Over the last few days...
Some revisits sparked by threads on DTF
Then some other stuff:
- Blind Guardian is growing a little with further listens, but I feel the second half drops quite a bit in quality - favorite songs at the moment: Damnation and Secrets of the American Gods.
- Megadeth is very, very good.
- Ocean of Grief - Nightfall's Lament: a nice slab of death/doom from 2018. It doesn't have a ton of variation, but the mood/atmosphere is great. Fantastic guitar melodies - they remind me a bit of Enshine...
- Replicant - Malignant Reality: this is pretty cool. It's death metal with some dissonant stuff going on, but it can groove too. Great riffs. It starts to blend towards the end, and the howling vocals can be, um, an acquired taste, but it's an album I enjoyed from last year
- Cellar Darling - This is the Sound: I love their more recent album, The Spell, and for some reason I hadn't gotten around to hearing their previous one yet. While it might not have the same "conceptual depth", it's very good too. They have a pretty unique "something" about them.
- Spirit Adrift - Divide the Darkness: My favorite album from them. It's where, for my taste, the doom and classic metal components of their music have the best balance. Great songs (and a few nods to some classics - Bark at the Moon, For Whom the Bell Tolls...?)
