Not included in the poll, but I really love the audio commentaries for WDADRU and LSFNY as well. The former would probably be my #1 and the latter would be my #2, pushing the drummer auditions to #3 if those had been included.
I'd rank LSFNY over WDADRu, but both are really, really good. Solving the mystery....of JP's chicken francese...was a definite moment in DT history!
I actually think the Scenes From New York documentary and commentaries were quite weak. I mean, if you compare it to all the other commentaries that they did, I thought it was the least interesting. I mean, it was the first commentary they ever did, IIRC, so it makes sense that they found their stride and probably had time to contemplate more interesting stuff to talk about in the later commentaries that they did. But yeah, I enjoy listening to the commentaries on WDADRU, LIT, and 5YIALT a lot more than SFNY.
But with regards to this whole topic, I wouldn't consider commentaries to be "documentaries", so I wouldn't count them towards this whole thread.
When I first read this post last Friday, my first reaction was, "What are you talking about? There are no commentaries on LIT and 5YIALT!" Fortunately, my second reaction was, "Hmmm...are you sure about that?"
I bought LIT on VHS when it was released and then subsequently bought the 2-DVD package of LIT/5YIALT. I've watched both discs a few time (probably the former more than the latter) and never once noticed the little blurb across the top of the DVD case that mentions the commentary tracks. Nor had I ever clicked on the audio setup.
I put LIT on Saturday morning and clicked on "audio setup" and was practically giddy with excitement when I saw the audio commentary! I watched LIT on Saturday and 5YIALT on Sunday. The LIT commentary was pretty good; the 5YIALT commentary less so. It seemed to start dragging about 2/3 of the way through. It was a little awkward at times having JR comment on some of the KM and DS stuff. At one point, they were almost bashing KM and DS, and it was interesting to hear MP's comment to the effect that, whereas JR "uses technology," KM and DS "let the technology use them." All in all, pretty good stuff.
As far as commentaries, I'd still rank LSFNY at the top, followed by WDADRu, LIT and 5YIALT. Is there a commentary track on Budokan?
