I don't understand how a 23 year old male hasn't seen any 80s and 90s scfi/action movies.
My parents are not movie watchers. I never went to the theaters unless it was a party for someone else, or hell was starting to freeze over. We had no movies in the house other than the movies My sister and I were bought as kids. To top it off, when I liked a movie, it would be the only movie I'd watch for weeks if not months on end. This would leave very little time for other films. I bet I watched the Richie Rich VHS tape at least 100 times... Jungle to Jungle, Little Giants, and The Big Green.. same thing.
Once I hit the 9-10 year old range, my interests were not in movies. I spent days on end building stuff out of legos, linkin logs, k'nex, and erector sets. I saw the occasional new movie (ID4, Armageddon, Titanic, etc...) Today, I have very little desire to watch old movies. I've been spoiled by modern day CGI and film making. I just don't find old movies entertaining, and most of the time they are painful for me to watch. I know everyone says that movies are about the stories and the characters. I disagree to a large extent on that, I believe that's what books and plays are for. In my opinion, movies are there to put something in front of your eyes that you otherwise would not have seen. For example, the Transformers movies are really shitty. The first one was okay, but two and three truly sucked.... from a story, acting, and character stand point. The giant CGI robots and explosions make all that other stuff tolerable. Tora Tora Tora is a great movie, but if you took the same script word-for-word, and put Saving Private Ryan visuals on it, I'd take the one with the visuals any day of the week. I tried watching the original True Grit a few days before going to see the new one. I had to stop watching after about 40 minutes... then I ended up loving the new one. I think the only reason BTTF ranks so high with me is because that's one of the few movies I saw when I was younger that wasn't a movie for kids.
I also don't like watching movies alone. I don't know why. So it's extremely rare that I'll sit down and just watch one. If I do watch a movie with someone else, we usually choose one neither of us has seen. Seeing as almost everyone has seen the movies I have not, it can make it a little difficult.
