I was super impressed with Stormcrow.  Both albums are great.

Nemesis is the best them regarding Stratovarius albums.

I listened to that again the other day and I still can't really click with it.  It's solid and all but not one of my favs.  I think Eternal was much better.

That's how I feel about Eternal. :lol Everything just blurs together for me with that one and it sounds less original than Nemesis did to me.

Jani L has got a surprisingly good voice too, his demo's on the Japan Tour Edition are excellent.

Both Nemesis and Eternal seem to be cut from the same cloth, but Nemesis to my ears will always come out on top.
Not sure why, but Eternal never hit the same sweet spot as Nemesis did.

Matter of tastes I guess boys.  Shows the strength of both albums I suppose.  I'd prefer Elysium over both though actually.  :lol

Dreamspace is the only Stratovarius album that's ever done anything for me.

I have a bit of a soft spot for the self titled.  I think it got a really bad wrap.

I enjoyed it, as well. As a matter of fact, I think the lead off track is the only one that doesn't really do anything for me.

I bloody hate the album, it's the only Stratovarius CD that I do not own, not even to fill the gap in the collection.
For me it was Tolkki at his lowest whilst in the band.

So I have Elysium and it's not bad. Need to warm up to it more. So far it seems like pretty standard of what's being done in the power metal scene right now. I'd like to check ot some of their more classic albums (not interested in the ones with Tolkki singing).

Is Firewind metal? I've listened to a bit of them, what I've heard is impressive. But I've heard in more than one place that they don't consider themselves power metal. So I looked up some interviews and it's true, they don't consider themselves a PM band. But they play totally in a power metal style and have many songs with fantasy lyrics. What's up with that??

They are metal and yeah, I'd probably call them sort of in the power metal vein.  Not a lot of emphasis on keys.  Most of their albums are really, really loud.  (brickwalled) But they do have some pretty good albums.  I like all of their albums but I think "The Premonition" is my favorite.

I've been listening to this band called Soto lately.  They've got two albums, their latest is called "Divak" and they have another called "Inside The Vertigo"

A little hard to describe and not really power metal in the traditional sense.  "Divak" is actually a pretty progressive album, but at times they remind me of mid and late-era Savatage.  Killer vocalist.

It's Jeff Scott Soto, from Malmsteen's first two albums and Talisman fame, plus his own solo material, he's a legend.  The first album is really good, I haven't picked up the second one yet but it's on my list.

Nice man, I'll move it up on the priority list then.

It seems the general opinion is that the fans aren't digging this new band and direction as much as his AOR solo melodic rock stuff.  I find it quite fresh.

Yeah, me too.  It's pretty modern sounding, but it's still got some of those more classic sounding organs and synths here and there.  And the vocals.  Damn.   :eek

I probably have more discs in my collection featuring JSS than any other singer - but yeah..............his more modern songs for the most part (and his black painted nails  :lol ) aren't doing it for me.

Damage Control is still such an amazing melodic rock record.  I like the Soto thing, but wished he did continue on with what he was doing on that album.

I've been listening to their album Few Against Many for the last couple days. I really enjoy it. It's got  real classic/traditional metal sound to it. None of that symphonic stuff I'm not very fond of. I don't know, it doesn't sound like straight forward power metal. I think maybe their earlier stuff was in much more of a classic power metal style, because Few Against Many is more traditional metal like Priest, Accept, Maiden etc.

I'd heard the name mentioned a few times here and there.  I guess I just never took an interest in any of the music he's been involved with before.  Never cared much for Malmsteen -he's great, no doubt, but it's just not my thing.

Don't think I've heard a single note from that other band you mentioned either.

Listened to the samples of Damage Control on Amazon.com

Sounds pretty...mellow.  Not what I expected.  That's not necessarily a bad thing.  Some of the songs sounded pretty catchy and the MP3 album is only $7.99 so I'll probably just grab it.

Check some old school Talisman also mate.  Not that heavy but awesome material.  The Soto stuff I think would probably be the heaviest stuff he's done.  Brent could probably clarify that.

I'm not a fan of symphonic power metal. Stratovarius is okay though.

From what I've heard, Hammerfall just sounds like traditional heavy metal that's sped up faster. What are some other good non-symphonic power metal bands?
