is what I don't understand looking back on it. Either way, I agree AAD and PL are some of Avantasia's best songs.

It was mostly just to hold fans over till the official comeback of Avantasia. Tobi said there wouldn't be more Avantasia, and years later he announced the return. So he released two mini EPs. Lost in Space part 1 followed by part 2, and both were later released as a full package. It was nice to hear AAD and PL because those songs really got everyone psyched for the next album.
6. Ride the Sky (Lucifer's Friend cover)
I really wish Tobi brought him back for Death Is Just A Feeling, instead of Jon Oliva puking all over himself trying to sound like Alice Cooper.
That's the best description of Death Is Just A Feeling I've ever seen :lol
2007 kicked off strong with this album. This was the first full Avantasia album release I had the chance to look forward to (excluding the Lost In Space EPs), and as a teen really at the height of his power metal craze, this was an odd album to listen to, and I've been all over the map on how I feel about this over the years.
Pretty pointless if you ask me, but for completists and fan of those old songs that can be heard in a different way (for example Tobi sings entirely this version of Where Clock Hands Freeze), it could be interesting.
I don't think Tate is gonna get all of Kiske's songs however. Reach Out for the Light is a classic and therefore I assume will be played, but I think the hardest Kiske songs, like Ghostlghts, won't be played.
Tate is gonna get his own songs and maybe some of the oldies like Dying for an Angel, even though Eric Martin currently sings it and he's there...
Speaking of The Flying Opera, I love Kai Hansen in Alice's spot.
NEW YEAR, NEW ADVENTURES, BIG CHANGES! I have decided to step out of Avantasia and thus will not be on the next tour. Since expanding my family, I've had to step back a bit and re-evaluate priorities. I'm happy to say that I'll have more time and energy for my solo work & other projects.🤘 I'll certainly miss my fellow Avantasians and miss seeing many of you this spring!

fwiw .............a local reviewer I know who's had Moonglow for a while reckons Tate shines and puts in his best performance since Promised Land. That might not be saying much but it was conveyed quite enthusiastically.

He was okay on the last album so if his voice has improved this could be accurate. Good to hear at least that he's holding his own it seems with the rest of the singers.
Can't stand Runaway Train.

Not surprising to me. He sounded great on Ghostlights, and seems to really have a passion for the art rock/metal opera vibe Tobi does with Avantasia. So it comes out in his performance. Plus, Tobi is writing the melodies, and probably guided Tate to what he wanted. Chris did that with Geoff too, and obviously, it got the best out of Tate. So the fact he's delivering with Tobi comes as no surprise to me. He's paying Tate to appear on the album, and directing what Geoff does. That helps.
Journey to Arcadia is quite great but doesn't live up as epic closer of a trilogy of albums... still it's quite good and it was probably the template for the future "Bob Catley closing Avantasia songs".
EDIT: title track for Moonglow released. I'll let you judge for yourself... meh. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vZGQ1LsdCUM

@ Tim... in your next roulette, I dare you to do a "Jorn" round.
Hold up dawgs. Y'all think Spectres is better than Stargazers??
Wait what? I thought we were comparing epics, not openers.
Also Stargazers kicks ass. My epics ranking is:
The Scarecrow > Savior in the Clockwork > The Seven Angels > (The Raven Child is probably there) > Stargazers > The Wicked Symphony > The Tower > Let the Storm Descend Upon You
Edit: new song is pretty good btw, nothing spectacular, but pretty refreshing to hear Candice sing like this. I like it.
I'm looking forward to checking out the song later or maybe tonight

And for the lyrics, I don't really care and found Tobi's lyrics non-comprehending right from the start. What was the story of the metal operas about? But mostly they fit the melody and mood of the songs and are great to sing along to. I'm content with that.
Evermind, you're killing me here. I'm trying so hard to find common ground on this one but it's cracking beneath my feet :lol Nah, really it's cool to see such a different opinion on this. The decision to take a different approach with the singers is interesting and brave for sure. My biggest issue is with the lyrics honestly. It's as if Tobi has given up on his once poetic lyricism in favor of ambiguous lines that really don't mean anything, and now he favors the use of 'big' words that lack all poetry and romance, such as...
"Welcome to the aftermath of the incidents that made the towers fall"
"We must finalize the giant to level off the void and zeroize the will"
"The tongue of nations brought the line, reason occupied: the God-machine"
"I envision how you lie awake and agonize over ways to bear your day just every night, re-alignment you're in need of so imploringly"
"I can feel and hear and see but I won't comprehend; I see fire that I won't decipher"
"If you don't follow your self- preservation drive"
bruh. WTF happened to the beautiful lyrics he used to write ??? :lol (EDIT: Specifically I mean his work with Edguy. Even the later stuff has more meaningful lyrics in my opinion, but back in the day before he was taking the piss out of power metal, his Edguy lyrics were phenomenal. Savage Poetry, Mandrake, Theater of Salvation, man he was on fire.)
Great album, but I'm in the camp of those who prefer Ghostlights over this one.
This album sucks.
I love this album. When Clock Hands Freeze might be my favorite Kiske track for Avantasia.

I'm gonna pull a TAC....
When Clock Hands Freeze fucking blows. I was just being nice above. That's one of those songs that Kiske must've been thinking 'what the hell am I doing on this tripe?'. It's like great actors being part of awful movies... they know it sucks, but they have a mortgage and/or alimony payments to make.

Where Clock Hands Freeze is another Kiske classic although I do feel it's half-baked at times

Well, yeah, I meant generally. Jorn's parts are especially bad. "Keep on dreaming, keep on screaming, yeeeeeah", "I'm illusion or truth, I'm confusion, yeeeeah". I honestly can't stand those. It's a shame really, because I was really looking forward to the song when it was announced.

It could be one of my fav Avantasia Kiske tracks too. Perfect power metal.
Here's my take on Ghostlights: I treat it as if they released Seduction of Decay is a really cool single, with an hour's worth of bonus tracks that aren't worth listening to.

Y'all like Mystery of Time. You can't rag on Draconian Love when you like Watchmaker's Dream. :lol :heart
Well, even though I don't really like it, it's incredibly fun to sing along to live. Also it's great to see Herbie swtiching from his back vocals role to the actual frontman, and he's pretty damn good at this. I wish he had a better song to sing on.

Love both songs :lol
Draconian love is just like a pop metal song so I can see why people wouldn't like it, add in the low vocals, and a kind of odd (although very catchy IMO) chorus. I can see why people who enjoy metal would laugh at that song, however, I can't deny my love for it. Just too catchy to not enjoy IMO. Also Herbie is fantastic with his low vocals. I wonder if he is going to sing other songs live since he is touring with them, but he may end up just doing the backing vocals.

As far as I remember from the last tour, he only sang this song and did backing vocals on the rest. He probably also sang a few lines on Sign of the Cross, but that's it.
He also did the minimal part of Jorn in Ghostlights, if we want to dot the i's. And I agree he should have an enlarged role in the next tour!
HOLY SHIT.
Tate's vocals are incredible. I never thought he'd sing this well ever again. The songs that he's on blow Seduction of Decay out of the water. Better songs and way better vocals. :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

SERIOUSLY?
Wow. He's doing a show featuring ONLY songs from EP-Mindcrime this weekend in Germany. Its a good thing his voice is apparently in shape. If he's singing that well, I guess it is.
Looking forward to hearing the tunes he did on Moonglow tomorrow.

I don't know how Tobias gets these vocals out of him. One's a ballad with some really good, soulful, strong vocals. Reminds me of his Empire/Promised land/Q2K stuff.
Then a straight-up heavy rocker where Tate really cuts loose on some high notes. Both of those are duets with Tobi. I think they're stronger than the Re-Arrange You one, which was his last attempt at putting one on an album. Then he's part of an ensemble song - it's a really cool sequence of songs on the album.

Tate F****** slays on this album!
Right now Alchemy is my favorite from the album. The album as a whole is a lot to take in, but I like it more than Ghostlights already!
I can't stop listening to Alchemy. WE'RE GOING TO SHOVE IT DOWN THEIR THROOOOOOOOOOOATS!
Didn't find the CD at the chain store shop I bought Ghostlights (and The Astonishing) three years ago, my day is ruined.

It's all on youtube today, by Avantasia's official channel, you can listen and not feel you are robbing the band while you wait to get the CD.
Could be one of the stronger albums this year, easily.
I like the maniac cover but I agree that it's a little out of place, and I prefer the Firewind cover.
Could be one of the stronger albums this year, easily.
That's a pretty low bar, considering we're barely 6 weeks in to the year.
One listen through.
Not great.
I skip all female tracks on Avantasia albums and this is no different.
The Raven Child is easily the best track. I also like Book Of Shallows too.
Seems like Tobi writes the same song for Kiske on each album.
Tate sounds pretty good. I have to listen with headphones. Feels like there's a little JLB style manipulation though.
Maniac? Give me a fucking break. And fuck Firewind too.
Heard it twice so far. It's good, but it's very classic, I'd call it an Avantasia album 100% through and through. Which is both a compliment and a critic, because there really aren't exciting surprises here and even the best track, The Raven Child, owes a lot in its final part to The Scarecrow.
How does he ruin it? It’s easily the best part of the song.

Boo this man. And why skip all the female tracks? Do you just not like female voices?
Only song I'm not feeling is Lavender, and even that is not bad. The Maniac cover is so out of place, but I still enjoyed the hell out of that :lol.
How does he ruin it? It’s easily the best part of the song.
I think I may be a bit harsh because I love the last two so much and with the first single being so good, I thought this would be another top notch album and it's not quite there, but it is solid Avantasia music and I should make sure that comes off in my initial review as well. Hopefully a few more listens and this really sinks in more.
I should also add, I enjoy the cover of Maniac. It's just fun and works for me, although the placement is a bit odd to not be the last track but I guess I simply just don't care.
Tobi said that he wanted to do the cover, when presented by Sasha Paeth with the perfectly reasonable argument of "come on, many people covered that already", he said "who cares, I like the song and I want to do it, we'll have Eric Martin singing so it will become an Avantasia song".
So it's just a case of Tobi being Tobi and wanting to do something just for the hell of it :D
It's not a bonus track but it's not part of the story (not like there's a story anyway imo). It's just there.
I never delete things from my library. Well, at least not tracks from albums. I wouldn't put it on a playlist, but it stays in the archive so to speak.
I even have some stuff I've got for past gf's like Britney Spears. I don't think I'll ever listen but it's like am I really going to delete some music I paid for?
Library =/= hard drive.
Library =/= hard drive.
I always refer to my hard drives as my 'library' since I rip all my music to them. What are you referring to? Are you a dirty iTunes user? :lol
What the fuck are you two? Hipsters? And yes, I use iTunes... it's somewhat convenient when our house has 4 Macbooks, 3 Apple TVs, 4 iPhones, and 4 iPads.
and I still have a 160GB iPod Classic.
and I still have a 160GB iPod Classic.
But I am pretty sure it will be up for top 5 consideration in my album of the year rankings.
They have a female backing vocalist, she'll take up Candice's role and sing Farewell as well (the part originally sung by Within Temptation's singer).
And Hansi will be covered by Ronnie Atkins (my first guess) or Eric Martin (second guess).
In fairness, you were also underwhelmed by El Dorado as I recall. So I have my doubts about your ability to recognize awesomeness.
I'm up to the second last song of my first listen to this album and I have to say, I'm very, very underwhelmed.
Y'all are nuts, this is a high point for Avantasia.
I'd say that up until Alchemy the album does quite great, then it's all been there, done that with no big climax to look forward to.
Y'all are nuts, this is a high point for Avantasia.
But your opinion has mostly been opposite of the majority in this thread so this is just another example :lol

I was an Avantasia fan before it was cool, damn it!! :lol
I'd say it's pretty strong until and including Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and the final four songs are a letdown. Also Starlight was kinda meh on the first listen.

Saw a few U.S. dates, and I'm screwed. They are playing San Jose on May 17. I was all excited, and then realized...shit, I have a ticket to go see The Tea Party (who NEVER tours the states) on the same night in San Francisco. I'm going to the latter. But damn.

And Avantasia's only 2 previous shows in the US is less?
I'm kinda liking Maniac (haven't heard the original), but I'm against covers on albums in general, and it just doesn't really fit on Moonglow.
I've been listening to this and yeah, there are some killer tunes and I like this more than Ghostlights. But there are like three or four forgettable songs (Starlight, Lavender, Requiem, Heart) which bring it down a notch. Still a good effort and should be fun to see some of the new material performed live.
Requiem rules. Most of the time I bag on Sascha but on that song I at least like the guitar melody and those quick little 16th notes he adds in. Requiem for a draaaaaaaaaaym :2metal:

The only reason I know that song at all is because it was referenced in Tommy Boy.
So, saturday I already have a concert, then dayliight savings kick in and we'll sleep one hour less, and then sunday I have a three hours gig. I pity future myself Monday morning :lol
while we all agree, I guess, that it should have never been on the album and definitively it shouldn't be played live

I loved the gig, although I've got to say, three hours of this is almost a bit too much. Then again, it's not like they're playing here every half a year. I'm just glad this didn't take place on a working day.
Avantasia
10 minutes until show time, and look what I just spotted in my dressing room... a segway for ladies?!
:lol
Less than one week to go! Tuesday will be fun. I hope there's some cool merch to buy, 'cause the shirts I've seen aren't doing much for me (I have way too many black band shirts with album art on them, I would really like bands to branch out or at least have one white shirt available - Sonata Arctica's been pretty good about having various color designs). Also really happy that TMOT is getting short changed on this tour, I know it's popular here but I'd be hesitant about even going if a lot of the set was filled with those songs.

Man, as I said, our show had a green all-over print Moonglow T-shirt which is beyond awesome, one of the best T-shirts I own. And I don't mean dark-green like the album cover, I mean it's pretty bright green with one sleeve darker than the other. It's great.
Same. Also I work out and the shirts just don't fit right anymore because they're never in an athletic/tapered fit. Get that huge empty space between my lower back/sides and the shirt itself. Makes me hope there's a flag or something for sale so I can waste my money on that instead :lol
Cut your damn hair, you freak. ;D
TONIGHT!!
Got off work early. Gym time, a couple :hat for the road, and then it's AVANTASIA!!
Ran into an old ex who I don't think I'll ever be over, but thought I'd never ever see or talk to again since she moved to a different state. Apparently her love of the same old bands is there since she flew in for this one. The whole experience shocked/bummed me out so much that I spent half of Let The Storm... in a sad trance, but otherwise, I was going nuts. They only had shirts for sale which was a bummer but I ended up getting a Moonglow art shirt with the tour dates on the back. Yay.
Objectively, how was Tate?
Objectively, how was Tate?
Invincible, strangely, was played after Alchemy, but he was sooooo good. Like listening to the record.
Made it to Worcester for the show tongiht :metal :metal took 90 minutes more than my GPS initially said, terrible traffic through connecticut which made me super annoyed as I didn't have time to stop at one of those, uhm green shops, anyway. It was nice to pull into my hotel parking lots and see all sorts of band tshirts, this lobby might be fun after the show :lol (it's a short walk to the venue so perfect spot for the out of towners to spend the night).
Have fun!! It's actually a great place to see a show.
I actually went on youtube and that video showed up in my feed! :metal
The reason no one was there was because Kiske wasn't there. Just saying. That place was PACKED for Helloween last year.
They obviously thought he was touring. Doesn't surprise me..dumb Midwesterners. :lol

Bit of a major bump for this thread.
I discovered this band a few months ago (yeah a bit slow on the uptake...). 'Mystery of a Blood Red Rose' popped on some channel I was half listening too one evening and instantly demanded my attention. A few minutes later and I was listening to 'Ghostlights' in full - what an album, genuinely awesome. I followed that up with 'Moonglow' - yup nearly as good. After sinking into those albums for a week or so I went backwards to 'Mystery of Time' and erm, I didn't really do it for me, and I didn't bother going any further backwards just continued to enjoy Ghostlights/Moonglow....
Then last week on a whim I hit play on 'The Wicked Symphony' and holy shit it's great and now I've been listening to all three albums in the Scarecrow trilogy and yup this band are awesome. I've got the two Metal Opera albums to try in the future and Mystery of Time needs another chance.
But basically great band.
Go for the Metal Opera! they might look very cheesy, but if you grew up with classic power metal and Helloween, you're gonna looooove them. The first Metal Opera is basically an unofficial Keeper III from another band.
Mystery is a big grower mate. I didn't take to it much at first but now I think it's amazing. Metal Opera 1 is still probably my fav though.
TMOT is, pardon my French, doodoo.
TMOT is, pardon my French, doodoo.
Given what you've heard so far, definitely try Metal Opera Pt. 2.
If any Avantasia album is doodoo (and they aren't) it's probably Angel of Babylon

The Wicked Trilogy is where it's at - even if AoB has a few duds.

Yea, AoB just has a few duds, not a bad album at all but it's not on the level of their top albums just from a consistency perspective. Promised Land is so damn good.
Jorn rules but he kinda just barks out the lines Kiske took and sang with a silky melodic voice.
As the guy who bumped the thread and is experiencing all Avantasia for the first time - I have noticed after a few listens Angel of Babylon is an odd album. The Scarecrow and Wicked musically sound like they belong together - even the cover. Babylon feels different musically, it also feels a bit like a EP worths of quality material topped out with some b-sides (albeit decent enough b-sides). The first 4 songs are good/great and the final two are quality too - the others are quite forgettable though.

Yeah, this is pretty bang on.
Stargazers
I can't stand Sascha as a guitarist. He ruins Stargazers with his endless, meaningless and monotonous wanking. He's the only downside to later day Avantasia. Henjo rips him to shreds.

A man after my own heart :heart
Still, to me, TMOT is the definitive Avantasia album.

I don't think the same, but I have no problem with this statement.

Agreed. Ghostlights for me. TMOT right behind, then Scarecrow.
All I know is that The Metal Opera albums are definitely NOT definitive Avantasia.
C-C-C-C-Combo breaker!

While I do agree that Moonglow is not nearly as good as Ghostlights, but at the bottom of your list Wolf?
Looking back, Ghostlights is a lot more consistently good, but Moonglow still has some gems inside. Like the Geoff Tate song and Piper at the Gates Of Dawn.

I've tried a few times now, but on a whole, it just does nothing for me at all. I was so disappointed by it and I've gone back to it but I find it very underwhelming. I think it doesn't help that the Avantasia sound is getting pretty predictable and samey. Tobi needs a shakeup.
Still salty that every singer who sang on Piper was on the Moonglow tour at the Chicago show but they didn't play it. WTF, I love that song so much :censored

That's nothing compared to having on tour Lande, Kiske and Catley and not playing Runaway Train (which happened, but not at my show :D)
Ghostlights is at the top for me, the debut at the bottom. That one being at the bottom is more of a style thing than quality, I simply enjoy the type of music of later Avantasia albums more.

I tend to think of Moonglow as an album that starts off very strong and then peters out a little bit. Not too badly, but noticeably. The best songs on that album are The Raven Child, Ghost in the Moon and Book of Shallows. But when I actually listen to those later songs, I find myself thinking they're stronger than I remembered.

Ghostlights is near the top for me, but Moonglow is at the very bottom.
As for Edguy I'm pretty sure I've never listened to an Edguy album more than once. It just never did anything for me.

Theater of Salvation :metal
By FAR the best thing Sammet ever did and my favorite power metal album of all time.
what would you recommend as a good place to start with Edguy if I want to get reintroduced to the group?Right here:
Basically the Edguy / Avantasia situation is a bit like the Savatage / Trans Siberian Orchestra one.

My personal favorites from that album are "Wake Up the King" and "The Unbeliever" although the title track is the epic of the album.
That's a great song.
Been ages since I've heard it, but I didn't think the rest of Theater Of Salvation measured up.
I've been listening to The Scarecrow a whole lot in the past week or so, and it's an album that just keeps getting better and better for me with every listen. I want to check out more Avantasia albums because I'm really liking this one, but at the same time, The Scarecrow is just keeping me so occupied that I can't simply go and listen to their other albums.
What are folks' thoughts on Angel of Babylon? I've never gotten around to it because universal consensus says it's a weaker entry, but I'm thinking it might be nice to finish the trilogy. How much weaker do people think it is than the previous two, and would you say it's worth it anyway?

If you think The Scarecrow gets weaker in the second half, wait until you hear Angel of Babylon. :P
As someone who only got into Avantasia in the last year or so I think Angel is the weakest album - in fact in places it feels more like an Edguy album. However it's still worth checking out because it has one Stella track in 'Promised Land' which is worth it alone, one of Tobias best songs period. Besides that the first 4 tracks are all solid too good as is the final track.....but tracks 5 - 9 are all a bit ermmm yeah, not so good.

Yeah, I agree with this. Album starts off good and just kind of loses it. I think it's likely my least favorite as well.
Nice. Looking forward to the new album. Some good stuff on Moonglow but not one of my favourites.

Is it wise for a business to downplay their own product?
Music is a product and you need to sell it. This is how you market things by saying it's the best and hyping the hell out of it.
Also, Musicians have no way of knowing if an album will become their best selling album of all time. There are times when the new album ends up becoming something spectacular where it does become their best of all time. But these take time as well to come to fruition as being considered the best (insert band name) album.

Errr.....Avantasia are not the type of band that will dramatically sell more albums by the creator coming out and saying it's the best thing ever. That's just ridiculous, they aren't some manufactured pop outfit for the masses.

Maybe not sell more, but potentially sell less by not saying it.
I do not care for when artists say their latest is the greatest, but it's hard for me to say they shouldn't say it. I just accept it as promotion/marketing.
Fair enough. I'll live with that. I wouldn't expect artists to not say it but can see where Chad was coming from.
I think he just threw that out as simple thinking aloud type of random thought, not expecting it to get fully analysed. :lol

Pretty good song actually, great chorus. Hopefully this album is better than the last one.
I still hate Sascha's guitar playing though.
Yeah, that's an odd title (thanks for sharing). Not sure how I feel about it. But no release date yet or track listing?
Pretty good song. Lots of energy. I made the mistake of reading along with the lyrics. “Rechannelize”?? Is that even a word? :D
I think I’ve come to terms with the fact that Avantasia lyrics just don’t make very much sense, so I just put them out of my mind and enjoy the music!
Looking forward to the album. I was disappointed with Moonglow, so I’m hoping this will be a return to form.

Well I found that pretty average. If Rolf sang any higher I wouldn’t be able to hear him!
Sore point. I have a Rolf painting that used to be worth serious money - now it’s virtually worthless 🤬🤬🤬🤬
No excuse either - I had my specs on! 😁
Pretty sure The Mystery of Time is the weakest album, has some of the worst lyrics too. IMO of course. Even Angel of Babylon at least has a couple good songs. Moonglow freaking rules. :metal
Mystery of Time to me is like a retread of the Scarecrow Trilogy but with weaker songwriting and worse singers. Ghostlights was much stronger, outside Geoff Tate who sounds bad, and then Moonglow was mostly really good with a few weak songs. Still better than Mystery of Time, though. The only songs I really listen to from that one now are The Watchmaker's Dream (just for Arjen's solo), Sleepwalking, and maybe Black Orchid.
The Mystery Of Time is my all time favorite Avanatsia album, but feel free to shit on it. :lol
Also, re: lyrics, I think the Scarecrow trilogy was also Tobi's strongest stuff. It tells a good story while not descending into extremely literal 'characters speaking to each other' like the Metal Opera. There are still some funny Tobi-isms here and there, like what exactly is a 'funny flower'?, but overall it works really well.
Moonglow isn't bad, but (imo) it is the least-best of the three in that "trilogy".
Moonglow isn't bad, but (imo) it is the least-best of the three in that "trilogy". And yah, SN... Tater is/was terrible, and Tobi made him sound pretty damned good. If you're comparing him to late-80s/early-90s Tate, then you're right and will be disappointed. If you compare Alchemy/Invincible to 2010s Tater, he sounds fantastic here.
I've only heard Operation Mindcrime once and don't remember anything about it,
I think Mindcrime is an album that sounds very 80s metal, so I don't think it should be surprising if people who aren't fans of that sound don't love Mindcrime.
Personally, I like the album, but it's not among my favorites, and I listen to it very rarely.
I listened to it once, but I don't think I even made it all the way through. :lol
Through tracks 1 - 8 Moonglow is fantastic....but those final 3 tracks (4 if you include 'Heart') let it down somewhat, still think it's a mid tier album though. Clearly Babylon is the weakest one - feels like a EP worth of material padded out with B-sides.

Agree with all of this, especially the bolded part!
The Mystery of Time is better than Operation: Mindcrime :neverusethis:

But yeah.....fuck.....it's....errr........one of greatest albums of all time, that's all.
You all are off your meds.
You all are off your meds.
Sorry, I am confused. Are people in this thread trying to say The Mystery of Time is a better album than Operation Mindcrime? If so, then wow! Just wow! One of the greatest albums of all time (and probably my number 1 vocal performance of all time) v an above average power metal album. Sure I love Avantasia but sorry no album from Avantasia can compare against Mindcrime.
I genuinely don't remember anything about it.
That's all cool and I totally respect what you are saying but Mystery of Time and Mindcrime are pretty much from the same genre. Just to clarify my post when I called Mindcrime one of the greatest albums of all time, I did mean in the genre of metal/hard rock music not all of music as I don't think it would be universally accepted to be the case. It isn't like trying to compare The Beatles Revolver album against Mindcrime etc..Where I am coming from is that if you love Avantasia, and I know that you also love Iron Maiden then I have a hard time understanding how you couldn't love Mindcrime.
My situation is probably different to yours, in that I heard Mindcrime pretty much on release day in 1988 and it basically changed my life. I appreciate that you aren't coming at Mindcrime in the same way, however I just feel that Mindcrime has a far superior depth of story, great lyrics, emotional impact, awesome vocals, guitar playing etc that The Mystery of Time doesn't have.
Yeah, that's an odd title (thanks for sharing). Not sure how I feel about it. But no release date yet or track listing?
As far as I can't tell, that is all the info so far.

Tobias Sammet: »From the first song ideas back in 2018 / 2019 to the production, orchestration, keyboards, arrangements, details, I have been personally involved so deeply in every little aspect and detail of this album, that you can’t get an album any more personal or closer to my vision than this one. I had the time, nothing else to do in the past two and a half years, it was a slow movement life with music and my Mysteryhausen studio serving as a portal to another world, full of music and quirky encounters with my muses, that kept me sane and hopeful. I am super proud of the album, some of my best songs, some of my most emotional and extreme vocal performances, some of the strongest guest performances ever. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome and when you’ll hear it, you will know why!«
The album was produced by Tobias with Avantasia guitarist Sascha Paeth, who’s also responsible for the powerful and timeless mix of the album.
Pre-Order is going to start soon, limited editions with goodies and autographs will be available at the offical band merchandise store. We’ll keep you posted!
Just pretend it's called simply "The Moonflower Society", the rest is just a prefix ;D
Not bad. I don't mind the 80's AOR vibes, and Catley still sounding great. Jeez I've heard that chorus melody before though somewhere

Dig it. A lot of passion in that tune. Very epic. Yeah, 80s AOR vibes, but that's okay. Agreed on on the chorus melody.

What Wolf said!
It'll be interesting to hear Floor sing Avantasia.
It's definitely a decent tune.
Also, these are tremendous projects by Tobi.
But I'm as interested in Avantasia mostly because of who the vocalists are.
Bob Catley is fine, but doesn't move the needle for me. Sheepers actually moves the needle backwards, and I could give a fuck about Eric Martin, honestly. I'd be interested in the Kiske tune, but he only has one, and shares another with Jawn.
I'm not familiar with Floor, but I'm curious to hear her, that's for sure.
I thought Tater was on this?..
Yeah, solid lineup.
Two songs for Floor Jensen, which is awesome! Even Ronnie Atkins contributed, even though he is terminally ill. Going to be sad hearing he's song. :-\
It seems this time around for the most part he has settled for a core crew of people he has worked with often. They are all good, so no complaints from me.

I dont want to sound like I'm complaining, but the lack of new guests is a bit upsetting. Floor is a great get so I'm excited for that, but using the same crew just makes me think these guys are just apart of the band at this point. I'm sure it'll be good.

Unfortunately I am not feeling the songs released thus far at all.
Unfortunately I am not feeling the songs released thus far at all.
I find them all good, but they aren't giving me the impression this album is going to be an album of the year contender. None of them feel special to me. Maybe I just need to listen more, but I don't want to wear the singles thin before the album release. So I think I'm just lowing my own expectations a bit.
Sadly, I have to copy and paste my comment. It's another Avantasia song with Michael Kiske, which is good because Avantasia is awesome, but on the other hand I miss the "woah that's why I fell in love with this band!!!" factor. Guess I'll forget about these songs until the album will be out and I can appreciate the entire work of art as a whole.
I'm not the least bit excited about this album. None of the songs are anything special. Neither is this one really, but I've listened to Kiske sing a lot worse and loved it anyway because...it's him.

I hated the last one and this is shaping up more rehashed stuff. I'll check it but not looking forward to it at all.

I actually really liked Moonglow. What made you hate it, compared to the rest...?
BTW, agreed that the singles for the new one so far did very, very little for me.
This YouTube review of the album is in German with subtitles. The review wraps up with, “It's not a bad album. It has a terrific production, the cover and the graphic art are sublime. I like some songs very much, but others not, with other two that I totally dislike (Paper Plane and Arabesque).”

Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Unfortunately, what I think it is for me is that the whole gimmick of the whole concept of Avantasia has run its course.
Maybe a whole new batch of singers would give it a shot in the arm. Oh, and replacing Sascha with Henjo haha.
I have a chat with Tobias this Thursday! Your questions would be highly appreciated guys, except for "when will Edguy get back together?"

To piggy back off of that, I'm sure he won't answer or even if it should be asked, but I'd love to know about the fees that the singers are paid and how that all works.
Like how much does Kiske charge to sing on a song.

As we say in the military that is a 'need to know' and as fans we don't really need to know who gets paid what.
I wouldn't be asking that sort of question as an interviewer nor would I expect an answer from the interviewee.
I don't know how to phrase it nicely, but I'd love to know why he's got himself stuck using the same guest vocalists to do the same style songs each album. But a more neutral question might be how do you decide on your guest singers?

It's a valid thought if you phrase it right. How about;
"Avantasia has become a well oiled machine and seems to be firing on all cylinders with some of the guest vocalists you have almost cementing their roles and place within the band. Have you had any thought on doing an album with all fresh new vocalists under the Avantasia name, or are guys like Kiske, Catley and Tate too much in the blood now of the Avantasia name"
Something like that but maybe not so wordy?

I'd ask him why he doesn't shut the hell up and just let Kiske sing the whole song by himself. ;D

He is a little man, but there is nothing little about his ego. I get it though, each song is his creation so it would probably feel wrong for him not to be part of it.

I gotta be honest, I would greatly prefer the Ayreon rock opera appproach vs having all singers have a guest spot, which is how it feels to me in Avantasia. And have the singers interact more with each other instead of mainly Tobi. There are many songs that I feel would be better if Tobi hadn't sung on them and just let the "guest" do his/her thing.

First listen. This is a pretty paired back album (for Avantasia) most of the songs are fairly straight forward power metal rockers that run under 5 minutes, probably the closest Avantasia have come to making an Edguy album. Misplaced among Angels was the instant standout.
What tracks does Tate and Kiske appear on? I am only in this for Tate and Kiske.
Paper Plane, Arabesque and the Floor track are my favorites.
Thanks Grapp. Wow, Tate is only on one, and Kiske just two?

Yeah but they both kill. :metal
After one listen, the track with Tate is definitely one of my favorites...
Holy shit, the CD is $18 on Amazon. WTF???
For anyone who has the CD, I'd be interested to know who did the guitar solos in each song.
The solo at 7:50 of Arabesque is nice. Sounds like Brian May.

Isn't it just Sascha and Oli Hartmann on guitars?

I have no clue who the musicians are. I didn't get the CD. There are some great solos on this though.
I've had it on at work today, so not paying too close attention, but it may be better than what I initially expected but my expectations kind of were low from the singles. Kill the Pain Away and Arabesque stood out the most initially. Honestly need more listens though to say much more.
