Thought it would be interesting to see what people do as hobbies, or whatever side projects (i.e. non-work) people have.
I've been recently getting into Raspberry Pis and DIY electronics. My current project, which is almost guaranteed to end in failure, is an attempt to create hardware and software that balances a stick upright. I have been 3d-printing some stuff (we have a printer at work I can use), and just the process itself is so much fun. It also scratches my EE itch, which I usually never get to scratch because I just write software all day long.

You'd love the store I was at yesterday, they are an electronics store (Micro Center) and sell raspberry pi's amongst other things. I was there to buy PC parts. That would be a hobby of mine, my PC. Using it for gaming and video editting which has become a recent hobby of mine. Using that to create youtube videos.
Traveling and concerts (sometimes they go together) would be another hobby

Chino, that's the first I'm seeing of the woodworking; bro, that's world class. I'm impressed, and not in a "oh, honey, look how cute that is. He's trying to work wood!" kind of way. More in a "holy crap, why isn't he doing that for a living instead of bitching about sitting in a fucking office?" kind of way. Or in a "Hey, I could really use a nice box to store my stuff in in my bedroom; do you think I'd have to blow him to get him to make me one?" kind of way. ;) :)

So yeah, traveling to see shows. Sometimes shows at really cool venues. Roger Waters at the Hollywood Bowl comes to mind. Sometimes to see one-off gigs. Maiden's only NA headlining gig for the Early Days tour was a winner.

I have too many hobbies:
- I try and practice guitar every day
- I'm a gamer so usually I'll play something on the PC, and as a side I love building PC's
- Spinning off the gaming I've been working on coding my own game (it's crap but a lot of fun)
- I go on rides on my motorcycle on the weekends. I typically ride my bike to work too if it isn't going to rain but that's more for transport than leisure.
- Building furniture. My gf wanted a farmhouse table and it's really expensive to buy one so I built it, it came out well so I built a bench and a massive shelf for the living room. I didn't draw up the plans from scratch, I just found some online.

Books. I collect books. Eventually I'll have to narrow it down to specific types of books. I prefer hardcovers though a lot of the fantasy novels were never released in hardcover so I'll get the paperbacks for them.

Victoria and I have been playing a lot of boardgames lately. We tried dungeons and dragons three times with some hardcore people, and we just couldn't get into it. The guy whose house we played at has such a large boardgame collection, he has it insured for $10K. We're more casual. We recently bought Risk, which almost started an actual war in our house. We play Pandemic a lot as well. Firefly gets the most play though, especially with all the expansions. Opinions of the show aside, the boardgame is damn near perfect. I made some new game pieces for it on my 3D printer.

I tried so hard to plan my vacation next month around at least one concert in the north west and even got the gf to agree that we could squeeze one in, sadly nothing is really happening that week out there. Im really considering the idea of going to Vegas to catch Incubus at their one week stay at the Hard Rock, but I'm thinking that's unlikely so I'm kind of bummed about my concert traveling this year besides my trip to Boston and sneaking in the Chili Peppers during a work trip to LA.

I have various hobbies, but my current projects;
The main one is the audio system in my car. I added a small sub-woofer, which was a huge chore and pain with an equally detailed story. Today I will be attempting to move the sub-woofer to underneath the passenger seat. It is an all-in-one unit, so it has the amp built in. It is also small, as I didn't want the thing to draw heavily on my batteries (I have a hybrid). I also will be replacing the after market radio mounting bracket today, as the after market company now makes one that fits my year and model. The last part of the infotainment system is a rear camera. I already gave it an attempt, with no luck.
My other easier project is building a wall mounted shelving units for my media. My initial ideas were a bit more grand, but it's pretty straightforward in that I'm taking pieces of wood and screwing them in at random lengths and stuff.

That one was doing great until I bought my house. Unfortunately, there is no place in my house that gets enough sunlight for a long enough period of time (this was pre-indoor farm), and the plants began to die. I put it outside as a last ditch effort and an unexpected cold night froze the soil and shattered the carboy it was in :(

Nice. Pro-tip: Not sure if there are farms where you live, but I've stopped at a lot of barn/yard sales and I'm always amazed by how many people have carboys for sale. You can buy a decent new one for $35-$50, but I picked up three from this one guy for $10.

There's a local Feed Store that I buy my bird feeder seed from and he has one as decoration up above his counter behind the register. I've asked him a dozen times if he'd sell it to me. He can't recall where it exactly came from but says that it's been around his family store since he was a boy....this guy looks to be late 60's early 70's so I'm sure it's an old antique. I'll ask if I can snap a pic of it the next time I'm in there.

Those are cool pieces. I haven't been able to get the game to the table yet. One of the problems with running the local gaming group is I'm the one who gets stuck teaching games most of the time, and most people aren't even interested in trying something that is going to take at least 90 minutes. I was shocked the one time I got Power Grid on the table and got people into it. I'd like to try Firefly some day. I wouldn't call it a perfect game (that title is reserved for Twilight Struggle), but I've heard that Firefly is probably the best pickup and deliver game out there.
If you haven't figured it out by now, I was your SS. If most of my shit wasn't in storage, I probably could have gotten you a more complete Cones of Dunshire.

I'm too much of a dilettante to get serious about any hobbies. At this point in my life I've noticed a pattern where I am obsessed with something for a brief period of time, varying from weeks to months, learning all I can about it, then once I reach some level of understanding I am no longer interested. This has actually prevented me from even starting some hobbies, including RC helicopters (so far), home machine tools (lathe, milling machine, etc.), home theater, etc. Any hobby I have devoted serious time to, I have always languished in the novice stage. Of course the advanced stages are what draw you in; getting an instrument rating instead of just flying VFR, actually practicing several hours every day to become reasonably proficient with guitar, or enduring enough trial and error cycles to build a working wooden clock.
Radio control- This was my first "real" hobby. From about age 13 to 18 I enjoyed fixing and racing them, but never went off the deep end with it.
Guitar- This was in my late teen years, and I got a bass guitar to start a band with some friends. We mashed our way through some Metallica songs, but not much beyond that. Another friend of mine, who is a professional musician, kept me motivated and I even had him give me lessons, but I guess just didn't want it badly enough to practice. I kept dabbling into my mid 20's, and havent really touched it in 7 or 8 years now.
Clock building- I spent about 5 months designing one with Solidworks, and a few months thereafter cutting the gears and assembling my design. I eventually got something that ticked which was exciting, but I haven't revisited it. Maybe I will resume this when I have the space for a workshop again.
Flying- I've always been interested in aviation, having an uncle who was in the air force talking about his flying all over the world. I eventually decided on flying lessons and actually stuck with it to get my private pilot certificate. Ive accumulated about 170 hours so far, but never did any of the long overnight or multi day trips I thought I would. My longest flight is still the multi leg trip that was part of my student training. I joined a club and thought being around other more accomplished pilots would bring me up, but that didn't happen. It's now been about 18 months since I last flew. Partially because my wife and I had a kid in that time, but my flying was very infrequent long before that. Again, this is something I still have in my pocket to revisit later in life.

So, When we got to adding the poly coat...when we applied it it actually lightened the stain a bit....which worked out I think because it brought out the wood grain even more..

This was 'why' I did it. We had originally planned to build this 4 years ago. But my grandmother go sick with cancer and so he took care of her as she withered and passed away. Then, months later....his mom got breast cancer. She was 99 and decided not to get treatment. He took her in and cared for her in her final months. She passed away a week shy of 100. THEN....his brother who had half his lower jaw/face removed 26 years ago due to chewing tobacco took a turn for the worse as his body was just 'done' after years of only a liquid diet. His brothers wife was going to put him in a home but my Grandpa would not allow his brother to spend his last days in a home....so, he took him in as well and cared for him for his final months.
Although we had planned to build this...there was no way I was going to press the issue. So, last november-ish we spoke and decided come spring we'd get to it. I think it was good for him to have some company once a week for those few months on the heels of what he'd been through the last few years. And, especially that during all of that he had prostate cancer....an operation....and radiation treatment!! He fully recovers....then we started on this.
It was great to get this chance to spend the time with him.

I can't tell by the pictures, but did you biscuit join those planks too or is it just a glue lam?
I thought the chamfer was an nice touch as well as the dowel pinned skirts. How is the top held to the base?

Yes. Planks biscuit joint and glue. We originally were going to use tenons but it was too difficult to make such large openings line up.
Top is connected to the apron with a Z bracket. When I get home tonight I’ll take a pic.

Here are the 'Z' brackets. My grandpa says these allow for the expansion and contraction of the wood through the year....they'll just give the wood some 'slack' to move. I don't know....he knows all this stuff. :lol We cut some small slits on the inside of the apron to nest the bottom of the bracket then drilled small pilot holes and screwed them in to the top. There are (10) total holding the top to the base

Im learning to grow weed
I have a “guy” I go to for advice.
Started with five CBD only seeds bought from a store (or so I thought)
Three died (I overwatered the seedlings). Two of them took and grew to about 3 feet.
I learned about the different stages. Light times. Etc etc. didn’t feed this first batch with nutrients.
Until the flowering stage. And then....suddenly...there was bud!!
All in all from seed to smoke. October to March. I ended up with one ounce. Most of it went to making an oil by my guy and he said he decided to give it a smoke to see how it tasted and he said it had a little “pop” and was definitely not cbd only. I don’t smoke it personally—I just like plants. And it’s legal to grow it now. My 72 year old mother was annoyed I wasn’t growing “the good stuff”.
I will say that only 4 plants per household is very restrictive. It is quite labor intensive to grow from seed or even clones. And by labor intensive I mean having enough growing at different stages so that you always have some on hand for personal use.....it would be a lot of work. So much easier to go online and buy the finished product especially with all the innovative ways thc is being delivered to the body. Food, beverages, vape, smoke, tabs on tongue, oils and creams.
I have a tent. And a ventilation system to keep my house from smelling like a skunk farm. Batch two

Great work, Gary. Nicely done. My maternal grandfather was among many thing's a master woodworker/ carpenter. I wish I had the patience.
As for my hobbies, I have a bunch.
I started experimenting with and making my own bitters a few years ago. I make several gallons of about 6 or 7 different types now each year. I distribute them to family and friends.I've become quite the expert on their production.
My wife and I travel fairly frequently when I'm not writing. My goal now is to attend at least 3 international concerts each year.
I also tie my own fly fishing flies. I've been tying trout flies for several years now. Last year, inspired by the magnificent salt water flies, by the late Megan Boyd, I've been trying to create art pieces, like hers were.
I also collect scotch whisky. I have over 240 bottles now. Most are investment purchases. I've traveled to Scotland many times, and met with literally dozens of master distillers. I received my Certificate of Expertise from the Scotch Whisky Training School in Edinburgh last year.
My son and i are visiting all 30 MLB parks.We started several years ago and are up to 25 now this year.We've also hit 18 NFL stadiums, and 6 NHL arenas. It would be great to see them all someday.
I also collect fossils, but the room I display them in is filling up fast. In the same room, I also collect old farmers almanacs. I have over 400 of them.The earliest dating back to 1803.
To replace the need for competition that I had lost after finishing my college football days, I used to fence competitively through my early 30's. Last month, I bought a practice foil and some new shoes from Triplette. I've been playing around with some footwork drills a few times. My arthritic knees don't let me move like I used too.
I've also been in a pretty competitive fantasy baseball league for the last 18 years, and three fantasy football leagues each fall.

I really like this system! Left to my own devices, I probably would have installed a diagonal cleat at the corners and run a screw through them into the bottom of the table-top. This looks like a far superior option since, as your Pawpaw points out, it allows for expansion and contraction. Well done! :tup :tup

I'm not sure I ever posted my "Table Town" on this forum, but one day I hope to build a huge version (that includes building the table) for the center of a future living room. I'd like it to have a functioning a model train inside it as well.

Brian, that town is awesome!! I've thought about doing something like that. I've often thought of creating a couple of the major civil war battlefields like Gettysburg or Vicksburg or something. I think that'd be a fun thing to do. Or, even thought of creating Solomon's temple. I know these things have been done by greater artists or model makers....but I think it's something I could get in to.

Brian, that town is awesome!! I've thought about doing something like that. I've often thought of creating a couple of the major civil war battlefields like Gettysburg or Vicksburg or something. I think that'd be a fun thing to do. Or, even thought of creating Solomon's temple. I know these things have been done by greater artists or model makers....but I think it's something I could get in to.

Yeah, that's something I'd like to try my hand at one day too. When I used to model railroad, the trains were my least favorite part (and they were absurdly expensive). Creating the scenery was always what I enjoyed doing the most.

My mom is a real estate agent and as a kid she would take me with her into like new housing developments and you'd see in the office someone would build something exactly like what Chino made of their vision of the development. I was always so fascinated looking at them as a kid. That's really cool, but holy heck that is so detailed and small that I feel like it must be frustrating to build.

I actually find the smaller the easier. When you're doing large scale stuff, it's really easy to pick out imperfections. If I tried to paint a figurine that was an inch tall, it'd look like shit because I'm not that steady of a hand, but when I'm painting a person that's only 1/3 of an inch tall, the little details needed for realism are too small to even exist. It's harder to screw up something tiny, if that makes sense.

Oh yeah, for sure. Gluing on a tiny scale is a whole different ball game. I've had to use one of these before to hold tiny pieces together while applying glue with the head of a pin.

Thanks fellas. The grill came out like trash, so I'm going to have to soak that in paint thinner and give it another go. I'm still completely clueless as to how I'm going to go about painting the trees. I printed a couple extras for practice.

I finally finished my dream truck build and got to take it out last weekend. The thing performed flawlessly and was far more capable than I expected it to be. The plan was to take it easy and treat her respectfully as a shelf queen, but my confidence in its abilities skyrocketed about 5 minutes in, and I wasted no time exposing it to some punishment.
I did manage to snap a side mirror (repaired with hot glue in the pits), but luckily I can print those out in about 20 minutes per.

Thought it would be interesting to see what people do as hobbies, or whatever side projects (i.e. non-work) people have.
I play a lot of Pokemon GO, so that's my main hobby, but this summer I decided to take my decades-old love of rollerskating (quad, not blade) and bring it outdoors and into skate parks. Turns out that outdoor skating is a lot harder than rink skating and you have to really consider your bearings (I use Bones Reds) and wheels (98A hardness is great for outdoors but way too soft/sticky for rinks), so I ditched my ancient cheaper quality skates and grabbed some lovely new leather Riedells. Started out a little rough since skating on asphalt and over grit and rocks and sticks is really hard on quads, but at this point I can skate almost anywhere that has some sort of pavement. I wear safety gear of course - I'm too old (46) to take a fall without gear, due to the fact that I'm impatient to heal lol. Definitely have been enjoying going to skate parks locally as well as out of town and practicing on ramps and whatnots. I can't do a lot yet as far as that stuff goes but I'm having a blast. Pretty cool, I used to love skating when I used to play roller hockey. For some reason I was way better in blades than on my own feet but I'm sure I'd be terrible if I tried to throw skates on now, my ankles and knees just aren't what they used to be.

Skating (ice or roller) is one thing I've never been good at. Maybe I didn't practice enough but I was never able to do more than go forward. Whenever it was time to turn or stop, there are a 50-50 chance that I would do what I was trying to do or end up on the floor.

I just recently finished the smallest radio control truck I've put together to date. It's fully functional and cute as hell. It took about 11 hours to assemble before paint (not counting all the times I had to stop building to search for a part that I dropped :lol). It's a 1/35 scale and was a heck of a challenge. I was putting together the internals of the differentials and transfer case with a pair of tweezers in each hand. It was a lot of fun though, and if you already have spare receivers and a radio gear (I have a remote that can store and be bound to 20 vehicles), you can get a kit for about $85.

My dad has been getting bored in retirement, and since he's decided that 20+ guitars is enough, he's started putting his money elsewhere. In the last year, he's started collecting watches and has bought 12 or 13 pretty nice ones since. He's got them in a display case in his office. I have dozens of rolls of PLA filament with little material left on them, so they aren't ideal for use if I'm doing a big print that requires a lot of material. I decided to start a project with a ton of little pieces (131 to be exact) that get assembled into something larger. I decided to make him a large watch that will act as a clock for his office. I think it'll look cool next to his display case.
I started working on the band/links last night. This is going to be a doozy. I hope it all comes together in the end.

Been making good headway on the face. It's been tricky. I haven't tried it yet, but I've read that wiping the sanded areas with baby oil will bring the color back out.

Are you painting everything, Chino? I noticed that with the band you managed to make it look like brushed stainless, was that a paint technique? If so, it's quite realistic.
What look are you going for with the faces... also, I'm not tracking what the four different faces are for.

The stuff that looks metal is actually all plastic. It's just the type of filament I use that gives it that effect. It's one of my favorite kinds of filament to print with just for that reason.
I'm not really painting the face. The minute markers and the text on the face are recessed a bit. So using a white-out pen, I'm filling those pools with white out and sanding the face smooth once it's dried so everything is flush. It replicates an ivory inlay pretty well.
Those faces will all end up in the trash (though a few of them will make good coasters). The face needs to be the best looking piece of the project, and it's taking a good amount of trial and error and settings tweaking to really get it as good as I want. The faces pictured above are just showing how it's progressively getting better. A lot of people think 3D printing is just hitting a "go" button and waiting for something to finish, but certain things require quite a bit of knowledge and time to really get right. It can be a real pain in the dick sometimes. I printed a fifth face overnight that looked really good upon my initial inspection this morning. Hoping to finish it off tonight and be done with that piece.

Pretty much finished the watch. I got the clock mechanism installed last night and all the glowing inlays in place. What a pain in the ass that was. My printer is decent, but when you start trying to print objects that are only 1.5mm X 2mm, things can get funky. I'm pretty happy with the end result, despite some glaring flaws that might not be noticeable in the photos. I prettied up the face a bit too with a black sharpie. All I need now is my 4" acrylic disc to come in. The glass beaker cover I ordered did not satisfy my needs like I hoped it would. The hands are a little smaller than what I wanted. I had to scale them down to 87.5% their original size in order to get everything to properly sit on the movement mechanism. They were small to begin with, so the near 13% reduction isn't really evident, but the hour hand is still kind of bugging me.
I also got my camera feed (pet cam) and remote shutdown (smart plug) set up. Now I can monitor my long prints from anywhere when I'm not home. If something fucks up, I can shut it down remotely instead of finding out when I get home that I've been wasting filament and banging away on the machine for no reason for a couple of hours.

Not really building anything this time around, but I've been in a funk this week, and sometimes when that happens I impulse buy a new RC something or other.
I really did it this time...
I bought the largest scale (1/7) and the most powerful vehicle I've ever owned or driven. It's that big sucker in the bottom right. It's just shy of 30" long and will top out at 60mph. That's blistering fast for a vehicle of that size. Getting that red GT in the top left to crack 60 has been a challenge, so this thing hitting that mark is hard to wrap my head around. You've got to be careful at that scale and at those speeds. It's really easy to break a leg/ankle with a runaway truck.
Naturally with this hobby, I couldn't just walk in and out with only a shiny new truck. No, I needed new batteries to feed an electronics system of that caliber, and I needed a new dual charger to handle charging those batteries. This is one of the few perks of living alone.

During the lockdown I have experimented with several different "crafting" scenarios to keep myself occupied. Birdhouses- for a decorating competition between the 3 of us ( me, wife, daughter). Casting birdbaths- making the forms is the challenge and then pouring them with countertop cement, but I think I've found my niche. Making snare drums! I must admit that the financial out lay has gotten a little out of hand ( new table saw, various supply runs to home depot) but I'm willing to overlook that! The challenge, and majority of time spent, is building the jigs and refining the process'. All of that can be used over and over again. I started by building a 12x7" and a 14x6" from poplar ( in-expensive but still good drum making wood) to refine my techniques before moving on to some more exotic wood. I had a few mishaps with the 14" shell but the 12" is at the staining/ finishing stage and looking good. The hardware for both was delivered but I must say that cost of that is not cheap either! After these 2 I have some walnut and canary wood to experiment with. My wife asks " why do u need more drums? " the answer is, I don't, but I'm having fun building them. If I can figure out posting pictures I will do so.

Did you document any of this at all? I've built plenty of bird houses, but I've never casted anything thing outside of using sand and molten lead. I'd be interested in seeing your birdbath making process. That'd be a cool project for my mom.

I have been filming the whole snare drum build experiments with the hopes of editing into a watchable video.
The first bird bath, I used countertop cement which has minimal (if any) argregate, so it flows pretty good and dries fairly smooth. I got a few bags at Lowe's. For the form I used a rubber traffic cone for the tapered base with a piece of of of PVC pipe sticking out the top to extend the height. I sealed off the top of pipe, flipped the form upside down, braced it for strength and filled it.
For the basin I used 2 different plastic Rubbermaid trash can lids that with some trimming, one fit into the other, leaving a nice rounded void. I drilled a hole in the bottom and inserted a small piece of the same PVC pipe. When the form was filled around the pipe it left a void for the cylinder at the top of the base to sit in. Making the bath in two pieces made it easier to move around and not so heavy. When the concrete dried I cut the rubber cone in half and took the 2 kids apart to reveal the finished pieces. The basin fits on the base without falling off.
For the second bath I wanted a contrast to the rounded first one. I haven't finished the basin yet but the pedestal I formed in a tapered shape, like an obelisk. I inserted the same PVC pipe at the top and have a second piece inside the form to create a hollow so the bird bath isn't too heavy a chunk of concrete. I haven't finished the basin yet -snare drum building got in the way and took over!
My birdhouses are not even close to being as nice as yours! They belong in the low rent part of bird town!

I've started working on a Delorean body for an on-road car I'm building. There wasn't one available online, so I started by using a solid, static model and have been hollowing it out.
It's coming out pretty good. I've never done something quite like this before, so there's a bit of a learning curve.

About half a year (maybe a month or two more) but I mostly just did a thread or two (~1-1.5 hours) every other day before lockdown. Now I'm doing from 2 to 4 hours each day and it's going much faster.
It also helps that a lot of the background (which I haven't started on yet) is designed in half-stitches as opposed to the actual leopard which is almost all in standard cross-stitches, so when I get to the background (which I plan to start on soon for a change), it should be going twice as fast. But it's also the most difficult and ambitious design I've attempted yet.
Jokes aside, I'm hoping to finish it at the end of 2022.

With mask production at an end, I've been putting one of my printers to good use. I've always wanted to make an engine. It's kind of wild to think that we're not that far away from being able to print a functioning, metal, 3D printed engine at home.
I've still got about a bajillion other parts to print. It's got a functioning 5spd tranny w/ reverse, the high/low gears shifter, and the 2WD/4WD transfer case with shifter. One of my printers is still down for the count. The parts I need are on back order. This would go a lot faster if I could use both of them. This is also the first time I've started messing with "silk" filament. It's that shiny stuff that makes up the intake, headers, and the crank bits. It's pretty cool stuff.

Oh Happy Day!
I found a small operation out of the Ukraine that makes RC car bodies. They do high quality, limited runs of shells that you don't really see anywhere else (likely because of licensing fees and legalities). My newest body just arrived, and I'm all kinds of giddy inside.
In the image below, I'm lining it up on one of my existing cars to check for fit. I guess I'm now going to have to build another kit so it has something to sit on. Shucks!

So I might make two and have one be the display body and the other be the body that gets run when I bash. With shipping international and paint, each body runs about $110, so that's kinda lame.
I also have this kit that I recently put together. One of the colors I need was on backorder (still is :tdwn), so this how she sits. For this one I'm going to be doing a black, purple, and silver paint scheme with healthy amount of flake in the purple and silver. I'm hoping it comes out alright. This body is actually five pieces that have to be painted separately and inside out. They go together at the end. It's messing with my head a bit trying to plan out all the masking and what colors go down when.
For those that might not know, you paint RC car bodies from the inside rather than the outside. That way when you crash, only the clear lexan takes damage, not the paint. The paint also has some special stuff in it that makes it flexible. So when the body bends, the paint bends and stretches with it rather than cracking and flaking off. It's pretty cool.

I had a job in my early 20's for a couple summers where I cleaned and stained decks. There were times when we had the 60' ladders out and walk plank set up between them when we were doing these large condo/apartment buildings......a lot of the homes we did work for were high dollar homes with extensive decks as well. Many a precarious spot spent on the ladder. I was usually the guy on the ladder on the 'outside' of the deck doing the spindles and all the stuff you couldn't reach from 'inside' on the deck because I worked with my brother who.....fell from a ladder as a painter. Luckily he landed in a pretty thick shrub and only ended up with a fear of ladders.....but that placed me always on the outside.
And, this was just a really small company ran by a buddy of mine so there wasn't an extensive 'safety' aspect to this. It was "don't fall" :lol This job took place smack dab in the middle of my 'stoner' days so I was high the entire day anyway so what did I care? Smoking weed and then working at high heights with little training? What could go wrong? :lol Thankfully, nothing bad happened. Did have a spindle detach from a deck into my hand one time as I gripped it for leverage......and I was about 60' in the air when that happened so it scared the :censored out of me. I remember my brother and I locked eyes as it happened.....right before I could grab myself on the ladder in that split second to where he and I both thought I was about to plummet and splat on the asphalt below.

They each serve their purposes. The first one up above is a much larger machine. I would never have been able to complete a few projects without a print volume of that size. It's a beefy machine that's kind of loud, and it wears and tears itself out fast. It takes a lot of maintenance to keep running smoothly. But it's good when I need it to be. The second one from up above is a much smaller machine, but it runs quieter and its print quality is absolutely ridiculous at its price point. I can't recommend it enough.

It's quite something. I'm used to technology getting cheaper over time, but I've never seen such a rapid price drop like we have with 3D printers (LED televisions maybe).

Yes, sometimes my wrist goes a little numb if I spend hours stitching, but I also think I have carpal tunnel.
I've been working on this piece since June 14th, when I was fully working from home. I was able to finish one character and start on another each day. I went back to work two weeks ago, so less time for crafts. :'(

Talented is a strong word as I'm only following the pattern the designer laid out for me but hey, I'll take it :) With the lockdown over I also have way less time to do this, but I still try to squeeze in a thread or two each day. Obligatory progress pic:

I won't speak for anyone else, but how it works for me is:
- Set up the table and the hoop (or w/e this square thing is called. I know that the hoop is a circular thing)
- Consult the design and pick out the strands to begin stitching, get the thread assembled. The trick for me is to switch colors often to keep it exciting
(the two steps above take like 5-10 minutes but that's because the design I'm doing is pretty difficult. for easier designs it would be like 2-3 minutes tops)
- Put on the music I was looking for to check out, be that something from DTF or anything else really. Sometimes I just play something I would like to listen to. It's a great way to listen to music while still doing something
- Everything is set up and now the good times begin
It definitely requires a lot of patience (especially if you've got a knot in your thread somehow, screw that), and it definitely helps with anxiety. The thing is, I'm constantly driven by desire to create something; but as I'm creating helicopter designs for my paycheck and as most of you know I'm also constantly creating a homebrew fantasy D&D campaign from scratch for my friends to play in; stitching is a fantastic way to still create while following someone else's instructions for a change. It's a great way to be productive while your brain is in sleeping mode.

Thank's Brotha. No Crocs... :lol Although... in Cozumel near one of the southern lil rock jetties they've occasionally been spotted there. It's close to an estuary. If it was less than 6' I would probably get in the water and try to photograph it. Lots of folks do.

That's one thing that really makes me depressed thinking about the corona life we are in. It's going to end up being one year (or more) we all lost of doing the things we love as we just get older and won't forever be able to do these things. I get so upset everytime I think about what I could have been doing this summer and the lost experiences.

That's sweet!!!!! My biggest fear would be experienced folks using them. Possible damage to the fragile reefs and structures. It is wicked cool though!!!!

My paint finally came in and I'm able to get started on this body.

The pics below were taken in a pretty poorly lit paint booth/room I have in my house. The paint is pretty metallic and should really pop when I get it in the sun. Also, there is a dull film on the outside of the body that's to be removed once you're done painting it from the inside. With that on, the finish looks rather matte. Once removed, it looks nice and glossy.
The light blue stuff that's a bit transparent is a liquid mask that can be laid down with a paint brush and then trimmed with an hobby knife. Here I'm masking off the areas I don't want to receive paint. The area that's left exposed will be silver. From there, I'll cut away more and more of the mask as I add additional colors. When painting RC bodies, you always want to go light to dark dark to light, light to dark, dark to light.

Cut away some more mask and onto the purple. All that spider webbing in the grill and on other parts of the body is just the liquid mask reacting to the previous layers of paint. That look will disappear when I peel the last bit away.

Any area that still has that blue mask on it will ultimately be a metallic black. The cab is all black, so I'll be starting that too very soon.

Got the all the painting done last night. I'm pretty happy with it. I tried a new liquid mask this time around and I think it's going to be the last time I use it. I'm not all that pleased with how it worked compared to other kinds I've used in the past. There's a lot of tiny blemishes if you look up close. It's all good though. A couple of decals and a scuff or two from clipping a curb, and you wont even notice :lol

Facebook Marketplace has been a dangerous place for me as of late. Having a bit of disposable income isn't helping matters any. I'm about to go pick up a never assembled, never painted, still in plastic, 1/350 Titanic model. Should be one hell of a project. I've wanted to build a Titanic model for a long time, and there are 4 or 5 on the market of good quality, only two of which were big enough for me. The one I found is the second largest model available. The next one up is 1/200, which is just absurdly big :lol Can't wait to start building the thing. However, I've been going back and forth about remodeling my basement so I have a proper hobby area, instead of sharing that space with my home office. Working from home has made it kind of cramped in here. If I do do that, I might hold off on the build until I can do it in more model-friendly environment.

However, I'm going over the instructions very carefully because I plan to illuminate the thing. It's not meant for it, but it seems totally doable. I'm going to have to manually drill out a couple hundred of the port holes in the hull to let light out, and then I'm going to have to figure out where I'm going to drill holes between the decks to snake all the wiring. Once you start putting the decks on top of each other, there's no going back. So I'm going to have to wire it deck by deck as I go along.
This is the 1/200 scale kit I mentioned above. It's made by a company called Trumpeter and costs $500 for the version with the lighting kit (100% unassembled and not painted btw).

Anyone ever get anything from a company called 2X4 Basics? I ordered a bunch of stuff from the yesterday. I've mentioned in other threads that I'm redoing my basement to be a room dedicated to my hobbies and projects. That's going to require a bunch of storage and work benches. I wanted to get them built fast and these things seem like an awesome solution. All you need are 2X4s and plywood sheets. They make leg and shelving mounts/brackets/templates (idk what to call them) and you just cut your wood to whatever dimensions you need. I plan on building a behemoth of an L-shaped work bench and a separate display area for all of my RCs. I ordered a bunch of shelving kits from them too. Hoping to knock most of it out on Saturday.

I got my new work area basically finished today and moved my 3D printers into the corner behind the bench. I'm pleased with how it turned out. Ended up costing around $400 for everything, about $250 more than I was planning on spending :lol I'm good with it though. It'll get used a ton. Now to work on the entertainment center on the other side of the room :coolio

Relatively inexpensive in my opinion. I think it's dirt cheap as far as being able to create intricate 3D structures in your house goes. A quick look through my Amazon history, and it looks like I've spent roughly $400 on material in the last 3 years. I've used maybe half of that across all my projects. You can't see it in the pic above because it's blocked by the bench, but on the bottom shelf of my 3D printing rack, there's about 15 unfinished spools of yet to be used material.
For example, for this project, the bed, headache rack, logs, side mirrors, battery mount up front, body mount in the middle, electronics box, and the rear bed mount (with 3D printed hinges) were all 3D printed. With draft and test pieces, that was less than $15 worth of material. In the hobby world, such customization might has well be free at that price. Years ago, you'd have to make that out of polystyrene (not as strong and labor intensive) or metal, which would have cost significantly more. Hell, the cans of spray paint I needed to paint the parts cost more than the 3D printing material :lol

Now, the material can get expensive though. I use a material called PLA, and it's the cheapest material there is. It's easy to work with, can be finished nicely without much effort, and it suits my needs perfectly. That's typically $18-$24 per roll (the truck above used maybe 2/3 worth of a roll of material) pending what kind you're getting. You can get plain colors toward the $18 range and glow in the dark/metallic/granite effects will be closer to the $24 mark. I use one type that's like 22% saw dust and it looks like wood(ish) when you're done. It will even accept stain. There are some really high end filaments that are $60+ a roll. They're laced with carbon fiber and whatnot. They're tough to print with, but they're really strong. It's comparable to steel depending on the application and how you print it. A lot of the 3lb-12lb combat robot guys use it.
As for the stuff I print, it's a combination of my own designs, designs other people have made, and hybrid of the two.
There's a website, www.thingiverse.com that's pretty much the largest database of 3D models for 3D printing. I've pulled dozens of prints off there and just printed them as are (changing the scale if needed). Sometimes I take models other people have made and I'll modify them. For example, the logs in that truck above were originally made for a D&D map. The trees were shorter and more tapered at the bottom. I took the models and I modified the original object to better match the look and of type of log I was looking for.
Then there's the stuff that's 100% all me. I use an opensource CAD software (www.tinkercad.com) to draw up my models. The part below is the center body mount for the truck above (silver piece with velcro). I designed it after work one day, and by the time I woke up the next day, the part was finished.

Whether you design your own, or download someone else's, it's never exactly just "clicking print". Each model is a little different, and in time with experience you learn how to set up your printer to best print each one. You need to determine things like infill density, resolution, where you want supports (if at all), print speed, print orientation, etc.. It might sound intimidating, but it's really straight forward. If you know how to properly set 5 or 6 key printing parameters, you can print 99% of the stuff you download off that site above.

3D printing tech is amazing as hell and I'm so excited that they've become so affordable these days. I'm really afraid to get into it as I know I'll be completely consumed by it. Maybe after I build my new PC rig next year I'll get a small 3D printer and make trinkets for the kids.

I kind of have this idea where I want to take a picture of the vehicle and super impose it against a backdrop that would look like something Bob would paint, and then I want to use a filter or something to make it look like a painting. I think it'd be cool to print that out and put it on the easel he'll be transporting around.

Tomorrow is the annual Kreepy Krawl event. It usually takes place before Halloween, but the guy who runs it had his wife pass away a few weeks ago, so he delayed it. It's my favorite get together of the year. I've spent the last four hours turning wrenches, checking drivetrains, getting my travel toolboxes/mobile pit together, and charging all my batteries. Brian. My kiddos are really into 'War Hammer' Lots of miniatures and painting. They go through brushes like crazy though. I ask them to follow a simple paint thinner cleaning process between each color and after they're done using them but they're kids...so no real advice there. It's fun though...I ordered my own little set just to be able to paint some as well.

Chino, the design is the Mayan design from artifacts. The middle sticker is not on yet because I'm trying to decide how to paint it since it isn't on gloss paper and not plastic. The surfaces were slightly raised, so very little freehand on my part. I chose the colors which are different from the actual one, but I was looking to make it pop an make it my own.
As for brush care, I use warm water for my cup and thoroughly wash and run every after use. I also use this after every other session:

As your first workhorse brush begins to become less effective, turn it into a mixing brush because mixing is where you will do the most damage and getting paint into the ferrule.
Two things that will help you out a bit: either buy washes or learn how to make a good wash. There is a good recipe I found on YouTube. I make my own now because I have the stuff for it, but I honestly don't think the effort is worth it compared to what Citadel produces. Not a big fan of their paint pots, but their wash is awesome.

I've never been bugged about what I spend on things. My wife and I have separate checking accounts (which we both have access to) and then we have four different 'savings' accounts for specific purposes. When we were first married we divided the financial responsibilities. I pay everything pertaining to the house, all the bills, upkeep etc etc. She's groceries and anything health related to the kids (co-pays and what not)
That being said, as long as the bills are being paid and I'm putting my share into the savings......I buy whatever I want whenever I want. No questions asked. Now, I'll get an eye roll or a sarcastic jab from time to time but it's in jest and not anger. I actually get mad at her for not buying herself things she might enjoy or want. It's always about the kids or something else. One year about 5 or 6 years back I saved up $1000 and had her sisters kidnap her on her birthday, gave them the cash....and they took her shopping with the instructions not to return until she had spent the $$ on herself.

I really love hobbyists.
I've decided to put my love for RC on the back burner and focus all my energy (money) into combat robotics. I've been pretty overwhelmed because of the number of options out there, and while the electronics at their core are the same, the wiring of a combat robot is much different than that of an RC car. Lots of niche electronics that I'm just not familiar with or even aware of.
I made a posting in a Beetleweight (the class I'm entering) Facebook group, asking if anyone would be willing to have a conversation on Discord and help point me in the right direction. I was flooded with DMs of people offering to help. I chatted with a few people, but one guy in particular took 4.5 hours out of his Saturday night to help me. A complete stranger. I showed him some concepts of what I was hoping to build, and he just started breaking it down. The dude went above and beyond to help me. He could have just sent me links saying "use these motors" or "go with the radio", but he took the time to break down all the nuances and teach me important stuff like how to determine what motor RPMs you'd need based on how fast you want to go alongside other variables like tire size and gearing. I just thought it was really cool. I've seen a lot of new people looking for help in other hobbies, and so many people just say "use the search function" or "did you try Googling".
I now have a complete spreadsheet of components I need to order and I have listed a few of my RC vehicles for sale to raise some funds. There's some pricy equipment I'll need up front to get going, but those are a one-time purchase. As always, once I started itemizing everything, the budget seemed to double in no time :rollin

I've finally taken the plunge and have started doing something I've wanted to do/dreamed about since I was about 10. I'm building a combat robot. I'm a long ways away from the heavy weight, 250lb class that you see on TV, but there are a number of organizations in the North East that run a 3lb class called "beetle weight".
Being my first build, I've decided to not deal with the added complexities of a spinning weapon and instead go with a flipper bot. Despite building RC trucks for the last twenty years, there are electrical components I'm not well enough versed in when it comes to robot combat, so I'll be taking it slow. I'll be building a bot inspired by my childhood favorite, BioHazard.

I'm debating calling it BeetleHazard as a nod to the original. It wont be to scale as far as dimensions go, but it will be in spirit.
I needed a lot of new equipment, parts, and tools to make this happen. I've spent the last four weeks putting together spreadsheets of costs and inventories of everything I needed, and then I went on a shopping spree. I was on PTO all last week and I took this week as well. It's given me a lot of time to really dig in. I've been having a blast. You might remember that new work area I built a few months back, well, it's working splendid for this new endeavor. I did sell off a few of my favorite trucks to fund a lot of the up-front stuff I needed :-[
I picked up the table saw new, but I found the band saw on FB marketplace for $100! That was the steal of the day.

I needed a new remote that was capable of monitoring and displaying telemetry in real time, as well as allow custom mixing of basically every button and switch on it. I've never had anything this advanced and I'm completely in the dark with such a piece of tech. A lot of airplane and heli guys use it.

A few of the components I will be using came in and I just started laying them out on grid paper. Came up with a basic layout and dimensions.

Then I started self-teaching myself a real CAD tool. I've been using an opensource piece of CAD software online called TinkerCAD, but that's got a lot of limitations and I needed something with some real horsepower and control. I'm been working with Fusion 360. There's a bit of a learning curve, but I'm picking it up kind of quickly, I think.

The final bot's chassis and armor will be made out of 1/8" and 1/4" HPDE. It's the stuff they make cutting boards out of, and it's got a crazy strength to weight ratio. It's not cheap, so I'll be waiting until I'm ready to do final assembly before I start cutting into that stuff. I've been 3D printing out prototype pieces representing what I hope to be the final-ish dimensions.

There's still a lot to work out. My main goal right now is to get a rolling chassis going in which all the electronics related to the drive are working as I need them too. I'll then start designing the arm assembly based on what room I have left. I'm having a hard time determining interior space in the CAD tool because I don't know how to account for the wiring. I can add objects to represent the space taken up by the motors, ESCs, receivers, batteries, etc.. but I have no idea how to factor in wires.
That's all I got for now. My next big investment is going to be an 18"x12"x3" CNC routing machine, but that's a ways off. Maybe next year (2022). There will be 7 competitions in 2021, pending Covid. It's very unlikely I'll have time to get something ready to fight by February, but I'm hoping to make April.

Been having a blast working on this the last two weeks. Today is my last day of PTO before I have to get back to work (barfs). I'm pleased with the progress I've been able to make in that time.
Few more progress pics:
Still working with the temporary materials and making sure all the math checks out before cutting into the expensive stock. I tried to make the bot as symmetrical as I could across the X and Y axis. This allows me to make single jigs that can be used at all four corners for alignment and drilling. My wheel hubs and tires still haven't arrived, so I 3D printed mockup wheels to the dimensions of the actual ones. If you're wondering why the tires look so shiny, it's because they're made of plastic.

One of the trickiest bits of this bot is the interior space. There's only 1.75" of height on the inside, so the wiring is already tight as it is. Then there's also the problem that the wires can't go anywhere near the center of the bot or they will otherwise interfere with the arm mechanism. I think I should be able to cram everything in there though.

I managed to already cook both speed controllers, sending a $100 down the drain, but I'll consider it a learning experience. Hopefully that's the last time I accidentally plug a lipo battery into something backwards. That was actually a quick moment of panic for me because I plugged the battery in and it go too hot to hold almost immediately. I had to grab it with a towel and hurl it out window fearing it would explode. Lipos can be very violent if they decide to go up inflames.

Thanks. That room is 15'x23' with a walk-in 6'x'10 room near that shelving to the back left (make-shift spray booth). It's got an exhaust system and a slop sink. I wish the room was a little bigger. This is a walled off, semi-finished room in my basement. It has a regular dirty/concrete basement on the other side of the equipment wall, and there's the laundry/furnace room in another semi-finished area as well. The ceiling is only 79" though :lol

I've built a couple stave snare drums in the last year and was thinking it would be cool to be able to use a bandsaw to round both the inside and outside (as opposed to using my router jigs or a lathe). Even the expensive shop saws don't have a thick enough depth of cut (7 or so inches)

I'm blown away by that table saw TBH. My dad's got a 60yo, made-in-USA behemoth that's still cutting like a champ, but this thing can do everything that thing does and can be put in a trunk. I wish I bought one years ago.

Oh yeah, this is nowhere near big enough for that kind of thing. You'd need a saw that stands on the floor for something like that.

I had one but when I was moving a lot (and then going through a divorce) I gave it to my Dad in Florida. He's kind of a packrat; hopefully it's in his garage.

I love my 8 1/4" Dewalt table saw. When I started making the staves for my first drum I couldn't get the accurate angles I needed with my 25 year old Skil table saw so I upgraded. The Dewalt is super precise (for a portable job saw), powerful and light weight and extremely portable. With the addition of a Wixey digital angle gauge I was able to dial in my bevel cuts to fractions of a degree. I used it all summer long ripping treated 2x lumber for various decking jobs and it worked like a champ. I'm seeing them on line for $399 but I think I paid $300 for it. Worth every penny!

I almost went with the Dewalt one. I like Dewalt stuff a lot. Truth be told, Home Depot was the only place near me that carried it, and I wanted to support a smaller/local store near me that I'd like to keep around. The local place carries the Skilsaw equivalent of the one you have. Amzon's got it listed for $440, but the store had it on the floor for $320. I couldn't not buy it. I didn't bother putting the safety guard on mine though. I know it's unsafe as hell, but I need to be able to get close to the blade and see what I'm doing for certain cuts.

I've become absolutely fascinated by other languages and learning them. Just something about it, its so wildly different than what we are used to in the everyday. Speaking words in another language lets you step outside yourself for a moment. Really dig it.
Working on Polish as a 2nd language now, but would love to keep going to other ones afterward.

Cross-stitching update: work was busy as hell in October - December last year, so I didn't make any progress during those three months, however I'm back at it since January and so far so good. So here's a current pic, I'll post these once in a couple of months, as I guess it'll be interesting to look back at later when it's finally finished. Still on track to finish at the end of 2022.

I love my 8 1/4" Dewalt table saw.
I almost went with the Dewalt one. I like Dewalt stuff a lot.
It's kind of embarrassing, but my power tool collection looks like a Dewalt advertisement. I have the big compound miter saw, the 8-1/4" job site table saw, palm sander, plate joiner, 18 volt reciprocating saw, 7-1/4 MAX Flexvolt Cordless Circular Saw (this is perhaps the most impressive of the lot. So much torque), and the rest are all 20V Max XR Cordless including; impact driver, hammer drill, 18 g brad nail gun, trim router, jig saw, and orbital sander. I even recently bought a new Dewalt stainless steel shop vacuum at Costco. It's like a disease with me, I see that yellow and black and my mouth starts drooling. :lol
Anyway, back to hobbies. I think I told y'all that I'm doing some remodeling at home and that I've been learning to use Sketchup. Well, I was near completion of my plans (and nearly done with the demolition as well) when I thought it would be helpful, for discussions between me and Mrs. P, if Sketchup had a lighting model. I did a quick internet search and found that a group of enthusiast have made a free Ray Tracing plugin to Sketchup, I added a 4 60 watt bulbs to the model, about 12 " down from the ceiling, and voila.

And here's one with the strip lights in the shelf pockets. I usually have to turn those off during a render, because of all the calculations needed to render that many lights could can potentially run the render into a daylong event. As it is, this render took five hours at 1920 x 1080.

Welp, I am now officially 42K lighter. Today the foundation repair guys just left after 11 days of seemingly non-stop noise. But the good news is that all of our doors can close easily once again! :P
So this is stage 2 of 5 of our major home remodeling plan. Stage 3 hopefully begins in December. But at this rate, I'm not sure we'll financially make it to stage 4.

I forgot to post this. I took me some time to finish it, mainly because the pieces are not unique so several pieces could fit in the same 2-3 slots, making it very difficult to figure out the darker areas and the edges.
Building this puzzle gave me a new appreciation for the cover. The amount of details that it has its incredible. I saw things I never noticed before.

When I'm not playing. I'm watching Drumeo or thinking about playing. That's all i watch on YouTube now - is my fave TV shows cause I dont watch TV or I watch drumming videos.
I won a year of Drumeo Membership and a Drumeo practice pad so when i'm not playing i'm doing rudiments.
I think when you get really good at drums its way more fun than being good at guitar.

No argument there, drums could be a really fun instrument. I'm able to play simple 4/4 patterns and enjoy it. Eventually, I'll get a drum set to mess around, but space is limited now and drums take up a lot of space (though I would probably do an electric set)

2. If you have a decent pc / mac - get EZDrummer- or if you can afford it / have the PC space / ram - get Superior Drummer 2
3. Plus the kit into the PC / Mac via USB and turn your kit into literally any drumkit you want.

I haven't posted in a while but now that I'm back on DTF, I thought I owe you guys an update. Long story short, I dropped most of my hobbies as the war started, but I kept playing guitar, stitching and running. Which is probably why I was even able to finish this piece this summer. I haven't shown it to many people, my parents have seen it, and so has my friend I've known since childhood and I think that's it. It did turn out pretty well though.
