From www.liftingshadows.com
Today we’re announcing the publication date for the two new editions of Lifting Shadows: 30th November 2009.
The books are currently being printed, and they’ll be sent out from our warehouse in the days immediately after the publication date. The delivery time will vary depending on where you are in the world, but you should receive your order in plenty of time for Christmas.
The publication date will also mark the end of the pre-order period. So orders placed after 30th November will no longer benefit from the 15% discount on the Classic Edition. If you haven’t placed your order yet, now’s the time to buy.
Finally, if you have already placed your order, please take a moment to check that we have the correct shipping details for you.
It’s a little while since the first orders were placed, so if your address has changed since ordering you’ll need to let us know. You can update your details online using the weblink at the bottom of your confirmation email. Please note that any amendments to your shipping address must be made by 23rd November 2009

Yay! :D
Though there is already a sticky thread about the book Rich :lol Although admittedly a lot of people ignore sticky threads.

Which is exactly why I did it! Sorry man. Couldn't resist. I just don't want any unhappy DT fans who will moan at me if they missed out on the discount ;)
-
:lol Nah it's all good, Nick swapped the stickies around and I posted an update in that one linking to here, so hopefully we have everyone covered.
-
Awesome timing makes for a great birthday present for me. I have quite a few things that I want to read over holiday break and this is at the top of the list. Can't wait!
-
In case this makes a difference to anyone, the publishers are adding Paypal as a payment option for the book . . .
-
For what it's worth, that actually makes a pretty big difference for me--probably the difference between not getting it and (now) getting it.
-
So when do you sign the limited editions? I've always been curious about where in the publishing process the books are signed
-
I was sent a stack of 2000 pieces of paper, which were all signed, then sent back to the printers. They then crop the pages and bind them into the book!

How many pens, markers did you have to use?
-
Went through two sharpies . . .

If anyone is interested in my 1st edition of Lifting Shadows I am selling it on ebay so I can save up for this next semester of college.

Sorry if this goes against the rules to post this. I don't remember it being something we couldn't do though.

Last three days to secure a pre-order discount, so if you were thinking of ordering then you might as well save some money!

Release date is tomorrow. In the warehouse by middle to end of next week, and then sent out to you all!
-
:D
-
Had my parents order it as a Christmas present a few days ago. I'm very interested to see who gets the Golden Book. Good luck to everyone that preordered, and if someone on here gets it, please post. :D Hopefully I win, but I'd be almost as happy if any of you get it ;D
-
The publishers have posted a video of the first copies to arrive in their office being unpacked:
https://liftingshadows.com/2009/11/30/dream-theater-uncovered/ (https://liftingshadows.com/2009/11/30/dream-theater-uncovered/)
-
Cool!
I'll be waiting at my mailbox for the next two weeks, that's for sure!
-
So they'll be shipped the week of the 7th-11th or sometime this week. Sorry, Rich, I am kind of confused
-
The Classic Edition should be shipped this week. Once the publishers / distributors receive the limited, leather edition (which should be the end of this week/ beginning of next) then they will ship too
-
The pre-order discount ends today at 5pm UK time (GMT)
-
Here's the first pic of the limited edition!

:eek
-
:hefdaddy Those look great!
-
Wow...I knew I should have ordered the limited edition.
-
Production problem eh..
Looks like the Count of Tuscany didn't want the world to know about his story.
Seriously though, I am fine with the wait, it gives me something to look forward to

Incidentally, there are still copies of the limited edition available . . .
-
Production problem eh..
Yeah - only a delay of a few days. They needed to make sure the books were properly shrink-wrapped but nothing major. More info here: https://liftingshadows.com/2009/12/02/lifting-shadows-hot-off-the-press/ (https://liftingshadows.com/2009/12/02/lifting-shadows-hot-off-the-press/)
-
I'd hardly even call that a "production problem" :lol
Looking forward to getting my copy in time for Christmas. My present to myself :D
-
Wow, cool pictures that would be a neat place to work.
Oh and if everyone hasn't found it yet, subscribe up: https://www.youtube.com/user/liftingshadowsbook

Footage of the limited edition being unpacked at the publishers is now online over at:
https://liftingshadows.com/news/ (https://liftingshadows.com/news/)
-
To buy or not to buy... BAHHHHH!!!!
-
If I send you footage of me going outside to pick up the package with the book, and then opening the package like a kid on Christmas, will you put it up on the site? :D
-

If you can dress up as Santa when you're doing it, then that's a huge yes from me ;)
-
So if I live in NY, when would you estimate I will get it? The delayed shipping thing is confusing me.
-
Some detailed pics of the limited edition are now up at:

My guess is the 3rd week of December, if they get your order out by Monday
-
I wish ordered the limited edition after seeing those pics.
-
I think this question was asked on MP's forum, but do we get a confirmation e-mail that they are shipped to our address or do they arrive when they arrive. I'll be checking my emails a lot this week hoping to see one
EDIT:Looks like some people have gotten emails confirming shipment. Hope to get one soon.
-
Hi
The books are in the proces of being shipped. Emails were being sent but there seemed to be a problem with them displaying other names and addresses. The publishers are aware of this and trying to solve. Bottom line is though that the books are being shipped this week. With 2000 orders to get through it may take some days but hopefully you'll all have your books soon!
;D
-
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
Thanks Rich!
-
Great news! Thanks Rich.
Throughout this process I may have came off as annoying.. I'm sorry for that
-
Flawless timing for my holiday break! Whoo!
-
bought the regular edition cause i already have the boxset
thanks rich!
-
Awaiting the shipping email :D.
-
Same. The order I made is still sitting in the warehouse (according to the tracking system).
That's right, I have no patience.
-
Just got my email confirming shipment. Now I'm really excited!
-
Still waiting on mine. But I do know its there because I got an email from them concerning I question I had about a charge on my card. He said its sitting in the warehouse waiting for shipment. Hopefully tomorrow.
Edit: What's nice about the publishers being in England... When I wake up in the morning at 6... its already noon or so there.
-
So when do we find out who won the signed copy? ;)
-
:lol I think its ironic that you, lucky7, are asking about winning something
-
I got an email giving details of how to find out if you won the golden book.
I did not. :(
-

I didn't either :(
But I did get shipping confirmation, so it should be arriving soon :D

I did not. :(
Neither did I :(.
Can't wait for the regular edition to arrive though.
-
I didn't win it, but that's okay.
Now does that email also double as a "your book has been shipped" or what. I still haven't gotten a confirmation e-mail, but that "Did you win the golden book" email said all the books are out shipping
-
My copy arrived about half an hour ago, wahooooo! :D
-
Does anyone know if the US orders come in the regular mail or by UPS?
-
Does anyone know if the US orders come in the regular mail or by UPS?
I think its USPS. Let's hope same thing doesn't happen here like it did with my BC&SL boxset. They had too many orders so they refused to ship mine out for awhile.
And I did get my confirmation today. Another 6-10 days, and I will be sitting pretty. I might not get it until Christmas Eve, but that's fine
-
Rich, are all the copy shipped ? Because I didn't receive the e-mail confirmation, but when I entered my code to see if I won the golden book it said that all the copies were shipped.
-
I don't think I won the golden book, but I'm still excited for the regular book.
-
My copy has officially shipped! Hopefully it doesn't take too long to make it's way down here.
-
:lol I think its ironic that you, lucky7, are asking about winning something
Unfortunately not so lucky to win the signed copy. Still lucky though!
-
Getting extremely excited. I hope it comes this week!
-
I got the email last friday. I hope it arrives this week!
-
Haven't received a shipping mail yet :(.
-
I have now received my copy. OOOOOOOOOOOOOH YEAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH :metal
-
Haven't received a shipping mail yet :(.
Same here :'(

A few have arrived in the states. ;D Cannot wait
-
I gotta finish off my current book tomorrow so I can be ready for this. :D
-
Haven't received a shipping mail yet :(.
Are you using hotmail?
It was in my junk folder, I accidentaly checked it, and it had been there since friday.

Nope gmail. And the spam folder is empty as well :(.
-
Stange, well best of luck to you. I'll let you know when I have the book, so you can start to be worried after that ;)
-
I got my email last Wednesday, but no book yet. hopefully it comes before the week is out.
-
Yeah! I got my Classic Edition! It looks so beautiful!!!!
-
That's good news; that means I should get mine very soon. :)

Mine just arrived, and I didn't even know it was shipped :O.

Got my limited edition today. :hat
-
Yeah! I got my Classic Edition! It looks so beautiful!!!!
Cool! When did you get your confirmation e-mail?
December 8th. So there was an 8-day period between the email and actually getting the book.

Looks like I'm on track then for Saturday. Probably a little longer because I'm midwest. But excited. Did it come USPS or UPS

Mine just arrived, and I didn't even know it was shipped :O.
So maybe I won't get a confirmation email either. I got one saying that they all shipped. I guess that's what everyone is talking about.

Still no book today. :(
Hopefully tomorrow prior to the holiday.

Funny, because my Black Clouds box set came a few days before the album was out.
-
Got mine today. :D
-
The post guy is driving up the street now! I hope I get it. It will be awhile before he gets to mine though.
Congrats Nick! Limited or Classic?
-
Classic. Limited was just too much money considering I have the first edition.
-
Okay cool. I was just wondering because it seems only Classics are arriving and no limited editions
-
My limited edition came about a week ago!
-
Still no book! Tomorrow or Thursday though. Are these arriving via USPS or something else (For America)
-
My book came in today =)
-
Now that I've been able to re-read Chapter 1 and start the book once again I must give another thank you to Rich for the initial book and now this updated and improved version! :D
-
Now that I've been able to re-read Chapter 1 and start the book once again I must give another thank you to Rich for the initial book and now this updated and improved version! :D
Thanks - I hope you enjoy the rest of it. Apart from the obvious extension, there are quite a few new bits in there, and the John Hendricks bit is a highlight.
-
Well, now being through the first four chapters I think I can say that the best part is not having come across any obvious "fixes" that found their way into the original, looks great so far! (From a grammar perspective.)
-
I got my limited edition yesterday. It looks great, can't wait to start reading it. Thanks Rich!
-
Still no book :-[
-
I've only gotten a chance to read chapter one, and I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading chapter two tonight after I get home. Thanks for the incredible experience, Rich!
-

Enjoy ;D
-
Got it yesterday, I have already read through all the chapters till Lines in the Sand. Such a pity though that KM didn't contribute to the book. It would have been interesting to hear what were his thoughts on David Prater (besides the obvious thing). Good read though, I'm glad that MP acknowledged that he had controlling issues and I feel sorry for the band during the FII era. They were in the end willing to write a more accessible album and then Elektra didn't do anything with it.
-
My limited edition arrived a couple of days ago... and I didn't even realise it! Only when I started opening my mail just now to wrap up the presents I ordered for people from the net that I realised there was a book-shaped one address from the UK. And it's Christmas Day right now so it was like opening a present from myself that I didn't even know I had. :D
-
Still no
brick book for me.
-
*knock knock*
*goes down stairs, opens door*
"Hi, is there someone named..... Harry... Pears?"
*tries to explain*
:lol
Thank you Harry and Merry Christmas! :tup
-
Awesome :lol
I told them to send it under "Zook" as well :sadpanda:
Merry Christmas.
Edit: How did they pronounce my last name? :lol
-
Awesome :lol

Merry Christmas.
Edit: How did they pronounce my last name? :lol
Like the fruit actually. I told her someone from a message board sent it to me. She was baffled and explained that next time there should also be the resident's name on the package as well. It just says Harry Pears and my address. I think she was considering not giving me the book. :lol
Wow, this book is beautiful.
So your name is really Harry Pears?
-
Yes.
It's annoying that it didn't say your name on it because when I was filling out the form while buying it, there was a specific field which asked if you wanted it sent under a different name for gift reasons. Since I didn't know your name, I just put "Zook" :neverusethis:
Edit: I'm impressed that she said it like the fruit. Most people don't know how to pronounce it the first time around.
-
I guess it would have been smart to give you my name huh...
-
Oh well. At least you have it.
-
Thus is true, and I can't thank you enough.
-
I got my classic edition this morning, just in time for Christmas! The corner of the book is a little banged up, but otherwise unharmed. I'm still considering trying to sell it to a friend and ordering the limited edition. I wonder how many are left. Kinda kicking myself for not getting that one the first time around.
-
Thus is true, and I can't thank you enough.
No problem :tup
-
Still no book... I'm beginning to wonder if I put down the right information for shipping. Under region, were you supposed to put Midwest or the city you live in?
-
Um... you would never put Midwest into anything like that. I'm assuming it was either asking for city, state, or country.
-
Um... you would never put Midwest into anything like that. I'm assuming it was either asking for city, state, or country.
Okay, good, than I filled it out correctly. It must be taking a long time :-[
-
I received my Limited Edition copy the other day....I have already read all the updates from the new edition.....
I will have to reread the entire thing again soon. Great work Rich :) Now could you please write one on Steve Vai or Joe Satriani! ;)

I'll see your leather bound edition and fancy necklace and raise you the original awesome version. :D

-
Yours looks like a year book while mine looks like the Bible of Metal.
-
(https://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k34/Zook85/Image009.jpg)
It's not a book, but I had a pen and paper so what the fuck.
-
This thread just increased by 59.6 win points.
Flyers suck.
-
Well, I'm being reminded of one of my only complaints about the book...
In the seventh chapter you have the line, "Those closest to the band during that era still correctly rate the album as one of their most complete and captivating releases."
While I agree that Images is one of their most complete and captivating releases, I don't believe that such an objective statement should have any place inside the band's biography, even if I agree with it. The quality of Images and Words is subjective, and as such a statement like that should not be etched into stone like this.
This becomes even more of a problem in chapter ten when the book says that, "Burning My Soul and Just Let Me Breathe are also highlights."
My personal opinions aside Dream Theater's fans nearly unanimously agree that Trial of Tears and Lines in the Sand are the two best tracks on the album. I think it would be better to put in phrases like, "Despite their being tracks on the album many fans, along with the band are not fond of, many fans find Lines in the Sand and Trial of Tears to be two of the best tracks the band have ever written."
Far less authority in the statement, while being far more accurate on a measurable (fan reaction) level.
Just something I hoped would be edited out this time around.

*jealous*
-
That's really awesome, I am also quite jealous.
I've already powered my way to the middle of the Inner Turbulence chapter, very much enjoying reading this again. :D
-
Thanks Nick.
Also thanks for the point you raised about the subjective reviews of each of the albums. I always appreciate such constructive criticism and there are a few sections that have changed from the first edition because of it. The FII review is pretty different.
I guess from reading a lot of band biogs written by contemporaries of mine who I respect, I am influenced by their approach. Generally, such books do have album opinions in them. Naturally not everyone will agree with all the points I raise. That gives me only a few other options. Lie and write that I think everything that DT have ever released is perfect. Sit on the fence and be vague about the album's quality. Or not mention them at all which, in my opinion would be not doing my job. So of all of those, the approach I feel most comfortable with is the one I took. I knew it wouldn't please anyone but I'm sure you'll agree, pleasing every DT fan would be a tricky task!
Thanks again and I hope it won't put you off reading my books in the future ;D
-
I understand why you do it, I do it myself in my reviews, simply because if you don't speak with a certain authority the points often don't often come across strongly.
In the same vein if you came on here and said that SMPTe was a monumental album which the band will never top, I'd be completely cool with it, as it's simply an opinion on an internet forum. However, when you state it as a fact in DT's official biography (which is another one I've found, paraphrasing), then it grates because it makes it sound official.
But like I said, it's my only complaint with the book, so a great job. :)
-
Yeah I can see what Nick is saying in a general sense, although I haven't really started reading the book yet. But I always enjoy reading your reviews and articles in Classic Rock Rich, as I think you do a really good job of stating your opinions while also giving a pretty good overview at the same time. Obviously a biography is a different kettle of fish, but at the same time I appreciate that it can be hard to write from a completely independent standpoint and still make it interesting.
-
Just recieved it !! Can't wait to start reading it. :tup
-
I received my copy on Saturday. I am really enjoying it thus far (Chapter 5 right now). A lot of interviews in here that are interesting.
-
Page 120! WOW! :| :| :\ :\
-
I've just read this whole thread, and this book sounds really great! Props to you, Rich! :tup
Also, I ordered my copy of the Classic Edition on Boxing Day, and I live in the UK. When do you reckon I'll get it?
EDIT: Never mind, I just looked over the website again and read that the warehouse is closed until January :-\
Guess I'll have to wait till I'm back at school.
-
Rich, are there any limited edition left? If so, how many? I want to order one, but I don't want to do it until next week.
-

Yes there are some of the Ltd Edition left. Not sure how many, but we are talking a few hundred, so next week will be OK for you!
-
Thanks Nick.

Thank you again Rich!
I finished reading the revised book a few days ago. I did notice that the Falling Into Infinity section was different. Can't speak for anyone else, but I really think you captured what I had been feeling at the time it was released. At the time, my favorite tracks were New Millenium, You Not Me, Hell's Kitchen, Hollow Years, Lines In The Sand and Trial of Tears though most of the album was a huge compromise and some of that was (unfairly) placed on Derek.
I'm actually listening to Falling To Infinity now (Anna Lee at the moment - Yuck! Nothing has changed here) and while my opinion of it has improved over the years (mostly because of improved live arrangements) I might not like You Not Me and Hollow Years (I LOVE this live) much anymore. Most of the songs (as recorded) don't really hold up well over time.
-
I am on the Transatlantic section now, it was good to read the revised Systematic Chaos section and the Black Clouds section.
-
I had finished this a few days ago, and the following is the most interesting information I took from the whole book.
While I knew that Neal had written We All Need Some Light prior to Transatlantic forming, I did not know that Spock's Beard had actually TURNED IT DOWN for two of their albums already. What in the world were they thinking? So what if it sounded a little like Floyd.
-
I ordered my limited edition yesterday. Now that the books are pretty much all shipped out, does anyone know about how long shipping takes from wherever they come from to PA if you are just now ordering?
-

I'd love to hear more stuff that might not have made a Spock's Beard album
I'd also love to see a book about Spock's Beard one day, but I'm afraid I'd be one of the few that would.
-
I've really been at work staring at a computer screen too long. I thought the title of this thread said "Bosk1 Shipping Now!" :omg:
-
My book shipped on Tuesday, apparently.
SO WHERE THE HELL IS IT
-
So is there any interesting scoops concerning the making of BC+SL that anyone would like to share? I'd buy the book but i've already got the first edition and i didn't get an email voucher.

I just got mine today, havent opened the book itself, but it looks pretty cool!
-
Reading it now for the first time. Good stuff. I especially like the Black Clouds Chapter. I thought James feelings toward being left out of the writing process were very interesting.
-
Still waiting for my limited edition. I'm expecting it by Tuesday at the latest hopefully. It was shipped out on the 8th.

The shipping does seem to be slow for a lot of people, so sorry about that. I have flagged it with the publishers. That said, even though it has been slow, most people are getting their books eventually. So please bear with it. If it doesn't come in the next couple of weeks then the best bet is to contact the publishers via the www.liftingshadows.com (https://www.liftingshadows.com) website.

Oh, I'm sure it's on it's way; I remember hearing something about two weeks; I got an email saying that it shipped on the 8th, so if you take out the weekends, I really shouldn't even expect it until around Tuesday. No worries, Rich! :)
-
I have been reading some parts of it, as I don´t have time to read the whole thing. Thank you very much Rich, you make a wonderful job, the book is beautiful. The most interesting part I´ve read is JP´s detailed description of the story behind The Count of Tuscany. He says for him the lyrics are just fun, and considering how well they fit the actual story, I don´t feel they´re bad at all (and finally I get the references to the cannibal curator and the soldiers in the wine ).
-
I received the books a good number of weeks ago and have only just got round to starting it. NOw I can't put it down! Such a great read. Work gets in the way though. Perhaps I should phone in sick for a few days to get it finished. LOL ;D :lol
-
Yeah, there's so much here I didn't know. I was really surprised that Wilson went there on the topic of James' studio input. Kudos to that! I doubt most bands would even let half the amount ongoing controversy in a sanctioned book-- especially when it's DT fans we're talking about.
-
I've got a question about the book. Does it cover the backstory to each and every song, or just a select few? Cause I'd really like to check out what in the world Voices is about...or even Scarred.
-
Not every song has the back story discussed as that would read like a long list. But 'Voices' is discussed as well as most of the tracks on BC&SL
-

One of the nicest things in the book is that you get a lot of those "now I understand what that song is about..." type of things. Not each song is discussed but many you might be interested in are there. Today I learned that ToT is about ego, for example.
-
Just got my LE yesterday. I'm only finishing the first chapter, Rich, but having read the first edition and understanding everything that went down during the production of that one, I must say that this one is absolutely perfect...no typos or anything! Excellent work!
-
Will there be future editions, seeing as there will be future albums?
-

There's nothing planned. This "second edition" was supposed to come out shortly after the first version but do to various reasons to dull to go into here, it was put back until last year.
Who knows what might happen in 5 or 10 years time. Maybe. But at the moment I'm pretty "Dream Theatered out" so am thinking about writing a book on another band. . .
-
Question for ya Rich. In the book, when James talks about getting into his bar fights, he says that the last one was 8 or so years ago. Does that mean James was still getting into fights around 2001? Or was that from an older interview?
Thanks ;D
-
Rich, please let us know if and when you do other books, not necessarily DT, but any band. If I like the band I will definitely buy a book from you.
-
I just finished up the book last night, and I must say, absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for writing it, Rich. It was truly a treat to get to follow the DT story from the start up until where they are now. I also enjoyed the Appendix, seeing as I'm a huge fan of all the DT side stuff.

I think the interview with James was done around 2005/2006 during his tour to promote his Elements Of Persuasion solo album. So I guess we are looking at the mid to late 90's

That's great and thanks for that. I will of course let you all know as and when!

Thanks for this - it really means a lot to know you've enjoyed reading it :-)
-
I finished it up mid January. I really enjoyed reading, I learned quite a few things that suprised me, like Jordan doing drugs during his starting years in the 70s or so. But it was a joy to read, and also somewhat sad to finish, because of my excitement.
-
I just finished reading the book this week, and it was an excellent read. Great job, Rich! I feel like I know them personally now.
-
I haven't started yet, I have so much to read :-[.
My dad is saying that your site is a scam by the way (I tried to disagree :p). My mother ordered the book because she didn't know I had it yet. When she found out, she proceeded to ask customer support what to do and they told her to send it back. She did, but apparantly it got lost somewhere and now she is down 25€. I hope this is a individual case though, kinda sucks :/.
-
You could have send it to me, though. :p
-
Finally finished it. Great book. Knew mostly everything from ToT-on (which is why my reading slowed) but was well worth it for all the other info.
-
I caved and bought the updated version, never read the original. I'm sure the extensive shipping time will be worth it. Thanks for your hard work on letting fans in on our favorite band's little world, Rich. :tup

Rich, Can you please write a Steve Vai biography...Pretty Please! Van Halen from the beginning would be great.
I love the Limited Edition Rich, I am currently reading it on the way to work each day on the train, and I have had a few comments that the book looks like a Bible, and it is for a dream theater fan. :D
-
^^
Yeah, there are a few bands I'm thinking about writing the next biography about. I'll keep you all posted!
There's also talk of a paperback version of the book too, likely to be released via Amazon and obviously aimed at a more budget conscious price. From speaking with the publishers, I suspect this might be set for a release around June this year.
-
Can't wait to get a copy of the book from Amazon when it happens!
-
So Rich, what are the chances of another edition being released afrer the past few months' events?
-
So Rich, what are the chances of another edition being released afrer the past few months' events?
That would be funny. I'm guessing it'll be a long time before everyone talks about it in enough detail to warrant and updated version (especially also if there are legal matters involved).
-
Check his blog. The new edition has been delayed indefinitely. It will be a long time...
-
I wouldn't want a new edition right now anyway. Give the dust time to settle on this matter and let a new guy settle in for at LEAST one album and tour.
-
Yeah - there were plans for a paperback release around now but with everything that has happened, I've pulled the plug. So I guess we are looking at a couple of years or so. Maybe even four/ five years to coincide with the 30th anniversary. Plus there are other projects I want to get stuck into, and I don't want the publishers just to start re-issuing the book every two years or so . . .
-
Thanks for the update Rich. Very much appreciated, good luck with everything you're up to!
-
I don't see the need for a new edition right now; what I'd really love is for you to start printing more copies of the Classic Edition. You've been out of stock forever and I'd really like to read the book!
-

I sent an e-mail the other day asking them if they would re-stock the Original Box Edition, and I was told that there are no plans to re-manufacture it. I guess the same goes for the Classic Edition as well. So your only option at the time would be the Limited Edition.
-
It's certainly something for me to think about. There are a number of options open to make the book available. I will of course let you all know what's happening as soon as I know. But clearly the text will need a major overhaul as there is no point in re-issuing a book that's so out of date!

It isn't that out of date. And I'll bet a small run would still be pretty successful.
-
It's more work than you think. The intro would have to be completely re-written as it starts off detailing Mike's role in the band. Then there would need to be an update on the split. Then the new drummer and the new album. Anyway we'll see. I will get the rights to the book back next November so there are a lot of options then, including self publishing . . .

So, Rich, what would you suggest to someone who doesn't own the book yet?
a) Get the Limited edition, which is the only one in stock for now
b) Wait for some other edition to get restocked
c) Wait for a new version of the book in no less than a year
Thanks in advance for your input! :)
-
Well I know that the "Classic Edition" won't be re-issued as they have printed all they are going to do for that standard hardback. Depends on how long you want to wait I guess. If you need a copy now then the only option will be to get the limited edition or look on eBay.
I have no plans to work on the DT book anytime soon as I'm nuts deep in other projects at the moment. It will happen at some point but I honestly have no idea when.
Not much help I know but it's all I can tell ya!
-
Anyone here wanna sell me a used copy? :-\
-
Does anyone know if more print runs will be made for the Limited Edition? I didn't jump on it when it was in stock late last year, and now it is out of stock. :(
I sent an email through the LiftingShadows.com site requesting an ETA, but never heard back.
-
Yesterday I read the A Change of Seasons chapter. Thinking about it, the current line-up wouldn't be too much displeased if Prater ever comes back... maybe LaBrie, but still.
-
Just got my Lifting Shadows in the mail yesterday. I'm up to the recording of I&W. Awesome so far - good job Rich!
-
I have never had the patience to read books of that length but Lifting Shadows had so much information that it kept my attention. Now if when Queensryche shuts it down that Rich could get the dirt on their issues and do the same project.
-

Wait, do they have copies in again? I thought they were all sold out.
-
So, Rich....when is the book gonna be back in stock? I'm interested in buying one.
-
Same here.
-
I could sell my limited edition one with Rich Wilson's sig. PM me details.
-
I appreciate the offer, but I want a fresh copy. Maybe someone else could take you up on that.
-

Right on. It's only been read once, and I have been very good to it. Totally understand, however.

Oh my god, it was like Christmas in my mailbox today. After months of searching I finally found a copy of Lifting Shadow. :metal :metal :metal :metal

Good luck putting it down.

I sold my copy recently. I don't I read [past the second chaper

I want so bad :'(

I've founded one on polish Ebay, but the price went so crazy that I just couldn't afford that... :-[

The craziest thing was that it was on Amazon for $20 dollars (plus shipping) and in "like New" condition. Its seemed too good to be true, but here it is. I don't think the seller knew what he had on his hands. ;D

Lucky one ;) books are expensive in Poland, more than CD's or DVD's, so it will be very hard to find one for me ;)
-
Maybe they'll come out with a Kindle edition some day.
-
Maybe this topic has been covered several times, and if so I apologize, but why don't they print more books when there obviously is a demand for them? I want to read it so badly! :P
-
For the same reason the Trapeze CD "Welcome to the Real World" is selling for 80-120 bucks. There is a select group of diehards that are willing to pay that much (I paid 45 bucks for mine), but the vast majority of people wouldn't even spend 10 bucks on it.
For what its worth, I think the book would have respectable sales at certain retail stores but its just a matter of convincing a publishing company with good distribution the same thing. On that same token, they might distribute but say it should be cut down by 100-200 pages which isn't worth it.
-
Well I'll tell you this much. I'm going to be all over the next batch.
-
Just finished the book.
It was quite informative and one of the most satisfying reads I have ever experienced.
-
Thanks for that. Currently trying to put together and update for the publishers. They were always going to issue this as a paperback, so I figured I should at least update the story to cover the developments over the last year or so!
-
Why? What's happened over the last year or so?
:neverusethis:
Should be a great update. :tup
-

Dear me - good luck with that, I don't envy you in the slightest! Bloody brilliant book, but the sheer volume of words... the number of counts of the word "drummer" you'll have to amend alone must be astronomical. Then reworking the BC&SL chapter - seem to remember it ended on an "onwards and upwards" kind of note, originally, didn't it?
How long have you been working on it? Or, scheduled to continue? Are you doing further interviews, at all?
(...How many words do you know? Is it spelt "smurfs" or "smurves?" How do you say "I love you" in italian? Are we there yet?)
-
Well, I HAVE to get this version.
-
It is a fairly big job. Basically the intro and ending need completely changing, the BC&SL chapter needs to be edited down (it's too large). Likely the "Side Projects" chapter will have to disappear for the same reason of size. I have interviewed all the guys at various points over the last 18 months or so for features for Classic Rock Presents Prog and much of those interviews weren't used due to size. So I've got plenty of new material to work with. In theory it shouldn't take too long, but I'm nuts deep into writing a book on another prog band, so it's a bit of a juggling job . . .
-
Why? What's happened over the last year or so?
:neverusethis:
LOL
I have the book and I've read it twice.
Rich, don't you think it might be better to wait a bit to see what else develops? (Grammy and so on). Also considering how Mike Portnoy always "updates" the story, not just with his words but his actions, a new edition might have to change a lot after only a few months. Just my 2 cents. Anyway, if you update it, I will be glad to read the new edition!
-
I haven't seen any version of Lifting Shadows, but with all the recent developments I'll look into getting the latest edition when it comes out!
-
It's difficult as there will always be updates to the story. But as they are going to put it out anyway, I think it's right to update it as I do still regularly receive emails from people wanting to buy it and it wouldn't be right for people to buy something that is so woefully out of date.
-
I have the first edition, my name is there and the book was autographed by portnoy/petruccy/rudess/myung/labrie. I will buy an updated version when Portnoy rejoin the band.
-

So you're never going to buy an updated version then?
Rich, I don't know what the 'Side Projects' chapter currently includes, but that sounds like something worth keeping for future editions. I originally decided to buy the book literally days before Mike announced he was leaving, and at that point decided to wait for the next edition, since it will no doubt have a lot of additions.
I do look forward to the next version, whenever it comes out.

Will there be revealing stuff that we may not be privy to without purchase of the book? I'm getting married and will be hard pressed to afford another copy.
Also, love the use of "balls deep" in your other post.
-
Excellent news! I barely missed ordering the previous edition before it went out of stock. I checked at work that it was still possible to order, but when I arrived home to make the order, it had been sold out. So as soon as the book hits the market, I will finally get to read the story of the band in detail.
So many thanks for still working on the book.
-
I'm nuts deep into writing a book on another prog band, so it's a bit of a juggling job . . .
Mind divulging which band?

If his answer is a simple "Yes.", you won't know if he means the band, or if he does mind.

I know what it is guize
Can't tell you just yet - things still a bit up in the air . . .
Up in the air? Like a PLANE?
If you go to Wikipedia and type in "plane", it brings up a disambiguation page.
The first page listed is Fixed-wing aircraft. If we list the hyperlinked words in the first sentence, we have: aircraft, flight, wings, lift, and airspeed. 3 of these words have a T in them. The other 2 have an "S" in them, which is for "Search for planes", but we already did that so we can ignore it. But what does the T stand for?
The second page listed is Plane (tool).
T IS FOR TOOL.
To confirm this, look at the third and fourth results: Platanus and Acer Pseudoplatanus.
Platanus? Lateralus.
Acer Pseudoplatanus? Aenima pseudo Lateralus.
So it's Tool, probably. If it's not Tool, it's Yes. How do I know?
Can't tell you just yet - things still a bit up in the air . . .
YET. Take out the "T" for Tool and you get "Ye", for "Yes".

Not Tool or Yes though - nice try!

I guess I stop the hunt for the elusive white 355 Howard Roberts guitar then. :lol

Was just on the website checking some stuff out (extracts etc). Any updates on when or if this is going to be released again?
Would love to read about the band in more detail.

Yeah, still waiting for this. Still plan on buying it as soon as it's available.
Hurry up, Mr. Wilson.
No rush.

I try not to think about how much I want this edition to hurry; I missed the last one by, hm, not knowing about it :blush really really anxious to get it and read it.

Last night I dreamed that the new album, the Luna Park DVD and the newest edition of this book along with a bunch of other stuff (autographed sticks, picks, posters, t-shirts) were released together in a mega package. I ordered it from Amazon for $200.
-
So, nothing happened after all? I am looking at you, Mr. Wilson, I know you are watching this :D
-
Literally just approved the cover and final text with the publishers!

That's magnificent news, Mr. Wilson! Really great to hear that! Can we then assume that the new edition of the book will be released togeter (that is in a similar timeframe, not in the same package) with either the DVD or the new album? :)
-
The cover art for the book is here! Thanks to the rather awesome Scott Hansen for the design!
Thanks Scott

Yep, and 5YIALT in the Mirror from Awake. At this res there are a few things I can't quite identify, but it seems as if everything is represented. I think the bird is from Greatest Hit even?
Not to mention the Photoshopping is much more seamless than on the DT covers....
-
Well, it looks awesome. But I just wanna read the damn thing!
-
Yes, Scott has done an incredible job with the cover!
There will be a full release of info in the coming week or so, but basically, we are hoping to have this released in the beginning of September, with ordering available well before then. They'll be doing a pre-order discount too.
The delay has been down to making sure we could produce this at reasonable cost and make sure that we could ship it worldwide as cheaply as possible. One of the issues was the postage costs for previous versions, so we've tried our best to solve that. Don't mis-read that as it being a cheap and nasty paperback, as it really isn't!! It's just a LONG book in terms of pages and words, so there are printers out there who were taking the p*** in terms of production costs!
Anyway, we're nearly there now, so I'll release more when I know more!!
-
September just keeps getting filled with awesome releases! Thank you.

Make a magnified copy of the ADTOE booklet, cut out the unicyclist and stick it somewhere on your poster with some tape. It's what Hugh Syme would do :metal

Yeah, I was gonna say, "DT fans don't remember this amazing poster (Black Clouds and Silver Anniversaries)?"

I have it on a T-Shirt. Yeah, I recognized it right away, I just wasn't sure if maybe it was a variation on previous versions of the book or something.

If I remember right, the original designer was SteveTheater, right?
It's definitely awesome that the unicyclist has been added!
Edit: ...or maybe it was SetlistScotty! I don't know how I got the usernames confused. Whoops, lol! Good job again!

But...but...but that's what I did. :-[ Are you saying I'm Hugh Syme now?
Truth be told, some of the elements have been shifted around a little bit to make sure that they all fit within the boundaries of the cover (being portrait style, instead of landscape style which is what the original image was). But yeah, otherwise it's pretty much what was on the Black Clouds and Silver Anniversary poster and T-shirt. :) Glad to see it getting used again, and for something as appropriate as the biography! Thanx again Rich for choosing to use it!
-
Well it's an awesome job. And not wishing to disrespect Hugh Syme, but when you look at some of his stuff, this is leagues ahead. I've been sat on this art for over a year now whilst we finished everything on the book, so I'm really happy that I can reveal it now!

Thanks mucho for the update regardless, sir. :hefdaddy :woot:
-
Great news and great cover! :tup Thanks to both of you, Rich and Scott :)

I know you said that the details are coming soon, but I just wanted to confirm that the "Side Projects" section was cut for this release (so that I know to hold onto my current edition AND buy the new one!).
Thanks Rich!
-
That's correct - the "Dreaming Aside" chapter which covered all the side-projects has got the chop to make room for all the new stuff!

any chance of a pdf of that section for those of use that missed it last time?

Mr. Wilson, will the book cover all the events leading up to the release of ADTOE or will it go further down the road onto the tour and maaaybe this new studio epoch?

Rocket 88
New edition of Dream Theater book 'Lifting Shadows' available to pre-order in paperback this week. Fully updated by Rich Wilson featuring new interviews with the band & others, it covers the departure of Mike Portnoy, the search for his successor and the band's spirited return. Plus this stunning cover art by Scott Hansen.
-
Excellent! I will definitely be preordering.
-
Questions:
Is this basically the same book as before but with the more recent years covered and maybe a bit taken out (like the side projects chapter)?
Is the foreword still the same? That would be kind of weird, since it would be written by someone who is now no longer in the band.

Awesome, I've been hoping to read this book for quite some time. Will definitely be pre-ordering :tup

I'd like to know the answer to this too. No offense to Rich or the work he puts into these, but buying the whole book over again is not something everyone can afford, especially if it's just a new chapter or two every time an album comes out. As much of a book lover as I am personally, a brand new edition of the same book every few years is just a bit more than I can commit myself to. As someone who already owns two versions, I don't think I could justify a third anyway really.
Also, since much of the book is researched from previous interviews and magazine articles, I'd have to know that the recent chapters would be based on a lot more than some of the big stories I've seen on DT lately. For example, I already own the Rich Wilson story about Mike Portnoy leaving that was printed in Prog magazine, so if the chapter on that is mostly a repeat, I'd even have less of a reason to justify purchase of Lifting Shadows edition 3.
-
I don't have any previous version of the book, so I'd be interested in this regardless.

This has been covered before but a valid point nonetheless. Obviously Rich can address it much better than I but basically the first few editions were a limited run for no other reason than it is hard to get a book published about a relatively unknown band regardless of if it has an incredibly strong fanbase. The first edition was meant as a limited run and the second was meant as a cheaper alternative for those that either couldn't afford to buy it the first time around or maybe weren't aware.
This edition, Rich has stated, will remain in print for quite a while and will hopefully be in book stores.

It is all new information than what was presented in the magazine. I can't imagine much of it will be too incredibly ground breaking and different but it is new info based off of unpublished interviews.
-
Okay, but if you are someone who already bought the first or second editions, I can see how some might feel that coughing up full price just for a few new chapters doesn't seem quite worth it.
I'll be most interested to see if the current members (minus Mangini) are more frank with their comments regarding Portnoy's departure. Let's face it, they have all been pretty diplomatic about it, but I am sure a lot of us who would like to hear them speak a little more candidly and honestly about what really went on behind the scenes before, during and after his departure.

I don't know, I think they've been pretty candid about the whole issue. Frankly, I'm surprised they said as much as they have.
-
I'm confused.. When can we order, and how? Is pre-ordering better for any reason other than getting it the day it comes out? (sorry, new at this)

I agree that they have been pretty diplomatic almost to the point of frustration for people like us that want to know every, or at least most of the details. I mean, I respect and admire them for how they have handled the situation but at some point I would like to hear all the dirt even though it really is none of my business.
As far as coughing up more money goes, I think that implies this is done just to make more profit when it is really just a matter of getting a good book deal and making sure everything is up to date when the latest edition comes out. I would much prefer Rich do it this way. Afterall, each edition has been significantly cheaper than the last (at least Rich has stated the paperback will be of average paperback cost) so I'm not going to be complaining.
-
Yeah, I guess before I buy, I just kinda want to know if they speak openly or if it's just Prog Magazine's Novemeber 2010 issue where it just felt like a press release and calculated and rehearsed comments
-
I wonder if an electronic version of the book will be available, i would much prefer to buy such a version.
-
I take the point about the number of editions, but this is the situation. The original limited edition, 2 book set was especially special (!) and as with all books, there were then releases set for hardback and paperback. This is pretty standard in the publishing industry. Once I knew that the publishers wanted to do the hardback and now the paperback, I had two choices. I could either leave the text as it was, taking the story up to 2007, and let them release it anyway, or I could update the story to make it pretty current. As it's my name on the front of there, I chose the latter option. At least people then don't feel short-changed. The paperback is really aimed at people who to date haven't bought the previous versions, and is priced accordingly. I accept that there will be those who will still buy it even though they've already got a copy, but hopefully the price will make them reasonably happy, as I've battled hard to make sure that the price is as low as we can get it.
There are no plans for an ebook or Kindle edition at this time.
The book does contain new interviews and uses previously unused interviews from those I did with the band just after MP's departure.
Hope this clears a few things up!!!
-
Thanks Rich! I appreciate you stopping by to tell us.
I hope the new interviews are juicy and..... gossipy..... (for lack of a better term)
-
There are no plans for an ebook or Kindle edition at this time.
Daaamn that would make my life so much easier...
Anyway i'll have to get this book sometime.
-
I have the first edition with our names printed in it. I wonder what they sell for nowadays...
I only read it once and used it as a reference a few times but the quality of the package was amazing.

No matter which option you would have chosen, someone would bitch about it. Personally, I have both previous versions and intend to buy this one, as well.

Any serious DT fan that doesn't have this book is truly missing out. You would think everything is on the internet, especially about a band like Dream Theater, but this book has so many incredible details and interviews that shed tons of light on the band, both during good times and bad times.
I am stoked for this edition!
-
I'm glad to have the opportunity to finally pick one up! I haven't been able to get my hands on any prior to now
-
And the fact that there are so many people who missed out on being able to pick up a copy before, is also the reason for the paperback! Everything is set now and I expect to be able to post a link to the purchase page by the end of the week.
-

I still think 'candid' is the term you're looking for.

So you're saying it's removed for the Dreaming Aside book? with new chapters???

I have a copy of 2nd edition. Might buy this one sometime down the line :JayOctavarium:

Ordered! September is going to be a great month!

I'll be happy to buy this for the third time.
I LOVE the "especially special" edition even though it isn't up to date. The photo book is a big reason why.

Just preordered! :metal

Wiith all the respect to Rich's great work, which I enjoyed in its first edition, I'm sceptical about buying the newest edition eventhough the price is quite low indeed. I mean, if the only new thing is MP's departure and MM's "wind of change" I believe there is tons of interviews and statements from everybody since MP announced his departure 'til up to a few days ago and. If you haven't any older editions of course you gotta have this, no question.
-
Since I don't have any of the previous versions this is great. Preordered :metal

I have no way of knowing this, but it's possible that they opened up more to Rich more because it was for the book.

I'm only buying this if it comes out in an online/kindle version, because I've never trusted buying things online and trusting them to find their way to your doorstep without having your credit card number stolen and/or some other unpleasant thing happening.

I might get it as wall, it should be interesting read ;)

I hope it ships sooooooooooon.

Cool interview, but I do have to take umbrage with this comment:
I do worry that they might end up like Rush - releasing a new album every so often that nobody really cares about and then doing a greatest hits tour.
Rush has never been a "let's do a greatest hits tour" band. Even the R30 tour, while having a lot of their most well-known songs, still had a crapload of deep cuts and whatnot.
And while the casual fans who only want to hear the classics at concerts might not care about new stuff, tons of Rush fans care a lot about every new album they put out, so there is a whole lotta wrong with that statement.

Totally agree with this. Though somewhat unrelated, but it would be amazing to see DT continuing to thrive in the future as Rush does at their age.

How do you pay for your digital versions...cash?!? Pretty sure credit card fraud can occur no matter what format you buy a product in.

I think perhaps the point here is that Rush has reached the level that say, a Pearl Jam has. Whereby they have a huge core following and have no need to write anything outside of their comfort zone. As a result their new material is purchased by said core, but it really doesn't push the musical boundaries that the band had in the past.
I personally don't think DT are at that level, nor will they ever be. But they might enter a similar situation if they don't leave that comfort zone. Which by the way, I 100% feel that they are capable of doing.
-
Wow, that Rush comment was just absolutely terrible. Clockwork Angels is a better album that 50% of the DT albums.
-

I trust Amazon, I don't trust whoever the author of this novel is. The main thing I don't trust is actually getting something that you pay for online.
-

You state that as if it's a fact. Personally I disagree. I think ToT is better than VT, SC is better than S&A, and ADToE is better than CA.
To me, Rush are much more of a nostalgia act than DT - I know part of that is because Rush do have a much deeper back catalogue of music, but I also think DT's contributions to the modern music scene are much more relevant.

1. You have no idea how print books are sold online, do you? Hint: rarely direct from the author, usually through a publisher.
2. You have no idea how ebooks are sold, do you? Hint" THEY CHARGE A CREDIT CARD OR PAYPAL. Fraud's just as likely buying an eBook.

Talking of terrible comments.
Rush hasn't been good or relevant for 20 years. They are the Metallica of prog-rock. How's that for a comment.
-

Wow, this might actually be the worst comment I've ever seen. Counterparts, S&A and especially Clockwork Angels are classic albums. I'd honestly put Clockwork over most DT albums, as I've already said. It's just an amazing hour of music, it's varied, it's memorable, it's FRESH sounding. Have you even listened to Rush in the past 20 years?

Rush has never been a nostalgia act. They have always played a ton of music from whatever new album they are touring on. Nostalgia acts (like most bands that were around in the 70s who still tour) tour nowadays and play almost nothing but material from 30+ years ago. That ain't Rush. Never has been, never will be.
Rush hasn't been good or relevant for 20 years. They are the Metallica of prog-rock. How's that for a comment.
Well, it's an inaccurate and nonsensical comment, but it is a comment. I gotta give you that. :lol :lol

If you want some people to agree with you, perhaps you should seek out a Rush forum. While there may be many Rush fans here, I doubt very many of them would agree. Clockwork Angels was good, but it can't touch 90% of DT's discography.
-
Clockwork Angels is a better album than:
When Dream and Day Unite (1989)
Images and Words (1992)
Awake (1994)
Falling into Infinity (1997)
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999)
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002)
Train of Thought (2003)
Octavarium (2005)
Systematic Chaos (2007)
Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009)
A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011)
Look at that, Clockwork Angels is better than 50% of Dream Theater albums!
-
Thanks for once again imposing your opinion on everyone like it's a fact.
-
Oh, come on. Do we really need to say in every post again that what we say is our opinion? ???
Anyway, I would say Clockwork Angels is better than the majority of DT's records. IN MY OPINION.
-

XBOBX's statement really didn't sound like an opinion. Whether you agree with him or not, it's very imposing, as if that little break down is some kind of concrete visual proof. ::)
-
Anyone who thinks Rush is a nostalgia act hasn't seen them live in the last few years. They are anything but, and CA pushes their own musical boundaries pretty hard if you listen to it honestly. Comparing them to DT is a waste of time because it's subjective, but I do think they've grown more over their last 5-6 albums than DT has.
-

In my opinion, no we don't.
Wait, did I do that wrong?

As far as I'm concerned, there's a VERY good case to be made that one of Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and/or Hold Your Fire is Rush's greatest album. I'd even throw Counterparts into that discussion, or their most recent album, as I've already mentioned.
-
Is this going to become available on Amazon anytime soon?

Well, that's still opinion. Personally, I regard Systematic Chaos very highly, and to me, Clockwork Angels doesn't even come close to touching it.

Just an opinion? YES!
Do I agre with it? YES as well!
Is Rush a nostalgia act? NO! Every tour they play more than half of the album they are touring to promote. And I find that they´re still pushing barriers by releasing albums that are completely different from each other. It´s hard to be innovative when you´ve been around this long and are used to a certain composition process and certain patterns (look at the Rolling Stones and even a bunch of much younger bands!), but I feel that Rush is still innovative whilst not leaving their core sound.
But hey guys, let´s not turn this thread into another Rush vs. DT like many other topics and forums do. I know I have done just the opposite with my post, but can we focus on DT´s book from here onwards?
-
Well, back to the point, it's still an awesome book well worth owning. Who cares if the author thinks of Rush as a Nostalgia act? It's not a Rush book, it's a DT book.
-
I would take Clockwork Angels of WDADU, TOT - BC&SL, and maybe FII.
-
As a whole, it definitely beats FII, but a couple songs on FII are better than anything on CA.
-
I would take Clockwork Angels over 8V - BC&SL, and FII.
FTFM
-
I'm now not buying the book because the author holds a terrible opinion about Rush.
-
Well that's kinda dumb, but whatever floats your boat mate. There's no such thing as terrible opinions, only terrible in your opinion :tup
-
Clockwork Angels was made my second favorite Rush album. Power Windows is my favorite, and the fact that they played so much of it this tour made very very happy. Rush has said themselves that they are not a nostalgia act, and that if they did do a nostalgic tour, it would most likely be their LAST.
In my opinion, I feel as though most of Rush's albums are great because I usually never want to skip any of the tracks. Rush tends to be very good at making an entire album very strong. I would never skip a track going through Power Windows, as I love every song. Same goes for A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Grace Under Pressure, Counterparts, and Vapor Trails (REMIX COMING OUT OCTOBER 1ST :metal :metal :metal)
Dream Theater, however, finds me skipping many tracks. (on WDADU, Awake, FII especially, SDOIT, ToT, and SC.)

Dead serious. I'm not buying a novel written by a credit card-stealing, Kindle-hating, Rush-despising communist.
Rich Wilson, as hefdaddy pointed out, is a member here, and has been very active in keeping in contact with the fans, both here, and on the Lifting Shadows Facebook page. I have bought both previous editions of the book, and never had a problem. I do not see where all of this hate came from.
-
Yeah, seriously. Even though his comment about Rush in that interview was way off, there is still no need for that kind of bile being thrown at him.
-
I hope its a joke...even so, probably goes to far for a joke.
This just goes to show you though, that it is never a good idea to speak in terms of absolutes for opinions...especially when you're a public figure like Rich. People will pick it apart like crazy.
Still love the guy though.
Edit: Neglected to include the word "pick"
-
This is also not a thread about Rush.
-

He should have known that by saying something like that about Rush, he'd get branded a credit card thief. Logic!

Haha. Identity theft is no laughing matter!!!! :lol

I trust Amazon, I don't trust whoever the author of this novel is. The main thing I don't trust is actually getting something that you pay for online.
Are you a time traveler from 1997?

August is nearing its end so I hope this thing ships a bit earlier.

is the preorder discount still available? i hadnt ordered it yet because of some money/card issues, but still definitely planning to get it :metal

I ordered it a few days ago and got the discount.

-
Just saw DT post about this on facebook and forgot I wanted to order the paperback edition after I moved and that was like 6 monthes ago. So I just ordered it. Should be a fantastic read.

So any reviews from anyone who purchased the new edition with update regarding MP leaving and MM joining?
I have the first one and the one released just before MP left, just wondering if I should?

if you followed press with the changeover, there's nothing new to learn from the book. it's a good summary if you didn't, though, and it's pretty good at mentioning but not detailing MP's more buffoonish behaviour at the time.
-
Thanks for that. Would have purchased it either way, just found it strange no one had posted anything after the new release.
We all remember MP at the time....I was even blocked from his site and still have no idea why...if anything I was more positive than most.
-
I can't believe I left my book on a plane. So pissed at myself. And I just left another book on a plane last week. I have a bad habit.

SOMEBODY STOP LEAVING THESE MOTHER EFFING BOOKS ON THESE MOTHER EFFING PLANES!!

:rollin
Going to have to buy another copy at some point because I was enjoying the read and I only got up the the recording of I&W

It's also still way too early for getting anything that isn't publicly known. I read the first edition of the book, and you could divide it into two parts essentially: The "past" , which included a lot of interesting dirt, and the "happy-family present", where every band member was content, nothing was going wrong, nobody wanted to leave, bla bla bla .. and a few months later MP leaves the band.
I would think the newest edition of the book will have the same thing. They dare not disclose anything that might get them into trouble, so it will stick to stuff that is widely known.

Good point. Its usually that way with everything, all the dirty details get released in a book many many years later. Maybe there will be a third edition that has all that fun.
-
^^Good Points. I figure by now Rich Wilson has moved onto another artist. He used to post either on here or MP.com all the time.
It must have been a little disheartening to release two releases a leather bound book and the paperback and no sooner published a founding member leaves the band, and yes he did publish an update with the pc split information.
It sounded like a labour of love for him, and I figure not every fan purchased a copy of either edition be it for the reason they don't read, too expensive etc. I think at this point even ten years away we would be lucky to receive a new edition. I hope we do, just saying......
-
I've not checked in here for a while now - I've been too busy writing a book on Lenin ;)
I can't see me releasing another printed version of the book. I've already had to defend the release of this version! It was only ever released for those people who didn't get the original versions, and intended as a cheaper way for people to get hold of a copy instead of paying $$$ on Amazon. I had added the update chapters really because I felt that was the right thing to do (as I knew there would be a few people who buy everything DT related even if they had the previous editions). The only thing I might do is pop it out on Kindle in a couple of years - again for people that don't have a copy.
Apart from popping down the docks and meeting with my comrades to plot the overthrowing of this capitalist, credit card loving government, I have been writing a book on another prog band which I'm just completing. Should be out early next year. I can't reveal who just yet, but I will when I can.

Sounds exciting! :tup

^^^^Great news Rich, just ordered a copy of the new edition earlier this morning ( it is after 7pm Fri in Aussie land) I noticed there was one on Ebay that was more expensive than direct and it had heaps of watchers...why do people avoid going direct?! ::)
I am sure it has been said before but Thank you so much for writing Lifting Shadows...it is a great read for any fan.
After your nest prog band book, feel free to start a book on Steve Vai (my wish!)

(as I knew there would be a few people who buy everything DT related even if they had the previous editions).
;D
I don't buy everything DT related, but I did buy all 3 editions of Lifting Shadows.

At the time when they came out I hope. Because if you bought one of the earlier editions recently... I don't envy your bank account.

Yes, as they came out.
-
I finally ordered my copy of Lifting Shadows!! I don't read books at all but this one is really interesting so I have to read it. I'm excited but don't have time to read it until the summer because I have so much school work.
-
Was there anything cut between the 1st edition and the most recent edition (the one I just bought and read)?
-
There was a "side projects" section that was cut out of the latest edition, don't know if anything else was left out.
-
I'm pretty sure that was it but also keep in mind the last edition had the addition of a final chapter summing up the split with new interview excerpts
Edit: excerpts not experts. Glad I caught that typo almost one year later
-
Man, I really gotta get the new edition.
I have the previous one (2nd I think? The one that ends on BC&SL). My wife got it for my birthday not long after it came out, and I love it. It's a great read.
Though I wonder if I should wait a few years. I'm betting that The Astonishing release/tour will provide a lot of interesting material for the book, should Rich continue writing. Also, was DT12 covered in the most recent edition?
Anyway, thanks for such a great book, Rich. It's definitely my favorite! It even kinda ruined the Score documentary for me lol I love it, but now whenever I watch it it's like, "Man, I wish they could've added at least another hour to this thing so they wouldn't have to gloss over certain parts." ;D
-
Also, was DT12 covered in the most recent edition?
No, it got up to ADToE.
-
I'm pretty sure I read that he was done with the book. I don't have a quote but that was my understanding. I'm glad of that, though. There's no reason to update the book after every album. I would be good the way it is, or even one last large update to the book after DT hangs it up.
-

Yea, maybe once they call it quits it would be nice to have a finished biography on the band up to the end of their careers.

You are correct. I actually reached out to Rich via Facebook a few months ago and he let me know that he was finished with Lifting Shadows. It makes sense, as he is writing new books and it doesn't make sense to tie yourself down with one band.
I'm very thankful that we got the updates that we did. My wallet is thankful that there won't be yet another new edition to buy :lol

Ah, ok. That makes sense.
In that case, I'll have to pick up the new edition soon!

Agreed! It would be very fitting.
-
You know what could be a fun discussion? What would have been other good titles for the book, whether it is a song title, album title, or lyrics?
I'd easily say that, if it had been written after DT12, that "Behind the Veil" would have been perfect (if Lifting Shadows wasn't an option).
-
'Beneath the Surface' could have worked, had the book been written later.
-
Given their resilience throughout their career (especially in their early, pre-record label days), id say Blind Faith.
Or Erotomania or Space Dye Vest, to really confuse people who don't know DT. ;D

When I got into Dream Theater a few years back and became quite obsessed with the band, I bought the paperback version of Lifting Shadows. I was truly interested and liked it so much, that I went looking for the hardcover. I've found one with leather cover and signatured by Rich Wilson. Having them both, I kept searching for an original hardcover from 2009. And that's what I found last week, so now I have three versions of this magnificent biography, two original from 2009, when Portnoy remains in the band... and the edited paperback version, where Mangini jointed.
I consider them to be treasures in my livingroom.

I bought the original when it was released (my name's in the book alongside many who post here, I assume). Got the updated paperback for Christmas a while back but haven't gotten around to reading the new stuff yet.
-
I didn't spend the money to get my name in the book. I thought it was a rip, honestly. But funny this thread got bumped because I literally pulled out my copy yesterday to read a passage.

Was it more $$ to get your name in the book? It was way too long ago for me to remember.

Man, how often I wish I was aware of them back in these days.
-
The only reason I myself bought the book was to get the cd with all the "rare" material. I really wanted Through Her Eyes (Titanic Mix) because it's a really great instrumental version of it. It's great for studying and getting stuff done around the house. Also, this was the cd that I discovered the awesome Don't Look Past Me. My name in the book I saw as an added bonus.

I think if you preordered, that was just one of the perks of the first addition.

That sounds about right, and yes, I preordered it.
-
No way I was spending that. Did it really shed any light on anything? I mean, The Score So Far pretty much covers it.
-
I have the book. It's a paperback and it definitely didn't cost me $80, more like around €20, I guess. I have the newest(?) version, released around 2014. It was a fun read and there's definitely some things in there that you would really read or hear otherwise. At least for me there was a fair share of 'new' information. It's been 7 years since I read it though.
-

There's TONS of stuff in the book that isn't in The Score So Far. And the Images volume was also awesome.
I get not wanting to pay $80 for it, but it was worth it to me.
-
80 bucks but you got TWO books. One is "Images" with a bunch of pictures and the other is "words" which was a high quality hardback. It came with a CD full of relatively rare stuff as well and it was all in a cool "shell" to house both books. And then of course you got your name in it, you got the book before anybody else, and you could always sell it for a shitload down the line.
Lots of new info. I've read fanzines, liner notes, interviews, and all that and I learned a ton.

Seriously, I never heard of this release before. And am darn curious. I have no idea how to put an image of my collection from my MacBook in this thread, if I had, I would place the editions I have right in here.

I have the same edition, I loved it back then, probably binge-read it all in a couple of days. There were some really spicy chapters regarding the recording of I&W & ACOS and the feud that went on between the band and producer David Prater. Prater trash-talking the band, accusing Kevin Moore of intentionally playing the wrong notes to sabotage him and insisting that Mike can't play drums, that's why he needed drum samples on I&W is just hilarious. :lol I read the book only once, but must have re-read those chapters half a dozen times. They alone are worth the price of admission.
My only gripe with the book was the last chapter about the Mangini-era. It was a later addition and feels really disjointed from the rest of the book. Reads more like a PR-release than a warts-and-all biography, as was the rest of the book.

1st edition was what i mentioned.
2nd edition with a few minor updates came out in hardback a little later.
3rd edition was paperback with an updated Mangini chapter but also took out the discography in the back if I remember correctly.
I have them all. I've got hoarding issues.

Anyone have the CD they'd want to sell? I have the songs, but in the interest of completeness, it's one of two things in the DT catalogue I feel I've missed (the other is the CD/Blu-ray set for Breaking The Fourth Wall).
-
I'll look Stads. I bought the first edition with my name in it. It's been ages since I opened the protective case and looked at it. I don't remember if I kept the CD in the book packaging or if it's in my collection. If I can find it, you can have it. I don't want any money. Gimme a couple days.
-
Huh, I can't find a CD. Did the original pressing of the book have a CD? I don't even remember. Been a long time. Sorry Stads.
-

I don't know what the release schedule was like; I got a copy later on, and there was no CD. I appreciate you looking; if you run across it, I'm not going anywhere. :) :)
-
FWIW—I also checked my 'first run' copy last night, and there was NO cd included. I have no memory of ever seeing a cd with it, but have seen others mention it over the years. Not sure what the details with getting it were...
-
It's inside the front cover of the Images book.
-
I never bought the book, but I remember it being promoted with the CD. And I've seen photos of the CD itself.

Wat.
No, the CD came with the first edition of the book - the one that had both the Images and Words volumes in a box set. I have no idea what "black book" you're talking about.
The box itself is red as are both volumes (Images and Words). The paper wrap that serves as a book cover for the Words volume has a simple black image with the ugly gray majesty symbol, and the paper wrap for the Images volume has a B/W photo of the band from a SC photoshoot.

No idea where RaiseTheKnife got their version of the truth from :lol

does anyone know how one can place an image in here, does it need to be uploaded somewhere else to take the url from? Because I would like to post my own books in here, to hear which versions I have. Because I have no idea anymore…
-
Because I would like to post my own books in here, to hear which versions I have. Because I have no idea anymore…
You can judge your books by their covers.
The latest edition, published in 2013, has a collage of DT artwork created by fellow forum-member SetlistScotty. It's the one currently featured in the book's official website: https://http://liftingshadows.com
The previous edition, from 2009, consists of the same band picture found in the Black Clouds & Silver Linings album. A special version of that edition comes in a red/bordeaux hardback cover.
The very first edition of Lifting Shadows came out in 2007, and consists of two books stacked inside a red box with the band's logo. One of the books, called Words, is Rich Wilson's biography, and its cover is a band pic from that era. (The other book is a collection of images.)
does anyone know how one can place an image in here, does it need to be uploaded somewhere else to take the url from?
I think it does. You can always upload it to a Google Drive or Dropbox folder.
-
Thanks Sebastián, I did uploaded it to Google Drive, but the mission hasn't been accomplished yet.

Sorry for it being a link, but it seems like I only miss the original release, which has the Images and Words-parts. I'll gonna be looking for that one in the near future.

Correct. What you have in your photo, are (from left to right):
• the Limited Edition (all text is exactly the same as the Classic Edition, including the appendix about side projects)
• the Classic Edition (all text is exactly the same as the Limited Edition, including the appendix about side projects)
• the Paperback Edition (the latest edition without any images nor the appendix on side projects)
What you still need is the Original Box Set Edition, which, if I recall correctly, is missing one or two chapters that Rich added for the Limited/Classic Editions. It does not have the appendix about the side projects. However, it came as 2 books housed in a matching box, and tucked away in the Images book (which featured photos from throughout the band's history) was the bonus CD.
Here's an old version of the website for reference:

Here's what the original box set looks like:

That's what I have and I got the band to sign certain images in that book.
JLB was very surprised, and said something similar to, "wow. I have never seen this yet." He was looking through it for a while before I told him to sign one pic. It was fun talking to them about the images. Fitting too how it was the I&W&B tour.

That's surprising - would've thought he would have gotten a complimentary copy from Rich, as I know each band member got a copy of the Limited Edition.
Funny that you mention you got the band to sign it. I brought the "Words" book with when I saw them in LA at the Progressive Nation 2008 show, and I had fun having not only the band, but also Rikk Feulner, Erik Neldner and Frank Solomon since they were all at the show, and of course Rich Wilson who had already signed it. Amusingly enough, JL wrote "Aren't you a part of this"
-
thank you Scotty, that seems like a must-have…
now there are 3 items on my wish-list…
- the books first release
- Images and Words vinyl
- artbook Distant Memories

Yeah, as usual, Scotty is right. Damn fine work on the Lifting Shadows collage as well Scotty.
My own version (the original 2007 double hardback with my name as a contributor) has the CD. I also had a few interesting looks from the guys when I had the hard-case signed in 2012 in DC. MM asked me if I really wanted him to sign it because he wasn't a part of any of the book's contents... I told him he was part of the family now and of course I wanted him to sign it! JP laughed a bit about that. I'm missing MP sig on the hard-case but that's OK, the books are for me and my wife and they'll not ever be sold if I can help it.

JLB was very surprised, and said something similar to, "wow. I have never seen this yet." He was looking through it for a while before I told him to sign one pic. It was fun talking to them about the images. Fitting too how it was the I&W&B tour.
He didn't say exactly that. It was more, let me see..."I haven't really seen this all yet." I think he was talking about the picture I had him sign.
I also had Mangini sign the back, and said it's because this was written before and having you're signature on the back is like, what is next to come.

This week I received the orginial Images & Words limited box set, with the cd involved. What a gorgious piece... I love they released this biography in four different versions, that's as prog-nerdy as it will ever get.
I also bought the original Live Scenes from New York cd with the twin towers sleeve, so basicly all my wishes are granted for now. All there's left is the release of #16.

Well, what you're saying implies that they came out with 4 different versions of the book at the same time, which isn't the case at all. There was the original version, an update that was released in a normal and deluxe version, and finally a second update that was released as a paperback.

but do you mean the original is the version with Images & Words books? If this is the original, it was already very exclusive and limited right from the get-go.

Correct.

IIRC it was somewhat limited, but not perhaps to the extent we might imagine. You'd have to ask Rich how many of the original book were published as I haven't a clue. But with all the people who pre-ordered it having the opportunity to get their names included in the book, you can get at least a rough idea.

Oh man, why didn't you call me back then? Wasn't aware of the band, but was probably around on a hiphop concert... I've searched for this beauty many, many months but even on Discogs it's truly rare. Only a couple for sale (for the highest price). All of their content is widely for sale, this truly is an exclusive piece.
I can only hope Rich will do a 'final chapter' when it's all over.

I'd like that and I would buy that. Still mat at myself for accidentally leaving my paperback on a plane so I never finished reading it.

You realize that version is still available and relatively inexpensive, especially compared to what Wim probably spent on the original version! :lol

:lol yeah, but I just dont want to buy it again when I know there's so much more to say since that last update.

Sure, but who knows when he's gonna update it again, if ever, or if someone else will take up the task? Besides, don't you want to have a copy of the book with that snazzy cover on it?

I have the original with my name included but I made a huge mistake and gave the CD away to somebody who really wanted it back at MP's forum. I never really listened to it so I figured why not give it to someone who really wants it. Now I kick myself because it devalues it so much. Oh welll...

I just bought a copy of the deluxe one with the CD and while I got a little lucky, it's still agonizing. ;) :)

The original release is not quite as pricey (VG is about £158/$200) on Discogs as I thought it might be. Although that's in the eye of the beholder, of course. That said, it's my most 'valuable' Dream Theater item, followed by the Scenes From A Memory vinyl release from 2011. Which is a little odd because the artwork on that release was rather poorly reproduced. Or am I thinking about Images? I'll have to look.
Edit: yeah, the reproduction of the Images & Words artwork is poor.

That sucks, but really it's not surprising. Several years ago, one of the guys from the old ToD fanclub contacted me about the cover art for LatM since they were doing a vinyl repressing of that. I think the image I had came from a scan of either the LatM CD or LiT videotape that I cleaned up. So that's what was used for that cover.
Plus, a while back I had gotten in contact with Larry Freemantle (the artist) hoping to be able to get the original digital files for the covers he did, but given the technology of the time, he didn't have them. Considering how irresponsible the labels seem to be with keeping everything documented and organized, I wouldn't be surprised if the original image files have been lost to time.
Fortunately, I got my hands on original album flats for all the releases up through SFaM (aside from LatM/LiT) so I was able to get pretty high quality scans from them, although obviously they're not as good as the original files.

I have the hardcover, but not the release with the CD. I actually wanted the CD most (to be a completist; I had the songs).

But weren't you around on the forums back then? It just surprises me that you wouldn't have snapped it up back then when it was new.

I bought the jumbo, super-deluxe, and my name's in it, but I recall it being quite pricey. The funny thing for me is that I didn't realize the CD was in there until about 5 years ago.
By the way, I wonder if anyone whose name is in the book has gone onto any degree of fame or notoriety (or infamy).

I was; I don't know. When did it come out? If I was going through my divorce then that might have had something to do with it.

I believe it was originally published in 2007.

I have the original with the cd, it also has my name in it. When they came to Albuquerque for the I&W&B tour, it was an easy choice for me to get the VIP and have them sign the Images section of the book.
It was great seeing their reactions to it, JLB in particular. I had them sign certain images from it and when I got to Mangini, I had him sign one of the blank pages at the end.
-
I finally got around to buying this book the other day. I'm looking forward to digging in here soon.

I do recall that initial version having a lot of spelling errors, typos, etc. I don't blame Rich for that. I'm assuming the book simply did not get the editing pass it needed from the publisher. Everything was totally fine in the paperback version.
-
I had the big Images and Words hardcovers. Sold them. Now I have the paperback standard. Hopefully Rich updates this at some point. Demand seems to be there.

Rich was gravely ill during the period of time that it was supposed to be edited, so unfortunately he was for the most part out of the picture during that stage of the writing. It's also why that ugly majesty symbol was embossed on the outside cover and the front cover of the "Words" book instead of using a proper version of it.

I seem to remember that the number was announced in the run up to the release. Don't remember what the number was but I think it was still available for short time after the pre-order period before it sold out. There's got to be a post around somewhere from that time with the details.
Ha! Totally forgot my name is in there!
I always pull out the regular hard cover version when I want to reread something because I try to limit my handling of the deluxe box. (Can't even remember the last time I got it out to play the CD.)

For some reason, $75 is stuck in my head for the original price which I thought was a little high at the time but the design is very nicely and creatively done.
-
These days $75 is pretty standard for oversized hardcovers, or a hardcover box set, like the original edition of the DT bio was. I really regret selling it years ago.

I've payed $325,- without package delivery costs for it last month. Fan-madness...
