No one else is currently drumming for them.  Therefore, he is the current drummer for them.  It is correct.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I know, but when he was in DT, he was their current drummer as well, right? ;)

I guess with no emphasis as to whether he is the permanent or temporary drummer is what threw me off at first.

Technically, yes, but it probably would have just said "drummer," since that was his permanent gig.

It's OK.  You're a math guy, not an English guy.

I'm a maths guy and I still understood. I think it's more that he's a jamesman guy that's the problem.

...but seriously, I guess it's also because I haven't read through a lot of the content on this site about all the speculation, I thought maybe MP left DT for A7X. But I just read that he didn't from his facebook, so...dang. I should go read through the thousands of posts on here.

Dang.

Yes, and what does Derek know? Frankly, I think and I HOPE MP won't be back with DT. A new chapter for everyone. BTW, if they let him come back, he will have won.

He will be back only to play the entire AA saga as a guest performance in an upcoming DVD. That's the only scenario.

Yes, and what does Derek know?

Derek knows what it's like to be in Dream Theater, then replaced by "the one they really wanted" after one album.  He's predicting that the same thing will happen to the new drummer, based on his own experience.  His opinion/prediction is at least as valid as anyone else's, probably more.

Yes, and what does Derek know?

Yeah, it's pretty obvious if you read the article that he is just speculating, as we all are.  He obviously knows the personalities better than any of us, since he spent years with the guys, but beyond that, he's an outsider to all this just as the rest of us are.  I mean, he says "this is Mike's band."  Um...no, it's not.  Mike's not even in the band.  Mike has no control over what DT does at any point in the future other than the ability to pick up the phone and ask nicely.

BTW, if they let him come back, he will have won.

???  He won't have "won" or lost anything.  It's not a contest.

He will be back only to play the entire AA saga as a guest performance in an upcoming DVD. That's the only scenario.

I highly doubt that will happen.

I doubt it too, but in my eyes, this will be the only way/time that Mike will return to the band, and only for one, or a handful of shows.

I think he will be back just not for a long while, maybe a few albums in. But if not then that's ok with me i'd still enjoy what he and DT will put out

God, I hope not. To me, the best part of him leaving the band is that we won't have to hear that thing played in its entirety. I liked a few of the songs very much, but not enough to warrant the others being played.

Just sort of trying to piece things together based on JP's comments in the reference thread and the recent developments on MP's forum and so on.  I didn't mean to make it sound like I have inside info cause I don't, but my perspective on the situation has changed since the first week.  Most of it is because of JP's posts which have really helped out a lot.  Yes, it is still kind of shocking in a way, but my mind is more at ease now and I can start to understand how the band members are feeling about/coping with the situation.  I'm really starting to look at it in a more positive way.

Here's what I think:

JP said they aren't looking for a temporary replacement.  If that weren't true, he wouldn't have said it.  JP seems like a straight shooter to me.  He wouldn't be spending time, answering questions and giving misinformation.

With that being said, I think Portnoy could return under one - and, only one - condition:  the new drummer isn't working out and Portnoy wants to come back at the same time.  I don't believe for a second that, had DT been in love with Derek overall, they would have replaced him with Jordan.  I think the only reason they kicked out Derek and had Jordan was because they weren't pissing their pants over Derek to begin with.  That's obviously just speculation, but I think it's at least a fair speculation considering what happened with Falling into Infinity and all that.  I think they wanted to go into a heavier, more shreddy direction, Derek wasn't the right player and Jordan became available.

That COULD happen with a drummer.

Now that Obama has closed Gitmo, when will he turn his attention to the abuses and torturing of the onions that are used to make the angry whopper?
