The only song I've heard from SYL is Aftermath and I pretty much cum every time I hear it. Would I perhaps be better suited to SYL than DTP?

But I am more inclined to the orchestral side of Townsend at the moment...something brutal with melodies. I don't imagine SYL has much of that... Although I will certainly delve more into that project soon.

ED:
Ahh, okay... I dunno why but I thought he had three or four other projects already out after Decon. Hm. Oh well.

Um...whoa. I'm watching the music video for Juular. Holy fucking shit. How have I not seen this shit? This is EXACTLY what I wanted. Decon it is. I'm downloading Epicloud now but I'll save it for later...this is crazy cool.

Also, what's going on with Casualties? I remember seeing somewhere that he was done with it. Should we expect a release this year?
IIRC, it'll be coming out later this year or early next year. Z2 probably late next year if not later.
Cool. Very excited about that, Z2 should be cool as well.

And yea, Epicloud is worth listening to, even if it isn't as brutal as Decon. If you like Deconstruction and haven't checked out SYL, you definitely want to fix that.

I'm actually more excited for Casualties than Z2. I actually don't enjoy Ziltoid as much as most people. I still like couple songs from the album, but the album feels incomplete to me.

Yep same here. Though last time I listened to Ziltoid I liked it quite a bit more than before. Casualties sounds like something up my alley, and it has the singer from Ki, who was really good.

Ziltoid seems to...'slapstick' for me. I've only heard Hyperdrive because of Addicted! and I still like the latter version better. But I imagine I wouldn't enjoy it much at all. In fact, it might be the only Devy release that I actively dislike. Either way, I'm still interested in seeing how Z2 turns out if only for the possibilities. If it's more of the same, that's fine and I'll pass, but if it's something different, a different light and ambiance, then I'd be intrigued by what music that would bring. I'm not holding out for anything different though; it is called "Z2" for a reason.

I just finished up Decon, and at the same time, I finished myself. It was incredible. Taking a break, thinking about going to see Man of Steel again.... Hrrrmmm. Alien is almost done downloading...

I love Color Your World and The Greys. But the others I'll enjoy occasionally. Its alright but not his best. I think its the programmed drums I don't like.

Yea those drums really kill it for me. I remember that being my first thought on the album when only a few seconds in; "These drums are no good".

Since you liked Decon so much, you should give The New Black a shot.

Alien and City are the usual recommendations when people ask about Strapping Young Lad albums, but I really like The New Black. It's not as punishingly heavy as Alien or City, but it has more of a sense of humor than those two, which makes it easier to take (IMO of course) and also makes it a bit more similar to Decon.

I actually don't recommend Alien to those unfamiliar with SYL because it's just so incredibly abrasive that it kind of loses the emotion and almost borders on self-parody. City is much more emotional and melodic, and The New Black is pretty light while still maintaining the SYL sound and sense of humor.

So, basically, the order SYL should be checked out is

The New Black
City
Alien
Chickenfeather
Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Ziltoid was the album that got me into Devy and has a special place in my heart for it. I think it is one of his better albums. Comedy or not, the songs are awesome. Epicloud is my favorite thing he's done though. So much awesomeness. I'd probably put Ziltoid at 3rd or 4th.

Fuck that, Alien was my first SYL album and the second album I heard from the mind of Devy.

I heard Alien first from SYL and it almost caused me to write-off the whole project as just mindless aggression (and the lyrics of Shitstorm really bothered me because I thought they were too silly). I know, I was naive and uninitiated. The New Black caused me to take more notice, and City blew my fucking mind.

I guess all I'm really saying is, if Alien doesn't do it for you, don't give up.

Well, it's supposed to be silly. I mean, it's about a fourth-dimensional alien's search for the perfect cup of coffee.

On a different note, anybody heard anything about Casualties?
