Here's your update about the first matchup listening: it's going strong! I recognize all the songs from both submissions now, and I've got some coherent thoughts about both compilations. Both of them aren't great, but both have their moments. I'm leaning slightly towards one of them right now, but I'm still not sure—this is difficult. I think I may post some impressions tomorrow and push the first result to Saturday instead. Or I may just post it tomorrow if I feel confident enough in my judgement. As I said, this round is going to take a bit more time. I'm aiming for this round to be done at the end of next week.

Thank you for being patient, guys. I'll definitely deliver something tomorrow, whether it's the impressions for the first matchup or the actual results.

Updated.

So guys, while I was focusing on the two compilations, I also have been sneakily listening to another random two compilations (not to the next matchup, but just to the random two compilations to kinda add the diversity to my everyday listening), and so these impressions apply to half of the entries I've got.

There are four kinds of the impressions:

  • The positive side of the whole compilation
  • The negative side of the whole compilation
  • The thoughts on my (probably) favourite song from your submission
  • The thoughts on my (probably) least favourite song from your submission

With that, have those sixteen tidbits mixed between each other:

1. I will say one thing for this compilation: these guys certainly know how to write those kickass guitar riffs because holy shit, almost every song here has a riff that belongs in the riffs’ hall of fame if such thing even exists.

2. The whole compilation suffers from a few songs that are just, well, there. I’m not sure if it will change with more listens, but some of the songs are just either too safe, or too unmemorable to make any lasting impression.

3. The way the quiet, calmer sections—sometimes even acoustic ones, and I know, I can’t believe it either—intertwine with the incredibly good parts that heavily remind me of Haken’s Initiate except heavier, damn, this song is something to live for. Best song from your compilation and also somewhere in the nine-ish spectrum, this is rich and fabulous.

4. Not only I found this song a bit boring, I honestly thought that was a fabulous material for a misheard video—then I searched for the lyrics and they were pretty much what I’ve heard in the song.

5. I think my problem with this is that I’m not into happy music—even if the music only sounds happy while the lyrical message is bitter. Give me minor chords over the major ones most of my days. And this compilation has a lot of happy sounding songs.

6. Not only this uses one of the most boring templates for a song—repeat the same parts over and over with increased intensity—but it also manages to use quite a dull vocal melody which is honestly a bit annoying as far as I’m concerned. This song sticks out like a sore thumb on otherwise quite polished—even though not quite that impressive so far—compilation.

7. This compilation serves as a proof these guys know how to write freaking fantastic melodies, and also freaking fantastic song endings—one buildup and payoff in particular is one of my early favourites in this round. And so the question arises: why do they so rarely employ that particular talent of theirs?

8. This kind of feels like older Helloween with someone like Kiske doing the high vocals, Deris doing the lower, menacing parts, and both Hansen and Weikath are playing dirtier than usual and more riff-oriented.

9. I love a lot of acoustic stuff, and I won’t lie, this compilation has a few songs that tickle that sweet spot.

10. This song is… just there, and then it gets to the chorus which is where I begin to wish it didn’t exist. And it’s also over five damn minutes. If you take into account that a lot of songs from your compilation are at least enough to make an impression—even if it’s not a positive one—I just wish you didn’t include this one.

11. Honestly, I think yours might be the best ending song out of all compilations. It hits just the right amount of sweetness and musicianship to nail the mood it’s going for. I love this.

12. It seems that whenever this band is stuck at some fine points of songwriting, or at least at writing vocal melodies, they scale back to the tried and true tactic of let’s scream something on top of our lungs even if it doesn’t fit the rhythm of the song at all and then just rewrite our rhythms to fit the syllables; we’ll call it a progressive touch and it’ll be just fine.

13. This song represents the aspect of your compilation I’d really love to explore more: I love the slower pace and the wistful mood. This might not even be the best song from your submission, but it’s a beauty and wonder captured in those few minutes. Somehow, this really connected with me.

14. I mean, I knew what to anticipate going into this one, and still I was surprised at how much I didn’t like the vocals mostly. And again, I get why they are like this, but whereas the music and the songwriting is well above the average here, the vocals are something I can’t quite get past, no matter how much I try.

15. This feels like the band was trying to reach out of their comfort zone—if they even have a comfort zone—and it ended up being a tacky wannabe hard rock song which I was ambivalent at first and developed a strong dislike on my subsequent listens.

16. These guys know how to write the rhythm guitar parts. The whole compilation kept me interested as I was following the guitar lines. It’s honestly impressive, as I’m not even a guitar player—well, I dabble in acoustic guitar, but that’s irrelevant here—my attention was constantly on that. Also the vocals were nice for a change.

It is not—this quote isn't from your Greatest Hits.

The Entertainer is actually quite hilarious with Billy's rant about writing a masterpiece but if you want to make a hit you're gonna make it fit and so they've cut it to 3:05. :)

There were a few there that I'd say are very likely to be from the Piano Man.  Possible some could apply to Hemina as well.

While you're at it Ruslan, give us an R in group 2; and an L in group 3.

I see a song titled Avalon - which is Silent Voices.  As is Fate Divided and Reign of Terror
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Updating R and L right now because why not.

Edit: anyway, right now the schedule for results is as follows:

1st matchup: Saturday
2nd matchup: Tuesday
3rd matchup: next week's Wednesday or Thursday
4th matchup: next week's Friday or Sunday
