Beating the Odds is a decent-enough song, but the near-opening keyboard solo/riff is very capital-P Prog. It's Clive Nolan or Mark Kelly levels of prog.

A friend of mine after listening to the album sent me this message that I totally agree with:

Over-all, it is undeniably an LTE record. There's a youthful playfulness in a lot of the songs that really harkens back to their first two albums over twenty years ago, and they still have the chops as well! Beyond the technical things, there's a lot of great melodies on here as well. One that stuck out was "Shades Of Hope", which sounds like a bit of "The Best Of Times", "Six Degrees", and "State Of Grace" (of course, being another John/Jordan piece). I was surprised by the fade-out at the end of "Beating The Odds", and the drum-fade at the end of "Chris & Kevin's Amazing Odyssey". The one improv on the album is pretty short, surprisingly, and it really reminds me of "Osmosis", mostly due to Jordan's key sounds and the over-all vibe the piece has. Honestly, you could probably dissect each song and say it's a bit of one or more of their past songs, but it's just the four of them trying to recreate the magic they had back then, and I think for the most part, they succeed. After about 2 or 3 spins, it's really good, and I think it fits right in with the best of their work! And as a fan of "Three Minute Warning", I am excited to hear that bonus disc when I get my artbook in late March (or April, if the postal service continues the way it has been).

Did MP just throw in his ITPOE fill during the ITPOE sounding section. I don't think it'd sound as much like ITPOE if he did something different besides that. 

Beating The Odds, isn't bad at all, and sounds like the name suggests. This one though is exactly what I expected when I was talking about the influences and the sounds they acquired since the last album.

Even though he is clearly audible, anyone else getting the feeling there is not as much Tony Levin on these 2 tracks?

I noticed that, too.   You could hear him just fine, but it felt like he was just kind of there on both songs. 

That said, I did like this new song, and it's not like all four guys have to crush it on every single song.  I just want a lot more Tony Levin bad assery than we have gotten on the first two songs.

I love the new one. I’ve seen a few people aren’t that keen on it, but I think I enjoy it more than The Passage of Time. The slower parts where it breaks down to JP’s melodic lines give me chills.

Both songs are growing on me quite a bit.  I was left a little cold by Petrucci’s melodic moments initially (which is usually my favourite part of his playing) but starting to appreciate them more as time has gone on.

Reviewer lost a lot of credibility once he said a Sons of Apollo record was one of his favorites record of the past decade , but interesting review nonetheless.  I have to say I am not thrilled that so much of the new record is spent on a cover tune, but I still can't wait to hear this whole thing.

I suppose if you don't want to keep the cover on your playlist, there is another whole disc of improv jams you could substitute from in place of RIB. It seems there are less improv jams on this album than the first two (by my count, it seems two or three - Liquid Evolution, and the two duets, though I've read that the Jordan/John one was rehearsed and then recorded in one take, so they definitely had some idea of what they wanted to play).

I honestly don't mind that they recorded RIB for the album. It definitely gives folks a chance to listen to it if they've never got the live stuff or even bothered to find it on YouTube to watch/listen to, so for some fans, it'll be their first time experiencing their version of the Gerswhin classic.

At least we can rest knowing that the label has contracted them to do a fourth album, so hopefully that'll come out before the end of the decade, though if we're lucky, we may get the album in 2022 and have back-to-back year releases just like the first two albums!
