Pretty sure in a nutshell it's about the breakup of Tom and his wife.

Wasn't that Hymes through The Atlantic?

That's what I thought too, but now with what Wardy said I was doubting.

But yeah, also thought it was a trilogy ending with Atlantic.

Yep the Atlantic concluded that trilogy and IIRC The Atlantic in particular was about Englund dealing with coming out of their break-up.  Phoenix and Heartless Portraits were then standalone albums, although Portrait apparently followed some themes throughout.  And the videos were linked so expect the new material somehow follows on from there.

All that said I'm as in the dark as anyone  :lol

Evergrey's dropping a new album called "Theories of Emptiness" on June 7, 2024, and it's coming out through Napalm Records. You can pre-order it right now! https://www.napalmrecordsamerica.com/evergrey

First single "Falling From the Sun"

Album cover art is quite unlike most Evergrey albums. Not really a fan of this one.

New track is copy/paste, but if you love latter day Evergrey you’ll love the new song.

I don't really like the cover art either.

By the way, the title reminds me of the new Leprous album (Melodies of Atonement), and I don't like that cover art too. :lol
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

The cover art is interesting but it doesn't fit them at all, especially with that font. And it's too digital art-y. I enjoyed this song, not my favourite, but the chorus is catchy.

Yeah, agreed on both points.  The cover art doesn't bother me too much though even if it doesn't feel fitting for them.  The song is solid, catchy, straight forward.

I like the cover art but I feels very out of place for an Evergrey album.
The song is Evergrey by numbers. It makes perfect sense as a first single.
At this point this is one of the bands that is an automatic buy for me. They aren´t pushing boundaries but anything this lineup has done is of a consistent really high quality.

That’s exactly what I expect out of a new Evergrey single. Man, I miss the higher pitched grit on his voice (in for example Wake of the Weary or even King of Errors). I wonder if he can still do that or if he just wants to spare his voice for sustainability.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

I really enjoyed that song.  it's what you'd expect but I like it's a bit faster and higher energy.  MMA vibes from the intro riff and even some shades of Torn era throughout, but better.  Nice Tom/Henrik guitar duel as usual too.  Tom's solo is really creative once again, love his style.

Am really tired of that OTT speed drumming stuff these days but thankfully the song is great catchy chorus ticks the usual Evergrey boxes \m/

This song breaks the usual mould they have been stuck in the last couple of albums just a little bit.  Enough to feel at least a little fresh for them.

Generally agree with the comments so far. I mean, the beginning of the song feels way too "predictable", but the chorus is quite wonderful. The brief guitar harmony part coming out of the solo is very nice. Ok for a first single/opener, hope for some more exciting stuff in the album.

The end of the video suggests Jonas is leaving the band.

I think it's likely true.  Tom Englund said that "There might be some surprises in there" in a comment on his Facebook page.

Cool song, I like it.

But damn, that sucks if he's leaving.  Interesting way to go about it too.  I bought him a whiskey after their progpower show in 2019 and hung out with him a bit.  Was really nice and had a nice convo, although I don't remember what we talked about  :lol  I just remember Tom was there with him and I offered Tom a drink and he said nah but get Jonas one, so I did.

A bit of an odd situation going through the process of recording a new album and shooting videos only to leave.

I liked this song more than the first single they released.

I would love them to somehow bring back Patrick Carlsson, that would be incredible, he was by far the better drummer IMO.  Jonas is great but Patrick's work on In Search and RD is amazing.

I just loved his groove, was immense.

Like, that solo section in As I Lie Here Bleeding springs to mind, the drums just carry it so damn well.  He made my top 25 drummer list too.

Yes!  Nice one.  Love the subtle double kick in there at times too.  His snare sound on this album is tight too.

Also, I'll throw in that main riff of Fragments.  That's fucking huge!!

Quite a lot of their stuff is great, but RD is definitely where it really all came together for me.  One of those examples where it's the first thing you ever hear from an artist and outside of a track or two here and there it can't be topped.  The A Night To Remember DVD is also excellent though, that's a really stacked backing vocal ensemble.

I haven't thought especially hard about the drumming though, I'll have to listen again for that.

In Search of Truth has the edge for me, but we are talking about great stuff anyway.

It’s not necessarily mindblowing drumming there…it just was more…interesting, I guess? Like Kade said, Jonas has really been great (and perhaps even a “better” drummer from a technical standpoint?), but there was something about those earlier albums. In part I think it was the music itself.

I saw them open for Iced Earth in 2004.  They played a short 6-7 song set and all I remember is that Tom's hair got stuck or wrapped around the neck of his guitar and I bought The Inner Circle from the merch stand, a little prior to the actual release date.  They were awesome live though.
