So I'm getting a cubicle.
« on: April 23, 2013, 09:23:30 PM »
A month from now I will be getting my own cubicle for the following 12 weeks. I just bought a few items for it and need some other ideas. I've never had a cubicle before and need inspiration. What would you suggest DTF?

A real plant. I've had real plants first in my cubicle for 7 years and in my current office for the past year. I think that livens it up a bit.

Oh and a Swingline stapler.

A lamp with a real incandescent bulb. Yellow light is important. There's something unnatural and unpleasant about sitting under white fluorescent all day. I keep a $10 Target brand torch lamp in my office, just to add some yellow to the mix and it makes it much nicer.

That's the first thing I ordered.

Great suggestion.

And I don't know about anyone else but along with using my smartphone calendar and the calendar on my work computer, I like to have an 'old school' actual paper calendar hanging right where I can see it and reference it quickly.
I rely on my company supplied iPhone for its calendar quite a bit due to it being synced to everything work, but having that 'real' calendar is just as useful to me.

I've been a cubicle rat going on 20 years now.  Posters, my kids' artwork, wall calendars with bands or trains, anything to make it "personal".  Stuff I would've put on my dorm room walls 30 years ago, but which don't have any place on the walls in a family home.

As for on the desk, you've already gotten some great suggestions.  A real plant and a real lamp.  Once again, something to personal it as your space.  Something beyond the company-issue generic office supplies.  I keep a small abacus sitting next to my calculator.  Both were gifts, and it was a while before I realized the symbolic symmetry of having both of them.

I wish I could have a plant - there is no natural light at my cube, so plants don't do well.

Come to think of it, I don't have anything personal at my cubicle/desk/work station. Aside from my coffee mug with my name on it.

Damn, can't believe I forgot about that.  I had one at my last job, but I don't have room for it where I am now.

Also, and probably needless to say, the best tunes you're allowed to have.  I had a small stereo at my last job, but I didn't use the shitty speakers that came with it.  Instead, it fed some nice computer speakers one on each side of the PC, of course.

Most places realize that you spend 1/3 of your life in that little space.  You're allowed to make it liveable.

I have no natural light. I forgot the name of these plants, they are those vine looking things...I'll post a pic later....but I just load them up with those fertilizer sticks once a month.

Good suggestion on the fridge. This is what I have ordered so far. I don't plan on bringing it all in on day one. I'm going to slowly introduce everything so the veterans there don't think I'm the "know it all hotshot who's ready to move in".

I got a 12x18 of this:

Small yet effective.

500 piece Nanoblock. This guy only stands like 7.5 inches tall.

And of course:

I want to find one of those clocks that has the waving arm and it shows the time sort of floating in space... but I have no idea what to search. I know Brookstone used to carry them, but they don't have them on their site.

Both require rooftop compressors and condensate pumps  :hat

It has that cushion on it that keeps your wrist straight. That's what that blue gel pad is also...a cushion....for my elbow. My last job of 7 years I was a Draftsman so I was on the computer literally ALL day. This job, not so much but it's now just what I'm used to.

I have a tower fan as well....that 2nd pic you could spot it. Definitely couldn't go without the fan.

Why wouldn't you? Desks make shitty surfaces, both for the mouse and for your hand.

I find that unless I'm on just straight wood, I'd prefer an optical mouse without a mouse pad any day. A new optical mouse on a granite surface is heaven.
