I didn't really like the last Deafheaven album, and this is way better anyway.

That's a pretty low bar, though. :P

This is true. I have a sure fire way to determine whether I will like a certain album. I ask my "Does this album sound in anyway like a Morrisey record?". If the answer is no then chances are I'll like it. Unfortunately Infinite Granite was unable to pass this simple test.

:lol

I'm listening to it again for the first time since like, the month it came out. I think it could have been an okay album if the vocalist didn't sound asleep the entire time.

Yea it was one of last years low points.

Trying out a few thrash gems now.

Both amazing albums. I went to school with Derek Sykes of Hammer   :metal

Is that the one with Epidemic of Violence on it? One of the greatest thrash songs.

That would be the title track of their second album. Relentless thrash brutality on that one!

Personally their demo Necrology is their best. I wish that demo was pressed on CD.

That Artillery album is so amazing and underrated.  Fucking riff after riff.

This is an amazing song. I just finished listening and man that was an amazing journey.

The last 10 min. is so awesome and it reprises a melody that I loved in the middle part of the song.

Nice, I'll queue this up for later. Just starting through today's new releases. First up, Banefyre by Crippled Black Phoenix.

OK, so this was a loooong album, clocking in over an hour and a half, but it feels like a bit of a return to form for the band. I wasn't too into their previous album but this was positive, although a lot to digest.

Next up is the new Holy Fawn record, Dimensional Bleed.

Over the last few days...

Some revisits sparked by threads on DTF

Then some other stuff:

- Blind Guardian is growing a little with further listens, but I feel the second half drops quite a bit in quality - favorite songs at the moment: Damnation and Secrets of the American Gods.
- Megadeth is very, very good.
- Ocean of Grief - Nightfall's Lament: a nice slab of death/doom from 2018. It doesn't have a ton of variation, but the mood/atmosphere is great. Fantastic guitar melodies - they remind me a bit of Enshine...
- Replicant - Malignant Reality: this is pretty cool. It's death metal with some dissonant stuff going on, but it can groove too. Great riffs. It starts to blend towards the end, and the howling vocals can be, um, an acquired taste, but it's an album I enjoyed from last year
- Cellar Darling - This is the Sound: I love their more recent album, The Spell, and for some reason I hadn't gotten around to hearing their previous one yet. While it might not have the same "conceptual depth", it's very good too. They have a pretty unique "something" about them.
- Spirit Adrift - Divide the Darkness: My favorite album from them. It's where, for my taste, the doom and classic metal components of their music have the best balance. Great songs (and a few nods to some classics - Bark at the Moon, For Whom the Bell Tolls...?)

Wow, thanks for the rec, this sounds excellent!  :tup

I started it just to sample it and, well, I listened to the whole thing  :) I mean, there is a lot to digest in that it's really one long song, but it actually doesn't sound pretentious (which sometimes can be the case with this type of albums). There's a ton of beautiful melodies in here, and the right amount of brutality. Great stuff, I'll definitely revisit.

This really was quite the journey. Lots of Queen parallels, as well as video game music nods. Good stuff, cheers dude

This is definitely going to be one of the better albums this year.  "Galleries of Morbid Artistry" was especially a highlight, some gnarly riffs as well as some really engaging clean passages serendipitously uncharacteristic of them.

The biggie today was of course the new Megadeth, and to a lesser extent, the new Blind Guardian. Hit them each three times at work today and then the Megadeth again after work.

But one album released today that I am loving is this:

I got into Trial with their 2017 album Motherless, which...let's just say is unique. But their new album Feed The Fire has a much more classic metal sound.

Just one listen in, I enjoyed the heck out of the Megadeth album, while Blind Guardian unfortunately didn't grab me as much. Will revisit for sure, but I'm afraid it will be another one that won't really stick. Haven't been a gigantic fan of the last couple from them, At the Edge of Time and Beyond the Red Mirror. This one is a bit different, for sure, but I haven't felt it has that BG "magic" either. Don't know, we'll see...hope it grows...

Trial intrigues me...haven't heard a single note from the band yet, what is your pitch?

Tim - I finally got to this. I'm loving it!  :tup

I thought it was going to be more predictably "classic metal" but, while that's the blueprint for sure, there's something more to it...between the vocals and the production, there's a super-cool vibe throughout. And it gets more and more epic as it progresses.

I'll have to check out the rest too. I see Motherless is available, but Vessel (their debut?) is not.

Awesome Nick!!

I am actually not familiar with Vessel.

Motherless is its own animal. It is quite interesting and needs to be taken as a whole album.

Feed The Fire is way more accessible, but still a great listen.
