This one just now...

Miscreance - Convergence

Debut record from this Italian band. These guys clearly love that technical death/thrash in the vein of early Atheist and mid-Death (and Sadist too, since we were talking about them not long ago). The influence might still be a little too obvious but, after one listen, I'm quite impressed (I love that kind of sound, so...). The riffage is great and there are some great melodic bits in the solos.

Oh yea, gotta check this out.

Edit: yea this is good stuff dude, keep 'em coming!

Check out GOROD.

Finished my Blackfield run through with For The Music and it ended on a fizzle. The album might have been the weakest of the bunch.

Turns out I checked out Aethra last year. It clearly didn't do enough to get me to go back for another listen. Recommend another of theirs?

Just finishing up my second listen at it definitely hit me better the second time around. This is kind of a beautiful listen and way more chill than their last.

Aethra is my least favorite. I highly recommend starting with Neurotripsticks and Process of a new decline.

I loved The Burden of Restlessness, but then I forgot there was another album coming out shortly thereafter, so I don't think I even checked out Acheron. But I did enjoy Regenerator quite a bit. I don't know how it compares to the previous one, but it has more "positive" vibes vs. Burden...

Their 00s albums are still unbeatable, but the later ones with a different co-vocalist continue to grow on me.  This one is uniquely cool for being in Finnish, and "Murtuneet" is such a killer epic tune.

Continuing the Soilwork revisit...Natural Born Chaos is brilliant but, to me, Figure Number Five is where they truly embrace the fusion with the poppier melodies, and the results are astoundingly good. The heavy and the melodic blends so well, and everyone's performance is super. Strid is just incredible here. Probably a top 3 Soilwork record for me.

As for newer things - Gaerea's new album (Mirage) came out today. I've been reading they are up and coming in the new wave of black metal bands, but I hadn't really checked them out yet. Well, the vocals are a bit exhausting after a while, although they feel suitably "real" and raw, and convey a true sense of desperation. Some of the climaxes are quite striking, though. Interesting listen.

Algebra are from Switzerland, and this is a pretty cool thrash record...I haven't fully figured them out yet - they seem to oscillate between straight-on thrash and a more technical version of it (the first song proper, Resuscitation, is a good example of this). The vocals are mostly "shouty" (more of a crossover-thrash type of thing), although they have more "melodic" moments too. Constricted is interesting this way - it starts like a chugging Sepultura song, but then the chorus is strangely melodic. My favorite song is probably Suspect: the initial riff is a banger, and there's a lot going on after that. Anyway, the musicianship is very good, and I've listened to this more than once, so clearly I'm enjoying it. Let's see if it sticks.

It's interesting how the perception at the time seemed to be that Soilwork and In Flames had become very similar bands (the mirrored "Trigger" and "Rejection Role" music videos lean into this), but Soilwork's material from then has aged better.  We've seen Speed continue to improve his vocals and even have bands where he does nothing but cleans.  Whereas Friden, despite taking lessons, has continued to disappoint.  I still prefer Soilwork with speedier riffs and beats contrasting the melodic parts, so my favorites are The Living Infinite, A Predator's Portrait, Natural Born Chaos, and The Ride Majestic

FNF has always been my fav.  Although, it would be second now, TRM tales the crown these days.

My favorite Adrian Smith album and probably a top 5 all time. Just a perfect record. With You Again is possibly his best song and to top it off he has Dave Murray guest on it. I'm worried that when my Dad dies I won't be able to ever listen to that song again since it is a love letter to his dead Father.

This album never gets old.
beul ni teh efac = Lube In The Face / That has to be wrong.  :lol / EDIT: Oh, it's Blue! I'm an idiot.
Pardon the interruption, but I just had to run in and celebrate the majesty of Lube in the Face as highest moment in roulette history
