Good choice on the new vocalist, although the song was unfortunately just as generic as the last album. The style is all there, and everything sounds great, but they haven't written anything distinctive in years now. I'll give the whole album a chance because I'm a fan, but I have low expectations after hearing this. I was hoping they'd change it up at least a little.
The last album was really disappointing. A shame cause I love Rise of the Tyrant. It seems Amott has tried intentionally to go back to a more Anthems and Doomsday style with the arrangements and melodies in this song, but it still sounds like what they have been doing. I do like this more than most of what the last albums delivered though.
This sounds pretty much identical to the last album to me, although I only bothered to listen to that once or twice. Very meh.
Rise of the Tyrant and Doomsday Machine both had a mix of great and average tracks for me, and Wages of Sin and Anthems of Rebellion are both excellent.
I don't find this new song or the last album bad in any way, because it's still the same style I love hearing from them, but maybe that's the problem. They've written so many great songs using that formula, that I think it's getting harder to write a new one that stands out as distinctive among those.
They've still got the fast riffs, the guitar melodies/harmonies, growls I enjoy, but it doesn't make me want to headbang and scream like a song such as We Will Rise or I Will Live Again does.
