Welcome and salutations guys and goils!
_floyd productions is proud to present the 2011 edition of what shall herein on a perennial basis be known as:
WHO'S THE BEST THEM?!?!?
This delightful extravaganza will determine which band is the forum's favorite outside of Dream Theater. Last year Pink Floyd won an exciting final against Porcupine Tree (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=11756.0) and both should probably continue a strong showing this year since they remain DTF darlings. I'll try to avoid this OP getting much longer than it needs to be and cover as much as necessary to avoid confusion and make this thing as fun as it was last year, perhaps more funner.
What are/is the rules/format?
Pretty simple. Vote for your three favorite bands from the list of 207 that were contributed by a wonderful lot of future world leaders, Rhodes scholars, necromancers, luminaries, larcenists, and jaded shutins we like to refer to as the dreamtheaterforums.org community (DTF for short for those who may be new to our humble e-Abode.)
Each round will be 3 days EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST WHICH WILL BE 7 DAYS so I and hopefully some of my wonderful DTF friends can send messages to anyone who contributed their nominations to this thing but may not currenly be active on this forum. It's been about two months since the nomination phase ended and I PM'ed several dozen members that played along in last year's tournament to let them know I'd be running it again this year and didn't want them to miss out. But, like I said, that was two months ago and many of them have had ample time to forget so this first round going for 7 days will give me time to get ahold of them and time for them to hopefully realize they've received the PM about it.
The narrowing of the field will be loosely based on the powers of 2 in descending fashion (round of 128, then 64, then 32 and so on) but all bands tied at the cutoff point will advance to the next round. For instance, if we were in the round of 64 and trying to narrow it down to 32 but had a 10-way tie at #29, then all bands from #29-38 would advance to the round of "32."
The results will be visible at the conclusion of each round. I'm not a fan of doing it that way but the issue is that some people intentionally will forsake the rule of voting for their favorite bands that are available at the time if they realize those bands have no chance of making it to the next round and then just vote for their favorite bands out of the ones that have a decent chance of advancing which defeats the whole purpose of the original rule "Vote for your three favorite bands."
I need y'all to help me if some of you can be so kind.
Like I said earlier in this post, it's been two months since everyone made their nominations for this tournament and we had over 100 members contribute and I'd hate for any of them to miss it on account of my failing to start this thing in a more timely manner so once this thing's been going on for two days I'm gonna check my list of all whom contributed to this and cross off any who've already voted and then try to contact all of the ones whom seem to be unaware of the fact that the tournament finally started. I'd gladly do it all by myself but I ran into the problem that the forum is programmed to only let you send a certain amount of PM's per hour so I'd literally be tied up for hours if I tried to fly solo on this.
Anyone that is kind enough to be willing to help me can do so by PM'ing me or simply posting in this thread which I'll be following closely and then I'll supply them with a pre-typed body of text they can simply copy/paste into a PM. There will only need to be like 50-80 tops by my estimate so if even eight people can help me by sending out like five PM's on two separate occasions we can get this all done very efficiently.
All that aside, I now beg of you...

Edit #1: A decent bit of posts have been made saying something along the lines of "Why wasn't *insert band name* included?!?" Simple. Because they weren't nominated during the extravagantly long two-week period I left the thread for nominations open. I already covered it in an earlier post but reading a two-page thread is apparently asking far too much of some folks so I decided to make it clear right here. It'd be very nice to not have to keep seeing posts like this so I'll thank y'all in advance for hopefully making no more of those kinds of posts.

Thanks pals :) Like I said in the OP, I'm gonna let the first two days of this round go by before beginning to contact those that submitted nominations for this so as to avoid sending out PM's that aren't necessary but on either Monday or Tuesday I'll either PM you all, and anyone else who's kind enough to join us, and provide y'all with an already-typed body of text to simply copy/paste into a PM and then just have y'all send that out to ten people each or I'll edit the OP to include the body of text.
I'm thinking the most sensible way to make sure we get all of the 100 or so contributors contacted is to have those whom are sending the PM's do five at a time (since the forum's system wouldn't let me send more than 10 per hour) so they'll still have 5 PM's available for their own personal use during each of the hours that they're helping. The best way to do it in order to avoid accidentally spamming members inboxes with multiple PM's would probably be to post which five members you're PMing each time BEFORE you do it and then, once you've successfully sent the PM's, just go back to that post and edit in something like "Edit: successfully sent :metal " (you don't actually have to include the headbang emote :P ) I'll post the entire list of whom we need to PM in the OP right around the time we need to start sending the PM's out.

They are pretty damn good judging from the only track of theirs I've ever heard, Blessed Be Thy Hate. I made a thread where everyone was able to nominate five bands of their choice back in August or September and let it run for about two weeks so everyone did get a fair chance but sorry you missed out. If I ever see you in real life, I'll buy you a Yoo-Hoo and a bag of Jack Link's beef jerky to make it up to you (black pepper and teriyaki are your only choices since I'm buying so just be grateful.)

Nah, I made the thread right here in General Music. Polls/Survivors may have been a more fiiting home for it but we probably would've had a significantly smaller turnout if I'd done it there. GMD is the second busiest subforum here with like 171K posts and General Discussion has 176K posts so there's only about a 3% difference between those two either way.
A few other factors were that this is where I made last year's tournament and we hed something like 115 people voting per round at one point and 96 voted in the final. P/S is so much more of a fringe subforum that I doubted we'd get anywhere close to that kind of response over there since some people, like myself in the past, won't go there for weeks at a time or seldom at all if there are no running survivors for bands they're into and knowledgable on.
The final factor was that I felt that it'd be nearly impossible for anyone who's remotely active on the forum to go two whole weeks without checking into GMD and also during that time it was on page 1 for a good 90% of the time.

This. I would have been lazy and made a threshold of needing X votes to even get a spot in the first round. Without pissing on anyones leg, we can all pick out the bands that don't have a chance in the world. Hell, many of them are going to lose to a band that doesn't even exist (that would be Thundersword).
I just want everyone to have fun. It's quite easier for you to spend 3-5 minutes looking through a conveniently alphabetized list of 207 bands than it is for me to spend 8 hours compiling the first round roster for this thing (4 hours tabulating the original list for this thing, 2 hours typing in all the bands for this thing into the OP followed by checking to make sure that I had no repeats/missed bands only to have my computer randomly power off when I was 80% of the way through my proofreading pass, then an additional 90-120 minutes to retype that OP from scratch except for the miraculous auto-save that made the first 99 out of the 207 bands pop up after only typing their first letter into each option box on the retype pass.)
There is literally no way I could possibly do this that would satisfy everyone so I really have virtually no tolerance for anyone griping about something I've done in the most thorough, please-everyone way I could possibly imagine. Seriously, there are like 785,866 other threads out there for people to pick apart if you're looking for something to gripe about.

Actually, what led to me doing this thing on such a big scale was people taking such exception to me trying to do it in the exact same, more streamlined way y'all were suggesting in the first place so I definitely agree with y'all to a substantial extent ;) Last year I made a poll that included this lineup I think:

and maybe a couple others that I can't remember at this moment but we weren't even five replies in before vitriolic falcons descended upon the thread with some very critical reactions to having "such a limited" list of bands and the whole wave of "OHMYFUKEENGAWD!!!! WHY AINT DEEZ GAIZ AWN TEH LIST?!?!?!?!ĹJERWGAR56486E"-type posts piled up pretty quickly which led me to build the entire thing from the ground up. I held polls for at least two days each for folks to decide on the following factors:
*How many bands each member could nominate
*How long each round would last
*How many bands each member could vote for in a given round
and there may have been another poll or two that I can't recall as of now. Basically, my prevailing sentiment was that if people had a problem with how I was doing it then I'd put the people in charge and let democracy reign supreme. I look back on some of my posts in here and realize I may have gotten a tad defensive about things but I just wanted to set the record straight and wanted people to realize that my hands were somewhat tied by the inescapable reality that there's no possible way that the 100+ members participating in this thing could ever reach unanimity on even one detail let alone even reach something like an 80% majority on all the involved details so I just really would feel much better if everyone could understand this and realize there is virtually no more I possibly could've done to honor everyone's wishes. And that last sentence is in general as I know ytse and killer kimland were only looking out to save me trouble.

Is there anyway with polls that you can limit which posters get to vote?
IE: Only nominating people can vote. If you didn't nominate anyone, you shouldn't be able to swoop in and say vote consistently for or against a band.

Okay, I'm ready to begin contacting all the members that participated in the nominations thread but haven't posted in this thread yet in order to make sure (as stated in the OP) that the two-month delay in starting this tournament doesn't cause them to miss out.
A few instructions on how to do this to make it as easy as possible for those helping as well as avoiding accidental spamming of members through unintentionally having multiple people PM'ing the same member:
1. This post will have a list of all the members we need to contact
2. This post will also include a pre-typed private message explaining why the member is being contacted. This way y'all can simply copy/paste it into a PM and only have to worry about making sure the usernames are entered character-perfect in the "To:" box of the PM. It's probably easier to simply send a mass PM to five members at once instead of having to make five separate PMs.
3. The way we're avoiding the spam issue is by making sure that when you intend on contacting people, you:
First, post the names of the five members you're planning on contacting.
Next, send out the PMs.
Last, go back and edit your original post with something like "Edit: Successfully sent."
The message to send will follow this format:
To: [five different members. Do it in this format: "name #1, name #2,..." So that means type in a member's name followed by a comma with no space before the comma but one space after it, then the next member's name and so on] The PMs may not be properly delivered if the names aren't perfectly entered so to insure the accuracy of the names simply copy/paste them from the list near the end of this post into the "Search For Members" field that can be accessed as follows...
Hover the cursor over the "Members" button which is just to the left of the "Logout" button, click on "Search For Members", paste the name from the list into that field and search it, copy/paste that name into the "To:" field of the PM.

The first round of this year's installment is now underway and I'd be glad to have you back again as this year the list of bands is nearly twice as big as last year's (207!) and the turnout seems a little bigger as well compared to last year's opening round.

I really appreciate all of your help since I've already spent way longer than I thought it would take just to get to this point and the thought of having to do this for 66 more names (after the first five I took on a test drive to make sure my mass PM'ing skills were up to par) is beyond unappealing at this point. Is there anyway with polls that you can limit which posters get to vote?
IE: Only nominating people can vote. If you didn't nominate anyone, you shouldn't be able to swoop in and say vote consistently for or against a band.

I don't think the forum's software is that sophisticated but I could be wrong. Your point has some merit but I don't wanna exclude people since the basis for this was for everyone to come together and have fun since the actual point of it is to find out the favorite band of the whole forum with Dream Theater removed from the equation. I do get where you're coming from, however, since it ain't that hard for someone to merely post 5 bands but the counter to that is that this forum has a shitload of lurkers whom have never posted but they are in some very subtle way a part of our community and some of them end up posting on a regular basis even in some cases after years of lurkin' off.
I do appreciate your input no matter what though.

Also, a suggestion. Given that many people are kind of saying: "well, its going to be x, y, z, a, b & c" as the top whatever, you could almost run a couple of tiers to the competition..? So you've got the top tier which is going to be the obvious ones, but then run something like WHO'S THE REST THEM?!?!? excluding those obvious picks and excluding bands that, say, don't get a minimum number of votes.
IDK, could be interesting.

Not a bad idea by any means but I feel like if we were to deviate from the format we currently have, then it'd probably be most fair to let everyone vote on all the important options as to how it's run since it would almost imply that I value one member's input over the sum of all others' by tweaking it to satisfy one member's wishes without comprehensively consulting the community.

Thanks pals :) Like I said in the OP, I'm gonna let the first two days of this round go by before beginning to contact those that submitted nominations for this so as to avoid sending out PM's that aren't necessary but on either Monday or Tuesday I'll either PM you all, and anyone else who's kind enough to join us, and provide y'all with an already-typed body of text to simply copy/paste into a PM and then just have y'all send that out to ten people each or I'll edit the OP to include the body of text.
I'm thinking the most sensible way to make sure we get all of the 100 or so contributors contacted is to have those whom are sending the PM's do five at a time (since the forum's system wouldn't let me send more than 10 per hour) so they'll still have 5 PM's available for their own personal use during each of the hours that they're helping. The best way to do it in order to avoid accidentally spamming members inboxes with multiple PM's would probably be to post which five members you're PMing each time BEFORE you do it and then, once you've successfully sent the PM's, just go back to that post and edit in something like "Edit: successfully sent :metal " (you don't actually have to include the headbang emote :P ) I'll post the entire list of whom we need to PM in the OP right around the time we need to start sending the PM's out.

Correct. I ran a little thread where anyone could stop by and throw in their five bands of choice and after about two weeks I had it locked. I understand there's a difference between what your absolute favorite bands are and what your favorite bands are out of what's available on this list but lots of folks are participating whom didn't know about the nomiantion thread any way so don't let that hold you back.

Alrighty folks. I just got home from my saturday closing shift and am beat. It'll probably take me a good hour or two to tabulate the results of this which I plan on doing tomorrow afternoon so at the latest, we should be starting the round of 128 some time late afternoon or evening tomorrow. Also thanks a whole hell of a lot to all of you for voting since I think we only had 115 people voting during the busiest round last year and had 160 for this opening round which, by my alcohol-and-work-fatigue-induced hazy mental math, means a 39% increase in votership. Great job guys and goils!

We started with 207. The next logical step seemed to be 128 since I was going with a "halving the field" concept. 64 would've meant clearing out 69.1% of the field after 1 round. I'd rather let the swing votes have the loosest shits coupled with the guffawingest giggles :)

The narrowing of the field will be loosely based on the powers of 2 in descending fashion (round of 128, then 64, then 32 and so on) but all bands tied at the cutoff point will advance to the next round. For instance, if we were in the round of 64 and trying to narrow it down to 32 but had a 10-way tie at #29, then all bands from #29-38 would advance to the round of "32."
