Here is where members can keep track of current and future survivors.
For those who wish to start a new survivor, it is recommended you post your upcoming survivor(s) here ahead of time to allow voters to relisten/rewatch albums or seasons, and should hopefully strum up more participation! For those posting upcoming survivors, please include the survivor's name and when you expect to start running it.

I'm excited. ;D

Once I'm done with my Beware of Darkness survivor, I will be moving on through the next few SB albums in order - The Kindness of Strangers, Day For Night, V, and then the lengthy one... Snow. I may start Snow soon and run that concurrently with the next 3 albums just because it has 26 songs on it, and it would take 25 days to run it...
After the Morse-Era albums, I'll get to the next three, and maybe by that time, the new album will be shipping out to everyone! :metal

I was thinking about restarting the NIN one that I let die a while ago once the traffic in this board slows down.
-
ariich, can you sticky this soon?
-
ariich, can you sticky this soon?
You can't rely on Brits to do anything right.
-
Are we going to be doing the "no multiple survivors/albums at a time" rule?
-
Are we going to be doing the "no multiple survivors/albums at a time" rule?
Yeah, I would like that rule to be enforced, but I'm not the one to do it.
I'll let the South Park one have 2 for now, but Splent wanted to put a 3rd one up, and I asked him not to do so.

SHUT IT. :P

Do you want me to put that up for a tentative May/June starting?
-
Sounds good.
-
Iced Earth - Night of The Stormrider Survivor coming soon! Go listen to Jon Schaffer's best work. Gene Adam's reign of terror is almost over.
-
Soundgarden - Superunknown started today, as you know
-
Soundgarden - Superunknown started today, as you know
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO CONTINUE THE GENESIS SURVIVOR?
-
Screw it. Setra I'm gonna take over the Genesis survivor :neverusethis:
Starting with Trespass
-
When does the DT 2010 survivor take place? This may be a dumb question, but I wasn't around last year.
-
Splent should be starting it in June/July, I think. If you want to PM him to double check you could do that too
-
I always start it July 1, it usually takes about 6 months to complete.
-
Coheed's Second Stage Turbine Blade Survivor is now in the finals!
-
Riverside - Second Life Syndrome is at final round. After that, which is two days, Rapid Eye Movement survivor will follow.
-
Sert, the name of the Coheed album is In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3. You need to say on top of things now before you have to update the thread for Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV Volume I: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness.

Well, my name is Setra, not Sert. You're gonna need to stay on top of things if you're going to be addressing me in the future.
-
I'd like to start an In Flames survivor, if that's okay with you all.
-
I'd like to start an In Flames survivor, if that's okay with you all.
Certainly, any idea when you want to start?
-
As soon as you say I can. I know that there are a lot of survivors running now, so I thought I should just ask when I should start.
-

I'll slate you for a tentative May beginning. I think when The Offspring survivor ends, you can start, if thats alright.
-
Okay, that sounds great. It shouldn't be that long.
-
The Nine Inch Nails survivor is now up and running again.
-
Hey Setra, After my Yes survivor is over, I'm thinking about starting up a Neal Morse survivor.
Let's say July 1st for a starting date.
-
Iced Earth's Burnt Offerings Survivor coming soon.
-

Sounds fine with me. :)
-
My Snow survivor is over, so I will backtrack and start with The Kindness Of Strangers!
-Marc.
-
I think I'll resume the Shadow Gallery survivor in late July. Hopefully it will pick up more this time.

Gotcha. I'll be participating for sure :)
-
My Snow survivor is over, so I will backtrack and start with The Kindness Of Strangers!
-Marc.
Just an update on my SB Survivor - I will be gone on a trip from Sunday morning (the 6th), until Tuesday afternoon (the 8th), so just before I leave, I will post up the first round of the Day For Night Survivor, and let it run 3 days while the final round for The Kindness Of Strangers is running/ending.
By the time I get back, the first round for DFN should be nearing it's end, and I'll continue on with the following 6 rounds over the next 2 weeks... then off to V, which should take up another week and a half. Then the consolation rounds begin, which will include 6 songs (4 rounds) with two winners moving into the FINALS.
Hopefully by the middle of July, I will begin the FINALS for the Morse-Era Survivor, which should take the majority of the month of July and a week or so of August.
Long-term, August will see the beginning of the Post-Morse Survivor, with Feel Euphoria, Octane, Spock's Beard, and X, which by then, will probably see wide-spread retail release, and those with it now will have had a good amount of time to let it sink in!
-Marc.
-
:tup
Thanks for the heads up.
-
I'm gonna have to put the Iced Earth Burnt Offerings Survivor on hold until I get internet back. I can't post polls with my phone.
-
What happened to the South Park survivor?
-
What happened to the South Park survivor?
Splent was off for a week or two, considering its the end of the school year (i think thats the reson).
-
I was thinking of doing a Pain of Salvation Survivor. Pick best 2 songs from each of there 5 albums and do a final top 10 list.
Anyone? :)
Edit - Would I be better off doing a PT Survivor? I don't see any of those roaming around...

Actually, both the Porcupine Tree and Pain of Salvation survivors finished not-too-long ago.
Besides, both of those bands usually have the same person run them each year.
Sorry bud, but you may need to pick something else to run.
-
mmmk I'll look into something else then.
-
what about Agalloch?
-
If you feel like you can get enough voters, then by all means.
You can start next week if you want. Ill finish my Scale the Summit survivor, and you can take that spot.
-
Ok sounds good, I'll work on getting enough voters to make it worthwhile and will start it next week

I've chalked you up.
Best start advertising now

Can we maybe invoke a minimum interest thread for survivors? Something like: Person A wants to run a survivor for Band X. In order to run survivor, a minimum number of people have to commit to participating in it for it to get ran. I don't want to run a 4-5 person survivor again, so it would help someone like me to gauge interest - and it would help reduce board clutter by eliminating the dinky survivors that have been flooding the board lately.
-
Yeah I've been thinking about this too. There's only 3-4 participants in my Kiss survivor. If I had known that I probably wouldn't have started one. But I'm going to continue with it anyway, unless the interest for it drops.
-
Well, only me and DTVT participate in my Scale the Summit survivor. But, I'm only running one album, so thats not a big piece of clutter.
I dunno, I dont think we need a minimum interest policy going on, but its hard to get people to participate.
Take the cut-short Shadow Gallery survivor. I know there are lots of Shadow Gallery fans on these boards, but only a few participated.
I enjoy participating in survivors regularily, but I know others really dont care...
-
@Cerberus: You're free to start whenever you want.
However, if I don't receive any notice from you before July 1, I will remove your survivor from the upcoming list.
-
Hey Setra, After my Yes survivor is over, I'm thinking about starting up a Neal Morse survivor.
Let's say July 1st for a starting date.
I had started to run a NM survivor starting with testimony a few years ago. I dropped the ball because of school.
-
So, does anyone know what the deal is with the Dillinger Escape Plan, Soundgarden, and Nine Inch Nails survivors?
-
@Cerberus: You're free to start whenever you want.
However, if I don't receive any notice from you before July 1, I will remove your survivor from the upcoming list.
NOT THE LIST!

I did a Van Halen survivor a year or two ago and would like to do so again. Any interest?
-
I would be interested, but have mostly heard the DLR albums. Maybe it's a good time to listen to the others too then.
I'm up for it, if you can get more participants.
-

A few survivors are in the final stretch, so if you do choose to start, you can pretty mch start whenever.
Let me know whether or not you're going to run one, and I'll chalk it up.

OK. I'll ask around a little more to try find willing participants (thanks, Zydar!). I'll let you know.

I can participate until 5150. I had no interest in Hagar and from what I heard of Cherone, none of that either
-
Hagar was awesome, but you still get a :tup
-
You know, I don't listen to Van Halen as much as I used to, and I should really give the albums a spin again.
I hear Diamond Dave is recording a new album with Van Halen for 2011 right now :metal

BTW, Setra, I'll be ready to start my survivor sometime tomorrow, if that's OK.

I'd like to start a Survivor using the closing tracks of Dream Theater albums. Possibly next Monday, if that's not too soon. Thanks.
Name: DT Closing Tracks Survivor
This is my first attempt at the fine art of Survivoring, so how long would you advise each round lasting?

I would recommend a 2-day cycle for each round.
Pay attention to other survivors for the most part, and observe how they are run. You'll get a good idea on how to do them well.
And, yeah, I'll chalk you up for next week.

Chalk it up, I'm getting ready to post it. I will run each round for 2 days.

I guess I'll start a real Nightwish survivor starting with Angels Fall First. How long should each round last?

1-2 days is the standard.

Word. First round coming up.

Anyone interested in an Iron Maiden survivor? I didn't see one in the OP, so I assume it'll be fine, but I'll wait for someone to say. I can start it at any time, and probably would only wait 2 days per round.

Zeltar always runs the Iron Maiden survivor every year.

Noted. What particularly "famous" (for this board, not necessarily major critical acclaim) aren't usually done then?

Well, Zeltar always does Metallica and Iron Maiden. tri.ad always does Rush. Splent always does Dream Theater.
I can't remember who, but we usually have a steady person for Porcupine Tree and one for Pain of Salvation as well. And I do the Thrice one.
I dunno, if you suggest a few ideas for survivors, I'll tell you which ones can be done now.
-
Slough Feg is one of my favorite bands ever but apparently no one else here listens to them :\
Black Sabbath? Judas Priest? Megadeth? I'd be up for any of those.
-
I'd be interested in a Judas Priest survivor.
-
Have we ever had a Priest survivor before?
-
Doesn't look like it! If no one has an objection, I can get Rocka Rolla started up soon.

That seems alright then.

Would anyone object to a "DT's Shortest Songs Survivor", taking the shortest song from each album? The list would, obviously, include:
Status Seeker
Wait For Sleep
The Silent Man
Hell's Kitchen
Through My Words
Disappear
Vacant
I Walk Beside You
Forsaken
Wither
I chose "Disappear" over "War Inside My Head" as it seems we're treating SDOIT as one song in many of these Survivors, so that being the case, "Disappear" would be the shortest song on the album.
It's also interesting to note the general atmosphere and feeling and emotion in many of these songs, and they happen to end up sounding similar in those respects.
-Marc.
-
^Sounds great. :tup
-
Maybe we should wait a while? We have a great number of DT survivors going on at the moment.
-
Yeah, I'll chalk it up for August. But, I'd like to wait until at least one of the other DT ones is done. Once the Power Game or Closing Song survivor is finished, I'll let you start.

If Wait for Sleep doesn't win that I will be disappoint.

As you wish.

Setra should be the mod of P/S.
-
I don't think P/S needs a moderator per se.
This sort of organization is nice though to avoid a million survivors coming up at once
-
Yeah, I sort of unofficially mod it. As in, I keep the board organized and distill the occasional argument.
And yeah, the organization is what I was going for when I started this.
-
To be officially official: I will of course be starting up Symphony X after Genesis is finished. Actually, I think I'd like to hand the reins over to someone after We Can't Dance so i'm not starting it in October :-\

If you can't find anyone to run it, I'll take over. I wouldn't be able to vote, not knowing those albums.
-
Looks like I would have to start the Shadow Gallery survivor from scratch, the old threads are deleted, which sucks because I wanted to see if it picked up after their first album.

Well, do the first album again. We really didn't get very far last time.
-
I'd like to ask your opinion on something before the final round of my Closing Song survivor begins:
Should I keep the poll open for longer because it's the final?
-

I see no reason why you can't. It is your survivor after all.
It seems to be getting a good size of participants, so my personal recommendation would be to extend it a day or so.
Granted, we all know Octavarium is going to win ;)
-
Some of us were looking into getting a Tool survivor started. I'm not sure who will run it though, because I'm still doing the In Flames survivor.
-

Let me know when you find someone. It's been about a year or so since the last Tool survivor, so now would be a fine time to start one up again.
-
I guess I'll just run the Tool survivor myself. No one really stepped up to it :lol
Let me know when I can start it.

Well, you are still running the In Flames one...
But if you think you can run 2 survivors, go right ahead.
Devin Townsend and Coheed are winding down, so I'll put you down for late August. It'll give you some time to move ahead in your In Flames survivor before you bring the second one on.
Also, I will be taking part in the Tool voting :tup
-
Okay that sounds good. In the meantime, I'll still try to look for someone else to run the survivor.
-

Cool.
I'll run it if BlackFloyd would take back his Opeth survivor. Doesn't look like that'll happen.
But, if you cant find anyone Ill take it on.
-
I'll start the Tool survivor as soon as you say I can. It will start with Opiate, unless no one knows that album... (I'm not even too familiar with it myself)
-

Once the Coheed survivor is done, you can start. Ill shoot you a reminder.
I dont know about Opiate. I doubt you'll get many voters for an EP.
-
Ok then, I'll start with Undertow and do Opiate later if there is a demand for it.
-
I doubt there will be :P
Sounds good though :tup
-
When there's an opening, I wouldn't mind starting up a Megadeth survivor if there's enough interest.

Just an update on my Spock's Beard Survivor, the final round of the Morse-Era albums is coming to a close, so I will begin my Post-Morse Beard Albums survivors soon, starting with Feel Euphoria.

The Alice In Chains survivor is in the finals rounds now, so you can change the OP
-
Have there been Gabriel era Genesis survivors yet? If not, may I start one? :D
Ignore this post.
-
Coolest Ways To Die *revamp* :)
-
I will start a Sigur Ros survivor once I familiarize myself more with their discography. I know ( ) well but not much else. Expect it to start sometime around the end of this year/beginning of next year.

Has anyone ever done Survivors for DT songs that have movements ("A Change Of Seasons", "Trial Of Tears", "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence", "Octavarium", and "In The Presence Of Enemies")?
Looking back at my Survivor for the Twelve Steps Suite, I was wondering of doing a series of Mini-Survivors that decide which movements of these multi-movement songs were the best.
If it hasn't been done before, I'd love to start the "Dream Theater Multi-Movement Song Survivor" series! Of course, after my DT Longest Song Survivor is done.
-Marc.

I don't believe we've had a survivor for that. I know we had a poll on the DT side, but it didn't really last too long.
Yeah, this could be pretty cool. I'l mark you down for Late September, but basically you can start when your Longest Song Survivor is finished.

Sweet! Thanks! :tup
I think I'll just go chronologically - "A Change Of Seasons", "The Killing Hand" (forgot this one earlier!), "Trial Of Tears", "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence", "Octavarium", and "In The Presence Of Enemies".
Two questions though - should I include "A Mind Beside Itself"? It'd only be a two-round Survivor (as would "Trial Of Tears"). And for the SDOIT one, should "Losing Time" still be paired with "Grand Finale"? Or should they be separated? There's reasons to have them either way.
Also, I suppose at the end of it all (after ITPOE finishes), I could do a Survivor for the Best Movement among these 6 songs (7 if I decide to include AMBI).
-Marc.
-
First off, The Killing Hand comes before A Change of Seasons, so if you're doing them chronologically then you should remember that.
Don't do A Mind Beside Itself. It's 3 different songs, and it's inclusion will
a) Start a whole debate about why it's included, and
b) If you do do a "Best Movement Finals"-dealy, it's going to be heavily skewed towards Voices.
Also, Losing Time/Grand Finale should be kept as one track. I don't know of anyone really who separates it.
Yeah, these are really just suggestions to make it more "proper". Follow them how you wish, but keep in mind these are really just to make it more accurate so the discussions are more about the survivor than the odd inclusions of songs.

Gotcha! As for doing ACOS first, I was just thinking more in lines of when it was written, as sections (if not the whole thing) of ACOS were written before WDADU was released. That and I think it would gain more attention to the Survivor Series if ACOS was done first, but that's just my feelings on it. As for your other suggestions, I agree- AMBI out, and SDOIT as 8 options and not 9.

When it's time to do my Sigur Ros survivor, should i leave Von brigði out?
-
When it's time to do my Sigur Ros survivor, should i leave Von brigði out?
Yeah, I think so. A remix album is usually not included.
-
Change of plans.
While I really want to eventually do a Sigur Ros Survivor, it's taking me a while to get used to their songs and remember which are which since there are no lyrics for me to understand. I think instead I'm going to start a Muse survivor towards the end of this year if that's okay.
-
I just started my Final Round for my Spock's Beard - Spock's Beard survivor, so after Saturday night, I will begin my Spock's Beard Bonus Tracks Survivor, which will run for 6 rounds/12 days.

Yep. We haven't had a Muse survivor since before the crash. It's high time another one was started.

Hey setra - Just wanted to update that, in two days' time, I will begin my DT Multi-Movement Songs Survivor.
Also, my SB survivor is now in the Nick-Era Bonus Tracks stage, but in a few days (after 2 more rounds), I'll be moving on to the survivor for X, then a short 3-round Consolation (4 songs, 1 winner), then the Nick-Era Finals. Whew!

I don't want to start one, I'm just asking: Is there a regular Porcupine Tree survivor on here, and roughly what time of the year is it conducted?
-
After I finish the Beatles album survivor, I'm thinking of doing one for the latter-era "Lennon" Beatles songs; maybe the 20 or so most revered (A Day in the Life, Revolution, Because, etc) and then continuing with the McCartney songs. Sound cool?
-
Sure, why not? I'd be up for it.
-

Yeah, there is a regular one. I can't remember when exactly it begins (sometime in December or January I think), but it'll start up again before too long.

Hmmm . . . let's go with: "Lennon" Beatles Songs; and then "McCartney" Beatles Songs

Alright. That seems fine.

Based on feedback from other members, I'm going to bag the Lennon/McCartney songs survivor and do one for each album instead . . . OK?

Well, for each individual album, so as an example: Beatles Survivor (Abbey Road)

Based on Beatles discussion in the forum, I started up a Beatles album survivor. Completely forgot about posting in this thread first!
Sorry to jump the gun. Is everybody OK with me doing two albums at a time??
-
Also didn't realize there was discussion in this thread already!! Man, I fail.
Dream Team, you can take over running the survivor if you want... I didn't mean to step on your toes. But I am more than willing to run it and make it my baby. ;D

By all means, be my guest . . . I don't mind someone else doing the heavy lifting! ;)

So, just awaiting approval from setrataeso.

Disregarding Arcaeus's typical juvenile behaviour, yeah I'm cool with one being started.
I was going to ask for you to wait until the Rush survivor is done, considering a full Beatles survivor will take more time, and we're full of long-term survivors right now.
But, if you've already started, then I'm fine with you beginning now.
Also, after you finish with either Please Please Me or With the Beatles, can you switch to one album at a time? I like to keep that policy consistent. Thanks. :)

Haha...I get it guys. I'm not well-liked.

Ban them all. Nao.

They aren't doing anything wrong. I wouldn't ban them even if I could.

I was thinking of taking on a 2nd survivor. Does anyone usually run a Black Sabbath survivor or not?
-

A Black Sabbath survivor was run recently.
Also, I like to uphold the rule of not running 2 survivors at once. Or at least not 2 lengthy ones. If you have an idea for a shorter survivor, you can run it now, otherwise, throw some other suggestions at me, and I'll let you know what you can run.
-
I'd like to try a multi-album survivor. If these two bands already have a Survivor regularly run each year, that's fair enough. If only one has, I'll do the other; if both are free, I'll take my pick.
Transatlantic
Pink Floyd
When I get a response, I'll decide on what course to take.
-
The OP says there should be a Megadeth survivor in October.... my question is where is it? :lol

Yeah, both of those bands have a regular survivor. And they ended relatively recently, too.

Yeah, Global Laziness is certainly acting as his name would suggest :P
He says it'll happen "soon", but I'm giving him the next few days, otherwise I'll either drop it completely or find someone to take it over.
-
Global Laziness still hasn't done the Megadeth survivor :p
I would run it if I wasn't doing the Judas Priest survivor, unless you'd let me do both of them at once
-
Do it. I'm looking forward to the Megadeth survivor. :tup

Well I'm only allowed to do one at a time unless a mod gives me the okay to do it. I'd love to but its not up to me. :(
-
It's not really mods giving permission here. It's just setrataeso making sure there aren't too many survivors at once. Since most people now know that there's a Megadeth survivor coming up and he's already given the okay for it, I think it would be okay to start. Also, running 2 survivors at the same time isn't a huge deal. I run both the In Flames and Tool survivors. I just enjoy doing it. If you feel like you'd be up for it then I would think it would be okay.

Of course I would be up for it, the JP survivor goes 2 days per round so it isn't like its a huge load. But I asked to run a 2nd survivor earlier and got denied :(
But if he changed his mind I'd be more than glad to do it.

Yeah, before the P/S board was way more packed.
A lot of survivors are in the home stretch right now, so I'm quite happy to have you take over the Megadeth survivor. Global Laziness is not going to do it, but I want it to get done.
So, yeah, you can start whenever you want.

I'm curious, there are a few survivors that are supposedly run yearly that haven't started yet. (Iron Maiden, Porcupine Tree)
What's the situation with those?

Porcupine Tree starts early next year, Iron Maiden starts in a few months. I think Zeltar wanted to wait until the Metallica survivor is nearing completion.

My extensive Kiss Survivor is reaching its home stretch, and will probably be done in 3-4 weeks unless we have a lot of tiebreakers. Just a heads up.

As are my two Survivors - the DT Multi-Movement Survivor (one more song after 8VM and then a short finals) and the Spock's Beard Survivor (now in Nick-era Finals)... that is, unless I do a Morse-Era/Nick-Era type of ultimate finals showdown, but I haven't quite figured out how I'd do that yet. Top 5 of each? Top 3 of each? Or perhaps just Top 2 of each? Still not sure yet...but I'm mostly certain the top Morse-Era songs would beat the top Nick-Era songs anyway.
After these two are done, I think I'll take a break from Survivor'ing, although I love doing them, I'm not sure what else I COULD do. Everyone else seems to be taking care of all the major prog and prog-related bands I'd ever do a survivor for. I was thinking about doing a Marillion Survivor, but I'd probably get as many votes for that as I have been for my SB one.
Wasn't there a Neal Morse solo Survivor? Last I recall, it was on One, but I think it faded away. Maybe I could pick that up? I love Neal's solo works, and it'd be a great follow-up from my SB Survivor.
-Marc.

Thanks for the heads up on all the home-stretch survivors right now, guys! I appreciate that you guys are putting in the same effort that I am to make this section organized.
M, I'm not entirely sure what happened to the NM survivor. I remember it being at One, but I remember taking it off the list when it wasn't updated for a while. I guess it just sort of ended.
Anywho, you're a great survivor runner considering you are actually dedicated (and we're lacking a good amount of dedicated people over here), so whenever you want to pick up the NM survivor, or start a new one, you have my support.

Thanks for your support setrataeso! :tup I've messaged Quadrochosis about his NM survivor, so I'll wait for his blessing and input on it before proceeding, which is fine because I still have some time until my SB survivor is finished.
EDIT - Got word from Quadrochosis and he's cool with me taking over the Neal Morse Survivor, so once my SB Survivor is finished, I will pick up with One and hopefully get more than 3 voters!

Setra, I'm going to start my Christmas Song survivor soon. I will start a thread first asking for song ideas. I just took 20 last year and was taken to task for some that were omitted.

Good call. When you make the thread, I'll link to it in the OP.

I was thinking of running a "Rush Multi-Movement Song Survivor" after my DT one is done... might there be any interest in that? I'll also post this in the Rush-song Survivor thread once my DT one is near the end. The only songs that would be a part of this survivor would be: "By-Tor & The Snow Dog", "The Necromancer", "The Fountain Of Lamneth", "2112", "Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage", "Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres", "La Villa Strangiato", and "Natural Science".
8 songs, for quite a while actually (at least 37 rounds/72 days), then a 7 round/14 day finals... it'd be quite along survivor (about 86 days long!), but I think it could be something fun. Just shooting that out there.
Also, I still plan on picking up the Neal Morse Survivor, starting with One (11-song Restored Tracklisting), so that'll keep me busy with that after the Spock's Beard Survivor is over. That should start around the end of the month.
-Marc.
-
Yeah, I have no problem with that.
Multiple survivors are not really a problem right now, just because so many survivors are reaching their conclusion.
And I would participate.
-
My Kiss Survivor will be all done in less than five hours, just a heads up if anybody wants to start something new.
It's been a great time running it during all these months (I think I started it in April or something?) and now it's finally over soon. A big thanks to those who have stuck by me through and through. I won't be running another one for a while, but I'm definitely interested in organizing a new one in the not so distant future. I just need to find a band/artist which will have a few more followers than 3-4 voters. Perhaps a Bruce Springsteen survivor or something?
-
Since my Office survivor has been buried but the member tournament and other survivors, can I sign up to start it again whenever this section won't be so clustered. After Christmas sometime maybe?

Awesome. Noted.

Fantastic. I've got more Pink Floyd albums than any other band (although DT is catching up), so I'm looking forward to this survivor. :tup
-
Pink Floyd Survivor? Sweet! I'll have to start listening soon... I'm not much into Syd-Era Floyd, but I'll spin it often just for the sake of voting because Pink Floyd is definitely a Top 10 band, and while I own all their albums, I can honestly say I've not spun anything before Meddle more than a few times.

I only own from Meddle. I'll jump in durring that album.

My earliest Floyd album is Atom Heart Mother, so I'll probably come in from there. Not really into Syd-era Floyd.
After having been posting regularly and voting in survivors for 6 months or so, I'm looking forward to what the first half of the year brings in terms of survivors. I've not yet seen proper survivors for Transatlantic or Porcupine Tree (among my favourite bands right now), so I await those with eager anticipation.

IIRC, I think Quadrochosis did the 2010 Transatlantic Survivor back in February-April, so I'm hoping he does it again. Also, I'll probably start my Spock's Beard Survivor up once again sometime in March or April after the Neal Morse Survivor is over... and this time, I'll stick to album order (I had jumped around originally). I'd love to run the SB Survivor again, and hoping get more voters this year (on average, in the Neal-Era it was about 6 voters/round, in the Nick-Era, it was about 4 voters/round. I *know* we have more SB fans here than that!).
Pyroph did the 2009 PT Survivor, which ended sometime in February 2010 (around when I was getting into this subforum), so I missed it last go around! I hope he starts it up again! I've slowly been putting PT back into my listening queue!
Also, if anyone's interested, I could do my various DT Survivor's again:
The Twelve Step Suite Movements
The Twelve Step Suite Songs
DT Shortest Songs
DT Longest Songs

I think I'll be in a better position to vote next time this comes around. I've really got into the Beard in the last few weeks or so, particulary the Nick era. I'm also growing to like a few songs from the Neal era.

Hey Setra, I thought I had dibs on the Muse survivor?
I was not aware.
Icy informed me that he was backing out and that someone may or may not be picking it up. And he couldn't remember who...
But, thats good that I know now. I put you down for that now.
-
i would like to start a Smashing Pumpkins survivor based on my other thread in GM discussion. Could be fun.

I'll participate for the albums I have.

Has there been BTBAM survivors?

I thought about doing a Marillion Survivor this year, but if there's more interest in me doing the Spock's Beard Survivor again, I'll have my plate full with that one...unless it's cool for me to do both, I won't mind. I've grown to LOVE Marillion over the last year or two - I'm just worried that a Marillion Survivor will only garner 4-6 voters per round, and that's on a GOOD day.
If no one claims a Marillion Survivor, I could start one up sometime in February or March after my Rush Multi-Movement Song and Neal Morse Survivors are done.
-Marc.

That sounds fine. I don't know what kind of participation you'd have, plus you're a new P/S member, so I would need to be assured that the survivor would be legit.
Have there been survivors for Queensryche and Marillion before?
It's been a while for both of them, I do believe.
Has there been BTBAM survivors?
Gwii ran one last year, not too long ago. He's not around much any more, so it'd be cool to get another one started at some point. If you want to run one in a few months, I think that would work.
-
There has never been a Marillion survivor that covered all their albums as far as I know.
-
Well if anyone is serious about running a survivor anytime soon, just give me the band and the date that you wish to start.

Because it's been longer for the Marillion survivor, I would suggest putting that as the higher priority. Spock's Beard finished not too long ago, so maybe wait a little while before putting that one back up.
Otherwise, I'll put you down for Marillion starting in March. Is that cool?

Sounds good. I don't mind putting SB on hold, probably til Summer or even Fall this year. In the mean time, if Quadrochosis isn't going to do it, I'd like to run the Transatlantic Survivor since many TA fans have only discovered the joy and wonder of The Whirlwind in the last 10 months and they may have missed out on the survivor from early last year.
I'm also just looking for a reason to run two survivors at once because I love doing them!

That sounds fine. I've said it before, but you are one of the best survivor runners here, just based on your enthusiasm and dedication.
However, I still try to enforce my feeble rule of "no running multiple survivors at once". I'm bending on this to allow an extended survivor and a shorter survivor to be run at the same time by the same person, which you are doing now with Neal Morse and Rush Multi-Movements.
I think it helps to balance out the P/S side if we don't get overwhelmed by 10-month survivors and such.

And I understand the multiple-survivors rule, it can get the place a bit cluttered at times! Thanks for allowing me to run two at once, for the most part, the majority of the last year or so! I look forward to doing the Marillion Survivor! I hope participation is high...gotta rally interest soon...
-Marc.

Marc, thanks very much in advance for the Marillion survivor. That will be a fun one!
-
Marc, thanks very much in advance for the Marillion survivor. That will be a fun one!
No problem! As soon as my two current survivors reach the middle-to-end of their respective Finals, I will post a Marillion Survivor Discussion thread here, posting what I plan to be the mapping-out of this survivor. I've already kind of figured it out, and it will be a bit different than survivors I've run in the past, so look for that informative thread sometime in mid-February.

I think Zeltar is running one every year. I guess he's doing it after his Metallica survivor is done. Not sure though.

Yo Set, what are the chances I can get an IT Crowd survivor going? Got some people on board, and since there are only 24 episodes total it wouldn't take too long to run.

I'm still waiting for the Maiden survivor. Any sign of this happening? :-[

Doesn't look like it. Zeltar seems to not be completing his Metallica survivor, and he was going to wait until that was done before moving onto Maiden.
So, at this point, that slot is open to anyone who is free to run it.

Lets get one going!! :metal :metal

I would love to run it but I have my Judas Priest survivor. Unless it's allowed to run multiple ones?

Are you referring to the Maiden survivor or Metallica survivor here? Because it'd be nice if someone could jump in so we could finish the Metallica survivor.

The problem is that, since the P/S side has been trimmed, all the previous album results are lost. I'm sure if all the participants put our heads together, we could recall which songs were advancing to the finals, but until then, Zeltar would be the only one who could provide that information. And that's only if he had been keeping track of it, himself.
-
Just posting to make sure it would be alright to run the end of one Album as I begin the other for my Marillion Survivor?
For example, I would finish the second-to-last round of an Album, which determines the 3rd Place Consolation Song, and leaves the Final Two for Finals. As some have stated, they'd like to see which of those two would win that Album Survivor for Best Song of the Album. I wasn't going to do that, considering Marillion's looooong discography and number of songs on their albums, and doing 2-Day Rounds, the Survivor would take a VERY long time, so I was going to shave off 2 days/1 round from each Album and save time.
...BUT, if I can run that "Final Round" as I start the next album, it would take as much time anyway. It'd probably be a 1-day Round anyway, but if it's not a problem having two 2-Day Rounds up (the end of one album, the start of another) concurrently, then great! :tup

Just out of interest has anyone run a LTE survivor in the not-too-distant past?
If so, do they have results?
If not, is there any interest in one at some point? It would be fairly short (17 rounds) but there are a lot of survivors starting/about to start at the moment
-
I might be up for running a Maiden survivor. I don't mind getting one going. It will be fun :)
Go for it! :metal
-
@M - Yep, I have no problem with that.
@Jirpo - If you are willing to stick through the whole survivor, I'll be happy to have you start the Maiden survivor.
@wjc - It's been quite some time since the last LTE survivor. If you want to start a little later in the month, you're more than welcome to.
-
I will :D
I'll start it up night after tomorrow because believe it or not, tomorrow night I am going to see Iron Maiden live for the first time!! :metal :metal :metal
-
Awesome! :metal
-
I will start an Amorphis survivor in a few days, if there aren't too many survivors running at the moment.

Yeah, I ran that. Universal Mind won in a landslide, although some of the other rounds were hotly contested.
-
Anyone interested in me making a nevermore survivor?
-
I'd participate.
-
Anyone interested in a DTF Mods Survivor?
-
:lol
-
I'm pretty when I mentioned the idea before, people seemed to be interested in a Foo Fighters survivor, especially with the new album out in a couple of weeks. Would aim to start it in the next couple of days if there were enough interest.
-
dethklok and cyberdrummer, can you guys see what kind of interest there would be for your respective survivor ideas? If you think you guys can get enough voters, I'll chalk you guys up.

Well I checked the nevermore appreciation thread and there are quite a few regular posters in there who seem to be big fans.
-
Nevermore is very iffy. Lat doesn't post in P/S ever, and he's probably the biggest fan of them on here. Also, I don't even think he's heard the self-titled album (along with many, I'm sure). You'd have an incredibly slow start, and still a pretty slow survivor anyway. I don't think it's really worth it.

I would probably start with this godless endeavor, or dead heart in a dead world. You know the more popular albums and give time for people to listen to the lesser known ones like the politics of ecstacy or in memory.
-
Aside from the fact that it bugs the fuck out of me when survivors don't go in chronological order, that's probably a better solution.
-
I wouldn't be opposed to that idea.
I personally would only participate in the This Godless Endeavor rounds.
As much as I prefer chronological order, if you think working from most to least popular will help you strum up more interest, I'm all for it.
As for the lesser-known albums, it's your responsibility to get people motivated to listen to them and vote.
-
O.k. I'll start one soon if thats cool.
-
Anyone interested in a DTF Mods Survivor?
Yes, very much so. On the fb group so it can happen.
-
Hi there :) Anyone interested in Helloween survivor 2011? I must warn you that it's going to be long one ;) One of my favourite bands :hat
I will start it on 10th April, be there ;)
-
Has Anyone done a King Crimson - Discipline survivor? Is anyone interested in participating?
-
I'm pretty
Pretty vain, aren't we?
-
Helloween survivor 2011 starts tomorrow, sth about midnight ;) ENJOY !!!! :metal
-
Devy begins for a new year!
-

There seems to be a lot of interest, especially with the new album out recently, I expect there to be plenty of voters. Would like to get it started quite soon.
-
Can I ask what the situation is regarding a Transatlantic survivor. When does it normally run, and by whom? If no one has laid claim to it, I'd be willing to take it on.
-
Just so you know, setrataeso has taken an extended leave from DTF, so he won't be around to answer your question...
-
Oh right, didn't realise. I'll just start it when I'm ready then.
-
I'm back from the dead and ready to resume my position as P/S bitch.
Did I miss anything?
-
Hey, great to see you back! :tup
-
Welcome back mate.
-
Board seems to be doing fine without a "P/S bitch."
-
Well, I'm here for those who need me.
-
I haven't seen a King Crimson Survivor. Has any been done recently or can I go ahead and do one? Also, would anyone be interested in participating in it?
-
I don't think any have been run in recent history.
It's up to you to get people interested in it, so ask around before you start.
-

Hey, I'm gonna start this. Should I wait for some of the current ones to end?

Just out of interest, has anyone done a Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence movements survivor?
-

I believe The Letter M has...as I recall, he did one for all the Dream Theater songs that have movements.

Indeed I did! And then I pitted the winning movements of all the songs against each other. FYI, these were the results of the SDOIT Survivor:
1. VI. Solitary Shell
2. II. About To Crash
3. VII. About To Crash (Reprise)
4. V. Goodnight Kiss
5. VIII. Losing Time/Grand Finale
6. IV. The Test That Stumped Them All
7. I. Overture
III. War Inside My Head
-Marc.
-
What happened to the Pokemon survivor? I thought it was pretty cool.
-
I guess Volk wasn't up for doing it anymore.
-
setrataeso: You can update the OP if you want, my Judas Priest survivor are in the final rounds now. Thanks!
-
Done and done, thanks mate.
-
My Judas Priest survivor ended today, so you can scratch it off the list. Thanks to everyone who participated :tup
-
I'm planning on doing the Dream Theater Power Game again, probably starting sometime soon after wjc finishes his league ending. July or August, I don't know. Lots going on but it wasn't too much work once I got things going last time.

Sure thing. You are free to start whenever you please.

Is it okay to start a Pixar survivor? Or should I wait?
-
Is it okay to start a Pixar survivor? Or should I wait?
That's a good idea. It's not a long survivor, so you can start when you wish.
-
I was wondering, has there been a System of a Down survivor lately?
I might like to give that a go, if it hasn't been done recently.
-

There hasn't been one for a few years.
Now would be a fine time to start one.
-
Sounds good to me.
Is there any way that I should be creating hype?
also, this will be my first survivor, so I may need to pm for help.
-
OOH SOAD SURVIVOR!
Count me IN

There is a System of a Down thread in GM.
I'll post it in the Upcoming Survivors. Do you want to start in a week? It should give you enough time to get some interest.
That's fine if you aren't sure what to do. I would recommend looking to other survivors and just observe how other people run them.

I have. My main issue is how to end the survivor.. do I take the top 3 songs from each album and run more rounds with them as Finals?
do I run consolation rounds for the rest of the songs? etc, etc.
-
That's all up to you. Different people like to do different things.
-
Typically, one would advance the top 2 songs from each album to the finals.
The 3rd (or 3rd and 4th) place song(s) go to consolation, and the top 1-2 songs go the finals from that.
-
ah , ok
thx guyz
-
I will be starting my SOAD survivor tomorrow morning, as planned.
-

Good stuff. Best of luck.

thank you!
-
OH MY GAWD THIS WILL BE FUCKING EPIC
-
I'm going to be starting a survivor of The Office (US Version) either tonight or tomorrow night, but I will let the first round last a couple days to allow people to watch some episodes.
-
I was thinking about doing a David Fincher movie survivor. Anybody interested? When would be a good time to start?
-
As my Helloween Survivor is closer and closer to an end, I was thinking how many Annihilator fans are here? I'm definitly a huge one, and it would be a honor to start Annihilator survivor when I end with Helloween. Any interests? ;)
-
I've youtubed a few songs by them, and they are on my "to get into" list. It'll probably be a while before I get round to picking up any of their CD's though.
-
Anyone a fan of RHCP or Mastodon? I'd be interested in running survivors for either of them (unless anyone else already does so regularly.
-
There hasn't been an RHCP survivor to my knowledge. A Mastodon survivor was held last year. I know there are fans of them here, so either band would be welcome.
-
So, I have another idea on my next survivor ( I'm just reminding that Helloween Survivor is just about to get into consolation and finals zone :) ). I haven't seen Deep Purple survivor here. I think that these Guys deserve to have Their place on DTF. Any interested? ;D
-
If Mastodon's been done before I think I'd prefer to do Trivium. Sorry to be awkward, but would that be ok?
-

Yeah man, if you can rally some voters. A bunch of survivors have either recently finished or are soon to finish, so we're gonna need some new ones starting up soon.
-
Sure, I'll give that a go. Would posting in the Trivium thread in GMD be ok? (last post Sept 22nd)
And TSC I'd be interested to see a DP survivor but probably wouldn't be able to vote on more than a few albums.

I'd be interested in participating in a Deep Purple survivor. I haven't heard every song they've done but it would give me an opportunity to check out their stuff a bit more.
-
Zydar, great to hear that :) I would have also to relisten some albums, especially the older ones. Albums after In Rock are well known for me, but the first ones are don't :P
-
I may start-up my Spock's Beard Survivor in 2012 once my Marillion Survivor is finished, just FYI to everyone here. I can't recall if I included X in the last one I did, but this time the album will have been out for over a year and a half now, so I'm sure it's sunk in to everyone's minds by now.
I'll keep everyone posted, but that's my plan for now. Marillion is just about done with proper albums, then I'll do B-Sides, then Consolation and the Finals.
-Marc.

You did in fact include X.

I plan on starting up a Sigur Ros survivor within the next few days.

Would anyone be interested in a Pink Floyd survivor? Unless somebody already does them.
-

I usually do them, but I stopped this year during the finals and I can't remember why. I will probably start it up again in February like I usually do.
-
I have asked this before, but is there any interest in a Shadow Gallery survivor?
As one of my favourite bands, I'd like to run one, if there's enough people willing to vote.
-

Well, what has happened with the Shadow Gallery survivor in the past is that the participation rate was too low to keep it going. Granted, because it always starts with the first album (aka, the least known one) we only had myself, DTVT, and Nick participate. Both times we ended up just quitting out once we got to Carved in Stone.
My suggestion to you is to guarantee you have yourself some voters before you start it up. Post in the Shadow Gallery thread, and ask people if they want to participate. If you get some interest, start it up, and we can see how it goes.
-
Can I just post in the Shadow Gallery thread? The last post in the thread I dug up was in may this year, so I'm nit sure whether there really is an active group of people looking for that. I suppose I could try though.
-

If that's how infrequently the page is posted in, that will probably give you a pretty good lead on how many voters you will have :/
-
Who ran the Ayreon survivors? It's been a while as I recall, and I was thinking it could/should include all of Arjen's projects. Participation in Ambeon and Guilt Machine may be low, but I think the rest would get a decent following.

I believe Sintheros ran the Ayreon survivor in the past.

where is the A7X survivor????

Hey, I've been here for over a year and haven't seen a Rush survior. What's up with that?

Now that the Devin Survivor is over, can I put the Trivium Survivor up, or should I wait a while/are there others in the queue?
Just want to be sure :x

Set... are you going to update the OP?

Good idea, good opportunity to get known better in this band. I'm in. :tup
-
Set... are you going to update the OP?
Maybe at some point. It seems like nobody really cares about P/S anymore, so I'm pretty much done putting effort into this and having it go unnoticed :\
-
I was wondering earlier today, has anyone done a Genesis Survivor in recent history? I don't recall one but my memory can be a bit foggy, so I'm not sure if there has or not. If not, I'd like to start one up, since I've been on a big Genesis kick lately. I'm willing to postpone my Spock's Beard Survivor a bit to do a Genesis one, especially if SBv3 will be releasing the 11th SB album next summer.
-Marc.
-
I'd participate in a Genesis survivor, for most of the albums at least.

Great!!! I might start planning it soon, then, perhaps to start not long after the New Year.
My only problems would be how to handle B-Sides. From 67-70, there are a TON of them, so I'd have to be selective about some of them. Then from 1970 onward, there's quite a few more, mostly in the Collins-era, so I'd probably do a whole Survivor for just the B-Sides/Non-Album tracks. I might just do a whole Ray Wilson-"Era" Survivor and just include all 19 known released studio tracks from CAS/Singles of the time, so I'm not mixing Wilson-Era B-Sides with Collins-Era ones.
I'm not sure how it was done last time, but if anyone has suggestions about how to handle it, or can tell me what was done last time, that'd be great! Thanks guys and I'll let you know when I plan on starting it.
-Marc.

Me too. At least until Wind and Wuthering. I haven't listened to many of their stuff after PG and SH left.
-
My Helloween Survivor had ended few days ago, and I will start a Queensryche survivor in a few days, I know that it could be BIG downhere ;)
-
Looking forward to it, Cody. I need to listen to the EP and the debut album this weekend first though.
The Letter M: Do you have an ETA on that Genesis survivor?

I just listen to the EP, it's very solid release ;)
-
The Letter M: Do you have an ETA on that Genesis survivor?
I'd say as soon as my Marillion survivor is done, so possibly near the end of February. I'll probably gear-up fans on here to participate, and it'll likely be a daily-update survivor, meaning each round will only last a day, so it'll go by QUICK (mostly because I want to get to my Spock's Beard Survivor by Summer-time, in time for the band's new album).
-Marc.
-
James LaBrie - Static Impulse Survivor has just started.
-
Marc, any chance that the genesis survivor will start soon?
Also, is anybody running a Rush survivor? I haven't seen one in more than a year that I've been here and I'm sure a lot of people would like to participate in it.

Soon. I've been insanely busy with work and personal life in the last week or so. I originally planned on starting it last week, but I have been busy and haven't had a chance to post it. This weekend or next week!
-Marc.
-
Looking forward to it :)

Not sure how many people look at this sticky, but I'll post here none-the-less. Just before BCSL release, I did a "Favorite DT Moment" survivor. Rather than doing DT's catalog by song, I did it by their most impressive moments. Categories were as follows:
JLB Note (studio & live)
Guitar solo (studio & live)
Keyboard solo
Bass lick
Instrumental wankery
Riff (Heavy, medium and light)
Unison
I'm thinking about adding a category for JLB 'stanza' ... since he hasn't had too many impressive single note's in his singing since the accident.
Interest in following?
-
Any chance of getting a Pink Floyd survivor in the near future?

I usually run it, but I missed my typical February start date for some reason. If there's enough demand for it I'll run it again.
-
Anyone think a Flying Colors Survivor would be cool? I know they JUST released their debut album, but I'd like to do one sometime in the coming weeks if there's enough interest in it.
-Marc.

Jirpo has done Iron Maiden in the past. You should check with him before starting one. Usually once someone starts one they get dibs for doing it again.

OK.
How long time ago was it? I was quite sure that there has been one before.

Last spring/summer.

Last spring/summer.
Hmmm, maybe not long time enough to run it again.
-
I was thinking of reviving the Rush survivor that I used to run a few years back if people are game? Should hopefully coincide nicely with the release of Clockwork Angels.
-
I'm game.
-
Cool. It was pretty popular before, and hopefully interest will increase with the release of CA coming up.
EDIT: Having taken into account Shmev's views, probably won't begin this till the summer.
-
I'd be in for most of it. (Debut album - Signals and Vapor Trails - S&A) I'd stay out during the synth era stuff.
-
Hey guys, thinking about doing a Rage Against The Machine survivor sometime soon. Anyone interested? This thread isn't very popular right now.
-
just a quick note.
I was big on this section almost all of last year and checked it daily to come in and vote.
However the bands for the survivors this calander year have just not been my musical flavor.
Sorry.
Waiting for different stuff I guess.
-

I think someone tried one once. Don't recall it doing very well though.
-
I would love to do a Haken survivor. I will include the demo, Aquarius and Visions (maybe the demo last, since not many people will have heard it) and see how far we can get. I know there's quite a few people here who like them, so who would be interested? :)
-
So why did the Dream Theater survivor from last year not finish? When will the 2012 one start?

Or will the last year's survivor continue where it left off (Awake and FII if I remember correctly)?

How about a band survivor.....take the band list from GMD and set it up.
Porcupine Tree...MIGHT not win...but....it would be fun see them whittled down to the evental obvious four or five finalists.

Isn't that kind of like the best them competitions floydie (black_floyd) was trying to run last year?
-
I think someone should do a Nicky Spanjaards survivor for each DT song he covered.
Anyone want the job?
-
:rollin :tup
-
Alright, I'm going to start a Rammstein survivor. I hope that it will work, but if it won't, well then, too bad. I want to give it a try, however.
Don't know how helpful this is, as the active survivor threads are the first ten entries on this board anyway, but it can't hurt, right?
I'll set the first round up today, voting on the first album, Herzeleid.
-
Someone should get an Agalloch survivor started around here. That is, unless it has already been done (I wouldn't know since I rarely spend too much time in this sub-forum). Anyways, I'm just listening to The Mantle, and I know there are a lot of fans around here who would enjoy doing the survivor...
-
After I finish my Genesis Survivor, I'm going to revisit my DT Survivors I did a couple of years ago, including:
Multi-Movement Song Survivors
Twelve-Step Suite Movements Survivor
Twelve-Step Suite Songs Survivor
I think I had one or two more that I did, but I'm not at my home laptop to find out, but these are the ones I'll probably start with.
EDIT: The other DT Survivors that I did were:
Longest Songs
Shortest Songs
-Marc.

I've got a general question about a lot of the survivors on this forum, and I didn't want to post it on any of the specific survivor threads, so I'm asking it here.
I may have asked this before, but I've missed a lot of time posting here over the past few years, but I used to be very active on the P&S forums. What is with the practice of having album survivors without actually crowing a champion from each album? I mean, I get that that the final two advance to the band's "Final Survivor", but why not take the extra two days to let those two songs go head to head and crown a champion from each album, kind of like having a division champion in sports? Then regardless of who wins, both songs still move on.
I may have even asked this the last time I was around, but I don't remember what came of it. At the end of the day, Survivors are meant to be fun, and this isn't a slight on any of the survivor runners, just a personal opinion/suggestion to how to make it even better.

I have wondered that before, but in the 4 major Survivors I've done here (Neal Morse, Spock's Beard, Marillion and currently Genesis), I've run each album to find a Top Song for each album, but in the case of B-Sides and Consolations, I only ran it to the Top 2. I always felt it was more fun to see which of the Top 2 of an album would win against each other.

Do Pink Floyd. :dsotm:

I believe there is an annual Rush Survivor that is done by a certain poster here, although whom I cannot recall, but I believe it should be starting sometime in the next couple months. It'd be nice considering Rush is on tour for their new album right now, it would be a great time to start that Survivor.
Can anyone here recall who usually runs the Rush Survivor? I'd love to see that started real soon!

After I finish my Genesis Survivor, I'm going to revisit my DT Survivors I did a couple of years ago, including:
Multi-Movement Song Survivors
Twelve-Step Suite Movements Survivor
Twelve-Step Suite Songs Survivor
I think I had one or two more that I did, but I'm not at my home laptop to find out, but these are the ones I'll probably start with.
EDIT: The other DT Survivors that I did were:
Longest Songs
Shortest Songs
-Marc.
I think I will start these DT-Related Survivors not long after I finish my Genesis Survivor.
Afterwards, though, I think I will start my Neal Morse Survivor, which I took over from Quadrochosis and completed two years ago, but before Testimony 2 came out, and now with Momentum released, Neal has 2 more studio albums that I can add to the Survivor. Also to note - I'll be starting with Neal's FIRST TWO solo albums, the self-titled one and It's Not Too Late. While they are all very proggy, I feel like I should include them this time.
Long-term: after Neal Morse, I think I will run the Spock's Beard Survivor again, since by then, they will have hopefully released their 11th studio album. Between these two long-term survivors, I should be pretty well planned out for the rest of 2012 and most of 2013!
-Marc.
-
I guess I'll do Pink Floyd. Is there any sort of limit of survivors, or do people just post here stating that they're starting and the like?
-

I believe it was proposed that anyone who starts a major Survivor should only do one at a time, mostly to keep traffic down on the board.
Otherwise, feel free to do what you want with your PF Survivor. There's no limit to how you run it. Some people do 1-day rounds, others do 2 or more, and some only run each album to the Final 2 (which go to the Finals, while the 3rd place song goes to Consolations), while others, like me, run the albums to the end to determine the final ranking for an album.
-Marc.
-
Ok, I'll start when you finish the Genesis survivor :tup
-
I would like to continue the Queensrÿche survivor, that has been on hold for months. Is there some limit for the amount of ongoing survivors? Can I continue it now or should I wait until one of the current ones ends?
-
I was going to start my PF survivor once the Genesis one is done.
-
I'm thinking about making a LTE survivor.
-
I'm thinking about making a LTE survivor.
Pwetty pwease :)
-
In answer to DoC's question above... just look at the final results, and whichever song finishes higher, that's the one that 'won' the individual album. Deductive reasoning. Saves one (virtually meaningless) round of voting. And when you're doing something like a Genesis survivor, with what ... 15 albums? That'll shorten the survivor by anywhere from 2 weeks to a month depending on how fast the organizer is running it.
That's my thought at least.
-
Well i'll start the LTE survivor now i guess!
-
Has anyone done Alice in Chains survivors?
-
Has anyone done Alice in Chains survivors?
I did one several years ago. But I'm out of "survivor" mode now, so if you want to do it, feel free.
Hell, a lot of the time I forget that this subforum is even here.
-
:tup
I think I'm going to wait until the DT survivors calm down.
-
Just as an update to my Survivor Schedule:
Genesis Survivor 2012 - FINISHED! The Finals just ended with "Firth Of Fifth" finding itself at first. Fffffffffff....
Dream Theater: Twelve-Step Suite Songs Survivor 2012 - In Session! Four 2-day rounds to rank the 5 songs.
Dream Theater: Twelve-Step Suite Movements Survivor 2012 - Coming Next! 11 2-Day rounds to rank the 12 movements.
Dream Theater: Multi-Movement Songs Survivor - Afterwards! Six songs (ACOS/TKH/TOT/SDOIT/8VM/ITPOE), top-movement of each song goes to the Finals (may or may not include the Twelve-Step Suite Movement Survivor)
Dream Theater: Shortest Songs Survivor - Later on! Haven't done this one since before ADTOE came out - get to add "Far From Heaven"!
Dream Theater: Longest Songs Survivor - Much later! Again, not since before ADTOE, so "Breaking All Illusions" get added!
Neal Morse Survivor 2013 - SOOO far ahead... Starts with his self-title debut album all the way up to his most recent and 9th solo studio release Momentum
Spock's Beard Survivor 2013 - Probably sometime in the Spring/Summer season, hopefully after SB11 has been long released.
Transatlantic Survivor 2013 - Hopefully, by the time I get to this (Summer/Fall), the new TA album will have been released (or be close to it). I'm thinking for The Whirlwind, I'll include the 12 tracks of the main album, as well as the four original tracks on the 2nd disc, making a total of 16 tracks/options for the album.
...WHEW! That'll keep me busy for another year or more! :tup

I may start the League back in late December, Early January. No offense, but I prefer voting for songs rather than against them.
-
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what's the League?
-
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what's the League?
Not a stupid question at all.
The League is a format that I lifted from the sporting world. We have each song play a "season" of 20 Weeks. Each week, "all" of a given band's song are randomly paired to create matches. Players will vote for which song they like better in each match. Whichever song has more votes at the deadline gets a "win", loser get a "loss", and ties are ties. After the season, we'd have tournaments for each album, and then a huge tournament at the end to crown the League Champion.
I have done DT's in the past. I haven't seen it implemented for any other bands, but I would love to see the format phase out the survivors, but there is a lot of work involved in running one, so I could see why people wouldn't want to undertake it.
-

Cool! Any thought to doing Thunderdome again?

Thunderdome was someone else's baby. I don't fully remember how it was ran.

Oh wow - that sounds involved, but cool at the same time. Wouldn't mind seeing that pop up at some point in the near future.
-
I usually don't do it while the Dream Theater Survivor is going on. The Unofficial schedule is Survivor July - December and the League January - June. But real life issues can push the start/stop times ahead or behind. But that's okay. It's all about having fun.
-
Ah, gotcha. Hope to see it sometime. :)

hhhmmm... I asked a few months back, and I coulda swore someone said it was yours, and your sabbatical was likely the reason it wasn't going.
BTW... good to have you back.

Thanks man. Means a lot.
I think that Thunderdome was the brainchild of Scurvy Dreams.

That's my thought at least.
It's certainly a fairly sensible way of looking at it but the problem is that we're looking at a scenario where we're trying to decide what song is liked more out of the two remaining songs despite the fact that more than a third of the voters voted to eliminate neither of those two songs.
Since it's impossible for any song that would end up in a final round with only 2 songs to have received any more than ~33.3% of the votes from the previous round, that means that it's impossible for any song to be invincible against being voted out in a final round even if zero people voted for it in the 3-song round assuming roughly the same amount of people vote in that final round.
A good way to still decide an album's champion and avoid having to run that final round would be to:
1. Don't use the poll option for the final (3 song) round.
2. Have folks just submit lists of those 3 songs with #1 being their favorite and #3 being their least favorite.
3. The band with the most #3 votes is eliminated and ranked as that album's #3 song.
4. Whatever song has the most #2 votes out of the two songs that did not receive the most #3 votes is that album's runner up.
I realize it seems weird to not crown the song with the most #1 votes as its album's champion but that's because the format of a survivor is to rank songs by penalizing them for voters not liking them rather than rewarding them for voters liking them.

I have no fucking clue what you just said.

Um... yeah, count me in with jingle.san.

CURRENTLY DOING SYMPHONY X SURVIVOR!
-
As a heads up, after I am done my DT Multi-Movement Songs Survivor, I will be doing 2 more DT-Related Survivors:
DT Shortest Songs Survivor
DT Longest Songs Survivor
Each will have 11 songs, one from each album proper, plus 1 song from The Majesty Demos, and 1 Non-album song.
Just a couple more fun DT-related Survivors before I begin my MASSIVE Neal Morse Survivor, which should take quite a few months to run to completion!
-Marc.
-
I forgot I was going to do the DT Survivors I listed above... hmmm. Anyone still interested in them? If I get at least 3 responses by the end of the day today, I will go ahead with both.
Also, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a RUSH Multi-Movement Survivor? I did that one a few years ago too and it was pretty fun! It would include: By-Tor And The Snowdog, The Necromancer, The Fountain of Lamneth, 2112, Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage, Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, La Villa Strangiato, and Natural Science.
-Marc.
-
I think the two DT ones would be fun. Who's gonna do the regular Rush survivor?
-

I'm not sure who does the Rush survivor, but I know it hasn't been done this year. I can only assume someone will do it in 2013 now that Clockwork Angels has been out for about half a year.
-Marc.
-
Marc... you know I love ya and all, but PLEASE proceed with your Neal Morse survivors. IMO, there are way too many DT survivors going right now - not including splent's unfinished ones.

The DTF'ers have spoken. In that case, I shall proceed with my Neal Morse Survivor next week. I just can't start it now as I've been crazy busy this week/weekend, so starting Monday (I hope), I will begin with Neal's self-titled debut album.
-Marc.
-
As for my DT 'Moment' Survivor, 'tis almost done. Just gonna launch the Consolation round this weekend, then Finals in Jan.

:tup
-
Hey, since I can't seem to find even an old one, would anyone be interested in me running a Pain of Salvation survivor?

Would anyone here be interested in a Megadeth Survivor?
Unfortunately I don't know Pain of Salvation very well so I couldn't participate in that one. :-\

Would anyone be interested in survivors of these bands? Just bouncing off some ideas that maybe I can do (or someone else) after the PF survivor.
Yes
Sonata Arctica
Van Halen
U2
Boston

I would definitely participate in a Sonata Arctica survivor! :tup I ran one a few years ago and it'd be interesting to see how the results turn out this time.
-
Put me down for Sonata as well. I have relatively unorthodox views of their catalog so that should be fun  I can also help you to put together that first run of non-album songs since I know their discog inside out.
-
^I didn't include the non-album songs in the survivor when I ran it, but we could do that this time, except maybe for the covers, 'cause those aren't original SA songs and none of them are remarkably great IMO. But yeah, the results would probably differ a bit from the last time since you're here now and I have changed my mind about some songs - for example hearing The Misery live made me realize what a great song it is.
-

-Marc.
I think the HOF nod is enough reason to do a new Rush survivor. I haven't seen one on here since I've been around, nor does one come up in a search. Rather than the multi-movement songs, I think all their albums post-MP would be good since they all have songs of roughly the same length (i.e. no multi-movement).
-
Has anyone ever ran a Led Zeppelin survivor here? I think that would be a good one that a lot of people would be able to participate in :tup
-
Sounds like a great idea, now that I've finally started listening to them :tup
I don't believe I've seen one during my years here.

DT the League 2013 will be starting
early today due to the DT Survivor becoming inactive. It's go time.
-

Yeah, it's been done, but I forget who did it. Obviously, I'm in.

Sweet - may start that soon, just wanted to let some of the DT survivors calm down first.

Rush Survivor to begin 14th January. After handing over the reins for one year, I have '(re)assumed control'.
-
Anyone want an Emerson Lake & Palmer OR The Mars Volta survivor once my Symphony X one is finished?
-
ELP, yes.
-
Okay folks - when should I start the Alice in Chains survivor?
Oh, and dopey question - it's okay to vote in your own survivor, yes? :blush
-

Start it whenever you're ready.
I always felt that if you're putting in the effort to run a survivor, than you should be able to vote as well.
-
Thanks much for the response, dude - I'll probably end up starting them either some point this weekend or next week.
-
My SX survivor is done. Thinking of Riverside. But I'm gonna take a break first.
-
Sounds good. :tup
-
As an update on my Neal Morse Survivor, it's not entering Consolation, and a week and a half after today, it'll start into The Finals. I anticipate the survivor to finish around the end of the month!
Then sometime at the beginning of April, I will begin my Spock's Beard Survivor, just in time for the new album to have been out for awhile (and by the time I get to BNADS, it'll have been out for a couple months).
-Marc.
-
YES, Spock's Beard survivor :D
-
YES, Spock's Beard survivor :D
:lol :metal
Yes, this will be my 2nd time running the SB Survivor! I started the first one almost 2 years ago (the beginning of April 2010).
This time around, I will NOT be splitting it up into Neal-Era and Nick-Era - it will be a fully integrated SB Survivor, with all 11 albums, with 26 songs in the Finals (2 from each album, but top 4 from Snow, and of course top 2 from Consolations). It will occupy the rest of spring and possibly all of summer!
-Marc.

Bands I can do survivors on:

The Mars Volta

I wouldn't mind hosting a short Survivor myself. I'd like to do a Steven Wilson solo survivor, but it's far too early to include The Raven That Refused to Sing, it having only been out for a week. But it would be possible in, say, 3 months.
But until then, would anyone take part if I did a Blackfield survivor? They're on 3 albums now.

I'd wait to do Blackfield. I'd say, do SW first, in a couple months, THEN Blackfield because they're supposed to have a new album coming out in April.
-Marc.
-
I'm up for running an Iron Maiden survivor, if there's enough interest.
-
YO! GUYS! In the last few months, I've grown incredibly obsessed with Battlestar Galactica, to a point beyond fanboyness. I'm interested in running a Battlestar Galactica character survivor, would there be enough participation to even try this? I know we have a few BSG fans on this board, but they may be few and far between, this show did air years ago. So, BSG character survivor. What say you, DTF?
-
In about TWO WEEKS, I will once again begin my Annual Spock's Beard Survivor! 2013 Edition! This will be a WHOLE Survivor, covering songs from ALL 11 studio albums, as well as some B-sides. And for Special Editions, bonus tracks will be included in that album's survivor (Which really only applies to FE, Octane, X and BNADS).
A proper Results & Discussion Thread will be happening shortly...
-Marc.
-
Hope you guys enjoyed the PF survivor. After this final round, I will start up the Sonata Arctica survivor in a few days.

Sorry I just realised that we might have needed to wait to start survivors judgeing by the posts above. Sorry mods.
Since I'm the undisputed bad boy of DTF, I did the same thing - just went ahead and started one on a whim two weeks ago. Nobody's complained, mods have participated, and more to the point, the OP's not been updated since October 2011. I think you'll be all right.
-
I know it's only June, but I'll be planning on doing a TRANSATLANTIC Survivor after the new album is released early next year.
Anyone have any suggestions for me to do a 'shorter' survivor between the end of August to about February '14?
Recently, I did Marillion, Neal Morse, and currently Spock's Beard. I'm thinking of doing one for The Tangent (if there is enough interest) since they're releasing a new album this summer.
-Marc.

I honestly think that you could do a Transatlantic Survivor now while we wait for a new album. Then you could do one a year from now when we've had time to digest the new album. Just an idea.
-
The Alice in Chains survivor is at a temporary stoppage due to their new album dropping last Tuesday. I'll pick it back up for the latest album and finals either at the end of this month or after the 4th of July.
-
I'm thinking about doing a James Labrie survivor. Was looking to start in a couple of weeks in correlation with the new album. It would only be 5 albums long. How long do I have to wait?
-
So I think I might do a Big Big Train survivor if I can get at LEAST 5 participants on the albums...maybe. If not, then I may pick another band, like The Tangent, to do a survivor on after I am done with Spock's Beard next month.
-Marc.
-
Riverside survivor beginning this Friday!
Edit:Fuck it. Let's do this now.

Likely so. It has reached the penultimate round just now. Just 5 more days (since I want to make the last round last 3 days, to ensure everybody can get their votes in, something that seems to be the norm recently).
-
Alright. I think I'll start it somewhere next week, let's say 13th of September.
-
Rush Survivor back up and running.
-
Alice in Chains survivor is done.
-
I want to do the Haken survivor again and will probably start in the next couple of days. The Mountain has been out for long enough now for people to know the songs. I'm curious as to how they will stand up against the results of the last survivor. Since a couple of survivors are done now, I'll start soon, I think, if that's okay.
-
I've never run a band Survivor. Would like to do Avantasia. Really, the only band I love enough to do, that has enough popularity, -that hasn't been done, and has enough albums to justify it. Circus Maximus too maybe, but only 3 albums.
Any interest in either of these?
-

I'd get involved with an Avantasia survivor
-
I'd like to start a Blackfield survivor in January, if that's OK. I'm booking it now in case a load of survivors want to get going at the start of the New Year.
Four albums, each with 10-11 songs, should make for a decent-length tournament, and no "bonus song slump" which befell my SW solo Survivor earlier this year.
-
I'd be up for a blackfield survivor. :)
-
I would absolutely participate in an Avantasia survivor. I like Circus Maximus, but I could only do the first two albums.

I would participate in Avantasia survival as well.

I find survivors to be the perfect opportunitiy to get to know a new album. You get to hear lots of opinions and discussions about the album right after you get into it. I first listened to the whole Phil Collins era of Genesis this way. :)
-
Alright... I'll start it up next weekend.

Nah, that was my stupid phone auto-correction.
-
I know this is a way's away, but I'd like to announce that I will be running a Transatlantic Survivor in February. With the new album out at the end of January, I figure a month or so after it's release, I'll get to the album survivor for it and hopefully that will be enough time for fans to digest it initially.
Til then, I'm not sure what to run. I've thought about doing an Epics Survivor like I have done before for Rush and Dream Theater separately. I haven't run a survivor in a couple months and I miss it, so if anyone has any ideas for bands/albums/themes for a survivor I could run for 4-8 weeks, let me know! If not, I might think of something in the next day or two.
-Marc.
-
I'd definitely be up for a Transatlantic survivor!
-
Blackfield Survivor is underway! :)
-
I'm going to start Sonata Arctica survivor after the Transatlantic one will end, if everyone is fine with it. There were a few people interested in a band thread in General Music Discussion and I hope a few more will jump on it along the way.
-
I don't know if anyone reads this thread anymore, but I'd like to start a Liquid Tension/Trio Experiment survivor. I know it might've been done before, but I haven't seen one here for as long as I've been on the forum, and other bands get survivors every so often, even if no new material has been released from them.
Any interest?
-
A quick look at page one sees a lot a threads for DT, a few for Sonata Arctica, and one for Amorphis.....
Who wants to run some survivors/tournaments/heal hurt/ etc? Let's go!
-
The Amorphis survivor has been finished for a while now :)

I thought about maybe doing a Mastodon survivor, but I don't even own their first album yet.
EDIT: oops double post
-
Are there any people who would be interested in a Periphery survivor? I'd be up for running one if atleast more than 5 people are interested :lol
-
i'd participate, sure, tho a lot of periphery songs blend together for me and i've barely listened to clear
-
Count me in for the Periphery survivor.
EDIT: Although it's been a while since I've listened to an entire Periphery album, what album would you start with? I'd like to give the first one some listens before the survivor starts.

I'd probably go with how the albums and EPs were released. So Periphery → Icarus EP → Periphery II. → Clear → Juggernaut (which I would probably split into Alpha and Omega).

That would make four of us. Not sure that's really enough for a survivor, especially if someone leaves for a week or two.
-
After the Devin Survivor is done, who'd be up for doing a Coheed survivor? Perfect time for it with their next album coming out this month :lol
-
I've been trying to get into Coheed, so it would definitely be a nice way for me to fully check out their work. I've always liked what I've heard from them, but never found the time to truly digest their albums.
-
as with devin they do have an album i'm barely familiar with and need to check out more (that being their first) so we can embark on this journey together for about one album
-

Are you gonna be hosting the Coheed survivor Parama? It'll be incredibly lonely here in the survivor section with both your and mine survivor ending.

i've also been doing a roulette for about two months now too, ssshhh, shhhh :hat

Just as a heads up, I will be doing another Spock's Beard Survivor after my Neal Morse Survivor is done. It will cover all 12 studio albums, B-Sides/Bonus Disc songs, and the usual Consolation and Finals rounds.
In the long term, after SB, I may do Genesis again if there's enough interest in doing it, or Rush (because I think it's been awhile since a Rush survivor has been done, IIRC), or perhaps even Yes, though the latter two I have not done before. In the last four years, I've only done Marillion, Flying Colors (twice), Genesis, Neal Morse (now twice), Spock's Beard (soon to be twice), and Transatlantic.
After that, I will start Marillion later next year after their next studio album is out. That should carry me through 2016.
-Marc.
-
I mentioned this in the other thread, but I didn't get any responses, really, so I'll post it here: Would there be any interest in an Iron Maiden survivor? The last one was in 2013, and the new album has come out since then. If there's interest, I would like to run it, but if no one wants to do it, I'm not going to bother.
-
Yeah, I'd be on board. I'd have to relisten their debut though.
-
I'm planning on doing the annual Haken survivor once again (even though they haven't released anything new) this November.
-
I'm planning on doing the annual Haken survivor once again (even though they haven't released anything new) this November.
One of the few bands which's survivor I can participate in all the way :tup
-
I'm planning to do an Avenged Sevenfold survivor if enough people are interested, if you are, I'd like you to say if you want to include Sounding the Seventh Trumpet on the survivor or not.
-
Dunno if there's a limit on how many survivors can be held at the same time, but if there's no problem, I'd start the Meta-StevenWilson survivor this weekend ;D
-
Dunno if there's a limit on how many survivors can be held at the same time, but if there's no problem, I'd start the Meta-StevenWilson survivor this weekend ;D
I mean, I don't know anything about any imposed limit, but here's what I think:
The past couple of months there have really been four going on: Nightwish, Neal Morse, Devin Townsend and Periphery. Periphery and Devin Townsend I believe just ended. Nightwish is going into finals within the week. Neal Morse, I believe, is on the final album. Essentially, all the survivors that have been running the past few months have either just ended or are approaching their end.
DT the League is about to start up, which is a lot of Polls/Survivors traffic. IDontNotDoThings is starting King Crimson. Sacul is starting Steven Wilson. The Letter M will replace Neal Morse with Spock's Beard once that finishes. Evermind will do the same with Kamelot replacing Nightwish (with Beyond the Bridge possibly intervening). Elite is starting Haken soon. So both the currently ongoing survivors are going to be followed by additional survivors by the same organizer, while a few organizers who have not been running survivors are about to start them up.
We can look at these as slots that are being filled. Here's what we have:
Nightwish (almost finals) ---> Beyond the Bridge/Kamelot (same organizer)
Neal Morse (almost consolations) ---> Spock's Beard (same organizer)
Devin Townsend (finished) ---> King Crimson (different organizer)
Periphery (finished) ---> Haken (different organizer)
[EMPTY] ---> Steven Wilson
So, with all this transition going on, we're basically going from 4 survivors to 5 survivors plus DT the League. Plus, Train of Naught is toying with the idea of Avenged Sevenfold and I'm toying with the idea of Iron Maiden.
Personally, I think 7 survivors plus DT the League would be a bit much, while 5 plus DT the League is a good amount. I don't know what anyone else thinks about this, really, so I might be totally in the minority. But personally I think 7+DTtL would be a bit overwhelming.
With that in mind, I'm probably going to hold off on starting Iron Maiden until something finishes. Maybe after Elite's Haken survivor is over, since that one won't be a super-long one anyway as there are just three albums and an EP. I'm not trying to tell anyone else (Sacul, Train of Naught) what to do or not do, I just don't want to personally be the one to flood the Poll/Survivors forum.
-
Great summary 425. I think we should prioritize survivors that cover just a couple of albums (like the Haken one), instead of those of bands with huge discographies -even if it cockblocks me :lol - and artists with huge following here. So out of the survivors that have either just started/are going to begin soon, they'd cover (at least) this amount of records each:
Kamelot: 12
Beyond The Bridge: 1
Haken: 3 (+Restoration and maybe their demo)
Spock's Beard: 12
King Crimson: 13
Iron Maiden: 16
A7X: 6
Wilson (28): 4 solo, 4 with Blackfield, 8 with No-man, 2 Continuum, 1 Storm Corrosion, 3 IEM, and 8 Bass Communion records wtf - PT has already been done so there's no need to run that one again. But since I'm not familiar with half of those, we'd have polls on which albums to vote first, so we'll just end up doing just 12-15 records.
-
We should keep in mind that DT the league is going to bing lots of people to the poll/survivors subforum that usually don't, so I think we can get away with 5-7 survivors in total without having a shortage on voters. It's still a big transition though, I think we should start with 5.
Oh and about the A7X survivor, I don't have any rush either so I'll just wait until the time is right. :yarr
-
You can probably make it 9 albums for Kamelot, since I doubt anyone will vote for the first three albums. :lol
And I'm in no rush either. I can always postpone the next survivor if we get too much traffic here.
-
Just did some calculating, and it seems like my Neal Morse Survivor should end just before New Year's Eve, so I'll be starting Spock's Beard on or just after the New Year. There's still one more round left after the current one for the current album, then 7 rounds of Consolation, and finally 19 rounds of the Finals, so it'll be a good two months of rounds left.
As for Spock's Beard, the last time I did it, it took me four months, but with the new album, it'll add at least 10-13 more rounds, so it'll probably last me from January through May.
-Marc.

reminder: i'm starting coheed sometime this month :P
a.k.a I should start listening to the stuff I don't know
-
I only know Welcome Home, but it was enough to convince me I should know more.
-
i'll start the survivor once i get more familiar with SSTB then bcuz that's the only one I've never been able to get too into (tho I don't remember 75% of YOTBR either so :lol)
-
Good summary there; as for Haken, it'll be 3 albums, the EP and the demo, followed by Consolatipn rounds and Finals and it won't take that long. If I can get a green light, I will start it this week.
-
Does this thread even get monitored anymore? I think people can just start survivors anytime they want nowadays.
-
I see no reason for there to be a limit on the number of survivors. As long as people are participating and having fun.... let's do as many as we want!
For Kamelot..... I'm a huge fan (seeing them for the 4th time in a few weeks), but would be fine with the survivor not including the first few albums.
For A7X... I just could never get into the Trumpets.
-

Yeah me neither, I might skip it.

I'm thinking of starting right with The Fourth Legacy.

I will be kicking off A7X next week, creating the main thread sometime today!

I will be kicking off SW next week, creating the main thread sometime tomorrow!
Fixed for me :P

And fixed for me as well.
-
Woohoo! P&S is alive and kicking again! :metal
-
Dangit, the only band I'm kicking is A7X, kick your own bands.
-
I would also like another TesseracT survivor at some point. I have never hosted one before though, but might try it out if there's no one else. And if there's enough interest of course.
-
I think this forum is more geared towards metal bands, so it might not be worth doing survivors for (neo-)prog bands like Pendragon, IQ or Arena. Have those bands had survivors done for them before?
-
I might check out some IQ in the near future, but I definitely won't be able to vote for a survivor very accurately for quite some time.
-
at this point i'm just gonna start the coheed survivor at the start of the year, nobody will complain right okay
-

Start the damn survivors of the bands I'm familiar with. :lol

I know 2 Coheed songs..
..
Yea I'm with the russian.

I know 2 Coheed songs..
You're missing out.

I'm with Evermind - listened to one of their albums (Afterman: Ascension), and thought it was pretty generic metal with an annoying singer :P
-

You're missing out.
Hell yes I am, I've only known one song for a long time but didn't know it was by C&C, then 425 sent me that one Key Entity song, Demon the Destitute or something, and I enjoyed it a lot.
I will check out the band but I would probably not be able to participate in a survivor as I don't know their songs yet
-
an annoying singer :P
:censored :censored :censored
Domino The Destitute is amazing, but I prefer the first three albums. They are flawless start to finish.
-
I quite dislike high-pitched vocalists so whatever :P
-
I've been thinking, would there be any interest in a Rammstein or TesseracT survivor? I'd kinda like to run either of these at some point.
-
TesseracT +1 here, Animals as Leaders also :)
-
Rammstein, though I'd only participate on Mutter by now :P
-
Could participate in the TesseracT one, gives me a reason to check out "One".
-

How about no.

Just started the thread for the Iron Maiden survivor (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=45762.0). I do have a few technical questions that I would like potential participants to help me answer in that thread.
-
I will do a survivor on fast food places for burgers next.
-
:lol Well I'll certainly vote whenever I can.
-
I will do a survivor on fast food places for burgers next.
Just make sure you include a Hardee's/Carl's Jr. option, depending on which end of the country folks are in. I assume the typical places will be there, like McD's, BK, and Wendy's, but I also would like to add Five Guys. It might be a Mid-Atlantic/regional place, but they're pretty good.
-Marc.
-
I seriously only know McDonalds and Burger King, that's it. This should be one hell of a survivor
-
I seriously only know McDonalds and Burger King, that's it.
Me too :lol
-
What about Carl's jr or in n out?
In n Out should be pretty famous
-
Depends on the country, I guess McD and BK are the only worldwide ones?
-
Subway too :P
-
Haha, it's not a burger place!
But if you insist.
-
Is there a rule of how many survivors I can run?
-
As many as you can update regularly :P
-
Still, I think it's better to run one or two simultaneously at best so the Polls / Survivors section doesn't become too clogged.
-

Yeah, no kiddin'. There was a time where this place was pretty much deserted, but I think since the Periphery survivor stopped, we've gotten Spock's Beard, Kamelot, Megadeth, Avenged Sevenfold, Iron Maiden, Coheed and Cambria (for a couple days :neverusethis:), Haken, King Crimson, all on top of the DT league. Also the Hurt or Heal polls, so yea there is no real limit but keep in mind we have a stickied thread to keep track of survivors for a reason. (Admittedly, not a very active one, I think the user who started it is no longer active on the forums.)
-

Never even hear about either of these. But I'm from sweden, so it's not so weird.

Kk thanks guys.
and ink, yeah in America it's very famous. I can understand.

And oopsies.
XD
Sorry bout that Sacul.

Well I've been saying Kamelot Survivor was my intention pretty much since early 2015 when I started Nightwish. I don't have anything against people who are spontaneously deciding they want to run a Survivor, because well, why would I? It's fun and unexpected and it breathes life in this forum section, but I just wanted to point out I'm planning my Survivors in advance so it's always no surprise what I'm going to host next.
So overall, I'm aiming at running one huge Survivor a year, and I've got a good idea for 2017 already... as long as I'm not cockblocked on it during this year.
-
Out of curiosity, how much interest would there be in an Anthrax survivor (considering the new album & everything)?
-
I would be interested in an Anthrax survivor for sure
-
Still, I think it's better to run one or two simultaneously at best so the Polls / Survivors section doesn't become too clogged.
So... like now?

Yeah, the rating polls have taken over. But easy enough to scroll around them to find the survivors.
-
True, but it can be frustrating when rounds of a survivor that are still open for voting are getting pushed more than halfway down the page. As I look at it now, there are active Iron Maiden, Spock's Beard and Redemption rounds that are on the bottom third of the page, buried almost exclusively by rating threads.

When I started the ratings, I encouraged people to post in the ratings thread on the DT Forum with the intention that these polls would sink. But a lot of people have been replying with their ratings. If I could, I would lock the rating polls from comments.
Perhaps another solution would be for all the main threads for the survivors to be stickied, and have the survivor runner link to the current round as a reply.
Me not being a moderator, I can't explore either option.
But I will say that in the survivors that I am taking part in (DT/Kamelot/Redemption), participation hasn't seemed to drop off since the decent of the ratings.
-
I'm not necessarily suggesting that "something has to be done about this!" I don't think that there's a deeply serious problem here, but there is a reason for people to be somewhat frustrated (and I've seen people express frustration about this in survivor threads). I'm just commenting on the state of affairs, which is that, yes, the Polls/Survivors is pretty full right now, and that the reason for that largely has to do with the rating threads.
My only suggestion would be that maybe the rating threads could come out more slowly. My observation has been that after a few days, few people comment on them and they do sink. But you seem to be posting about 10-15 of them a day, so it just takes up a lot of the front page by sheer volume.

I'm taking you up on your suggestion. I only posted 4 today. Let's see if that helps out.

That is much better, thank you. All active survivors' current rounds plus today's rating polls are all in the top third of the page. :tup

Apparently not it seems except jjrock88.

-
I do. I just don't really care about the current survivors and survivor options.
-
Just out of curiosity, how many people actually view this thread when there's a new post?
I try to, if only to see which survivors are ending and/or coming up.
As an update to mine, since I'm entering the final studio album for Spock's Beard tomorrow (then B-Sides, then Consolation, then Finals), I wanted to see if anyone was interested in one of the following:
A Genesis Survivor
A Yes Survivor
A Rush Survivor
I'm not sure when the last ones of these were done but I know it has been awhile. I'm pretty sure I did the last Genesis Survivor. I'd be down for Rush, considering that 2112 is now 40 years old, and the band has all but retired from the stage, and possibly the studio, doing one more Survivor for them might be a good send-off.
Then again, doing one for Yes or Genesis might also seem pretty good, especially for the latter since they'll definitely not be making any more albums.
After whichever of those that I might do, I still plan on doing Marillion again since their next album should be out by then. Perhaps even before then, I may do a Frost* Survivor if anyone has interested enough in them for me to do one.
Speaking of bands that may or may not garner enough interest here for a Survivor, what about Big Big Train? They have a new album out in a couple of months so it'd be fun to do one for them, too, if I had enough participants!
-Marc.

By all means, go ahead if you'd like! I've just been wanting to for a couple of years now but never found the right time to do it, even having been a fan of them for over a decade now. My version of the survivor would include ABWH and Keystudio in addition to the other 19 Yes studio albums, so it'd be a pretty long one, but totally worth it.
If Yes is taken, then I may do Rush or Genesis, depending on which band will get more participants (probably Rush).
-Marc.
-
Any interest in a Metallica survivor? I want to try my hand at running one and I figure that doing it with my all time favorite band would be the best way to go.
-
I'm sure there would be enough interest in Metallica
-
It would give me reason to listen to Metallica after so many years, so why not.
-
According to this, a Metallica survivor would be very popular!
https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=42013.msg1837806#msg1837806
-
I'm all for a Metallica survivor! I would just sit out the St. Anger one, since I must have heard that album exactly only one and then recoiled away in horror. But I'm all for the agony of having to pick only 2 songs from Ride and Master, hehe!
-
I'm glad to see that there's interest. I'll get it started within a couple of days.
-
I've just thought of something...what happened to the Mega Steven Wilson Survivor? It's just slipped out of existence.

Is anyone willing to participate in a Rush or Kansas survivor?

Is anyone willing to participate in a Rush or Kansas survivor?
Someone here already does an annual Rush Survivor, but I cannot recall when they last did it.
I also cannot recall if anyone has done Kansas before, but this year would be a good one to do it, but probably for later in the year when the new album comes out.
-Marc.
-
I've just thought of something...what happened to the Mega Steven Wilson Survivor? It's just slipped out of existence.
College took over me plus roulette so I had to prioritize stuff - I promise to get back to it probably around July when I'm less busy :P
-
Camel anyone ?
-
OOOH, I'll participate! I enjoy Camel.
-
Camel anyone ?
The cigarettes? Oh yes.
-
Oh, then will I be able to run a ELP survivor or is that taken also?
-
Would anyone be interested in Mastodon survivor?
-
I'd participate in Leviathan, Crack the Skye and Once More Round the Sun for sure, have yet to check out the rest but if there's going to be a survivor I'll probably do that.
-

I'm not planning to do it too soon, just asking for now. If I do it I may do it in alternate order(reverse chronological maybe) because I think their newer would have more participants.
-
My Spock's Beard Survivor is winding down and wrapping up, so I'm going back through this thread and reading what I wanted to do next. Looking back, I was stuck between Rush or Genesis, and I know I've run the Genesis Survivor on here before, but I wouldn't mind doing Rush.
What do you guys think?
-Marc.
-
I'd be a part of the Rush survivor for sure
-
Me, too, for the most part.

How much interest would there be in survivors for either Frost* or Beardfish?
-
Is anyone interested in an Opeth survivor. They deserve all the love they can get. helped me through dark times...
-
I wouldn't be able to do all albums, but I'd try to participste from Blackwater Park foward. After that I know most of the albums well enough.
-
I'd be in from My Arms - Watershed.
-

I'd be in from Still Life onwards.
-

This.
-
I already asked in the Periphery thread, but figured I might here aswell.
Would anyone be interested / participate in a second Periphery survivor?
-
Like I said in the Periphery thread, I'm in.
-
I had a random idea. It's too early for it, but better early than late, hehe!
How about a "Best album of 2016" survivor? since there are many genres and many albums out there, there should be first a nominations thread, where albums that get nonimated at least... twice? three times? even more? get a slot in the finals (it makes no sense to have 253 albums that nobody knows about, at least more than 1 or 2 people must show interest for that album), and then it would be a finals-only (obviously) survivor.
Dream Theater's The Astonishing should not be included for obvious reasons, it would just polarize the survivor too much. Or maybe it should be included after all? anyway, it's still early as I said, but if someone wants to have a little December fun... (or early January to allow for late releases)
-
That would definitely be interesting, but I guess the problem would be that there are tons of people voting on albums that they haven't heard, so it's not really a good representation, I guess? I'd still join in though.
-
Yeah, that would be the main problem, that's why I suggested a nomination thread where only albums that at least 2, 3 or 4 people show to know about... it would be interesting to see on which kind of album the common ground lies!
-

A nomination thread would be easy. You could do it poll-style, actually. Maybe let voters vote for X-number of albums, and start with a list of like 50 albums they can choose from. If you get at least 20 people to vote, and give each of them like 10 votes, that'd be 200 votes total between 50 albums, and I think you'd get a good spread of albums that get at least 2 or more votes.
Then from there, take the albums that got a decent amount of votes, and start with the survivor from there, maybe with the 15 or 20 albums that got the most votes.
-Marc.
-
Would be pretty cool but impossible to execute. Best bet is to just do the annual "Post your favorite albums of 2016" thread in GMD and compile a list based on that I think, I think that would be feasible.
-

I call dibs on this thread if possible, I was planning to run it in 2014 and 2015 and someone always posted it ahead of me. And the worst thing is, they never counted the results after the voting was done. :-\
I don't mind if anyone else wants to do it, as long as we get the results tallied afterwards.

gauging interest: how many people would participate in a Caligula's Horse or Thank You Scientist survivor? would be including the EPs in both of those.
i dunno if they're popular enough to have much interest but I wanna run a small survivor for a band i really like, i dunno :lol
-
Thank You Scientist survivor when
Make Like A Tree (Get Out) for the winz

let me remind you how the Coheed survivor ended up :'(

So I might resurrect the SW survivor if there's still interest on it :P
-
Maybe just stick to SW and PT, without all the other side-projects. Those are what killed it in the first place.

nobody cares about coheed atm but TYS and caligula's horse are both decently popular here as of late or at least it feels that way

Mmnn, maybe a separate survivor for his side projects too? Well, I'll try resurrect it tomorrow.
-
So, as was discussed in DoC's Dream Theater thread, I will be running a new iteration of the Dream Theater Survivor starting probably in mid-December (unless someone more qualified wants to challenge me for it).

I care about Coheed but the problem was I didn't yet when the survivor happened.

Just listening to The Yes Album when I suddenly remembered we got quite some way through a Yes survivor. What happened there? I don't remember it being completed.

As a bump/reminder, I will be doing the Dream Theater 2017 Survivor, beginning in the New Years (either on New Year's Eve or Day), and will precede it with an Albums Survivor! If there's time, I may resurrect some of my other DT-related mini-Survivors that I have done in the past - Twelve-Step Suit Movements, Twelve-Step Suite Songs, All Multi-Movement Songs, DT Openers, DT Closers, and maybe others if there's demand for them.
Hopefully doing all of this will revitalize my love for DT as, even though they released an album earlier this year, I've really strayed away from listening to them in recent years.
-Marc.
-
Marc, I'll be sure to participate! I'm fairly positive this is going to be awesome.
Also, as a brief reminder, I'm going to start Ayreon/Arjen Lucassen Survivor next year. The actual voting will begin once Kamelot Survivor is over, but I have a few things I want to run before we proceed with the voting, so the threads will begin to appear well in advance. Keep an eye on the Polls / Survivors section at the end of December and/or the beginning of January. I won't say much about it now (though I spilled some information to one or two people already), but I'm really excited for this. I hope we can gather a decent crowd of voters for this Survivor.
-
I would like to start a Pain Of Salvation survivor starting next year. I think there will be enough people to vote. The survivor will include also the new upcoming album, we will vote for it on April more or less, doing polls lasting 1 day. I think we will be familiar with the new album at that moment
-
With the Opeth survivors wrapping up, I was wondering if anyone was interested in a Symphony X survivor? Like Opeth, SX has been completed at 2012 and I think 4 years is good enough for people to participate.
-
I'm up for Symphony X!!
-
I would join too with Symphony X!
I'd love also a power metal one (Blind Guardian and Avantasia the most), but I'm afraid there's not enough following for that.
-
Ditto.
-
I just realized that this forum is now being overrun with Prog Metal bands, not that that's a bad thing! Opeth is almost done, with Haken not far behind, while Dream Theater, Symphony X, Ayreon, and Pain Of Salvation have all recently started.
All of these great bands getting survivors now is making me want to go back and really dive into prog metal some more (at least, more than recent DT and Haken from last year). I may not be able to participate in these new survivors (as I don't feel knowledgeable enough to rightfully vote in many of the albums), but I want to thank everyone else who is running them for doing so! Let's all keep up the good work and hope 2017 is a great year for survivors here! :tup

Although it hasn't been an year, I was thinking if Opeth fans would be interested in a Mega Opeth Survivor? I know this is Dream Theater forums, but it isn't against the rules so why not? It should be interesting. I won't do only albums and songs but maybe instrumental passages, best instrumentals, best vocal album, etc among others. The problem is participants. Would you be willing to participate in this huge survivor?
I think it will be fun.
-
I think there should be time before another Opeth survivor is run, hasn't been long since the last one :P
-
Aren't you already running a survivor?
-
Oh I won't be running it now. If people agree to it, I can prepare the Opeth Survivor For around this September for it.
And yeah once SX gets finished.
-
you should send tomislav a song
-
As with the previous one I'd participate in album rounds from Blackwater Park and forward. I don't think I know their music well enough to dive into those deeper survivors though, like specific sections and stuff.
-
Well, if somebody is up to, you can continue with the steven wilson survivor - whether just covering his solo career or his whole discography, it's up to you.
-
I'm thinking, after the Dream Theater Survivor is over, that I would do a Genesis Survivor again. I'm fairly certain I ran the last one, but that was about 5 years ago, so I wouldn't mind bringing it back, especially being the 10th anniversary of the last remasters that came out. I've been on a HUGE Genesis kick lately and would enjoy doing a survivor of their music again. I'll post in the General Music Discussion thread for Genesis to gauge interest as well.
EDIT - It was five years ago, back in 2012, and it ran from March to October, but with the double-round format that I've been doing with Rush and Dream Theater, it'll take half that time.

Nice! I'd be participating.

Dream Theater The League returns - https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=53461.0

Would anyone be down for an ELP survivor? :corn
-
Is that a "no" or is this thread just really inactive?
-
Well, for me it would be a no since I'm not familiar at all with them.
-

Fair enough

hey anyone up for an oceansize survivor/league
10 year anniversary of their last album
-
I only know one Oceansize album so there's that :)

I only know two Oceansize albums so there's that :)

I can't believe it's already been 10 years since their last album...
-
How would people feel about an Anathema survivor?
-
I'd play in Alternative 4, Judgement, maybe A Fine Day to Exit if I decide to revisit it, A Natural Disaster, WHBWH, Weather Systems and Distant Satellites album survivors, don't care much about the rest of their work.
-
I'd play :metal
-
I remembered now the existence of this subsection. For Oceansize I can participate for all the 4 albums. For Anathema only from Alternative 4 to The Optimist, I don't know earlier albums
-
Using the thread at the top.... anyone down for some old school metal survivors? :metal
I'd love to have ago at any of these, as long as there are enough partecipants:
Blind Guardian
Iced Earth
Demons & Wizards, with just three albums you can keep it short
Helloween
Avantasia
Bruce Dickinson solo
James LaBrie solo
-
I would love to participate in the JLB one. Everywhere else, I'm missing half the discography :rollin

Avantasia, I'm in. JLB I would follow along, and it would give me reason to spin those (which I haven't in a while). The others... not my cuppa

I'm thinking after my Dream Theater Survivor is done, sometime around June (I think), I want to do Genesis again. Last time I did a Genesis survivor was a decade ago so I think it would be about time. After that, I think I'll do another Spock's Beard Survivor as I've done them every 3 years (2013, 2016, and 2019, so it would be about time), despite the band having been largely inactive since 2018 as far as studio albums go. I may also do a Pattern-Seeking Animals Survivor this year as well since they'll have a third album out in less than three weeks from now (April 1st). Maybe I'll start PSA up during the DT Finals just to have another thing going since those Finals will take about a month to get through. After that, probably Genesis, then SB to close out my year of 2022 Survivors.

Any plans for an upcoming survivor soon?
I was planning to put together a Pink Floyd Survivor, as there hasn't been one here in quite awhile. It was either going to be Pink Floyd or Kansas, but with Kansas's 40th Anniversary of their debut coming on March 8th, I might just do Kansas instead. In the meantime, I might do a shorter Survivor or two that won't take too long, maybe just a few weeks up to March.

I'd love Kansas. PF not so much.
