I know there's been some discussion in the PT topic, but I think Blackfield deserves their own topic. For the upcoming record especially, as well as their previous material.
news about the 3rd lp.

If you use Twitter you can now follow Blackfield. There should be lots of announcements regarding the forthcoming album and tour dates soon. New official website will launch later this month.
Something to keep an eye on.
-
Blackfield surely deserves an own thread.
Huge fan, when in the right mood i consider Blackfield to be even better then PT, the emotional lyrics are really moving.
I'm not one of those "Aviv sucks"-people, i like him just as much as SW in the case of Blackfield, and the whole dynamic between them is what makes the music so good.
-
Think we already had a thread, but you can never have enough Blackfield threads. I agree with Zantera, there are a lot of times when I prefer Blackfield over Porcupine Tree. It's something I have to be in the right mood for though. (But if I am, I can listen to both albums on repeat and not get bored in the slightest).
Cannot wait for Blackfield III.

Yes the album is called "Welcome to my DNA". All will become clear when you hear the title track...

-
I am excite.
-
A bit surprised that the new album is getting a title, but the cover-art looks amazing and i can't wait. :metal
-
Cover looks a lot more 'positive' than the other two.
-
To me it's like a mix of We're Here Because We're Here, and some No-Man covers. :-*
-
Sounds awesome.
-
mmmmmmm
-
Sweet! I love the title, too. This looks to be another promising release from SW! Can't wait for the release date!
-Marc.
-
Hoping for some US dates soon.
DO WANT.
-
Definitely looking forward to this. Loved the first two albums.
-
That cover looked like something Stevetheater or Hugh Syme could've cooked up. No offense to either because its a pretty good cover, but not what I'd expect a blackfield cover to look like at all. If covers are reflective of the music inside, then this should be a fairly positive album.
-
Constantly more excited for the gig in April. :D
-
So judging by the album-title, is this a concept-album about cloning?
-
I can't wait to hear this one! :'( (See? I'm already crying)
-
So judging by the album-title, is this a concept-album about cloning?
I would be surprised, Blackfield doesn't seem to be a concept album kind of band.

Which is probably why Zantera's post contained a nearly lethal dose of sarcasm.
Anyway, the album cover and title have me super psyched, color me excited.

Hmmm....I like their other cover arts better.
I mean, there's a guy...looking out a window. And he's just, like, some guy. Not even an interesting guy, just one of those people you pass in the hallway and never learn their name because they're just uninteresting.
He better be just about to jump out of that window.
-
The point of having a good cover-art is that it's supposed to be random.
Steven Wilson has learned this, Insurgentes is the proof. ;)
-
A guy and a window. Shit's random as fuck.
-

Yeah, I liked the other covers better as well. As I said, the cover looks like standard Hugh Syme stuff, but considering how much Steven loves album art, I'm sure there's a reason its like this.
-
Maybe when you hear the album, you'll think: "Holy shit the cover suits the album perfectly". :hat
-
I don't really know how to describe what I think is wrong with that album cover.
Maybe...fake looking? I'm not sure.
There's just something about it.
-
Hey sky! I found the thread! :lol I think the picture looks like the style of Pineapple Thief's last CD.
-

This is where I'm getting the Hugh Syme thing from. Mostly from his recent DT stuff. The person there looks uncannily fake, but there's nothing wrong with him physically, like the kid on BC&SL
-
I don't really care about the cover, as long as the music is as awesome as the other two albums.
-
This Killer is such a fantastic tune, might be my favorite Blackfield-song. :heart

it is a cracking tune :tup

This.
And judging the artwork before you even get to hear the music that goes along with it is kind of dumb.

I was never really a big Blackfield fan, and even just a few days ago I told ZBomber that my least favorite SW project was Blackfield (yes, IEM and BC included) but after hearing the news about a new album I decided to revisit the two albums and I think they are starting to click for me. Still not as good as IEM in my opinion but I think they've moved up above Bass Communion now.
Some songs that are changing my opinion of BF pretty rapidly:
"Lullaby"
"Pain"
"The Hole in Me"
"1,000 People"
"Epidemic"
"My Gift of Silence" - probably my favorite Blackfield song.
"End of the World"
-
The problem with the Pink Floyd comparison is that the prism is actually an interesting image to look at. The cover to BFII is an interesting image to look at. So is the first one. FOABP is interesting because that kid is just looking at you, and its creepy. Its all in the eyes, there's a connection being made. All these are very simple covers but are great at capturing the mood of the album, capturing the attention of whoever's looking at it, and they give people a piece of artwork to admire and put on their t-shirts.
The new cover? Guy has his back turned. Looking at the sky through a window. Is it a nice image? Sure. Does it captivate and hold my attention for more than a few seconds? Nope.
-
Even though Porcupine Tree is my second favorite-band, i still feel like all of SW's side-projects can be better to me, depending on the mood.
-
https://vimeo.com/channels/blackfield#18648464
the first two songs sound like absolute garbage, the rest may be good, but overall i'm not happy with what i heard. first two album samplers gave me the chills, this one blows.
-
The album is now available for preorder:
https://www.burningshed.com/store/stevenwilson/collection/11/
-
SW sounds like Phil Collins at the 2:00 mark. But I'm not too impressed. I'm sure they'll all be better when we hear the full songs instead of this little montage.
-
Pre-ordered. aegfsdgsdg I hate how much it costs to ship to the US.
And I'm not gonna listen to any of the songs until the album is released.
-
pre-ordered cos i'm a sucker, i hope it turns out to be better than the sample.
-
The samples looks good to me! :tup I have the impression that this album will have a more orchestral feel to it, with strings and whatnot.
-
Going to see them live in April, surprised it's not called blackfield III though.
-

I don't get you guys, this sounds like it'll be my favourite BF album yet.
-
what the fuck is up with a PRIVATE EMBED? lol.
-
What I've heard from this preview, I've liked. I thought the music represented the artwork pretty well.
-
new song "Waving" good stuff :tup

New song is a vast improvement over "Glass House."
Huge.

yes
now, that's what I was expecting from this new Blackfield record. Effin A :tup

Sounds awesome!

Sounds like it could be on Lightbulb Sun. I like it though.
-
Sounds like it could be on Lightbulb Sun. I like it though.
That's not a bad thing. Anything that could be on Lightbulb Sun is amazing by default.
If it werenn't amazing, it wouldn't fit in Lightbulb Sun.
-
Oh, I love Lightbulb Sun. My post did make it seem like I didn't though :lol
-
Man that mini-pop orchestra in every song isn't really doing it for me.
-
Man that mini-pop orchestra in every song isn't really doing it for me.
You must not like Stupid Dream then.
-
I don't have the full album but I like A Smart Kid and Even Less well enough.
-
"Fuck you all, fuck you - fuck you all, fuck you; go to hell! go to hell!"
Brilliant lyrics.
That said, this sounds more up my street than the last two Blackfields, which both had moments but were overall a little underwhelming. Thought track 1 from the sample sounded a little too generic-prog, but the rest sounds like a dead cool pop album.
Can't hear much Aviv Geffen on it, at that. Which is always a plus in my book. Sounds richer, warmer, and less depressing than the previous albums. Which is fantastic.
Even if it does have a naff title.
-
US DATES ANNOUNCED!
Already bought my ticket :hat

I will definitely be at the Portland show. :caffeine:

Once again, I miss out on another tour :(

Am I the only one that doesn't really think Blackfield is all that depressing? I've seen people on this forum making it out to be "teh saddest muzic evaz" but it just seemed like the usual SW style (which in itself is depressing I suppose :P ) I actually think alot of PT stuff is sadder than the material on the two Blackfield albums, especially stuff like Heartattack and Stop Swimming.

A lot of PT is very sad in the bittersweet, heartbreakingly beautiful kind of way.
A lot of Blackfield is very depressing in the I'm-so-miserable, the-pain-hurts kind of way.
It's one of the reasons why PT is better than Blackfield.
-
Though I'd much rather deal with the lesser costs and hassles of a Philly show, I have something planned for that night, so if I hit this tour it will be at the NYC show.
-
Not sure if Blackfield is the saddest music I own, but it's up there for sure.
Songs like Lullaby and Hello can pretty much destroy me if I'm already feeling weak, or just having a bad day in general.

Good songs. Also very sad.

I've got sadder music without any lyrics. Bohren & Der Club of Gore.

Yeah. Some of the Blackfield lyrics border on emo-ness IMO. They're still enjoyable.
-
I wouldn't say PT are better then Blackfield, if I'm in the right mood for it, I'd take Blackfield over PT.
It's what I love the most about Steven Wilson, is that I love all his other projects equally, and sometimes depending on my mood even more then PT. :)
-
Some of Aviv's lyrics really bother me. I was talking to Quad about it before. SW also writes some very depressing sad lyrics, but I feel like the way he goes about it is more poetic. Aviv on the other hand reminds me of a emo kid in some of his lyrics. :lol
And I wouldn't say the music is the most depressing thing I own, but the albums are pretty sad from front to back. I actually think "Duke" by Genesis might be the most depressing album I own.
-
Aviv's live performance bothers me much. His shaky voice detracts a lot from the performance IMO.
-
Aviv is awesome, you guys should gtfo.
-
His voice is fucking atrocious.
-
His voice is fucking atrocious.
I don't even know what that means. :lol
-
His voice is fucking atrocious.
I don't even know what that means. :lol
atrocious: Of a very poor quality; extremely bad or unpleasant
And I have to agree. I've gotten to the point where I can tolerate it, but his voice held me off from Blackfield for a LONG time.
-
I don't have a problem with Aviv, although I prefer Steven obviously.
-
Yeah there's nothing wrong with Aviv, I can think of several vocalists that have a way more "off putting"-voice.
-
Aviv has his good moments and his bad moments vocally, but mostly I just don't like the grating quality his voice has sometimes.
-
"Shaky" is the best way to describe his voice, as someone else already said. That in combination with English not being his first language (I'm assuming) makes some of his songs hard to sit through.
-
I dunno whether the "he sounds like a fucking sheep" youtube comments are funny or annoying, but I think they're kinda right.
-
He sounds fine in the studio, but the live performances I've heard of him (Live in NYC, youtube vids) are not cool.
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwMrs27hxzY
I don't think he is a very good singer, but I have to say that he is very passionate when he does sing.
-
Zbomber @ I think it's a bit funny seeing as you have a Rush-avatar, and Geddy Lee's voice is way more off-putting then Aviv's is. :P
Overall I think the debate regarding singing is a bit lame, this is the 21st century, today singing isn't about having a huge range like it was in the 80's, today it's all about having a unique voice, which Aviv has.
If you don't like it, then just don't listen to it... it's as simple as that really. ;)
-
If we're discussing his voice, it's because we like the music enough to discuss something related to it. As simple as that really. ;)
-
For some reason, I kinda like Aviv's voice. It has a bit too much of the Casey Crezcendo-effect though
-
Yeah but my point is that you can learn to love pretty much everything, even though Steven Wilson has a great voice IMO, that really isn't his trademark either.
So I guess you could say that Blackfield consists of 2 non-singers singing? :P
-
I remember the first Blackfield I loved was Epidemic. I still love that one :heart
-

lol
Or I can voice my opinion like everyone else can.
I don't dislike Aviv because he doesn't have a "huge range". No one in this thread even mentioned that, and I'm pretty sure that isn't ANYBODY's problem with his singing. :lol He just has a very odd timbre to his voice, but more importantly what is so off-putting is he can't seem to hold a note without throwing in pseudo-vibrato, hence the sheep comments.
And yes, I listen to a lot of bands that have vocalists people don't care for. That doesn't mean that because I like those bands I have to think Aviv is a good singer.
-
Not at all.
But if you're going to be picky, you can find flaws with every singer out there. :P

The misery in Blackfield lyrics is kind of... well, laid on with a trowel. Which somehow makes it feel less sincere.

I believe it's actually spread on with a spatula, but yeah. It's sometimes overdone, and that tends to get in the way of the emotions it's trying to convey.

Ahhhh, Blackfield. I love their music so, so much. It's just so goddamn depressing.

Which album should I listen to first?

I'd go in chronological order... 1, 2, then Welcome to My DNA in a couple weeks. :tup
1 and 2 are both pretty short albums.

got that beautiful sucker too (a couple weeks ago). make sure you find some better inner sleeves, or those records are gonna warp hardcore from the tightass printed sleeves!
-
Actually, I didn't have much trouble with my sleeves for Blackfield. Recordings was a bitch and I was actually afraid I'd damage the record just trying to pull them out. Blackfeild's sleeves are tight, but the records seem to be ok. They fit in snugly, but I can pull them our pretty easily. What is weird is that the gatefold itself seems to be too tight, and the sleeves/records kind of bulge. I'm more worried about causing harm to the gatefold than the records.
The people on the PT forums said that this was the last one with these kinds of problems... Welcome to My DNA and Signify should be all set.
-
I just remembered the new album is almost out, awesome. I haven't heard a single second of it - so I'm really curious.

indeed, Pete Morgan from Burning Shed posted on the board saying that they sorted out the inner sleeves issue. i think it's just that they printed on thicker paper than was appropriate for the package — makes you wonder how they got the damn things in there in the factory!

I saw the album montage on Youtube (think it's legal?). "Go to Hell" sounds amazing, but those lyrics are crazy raw.

New video posted on their site (https://www.blackfield.org/). Great song!

Few more days to go :).

Just checked out the sampler and "Waving" and I have high hopes for this album.
I didn't like either of the first two albums with the exception of a few songs of each of the albums. This album seems more appealing, with the exception of the "Fuck you" lyrics which just make me giggle.

Got an e-mail saying the new CD/Vinyl has been shipped! :caffeine:

IT HASN'T LEAKED YET WTF
-
OH YES I DID TOO
-
IT HASN'T LEAKED YET WTF
Guess it will be tomorrow at it's latest. We get the album this Friday and a lot stores will have it in stock either today or tomorrow.
-
I always wait until the album is officially released anyways.
-
It has leaked I think. A few weeks ago there were videos on YouTube of some of the songs, and just to make sure, I listened to like 5 seconds of On the Plane (I think it was that) and yeah it was real. Not good quality though. The videos were soon taken down anyway.
I wouldn't recommend listening to leaks, it sort of kills the whole mood of the album. I made that mistake with A7X's Nightmare.
On another topic, I quite like the Waving promo video. Its not like their previous stuff since Lasse Hoile didn't make the video, but I liked No-man's "Back When You Were Beautiful" video and this has a similar style. I like how it reflects the modern mainstream 'artists' being like puppets.
-
So my vinyl copy of Welcome to my DNA arrived in the post today. ;D
It's a fantastic album

It's a fantastic album
how does it compare to BF I/II in your opinion?
-
When release dates are categorized in 'Europe' and 'US', where does Canada generally fall?
-
On track 9 (out of 11) now, on first listen I like it a lot more than BF I but a fair bit less than BF II. But apparently I'm the only one that doesn't really like BF I that much anyway.
-

Personally I think that the first BF album is the best by far, the second is still very good though. :P
-
Just finished, but yeah, basically exactly what I just said. Very good ending though.
-
I'm gonna wait until the album comes out to listen to it, but BFI is far superior to BFII in my opinion... although SW's tracks (Christenings and My Gift of Silence) are probably better than anything on BF1.
-
It came out here today, didn't get it yet though.
-
Going to see Blackfield! :D
-
New album is good! :tup
-
On my first listen of the album, song 6. The first few were a bit shakey imo, but then it's only gotten better as the album has gone on.
-
my promo copy hasn't arrived yet
-
Hah, it's general release now too :P
-
Not in the U.S. it isn't. >:(
-
I don't get why there needs to be a 3 week delay.
Oh well, it's in my favour so I guess I don't really mind :p.
-
Hah, it's general release now too :P
yeah I know, it was supposed to arrive on Tuesday but just hasn't turned up yet.
their loss, they'll just have to wait for the review.
-
So today I had some time to finally listen to the album. I think it's a solid album and I like the new direction in sound, if you get what I mean. As of now my favourite tracks are Oxygen, DNA, Go to Hell and Waving.
-
Just listened to the album. I liked it more as an album than the first to but overall I didn't like it. I'm just not a Blackfield fan, although Waving is a great, great song.
-
Does anyone know who is opening for them in the US? I haven't been able to find anything on it.
-
I don't think anyone is opening for them...
-
Works for me.
-
I wish my copy would arrive already :(
-
Mine didn't get here on Friday, so it looks like I'm going to have to wait 'till Monday. :-\
-
Listening to Blackfield right now. I just started it, but Open Mind is a great song. Looking forward to hearing the rest
-
It's funny because when it comes to Open Mind, I've always thought that it's a good song, but I still find it to be the 'weakest' on their first album.
Most people would disagree with me, but I can take that. :P
-
Got the album off iTunes last night, it has some good songs (Far Away, Glass House, Rising of The Tide) but as a whole I think it's their weakest yet. I've only given it a couple of listens so far though so it might grow on me over time.
-
I've listened through once or twice but got stuck on 'Blood' and ended up repeating that over and over again... not sure if it's as good as the last two albums but they tend to be growers for me anywho. Nice heavy 7/8/9/8 rockin bit at the end of Zigota threw me pleasantly.
Seeing them for the first time in London on April 8th... sooooooo very excited!!! This year is gonna be an epic conveyor belt of getting into one new album after another (Blackfield, dredg, Symphony X, Dream Theater, SW double solo album)... I'm salaviating at the prospect.
-
Anyone know if the album is out in uk shops yet?
-
Officially it's released tomorrow, not sure whether many shops will have stock in immediately though.

Think i'll just get the download.

-
Can't wait to see them on April 8th!
-
Seeing them May 20th with half of this forum. Should be amazing.
-
Listening to the album now, Go To Hell is awful :lol
-
Can't wait to see them on April 7th!
Yeh go to hell is pretty bad. Reasonably impressed with the album overall though..
-
Musically, Go To Hell is one of the best on the album. But lyrically, it is ridiculous.
Overall it is a very solid album.
-
The most important question, how many songs does SW sing lead on? From what I've read, Aviv's role in this album was much greater, so I was wondering if he is more prominent vocally as well?
I hope not...
-

I hope not...
Doesn't aviv normally write most of the material? Can't remember how many songs SW doesn't lead, possibly 3.
My favourite on the album so far is Oxygen, an aviv led one.

My favourite on the album so far is Oxygen, an aviv led one.
The first album seemed to be a pretty much 50/50 work. Aviv did most of the songs on BF2, but SW also wrote about 3 I think. However, I heard the only song SW wrote on the new album is Waving, and the rest were written by Aviv.
-
Personally I think it's great to see Aviv write some more, even though I love SW, Aviv has still written most of the really good Blackfield-songs, so it's kinda cool to see him write some more.
Plus, SW writes so much for other projects, it isn't really needed that he writes a lot for BF as well.
-
Once and My Gift of Silence are far and away their top two IMO, and I was under the impression that they were both SW's. To be honest, I'd much prefer Blackfield being a SW solo project focused on the warm pop sound, that it has anyway. His songs are teh best them.
-
Scars
-
I love this CD although I'm not much of a fan of the first two albums. Blood is awesome.
-
Songs like Blackfield, Epidemic, End of the World and Pain are simply epic. Classic tracks.
On the Plane, Oxygen and Rising of the Tide seem to be their next generation of epics IMO. I haven't heard all the songs yet though.
-
Haven't heard the new yet, but out of the first two I'd say the first album is easily better for me.
It has Scars, Lullaby, Summer and Hello, which are probably my top4 BF-songs. (not sure about the order though)
-
Listened to the new one yesterday and I must say I enjoyed it. Not as amazing as the first two, but still pretty great.
-
Blood best so far, Go To Hell is a bit silly and teen angsty coming from a middle aged guy but musically it is delicious. Pain is by far the best Blackfield track in existence.
-
Musically, Go To Hell is one of the best on the album. But lyrically, it is ridiculous.
Overall it is a very solid album.
I can't believe that it's supposed to be taken seriously, but it gives me a chuckle everytime it comes on.
Waving best so far

The mail can't come soon enough tomorrow...
-
What makes you think you'll get it tomorrow? :lol Aren't you in the US? I doubt we'll get ours for awhile... burningshed is VERY slow delivering to America. Takes 2 weeks usually.
-
But I want it nnnoooooooowwwww.
-
I DO TOO
But we were cursed as Americans when god decided to place Steven Wilson in the UK so we have to wait 2 weeks longer than everyone else
-
But I want it nnnoooooooowwwww.
I'd just grab it now, I ordered the album so I have no issue downloading it ahead of time.
-
It started off kinda slow, but definitely picked up in the second half. Blood, Oxygen, and DNA were the big highlights for me on the first listen.
-
After 2 listens i'd say highlights for me are
Oxygen, Rising of the Tide, Waving..
I doubt Blackfield (the song) will be beaten as my favourite.
-
Going through my first listen this morning!
First day back to school from spring break, just relaxing. Track five, "Far Away" just ended. So far, I've really, really loved all the songs except "Go To Hell," which I actually don't like. Unfortunately.
Excited for the rest especially based on what others have said!
Oh, "Dissolving With The Night" is nice too!
EDIT: Blood is super intense so far. Awesome!
-
i just received my copy, i like the album overall, mostly poppy which is ok. waving is really nice, i hope they play it in concert.
-
I like the album a fair bit.
My favorites so far:
Glass House
Waving
Far Away
On the Plane
Oxygen
-
My three favourites are Blood, Oxygen and DNA.
I felt a bit ashamed when a friend came in while I was listening to Go To Hell. Those lyrics are so bad...
-
Spinned this album two times, and I must say that it's pretty darn fantastic.
All songs are amazing (or better), and picking out early favorites seems like an impossible task, because they're all very good.
Lyrics in 'Go To Hell' are quite bad, but I don't really care much for lyrics, and the music in the song pretty much makes up for it.
If it weren't for the great music behind the lyrics, I would've complained more.
Love it how many new elements this album has, and how fresh it sounds, while still sounding very Blackfield.
Fantastic album overall.
-
I won't elaborate before my review gets posted but in a word...meh
-
OMG Blood is one of the best songs I've heard in a while can't get enough of it and whole album is amazing it may end up being my favorite Blackfield album. It's too early to rate it yet but it definetely has a chance. And Go To Hell is awesome BTW. Only musically of course but that's what matters.
-
Fuck, I dunno what album you guys have been listening to, but I'm listening with Quad right now and I think this might become my favorite Blackfield album
-
Just preordered it from Amazon. Should get it in a few millenia. I'm excited. :caffeine:

It wasn't much of a preorder if the album is already out. :neverusethis:

This. It's such a fucking good album.
-
Waving/Far Away/Dissolving With the Night/Blood
Best 4 song run ever.
-
Gonna have to say I agree. This is their best release.
This album is much less hit or miss for me than the other two. It's pretty much all hit. Go To Hell may be growing on me.
-
I should probably hear the second album before I get all over this one
-

Go To Hell is so lulzy, but at the same time I really like it. Usually that stuff completely turns me away from a song, but this seems to be the one case where it actually makes the song more enjoyable for some reason. :lol

...not in my country it ain't.
-
Man this album is hands down my favorite of 2011 this far.
Seriously, all the songs on this album are amazing or better, and I feel so sad that Blackfield aren't visiting Sweden on their tour, because I would love to hear this live.
Picking out favorites is really hard, but at the moment I'd say Far Away and Waving, but overall I can't skip tracks or listen to them separately, because I really want to hear all of it. :)
:heart
-
Waving/Far Away/Dissolving With the Night/Blood
Best 4 song run ever.
Dissolving with the Night = URRRGH worst song ever :-(
-
Song ranking (after about 4 listens):
Waving
DNA
Blood
Zigota
Far Away
Rising of the Tide
Dissolving with the Night
Go To Hell
Glass House
On The Plane
Oxygen
-
Oxygen at bottom? i'll respectfully disagree entirely :p
-
Yeah GTFO Mike
-
idk, something about the song rubs me the wrong way. Its almost too.... generic? sounding to me. Maybe/hopefully it'll grow on me though.
The lyrics are lame too... not more lame than Go To Hell, but yeah.
-
First listen now, so far Blood is my favourite.
-
This is really bothering me.. the ending of Rising of the Tide, it's so familiar but I can't place it!
A friend of mine said that it's a pretty common pattern that artists use, and I'm so certain that I've heard it before, but can't place it. :/
Song-rankings would be impossible for me to do, but I'll add DNA and Oxygen to the ones I already mentioned as my favorites.
Superb album. :hat
-
SO pumped for seeing these guys live next week. Expect they'll play most if not all the new album. Hope for plenty of gems from the first 2 albums too though :hat
-
Still gonna wait for the U.S. release, but the mostly positive initial reviews are nice to see. :tup :tup
-
Mostly positive here, but this forum is comprised of Wilson fanboys :lol (not that there's anything wrong with that).
Elsewhere, reviews consider it... fairly average, and I agree with them. It sounds pretty mediocre and uninspired to me. :-\ Has some good cuts (like Waving and Blood) but it's nothing too special, in my opinion. I'll keep trying, though.
-

While that's true, this is really more Aviv than Wilson. And honestly, I'm not a very big Aviv Geffen fan, but I really love this album.
It's very airy, and even more depressing than the previous albums. There are a couple tracks that are just OK, but all in all I really like it.

Oh, checking again... every song except Waving was written by Aviv. Hm. :lol
-
Yea, "Waving" was the only Wilson composition on this album. Aviv has definitely written some of his best stuff here though. His song writing capabilities have really grown since the last album.
-

Except that Aviv wrote a bunch of the best songs on the previous two albums too.
-
Aviv has always been a very good songwriter, and as I've said earlier, I do think that some of his songs on the earlier albums are amongst the best that Blackfield has made.
With that said, I do have to agree that he has really grown and taken another step up on the ladder with this album, personally I think it features some of his best work yet. (not talking about the Go To Hell lyrics) ;D
-
After a few more listens, it's a pretty meh album overall. Blood, Oxygen, and DNA are really the only ones I find myself wanting to come back to. :/

I don't think that it's the most depressing, Blackfield II does it for me. My Gift of Silence is just heartbreaking.
-

I'm going to have to agree with Sigz. A couple good songs mixed in with a couple songs I don't really care for. Nothing that is very bad, just nothing exceptional like on the previous two albums.

-
You guys are oh so wrong.
This.
Out of the albums I've heard so far this year (around 15), this one is my favorite. :P
-
This album's high points might not be as high as the previous two albums', but overall I think this album is much more consistent in it's song quality and feel to the album.
-
My Gift of Silence is just heartbreaking.
That is easily the best song from the first two albums. :tup :tup
-

This. It's Blackfield's best song, and probably a top 3 SW song for me.
-
Personally I don't like the chorus as much as the rest of the song, the verses are fantastic and the chorus surely is good, but I kinda love the verses so much that the chorus is a bit of a let down. :/

That
And my CD arrived today. No vinyl yet, but YAY finally I get to hear the album in a lossless format HUZZAH
-
The melodies seem to be presented in a more subtle way due to the laid-back feel of the songs. The other albums had 'epic' sections like Epidemic and End of the World which totally blows you away. Nevertheless, this is probably my favourite Blackfield album

Well said. This album is kind of "toned down", so I could see why some people might think it is uninspired, but honestly I think the minimum nature in a lot of the songs adds to the depressing vibe.
-
anathema confirmed as the opener for the NA shows
-
Damn. I REALLY wish they came closer to me now.
-
I guess it's time to try those guys out. I remember seeing their name around DTF before but that's about all I know.

*\o
-
Anathema is a pretty interesting choice for an opener. I've listened to WHBWH a few times but it looks like its gonna be needing a lot more spins from me in the next few months!
What is their back catalog like? I know it's more death metalish, so that probably won't be played since Blackfield is nothing like that.... how many albums does that leave them with to play?
-
WHBWH was a top 3 album for 2010.
I'M SO FUCKING EXCITED. LET'S GET DRUNK ON THIRSTY THURSDAY.

There's like 3 or 4 non metal albums IIRC
-
re: Anathema, you can go back as far as Eternity without treading full-on metal. The Silent Enigma isn't death metal, it's doom metal; only their first record has death metal growls (and, oddly, a 20-minute ambient soundscape, too). starting from Eternity and ending somewhere around Judgement, they get less and less metal, more traditionally rockish. and then from A Fine Day to Exit onward they've been some weird kind of Radiohead rock (a.k.a. pure win).
the best thing about the new Blackfield is the mastering. tons of headroom, the drum transients breathe even when it's loud, nothing is compressed too horribly. i'd really like it if SW finally went full-tilt against the loudness war at this point, especially with the apparently-quiet project with Åkerfeldt looming.

Nice to hear about the mastering. You a head-fier?
-
Wow. This is going be a hell of a show!
-
Go to Hell's lyrics are kinda hilarious...but hey, the music is amazing. The big crescendo is so fucking (fuck you all lol) amazing that it makes me forget 'bout lyrics (which is a good thing)
Amazing album.
-
Go to Hell is seriously stuck in my head though :)
The album gets better each listen I think. :corn
-
Nice to hear about the mastering. You a head-fier?
i'm not on Head-Fi, no. just training to be an audio engineer and obsessed with one day being the dude charging $2000/day for mastering things well! :P
-
Far Away is a gorgeous song. I just fell in love with it.

Nice goal to have in this day and age. I for one am tired of hearing the flaws. More dudes should care about mastering things well.
-

You kinda got it a bit wrong.
Their first album is very heavy doom-metal with growl-vocals, but I'd say it's the only album that really sticks out A LOT compared to the others, and it's an album that most fans avoid, mostly because Vinny doesn't sing on it. (he has been ever since)
The Silent Enigma which is their second album also has a lot of metal elements and can still be described as Doom Metal, but it's very atmospheric and not near as 'extreme' as Serenades. (the first)
After the first two the metal-side of Anathema was pretty much gone, and ever since they have been going more in an atmospheric rock-way, with a lot of progressive elements.
Check Judgement out, it's probably their best. :)
WHBWH wasn't the best album of 2010, but it was very good and only had a couple of minor issues.
-
Havent got the album yet, but it's good to see most reviews in here are positive.
More importantly, it seems there's a fair few of us going to the London gig, so who fancies a meetup?! I know we'll have me, Harry and Ian.
-
WE'D BETTER HAVE A MASSIVE MEETUP AND GET REALLY DRUNK AND THEN STALK STEVEN WILSON
-
WE'D BETTER HAVE A MASSIVE MEETUP AND GET REALLY DRUNK AND THEN STALK STEVEN WILSON
Definitely! I've only stalked bands twice, both were Steve Wilson (PT gigs) on DTF meetups. Has to happen again!
So I'm on my first listen of the album, really liking it. Lyrics in Go To Hell are a bit wtf, but the music is great, and I really loved Rising of the Tide, so romantic!
-
I'm going to the gig, will be dragging boyfriend/best friend along to queue quite early as it's my first time seeing Blackfield and I want a good place in the crowd! So probably won't come for a meetup, but do say hello if you see me... and feel free to call me Faye, not my board name, that'd just be creepy :P
-
:lol I call you that anyway. :P
I'm thinking I'll probably head straight from work, so can join queue early or go for drink somewhere else beforehand, whatever people prefer!
-
Or, drink IN the queue, amalgamation solves problem :D
-

-
Damn I can't wait for the Sheperd's Bush show!
-
Dee En Ayy
-
I'm only desperate for Once and My Gift Of Silence.
-
A lot of people from DTF do seem to be going to the concert this Firday
-
Definitely have to have a meetup!
Also, I just realized the Pineapple Thief is opening :O

Holy god, I'm so jealous. At least we get Anathema though.

Just so you guys know, definitely try asking attendants after the show if the band are meeting people upstairs afterwards. I've been to a few shows at Shepherd's Bush and this has happened a few times (I MET TED FROM SCRUBS) so I'm hoping I'll get to meet SW and assault him with fanboyism.
-
I'm a tad jealous of all you guys.

Someone better post a review of the show or else...

Glass House would be so much better if it didn't have that guitar bit after every single verse. It kills the flow of the song for me.

The most interesting thing about Blackfield reviews - especially this new one - is that everyone always assumes Steven Wilson is responsible for everything. I just read one comment on RYM where the guy was talking about how bad SW's lyrics are, and how finally there's an SW album he doesn't like.
But the fact of the matter, at least how I understand it, is that Blackfield is more of an Aviv Geffen thing. For WtMDNA, he composed all but one song. SW is important, but he shouldn't be getting all the credit or all the blame.

Was that Vaxis? He seems to have everything that's become popular these days. :lol His review and a couple of others also seem to bitch about the lyrics purely based on those in Go To Hell.
-
Well his actually isn't so bad! But the guy above him, Razor45, is like, "Who needs to go to hell Steven?"
Why does everyone assume that Blackfield is code for Steven Wilson? Geffen is definitely the mastermind. I'm not trying to blame Geffen if the new album sucks, the ignorance just shocks me.
-
Even though I love SW to bits, the mastermind in Blackfield has always been Aviv.
SW sure writes some songs here, some lyrics there, and puts his finishing touches to make it even better, but Aviv really is a genius.

Blackfield, to me, is just an amazing collection of heartbreak songs and some other cool songs, but nowhere near as profound as PT.
-
I'm a tad jealous of all you guys.
Yup.
-
I feel like the first album was a bit more of a collaboration, but the last two records have been mostly Geffen. Especially this one, where SW only wrote ONE song... I don't know how anyone can blame him for not liking the album. :lol
-
Definitely have to have a meetup!
Also, I just realized the Pineapple Thief is opening :O
WOAH WOAH WOAH. WHAT?!
Fuck. This is going to be amazing. I have no idea what I'm going to doing during the day while you guys are at work etc. :lol
I might sit in the cinema and watch free films all day :neverusethis:
-
I just think it's funny that Waving is easily the best song on the album (imo) and it's the only song SW got writing credit for. :lol
-
Waving is one of the best, but I wouldn't say THE best.
Far Away is probably my favorite.

I don't see the big deal about Waiting, it's nice but I'd put it around the middle of my rankings.

my thoughts

I swear I'm not trolling but that was a really bad review.
You spent almost half the article incessantly questioning the band's existence and then pretty much threw out the lyrics as all being shit because of "Go to Hell"
The lyrics on this album are some of their best, and even the music on GTH is amazing. It's certainly not cringe worthy at all (musically).
Maybe you need to listen again, but they certainly don't deserve a review like that.

Yeah I have to say, I kinda agree.

Maybe I just have a different opinion to you which I gave my reasons for in the review.
I did not question the band's existence at all, I said that to an outsider it may be hard to judge why they are about. You have to remember that 90% of the people who use our site will never have heard of Blackfield before in all possibility so a substantial section about the band is completely necessary. Also I used GTH as an example of poor lyrics because they lyrics on the song are shit and nowhere did I say that the lyrics on all the tracks were shit, just that they weren't anything special.
You're welcome to say that my review expresses a shit opinion but don't come here and start talking as if I haven't done my job properly, I really don't appreciate it. I'm a massive fan of almost everything SW has touched over the years so talking as if I'm just trying to unfairly bash the band is false as well as somewhat pathetic.
-
Ben he's not saying that your opinion was bad, but when half the review is discussing whether the band "has a point" rather than what the album is like, it's naturally going to not sit well with a fan of it. I also find it a strange approach to a review, but one that I see a lot online, particularly in negative reviews.
-
Rich, that's fine for us on here because we all know a lot about Blackfield but most of our readers do not. The first paragraph is all about how some might find it strange that this collabaration exists, what's the problem with that. The only judgement I make as a result of the introductory paragraph is a positive one,
Blackfield proved that it did have a point
. I could've spent that paragraph saying that this album was a total waste of time but I didn't because I wanted to make the point that even though many would say this is not a massively important project, I feel that there's no reason it should be considered as such.
And you can say he's not saying that your opinion was bad
but if that's the case why does the post which basically reads:
Really bad review as:
- You unfairly suggest that the band has no point (which I do not)
- The lyrics are amazing
- You need to listen again, you are clearly wrong / you clearly have not listened to the record enough
-
Well for a start you seem to think this album is vastly different to the first two in some way, which most of us really can't see at all, it's incredibly similar. So from that point of view, perhaps listening more is appropriate. But Quad may have meant that listening more will make you suddenly like it more, which would obviously be ridiculous.
And regarding the descriptive introduction, of course I can completely see the point of it, Blackfield are hardly a well-known band. For sure you pass a positive judgement in relation to their first two albums, it just seems strange to me to start by question the band's purpose in the first place. Surely just an introduction to who they are would be less controversial? Or am I missing the point on that one?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not attacking your review; like I said I just find the approach a little odd, and it makes the review fairly inaccessible IMO.
-
Fair enough, you've given reasons for your opinion Rich and that's fine. That's very different to just attacking something because you disagree with it.
I didn't say that it was musically or lyrically different from the first two records, so I'm not sure where you've got the thing about me saying it's vastly different from. I just say that the quality was not there this time because, frankly, I don't believe it was.
If I didn't question the band's purpose at the beginning then it'd just result in me being much harsher on the band about this album later on so actually it was a way of gently easing in to what I wanted to say believe it or not! :lol
-

I can kinda see that, but I'm not sure it's quite worked. :lol Ah well each to their own.
I don't understand your view of Blood either, I love it! Keeps getting stuck in my head.
-
I'm not gonna bash the review, but who cares if the project has a point or not? Wilson and Geffen obviously get along and like making music together; that is good enough for me. Not everything has to have a point. Sometimes, musicians want to get together and write music for the fun of it. To overanalyze it IS missing the point of music.

Does anyone else think that Oxygen sounds exactly like a Feeder song?

Not really :P

I think my dad would prefer that to having you bothering him all day. :P
Well, turns out I can't get free movies in other cities until after working there for 3 months so I guess I'll be wandering about London for a while.

Quick! Someone recommend me some songs so I can let them grow on me over the next month and a half.
My Gift of Silence. Probably the best Blackfield song.
-
Listening to the new one again in an attempt to like it more before the concert.
-
Ha, Waving totally is the best track. Oh well, guess I'm just really not a fan of Aviv's writing style.
-
I don't know. DNA and Oxygen are both close.
-
HOLY CARP GUYS
I seriously love the new album. It's a grower.
-
DNA is definitely my favorite on the new album, with Waving and Far Away close behind. It's so beautiful and depressing.
-
DNA's awfully good. It's certainly the song of theirs I've listened to the most since....yesterday....behind Epidemic anyway.
-
Two days to go!
Oh awesome, didn't realise you were coming! :D
So is everyone up for getting beers on the way and just drinking in the queue? :P
-
I'm not sure how it's going down for me, I'm getting a lift there and back with someone. I dont even know where I am as my friend bought the ticket for me.
Can you drop me your number and we can maybe meetup?
-
Sent you a text last night, do you still have the same number?
-
i think so but i didnt get it.
07866319311
-
Weird, I had a different number for you!
Anyway me, Harry and Ian are meeting at Oxford Circus at 5 and then heading to Shepherd's Bush from there; probably get a couple of beers from an offie and also some food of some kind, to eat and drink in the queue. Feel free to join us at any stage of the process!
Do you have my number from back at the Opeth gig (it hasn't changed) or shall I text you so you have it?
-
Nah I don't :( Text me instead
-
I didn't realise that Aviv wrote all but one song.
I do prefer DNA to Blackfield 1, but to be honest I think they should have waited till Wilson had more time - it's not really the real dynamic of Blackfield now, and we'll have to wait several more years till we hear a true collaboration - because that is what Blackfield is about.
-
Anyone go to the manchester gig last night? Pretty good, was v happy with the tracks from the first album :hat
-
Eh, the first album is my least favourite.
-
Eh, the first album is my least favourite.
Each to their own, I reckon alot of people here would say it was their favourite though. I'm pretty keen on all 3 though.
-
The first is the best, or well at least out of the first two.
It's hard to rank Welcome to my DNA next to the other two after just a few spins, but the first is better then the second by quite a bit.
-
Had this in my hands today, but didn't buy it. I dunno why...
-
I just heard, Lullaby. Great song.
-
Well that was awesome.
in b4 five million pictures from Harry
-
Pic please. Also of Rich's shower.
-
Did anyone get arrested? I imagine some pant-less shenanigans took place in and outside of the venue.
-
Some of Harry's photos will be up shortly, just uploading to photobucket now!
He'll upload the lot to facebook (including the photos of the bands) when he gets home.

Actually on first album SW has credit only on two songs which are Blackfield and Lullaby. And Lullaby is kind of a B-Side from In Absentia.
And on second album SW has credit only on three songs Once, Christenings and My Gift Of Silence and Christenings is also just a B-Side from Deadwing so that means that SW was never writing very much for Blackfield with full credit. But I think that there is some collaboration from SW's side even if the song is credited to Geffen. You know that "you wrote majority of it so let it be your song" kind of thing.
-
I did a full runthru of their discography. I give the second album 10/10, the first 8.5/10, and the third 7/10. Will keep listening but I think I'm probably more of a PT guy at the moment.
-

So..........NYC meetup?
-
Waving is now on Spotify, pretty cool song! :tup
-
Waving is a good song, I enjoy it, but the video is godamn awful and now impregnates my brain with horrible images every time I listen to it.
-
I hope they make a video for Oxygen since its their other single.
-
Rising Of The Tide is hands down the best song of WTMD.
-
Alright, I'm listening to this album now, and I'm really really REALLY sad that the only lyrics on "Go to Hell" are "Fuck you all, fuck you" and "go to hell," especially since the music underneath is really good.
EDIT: Okay, the run from Rising of the Tide to Far Away is really good. If the rest of this album is this consistently good I'll be happy.
-
some of these songs are growing on me, but the lyrics are so bad, ugh
I agree with SDN that the Rising of the Tide/Waving/Far Away run is the strongest part of the album.
-
I really like the lyrics to DNA and Far Away. The other songs either don't do much for me (Oxygen, On The Plane) or I don't really pay attention to them.
And even though everyone is all frazzled about Go To Hell, the lyrics no longer bother me. Not good by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't really even think of them as "lyrics". Same thing with Blood really.
-
Okay, with the exception of "Go to Hell," this is actually a pretty good album. Maybe not as strong as the first two, but its a respectable addition. Going to be listening again soon, of course, but that's my first impression.
-

I agree :yarr

I love the music of 'Go To Hell' to and was also a bit confused as to why the lyrics were so rubbish, but at the gig the other night Aviv said 'I'd like to dedicate this song to my parents' then launched into it, so it makes a bit more sense now, it's actually about something that's happened between him and his parents which makes it more acceptable and personal to me. I do wonder what happened, though... it's a pretty strong statement.
-
Waving is by far my favourite, and was amaaaazing live.
Anyone know the whole 'story' of the album yet, if there is one? I can't pick up on anything past, y'know, DNA being featured a lot...
-
go to hell is great, it's sort of a tantrum of ' i don't have to make sense, fuck you i'm RAMPAGING' song.
-
some of these songs are growing on me, but the lyrics are so bad, ugh
Because of that one song?
The rest of the lyrics are fine.
Rising Of The Tide is hands down the best song of WTMD.
Yeah I've decided it's my favourite as well. The section at the end! :heart

There's a YouTube video on Blackfield's official channel where Aviv talks about each song (except Far Away :-[ )

So..........NYC meetup?
Definitely.

Oh man I always forget about On the Plane. I guess it's just a really forgettable song, definitely the weakest on the album.
-
are acidrainlte's photos up yet?
-
Ahhhhh ok yeah they're up on facebook! And the ones of us I posted in the Post Your Pic thread!
-
Eh, uh, oh boy. I'm on Far Away, and this isn't working. Glass House isn't their best song, but a really nice opener. From there, nothing's hit me. Far Away's barely good enough to keep me going.
-

Blood and Zigota are pretty good, as is DNA. So atleast try those out.
-
Meh. This really isn't the level of quality I expected. I thought Aviv Geffen writing all the songs might be interesting, but it ended up not working. The lack of Steve Wilson influence is really clear. Wilson tends to write tighter stuff musically. There were a couple moments where things felt genuinely disorganized a bit. Glass House and Oxygen are the only ones that really stand out.
-
So, listened to it again, and I agree with ReaP in that the lack of SW is really apparent. However, there are some gems on the album: Waving, Zigota, Far Away, Oxygen, and DNA.
-
Yeah, I'd still say the ones with heavy SW influence on the album are the best... Waving, any of the guitar solos, and even though Aviv wrote Zigota the time changes at the end scream SW to me.
-
This or hold out for new dredg?
-

Listen to it more, some of the other songs are amazing.
And regarding your point about SW influence, this has already been discussed but he wrote very little on the other albums as well. Blaming that for you liking the album less is a bit of a cop out to be honest.
-
Aviv is a very capable songwriter as well, he's just far from being at his best here.
-
Eh, uh, oh boy. I'm on Far Away, and this isn't working. Glass House isn't their best song, but a really nice opener. From there, nothing's hit me. Far Away's barely good enough to keep me going.
I'm too busy listening to 'Once' on repeat to listen to their new album as much as I was, it's good but not incredible, some good songs on there however.
-
Once is by far their best song imo. Like, seriously by a long way.
-
Not sure if I would say best but it's definitely up there :D
-
ONCE IS AMAZING
-
Once is good, but not really a favorite.
-
Does anyone else thinks Steven Wilson sounds a LOT like Phil Collins in late 70s Genesis for the first half of "Far Away?" Especially the chorus, the way he sings "To put my smile on" just sounds like Phil. Obviously its because all English vocalists sound the same, right? :neverusethis:
EDIT: Okay, I've listened to this album at least once a day since I got it and its a good album. Not as great as the first two, but they should be proud of it. Except "Go To Hell." Surely Aviv could have found a better way to express his anger, hate, etc. at his parents.
-
Once is by far their best song imo. Like, seriously by a long way.
I really fell in love with the live version of that song. The album version is . . . too sterile? The tempo is a touch slower on the album as well, which keeps it a bit more mellow.
-
New album is pretty darn great, I'd rank it over the second album but just below the first one.
The lyrics in 'Go to Hell' really is the only 'lowpoint', and it's a bit disappointing seeing as the music behind it is so good.
Far Away is my favorite, followed by Oxygen and Waving. :heart
-
Blackfield II > Welcome to my DNA > Blackfield.
-
II>I>DNA, but DNA is still really good. The first two albums are just flawless.
-
Just got DNA and I'm giving it a listen now.
Edit: Go to Hell would be light years better if there was different lyrics. I loves the chordal changes in the chorus but damn those lyrics.....
-
Considering I think the first two are average at best, the comments here have persuaded me to forget about this one for awhile. Until like I really need to buy a new record and nothing is out.
-
Considering I think the first two are average at best, the comments here have persuaded me to forget about this one for awhile. Until like I really need to buy a new record and nothing is out.
But if people love the first two and you think they are "average at best", then why would you trust their opinion on the new one? Obviously you have different tastes.
-
Personally, I think the third album is more consistent than the other albums, but the high points on DNA aren't as high as the high points on the first two albums.
-
Personally, I think the third album is more consistent than the other albums, but the high points on DNA aren't as high as the high points on the first two albums.
That.
-
It's still great how this sideproject has 3 albums, all which are so great.
Most people seem to prefer BFII, though I personally prefer the first album.
DNA is really good as well, and as I said earlier it would rank in higher then BFII but lower then BFI for me.
-
BFII > DNA > BF
-
BFII > DNA > BF
This is correct.
-
BF > DNA > BFII for me, even though my favorite BF songs are on BFII. It's kinda weird I guess. I'm just not a fan of Aviv's songs on that album.
-
I agree DNA is more consistent than the other 2 (but not quite as good), it just needs a killer track like blackfield/epidemic for me..
-
I agree DNA is more consistent than the other 2 (but not quite as good), it just needs a killer track like blackfield/epidemic for me..
Blood is killer enough for me
-
Blood is a bit too repetitive for my taste.
Don't get me wrong, I still really like it though.
-
I'm fine with repetition as long as the thing that's being repeated is good. "Here Comes the Blood" is much better than "Go to hell."
-
Well I'm not only talking about the lyrics, the main-riff is great, but kinda gets repetitive.
I kinda get the feeling that people who normally don't write heavy music kinda often stumbles upon the problem that it gets a bit too repetitive when they try to pull it off, in this case I'm taking it's Aviv that wrote it.
-
You think "Blood" is repetitive and yet you listen to Opeth? lol
(Not that Opeth is bad by any means, they're one of my favorite bands. But they're a lot more repetitive than any Blackfield song)
-
Well, to be fair I haven't really listened to Opeth in 2 years or so. :P
And well, by what I wrote I mean that Blood is repetitive by Blackfield-standards, and I'm not as captivated by it compared to some other songs, though obviously it's a great rock out-song, and the singing is great.
Far Away is still my favorite, I love it how simple and beautiful it is, and how some string-arrangements can really lift a song.
Not sure if it has gotten love in the thread before, but I really love the use of strings on this album, it's really done in the right amount and in the right places. :heart
-
But they're a lot more repetitive than any Blackfield song
Um. Wat.
Well, to be fair I haven't really listened to Opeth in 2 years or so. :P
WHY?!
but I really love the use of strings on this album, it's really done in the right amount and in the right places. :heart
I noticed this when I saw them live, very true :)
-
So, Waving might well be the only song I ever listen to from this album again. Far Away is pretty good too, but the rest of it is very sub-par imo. Not that I didn't really enjoy it live, but still.
-
Well, to be fair I haven't really listened to Opeth in 2 years or so. :P
WHY?!
Well, music kinda comes and goes in waves for me.
I still love Opeth a lot, but I know their albums in and out, and it's not really music that I can put on at any time, it has to be Autumn/Winter and the feeling has to be there.
Another fact would be that Opeth are kinda dead right now, sure they're recording a new album that I'm looking forward to, but until that one comes out or any tour dates are announced, I don't really think about them.
-
The use of the strings make the album I think. So much emotion and sadness
-

Another fact would be that Opeth are kinda dead right now, sure they're recording a new album that I'm looking forward to, but until that one comes out or any tour dates are announced, I don't really think about them.
If you can't put on Ghost of Perdition at any time of the day/year then there is something wrong with you :P
-
Nah, I see what Zantera means completely. It's summery weather now and it would ruin either the music or the summery feeling if I played Opeth. I have this with Sigur Ros too, among other bands.
-
Agreed. If I'm going to listen to heavy music, its going to be Devin or Iron Maiden during the spring/summer.
-
You guys are fucking weird, Opeth is Opeth.
-
Opeth is Opeth.
They are, and Opeth is a band that many people prefer to listen to in the fall/winter. Not sure what's so hard to understand about that.
-

Exactly. Some bands make music that fits certain seasons just perfectly. For example, Van Halen is great summer music. Opeth is great fall, winter or rainy day music. Listening to Opeth on a sunny day just seems weird.
-

Right, but avoiding listening to them in Spring/Summer is what I don't get.
-

QFT
-
It's not only about seasons and such, but when it comes to Opeth I feel like I know their entire discography in and out.
Obviously there's nothing wrong in going back and checking out albums you love, but I prefer giving artists some rest and check out new stuff, I feel like the music world is so big, that narrowing yourself down to X-amounts of artists is just a shame.
-

Right, but avoiding listening to them in Spring/Summer is what I don't get.
pretty simple. it's melancholic music with cold/distant soundscapes which goes with the weather of fall/winter. spring/summer is more of a happy time which doesn't fit with the music. i feel the same way, some melancholic rock like opeth or katatonia in fall as the cold breeze and red leafs pass you by makes the experience 'especially special'.
-
I doubt anyone goes out of their way to avoid listening to Opeth in the spring or summer, but I am a lot less likely to listen to them then than I am in the fall or winter (unless it is a rainy day or late at night).
Anyway, I finally got the new Blackfield CD and it is sounding great so far!

My review of Welcome To My DNA: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/43055/Blackfield-Welcome-To-My-DNA/#lastpost
WARNING: I slammed it.
-
Dude what?
Welcome To My DNA is simply amazing, and apart from the lyrics in Go To Hell I really don't see anything negative about it, musically it's fantastic.
-
I at least attempt to justify why I disagree with you in my review, although I seem to be in the minority 'round these parts.
-
Well, I don't really get the hate for it.
Mostly because apart from a very few factors, like Aviv writing most of the stuff, this still sounds as much Blackfield as the first two albums did.
Song-wise the songs are just as strong as on the other two albums, sure people might say that this album has no classic in the sense of songs like "Hello" or "Once" on the first two, but the songs on WTMDNA are so good that it isn't needed.
I don't even care that much that SW didn't write much for the new album, because looking back at the other two albums, Aviv has always been the 'main'-writer for this project.
Surely SW has polished stuff and added his input, but that's another thing.
'Waving' is a fantastic song, but it's also something that feels really typical SW, Aviv on the other hand has delivered songs that I wouldn't have expected him to write, because a lot of the songs doesn't feel 'typical' Aviv-songs.
So yeah, in other words I really dig this album. :P
-
Well, they might not feel like typical Aviv songs, but to me they just sound like the most typical, uninspired songs I've heard from a band that I like in as long as I can remember. As I mentioned in my review, 'On The Plane' is just absolutely dismal, and kind of symptomatic of an artist that doesn't seem to have run out of ideas, but has just stopped even putting any effort in.
Still, I enjoyed the concert a lot anyway. :lol
-
Upon my first listen, Waving is easily the best song, and I like Blood a lot. Not much else stood out, but I'll have to listen to it some more (while I can focus on it) before I pass judgment.
-
It was more than one on both albums, though.
-
The new album is good, save the lyrics of Go to Hell. Its just less amazing than the first two. I've listened to it almost every day since I got it.
In this paragraph I had a paragraph-long critique of your review, but I just got really frustrated with it and your overblown statements about Blackfield's creativity (or as you think, lack therof). I disagree almost completely (again, GTH and On the Plane are points I agree with you on), but the overly harsh language and the use of what you called "buzzwords" that aren't helpful to the reader made it a pretty bad review, to be honest.
Basically, it is exactly what you thought it'd be: overly harsh. Next time you type that sentence fearful of how you'll come across, you should edit the review to make it a bit more sensible. :P
-
Fair enough. I did try to think of a way around coming off as sounding too harsh and calling it out for being generic, but that really is how I feel about the album unfortunately.
Also, I see your side of the argument on my statements about Blackfield's creativity being overblown, but I genuinely feel that the key flaw with the album isn't that it fails, it just doesn't even have the kind of spark that even the bad tracks on the first two albums had. I guess I just feel like it's a complete phone-in, which is why I reference their previous creativity so much.
-
First listen: Go to hell is a horrible song, the rest needs many more listens.
-
I actually think Go To Hell is one of the few tracks that at least has interesting stuff going on melodically. But yeah, the lyrics make me laugh. 'Twas fun live, though.
-
I've not looked at the setlist, and it makes me very sad to know that song is in it.
-
The lyrics are laughably bad, but "Go to Hell" is pretty catchy. The repetitive nature of the lyrics is quite hypnotic. It was stuck in my head all evening.
-
I really don't get the hate for 'On the Plane', it might not be a favorite, but I certainly wouldn't rank it last.
Attempt at ranking songs:
1. Far Away
2. Oxygen
3. Waving
4. DNA
5. Zigota
6. Rising of the Tide
7. Glass House
8. Blood
9. On the Plane
10. Dissolving With the Night
11. Go To Hell
Something like that.
-
Zigota
Waving
Oxygen
Far Away
DNA
Blood
Rising Of the Tide
---quality drop of some kind---
Go To Hell
Glass House
Dissolving With the Night
On the Plane

I'm surprised with the hate for On The Plane, its one of my favourites from the album. I love the Floyd-esque style to it :hat

I'm not just surprised I'm actually shocked from the hate for On The Plane, it's chorus was one of those parts of album that made me think "this album is great" from the first listen.

Probably the most I've ever seen an opinion be the opposite of my own, ever. :lol
-
On The Plane is easily the weakest on the album.
-
Guys, Waving.
/discussion
-
On The Plane is easily the weakest on the album.
Not really.
-
Glass House is amazing, mang. :sadpanda:
I dunno, the vocal melodies really bug me. They sound awkward or forced or...something.
-

I agree with this. The jazzy guitar line's alright, though.
-
So far, I'd say the new album is about as good as the first one, but not as good as the second one. I've listened to all of them a lot over the past few days (which has been easy, given how short they all are), and the second album is definitely my favorite.
-
I'm probably one of the few that holds the first album as my favorite. :P
-
Not sure which albums my favourite to be honest... it depends on what mood I'm in seeing as though each album has a significantly different sound for the most part
-
I think II's the only good one, so that's my favourite. I's alright though.
-
Do you know some bands that are similar to Blackfield ? I love this band so much, and I'd like to know if there are other stuff out there in the same vein.
-
Just saying but I don't like Waving all that much, it sounds like a rehash of Disappear.
Zigota is great though, but as with the other Blackfield albums there are about three songs on it that I love and the rest are pretty meh
-
Not into this at all at the moment, so I won't even try to begin on 'DNA'. I do know I liked the first two records just a bit (the first one a little bit more). Just watched the 'FoaBP' portion of the Anesthetize DVD with friends, and it was awesome. Epic set, really, damn.
-
So, NY show in a week and a half. Who's down?

So, NY show in a week and a half. Who's down?
There's gonna be like 7+ of us there.

The news from Blackfield:
"Blackfield is very happy to announce that our friend Jordan Rudess will be special guest at our shows in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Mexico City. Jordan will perform a solo set."
-
:O
I'm jelly.
-
Even more excited for the show now. :o
-
Was at the show last night in DC. It was a solid, albeit slightly louder than necessary, show. Since I don't know the song titles well enough, can't give you a setlist, but I did recognize a few tracks. Overall, a great night of music between them and the two guys from Anathema who opened the show with an acoustic set...
-
Wait, Anathema isn't playing as a full band?!?
-
Wait, Anathema isn't playing as a full band?!?
No, and given how huge the applause they were getting, it is safe to say that a lot of people were there to see Anathema last night.
https://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=158252
Vincent Cavanagh of the U.K. atmospheric rock band ANATHEMA has issued the following update:
"This week, due to circumstances outside of our control, the full band will not be able to travel to the U.S. to perform with BLACKFIELD. Despite making every effort and exploring all avenues to make this trip possible, we were not able to find a solution.
"Our fans are our number one priority and so as not to let you down, we've generated enough support to keep most of our American Dream alive but this does still mean a few unavoidable changes to the plan.
"We wanted to let you know that instead of the full band appearing, myself and Danny [Cavanagh] will now be performing acoustically. We're really excited as it's our first time in the States and with absolute respect for fans who have bought tickets, we want to go over and give you a great show. Even though we'll be focusing mainly on the newer material, we're still ready to play some of the old songs if people want to hear them! In fact, to us, these acoustic gigs are more special and exciting in a way — they are less structured and more improvised than a full band show — there's room for a bit of freedom on the night. Additionally, due to the unprecedented style of these shows we have decided to record these rare acoustic performances for forthcoming special releases and exclusive online content.
"We really feel this is just the beginning OF ANATHEMA's U.S. story and Danny and I are looking forward to meeting everyone. We will be on the merchandise stand after every performance to greet you all and we will do our best to make sure the full band gets to tour in the USA as quickly as possible, perhaps even headlining before the end of the year.
"Whilst we realise this is a significant change from the original plan and we are disappointed that we can't perform with the full band, we are thrilled that we can still play to our fans in the USA. In true ANATHEMA spirit, the show WILL go on."
"We're Here Because We're Here", the eighth studio album from ANATHEMA, will receive its long-overdue U.S. release on June 7 on The End Records. A special, limited-edition deluxe edition will include three bonus tracks, a seven-inch single with two unreleased tracks, and a DVD 5.1 Surround Sound version of the album, along with the stereo version, both mixed by Steven Wilson of PORCUPINE TREE.
-
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE. Sure it will still be a good show, but I was really looking forward to seeing the full band perform.

I ordered that shit a couple weeks ago SO EXCITE
-
Well, you shouldn't think of the whole situation like you're missing out on Anathema.
You should look at it and think: "hey, I get to see these guys perform something truly unique, something they might never do again, and I'm one of the lucky people who get to see it".
-
Yea, I for one would really like to see them play a acoustic set with just the two of them. But I understand that people who have never seen them as a full band might be a bit disappointed.
-
Stop complaining, Danny on his own was excellent acousticly, i'm sure with Vince it'll be twice as awesome.
-
So. Show tomorrow.
Who when where what how etc?
-
Hey Voxyn, are you saying somehow Anathema or Blackfield will come to the Netherlands :caffeine:

Hey Voxyn, are you saying somehow Anathema or Blackfield will come to the Netherlands :caffeine:
Nope, it's not what I'm saying. Blackfield was here a month back though :p. Anathema visits the Netherlands multiple times per tour though, so it shouldn't be too long until they are back.
Was just saying that I've seen Anathema a couple of times already and would love to see an acoustic set ;).

That was the first time I ever heard them in any fashion at all and I loved every second of it. I Would go see them live anytime - fantastic live band (uh.. two guys, anyhow).

Did I miss another thread about this show someplace? I thought nick would've posted the fantastic setlist by now, and bragged about how my seats (our seats) were right by jordan rudess and the guitarist from fate's warning.

Same here! Sorry we didn't get alot of time to hang out before the show.. they had a weird setup with having us in a different line to get the will call tickets at first and all that.
-
How was the VIP thing? Get to hang out with Steven?
-
We had to leave to catch the last bus out of the city before Steven came out. :(
But it was an amazing show by both bands and it's always awesome to talk to JR and meeting Frank Aresti was a real treat since FW don't tour the states.
-
Just got back from the Boston show.
Brilliance.
Anathema blew me away. Blackfield/SW was amazing, as expected. I also got front row AGAIN. SW came over and did almost all of the guitar solos right next to me. He also leaned over into the crowd so he was actually right above me!
I got some pics with my cell, I'll upload them tomorrow.

Honestly, I'm surprised I got that close. I was just planning to be somewhere in the middle. We lined up maybe an hour and a half before show time and we were probably the 15th/16th people in line.

Maybe you weren't. ;)

Glad you guys had fun!

Its okay, I saw Porcupine Tree, Coheed, and The Dear Hunter all in one night.
-
Rather see great bands separately then in one night, seeing as it means shorter sets. ;)
-
I saw Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Demians and Textures in one afternoon. With PoS and Opeth playing full sets.
Do I win?
-
Can somebody say what songs Rudess play in the concerts?
-
Can somebody say what songs Rudess play in the concerts?
Well, I can remember a couple. Most of them were pretty "Jordanized" versions of songs (I don't mean that as some kind of insult).
Hollow Years
Moonchild, off his iPad (King Crimson cover) This was so cool!
Hey You (Pink Floyd cover) This was mostly tons of notes with the the only recognizable part of the song being the chorus. This Jordanized version I wasn't really into.
Even Less (PT cover WITH STEVEN FUCKING WILSON ON GUITAR)
Probably some of his solo stuff I didn't recognize since I haven't heard any of it.
An excerpt from Explorations. This was so cool! I wish I could have seen the whole thing.
That's all I can remember. It was a great performance. :tup
-
Sounds similar to the solo show he did in NYC back in January.
Must have been amazing to see SW on the Even Less cover. :tup

bout to crash, Thanks for sharing the pics. Yeah, that's me in the 5th pic from the bottom right in front of SW (hat and glasses). Apparently you were right behind me. My brother is in the last 3 pics, far right. :metal

Cool pics Jackie!
Just watched the Live in NYC DVD, SO GOOD! :D

Sweet! I guess I got a few of you then. I'm assuming that's also you in the two that are a few above that one (with SW in the background)- I really like those two.

Blackfield....
I'm just starting to listen to them! Have enjoyed thoroughly what I've listened to so far and would love some recommendations for songs and albums and such...
As it were I have Blackfield ( the self titled album ) and II.th
-
They only have three albums, so the only one you're missing is Welcome to my DNA. It's good, but not nearly as good as the first two.
-
^^^ That
But really, the only song you actually need is Go to Hell.
:neverusethis:
-
Ah well.
Awesome then. thanks!
-
They only have three albums, so the only one you're missing is Welcome to my DNA. It's good, but not nearly as good as the first two.
It's better than Blackfield I by far.
-
I'd say Welcome to my DNA is better then Blackfield II, but nowhere near Blackfield I.
-
BF I and II are perfect. WtmDNA is just below them both.
-
II>>>>>>> I >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>DNA
-
II>>>>>>> I >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>DNA
I'm about here.
-
I'm not sure where exactly I am, but II is definitely my favorite, I love I... and DNA is actually really growing on me, especially after that show. I'm getting past the lyrics.
-
I like all three equally. They are all great albums.
-
I'd say Welcome to my DNA is better then Blackfield II, but nowhere near Blackfield I.
Agreed. Blackfield II has my favorite songs, but all in all is probably my least favorite album because of Some Day and Miss U. The only other Blackfield song I don't like is On The Plane. BF1 is flawless imo.
-
Agreed. Blackfield II has my favorite songs, but all in all is probably my least favorite album because of Some Day
WUTWUTWUT?!
-
You better have been saying that as Sheila Broflovski.
-
Agreed. Blackfield II has my favorite songs, but all in all is probably my least favorite album because of Some Day
WUTWUTWUT?!
Gotta agree with this, Some Day is actually my favorite on BFII.
-
Gross. Some Day has one of the most boring vocal melodies I've ever heard. Music is also repetitive and boring. And the horrible lyrics! "They'd like to have you in their members' club" lawlz
I thought it was widely accepted as one of the worst BF songs. :lol
-
Thinking that any song from BFII is bad is the wrong opinion and you are wrong for having it.
-
Thinking that any song from BFII is bad is the wrong opinion and you are wrong for having it.
Except Some Day
And Miss U
-
BFII is very solid overall, the only think that has it beaten is that I love more songs on BFI and Welcome to my DNA.
But yeah, Some Day is one of my favorites on BFII, the only song I like more is This Killer, which is quite possibly the most underrated BF-song, it's just AMAZING.
One of their best for sure.
-
Thinking that any song from BFII is bad is the wrong opinion and you are wrong for having it.
Except Some Day
And Miss U
Some Day's chorus is a bit eh, but the verses are great.
Miss U is awesome!
-

Miss U is awesome!
I assume it should be "verses"? :P
-
You better have been saying that as Sheila Broflovski.
Exactly :lol
I originally wrote it out as WATWATWAT but then I realized I'd written "twat" twice.
-

good thing you fixed it then, because there's a three twat minimum.
-
Oh shit, thanks for the heads-up!
-
Oh shit, thanks for the heads-up!
No problem. So now that you and I are both here, who's the third?
:lol :p
-
I feel like I've been summoned somehow.
-
SUDDENLY, the king of twats appears!
-
So I've been listening to all three Blackfield albums on heavy rotation since the killer Portland show and the diagnosis is this: Welcome To My DNA is now my favorite by far. Those songs went over so well live that I now listen to them differently. It's like I'm listening to a completely new album all over again. It's a work of art.

I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but seeing them live definitely made a huge difference for me as well.
-
This just in, My Gift Of Silence is the best Blackfield song.
-
Not even close. End of the world is the best them.
-
This just in, My Gift Of Silence is the best Blackfield song.
I really like this song but I'm not a big fan of the chorus.

Agreed. Perhaps one of the best SW songs as well.

The chorus is my favourite part!

Would someone who doesn't like Blackfield I like Welcome to My DNA? I know it probably sounds like an obvious question but I'm strapped for cash and would rather ask someone in the know.
-

Kinda depends.. why don't you like Blackfield I?
Or, what are the reasons you don't like it?
-
I dunno, it's just all the same thing: all dreary and mellow and morose. I have no problem with mellow as long as it's happy once in a while, or at least not "Oh my God I want to kill myself" all the time. :lol
-
I get the feeling a happy Blackfield song would cause mass suicides worldwide.
-
I dunno, it's just all the same thing: all dreary and mellow and morose. I have no problem with mellow as long as it's happy once in a while, or at least not "Oh my God I want to kill myself" all the time. :lol
Then you probably won't like WTMDNA. It even includes Go To Hell, written by Aviv for his parents. :lol
-
I listened to Epidemic yesterday and enjoyed it, but then a couple other songs on the same album were kind of boring. Do they have more songs like Epidemic?
-

So basically it's another whole album with songs that will make me want to curl up and die. Awesome, thanks for the heads up! :p

No problem. ;) If you are that type of person who gets depressed easily then Blackfield probably isn't for you. But some people find beauty in sadness. Imo, WTMDNA is a masterpiece.
-
Oh I can find beauty in depressing music just fine, it's just Blackfield I is another after another after yet another so by the end you're just :| :sadpanda:
-

Well, all three Blackfield albums are very similar and I don't think Aviv or SW will change anything about their formula anytime soon. Blackfield is Blackfield so you know what to expect. Just letting you know.
-
After having listened to it a couple times on stream ages ago, I finally got my physical copy of Welcome to my DNA. What an underwhelming album. :-\
-
How much have you listened to it? There are still a couple tracks I'm not crazy about, but I started to like it a lot more after a while... and after seeing them live again.
-
Welcome to MY DNA is an ok album. I still like it, and I think its one of their more consistent albums, but the songs themselves aren't as strong as many on the previous two albums.
Also I totes had a dream last night I was making out with this girl and Blood was playing because for some reason dream-me totally thought that sad depressing music is appropriate for making out.
Also the girl was someone I went to high school with except now she had a skullet. Man, that was a really weird dream, now that I think about it...
-
:lol :lol
Also, did you just say "totes"?
-
:lol :lol
Also, did you just say "totes"?
Totes.
-
Thought I'd put my hand up and say Blackfield are really good. Picked up Welcome to my DNA a couple of weeks ago and finally got a chance to listen to it last night. Great stuff. Next steps...?
-
Either of their other albums is a safe bet. You have nowhere to go but up. :tup
-
So, what's the verdict on the third album? Can't be arsed to go through all those pages.
-
There isn't really one. People's opinions on it are kind of all over the map.
I know I think it's a great album. It's just not as good as I or II.
-
Yep.
-
I > Welcome to my DNA > II
That's how I would rank it. :)
-
I > Welcome to my DNA > II
That's how I would rank it. :)
Same.
But like I said, a couple of the songs on II are my favorite Blackfield songs, but as a whole I never felt the album worked as well as the other two.
-
II >= I > DNA
but all three are really good.
-
Revisited the new album a bit, can't get over how fantastic it is.
Oxygen and Far Away especially, though the rest is obviously really great as well.
Must have listened to Oxygen about 20-25 times in the last 3 days. :hefdaddy
-
It was a great song live too :D

Go to hell.
-
Lyric-wise it's bad, music-wise it's really good.
Personally I don't care much for lyrics, so the song is not a problem for me in that sense, though on the contrary, it would never become my favorite BF-song or anything like that. :P
-
It's so much worse once you see it live. I couldn't stop laughing. Just ask Jackie or Nate. They'll vouch for me here.
-
I honestly can't believe that they decided to play it live, seeing as they have so many better songs that weren't played.
-
What made it even funnier is Aviv said that he wrote Go To Hell for his parents.
-
I don't see what's funny. In fact it's quite sad to see someone write a song to say fuck you to his parents.
-

You had to have been there. He made it funny. However, you're right, it is quite sad. But then again, maybe they deserve the song. Only he knows.
-
The reason it comes across as funny to me is because of how childish he made it sound. Like "FUCK YOU MOM AND DAD YOU DON'T KNOW ME NOBODY KNOWS ME SHUT UP I HATE YOU"
-

This was the impression I got as well in concert. Even the other band members were laughing.

Singing along to it was pretty fun at the show.

Haha! Kind of hard to forget the words.

Yes, it was a lot of fun!

I don't get why everyone raves about that song. It's ok, but next to On The Plane it's one of the weaker tracks on the album imo.
-
Oh, totally. Not a fan of that one either...
-
You people are crazy, Oxygen is the best together with Far Away.
-

Actually in an interview, sounds like his parents were into the drug culture and Aviv was the last thing on their minds.

Time to rank the songs on DNA. It's tough for me, considering how highly I rate this album.
1. Go To Hell (I have never understood other people's objections to these lyrics. I think they are brilliant, and I get chills everytime I hear Aviv sing them. I totally connect with the sentiment of this song.)
2. Rising of the Tide
3. Far Away
4. Dissolving With The Night
5. DNA
6. On The Plane
7. Zigota
8. Oxygen
9. Glass House
10. Waving
11. Blood
I must say the arrangements of the songs on this album are just perfect. So is the production. I feel that they really nailed their sound with this album, even if it doesn't as diverse a sound as Blackfield I.
-
1. Far Away
2. Oxygen
3. Waving
4. Zigota
5. DNA
6. Rising of the Tide
7. On the Plane
8. Glass House
9. Go to Hell (Love it musically)
10. Blood
11. Dissolving With the Night
Something like that, I really love the album.. it's truly fantastic. ;)
-
1. Go To Hell (I have never understood other people's objections to these lyrics. I think they are brilliant, and I get chills everytime I hear Aviv sing them. I totally connect with the sentiment of this song.)
Brilliant? Even if you like the sentiment of the song, brilliant? They sound like they were uttered by a pissed off teenager. It's too bad that such good music was wasted in a song with such stupid and childish lyrics.
-
Opinions right? :P
-
Yeah, calling the lyrics to Go To Hell "brilliant" is a bit of a reach, but they never took away from the song for me
I haven't listened to this album in awhile, but...
1. Waving
2. DNA
3. Far Away
4. Zigota
5. Blood
6. Go To Hell
7. Glass House
8. Oxygen (used to be my least favorite, it's grown on me)
9. Rising of the Tide
10. Dissolving with the Night
11. On The Plane
I think I'll actually listen to it today. :)
-
I'm still not sure if I should buy the latest...
-
I'm still not sure if I should buy the latest...
Ofc you should!
-
I can't rank the songs yet because for whatever reason I felt I haven't listened to the album enough.
But I agree Go To Hell IS a great song and so are the lyrics. Yes, they're straightforward and in the face (and for me "I don't care" sounds far more powerful than all the "fuck you"). But it doesn't sound pissed off at all, it's just so... purifying. It just sounds like someone who got through a lot of trouble in his life and a lot of people who tried their best to make it more difficult either of pure bad will or simply ignorance, and then you reach that point when you can show them you succeeded anyway and can give them a middle finger.
Is it refined? No, maybe not. But...
I don't care.

Great post! I think you summed up the essence of the song right there.
-
:)
By the way, because of this thread I suddenly felt like listening to Welcome to My DNA again today. Probably can rank tomorrow.
-
Waving & DNA are the best them!
-
Well, what I know for sure is that my favourite is Zigota. I don't think a song about death can get more beautiful. Especially the chorus.
-
Blood is the best them.
-
It's been a while and I love most of these songs but I'll try...
1. DNA
2. Blood
3. Zigota
4. Waving
5. Glass House
6. Rising of the Tide
7. Far Away
8. Go to Hell
9. Dissolving with the Night
10. On the Plane
11. Oxygen
-
I used to really love Blood, but it became really repetitive for me sadly.
I still like it though, but it would be fairly low on the album.
-
Ok, I'll give it a try anyway (fell asleep earlier than I wanted to yesterday).
1. Zigota
2. Dissolving With The Night
3. Go To Hell
4. Waving
5. Blood
6. DNA
7. Glass House
8. Rising of The Tide
9. Far Away
10. Oxygen
11. On The Plane
1-2 are amazing. 3-7 are really great. 8-10 are nice. On The Plane is the only Blackfield song which is _really_ average for me and does absolutely nothing.
-
I still don't believe that this album is as good as the other two... havent listened to it really since it came out
-
Still not sure if I'll buy this or not...
-
Still not sure if I'll buy this or not...
Why wouldn't you? It's awesome. :)
-
Even if it's their weakest album, it's still worth a purchase / listen.
-
DNA is definitely worth the purchase. Some average tracks, but also some great stuff. And personally I think it is more consistent than BF2, although BF2's high points are much better than anything on DNA.
The strings throughout the album add a lot to the atmosphere though :tup
-
My ranking of their albums:
BF2 > BF1 >>>>>> DNA
-
I'd rank them:
BF1>DNA>BF2
But to sum it up, I love them all a lot.
Hard to choose weak points, because if I listen to Blackfield in the right mood, they are even better then PT for me.
Being a bit sad really adds a lot to listening to BF's music, no matter which of the 3 albums I listen to.
-
My ranking of their albums:
BF2 > BF1 >>>>>> DNA
This is very correct.
-
BF2>>DNA>BF1
-
DNA>>>>BF2>BF1
-
BF1 >= BF2 >> DNA (still good though)
-
I'd rank them:
BF1>DNA>BF2

From Steven Wilson's Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=322669041086698&id=114657261887878)
"Folks, just to clarify news elsewhere of a new Blackfield album coming this year - please note that this time my involvement will be as a contributor rather than a member. I will still be mixing the album, and maybe sing on a couple of Aviv's songs (there will be other guest singers I understand), but with my complete blessing Blackfield is now under his sole curatorship, a process which really began with Welcome to My DNA."
-
I think it sounds interesting.
Blackfield are too good to just put out an album every third year or so, I still want SW to be a part of Blackfield, but I don't think this solution is bad either.

The only concern for me is that DNA was weaker than the first 2 (imo) and that may be down to SW's reduced involvement. I only Steven hasn't had huge input of any of them, but I fear the quality will diminish further.. time will tell.

AGREED. downhill they go. :(

:-\
-
Not excited about this. :-[

I wonder if this is the beginning of a slow process towards SW being exclusively a solo artist...?
-
:( My mom won't take well to this as Blackfield has become one of her favorite bands. I'm not really interested in this project anymore, I guess. While Aviv is a good composer, SW was the main reason I listened to them. All of his songs were my favorite BF tracks. Will still check out the album... hopefully SW will tour with them when the time comes around.

Me too. :-\ I absolutely love his solo work but he seems to be kind of pushing everything else to the side. I hope PT doesn't disband or become inactive.
-
The majority of Blackfield's songs have always been written by Aviv, so the songwriting won't change.
However, Steven's voice and his production abilities may be the difference. But, if he is still mixing and singing a few tracks I think it will still be great.
I have only ever listened to Blackfield for Aviv's songwriting, not for the voice of Steven Wilson or for his arrangements.
-
Blackfields best songs have been Aviv's for me, but I will still miss SW's touch on it.
I wonder if PT is next in line for stepping down now.

Yeah, I hope not :(
-
The next album is going to be a re-interpretation album where Aviv just re-writes and possibly even remixes Go to Hell for 11 straight tracks.

I have a feeling PT is next to go. Which is a shame, because SW is not nearly as good on his own.

:lol
-
I have a feeling PT is next to go.
I don't see it. Considering PT is Wilson's brainchild (plus him being the main songwriter and it being his creative vision), he isn't gonna leave the band, and I doubt the others would go on without him. They might go on hiatus, but even that would surprise me. I think he is just wrapped up in his multiple other projects right now, but once he gets past that, I suspect he will be all ready to get PT going on another album.
-
Anything could happen.
Obviously PT is the main reason why SW got famous/well known in the first place, and made it possible to fund his solo career and do something this spectacular, but in PT he will always have restrictions when writing songs, something he will never have with his solo-stuff.
I'm not saying that PT will break up, but I feel like it's more possible that it would happen now, then lets say 2-3 years ago.

Here's hoping. Not to mention I presume PT is his most profitable project (more members, but PT will pull a much larger gig audience)

Yeah, I feel like it is VERY possible that PT will break up. I really hope not, but I don't remember him sounding too enthusiastic about PT in the last few interviews where it came up. And plus, it's not like this would be the first time a successful musician left a band they helped bring to the top in favor of a solo career. It's clear he really likes doing this solo material. I guess we'll find out in the next year or so, see what happens after he wraps up the Storm Corrosion project/next leg.
I feel that this solo project gives SW more room to let the creative juices flowing, even though he is the main songwriter of PT he has stated numerous times it is still a collaboration and not everyone in PT wants to go the same direction he does (he mentioned one of them doesn't like the jazzier moments). I guess this solo project gives him complete freedom to write whatever he wants, which is awesome.... but I hope he still keeps PT active because they are a completely different flavor and probably my favorite band ever.
-
Which to me makes no sense since he is the driving force in that band. It's not like GFD was that far off from a PT album.
-
Eh, I think it's pretty far off... but anyway, Ian texted this news to me the other day when I was on the road and my initial reaction was basically disappointment but not total hopelessness. I think SW's distance from Welcome to my DNA was sort of a hole in the album, but I still really like the album so I wouldn't expect the next one to be bad.

He didn't contribute much on the first two either...
-
^ he only wrote or co-wrote the vast majority of music and lyrics on Blackfield and has full writing credits for exactly half the songs on BFII (but sang lead vocals on more than those tracks, obviously). didn't contribute much at all!
-
I'll probably go to hell ( ;D) for saying I liked a lot of Geffens songs better.
-
I'll probably go to hell ( ;D) for saying I liked a lot of Geffens songs better.
Nah, I agree completely.
While most people here on the forum considers Steven Wilson 100% of Blackfield, to me it's quite the opposite, and I feel like Aviv is the true core of the band.
While Wilson has helped with some of the lyrics, most songs are Aviv's songs from the beginning, so yeah.

er... no. He wrote 3/10 songs on BFII and 2/10 on BFI. Sure, he wrote more lyrics, but that's hardly the major complaint about DNA.

Bump, because it needs one.
I only have Blackfield II, and it's fucking amazing. I think my favorite is Once.
-

What a phenomenal song. Very possibly my favorite Blackfield track. :tup
-
So many good songs. I don't think I could pick a favorite, but some of the top picks would be Hello, Summer, Lullaby, Scars and This Killer.
-
The bubble bath pic is more than a bit disturbing IMO.
-
So any news on this Blackfield III? Been waiting for some sort of announcement from the FB page but haven't seen anything posted there for months.
-
Blackfield IV actually. Steven has said recently that he's working on the production as well as adding his vocals to a few songs.
-
They were onto mixing a few weeks ago
-

Right. I knew that! ;D
Mixing, eh? Maybe fall release then? Good season for some Blackfield music.

You got a nice combination in that profile pic there. And now that I think about it, in some ways, thematically they evoke something really unique, about the bleakness of Blackfield contrasted with DT's "we'll just keep on going."

My Gift Of Silence :heart

That line gets me every time.

The last update on their Facebook is from October 3 and it says "News on new music soon....!". It was supposed to be released in the spring but there hasn't been much news on it. I hope its going to be out soon because I really want to hear the song that Vincent Cavanagh is singing on.
-
I think it will be released first half of 2013 but I'm not really basing that on anything, just my guess.
-
Tweet from Aviv today:
Tel Aviv was missled tonight and sirens all over the place but I'm fine.. thanks to all my fans.. still in the studio working on BF4
:|
-
According to the band's twitter, new album should be out in April and Steven Wilson is doing the 5.1 mixing. :hat
-
Yay! :)
-
So the new album will be called "Blackfield IV" and a new song called "Pills" is up on Youtube.
Don't know if I'm allowed to post the link though so you'll have to search for it. Sorry.
-
Sounds like the perfect time to finally check out this band.
I guess Welcome to My DNA counts as III. :lol
-
The new song is pretty good!
I'm looking forward to hearing who the guest vocalists will be. We know that SW is still going be singing on a couple of tracks, and it was announced a while ago that Vincent Cavanagh was going to be on a song.
-
New track is great!
-
I wont listen to the new song, want to go into the album and hear everything for the first time. But I just wanna say that I am really excited. I love Blackfield, and I love Aviv (probably a lot more than many others here), and even if SW is not a part of the group anymore, my excitement hasn't decreased. I'm so ready for the new album.
-
WTF Blackfield IV? Why had Welcome To My DNA proper title then? I don't like the title at all unless they will rename Welcome To My DNA to Blackfield III :lol I know that it isn't very important but I like to have everything organized and Blackfield album titles have become a real mess right now.
-

SO....where is Blackfield IV?! Rumors pointed to an April release, then later on to May 21st, and now that's come and gone, has anyone heard anything further on the eventual release of this album?! It seems to have gone unnoticed by many.

-
Delayed to November cos the sound was all wrong.

As far as I know it was pushed back to later this year. I don't really mind, as long as I enjoy the final result.

I saw a while ago in one of those Kscope-"what we have out now/upcoming releases"-things that comes with the CDs, but cool to see it as a big picture. I really like the cover, reminds me of one of the Bass Communion covers.

Cool cover!
Got this from the Burning Shed email newsletter:
Israel's leading counter-culture rock musician Aviv Geffen returns with Blackfield IV, featuring Steven Wilson and other special collaborators.
The new album includes guest vocal performancess from Brett Anderson (Suede), Jonathan Donahue (Mercury Rev) and Vincent Cavanagh (Anathema).
Since Welcome To My DNA, Geffen's profile has continued to rise and Aviv has worked with legendary producers Tony Visconti and Trevor Horn, played live with U2 and Placebo, and has been a judge on the Israeli TV show,The Voice.
Aviv contributed the writing and vocals on Blackfield IV, with Steven Wilson - who also mixed the album - adding guitar and vocal parts.
This vinyl edition is pressed on heavyweight (180g) vinyl and is packaged in a gatefold sleeve.
All copies ordered from the Kscope store contain code for the download digital version of the album.
Pre-order now for 26th August release date.
The way this email is worded implies that SW played all the guitars and contributed vocals. If that's the case then his level of involvement won't be much different than it was on DNA.

I deserved that. I didn't even look up what albums there are D: . Thanks though, I'll check em out!

Saw this in my fb feed from Aviv! I'm looking forward to this album as much as DTs new upcoming album. Can't wait for August! What a pleasant surprise to see some Mercury Rev involvement.
-
Sad I'm just now getting around to hearing there is a new song. Anyway, I love Blackfield. Welcome to My DNA is a masterpiece, I think. It's underrated!
-
I wouldn't call DNA a masterpiece but it's a really solid album.
-
As much as I enjoy it, no album with Go to Hell could be a masterpiece.
-
Well when I first heard "Go to Hell", I didn't like it at all. I don't know though, after time, it just kinda started to be good. It's still my least favorite from the album, but I actually like it now. Weird.
-
Musically, Go to Hell is really good. Lyrically.. eh. I don't hate it like some people though, it's a good song that could have been even better with other lyrics.
-
When I saw Blackfield, Aviv explained that the lyrics of Go To Hell were his way of venting about his parents, who were largely absent from his life. He said he didn't want to be that kind of parent to his son (or something along those lines), so I guess the song is supposed to be a "fuck you" to all the parents who largely ignore their kids. I do think he could have expressed the same sentiment and emotions with better lyrics but I still enjoy the song.

He did this at my show (NYC), and it took a song that I already struggled with and made it laughable. I mean musically I love it, and the actual vocal melodies are great, but it is impossible to get over how horrible the lyrics are after hearing that story.

That was the show I went to. I though he sounded like a whiny 13 year old, but I wasn't sure if that was the point (i.e. the song was from that point of view). Either way, the lyrics do suck. :lol
-
I get the sentiment behind the song, but it's pretty sad that those were the best lyrics he could come up with to express it. It ruins what is musically a good song.
-
Blackfield I ... is kind of a very depressing album...
-

New song from IV I think. I haven't followed this very closely.
-
Sounds good!
-
Sounds like Blackfield. I like.
-
I have to say, I wasn't overly wild about that song. The verses were nice and moody, very Blackfield-like, but the chorus was so wordy, it came off as more clunky than anything. Hopefully, it will grow on me.

Good song! I was kind of surprised to be honest.
Someone in the Youtube comments said that Aviv confirmed in an interview that they're touring with Steven Wilson next year. I can't find the interview, so I'm going to take it with a grain of salt, but it would be great if this was true.
-
:-\
agreed, that new video is awful imo. twice as soupy, half as honest.
-
New songs are nice. And I love the vid for Jupiter, as I LOVE sand art and that person was great at it!
-
I miss Porcupine Tree.
-
How is that related to Blackfield, seeing as SW isn't even a member anymore? :P
-
I love Jupiter !
-
Great track and video!
-
I REALLY like the new song and vid.
-
Not so sure about this one. Didn't really care that much for the DNA-one either. Mainly because I can't stand Aviv's vocals. :-\

After clicking on the samples link above, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed by how short Blackfield IV is. 31 minutes. Especially as it's a full-price album. We'll be getting over twice this much music with DT12, for near enough the same price. The songs are beautiful, don't get me wrong, but the fact they're so short is one of the most frustrating things.
-
Er, there are never going to be long Blackfield songs. That's kind of the point. And I'm willing to bet I will enjoy it more than the new DT (if I even buy that), regardless of length.
-
The new album is up on Spotify now if anyone wants to listen.
-
I don't see it :(
-
it's really good.
-
Yeah, I really enjoyed my first listen. Will see how it sounds tomorrow.
-
Yeah, I can't find it.
-
Something about Aviv's vocals are just so relaxing. I absolutely love XRay (Vincent has got to be one of the best vocalists ever). I'm really digging Lost Souls too. Blackfield just has some beautiful music. It's simple...but beautifully crafted :)
-
Let us be real, without Wilson, Blackfield is going to suck. We're all thinking it, even those that have been hopeful about Aviv.
-
I'm not thinking it?
-
You are. You are...
-
No. >:(
-
Let us be real, without Wilson, Blackfield is going to suck. We're all thinking it, even those that have been hopeful about Aviv.
Aviv was always the best part of Blackfield and this comment is just nonsense. The new Blackfield is great.
-
I'll have to check out the new album sometime. I'm not a big fan of BF but every album has at least one or two really good tracks. Waving is a godly song.
-
Got the new album from iTunes last night. After one listen, I'm pretty impressed. I wasn't expecting it to suck, but I wasn't expecting something this good. My favorites upon first listen are X-Ray and Sense of Insanity but the whole album is incredibly solid. It probably won't end up being better than I or II for me, but I may end up enjoying it more than DNA (which I also love).
-
Jupiter is so fucking good. Probably my favorite on the album.
-

Welcome to my shit list. :tup
-
Wilson only wrote one song on the last album if I remember correctly, and although it's one of the best ones IMO, a Blackfield album lacking Wilson's influence is old news.
Guys, I went into the store today to buy this and "Jupiter" was playing! It's growing on me, and I'm on my first listen of the whole album right now.
I'm a bit disappointed to find no download code that came with my vinyl.
-
Lost Souls
Sense of Insanity
Jupiter
X-Ray
Springtime
Pills
After the Rain
The Only Fool is Me (would be higher if Aviv did vocals)
Faking
Firefly
Kissed by the Devil
I still like Welcome to My DNA better, but this album is "Pretty darn good", as Zantera says ;)

Waving is excellent but there are a few better songs on Welcome to my DNA. It's probably top3 on the album though.
-
I found the interview where Aviv confirms that Steven Wilson is touring with Blackfield in the US and Europe in February. Kind of surprised that he's doing the tour as I'm pretty sure he said that he wouldn't be involved with Blackfield live. Still, I hope I'll be able to catch them.

I wasn't expecting a particularly long album, but then, I wasn't expecting it to be under 35 minutes either. Was hoping for somewhere between 35-45 mins. I'm going to wait until I can afford to buy it along with another album, so that won't be the only thing I have to listen to when I get home. It will be enjoyable, I'm pretty certain of that, but it will be over far too quickly for my liking.
Blackfield produce the most beautiful, complex chord progressions, and it's a bit of a shame they're not developed at length.
-
I'm not sure what you mean by "developed at length." One of the things I love so much about Blackfield is how concise their songs are. They don't need to be long or complicated to be beautiful and emotional.
-

agreed with all of this, but i must say i'm quite interested in what would happen if BF went for a long track. it won't happen either way — the closest we have is the extended "Blackfield," and that's only really lengthened by repetition.
-
Never been huge on Blackfield, so I am totally surprised how much I love the new record. Aviv really has stepped into his own vision here. Being out of SW shadow seems to have been a good thing for him creatively. I couldn't imagine this music being made with SW still a full-timer.
-
In case y'all haven't seen this on FB/Twitter yet, first two shows of the tour announced- London and Paris in February :D
-
Blackfield IV has some great stuff: X-Ray, Sense of Insanity, Jupiter, Lost Souls..
but I love DNA a lot more.
-
I held off on getting Blackfield tickets thinking it'd just be Geffen, now I know it's Wilson too I'm very tempted... but that interview implies Wilson will be there, a prior interview with Wilson he stated he wouldn't be getting involved so I'm not sure what to think. None of the gig pages say either.
-
Got my tickets, London February 5th here I (and others) come! I haven't really fallen for the new album yet so I'll be giving that some listening beforehand so I can appreciate the gig.
I wonder what changed from Wilson stating he would not be involved with Blackfield touring etc. to now doing all of the European dates?
-
That's pretty awesome!
-
Lost Souls might be my favorite Blackfield song. It's so good!
-
I love it as well. It's SO good.
-
Aviv's vocals are perfect on there!
-
I never really gave IV much of a chance - the lack of Steven Wilson admittedly made me a bit apprehensive about it - but listening to it now, there's definitely some good stuff on there. It has some clunkers, which the first three don't really have (except for Go to Hell, thanks to the lyrics), but there are some good songs here. The vibe of this band is so good. :coolio
-
Based on the album cover, I'm guessing Blackfield V's going to be a bit more... intense? >_>

I saw that cover earlier today and was pretty impressed. It is certainly something else. I'm expecting a September or October release date, unless one was already announced and I somehow missed it...

Really excited for this!
-
I'm not hyped since the last two albums were very disappointing, but will certainly check this one out.
-
I don't think they were disappointing. Sure, the first is their best, but Aviv Geffen was always the best part about the band and he has continued to write good songs without SW's involvement. And it seems like SW will be involved in some capacity, so it will definitely have that Blackfield-feel to it. Much more excited about this than I would be for SW5 tbh.
-
I'm not hyped since the last two albums were very disappointing, but will certainly check this one out.
I think the 3rd album was mostly good, albeit not nearly as good as the first two, but the fourth was definitely a major disappointment, which, not coincidentally, was the one with the least involvement by SW. I have high hopes that they will bounce back with this one.
-
I also thought it descended sharply once SW stepped back. The best songs on the last two are the ones re-recorded from Geffen's past records and the one(s) written by SW, imo.
I would say the first two and the NYC DVD were the peak of this project. Hopefully this new one will prove me wrong!
-
There's absolutely no denying that the last two albums have suffered as a result of SW's stepping back, and that his involvement lifted the first albums up a couple of levels.
-
There's absolutely no denying that the last two albums have suffered as a result of SW's stepping back, and that his involvement lifted the first albums up a couple of levels.
I think that's the wrong way to look at it. That's like saying the last two DT albums are terrible because MP are no longer the drummer. Sometimes it's because of more things than just members leaving or joining, in this case I think Aviv needs to find his feet as the main anchor of the band, and IV was the first album with SW not as a main member anymore, and there's always gonna be some transition time needed.
-

Agreed.

But the big difference here is that DT are a band of 5 and Blackfield are (were) a duo. A change in a band of five has impact, but not as much as a band with fewer members, certainly a duo. It's effectively Aviv operating under a pseudonym, like Roland Orzabal did with Tears for Fears in the 90s.
-
I just think it's interesting because on BF2 SW only wrote music on 3 out of 10 songs, and on the debut, which is their best album, he only wrote music for 2 of the 10 songs. Lyrically you could argue that SW wrote more on the first two, and you would get a point, because he was more involved lyrically, maybe 80% on the debut and about 50% on BF2. But I think his role in the band is somewhat overstated because even though he put his touch on it, I feel like people want to credit him more than he actually contributed. I would also counter the lyric credit argument slightly with the fact that nobody, at least here really talks about Blackfield because of their lyrics, unless it's something like Go to Hell, which is obviously bad in that regard. I feel like most of us like Blackfield because of the great melodies and while lyrics play a part in that, I think the music does to a greater extent.
SW writing music for 2 songs on the debut while "only" writing for 1 on Welcome to my DNA is not that big of a difference. It's like people want to lump WtmDNA off on Aviv when in reality SW was still a member of Blackfield and still put his 100% into that album. He may only have contributed to 1 song musically, but that's compared to 3 and 2 before that. I can buy the argument for IV because SW had stepped out, he only provided vocals and other than that he had nothing to do with it. But even on the earlier albums, most of the best songs are Aviv's.
-
I think it's more of a case of most of us knowing what a great songwriter is Wilson is on his own or without Geffen; meanwhile, the jury is still out on Geffen in that regard. Wilson might have technically written the music for only five songs from the first two albums, but his blueprint is all over most over them, it likely being a case of Geffen bringing the "finished" songs into the studio and then the two working out the kinks and odds and ends of the final recorded product together. Fast forward to album 4 where it was Geffen on his own basically, with virtually no help from SW with his "finished" work, and the end result was pretty mediocre.
i think just about everyone would agree that for the purposes of this project, it is better served by having them both there.
-
SW definitely puts his print on things he produces! I believe they co-produced 1 & 3 and SW did 2 by himself, Aviv 4 by himself. I didn't mind IV that much, still my least favorite, but a good album. But I definitely missed SW's producing hands on that one. Not that Aviv did a bad job, but those first 3 BF albums definitely has a connection in terms of feel/sound, and IV sounds different. I do miss him when it comes to that, he did a fine job.
-
That cover is :hat
-
It would appear from the recent FB posts that the album cover for Blackfield V has changed to something a bit more... nostalgic. I'm probably going to use the burning car cover for my files anyway, though.

Really excited for this. I like Blackfield as much as PT so a new album is exciting.

Very much looking forward to this. Hoping for quality similar to the first two again. :hat :coolio

From SW's Facebook page...
Blackfield V will be released on 18th November by Kscope, and sees a return to the full partnership that made the first two albums such firm favourites with fans. Written and recorded over a period of 18 months in both Israel and England, Blackfield V contains 13 linked songs that form a flowing 45 minute ocean themed song cycle. With Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen expertly handling vocals, guitars, and keyboards, Tomer Z from the Blackfield band on drums, and string arrangements performed by the London Session Orchestra, the album is a powerful journey through catchy melodies, lush arrangements, and stunning production. Legendary producer / engineer Alan Parsons produced three of the album’s key tracks.
Both musicians consider Blackfield V to be their best collaboration to date. The album will be released by Kscope as a Digipack CD with a 16 page booklet, CD/Blu Ray with high resolution audio, and double vinyl.
Now I'm looking forward to it even more.
-
Noice. First two albums are great. I'm looking forward to it :)
-
Surprised that SW is back, didn't he say that he wants to concentrate on his solo career?
Anyway, nice that he's back and this gets me excited even more.

Amazingly, that statement was about 5 years ago. He's done 3 solo albums in that time (GFD, TRTRTS and HCE) and carved a name for himself as a solo artist (rather than as a member of PT).
Anyway, I'm excited to hear that it's a full collaboration again. And the album cover makes sense now we know it's an ocean-themed song cycle.

I was wondering why a 44 minute album was pressed on two records.

"Unfortunately the release of the new Blackfield album has been delayed, and Kscope have rescheduled it for 20th January. We apologise profusely for this, but it is due to circumstances beyond our control. Frustrating though it is, hopefully when you hear the album you will agree it was worth the wait! In the meantime we hope to bring you more audio and video preview material from the finished album soon."

It's almost stupid how good that sounds. On a YouTube clip. It blows the Raven production completely out of the water (not a slight to Raven, though I don't think it's SW's best mix, tbh). I won't preorder until I hear a full song or two, but I'm excited to get back to what made BFI&II great in the first place.
-

Eh I think it sounds fantastic - Parsons produced it too. Really like that analog sound and feel :P

Parsons is why I brought it up. The dry drums don't do it any favours. Blackfield V previews, on the other hand, have a full and polished-without-samples sound that makes Marco's recordings sound like a demo. It's nearly preposterous how much worse Marco's kit sounds in comparison.
-
Hang on hang on woah woah woah woah...10th FEBRUARY now?! It's never a good sign when they keep pushing back release dates. Things are obviously very very wrong with all of this behind the scenes.

new interview with Aviv Geffen.
some clips and a lot of details about Blackfield V, comparing it to the 1st album. "October" may end of being 1 of SW top 5 songs ever, etc.

Again, those videos are not available. But I did listen on Spotify. They're alright, Family Man certainly has room for growth. But they're not absolutely mindblowing.

really?..maybe they are Country restricted? but you're the only person I've seen say they are unavailable.

They're not available for me either (Spain)

Will have to watch it at work

Wow, really enjoying these new tracks from Blackfield. First time I'm digging them again since the days of Blackfield II. Great production from Alan Parsons and just a convincing return to the melancholy of the first album.
-
I'd say it's their best since the debut
-
Even better than Blackfield II? :o
Damn gotta listen to this one soon then.
-
Even better than Blackfield II? :o
Damn gotta listen to this one soon then.
For me it would be:
I
V
II
WtmDNA
IV
I still enjoy the bottom ones more than most people seem to, but I think it's because Blackfield has always been so close to my heart. While I think Aviv has always been the hero of the band, I also feel like him and SW work very well together and bring out the best in each other. :)
-
I've really gotten into Family Man now. I can't even pinpoint the exact moment it happened, but I love the song now, having been just meh about it when I first heard it. I definitely plan to get the album as soon as I can.
-
Family Man is a great track. I still need to listen to Blackfield 4.
-
Went and purchased my copy of Blackfield V, released today. I haven't listened to all of it yet, but I love what I've heard so far. Some instant grabbers (Family Man, How Was Your Ride?, Lately) and others with plenty of room to grow on me. It's great to have Blackfield back as a proper duo. That's how they work best.
-
Bought it from iTunes last night, but didn't have a chance all day to get to it till now. Hoping it's a return to the wonderfulness of the first two albums...
-
October might just be my favourite Aviv-led Blackfield song. It's gorgeous and heartfelt.
October Aviv-led?
not sure, but Steven seems to have had quite a lot to do with that track (the standout on the record to me)
https://youtu.be/evLMTMuAmhQ?t=450
-
Dammit, they can sound similar sometimes!
-
As far as I know the song was written by Aviv and is a personal song about his life (so a bit weird that SW sung it) similar to how From 44 to 48 was a personal song written by SW about his life.
-
So far, this sounds quite nice. A definite upgrade over the last two albums (the 3rd was good, the 4th was mostly trash).
-
I personally really liked Welcome to My DNA a lot. II is still the best, I think. I've given V a listen and it seems to be definitely better than IV. IV had some great stuff but a lot of meh stuff.
I do wonder though, why is it,
Blackfield I
Blackfield II
Welcome to My DNA
Blackfield IV
Blackfield V
the lack of consistency :(
-
I haven't listened to IV and V but Welcome to my DNA had my favorite blackfiled song, "Waving"
Each of the first three albums had some tremendous tracks on there with the rest being meh.
-

DNA has three letters... Blackfield III... Steven Wilson helped create a song called Half Light..
Half Life III confirmed.
-
Could be an interesting idea...like people have done with self-titled albums in the past, give each Blackfield album a nickname based on something on the cover, like The Beatles' White Album, Peter Gabriel's first four self-titled albums, Metallica's "Black Album" and so forth. Go!
-
So yeah, this new album is really, really, really good. :tup :tup
-
Dammit, they can sound similar sometimes!
hey, I have to retract my last post slightly, as it seems you were spot-on about October per it was originally a song Aviv recorded.

Yes, it's surprisingly good..especially coming off those last two albums were they just felt very uninspiring to say the least (at least on the listening side).

But it's definitely SW singing it on Blackfield V though, and I did think on the first listen or two (prior to actually looking in the booklet) that it was Aviv singing. Basically I need to think before speaking.
-
So who sings Lonely Soul?
-
Not sure who the female singer is on that one, but that is one of the two songs I think are somewhat average, The Jackal being the other. Early favorites are Lately (that chorus!), October and Salt Water.
Also, as is normal when I get a new album from a band I'm a big fan of, I have revisisted all of their other stuff this week, and the third album is a lot better than I remember. Not quite as great as the first two, but still damn good (minus Go to Hell, which is the dumbest song ever). The fourth album is still mostly forgettable.
-
Really not sure why IV gets so much hate. I and II are the clear best, but III and IV are about the same for me. And V is right up there with those two. Not great, but pleasant, probably a nice album to throw on Sunday morning when you're just piddling about not really doing much.
-
The fourth isn't a bad album; it's just kind of there.
-
Not sure who the female singer is on that one
According to the credits, an Israeli singer by the name of Alex Moshe. I kind of assumed it was Ninet Tayeb at first as she'd been working with SW recently.
Lonely Soul isn't really my favourite. A nice tune, but aside from the chorus, it's just repeats of "I'm a lonely soul". I was expecting a bit more from it.
Early favorites are Lately (that chorus!), October and Salt Water.
Totally agree with Lately (my favourite). October is beautiful. Salt Water is lovely too, though I feel like I've heard that guitar melody sung before. It sounds like it could be a Porcupine Tree vocal melody or something.
-
Agreed, regarding Lonely Soul. I like that recurring main line, but like you said, the song never really goes anywhere.
Undercover Heart has snuck up on me as well as one of the better tunes.
-
The fourth isn't a bad album; it's just kind of there.
Yeah, it's incredibly bland IMO.
V is a decent return to form, nice album.
-
I just saw that Aviv Geffen was doing a tour through Europe playing Blackfield's material. Has anyone ever seen him live without Steven Wilson? Is it a good show?

Nice cover art!
-
I guess every third album won't be numbered? :lol
Edit - So I listened to/watched the single on YouTube a couple of times. It's not bad, seems very in-line with how the band has progressed over the last couple of albums. As far as SW's involvement goes this time, I read on Burning Shed that he provides guitars, as well as lead vocals on 3 of the songs, but I'm not sure how much (co-)writing he handled on this one (as I am sure he was busy putting together TFB).
I'll pre-order it eventually, if not today then sometime soon. There doesn't seem to be any particular initial-run exclusives anywhere like the last couple of albums (IV and V had mediabooks, and the V mediabook was extra-large and VERY nicely put together and designed). Seems like the only variations outside of the CD digipak are the various colored vinyls, and since I don't collect vinyl, I guess I'll be sticking with the digipak!
-Marc.
-
Nice cover art!
Indeed
-
I haven't followed Blackfield in a while since their 2nd album, I may have heard a few songs of DNA, haven't heard anything since. Might revist them soon.
-
New song sounds like Coldplay
-
Am I the only Blackfield fan who only likes BF songs that SW sings or is the primary singer?
-
Am I the only Blackfield fan who only likes BF songs that SW sings or is the primary singer?
Nope. I enjoy Aviv but he's very hit or miss for me. SW's stuff is usually my favorite.
-
Am I the only Blackfield fan who only likes BF songs that SW sings or is the primary singer?
Depends on the song. For me Aviv has always been the highlight of Blackfield and usually some of his songs are the best but SW has a few good ones too.
-
Regarding SW vs AG, I like both, but I think at this point, it comes down to the music, and not who is just singing it. By this point in the band's lifetime, I will expect the amount of Aviv vocal moments to measure 4-to-1 with Steven's vocal moments on any given album, especially given how back-and-forth Steven's involvement has been since the 3rd album.
At any rate, I did pre-order the album from Burning Shed, so I am pretty anxious to hear how the rest of the album sounds. Given their history, I don't expect every song to sound like the new single, and would be pretty disappointed if it became a bunch of Coldplay-knock-offs. One or two is fine, but I hope there a lot of that trademark Blackfield variety across the whole album.

The people complaining about pop music on the SW thread probably won’t like this! I think it’s pretty good though, prefer it to the last one.
-
I avoid that thread like covid now. Those toxic people are ruining my favourite artist.
I am confused by release dates though for Blackfield. Some saying November 6th, others December 4th.
The promo says it's "ambitious". I have very specific ideas of what that word means, so we'll have to wait and see if the album delivers on that.
-
Hmmm, I guess no one cares that the 6th album came out? :lol
Or maybe everyone else had the same ho-hum reaction to it that I did. It's not bad, but just seems kind of there. And whoever mastered it should be punched as it sounds too loud and muddy. Ah well, I still have the first three albums and the fifth to keep me happy when I am in the mood for Blackfield. :coolio

It's....not awful. Like you, I still really enjoy their first few albums and V (which blew me out of the water), so I sort of had some high expectations of this one, but it seems like it was a bit of a let down for me, but like I said, it's not awful. Now, albums can be as long or as short as they like, but after all this time since V, Aviv didn't have a few more songs in him before putting out a new album? At just over half an hour, this must be the shortest new studio album I've gotten this year, four minutes shorter than the first McStine & Minnemann album (which I felt was a bit short, but they cranked out a second album just before the end of the year, so I can't be too upset at how short their debut was).
Also, if anyone else is familiar with The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, does anyone else hear the title track's piano motif inside "For The Music"? It's a sort of repeating pattern of two chords/notes that sounds AWFULLY similar to a part in the opening theme to BOTW. Is it just me? :lol

I was going to resurrect the thread a few days ago to complain about the CD being $23 on Amazon, but I figured it wasn't worth doing.
-
Well, so much for "ambitious"...I'd argue Blackfield V has more ambition in its opening intro track than this album has in its entirety. And FINALLY people joining me on the "too short albums" crusade!

I think it's good but it's my least favorite out of the Blackfield albums (I'd say IV just beats it out). For me there's really no bad tracks on it but the strongest tracks aren't as strong as those on previous albums (or as frequent).

As Blackfield, the duo of Aviv Geffen and Steven Wilson has worked together intermittently across 22 years, going back to 2000. The entirety of the project's output through to 2017 is captured on An Accident of Stars: 2004-2017.
Presented in a deluxe book-set with a 64-page book at its core (which details the beginnings and inner workings of Blackfield's journey through interviews with both Steven and Aviv), An Accident of Stars includes the first five albums as well as a bonus disc of the band's previously unreleased incredible show at Paradiso, Amsterdam from 2011 (Live DNA).
In addition, a blu-ray contains Blackfield, Blackfield II and Welcome To My DNA in 24bit 44.1kHz format, Blackfield IV and Blackfield V in 5.1 Surround Sound and High Resolution 24-bit Stereo, as well as the full Live In N.Y. show as a visual concert with 5.1 Surround Sound and High Resolution 24-bit Stereo. The bands’ promo videos from this period are also included.
Limited edition, one time pressing.

Geffen and Wilson look back at their Kscope years as a period of significant discovery, evolution, and accomplishment. "Blackfield delivered a brilliant set of songs with a really distinctive sound across these five albums,” says Wilson. “Sometimes you really don’t understand what your sound is until years later. When I revisited these albums during the compiling process, I realised how unique the combination of Aviv and I sound. It’s something that could only have emerged from the two of us, together. And there are so many great songs on these records. Aviv was so often coming up with songs that blew me away. It’s a really special collaboration that’s delivered tremendous classic pop songs, production, and performances.”
For just over $90 USD at Burning Shed, I'm probably going to pass as I have all of their studio albums already, as tempting as this set is just for that BD and the unreleased live show.

Interesting that, like the rest of us, they've chosen to pretend that For the Music doesn't exist.

It could be that this box set has been in the making for awhile, perhaps even before FTM was made/released, so that might be why it's not included. It's also their most recent album and is probably still readily available, so it would be redundant to include it.

I genuinely did not know there was an album after V that has been out for three years already.
It is not very good?

IMO, it was a step-down from IV and V. It's my opinion that only the numbered albums are good, with I & II being the better of them, though IV and V are pretty good as well. I rarely ever go back to WTMDNA or FTM, which I found mostly forgettable, mostly because Steven Wilson's presence is slightly diminished (again).

Blackfield are very very hit and miss. And that has a direct correlation with how involved SW is in them.
I, II, V - Masterpieces
DNA, IV, FTM - Miserable save one or two tracks. Also they're short as hell. 31 minutes is not an album.

Yeah, it's weird. Even though Geffen has always been the main writer, the albums without Wilson see a severe drop in quality.

Very true, his singing can be really hard to get through at times.
