Title: Mice
Post by: kaos2900 on November 19, 2015, 06:34:31 AM
We had a couple of mice get in our garage. Surprisingly in my 31 years of life this is the first time I've had to deal with the little vermin. Any tips to trap these guys?

Mouse traps.  Use peanut butter, they love that shit.

I like the flat glue style traps.  Put a small cracker in the middle.

I prefer the traps that allow you to release them into the wild.

Not me; in the Northeast, this is a common occurrence.  I can't remember a house I've lived in that didn't have a mouse at one time or another.   And the closer you are to an open field, then more likely.  Use the peanut butter as advised, and remember that they come in families.  If you want to try to release them, you are only really compounding the problem (unless you can get a box of them and take them somewhere else).

Surprisingly, I've never once had a mouse in the house after 26 years in CT. I grew up around old farmland with plenty of open space as well as woods. I saw field mice all the time. I used to try and catch them as a kid. Never had one actually end up inside. Oddly enough, we managed to get a rabbit in the house once. Bats were pretty common though. I guess those are like flying mice.

this....and if you stick a piece of dog/cat food or a piece of pretzel in it......that will prevent them from cleaning the trap without getting killed. It just guarantees they'll set the trap off.

Ehh....I get the sentiment behind this Brian but when it comes to mice/rats and how destructive they can actually be once/if they set up camp in your attic/walls....I prefer to eliminate them permanently.

Nah, they are vermin, and no better on the pest scale than ants, wasps, or mosquitoes.  Kill them all.

Agreed. I only like the release ones because I'm a pussy don't like looking at the thing dead with a broken neck or starved to death on a piece of glue paper. I don't have a problem with the animal dying, I just don't like being the one to do it, or the thought that it may have been fighting for it's life for days before finally calling it quits. If the cat gets a hold of one, you'll find no complaints from me.

I totally believe you, but that floors me.  I grew up in Monroe - a farm town then - and we had a "mouser" that would bring mice almost daily.  Not always from our house, but from the neighborhood.

We were the house's first owners. So when I was a kid, it was still less than a decade old. Maybe that had something to do with it?

The area I grew up had a lot of hawks, owls, coyotes, bob cats, and wild house cats. They may have kept the population is check to a higher degree than surrounding areas. In addition to the bats in the attic, we used to have huge problems with spiders and carpenter bees. The bees destroyed the entire front of our house (wood siding, not vinyl) in just two or three years. All the shutters and window frames more or less rotted away in no time. My parents now have the exterior of the house sprayed every spring to keep them away.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Hopefully tomorrow I'll have confirmed kill. Going to try peanut butter with the pretzel idea.

Also, we have a cat and I have zero faith that he would have the balls to kill a mouse.

Wow. Does the cat have access to the garage? Normally the mere presence is enough to keep rodents away. Our shop cat is too fat and lazy at this point to be a good mouser, but the fact that she's here has been adequate deterrence (and we butt up against a half acre compost heap).

No we don't let him the garage. He only occasionally gets to go out on the deck. This guy gets scared when leaf blows in front of him.

Well, not all cats are mousers. Still, I'd be surprised if rats wanted to be anyplace with a cat around, mouser or not.

Wouldn't that be the best?! :lol

Our boy is the mice splitter. I found rats torn in two at least 5 times.

Lucky you. Out of the dozen or so my cat has managed to get I have one and half confirmed kills, the other half coming from my shoe accidently. Fucker just brings them into my bedroom and drops it on the floor like I have nothing better to do at 3AM than eat a mouse.

Our first cat, brought a dead mouse to our bed.  I woke up, thought it was the toy mouse and grabed a warm, mushy dead mouse.   :lol

We had a dog in the neighborhood that used to bring us fresh deer legs.

I have never had a mouse problem, but I had a couch in my parents garage that I moved into my apartment 5 or so years ago.  When we moved the couch, we found a dead mouse under it.  Didn't think too much about it as my parents knew there were mice in the garage before.  Well after we moved, that first night, we saw a mouse run out from under that couch and into the kitchen.  Obviously it has moved with the couch.  Set up a mouse trap with peanut butter that night and in the morning the problem was solved.  I now have a cat who watches over the house, but I have not had a mouse problem since then.  Also the cat helps with bugs too.

Don't forget about the good ole fashioned pellet guns. I bought one for the shop, but never got the opportunity to cap one. If you really want to be a badass, get a cheap blowgun. Then you really feel manly.

Id be worried about cleaning up the guts.  Even my mouse trap left some blood on the floor which for me is disgusting, I can't deal with blood.

This is good idea, usually there are more than one.

In our last rental we caught 5 mice in traps before we called the exterminator who set up bait traps - nothing after that.

I fucking hate mice and rats.  I'm a fairly big dude, but those things make me shiver and squeal like a wee baby.

The old office building I used to work in had a mouse infestation the last winter the company was located there.  Luckily I never saw one (or traces of one) for myself, but several of my coworkers would come in and have mouse shit on their desks.  Our accounting manager found mouse piss in the paper tray of her printer.  Our shipping manager had one come out from under her desk at her and she shrieked so loud I swear they heard in the next building over.   :lol

We called the landlord/exterminator and that helped for sure.  Ultimately we just moved buildings though (not because of the mice, but because we had severely outgrown the space we were in).

Other than traps, preventing access is key. Walk around the outside of your house. If you have a crawl space check there too. Mice can squeeze through a hole the diameter of a dime. Fill voids around pipes, electrical or cable lines, or weep holes, or cracks with steel wool. This will keep them out.

I worked in the 'cart barn' at a private golf country club in high school. All the carts and member golf bags were stored there and we'd prep the carts and what not for the next morning/days tee times. Anyway, it was a large barn essentially kind of back out of the way in the woods among a couple other structures.

The two things there were a lot of were ferrel cats and freaking mice/rats. To EB's point.....we had a pellet gun with a scope and we'd have competitions shooting mice/rats. I couldn't even offer a guess at how many of those I blew away.

But, one of the cooler things we did was after someone had a good(lucky) headshot on a larger mouse/rat.....we'd put it in a cup of water.....put it in the freezer then the next day it'd be frozen in a clear block of ice. It looked pretty neat actually all gnarled up and as it'd freeze the blood and what not would float and ultimately just get frozen in a suspended position of sorts.

Keeping them out is certainly the key. However, there are more places than you could imagine for them to sneak in. I read an article down here about a pest control specialist, and he works on a flat fee. You pay him 5 grand and he secures your house, offering a lifetime guarantee that you'll see no more rats. To do that he and a couple of guys spend a full day sealing up every single Point of Entry there is. Majorly time consuming. That's crawling around in the crawlspace. Sealing up the roof and all of the overhangs. Didn't really seem like something and amateur could accomplish.

Yeah, no kidding  :lol ....it was a pretty fun job actually. There were lots-o-shenanigans that were had. The evening shift was all of us high school kids and the morning shift was a group of retired St. Louis City Firemen. Lots of pranks and lots of good memories.

Well, since Thursday night I've caught 6 mice. I've since plugged where they were getting in. There can't be many left. Hopefully.
