LAPORTE, TX — A stay-home mom was arrested for letting her children ride their scooters in a cul-du-sac in front of their home. Police say Tammy Cooper was endangering the children because her lawn chair wasn’t close enough to where they were playing. She was handcuffed, put in an orange jumpsuit, and thrown in jail for 18 hours. She has already spent $7,000 trying to defend her case. The children were taken to Child Protective Services and interrogated.

So I'm reading this, and I very confused. Can anyone just report someone for child neglect/abuse and get someone arrested without any actual evidence? I'm not an expert on law, so maybe someone can enlighten me?

Curious what kind of "motorized scooters" they're talking about, but still, in general this seems pretty absurd.
-
This is why we can't have nice things.
-
It's Texas, I'm surprised they didn't execute her and the kids.
-
Wait, you mean when my friends and I walked a whole 1/8th of a mile to the local park to play basketball and baseball, we were actually being neglected? Where's my money? Hell, walking one mile to school in 5th grade must be child abuse then *prepares to sue my middle school*
-
woah, poor kids. Obviously I don't know enough about the case to judge much, but on the surface this is just absurd.
-
If it was only that easy to get your mom arrested.

Yeah, these kids can really be hurt by this. I know a family that had something similar happen, one of the kids was really traumatized by the 'interrogation' experience.
I have a hard time thinking this wasn't just a case of a neighbor being annoyed by the kids, though.

That is possibly one of the stupidest things I've read all day.

The first link doesn't have nearly enough information. The second one almost has too much, and leaves even more questions than it answers.
Despite the fact that Fuller alleged she had hit one of the children with her vehicle, no medical response was called for or needed as it was obvious that neither child had been hit by a car or was hurt in any way. Interestingly, Fuller was never confronted about her lie regarding striking the child with the car. Instead, Cooper, the victim of an angry neighbor, was arrested and charged with a crime in a public and embarrassing manner.
The neighbor (Fuller) is the one who called the authorities and claimed that the woman had "abandoned" her children. Her reasoning is that she says she hit one of the kids with her car, and the mom didn't see it or do anything. What the fuck? She says she hit a kid with her car, and they go after the kid's mom? Then when it turns out the neighbor lady is lying about the whole thing, there's no false report charges or anything? But mom stays in jail overnight anyway?
I can see why the mom is suing, and I hope she wins. I also hope the neighbor lady's house burns down.

Though us Texans are proud of our Death Row "Express Lane", this is complete lunacy. I agree that this is just a vindictive neighbor trying to be a bitch.
