If only Kral would get off his ass and record the Firesoul album he used to blabber about.  Supposedly he was reuniting with Mikkel in a new Mercenary-esque band, but nothing has happened in the last 10-12 years.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I just don't think it's happening at this point, and even if it does, I doubt Mikkel has as much high range anymore.  11 Dreams was just about the best dual vocal attack in metal though.

they're a folk/psych/pop-y band from Australia, they are on the label that KGLW came up on (Flightless) so that is likely how/why the resident gizzheads know them lol

New Bear Ghost is fantastic. Basically more of the same but considering they've not put out that much music so far and the last album was amazing that's perfectly fine with me!

New Subsignal is great too.

New Subsignal is great too.

Yep, enjoyed it too. It definitely sounds like a Subsignal album, so no big surprises (except maybe the country-ish sounding solo at the end of The Art of Giving In...?). But that's no bad thing. I like how it sounds too, more so than the last couple of records.

New Mercenary out today!  They haven't put out an album in 10 years.

Fuck yeah... I knew this has been coming - didn't they put out a Kickstarter or some crowd-funding back in 2020?  I just didn't know the release date!

Tim... no listening, you got some of this coming in a few weeks.

Interesting, I'd think they'd have way too many harsh vocals for you, and tuned way too low and modern for Tim.   :lol   I don't like the last couple nearly as much as the 00s albums, but I'll definitely be checking it out anyway.
Yeah, the new album is almost entirely Melodic Death Metal.

Wow, RYM seems to think they've dropped the metalcore elements and released the best album since The Hours That Remain.  I'll have to squeeze that in somewhere, I'm way behind on new releases now.

I wasn’t able to get to this yesterday, so spinning right now. Totally fine with it being more of the same as yes, Blasterpiece was great. I’m always Necromancin’ Dancin’!

So Mercenary's Soundtrack For the End Times is definitely a good album, though on first listen I'm not hearing why people apparently think it's much better than the previous two, and even better than Architect of Lies.  Rene still does an admirable job in vocal variety covering multiple roles since Kral and Mikkel left, but he's no Christian Alvestam.

Quite a lot. Of course, to listen to any of them I'll need to stop listening to Bear Ghost on repeat, which will be a challenge.

listening to Bear Ghost now...this is a step up from what I remember of their 1st album, esp the mixing of the cymbals.

It does sound like if 22 were doing a jazzy and theatrical style of music (kind of like Thank You Scientist I suppose).

surprised there isn't more buzz about this band though, they're pretty popular among The Dear Hunter fans especially.

edit: I take part of this back. The cymbals still clip really badly on some of the tracks.

Unfortunately, I also just learned about some drama involving the band and a member leaving back in 2019 that kind of leaves a bit of a sour taste in my mouth despite the music on this album being pretty cool.

They do at times sound an awful lot like 22 though, which isn't a bad thing necessarily, however this band drama may negate that anyway to me potentially (separating art from artist, etc of course).

Dark the Suns-Raven And The Nightsky
https://open.spotify.com/album/4olxoVLfLEOVTUFRx62O51?si=m76y63KqS9K1boRmNTm1xg

This is a band I've really come to love over the last year or two.  My first impression of this is that the harsh vocals have a bit of a more guttural quality to them, and I don't care for that. But I'll give it another go. The music, as always, is lush as hell.

Damn I’m into my first listen and this sounds simply amazing. I love the mix of harsh music and piano (it reminds me of fires in the distance in that way). I’m surprised you don’t find this “too slow”. Anyway, I hope this grows to be as good as my first impression of the album.
